hey instead of bullying or scaring you into switching to firefox, let me tell you why i LOVE firefox and how my online life has improved significantly since installing it

- the setup process is easy, and even fun! if you’re using tumblr rn, you can handle it, and if you’re the kind of tumblr user who likes customizing your blog or tinkering with xkit, you can have a lot of fun personalizing really granular settings and picking themes and extensions and everything, it’s very customizable and i happily spent like 2 hours getting everything perfect.

- you can use a command line entry tool to change specific settings right from the search bar! i did this to make firefox stop auto filling my email information since i use a different password locker (which you should too! try bitwarden!), and it was easier than digging through a bunch of submenus for a setting i wasn’t sure existed. you can just turn shit off!

- there’s a preset theme called aurora that’s purple and VERY pretty

- once you get ublock origin and as many other blockers as you’d like set up, no ads, anywhere, ever! streaming sites, youtube, all the basics, totally no stress and no compatibility issues for me

- in browser screenshot and picture in picture functions!! holy shit i use these every day, the PiP is especially helpful, it replaced an extension i used to use on chrome and it’s leagues better and works on all video content pretty much

- overall better downloads management imo, it’s a lot easier to get to your downloads and find them later

- better bookmark system, with the ability to organize your bookmarks with searchable tags and assign them a shortcut you can type into the search bar to go to

- containers! you can have two accounts to the same website open in two different tabs and switch between them without having to switch accounts. also gives firefox the ability to contain facebook and their trackers, so you can click that party invite link without feeling like you just let mark zuckerberg into your house

these were just off the top of my head, i love firefox a lot and actively enjoy using it, which i never felt with chrome! please download firefox!! you will not regret it!!! where’s your fucking rage!!!!!! go!!!!!!!!!

The Alan Moore comic my new blog name is taken from has an interesting background.

In 1988 Thatcher's government banned the "promotion of homosexuality" by local authorities and schools. This law would remain in place in England and Wales until 2003.

Moore already antipathic towards the tories organized a comics anthology to raise funds to oppose the law - AARGH or Artists Against Rampant Government Homophobia.

Moore convinced (or to use his own words "morally blackmail most of them") a lot of famous comic creator to contribute pieces. Art Spiegelman, Frank Miller and Dave Sims all contributed stories. You may have seen the comic Neil Gaiman wrote for it floating around tumblr.

The quality of the comics varies widely but the best of them is the comic Moore himself wrote for it a poem/comic The Mirror of Love. I don't think the original comic is licitly available online but there's a reading of it by Moore on youtube.

The Mirror of Love depicts queer people throughout history. Moving from pre-history to the modern day and Moore's fury at the homophobia of Thatcher's government and then looking to the future.

It's been one of my favourite comics by Moore since I first read it but as an eight page piece that for decades was only available as part of AARGH it doesn't receive a lot of attention.

They'll harp on and on about Bakugou or Sasuke or literally any other Edgy McFightyMan about how DeEP AnD muLTifacEteD he is... when they'd be called a Mary Sue in an instant if they were female, or even worse, made by a Western creator.

They'll gleefully gobble the mass-produced slop that they fill their trough with and gloat about how the overarching plot of the current popular thing is sooooo unbelievably timeless... when said plot is just the same bog-standard shit as in all shounen. The System is Perfect and Flawless, and anybody who dissents is a faceless mass of generic pure evil and is morally acceptable to murder/hospitalize en masse; any antagonists that abuse the rules of the establishment for their own gain are doubly Impure and Sinful for the crime of tainting the Perfect System. It doesn't take long for the original message to get buried as the authors of these works are put through the grinder to stretch out the story as much as possible to meet the lethally high standards of the manga industry, corporate overhead demanding that everything be smothered beneath marketable trends that the unwashed masses prefer to consume.

