Just a thought in passing: why aren't we using this One Cheap Trick on Tumblr to protect each other from casual spoilers?

And by the One Cheap Trick I mean ROT-13.

This goes back to the long-ago newsgroup days. It's a simple "Caesar cipher." It used to be a commonplace on forums and message boards, used when you wanted to quickly and easily obscure an answer or hide a dirty joke.

You'd either type your text-to-be-hidden into a converter and cut-and-paste the result where you wanted, or else you'd just highlight the text and the system would turn it into ciphered text for you. Then all the people who wanted to read it needed to do was purposely highlight the ROT-13'd text, and the original would be revealed. (Or they'd paste it into their own back-converter if they needed to.)

On a whim, I just now used it in an answer in the questions here (because I didn't want to visibly give away a punchline, and there’s no way to put a cut in an answer). Just went to ROT-13.com and typed my text, then pasted it where it was needed. (And tagged it [ROT-13] so my correspondent would know what it was. Easy peasy.)

Why should we not start using it here? It's handy and simple, for those who for some reason don't feel like adding cuts in posts, and would be a courtesy to those who don't want to see spoilers for something. But it would also allow the text in question to sit there right on the page in plain view, and would put the burden of seeing or not-seeing on those who want to see or not see.

Adding here: I'd choose to protect Big Spoiler Detail or similar high-tension material using methods already built into the system here.

...But anyway, I'm going to start using it now and then when circumstances seem to call for it. It makes sense to me, for some uses. So y'all come with me if you like. (Or laugh at me as an Old. That's okay too.) :)

“Hungry.”

Q: Do you feel anything when gaining a new host?

“A new set of eyes. A new set of limbs. A new body to move. Satisfaction.”

“It is of no interest to you.”

“Why would we do that? They will become one with us eventually.”

Q: What would happen if your vessels went super?
