This song is the one for the epic animatic in my head as Esperanza, as a faun/present times, uncovers what the fuck went down that caused her death and the vanishment of the other Valkyries. her mind was fogged up for a long time, and she has to go around and start figuring out herself what happened, while faced with a lot of physical setbacks, and the answer she finds is not the one she wanted!! i like thinking of this song alternating between her perspective singing to the perpetrator, an old friend of hers, someone she trusted very much even if they were not extremely close, and then herself, regretting she couldn't have done more for her Valkyrie siblings, for her fallen friend Marusea, and for herself!

Super curious, what do you mean by genetic deterioration? Why does that happen if in theory you are breeding with the same genetics? What makes generation 9 different from generation 15? How do you or the people to initially discovered it know when that to outbreed? Are they more likely to be ill/have physical issues after so many generations?

"deterioration" is a bit of a misnomer or maybe just not meant the way you're probably thinking. It's less that dna is "breaking down" (it's not. Well it's probably not, but we're not talking about cloning species), and more "diversity is deteriorating."

The thing is, there's no way to know for sure you've removed EVERY "bad" gene, and some bad effects are either mild enough not to be a problem in an otherwise healthy bird, or only a problem if there's not enough or the right other genes to prevent it from being a problem. And without removing all of them, eventually the population of inbred animals will lose enough genetic diversity that genetic drift can cause a deleterious gene with a weaker phenotype (ie, a non-lethal phenotype but still not a good one) to become fixed in a population with no (or so little as to virtually be no) diversity left to breed away from it, and while 1 things might not be a problem, if it's compounded with other things, it can be. The length of time this kind of thing takes can vary. Maybe you won't catch it until generation 15 or 100. Or, maybe you'll get lucky and happen into a perfect line with no bad genetic variations left- and then random mutation will get your ass and you still don't have enough genetic variety left to fix it. Or, enough homozygousity in things you may not necessarily see in the phenotype outright can start to cause a loss of fertility you can't really get back in a home breeding operation- partly because you generally can't know which gene is the problem or can't know which animals have it and which don't until it's a problem, which is made worse by the smaller and smaller groups of offspring to choose from, and the continuance of genetic drift.

So, yeah, if you had a 100% perfectly healthy bloodline with NO deleterious genes at all AND that line never ever had a deleterious de novo mutation pop up (and no DNA damage occurred in gametes or anything) in theory you could inbreed forever without a problem. But in practice, no one has that line. There's always something, and it WILL eventually rear its head, it's just a matter of how long you can maintain some/enough diversity to avoid it, if it's not obvious enough to cull out at the start or self limiting enough to kill off any carriers.

As for how you tell when to outcross- it's kind of subjective. When you notice less vigor, health problems that seem persistent, fertility problems, growth problems, etc, it's probably time for an outcross if you have been breeding a line to itself for a while. There's not a set "when" and it would vary hugely between species. When you talk to some more practical rodent breeders, they'll say you can go 100+ generations with a healthy line of mice. A horse breeder would perish at the thought of that for a horse because they're already having to do genetic tests to check that they're not doubling up on Shit That Will Kill Or Maim Offspring because there is no healthy line. Quail tolerate inbreeding more than horses. Probably worse than mice there are research mice from lines that have been going longer than I've been alive and they're fine despite being genetically identical. Generation 9 isn't different from 15 unless there's a de novo mutation, which they probably cull out anyway because they CAN do genetic testing.

So it's not that there's some hard line of "this animal WILL show x issues after this set number of generations" it's more "you can only roll the dice so many times before you lose." If you slowly make every number on the roulette wheel the same, you're going to hit it eventually. Even if you do manage to do everything right, you can't prevent new mutations from popping up. The longer you go without adding more numbers to the wheel so to speak, the higher the chance of hitting the wrong genetic lottery result.

I'm not gonna be talking about dragon age fandom or news etc. as a rule, but I will say that the fact people are fully planning on leaving the fandom because there won't be any more games is absolutely baffling to me

There are so many closed canon fandoms that are still going years and years later!! You don't need an alive franchise to create artworks for a fandom, or even to enjoy a game or show or whatever it is. It's giving me vibes of people who can't get into a ship unless it's gonna be canon - we don't need permission from the creators to interact in a transformative way with a thing!!!