This shit isn't subtext, it's just borderline text - but point that out, and you get barraged by hordes of shrieking consoomers incensed that you dared to suggest anything being wrong with the current Popular Thing that they've decided is the next timeless work of art... at least until the next Popular Anime comes along and they toss it aside with the rest, eager to start consooming the next batch of fresh slop.

Initially, you were supposed to meet the whole family over dinner, but when a family emergency came up you thought it was canceled. It wasn’t until a couple of hours ago, Sharky informed you that his little sister still wanted to meet you and would be able to.

Even if the rest of the family were gone, Sharky’s little sister Shakira was staying at home and insisted you still come over. The thing was that if it had been the original dinner plans, you would feel much more relieved. Not only would there be more people to keep the attention off of you, but you would have time to slowly build up your confidence by introducing yourself to everyone.

Now, with only Shakira there, you feared for the worst. What if she found it awkward? Or if she didn’t like you? Would she even approve?

Knowing how important the validation from his family was for Sharky, you tried your absolute best to look presentable. You were meeting a teenager, but still. They were opinionated, and some of those opinions they weren’t afraid to share.

Sharky laughs at your distressed look. “Babe, what’s the matter?” He asked genuinely, but you could still hear a tinge of humor in his voice. Typical him.

Your elbows are resting on your knees, face in your hands in the most dramatic position ever. How scared you were was starting to get ridiculous. “What if it all goes to shit?”

The YouTuber raises his brows at the mumble of words coming out of your mouth. He can faintly distinguish what you’re saying, but still questions either way. “What do you mean?”

Pulling away from your hands, you sideways glance at him. “What if she doesn’t like me, sharks.”

Usually, he would comment on the nickname you refused to stop calling him, but right now, even he could tell it wasn’t the right moment. He pulls your perfectly cured hair behind your ear, a show of affection as he leaves his hands tangled in your hair while caressing your cheek.

“There’s no reason for her not to like you,” he reassures. You had been sitting in the car for far too long, but Sharky didn’t care. “She knows how much you mean to me, and I’ve told her all about you. She loves you.”

“Swear you’re not just saying it to make me feel better?” You still want to make sure this isn’t some lie to bring a smile to your face.

Sharky quiets down, an awkward look on his face as he doesn’t speak. Reaching over, you hit him across the chest, a look of betrayal on your face.

“Sharky!”

“I’m joking.” He falls back into his seat in laughter, clutching his stomach like it was the funniest thing in the world. And to him it probably was. Annoying you must’ve been on the top 10 list of his favourite things to do on a daily. “I’m joking, I swear.”

Figuring facing his sister was better than watching him laugh at your misery, you unlock the door and get out. You can hear your boyfriend laugh even louder in the background before you close the door, silencing him for a second.

After the encouragement, you feel a newfound confidence, and even a little excitement to see a new side of Sharky and learn more about him. It wasn’t a secret that you were hopelessly in love with him. You made it clear to everyone with the way you looked at him. To meet his family, even if it was only his sister, meant much more to your than he knew.

Even in your faux annoyed state, you wait for your boyfriend, linking your hands together when he gets to you. With a smile on your face, you walk up to the front door. You’re about to ring the doorbell when Sharky playfully slaps your hand off the button.

“What are you doing?” He speaks, amused. Casually opening the door, he gestures for you to walk in and when you do he closes the door behind him. “Shakira!”

There’s no shame whatsoever present as he basically screams your ear off, calling for his sister. You look at him, casually throwing his shoes off and slap the back of his head. “What’s the matter with you? Why you trynna make me deaf?”

“Did you just hit me?” Sharky almost laughs in disbelief. You only nod.

“So what if I did?” You challenge. Your boyfriend chuckles with a straight face before nodding as if he’s accepting the “challenge” You think you're off the hook until he does something unexpected. Faster than you can even blink, he throws you over his shoulder. “Sharky!”

“Apologise.”

“What?”

“It’s simple.” He tells you, holding you tightly, and you can only imagine the grin on his face. “Apologise or I’ll hold you here for the rest of the evening.”

“I’d rather die.”

