Itaewon class - sortighatchats
Tumblr media
This kdrama is just too good not to sort. See @sortinghatchats and @wisteria-lodge for explanation of the sorting system. Beware of spoilers.
Itaweon class is a revenge story at its core about an underdog who does what feels right, steps up for his morals—and loses everything as a consequence. But it's also very heart-warming, idealistic, with power of friendship and lots of comfort scenes.
Tumblr media
Seroy Pak is such a shining little lion. The whole story is basically built around him being so stubborn about his morals that he defies the big bad - the chairman of the ruling food company, his father's boss, the guy everyone bows down to. Instead of doing the smart thing, the survival thing, Seroy does the feel right thing—he fights back. At every. Damn. Step. Of. The. Way.
Many many characters note how stupid that is. How much his life would have been easier if he just bowed down, knelt, begged, apologised. Played by the rules. But Seroy never does, his morals and convictions always unscathed, even if the rest of his life gets freaking wrecked for it.
Seroy beats up the school bully even the teachers are afraid of, gets himself kicked out of high school, loses his father his job. And his dad says: I'm proud of you. That's a burned and broken lion right there. "I just want you to hold your head high and live confidently how I never managed." Geez, thanks for the advice.
The first two episodes are this inspiring backstory of this socially clumsy but very firmly set lion, who loses everything including his dad and dream job and nerves, gets imprisoned....by all means should be broken down. Except he comes out 2 years later with a 15 year plan how to get revenge on the impossibly powerful guy who did it to him. Cause he shouldn't be played with. Because he, Seroy, won't bow down to this monster, he should bow to him.
The way he can calmly and confidently go spew such unrealistic idealism makes people think he is mad...or scared or insanely inspired and loyal. Seroy's roaring lion gets people around him, loyal people who breathe for his dream, who do everything in his footsteps. His employees love and admire him. His arch enemy doesn't have a reason to fear him, yet can't stop getting pissed off by his mere existence.
That's the power Seroy has.
At the same time his method is a subtle, kind hard work. That's Seroy in a nutshell. When he currently isn't saving someone from injustice and refusing to bow down, he is...at work. Slow and steady. It's all in the people and trust. He can make it, be it 5, 10 or 15 years. His goals will be fulfilled and he will get enough money, people, right the wrongs. He will get his way through steady effort and honest work. Cheating never comes into question. Protection or using contacts...don't either. Seroy will suffer to abide the law just to not get any unfair cheats from anyone. He will rather take responsibility than the easy way out.
Tumblr media
This is both, heartwarming and awe-inspiring and incredibly frustrating to watch. Especially if you are his slightly sociopathic double snake manager Ji-so. This girl is a genius and as egotistical and self-seving as it gets. She talks with people cause they are rich or have something she wants. But she is also incredibly bored by the inevitable predictability of everyone around her...except Seroy. Seroy, whose crazy morals and kindness principles don't make sense. Seroy, who is walking around all proud lion when he has nothing, no advantages, no talent, no capable employees or strategies.
Seroy doesn't fight for himself, he has high goals, revenge plans in the making, helps people around and works all honestly. It doesn't make sense to young Ji-so and she gets completely obsessed. Then fascinated. And then falls head over heels in love with him.
From that point on, everything and everyone in Ji-so's life turns around her boss Seroy. He is the one she works for, protects, makes rich and famous. He is everything. Even when his logic and principles clash with practicality, even when Ji-so with her ruthless playful sneaky tactics would get his goal faster, she listens to him. She completely readjust her moral compass and methods so they align with his. She is his snake through and through.
Tumblr media
Funnily enough, O-Soo, Seroy's childhood friend and long term love interest is a snake too. She is only in it for herself. As an orphan, she learned to look out for her survival with all means necessary. If surviving means being quiet and submissive, so be it. If surviving and prospering means working for the guy who killed her father-figure and the dad of her best friend...so be it. There are many heart-breaking moments between her and Seroy, when she apologises to him that she has to do this. That she has to choose herself above him and everyone else's good, cause that's just how it is. She can't do it any other way. And she feels guilty for it because Seroy is her person. And in a very very round about logic, she is doing it for him, for her own secret 20 year old plan of revenge. But by doing the best for him she effectively kicks herself from her own group. She betrays him, spies on him, warns him about it, but he always reassures her it's fine, those are your morals, your convictions, I can understand this.
