Baby if you thought that I was trouble then you’re gonna hate what’s coming next
Tumblr media
Rhaena stepped out of the wheelhouse, one ivory and rose toned boot resting on its step as she kissed Prince Aemond on the cheek goodbye, and then turned to greet the boy she'd come to accompany with a bright smile, declaring, "Lovely to see you, Lord Davos!" as the carriage disappeared down the road. She bid the Kingsguard assigned to accompany her into the city that day to follow far enough back that the pair could converse privately, and then looped her arm through Davos', before starting off towards the building a few paces ahead they were here to survey.
This was her third time meeting the Lord of Godsgrace, though the first had been little more than a passing introduction. Most she knew were wary of Davos, put on edge by the abundant array of whispers that followed him, but Rhaena traded in rumors, it was bad for business to trust them—and contrary to what such talk would suggest—Rhaena quite liked the boy beside her. After exchanging greetings Davos remarked on her betrothed,
"You could do better than him, you know."
“And you could do better than that ratty bowl cut but I don’t judge your preferences.” Taking his amusement at her retort as encouragement, she explained as they walked into the space properly, "This was originally built as a bathhouse, you know, the spring water that runs under here to the Red Keep's supply isn't any good to drink, but it's better than most for, well, just about everything else. It was forced to close during the Concilliator's reign, though, and it's been a dozen things since. After the attack on Queen Alysanne in Maidenpool women didn't feel safe attending public baths." Her conclusion went unspoken because it was overt, once women stopped coming, soon no one did.
Rhaena stopped to inspect where the original marble floors were in the process of being restored, then added, "The bones of it all are still good, though, I think we could really make something here." Another unspoken sentiment hung in the air, I think we could make people want to come here.
There was no singular why for what had endeared the young Lord to Rhaena, she found him clever and darkly comedic in the same way she adored in both Baela and Aemond. She found it hard not to like anyone who shared her enthusiasm for cosmetics, potions, and all things aesthetic when other's derision had gone hand in hand with her passion for as long as she had held it. In a broader sense, it delighted her to know a boy who, despite every incentive not to, seemed unable not to love so many of the supposedly feminine’ facets of life that had gotten Rhaena written off as a waste of time by not only other boys but other people so frequently.
"Tell me, my Lord," Rhaena smiled once more while watching Davos inspect the space for himself, "What do you wish to bring here most? I sent you those listings you requested of the kinds of treatments and products that would likely sell best. However, if you'll induldge an observation on operating between the lines of propriety amongst this court, the best approach isn't to supply what's popular. It is to make them envy whatever you wish to supply."

tuesday again 11/5/2024
i am going to do my absolute fucking best to stay off the internet today. also the next time i write one of these i will be goddamn thirty. yeesh.
listening
it took three hours to make a normally brisk 50-minute trip back from the airport on sunday bc there were simply so many accidents. my phone wasn't charging, i was kind of locked into the one way i actually knew how to get home, it was pouring, and the only radio station that was reliably coming through was the local dad rock station.
youtube
i don't think i've ever actually heard this song all the way through before! i have of course heard the chorus in eight billion advertisements and trailers etc, but i tuned in right at the lyrics
I was a willow last night in my dream I bent down over a clear running stream Sang you the song that I heard up above And you kept me alive with your sweet flowing love
big ren faire lady of shallott vibes.

witch hat atelier, the first twelve volumes that are out in english anyway. let's yoink the setup from the fan wiki.
Tumblr media
Coco, a girl living in a small village, had been dreaming of becoming a magician since little. But people who don't know how to use magic since birth are unable to become magicians, or witness the moment magic occurs. But one day, Coco accidentally saw Qifrey, a magician that was visiting the village casting a spell. Ecstatic to finally know how magic works, she tries it immediately and transforms her mother into a stone statue. With the help of Qifrey and his disciples, Coco will embark in a magical journey to save her mother.
Tumblr media
this gets a lot of ghibli comparisons, and i get it-- there's a lot of concern about healing scars from a near-cataclysmic magical war, lots of contraptions, bucolic countryside, loving shots of food, etc. i think there is a focus on academia and cohort-building, and how networking is a profession all to itself, that we do not generally see in ghibli films. i think the comp pull should go beyond the aesthetics, as well, but ghibli is still a good comp-- the world of witch hat atelier is dangerous and can hurt or kill you, but it treats the reader's heart with the same care a ghibli movie will. things may not be happily ever after or go perfectly at all times, but there are no twists for the sake of twists, and it doesn't sneer or make fun of you for caring about a character. there are no whedonesque "well THAT happened!" moments. these characters are going to learn and grow and you will learn and grow along with them goddamnit. it is queer but incidentally queer. the folx side of the fags-folx spectrum will feel very welcome here but this is not a tenderqueer kind of gay book. characters are incidentally gay because of course they are, that's just how the world works, look at all the fullness of human expression you can encounter in your one short life, why NOT be gay
Tumblr media
i did not expect this series to kickstart a fresh wave of grief for my own academic experience. coco leans on her cohort so much and they truly do work together to solve problems and come up with good solutions and i wish i had had that kind of astronomy experience. it's kind of cold comfort that i don't know and have never heard of a woman having a good astronomy experience.
Tumblr media
witch hat atelier: very fun to sink into the details on a page (Kamome Shirahama knows how functional but pretty clothes work), endlessly charming veneer on a very taut game of political ethics happening in the grownups' background

happy noirvember!!!