Someone clearing their throat interrupts you guys, and you’re left to slowly look up as you make eyecontact with Sharky’s younger sister. Between bickering with him, and being thrown over his shoulder you had completely forgotten the fact that you weren’t in the comfort of your home.

You almost yank yourself from his grip, stumbling to stand in embarrassment. Almost sure you had blown it and made a bad first impression you can’t help but feel a little defeated. But still, you put your hand out to greet her, feeling like it was better if you did it rather than your boyfriend.

“I’m Y/n” you introduce, putting on your best smile. The teenager just looks at you weirdly, and now you’re really fucking scared. You’re about to retract your outstretched hand when she gently pushes it away, and instead leaps forward for a hug. You’re quick to hug her back, already feeling comforted by her genuine acts.

“We’re best friends already.” She tells you simply, completely ignoring her brother as she pulls away from you.

“Oh?” You say, a smile on your face. “We are?”

“Sharky’s told me all about you already.” You turn to him, eyebrows raised. And he’s stood there with an “ I know exactly what she’s talking about but I’m gonna act like i have no idea to save myself the embarrassment”

“I wouldn’t say all about you.” He throws his sister a glare.

“You sat me down to tell me about her whole skincare, I think I can confidently say I know a little too much.” The two of you follow Sharky as he tries to walk away from the situation. With a grin on your face, you throw your arm around his middle, stopping him from running away.

“ I thought you said my skin care was too boring.”

“ It is.”

Shakira laughs. “Doesn’t explain why you explained step for step how she did it.”

You laugh alongside her as the two of you watch the boy free himself from your arms and throw his body on the couch. “ I already hate you two together.”

With a confident smile passed between each other you speak for both you and Shakira. “We’ll make a great team.”

You should watch it.

This is one of those BLs that owes almost nothing to yaoi, although it started a number of tropes that are now endemic to Thai BL. What it is, instead, is a well scripted story of bisexual self-discovery and the inherent chaos of loving someone of the same gender for the first time, all wrapped up in hormones, existing relationships, and communication issues. It is high school queer angst at its messiest. Nothing is going to be easy for these boys because queer isn’t easy but also because life isn’t easy… welcome to adulthood sweethearts.

I'm actually considering a rewatch of these beginning of 2024 in honor of the 10 year anniversary if anyone wants to join.

One of the best live action yaois ever made, with perfectly structured angst, fantastic characters and acting, and no problematic tropes (rare in Japanese BL). The leads have excellent chemistry although it’s low heat there’s still some really cute mutual kisses.

I love this BL because of what I could have been. Just stop watching it after The Sex Scene. Okay?

I weirdly love this but you should know what you are in for: that title. It has a stalking theme meets fated mates and quite a bit of dubious consent. Uke obsessed with seme to the point of losing himself and his identity dies after being rejected, and then has a chance to reboot his life. He decides to save himself by never falling in love. But destiny is a bitch, and this time the seme becomes obsessed with him. This one owes a lot to dark Chinese and Japanese BL, but kind of corrects for the expected sad dead finale by ending happily and playing with a ton of BL tropes. The leads have good chemistry, it's higher heat and the first time Taiwan starts to push that, and VERY DRAMATIC.

last i’m posting about this xoxo sorry about the watcher spam recently but i feel the need to put my 2 cents in since my opinion on this doesn’t align with the vocal majority on this site

gotta admit my first youtuber drama experience was a 0/10 not because of what the creators did but solely because of the insanity of the fandom. because…wow. i have never seen a group of people throw around demands and accusations of betrayal in such a dramatic way lol. maybe i’m in the minority here but i felt the majority of responses and criticism just were any lacking basis at all.

my first thoughts with the announcement were literally “oh good for them new streaming service, i won’t be going for it, but maybe after a few months i’ll consider paying for a 1-time sub to catch up on everything”. sure some disappointment i wouldn’t get regular updates but overall excited for the new content this pay structure would give them the flexibility to create.