But she is doing it for him and for the group, except she can't be with them while she does it and ends up alone. That's why she spends the show absolutely miserable, hoping for attention and love she saboteges to pay back the debt nobody asked her to pay to the one person who had treated her right.
The biggest foil to Seroy's efforts and actions is his main enemy. The impossible to defeat the Chairman who ruins Seroy's life, because the little lion refuses to bow down. In a way this makes the chairman a lion as well. His goal, purpose and feel is the company. And his pride and conviction that he is the strongest and therefore should always be winning.
In the flashbacks it seems like he did it for his family, like he build the empire for them and cares about them, but in the end the Chairman cares about the image and about his pride and ego, not about the actual people he is protecting.
Even if Seroy and the Chairman show many parallels, from starting their companies with little to big goals and inspiring roaring lion cores, they differ mainly in the methods. Chairman is a sneaky underhanded snake where Seroy is a kind hard worker. Seroy can never forgive the intimidation, contacts, masks and everything the Chairman is willing to do to get his wins and wants. Where the Chairman corrupts, lies and blackmails, whatever works best for the situation, does Seroy choose to be honest, slow, do things through his own hands.
Yet Seroy gets fuled and inspired by the Chairman despite and maybe because of the hatedred. He only and finally loses his pride, when he realizes how much he cares about Ji-so (her showing her love through helping Seroy achieve his goals is the best way to get to a lion primary) that he is willing to kneel for her. That the Chairman would go as low as to threaten her life is the last drop for him. Seroy loses all his respect for him for this and never turns back. Even when he finally gets the Chairman on his knees in turn does he care half as much as he thought.
Tumblr media
I'm not all that sure about the rest of the side-characters. The transgender cook is mainly a badger secondary through her hard work ways and fellow younger ex-gangster's loyalty and inspiration through Seroy makes me guess me think snake primary. Maybe they are all snake primaries really, cause they make big stands for each other, driven by dreams, ambitions, self-gain in a very natural, unapologetic way.
Tumblr media
Very curious case is Kun-so, who stars out so shy and beat down. Everyone kept convicing him that as illegitimate second son of the Chairman, he had no right to want anything for himself that he just seemed like such a kind, shy, polite boy. When he fell in love with Jin-So and realized he was losing her to Seroy who he admired, he quit and tried to take over the Chairman's company by being his son and turning to his image.
It didn't work out, and not because it didn't feel right. That is not a factor for him. It just didn't prove effective. Seroy wins the fight against his father, so he is obviously the one in the right. Kun-so is lost in how much he wanted, in the unstoppable greed of desiring things for himself. Did he explode as a snake? Somehow he still stays sympathetic and likeable through all his moral switches and betrayals.
Maybe it's because of his badger secondary. The kid just needs to set a goal and an idol and then he succeed through doing the hard work. Doing his best to do what's asked of him, whatever that may be. You want me caring? Okay. You want me heartless? Okay too. Huh. The switching around of morals and personalities depending on what he decides now makes me think he might be a Bird primary. He is the one who doesn't know what he wants and feels lost, except knowing he won't be like his father. He is the one who sets his goal on taking over the company once Jin-so says that will win her over. And he simply accepts Seroy's reasons and explanations for everything, simply adapting them into his code. When Seroy says he is a kid and can forgive himself, then it must be true and Kun-so accepts it as part of his new truth.
O-Soo's methods seem super sneaky. She spies and and she stabs in the back...but she doesn't enjoy it and she isn't sneaky about it. She doesn't hide it, she even apologies and warns before doing it again. Her whole 15 years old plan worked even better than Seroy's and she did it with less people, from the inside, despite how incredibly deplorable it made her feel. Doesn't that make her a good candidate for Bird secondary? She made her plan and went with it. Preparations through all her positions, through all the years, from the inside the lion's den. Meticulous and detailed, to bring down the Chairman. Great bird. Snake Bird also fits her villainous vibes until the last episode.
Seroy - Lion / Badger
O-Soo - Snake / Bird
Jin So - Snake / Snake
Chairman - exploded Lion / Snake
Kun-so - Bird / Badger