Another Man's Poison (1952, dir. Rapper) courtesy of Kanopy's little revolving carousel of new noir films.
An English mystery writer (Bette Davis) kills her husband, then tries to kill a man (Gary Merrill) posing as her husband.
In his review in New Statesman and Nation, Frank Hauser wrote "No one has ever accused Bette Davis of failing to rise to a good script; what this film shows is how far she can go to meet a bad one."
a plot that could only happen in a country where appearances are everything. i must agree with mr hauser and most of the critics of the time who said Huh???? to the script and basic premise. AND the ending is a little too pat. a breakneck ninety minutes filmed in three months where its stage play bones show. however i really like Bette Davis and it's so much fun to watch Bette Davis pace around an English manor house like a caged tiger.

deep cleaned my entire house. drove three hundred miles this weekend to pick up my sister and her friend from the airport, go to the ren faire, come back from the ren faire, and take them back to the airport. houston delivered to me some of the worst fucking driving experiences i have ever had here. really upsetting torrential downpour for nearly an hour on a road with no shoulder to speak of.
the actual ren faire was fun! i did not realize how vital a chair or bench with a fucking back was to my rest and recovery. it was nice to go with fellow adults and not help wrangle several small children, as fun as a kid-friendly experience can be. got my overpriced gyro for the year. got my bootleg anime merch for the year. wish it hadn't rained but i feel very smug for packing enough umbrellas and ponchos.

Do you mind explaining what which houses means ? I find this topic really interesting
🌸1st house it is your rising sign- how u act, how u look, your presence, how others see you, your energy outwards. Sports and where you put your energy. How others notice you and how you are noticed. What are you known for & what impression you leave on others. For ex.: capricorn rising you will always leave an impression of respect and strength. Jupiter in 1st house - people will see you as a confident and outgoing person. Neptune- you will always leave a magical impression and mystery on people but overall fairy vibes. Sun - Pride will always be with you and people will see you as a person who shines (many times the sun covers a person's sadness).
🧁2nd house- your values, money, food, music, how u take care of things, your self esteem. Things that are close to your heart and that you always carry with you. What do you hold onto the most and what is very important to you.
🧃3rd house- communication, thinking, speaking in public or in general, writing, books, relatives, siblings, neighbors, classmates, school. What attitude do you have towards learning, early schooling. Your best friend. Which opinion do you hold the most and how is your communication perceived by others. What is your way of expressing yourself. How seriously you take communication.
☕️4th house- family, mom- your relationship with her, your safe place, home, house, your private life. What is your relationship with your family like and what kind of family do you want for yourself. Where is your home and where you feel with all your heart that this is your place. Your fav things, people..cuz this is cancer house they always have their favorite stuff. Where do you go when you feel sad & what is place that always makes you feel better.

This house also represents how serious you are in dating. What is important to you in dating and how we perceive them. Where are your dates usually. For ex.: taurus in 5th house- old school def, gemini in 5th house- always something else, but many times it can be a library, a school maybe haha, cancer 5th house - at home, scorpio in 5th house- mysterious place. This house shows where you find the greatest joy of all.
🫧6th house- work, where do you see yourself working and what is your way of working, routine, colleagues, lifestyle (how u function during the day), health, hygiene, animals. What part of your life are you most critical of. Also 6th house is your physical body-how you see your body and how it looks. 6th house gemini- usually you are skinny or tiny, 6th house taurus- you have a more muscular body, 6th house capricorn- you have bone bruises or they are more visible.
🩵7th house- relationships, friends, marriage, other people, beauty, aesthetics. How you act in a relationship, your partner. What kind of panther do you need to feel fulfilled. What kind of wedding do you want & how much does marriage mean to you. Inhaling and exhaling slowly, Xisuma nodded, and for what felt like the millionth time, tapped into his admin magic. The familiar purple screen and keyboard appeared behind his closed eyes, and the rest of the physical world began to fall away.
But this time, Xisuma reached for something deeper than his admin magic.
It was pretty obvious that aside from his helmet, Xisuma didn’t really look like or appear to be any sort of hybrid. He was strong, but being tall meant that his strength didn’t seem out of the ordinary. He was quick, but many skills could be attained with practice and time. He was oddly attuned to admin magic, but there were many admins out there (*cough* Dream *cough*) who were fully human but incredibly skilled with admin magic. His features all appeared to be that of a normal human, and the helmet could be explained away as an aesthetic choice or an aid to a lung illness of some sort.
But Xisuma was still a hybrid, and he was a hybrid who’s mob-kin were some of the most mysterious beings in the entire universe. Primarily because they existed on a plane that was invisible to most other players and mobs. Secondarily because they had the uncanny to warp, manipulate, and distort code. An ability that had inevitably been passed down to Xisuma himself.
The abilities of the voidkind always worked best when actually present in the void, or at least the End. Using them in the overworld, or especially the nether, could be dangerous. But Xisuma was at the end of his rope of patience and out of ideas, so he reached deep, deep within himself, drawing upon a special kind of magic that caused the edges of his admin screen to pulse with pink and white lights, and strength to flood into his very being.
And then, as the universe came into view and the shrouds of color that were Fwhip and Scott materialized beside him, Xisuma’s soul unfurled itself and he flew .
Code couldn’t, of course, take a physical shape. But Xisuma’s soul had a solid presence here in the universal code, with voidkind magic filling it out and giving it defined lines and planes and mass. As Xisuma sank deeper into the admin trance, grasping the edges of the well of voidkind magic that was buried deep within him and pulling it upwards in a tidal wave, his invisible limbs grew inky and starry as the night sky, long wings spreading to curve through the dazzling streams of code like fins in water. He knew that when his eyes “opened,” they shone bright as stars themselves, and that his mass streamed behind him like a great shadowy cloud.
New fanart! I had a lot of fun with this - I love playing with light and sparkles, lol. Xisuma as this crazy eldritch beastie in the code-space is a headcanon I will never surrender. Come read Rescue Fire to check it out, if you haven’t already!

