The problem with Nightshade with regard to tumblr potentially selling us out to AI is that you can't protect any un-Nightshaded work that has already been reblogged from your OP. That stuff's out there, and you're not going to be able to track it all down and deal with it retroactively.

However.

Nightshade your old stuff anyway and repost it so that any future reblogs are poisoned, but especially Nightshade anything new before posting it. That way all the reblogs of your new work will be poisoned from the start.

Nightshade

Guys, this is really easy. I just ran my first render on Nightshade, and it's very simple to use.

What is Nightshade?

It's software to "poison" the AI image-"generating" models which scrape your art without permission. It works by telling the AI software that this car is really a cow, or something similarly improbable, so that someone using that scraped art to "generate" a car will get a cow instead. This makes stealing art dangerous and costly and ineffective.

Thieving tech-bro: "That's so mean! They're poisoning our data!"

Hey, you know the absolutely guaranteed way to make sure you don't eat brownies full of laxatives? Don't steal brownies out of someone else's lunch in the break room fridge. This will only poison data that's stolen. Be ethical, be unaffected.

How To Use Nightshade

First, you can choose how intense to make the poison. :D It does increase render time, but that's okay, we know wars aren't won in a moment.

You can specify a tag for your primary image content ("fire," "rabbit," "forest," etc.) to establish content for the scrapers, and it reminds you to use this tag in the alt text and description, and in the post, for maximum impact.

Nightshade takes a while to download and then again to update libraries on first open, but that's a one-time thing. And then it takes a while to render, but again, we are here to preserve art and save the internet, so I can wait a bit to post.

And the output quality is good! Allegedly there are some image effects, but I'm not good enough to spot the difference when I have the before and after together.

Tips:

The guide says to run Nightshade last, after resizing, watermarking, etc. This will be most effective.

Do Nightshade before Glaze, if you choose to do both.

Render in PNG for best results but it's okay to convert to JPG after.

Remember to use your content tag in alt test, description, and your post! This is exactly where you'd be putting accessibility text anyway, so it's good practice with or without Nightshade.

If you want an AI to spit out a story for you, that's on you. But I did not spend days and weeks plotting, writing and rewriting and going over a fic ten times for you to threaten to put it onto an AI for a quick update.

I work. I am a nurse. I also have a family and friends, and have many other hobbies. Many writers can give you fics on the daily, but I can't. I've never done it and I won't start now. If you want daily updates find another author for you or write yourself.

I write slow, I don't have much time for it. I also have mental and physical issues. I doubt everything I write as English is a self taught language for me. And I've stopped enjoying a series or no longer vibe with it I won't write it because I won't force myself to post some half assed shit that will disappoint others and myself

Feeding fics to AIs is what drives authors away from writing and out of their blogs. Comments like these won't make us update faster it'll only make us wanna quit

Please remember that you should not be buying or selling bound fanfiction!!! It’s fine if you want to bind a fic yourself, for personal use (it’s still a nice idea to ask the author for permission) but binding fics with intent to sell is not okay and is illegal.

A lot of my followers/mutuals and myself included have been in the Harry Potter fandom for quite a while and it’s heartbreaking to see members of the community blatantly go against authors wishes. Please respect them and everyone else in the community, otherwise I wouldn’t be surprised if more fics get pulled.

If you come across sellers on places like Etsy please message/ report them!!!!

Harassing Content/Fanwork Creators

hiya, serious post time.

so i've been noticing some serious harassment towards people who make content or create fanwork. i've been wanting to stay something for a while but i'm not really good at this stuff so i was holding back,, i have decided not to do that any longer.

the lack of empathy or awareness people seem to have when interacting with content creators is kinda appalling tbh?? like i've seen people comparing people's art (telling person A they should do smth more like person B as if there's a more correct way to do it), putting people's ocs in situations the artist has stated they're uncomfortable with, trying to rush artists, or just outright disregarding an artist's boundaries.

the grossest part of this to me is that it seems people grow more obsessed w something when an artist says "this will never happen/please don't do this". i'm not going to tag people bacause i don't want to annoy anybody but as an example: i've seen an a fanwork creator repeatedly state that their oc will not have children of any kind and they're not comfortable with her being put in positions where she's watching over children in any capacity, and rather than accepting this, people try to find ways around it, question it, or outright ignore it.

i don't care if you didn't mean to be rude or if you were genuinely asking. if someone says "DON'T DO THIS WITH MY CHARACTER", don't fucking do it. it's so disgustingly disrespectful among other things (that i can't put into words bc i will just rant for several paragraphs gbhdf).

you wanna draw kids? make your own oc and draw their kids. stop trying to push that on other people.

also about rushing artists: art is fucking hard. people have lives outside of content creation, and even if they didn't, you still have to handle mental health, burnout, etc. on top of it. don't ask an artist "hey when is x coming out?" especially if they're fairly active?? like wtf have some fucking empathy.

to artists, content creators, and fanwork creators: you do not have to put up with ANYONE'S bullshit. your wellbeing and happiness is important. lay out your boundaries and if people disregard them, block them. people have shit to say about it? block them. you are not evil for wanting to be respected, especially over simple stuff, and being blocked is not the end of the world. people will survive and move on, and if they don't, maybe it'll teach them a much needed lesson.