Friday the thirteenth, January 2023
day drinking with a man whose mind you fell in love with in 2021, seeing him without the pedestal you put him on, laughing about jokes appropriate for a 10th grade back bench, seeing blurring back tattoos, and talking about creative processes. a hug so good, a hug so warm. not goodbye, just the starting of something long term and mutually beneficial. yes, when things are to be played out in decades, the first few years are just the starting phase. that's new for you, isn't it? to expect something to last this long, to want something to last.
he too, likes you for your mind. the things your brain can do for his business. it's this sort of capitalistic tie but with the sentiment of something that matters. is he an extraordinary man? should you bet your life on him and help him build his dreams like Jo Yi Seo did with Park Sae-Ro Yi in Itaewon Class? I don't know. I don't know how to make someone else's dreams mine. I don't know if I want to. but I will be rooting for him. I'll be rooting for me. no matter how I decide to live my life, I will support myself.

Itaewon Class: Webtoon & Drama
Tumblr media
I watched the drama adaptation in Netflix without knowing it was based on a webtoon. I loved the series for so many reasons but mainly it was the characters. This story gives center stage to characters that society outcasts:  Park Sea Ro Yi a dropout and ex-convict,  Lee Ho Jin victim of bullying at school, Jo Yi Seo a sociopath, Ma Hyun Yi a transgender, and Choi Seung Kwon an ex-convict and ex-gangster. The fact that the main characters are not the typical kind makes this story fresh and interesting. I won't repeat myself - if you want to know in detail what I think about the characters and the plot as presented in the Korean drama you can check my post Itaewon Class (Korean Drama).
Needless to say, when I learned this drama was based on a webtoon, I searched for it until I found it, but I found it in Korean and so I had to wait for a translation. A couple of months ago I found the webtoon translated to English in Tapas and I read the whole 79 episode long webtoon between yesterday and today. I couldn't put it down. I was so happy and excited to see that the Netflix series adaptation had been faithful to the essence of the characters and to the most important events in the webtoon. Don't get me wrong, the series did take its liberties and the major one was creating Tony Kim's character; but I think that its addition to the clan was enriching and daring. These characters break stereotypes and initiate difficult conversations in a very conservative culture and Tony Kim wasn't an exception. The adaptation also changed the scene where Park Sae Ro Yi realizes he is in love with Yi Seo but I like both scenes so I don't mind. The series showed us how they opened the second pub and took some things that in the webtoon were planned but never really executed and made them happen for plot development which I thought it was fine as well. I think that the screenwriter and the director made deliberate changes that didn't harm the story, but actually made it even more intense. . .
I am so happy that I got to read this amazing webtoon! I loved the story, the character development, and drawings. . . everything really. If you like the webtoon, watch the series. If you watched the series, read the webtoon. They are both so worth it!

 2020 (56th) BaekSang Arts Awards - June 5, 2020
Best New Actress (Kim Da-Mi)
Her bölüm ayrı ayrı söverek izledim.
Yani özetle, on numara beş yıldız diziydi. İlle vıcık vıcık aşk izlemek istiyorum diyen varsa önermem ama onun dışında herkese gözüm kapalı öneririm.