before i watch the introduction of kevin levin i just wana get a review out of the way
so ive watched up to episode six so far and i think i know why ben 10 is as good and successful and long lasting as it is. i know what this show is really about, and its not aliens. its not about being able to transform. its not about fighting bad guys or solving mysteries or world building.
its a compilation
ben 10, from what ive rewatched so far and what i remember, is a series made by pulling ideas and aesthetics from various mythos and cultural phenomenon, writing a story about each one in an episodic format. a real stranger walks into town kinda show (literally, as the tennysons are on a field trip going to a new place each episode). and as i rewatch this series i keep finding myself wishing we got to see more of the side characters. each. and. every. episode. the actual main cast isn't actually that compelling or interesting. well they are, but enough for multiple series over two decades? no. the tennysons are a vessel through which we get to see other stories.
even the main character isnt so much one character who turns into ten aliens, as ten characters who are also a little kid called ben tennyson. each one of them could probably star in their own series, but dont. instead they are all bunched up together into one series, making them a much more flexible writing tool.
id even argue ben 10 isnt actually a science fiction show. it just needed some common umbrella to put a bunch of disparate stories under, and in true ben 10 fashion, just borrowed an umbrella that happened to be popular and worth exploring at the time.
this format naturally lends itself well to merchandising as well, undoubtedly helping the show to stay on the air. but its far from the only show to be written like this and not all of them are successful. generator rex and the secret saturdays come to mind. so why did ben 10 succeed where these other shows failed?
we could chalk it up to just bad luck - nanobots and criptids just never got as popular as aliens and magic - and while that's definitely part of it i also think these shows were probably just a lot harder to merchandise. with ben 10 you can literally add a new alien every time you wana sell new merch. with the secret saturdays though while you can add more criptids theyre never really part of the main cast iirc, making them a harder sell. and with generator rex...look you can give that boy as many body parts as you want but in the end its the same doll. theres only so much you can do with that.
this becomes more apparent when you look at some other similar franchises that managed to stay successful and popular like adventure time and avatar. both of those are series that are largely episodic (avatar does have an overarching plot but its just vaguely guiding the characters along really), bringing the characters to a new adventure with its own rules and world building (and typically location) each time. these shows also have a way of making even the side characters significant and feel more like part of the main cast, at least for an episode, making them easier to merchandise.
i dont remember much from the secret saturdays but generator rex i know was a pretty serious and plot driven show. and while this doesn't mean its a bad show or that kids wouldn't like it, i do think its easier to sell merchandise and captivate an audience with something that isnt just serious, but fun as well. and besides? i think these shows just kinda lacked color...like literal color. if your goal is to make something that people wana buy and get excited for, then muted browns and greys probably arnt the way to go.
i might have to rewatch these shows as well (they are on my list which only grows and never shrinks) in order to give a better analysis but this based on my memory was the difference that made or broke a show.
and this kinda...i dont know how to feel about this. about ben 10 i mean. in the end its less of a coherent show and more of a...a...a mash up...an amalgamation...a compilation of other stories. like...do i actually like ben 10? or do i just like the writers taste in stories and aesthetic. could i replace ben 10 with a tumblr mutual who recommends me new stories? do i actually wana see more of the side characters? they're probably not much more developed than what we see on screen, and while they could probably have their own story - probably do somewhere - im not sure if ben 10 can make them interesting enough to carry more than one episode each.
there is another show like this - steven universe. it keeps telling you just enough that you know theres something there. you dont know what it is but you can sorta figure it out but you don't actually know. and you know you dont know. and you wana know and that keeps you engaged. but in steven universe that comes from actual world building. it originates from the show. in ben 10? it comes from somewhere else. and idk how to feel about that.

These Witches Don't Burn duology by Isabel Sterling
one of my favourite YA reads in recent years!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Elemental witches! The magic is somewhere between Winx Club/W.I.T.C.H (sans the magical girl transformations) and Avatar, and it’s just so familiar and fun.
The narrator authentically sounds like a teenager, but remains engaging to any reader.
Diverse ensemble cast with very detailed characters.
Ballet aesthetic with some of the main characters—this really brought back my childhood. It was so vividly written and beautiful.
City/forest ambience is really well-done.
MURRRDERRR!!! Which came as a complete shock.
Things turn into a very dark and intense mystery/thriller/adventure with angsty betrayals.
And yet it still manages to remain so wholesome and warm.
The second-chance romance and other relationships are very sweet.
The sequel is as good as the first book and the ending is really satisfying!
I recieved a free ARC at an author event a few years ago, and I really wasn't expecting much from the duology. You can imagine my surprise when I finally picked it up. The audiobook is very fun, and the plot includes everything I want in a YA read—fantasy, romance, friendships, aesthetics, even murder and adventure. Truly one of my favourite series ever probably. I've seen some pictures of copies floating around so I just want to throw in my enthusiastic two cents—Highly, highly recommended!