maybe because i didn’t get into youtubers until the pandemic when watcher was already it’s own independent thing i don’t have that same (*cough cough* parasocial) level of connection, just really enjoy the videos they put out. maybe because i go through subscription-of-the-month stints of paying for a patreon or twitch or other creator channel and rotate what i watch, this didn’t feel outrageous to me. i hate the subscription world we live in so i go out of my way to never pay more than a strict budget limit per month because that’s my ability and that’s my mentality on this. i thought at best maybe i’d consider rotating this in when they put out more.

don’t like the idea of it? you don’t have to pay for it. can’t afford it? i understand the disappointment from this aspect but creators don’t actually owe you anything for free - even if it was free in the past. overall and for whatever reasoning you have: it wasn’t that deep.

if anything i am in a way thankful that they rescinded on their decision because that means me & others will continue to enjoy videos for free. but overall i’m disappointed that this means they’re sacrificing their own creative wants and financial needs of whatever they had planned. we won’t actually know the extent of what, if anything, this prevents them from creating because y’all wouldn’t even let them attempt to try this next phase out.

fans saying “well we don’t want high-budget content” well maybe they want to explore more than what they’re currently able to do? maybe they want to create more beyond their buzzfeed-format videos they know will rack in views from the nostalgia-obsessed side of the fans? i, too, personally love their humor and would just enjoy them chatting and being silly, but i do also think this holds them back. remember those hilarious self-made commercials from their most recent videos? that's probably just a glimpse of what new flavors of content they’re able to think up.

this whole fan response was just disappointing (and pretty scary ngl) to me, and i know saying that is like kicking a hornets nest but i really think if they continued with the plans from their original announcement it would have been ok. i actually think it would have been more than ok! but the response imploded so hard i’m sure we’ll never see them try something new again lol.

my personal thoughts are that if your opinion in any way revolved around something they “owe” to fans, feelings of “betrayal”, thinking they’re “sell outs” for wanting to transition to paid content - i think you really need to take a step back and reflect, and i mean that with zero malice. watcher is a business, not your friends, not “the boys”, not your guaranteed source of a specific type of content either. ultimately they made a business decision that they thought would help them grow that would have either succeeded or failed, that's it. for better or worse, we wont get to watch that play out.

i will continue my quiet enjoyment of their videos, and happily move on past what i frankly think was the most unnecessary internet drama i’ve seen in a minute lol. the takes overall were dumb but tame, i only blocked a handful of accounts for posting things i thought were totally out of line that i won't get into but i'm sure you've either seen or heard people discussing.

i didn't even get in to my hot takes lol like how this plays into the dangerous trend of the expectation of art to be free....and the overall devaluing of creatives and why AI is thriving in these areas...but ill defend that thesis another day lol. y'all aren't ready for that.

A/n: You're homesick, so they get your favourite food! This is an African/ Caribbean reader. Food appears in order for those who aren't familiar with, jollof rice, akara, efo rio and pounded yam and meat pattie! Not proofread

Price- simple man makes jollof rice, he's had it a thousand times at parties, at your house. Knows the flavours like the back of his hand. All it takes is a youtube video and the the whole house is smelling of stew and spices when you get home, you find him at the table waiting for you, "cooked a little something for you" as he kisses your cheek he says it as if it was no effort at all. Rice, chicken and plantain loving cooked in front of you. It warms your heart seeing the effort he made for you.

Ghost- he cant cook, beans on toast is the hight of his cooking. Racks his brains for meals you've made in the past. Akara! he watched you make that, it was simple beans, onions, water. Beans on toast, bean friter basically the same thing,he could do this. He's standing over the hob confused and annoyed watching the batter devolve into the oil. He hums when you stand next to him both of you looking confused at the oil pan in front of you". "what, what is this supposed to be?" "... nothing, come on, get your jacket on. " He's glad he had a backup, the shopping centre food court there was a small restaurant you talked about going to. The two of you were a sight. He leaned back in his chair legs wide, the bag of plantain chips in front of him still closed as you ate. He smiled under his mask it may not have been a lot but he's made you smile.