ITAEWON CLASS
Episode 1
I've already watched half of it and forgot to save my draft here so my thoughts are gone forever </3 BUT! I'll write a small recap. I'm currently on the scene where Sae Ro Yi (Park Seo Joon) is drinking with his dad.
I ABSOLUTELY ADORE HIS DAD. (I would die for you!!!) and I have a very bad feeling that he's going to die. Like something in my head is tingling, I hope I'm proven wrong because he's so sweet and so real and Sae Ro Yi literally bawled for him.
Anyway for now we have seen:
A random girl whose definitely the lead talk to a therapist about dying. Real.
Her therapist being a little too chill with all of this, maybe because she's not fazed by it or this is normal? (I'm a little concerned)
Flashback already. We are doomed as we find out this has been Sae Ro Yi's go to hairstyle since he was 17 !!!
Tumblr media
Annoying teacher things happen. A girl has a crush on him, and reveals it, she is stronger than me and is my inspiration moving forward. Gets rejected like rudely like he doesn't even say no or anything just walks past her LMAO?
Bumps into this girl being rude and she's just rude to him again. They meet at an orphanage where his dad works and she meets him again, does NOT apologize for her rude ass behaviour (like babe he could've failed his exam and you're weirdly rude) continues being rude. He ends up sitting next to her in school, even though he misses his bus to avoid being with her at the bus stop I guess. Messes with a bully (#REAL) and gets punished for it.
Honestly, up until then I was just mildly annoyed by everyone. Like I do not like or care about any of you but him breaking down at the thought of his dad resigning and his dad actually sticking by his son warmed my heart.
Okay, now back to regular programming.
Tumblr media
Chug it uncle, you deserve everything. <3
I guess when you've had a hard successful day, or a day has left an impression on you, your soju tastes sweet.
WHY IS HIS CRYING FACE SO REAL I AM GOING TO CRY. I do not care for him, but I see and he sees what his dad has done for him and our hearts are collectively breaking.
NOT me relating this hard to a character but my dad is exactly like this. Not only will he have our backs but has these alternative solutions ready as if it doesn't matter that a crisis has befallen us because of me 5 seconds ago. I take my words back, I will not be okay if his dad dies.
Park Seo Joon is an excellent crier and he has barely cried.
Now, why is this creepy rich boy back again?
Tumblr media
At least, our girl with the bob was rude to him. (I was about to call her our bitch with the bob {said endearingly} but then realised it's too early to get a feel on her and to be fair she has reasons to be mad at the world)
Now the dad's here to be a dad again. MY HEART HIS SMILE WAS SO BRIGHT. HE IS THE EMBODIMENT OF SUN Y'ALL.
No he really is the sun because I promise you, no one but you can look at her and call her a magnificent person lmaooo.
Tumblr media
Awww I take it back, she loves him. He paid for her tuition he is literally insane like he is the real sun!!!
Do Bong Soon's dad and the bully's dad in this show is scaring me.
Did he just call my sunshine a dog ?!?!?!? SOMEONE HOLD ME BACK I AM GOING TO PUNCH THIS BITCH INSIDE THE SCREEN
Awwww he took her bag. That's such a mom move. (said lovingly because I don't know how to describe this yet) She took it back lmao.
They're running to some random song but all I hear now when someone runs is Run Bulletproof Run yeah you gotta RUN!
SHE MADE IT ON TIME AND CAN STAND??? Legs of steel baby!
LMAO, I just found her name. Look at her cutely reminiscing about him saying all the best. I get it girl!
HE WAITED.
AWWWW (I kinda want justice for my chocolate girl but hey progress is progress)
His smile is adowableeee. But that hair still takes me out HELP. He keeps rubbing it when he's nervous or happy and it takes me out LMAO. 💀
The way he stopped smiling as soon as she brought up his expulsion. They are terrible at small talk.
AAAH HIM CUTELY ASKING AND GIVING HIS NUMBER AND DILLY DALLYING (is that a thing? he's just flailing his arms adorablY!!!)
HE ALREADY HAS A CRUSH ON HER 💀
Look at that puppy face when she tells him not to like her.
The way she ran to take her number back. I like her.
AWWWWWW. He called her cool and pretty. HE"S SOOOO
Babes the cute montage is scaring me. Hold my hand....
WHY DID I HAVE TO SEE THAT UP CLOSE DO YOU HATE ME ?!? LIKE DO YOU ACTUALLY HATE ME>
IS DO BONG SOON"S DAD AFTER THIS?
This hurts my heart :(
WAIT IS SHE GOING TO SEE THE 777 CAR BC I THINK HE IS AFTER THIS>
RAMEN NOODLE, I KNEW YOU WERE AFTER THIS>
Tumblr media
He is about to do something real stupid. Even though I'm all for Ramen Noodle head getting punched because you hit someone and couldn't dial the ambulance, dumb ass.
GIRL STOP HIM
The elevator door was open for so long, stop HIM
oh no

Reseña de Itaewon Class (2020)
Tumblr media
Título: Bride of The Century / 이태원 클라쓰 / Itaewon Keullasseu
Género: Drama, Romance, Amistad
Episodios: 16
Cadena: jTBC
Rate: ★★★★★
Inspirador, impactante, adictivo, reflexivo, entretenido, motivador.
Absolutamente fascinantes canciones.
★★★★★
OST: 5 estrellas
Actuación: 5 estrellas
Personajes: 5 estrellas
Historia: 5 estrellas
Cinematografía: 5 estrellas
Química: 5 estrellas