Happy storyteller Saturday (glad we’re bringing this back)! Your characters go to the county fair! What do they eat? What rides do they go on? Who gets so into petting goats they forget to even look at rides? Who wins a questionable number of clearly rigged games? Who gets their face painted? Who overhauls their entire aesthetic based on booths of scarves and accessories? Who finds something hyperspecific to learn about while the others tap their feet impatiently? Etc.
(that last one is based on me going to the county fair and becoming so engrossed in a local history lecture at the museum exhibit I did not even go check out the rides)
I still live other than dreaming! (Even if Empty Names is very hiatused right now while I deal with IRL stuff.)
Thanks for including me on this. It's a fun prompt.
Empty Names crew at the county fair:
Food:
Ashan consumes a shocking quantity of various iterations of fried dough covered in sugar considering his figure and general health consciousness and ambivalence toward taste and texture. This whole county fair thing is one giant nostalgia trip for him from the little bit of childhood he remembers from before getting isekaied into a magical otherworld for a decade.
Given that if they're all at a county fair there's probably something weird and supernatural afoot (and also because she's a bit of a germophobe) Lacuna's hesitant to eat anything, but eventually Eris talks her into getting a slice of pizza that was probably frozen and microwaved. Eris gets her own couple of mediocre pizza slices in solidarity.
Sullivan finds some sort of sausage or burger made from highly unsettling mystery meat that may or may not be of this earth and may or may not be the reason they're all here. He makes a point of making sure everyone is there to watch in horror as he swallows it whole.
Road gets split from the group and is found again with an empty paper plate and-soggy-but-beverageless paper cup. Everyone gets distracted by something before it's revealed what they ate.
Rides and petting goats:
After remembering that Ashan's midsed out on a lot of Earth stuff, Eris makes it her mission to take Ashan on every single ride at the fair he didn't meet the height requirement for as a child.
Lacuna's being distracted by petting the goats is one half genuine and one half an excuse to not go on the more intense rides with Eris and Ashan.
Road and Sullivan go into the house of mirrors because that's a prime spot for weirdness to leak through and cause problems, but all the reflections give Road an existential crisis that Sullivan has to pull them out of.
Face painting:
Not really something any of them would go for. Unless things escalate with whatever monster/villain of the week they're at the fair for and Ashan, Lacuna, and Road need to commandeer the booth to start painting esoteric symbols on people's foreheads for psychic protection or something.
Aesthetic overhaul of scarves and accessories:
This one's going to be Lacuna, but only if it's taking place post-catgirl transformation. New confidence and new body demand a new look.
Engrossed in hyperspecific local history:
This might actually turn into a group activity, or at least be equally likely for any of them that happens to wander into the opportunity. Lacuna's kind of a nerd like that, Eris and Road both just generally like to learn about new places, and Sullivan and Ashan are both genre savvy enough to realize this is where one finds the key plot-relevant details about the spooky local legend (Eris and Road too, but they'd be interested even without that).