Kyle - he asks his mum, a friend of friend, apears a few days later with efo and pounded yam in hand. Plating it up the way he's seen at parties. He's vague about the origins of the food" wanted to surprise you babe," kissing your forehead when you come home, You sigh in relief seeing the food, the stress melt from your body when you see the table. Seeing you Happily hum away as you eat, he have to thank his mums friend for the food.

Downside to pounded yam or any kind of swallow is that it knocks out you after. You're both groggy, an arm wrapped across you as you stumble up the stairs. There's a smile on your face as he places down on the bed, the two of you peaceful sleep, wrapped around each other.

Soap-ohh, this is easy for him! He's off from the chair almost instantly, you're homesick, perfect opportunity, Caribbean take away it is. He eats there regularly, You think he's more excited about this than you, ordering more than enough food for you. You walk down the street, linking arms, takeaway in hand. He let's you talk all the way home about your island with bright eyes, his gaze soften. " you have to try cal's it's amazing. You'd love it soap!" "You gotta take me there, bonnie! you needed to be working. if your manager ever happened to look at the cameras, you would be reprimanded for sure. but, you couldn't help it.

you sat behind the register peering around a bookshelf to look at the coffee shop in a snug corner. the bookstore you worked at wasn't huge but when the local coffee shop proposed opening a small area in your store, your manager happily agreed.

it was small enough to only need 1-2 workers a day. today just happened to have 1 person working.

a smile crept on your lips as you thought of her name. she was the main barista at the small coffee shop, maybe even the manager? you didn't deal with the shop much but all you knew that was when ellie worked, you couldn't help but stare. she was kind enough to bring you a cup of coffee some days. when you were crazy busy and there were no tasks at the shop she even jumped in to help you with customers.

you would always tell her you were fine but she would wave you off, ringing up customers as if she originally worked at the bookstore.

she snuck into your heart with her small acts of kindness.

you tear your eyes away from her to scan the small store, seeing if any customers were in. to your surprise (and benefit) there wasn't.

it was time.

you hop off the small stool you were seated on and made your way over to ellie.

"slow day, huh?" you shove your hands in your apron as you approach her.

she laughs, nodding her head, "yes it is! feels like the shift is never gonna end. i don't think i've seen more than 4 people today." her sleeves were rolled up to reveal her forearm tattoo as she washed some spare dishes. that damn forearm tattoo always got you blushing.

you look out the window, "i thought since school was out today some kids would stop by."

ellie clicks her tongue, "kids don't read anymore. they are all about their ipads and... what's, what's that one youtuber called?"

you look back at her and shrug, "i have no clue. i don't keep up, too old." she looks like she's racking her brain to find the answer.

"mr. beast? i think that's who the kids are into. or is it someone else?" ellie was wondering out loud, scrubbing her last cup. you furrow your brows at the name.

you have never even heard of him before.

"i don't know him," ellie hums in acknowledgment, shaking her hands free from the water, "maybe we will get busy soon. only have about 2 hours before we close up."

ellie wipes her hands on a towel before leaning against the counter, eyes locking on yours, "maybe. we don't usually have many customers before we close, though." she looks in between you and the floor like something is bothering her.

"that's true." you finish out the conversation, settling in a sort of awkward silence. her eyes were darting back and forth while her bottom lip was tugged between her teeth, "well, i'll go tidy up my side of the store. bye bye!"

even if you wanted to sit and talk to ellie all day, you couldn't just completely abandon your job. you go to turn around but her saying 'wait!' pauses you in your tracks. you look at her with curious eyes.

