Versions
Why does aging feel so weird? I'm going to be 21 soon, and parts of me still feel 18, 16, 12, and 5. Like they all exist within me and pop up at different times. I feel 5 when I'm playing tag or hide-and-seek with my nieces. I feel 12 when I see a horse, and my mind transports me back to when I used to take horseback riding lessons. I feel 16 when I go to drive someplace new, shaky but brave. I feel 18 until I interact with my cousin and remember that I am so very not 18.
I think these different versions of us always exist. As if we're a book, and each year is a chapter. Some long, some short, some seemingly never-ending, yet they all come together to create us. We carry the past chapters into the current one because they are what's responsible for making us tick. I carry 12 year old me around because she still lives within me, and she shows herself in how I love, because I learned of grief too soon. I carry 18 year old me in the way I dream, because she always thought her future would be so bright—optimistically delusional that no matter what, things would work out alright.
I am about to be carrying 20 different versions of myself around, and each year I will be fortunate enough to carry another. Growth is a beautiful thing, isn't it?
Until next time,
A refreshingly peaceful and optimistic Bean 🌱

"You might think that because you’ve had COVID-19 and lived through it that repeat infections will impact you similarly, but “reinfections aren't harmless. As cases continue to rise and more variants arrive on the scene, infectious-disease experts are warning that repeat infections could have cumulative, lasting effects.”
...If you want to maintain your current level of health and avoid potential damage to your body & organs (up to and including your brain & your heart) and/or want to live as long as possible, taking precautions to prevent COVID-19 infections is crucial."

June 2025
While walking through the botanical garden earlier this month, I stumbled upon these white umbrella-like flower heads — the inflorescences of Sosnowski’s hogweed (lat. Heracléum sosnówskyi).
I’m sure many of my fellow countrymen are familiar with it, but I’ll tell you about it anyway. It’s a perennial herbaceous plant — and a poisonous one. Its sap contains furanocoumarins, which make the skin highly sensitive to ultraviolet light. If the sap touches your skin, it can cause severe burns with blisters that take a very long time to heal. Its pollen, if inhaled, often causes irritation and even a vomiting reflex.
Hogweed spreads rapidly, taking over not only fields but also forests. And dealing with it is extremely difficult. Properly clearing the land of it can take five years or more — especially if done carefully, without harming the soil or local ecosystems.
As a rule, I don’t feel comfortable making loud declarations about the harm of certain plants or animals — to me, they are already at a disadvantage compared to humans, and the best thing we can do is not to harm them or their habitats. But in my homeland, entire hectares are overgrown with hogweed. These thickets are harmful not only to people but also to wild animals. And this situation is entirely man-made — the result of flawed agricultural programs from the last century.
It’s good to see that efforts are now being made to correct the consequences. For example, authorities are monitoring areas where the plant spreads, enforcing control measures, and running programs to support landowners and tenants, including financial compensation for the work done. Still, it seems that these efforts aren’t enough — at least not yet.
I really hope that someday the affected fields and forests will become safe again — for both people and animals.
(Heracléum sosnówskyi).