The Conflict Challenge for @asongofgoldenfireandblackblood
It was rare for Rhaena to walk the Red Keep halls unaccompanied, but she had just left the courtyard after speaking with some ladies around her age whose attendance was rare in King's Landing—determined to ingratiate her peers amongst the daughters of The Reach to the new kind of court her mũna, Baela, and Rhaena herself were bringing to life—and was taking the years-long memorized steps back to the wing of the castle she shared with her twin and their ladies. A few years ago she would've been overwhelmingly anxious just to walk the well-beaten path alone, but a few years ago she had not developed the reputation that now led people to move out of her way without a moment's hesitation and smile as she always made sure to return their greetings in kind, a few years ago she was not a Princess of the Realm engaged to marry the Prince-Hand, a few years ago this was not Queen Rhaenyra's court.
"Oi! In the pink!" Rhaena did not startle, but still snapped towards the voice quickly, stopping as she was about to start up the stairs in the entry hall and came to face the boy who'd called out to her. He was still a boy to be sure, at least, he was still young, no more than five years her senior she was certain. Rhaena didn't recognize him, but he looked similar to several Marcher families from the Stormlands, and a handful of members she'd met from Houses in the Westerlands; He had the same angular face and almond-shaped eyes as the Lannisport Lannisters, but the all black attire and mop of dark curls that suited him well enough almost made her think of Gysella's family—no, she'd have told her if any of the Blacktydes were sailing in—and all the lions were far too proud to go out not flaunting their house colors in some way; he must be a Dondarrion, Prince Aegon got along well with their lord and his brother, and she'd only ever heard good things about the family herelf.
"May I help you?" Rhaena greeted him with her usual, bright smile.
The boy seemed to be teetering between flustered and annoyed, asking bluntly, "Have you seen my siblings?"
"Do I look like I know the whereabouts of every noble child in this castle?" Her tone remained gentle as she crossed her arms, always a firm believer in returning the energy others offered her.
"Well, no," He laughed, and Rhaena could hear the words he had the good sense not to add aloud in the noise, 'you don't look like you know much of anything', she knew the sound of boys laughing at her far too well.
Strike One; Her father and grandmother had instilled in Rhaena young—each in their own ways—that men are dangerous creatures, and more dangerous still to women as beautiful and privileged as her. Don't allow one to set off your alarm bells three times in a row, after that you'll either need to be leaving, or resorting to screaming.
He continued on, "But you look like the girls who circle around those Princesses who've made leashing a fair few of them look easy."
The list of potential candidates for the boy's identity narrowed to all of three in the same instant she realized he was unaware of hers. All of the options were indictments unto themselves, she kept her tone unconcerned, "I may, who might you be?"
"Lord Toron Greyjoy, at your service," He offered a grin that did not reach his eyes while imbuing the greeting with unmistakable mockery, appearing to expect as soon as he spoke that the name alone would scare her; it very well may have frightened the Crane, Oakheart, and Caswell girls back in the courtyard, but she was far too aware the implicit threat in his tone was nothing more than yappy-barking.
Strike Two; A mixture of loathing and morbid curiosity kept Rhaena planted.
"Aren't you one of what? Fourteen? My Lord, I know for certain I can't tell you all their whereabouts."
Toron barked out another laugh, "No, that would be quite a feat, even their mothers usually don't know where any of them who aren't their blood are. I'm just after the older third though, Asha, Rodrik, and Elyanna, there was some noise about them going somewhere with Briar and Megga, but now I've lost track of all five of them and if they come back with another surprise boyfriend or spur-of-the-moment...well, whatever you lot call all of that—" He just gestured vaguely towards Rhaena's bright pink gown, elaborately styled twists, and artistically designed cosmetics. "—I'll be the one with hells to pay for not keeping them out of trouble.'
"Haven't seen any of them I'm afraid," She responded placidly, it was all she could do to keep herself from grabbing Toron by the collar and scolding him like a disrespectful child. Rodrik had assured her four or five times by now their father's heir was far more charming than himself, but he proved to be as sweet and mildly oblivious as ever; Toron was charismatic, if he was trying maybe he'd even be magnetic, but he didn't contain an ounce of charm.
"Have you seen the Crown Princess then? They all speak so highly of her, I imagine it's good fun to keep them as her own little, captivated audience. Or Lady Tyshara, for that matter? She appears no longer satisfied with only collaring my little brother and seems to want the whole lot of them as pets."
Rhaena nearly broke as it dawned on her with every passing word he was joking. His grin growing but never managing to spark up his eyes as he spoke, clearly expecting her to consider his siblings no more than menagerie displays, and content to laugh along without even the pretext of them being worth greater respect. It struck her how much he must truly believe the only way they could've found favor amongst her circle was through meekness, obedience, subservience…how happy he must still be to drink Lord Dalton's saltwater lies about loyalty and loneliness she only knew through coaxed confessions and secrets shared between seedlings. "I'm sorry, I don't, and I'm expected upstairs."
Strike three; Toron didn't get to know the easiest way to open up the scabs on her notoriously bleeding heart was to speak ill of her friends, and above all her twin. She was not in the business of educating men on the alternatives to pesky little siblings and mothers still alive and well to keep track of them at all.
"That must make you Baela," He scoffed as she began to walk away. "I must admit I'm disappointed our future Queen can be so easily driven away by mild taunts. Or you're not, and you're truly just too dim to know, and too embarrassed to admit they don't tell you anything, Lady Velaryon."
For a split second Rhaena wished she was a Velaryon, blessed with all of her mother's grace and none of her father's nature, just so she could walk away. But she wasn't, and the fight in her that drove her to claim one of the oldest living dragons alone just to prove she could, and made her extravagantly embrace what most considered the most contemptible parts of herself just to show she could outshine them all while doing so, compelled her back to face him.
Strike four; He brought this on himself, she knew his siblings weren't going to yell at him for all this childish cruelty, but by the Gods someone had to and she could use the stress-relief of some screaming.
"Since you've decided to put our niceties aside, you will address me as your Grace or Princess, your choice. Though, I think I won't like hearing either near as much off your lips as all the rest of your—I must say—far more silver-tongued siblings."
"Princess Rhaena," He sneered, "And here I thought you'd at least have enough sense not to unlock your dollhouse doors while this castle is crawling with all manner of eyesores."
Rhaena finally laughed, humorless and mocking as she knew he had tried to keep his from sounding, "Aw, poor pup, are you growling from the anxiety of your brother and sisters deciding to live outside of your great, big shadow? Or just in the hope that if daddy hears you did it so loud and scary he'll give you a pat on the head and a treat?"
"You dare to—" Toron's hand went to the scabbard on his hip, but Rhaena called calmly to the Kingsguard standing only a few feet away at the doors to the Great Hall,
"Ser Lorent, if Lord Greyjoy here draws his blade, seize him before he causes a panic."
"Aye Princess," The Kingsguard had known and often guarded Rhaena since she first came to live at the Red Keep when she was not quite ten, he didn't need her to ask, she simply needed him on alert.
"And to call your guard on me too, how—"
"How pitiful," She stopped his raging before it could truly start. "All those cruel jabs and you can't handle a bit of mockery in return without resorting to the one skill you know most can't compete against. But it hurts, doesn't it? To be treated like the dog you accuse your siblings of becoming over such banalities as lipgloss or eyeliner. Are you that insecure? The heir to a Great House, perhaps the best swordsman of your age, yet still threatened by your younger siblings becoming more popular, shining brighter, simply being prettier than you."
"The last thing I want is for you to find me pretty, I can assure you."
Rhaena laughed again, unable to hide her growing amusement, "If that was true you wouldn't feel the need to insult and demean anyone who wants different, you simply wouldn't care. No—" She pouted, brushing a stray curl away from his face before he could swat her back. "—You wish I could make you half as pretty to the girls in this court as I could see a vision for within ten seconds of meeting your brother. You want to be adored like Asha, sought after like Briar and even little Lysa, envied like Rodrik and Tyshara have become. Because for the first time in your lives you're not the golden son of the black kraken, you're just another young Lord driven to self-sabatoge because you don't know what or who you want to be besides your father's favorite hunting hound. But the harsh truth is all the things I do you were too self-conscious to even say out loud, all my aesthetic, romantic, cosmetic, idealistic sensibilities you find so distasteful? It's nothing more than set-dressing, I don't write new scripts, just have a talent for knowing which backdrop would best set the scene. All the fixes and improvements I could give you would be completely worthless, because there's nothing in this world uglier than a bully, laughing at everyone else just to feel big enough to face the world. And that won't change until you can conjure up a new vision for yourself."
Toron didn't speak, Rhaena didn't care to know how he would respond, and turned to leave. "Last I heard Asha, Gysella, and Briar went to the stables, no clue about the others, and if you come looking for them in my chambers I'll see you spend a night in the cells for the intrusion. Consider us even," She glanced back to smile brightly at him one last time, "We're all friends now after all, maybe you should be scared."