"are you, uh, doin' anything tonight?" her hand rubs the back of her neck as she peers at you with a look in her eyes you can't quite place.

this was perfect.

you never thought ellie would be the one to initiate so this was a pleasant surprise. she always seemed sort of reserved so you figured you would have to be the one to shoot your shot.

you clasp your hands in front of you, a smile forming, "no, i'm actually free tonight."

ellie lets out a small breath of relief, "wanna go to the arcade? play some mortal kombat? if... if that's what your into, of course. we could definitely play something els-"

"that's perfect, ellie," she smiles at your reassurance, "meet you at the back doors after we get through closing?"

she gives a thumbs up, cringing slightly at her action, "sounds perfect!"

you wanted to tease her for her awkwardness but you couldn't do that to her. not yet at least.

Kaiju Week in Review (January 7-13, 2024)

Hard to talk about the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters finale without spoilers, so if you haven't watched it yet, skip ahead to the next item. No flashbacks this time (time dilation aside), just our surviving heroes finally all on the same page to solve a seemingly impossible problem. The momentous reunion between Lee and Keiko got the space it deserved, although I was a touch disappointed that the obvious budding romance between Cate and May got shortchanged. And of course we finally got our first kaiju fight of the series, with Godzilla dispatching the Ion Dragon in a quick but ferocious battle. Fun to see this version of the character take on a low-stakes, low-power challenger for a change. I am routinely frustrated by TV seasons ending on cliffhangers (some of which are then never resolved), but they managed to conclude this season's storyline while setting up the next one, should they have the chance to tell it. Good to have some payoff to the Apex episode earlier in the series. I'm wondering if the series is planning to pivot to Kong now. Since Godzilla: King of the Monsters still hasn't happened yet, the Big G still can't make any public appearances without breaking continuity, which is quite the writing complication.

@bog-o-bones has blessed us with an excellent feature-length video essay on the history of the kaiju genre. Even for a walking encyclopedia like me, it was fun to have it all laid out so cleanly—the way the three genre pillars of Godzilla, Gamera, and Ultraman rise and fall in popularity, never entirely in sync and consequently keeping us steadily entertained over the decades. So many narratives about the genre in print are decades out of date and/or act like barely anything past the sixties was worth making. This one's up-to-the-minute and gives the seismic influence of films like Cloverfield and Pacific Rim their due. I have my quibbles (last-minute re-records accidentally omitted GAMERA -Rebirth-; the original Mothra deserved more attention), but I acknowledge the amount of works covered here is staggering and every fan would tell this story a little bit differently. Highly recommended.

IDW's biggest Godzilla comic ever is coming in May, a one-shot anthology called Godzilla: 70th Anniversary. It'll have nine stories over 100 pages, with the writers including Joëlle Jones, Michael W. Conrad, Matt Frank, James Stokoe, Adam Gorham, and Dan DiDio. (Some of these folks will presumably be illustrating their comics as well.) The solicitation doesn't offer many plot hints, given that scope: "From the American Old West to modern Tokyo and beyond, this collection features stories of the King of the Monsters fighting with its allies like Mothra, against old enemies like the terrible Mechagodzilla, and reshaping the lives of all who fall in its path!" I'm surprised they're not waiting until November—hopefully it doesn't get delayed into November.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will now release in the U.S. two weeks early—March 29. It's taking the place of Bong Joon-ho's Mickey 17, which is now undated. I can hardly complain about being able to see it earlier, though the move comes with some risk, as it's now opening the week after Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.

SRS Cinema has opened preorders for their Yuzo the Biggest Battle in Tokyo Blu-ray. Or is it Yuzo: The Biggest Battle on Tokyo? That's what the product page says, but on the cover the title's unchanged. Oh, SRS. Anyway, bonus features are scant: just trailers and something called "A Brief Introduction To Ishii Yoshikazu."

Here's the teaser trailer for Volcanodon, a short film from Taiwan's Creator Union of Tokusatsu. They're aiming to have it uploaded to YouTube sometime this year, and I'll happily watch it. Obviously low-budget, but it's well-shot and it's nice to see a kaiju movie outside of Japan go all-in on practical effects.