Itaewon Class
Tumblr media
I love how this show had 2 strong female leads instead of the typical two strong male leads. And by strong I mean they were both solid characters and had their own development and redemption and honestly until the very end if wasn’t quite sure which one was the first female lead and which was the second (though I was rooting for Yi Seo from the very beginning).
Park Sae Ro Yi. How can I articulate what I feel about him? Other than he is now my top 3 kdrama male leads right up there with Captain Yoo Shi Jin from Descendants of the Sun and Ryan Gold from Her Private Life. I am going to write a whole list of why later!
Tumblr media
Edit/gif by @sclcncsblog
I love how the newer kdramas are really talking about issues that matter. In Her Private Life they navigate homosexuality so very well with Ryan Gold’s view of it. In Itaewon Class Hyun-yi being trans was one of my highlights.
Then with Toni and racism and with Choi Seung-kwon being from the background he is thinking is life is done for but how seeing Sae Ro Yi’s outlook on life and self-worth really turning his life around - oh my gosh.
I like how by the end of it Park Sae Ro Yi truly becomes a businessman while keeping his values and dignity in place. How he doesn’t treat Chairman Jang in a mean or harsh way - rather makes him soft tofu stew and talks politely - but he doesn’t let his weeping and pleading change his mind about the takeover since that’s a business decision.
Also I mean can we just acknowledge how the first actual kiss in this kdrama is right at the end of it? And how it could - like most other kdramas- make us feel so much without having to have intense kiss/sex scenes. I mean that is true art.
I love how Sae Ro Yi takes his time to realise and confess his feelings for Yi Seo. And when he finally tells her - that intensity, that sincerity, that sureness - you can never doubt a man like Sae Ro Yi.

Yi Seo was, of course, my favourite character - right after Sae Ro Yi. She is strong, a little crazy but pure-hearted and a perfect match for Sae Ro Yi. She isn’t weak. She isn’t a coward. Yes, she can be a little too harsh but in the moments that matter, she always rises up to the occasion. Whether for Hyuni-yi or Toni. Her final conversation with Geun Soo where she apologises to him and acknowledges his feelings and how she’s treated them - that was her redemption.

I really didn’t like Soo Ah. I get that her background wasn’t privileged and that she was at a disadvantage but still...she was just no match for Sae Ro Yi. The kind of man he is, he needs a woman like Yi Seo rather than Soo Ah. But of course, by the end by being the whistler blower and not asking Sae Ro Yi for anything but just to be happy...she redeemed herself. And I love her ending too - starting her own cafe, looking so happy and elegant and pretty and maybe falling for hew new chef (Park Bo Gum!)? I was genuinely happy for her.

You know what I really liked about Itaewon Class? The fact that Sae Ro Yi wasn’t above it all. The fact that he let revenge fuel him. And in the end, he got what he wanted but he also admitted that it didn’t make him feel happy and that it had been really fucking tough living life that way. I like how irrespective of how perfect he was, he had his flaw because it’s honestly only natural to have such flaws. Him kneeling down before Chairman Chang to save Yi Seo - I love how he didn’t even have to think about it for a second and how easily it came to him.
The show truly was about people. And trust. And bonds. Lee Ho-Jin becoming Sae Ro Yi’s friend and then financial manager - loved that. Toni’s grandmom being the badass investor - loved that. I love how all the characters in the show are SO majorly flawed but in the end, mostly good at heart and have their own special/unique set of strengths. In the end, the key to a person’s support, trust, respect and love is sincerity. It really is that simple.
And the fact that someone can be important to you but not all the time. That’s something Yi Seo understood and Soo Ah didn’t. Like when shit went wrong with the 10 billion investment and Soo Ah told Sae Ro Yi to leave everything and come to her and they could be happy...how could she! Despite knowing, despite actually being right there when Sae Ro Yi’s life fell to pieces back in school. That, along with 100 other reasons is why Yi Seo and Sae Ro Yi always made sense.

But the point isn’t that. The point is that everyone has their priorities and people - no matter how much you care about them - they can’t be your constant priority. Hence, you have to be strong enough to be there for yourself.
In the end, all I can say is...
How did it taste?

It was SWEET.