Good News:
Tumblr media
I’ve just finished Maho Tsukai. Which means it’s finally time for the review
Cure Up Rapapa! Keyboard, project my thoughts onto the canvas!
First of all I love the characters. A lot. Mirai, Haa, and Mofurun being silly and stupid with Liko as the straightman is the best thing ever, and Haa is so insanely adorable even when fully grown. I’ve loved her ever since she started talking because omg she’s so silly. The 12 Faces Of Haa-Chan was this season’s peak episode
And my thoughts on Mirai & Liko are as you’d expect. It honestly feels weird to me that Liko is a purple Cure because they’re just so much of a package deal that I ended up thinking they were both pink
And aside from the main characters, I feel there were fewer important side characters in this season but I enjoyed the ones that were. I never got to gushing about Cassie too much because I was too busy focusing on other things but I really loved the concept of the crystal ball being whatever personality traits she has. And Mofurun & Chikurun are really cute together, and I love the happy ending that Batty & all the other servants of Dokurokushe got. As well as how Batty got to be super badass in the way he wiped the floor with Orbo’s last Donyokubaru, and the way they returned. I do wish that Gamets & Haa could’ve actually gotten their epic battle though
And Dokurokushe & Yamoh also getting their own happy ending in the last episode was really cute
Though there is one character I really disliked and that was the second female villain because I hate when the female villain’s only purpose is to be the annoying and weak and stupid one in a roster of cool strong smart boys. I get if there was no room to make her important but at least make her have any purpose other than to be the extremely mockable one who constantly whines about getting mocked
Also slightly unrelated but I love how Ichika being the only one at the KiraPati implies that that episode takes place after she left
And moving on to story,
I really loved it. First of all I love magical school stories due to both my experience with other ones like Jewelpet Twinkle and The Elementalists and just the aesthetic, but more specifically portraying light and darkness as the will of life to spread vs the inevitability of death was a really cool thing to do with the magic season. And I love the lore behind the Magic & Non-Magic Worlds. The old world and everything we know about it is so beautiful. And Haa’s final form being Mother Rapapa herself was so cool, as well as the Precure’s whole journey ultimately being about restoring her power
Also the thing with Orbo having created Dark Magic was cool because before that point I was starting to get kinda worried that Dokurokushe and Duesmast would have nothing to do with each other
Also like normally the Precure struggle with the final battle to some extent but the way that the Maho Girls wiped the floor with Duesmast??? /vpos They broke a bit of a sweat dealing with his agents but after that it was a piece of cake
And finally regarding music,
God I love this season’s music so much. It’s just all so beautiful and wondrous and mysterious and glorious and sfkfjdjfjdjfjdfjdj god I love it so much. And the transformation music especially. Ruby and Topaz’s transformations were the only really memorable ones between Mirai & Liko but I love Haa’s Emerald transformation theme so much. It’s so peaceful and warm (Just like Cure Felice herself and the slowness of her transformation) and the background vocals (Which are real lyrics by the way) remind me of Star Twinkle. And the song for the Extreme Rainbow is so exceedingly magical and twinkly and sparkly (As well as the Extreme Rainbow itself being my favorite special attack)
And of course the first opening slaps and is so so so fun to sing. I really want to memorize it all someday
Overall, 9/10. Everything was really enjoyable and everything that wasn’t is overall pretty easy to look past
I’m gonna be taking a short break after watching the movie, and then I’ll be moving to Tropical Rogue next