RAHHH. okay okay okay OKAY okay okay. im gonna really try to keep this brief.

Baaree is the princess of the Turquoise Springs kingdom, a strong and prosperous kingdom ruined by her mother King Josephine ( https://toyhou.se/22099078.josephine ) Baaree may be the princess, but since she doesn't hold a royal fate card, it is highly unlikely she will ever be a queen or king herself. This doesn't bother her much, she knows she still has a job to do. she was incredibly dedicated to her position and was raised with the upmost poise, proper etiquette and learned to mirror perfect social skills. She studied law and agriculture and meteorology and mathematics and literature and communications, she tried to be the perfect daughter for her mother to be proud of despite her lack of royal fate, and prided herself on her intelligence and elegance and status.

That all went down the drain quickly when Baaree crept into her mother's room and attempted to murder King Josephine in their sleep. It came as a total shock to everyone, even Baaree, and the exact reasons as to why she did this are not well known. There was a steady build-up until this event, but not even Baaree truly noticed it coming. Baaree managed to escape the castle and arrest, heading out into the desert in a frenzy, terrified and confused and disgusted with herself.

Kelleher is a coyote shifter who lives out in the desert of Calcite Valley! Using the pelt on her back, which can come off but will NOT come off, she can shift into a natural looking coyote. She is a bit like a selkie, if a selkie was a dog. If she were separated from her pelt, there would be consequences.

Much of her past is unknown, but she is very well-known now as a troublemaker and thief. She wanders around the edges of towns, often pushed away from the citizens because they don't want to lose a chicken or two. She finds this behavior hilarious. Kelleher revels in her position as a wild animal, and allows herself to be treated like one. She is very boisterous, clever, and quick on her feet, but also reserved and independent. Sure, the isolation can worm its way into her brain, the looks of annoyance or fear when she slinks by full-shift stick to her skin, but Kelleher loves being free. Perhaps a dog could be loved by another and find warmth to rest by, but a coyote is not leashed. Kelleher knows she is unlovable and not like everyone else, but she has to be okay with that.

Kelleher finds great amusement by the new girl in the desert. Baaree is staying with a dragon and his daughters, but Kelleher sees her wandering around, clearly unaware she's in wild territory. Baaree is everything Kelleher is not- she is terrified of damaging her clothes, she's prancing around like she's scared the ground is gonna get its icky dirt all over her, she's complaining about the heat and misstepping so clumsy she's a second away from stepping on a cactus. Kelleher laughs at her, and Baaree snaps back..i gotta stop going on and on. im not gonna go into this much more but can you just pretend you read this whole thing about how theyre wonderful friends now . the weirdos

basically. Baaree thinks of herself as monster. Kelleher thinks of herself as a beast. Could a monster and a beast be best friends!? they run around the desert together. literally, run. they climb around and play outside and Kelleher finally has someone to race and Baaree gets all her anger and fear she's been keeping inside since she was small and since the attack on her mother that she still hasn't dealt with. because what the FUCK was that (I know.) Kelleher teaches Baaree to play in the dirt and swim in the creeks, and Baaree gives Kelleher head-pats and a place to rest without keeping her caged. they have a bit of a snarky rivals dynamic they argue and fight but they're smiling and prancing around. couldn't be me, but they love it

Their song "HUNTER" is all about the two of them finding a weird comfort in all the parts they hate about themselves in the other. Learning to love themselves for their weird brains and selves…. "For you were lonely, you were like me Like some outside force had sent me If I was easy to kill, you would have done it already" are you talking about yourself or are you talking about her. girl.

I cannot possibly tell you how much I'm looking forward to all the quail posts. FLUFFY CHEEPING BABIES FROM PRETTY EGGS and REALLY AWESOME LIVESTOCK BREEDING PROGRESS are a venn diagram and I'm sure I'm not the only one vibrating in the middle for the many many progress reports and pictures we hope to see.