If a movie is made using this technology and you hear about it, don’t buy tickets. Yes even if it’s that one. No exceptions.

If a song or youtube video uses this technology, no not like it, do not share it, do not watch it or save it or listen to it. Yes even that one. No exceptions.

If you have any shred of respect or empathy for people who are having their passions and livelihoods spat on, for the countless people who *will* become victims of deepfake media and identity theft, for literally every single person who will be affected negatively by this bullshit, than do not engage with ai art bullshit.

Do not use AI of Characters Voices / Voice Actors

Most VAs have asked not to do this, it steals their voice & work. People put that in the machine without the VAs consent.

Idc if you use it for "just a meme", a boundary is a boundary.

"But I want it to be vouce acted :(" - there are plenty of hobby VAs who will do imitations of characters for free. Contact them. Ask them. They love doing that kinda stuff! Plus you're supporting someone's work and passion that way, instead of stealing someone's voice!!

Step one: click on pancake icon for menu.

Step two: Click on view blog. (Do not just click on blog)

Step three: click on blog settings

Step four: Scroll all the way down to visibility. Click on it. Then click opt-out of third party sharing.

AI isn't ok. Opting out of this can't prevent all of your work from being used in AI training but it can help. You deserve to not have your work stolen and so do others. AI is stolen work. Don't support it.

For Artists, Going Into 2024...

My beloveds, I know times are amazingly atrocious for us all right now. The world is on fire, everything is terrible, and we're all having one helluva time trying to both make art (and that includes all of the arts...writing, music, performance, etc., not just the paint and ink based ones) and make a living, social media sites are being destroyed by uber-rich pissbabies, tech bros stealing shit, etc.

I can't offer much advice about that. It's a shitty situation all around. However. There is one thing I can tell you. Every fucking time some entitled douchebag starts being a little shit about "Why aren't y'all making things like this anymore" and posting images of Michaelango or Da Vinci's paintings or sculptures, I want you to change your response from despair and desperately trying to explain to them about how they had a (single) wealthy patron to POSTING LINKS TO YOUR PATREON OR KO-FI OR COMMISSIONS PAGES AND TELLING THEM THAT IF THEY WANT THAT SHIT HERE'S HOW THEY CAN MAKE IT SO THAT ARTISTS CAN GET BACK TO MAKING THOSE HUGE, GRAND PROJECTS BECAUSE THAT'S LITERALLY WHAT THEY ARE FOR. IF THEY WON'T CONTRIBUTE, TELL THEM TO SHUT THE FUCK UP OR PICK UP A BRUSH/PEN/CHISEL THEMSELVES.

No more coddling them. They want to complain, they have to pay the toll with real, actual money to you for the privilege of wasting everyone's time. No more wishing that it was The Good Old Days When An Artist Could Be Supported By A Single Wealthy Patron when, to be blunt, that was gatekept to hell and back and not as much fun as folks want to think it was for the rare few who got lucky enough to get a patron. For real, Patreon and Ko-fi are literally the thing you're wishing for, without the gatekeeping, because it removes the need for a single patron. They exist so that a large pool of people can chip in a couple of bucks to support an artist so that the artist can get to work. USE THE TOOLS FOR WHAT THEY'RE DESIGNED FOR, PLEASE. Relatedly, if someone starts the "you know what you should draw/paint/write..." thing, hit them with a commissions request link. They want you to make something specific, that's commission work.

Get comfortable with not tolerating that shit. We're artists. Our JOB is culture. Start shifting the culture to respecting artists by demanding that you and your time be respected. Link your crowdsourced patronage sites early and often, my friends. Go forth, beloveds, and create a world that respects us.

I am making this in my free time because I'm enjoying this + for You. I'm not gonna complain but one of my pics can took me 3-4 hrs. Sometimes even more.

I love when I see soooooooooo many messages that you like them. It gets me going! But theres this dark side: there are ppl who will edit out my name and act like it's theirs art. And when I see comments of people who look for better quality, there are always anwsers like "I don't know who is the author - I just found it on twitter lol".