[Review] Wario Land 4 (GBA)
Tumblr media
A disappointing misstep... am I the only one who thinks this??
Despite coming so soon after Wario Land 3 (the fourth Wario Land game), Wario Land 4 (the fifth Wario Land game) makes a lot of changes. It tries to synthesise new ideas with the old and ends up feeling like a bit of a mess. It has a good reputation but honestly I don’t get it!
Tumblr media
The first thing you notice is the visual refresh. We’re on the cusp of Warioware completely revolutionising Wario’s characterisation and setting, and WL4 gets a bit of a ripple from that. Wario is flexing and posing, driving a muscle car… read the manual though and it leans harder than ever into his hilariously gross habits and self-aggrandising mannerisms. Unlike a lot of other things in the game, this combination works well.
Tumblr media
In a premise most reminiscent of Virtual Boy Wario Land, Wario is on the hunt for treasure and goes to explore an ancient ruin only to stumble on a series of wacky out-of-place environments contained within and a big weirdo out of nowhere as would-be antagonist. The use of magic portals does a little something for plausibility, I guess. Did Wario really need a princess to rescue though? Was that necessary? Shokora at least has a presence in the story thanks to her transformation into a mysterious cat who pops up in cutscenes / Mr. Game & Watch-style silhouette person who acts as shopkeeper.
Tumblr media
The levels feel initially like throwbacks to pre-3 style, with a critical path and side rooms, where it isn’t always clear which is which. But you do need to thoroughly explore because getting all four chests in each level is mandatory to unlock the zone bosses, plus there’s a key to find to advance to the next level. Having to redo entire levels if you miss any of these is a real drag. There's also optional mini-puzzle challenges sectioned off in their own rooms, removed from the flow and aesthetic of the rest of the level. But things change when you find the frog switch: a giant timer appears, and you have to backtrack to where you came in. Sometimes things change in the level, or you find a new path to return via, but often those progress items are hidden in this time-pressured sequence as well.
Tumblr media
Far from being an exciting combination of ideas, I think these concepts of structure and design are at odds, pulling in different directions. Similarly, the non-damaging conditions from WL2 and 3 return here, but in a position of reduced prominence, and they've reinstated a health meter mechanic on top. (The GBA's shoulder buttons also prompted a return of the run button from VBWL, but it feels underused.) Removing the timer and health system was a breath of fresh air in WL2... now they're back, and for what!?
Tumblr media
The boss battles are another miss for me. They're also timed, and you have to do them quick to get maximum treasure, which is otherwise kind of a non-factor. Collecting coins in levels lets you play one of three minigames (none of which are very fun) to earn tokens. You can spend these in a shop before the boss door, for a variety of effects that simply remove health from the boss. This Breath of the Wild-style "reward" of making the fights shorter by just subtracting from their health bar is such an odd choice to me. The fights themselves are fine at best, but the bosses are visually overdesigned in a purposeful, grotesque way; I suppose it's meant to be amusingly absurd but I just found them ugly eyesores.
Tumblr media
Playing the Wario Land games one by one, I've enjoyed seeing them refine the concept and bring in fresh ideas. WL4 on the other hand feels like it's trying to force ideas in and fumbling in the process, with a result that doesn't quite come together. Even though the play control is tighter and snappier, the game is less than the sum of its parts, less pure than previous Wario Lands. The music is really strange too, trying for some kind of esoteric wackiness but maybe trying too hard... The series has never looked better, but this might be a sign that it's losing its direction. Meanwhile Nintendo R&D1 themselves are soon to be restructured, splintering into oversight roles and smaller teams, and I think the "Wario platformer" series suffers as a consequence, while Warioware's star rises. We'll see in the next few reviews I suppose...

Tagging system
I'm putting this in its own post, finally, instead of my introduction post, so I can put Everything on it.. For my own reference mostly, but a bunch of these are also fun to browse though.
Fandom tags:
(most active as of writing this (9/22/23) are the Stormlight Archive and Transformers. I'm sure I'll think of more after I post this, but here they are)
#stormlight archive Book series by Brandon Sanderson, in the #cosmere. Intricate worldbuilding and well-written characters :D
#transformers, especially #tfe (Transformers Earthspark) My older brother got me into it last summer. It's so cool i love it when they transform
#vorkosigan saga 80s sci-fi book series by Lois McMaster Bujold. Read the series here
#tog (Tower of God) Webtoon/Manwha/Anime by SIU that makes me go insane occasionally. Read it here, all 500+ chapters of it (it's been updating for like 12 years). I like the worldbuilding in the Stormlight Archive the most based on how well it fits together, but ToG wins in terms of aesthetics. Imagine an incomprehensively vast and mysterious tower with continent-sized floors and ceilings that look like skies and a magical substance that is neither water nor air, with an overarching aquatic theme. oghghr
#mp100 (Mob Psycho 100) Manga/anime by ONE that Reigen (#2 tumblr sexyman) and Mob (autism swag winner) are from. My favorite anime ever i think it changed me forever in a good way
#flight rising Petsite but the pets are dragons. most likely if I'm neither on tumblr nor doing something useful I am on fr. Look at my dragons boy
#minecraft I see posts about it often enough that I went "I should have a tag for this." viola

GAME NIGHT, UPGRADED: WHY PLAYMOJO IS YOUR NEW GO-TO
Tumblr media
In an era defined by digital transformation, entertainment has found itself at a thrilling crossroads where convenience, immersion, and technology intersect. For those who cherish game night the lively gathering of friends, laughter echoing through the room, snacks within reach, and the adrenaline-pumping thrill of competition a new chapter has begun. Game night, once tethered to dusty board games and predictable party routines, has been revitalized. And at the core of this modern renaissance is a vibrant new platform that promises to make every evening unforgettable. Welcome to the next evolution in entertainment. This is game night, upgraded.
A NEW BREED OF DIGITAL FUN
The idea of playing games to unwind is as old as civilization itself. From ancient dice games to 20th-century classics like Monopoly and Uno, we’ve always craved a fun, interactive way to bond. However, in today’s hyper-connected society, the expectations for game night have shifted dramatically.
The platform at the center of this transformation seamlessly blends the best elements of competitive play, strategic challenge, and user-friendly design. It offers a curated universe of interactive experiences where every click and decision matters. Far from static or repetitive, it’s a dynamic ecosystem that evolves based on your preferences, challenges your reflexes, sharpens your mind, and rewards your strategy.
ACCESSIBLE ENTERTAINMENT AT YOUR FINGERTIPS
One of the most impressive hallmarks of this new-age game night platform is its accessibility. Whether you're nestled in a cozy apartment in the city or relaxing in a countryside retreat, the experience is always just a few taps away. No downloads. No bloated software packages. Just instant access to engaging content, round-the-clock.
Cross-platform compatibility ensures that you can jump in from your laptop, tablet, or mobile device without any compromise in quality. That level of fluidity removes technological friction and lets the fun take center stage. It’s entertainment on your terms whenever, wherever.
A DIVERSE SELECTION FOR EVERY TYPE OF PLAYER
Not all game nights are created equal. Some people relish intense head-to-head challenges. Others lean toward cooperative gameplay where collaboration trumps competition. Still others seek light-hearted, low-stakes amusement to unwind after a long day. This upgraded experience caters to every mood and taste.
From puzzles and trivia to fast-paced action and brain-bending strategy games, there is something here for everyone. Each category is thoughtfully developed to stimulate different skill sets memory, logic, reflexes, and problem-solving. The beauty lies in the variety and the ability to tailor your experience to suit your mood or the preferences of your group.
IMMERSIVE GRAPHICS AND SOUND DESIGN
Gone are the days when digital games meant clunky graphics and uninspired audio. Modern platforms have raised the bar for visual and auditory excellence. The aesthetics now rival those of cinematic productions, and the soundscapes are curated to elevate the emotional resonance of each experience.
Each game is a carefully crafted world, rich with vivid detail and responsive animations. Whether you’re navigating a futuristic cityscape or solving mysteries in an enchanted forest, the environment pulls you in and refuses to let go. It’s more than just playing it’s being part of a story unfolding in real time.
COMMUNITY AND COMPETITION IN HARMONY
The magic of game night has always been in the camaraderie. It's about shared laughs, inside jokes, and the friendly banter that flows when people come together. This upgraded digital experience doesn’t just preserve that it amplifies it.
With features like live chat, multiplayer matchups, and community leaderboards, your experience becomes social by design. You’re not just playing against the system. You’re engaging with real people from all over the world. The sense of global community that arises from this connectivity adds a new dimension to game night. It's no longer confined to your living room. It’s now part of a digital village alive with activity.
PERSONALISED EXPERIENCES THROUGH SMART DESIGN
Intelligent algorithms and user-centric design principles drive a tailored experience that feels crafted just for you. As you play, the system gets smarter recognizing your preferences, learning your habits, and adapting content to match your style.
This isn’t just a play mojo; it's a digital concierge for your entertainment life. Whether it’s recommending new games based on your previous favorites, notifying you about upcoming tournaments, or offering bonuses that align with your style, the experience becomes uniquely yours.
BUILT-IN INCENTIVES AND REWARDS
One of the most compelling aspects of this enhanced game night solution is its reward-driven structure. There’s something inherently satisfying about being acknowledged for your skills and effort. By embedding systems that track progress, reward streaks, and celebrate milestones, the platform elevates motivation and prolongs engagement.
These aren’t just superficial badges or stars either. The reward mechanisms are intelligently integrated into the gameplay and progression system, offering both tangible and intangible benefits that make every session feel meaningful. It’s not just about winning. It’s about growing, achieving, and being recognized.
SAFE, SECURE, AND RESPONSIBLE
In the digital age, trust is everything. When you dive into an immersive gaming experience, you want to know that your data is secure, your time is respected, and your engagement is valued. That’s why transparency, privacy protocols, and responsible usage design are integral components of this platform.
You’re never left in the dark. You always have control over your settings, activity, and notifications. Whether you’re playing solo or in a group, your well-being remains a top priority. The system is crafted to encourage healthy play habits and ensure that your fun never comes at a personal cost.
BREAKING DOWN BARRIERS
This isn't just about changing how we play. It’s about reimagining who gets to play. Traditional game nights often excluded those who didn’t have access to the right tools, space, or companions. But this upgraded format demolishes those barriers.
All you need is an internet connection and a spirit of curiosity. Suddenly, you’re part of a global stage, facing off with or joining forces with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds. It democratizes entertainment and turns game night into a cultural exchange, not just a pastime.
A PLATFORM WITH A PURPOSE
At its core, this experience is about joy. But it’s also about connection, resilience, and creativity. In a world that often pulls us apart, something as simple as a game can bring us back together. It can help us unwind, spark our imagination, and remind us of the value of play.
Every detail from the sleek interface to the adaptive challenges has been engineered with intention. You’re not just logging on. You’re stepping into a space where fun meets fulfillment.
THE FUTURE OF FUN STARTS NOW
We are living in a golden age of interactive entertainment. With advancements in cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and social integration, the boundaries between real life and virtual play continue to blur. For game night enthusiasts, this means a future where every experience is more vibrant, inclusive, and emotionally rewarding than the last.
Whether you're rekindling your love for game night or diving into it for the first time, the time to upgrade is now. You're not just embracing a new platform. You're embracing a movement one that celebrates joy, connection, and limitless possibility.
So gather your crew, grab your favorite snack, and clear your calendar. Because game night has been reborn. And it’s more exhilarating than ever.
