If id been the writer of apothecary diaries I would have come up with a different reason to kick Maomao out of the palace. In fact I wouldn't have had Jinshi kick Maomao from the palace at all. I would have let her term end and Jinshi desperately thinking about how he could offer her a job. Or asking her boss to ask her to stay. Whether she'd want that. And Maomao thinking: damn I kinda love being a taster EVEN THOUGH BEING HERE HAS PUT MY LIFE ON THE LINE IN MANY DIFFERENT WAYS. but I do want to see my dad again, BECAUSE HE SHOULDNT WORK IN THE FIELDS ALONE, and my sex worker sisters, who takes care of them now, now that their apothecary is gone? And she goes back. BECAUSE she is written up until this point as a caring person who is in solidarity with her fellow commoners. And Jinshi has set like three plans in motion to find out what she wants and to give her a place and to convince her to stay and. Then she just tells him goodbye, telling him why she's leaving (Jinshi realises her relatively poor circumstances keep her from him). And he realises he can't keep her against her will, she has people she cares about out there. He gets very depressed.

AND THEN, something happens that really puts Maomao in debt. NOT to her grandma figure trying to sell her into sex work as though its nothing. Some criminal and rich guy. Some brothel landlord, to contrast baba's verdigris palace and introduce some competition that would explain their money hunger. Maybe she gets called in and 'the merchandise' DOESNT survive, and she gets blamed and rung up for it. Or rather her dad, who's pushed to sell her. And Jinshi doesn't know that his job offer would be of great use now. She's getting threatened, Baba gives her a courtesan job to try and stave off her 'creditor'. Goushan finds out and arranges a meeting at an event along the lines in the show.

This maintains tension because it maintains the duress that Maomao is under in a believable way, and even increases the dubiousness of a relationship between a commoner and a noble. Maomao is now 'his', because she has no better choice. This also maintains the theme of the palace being so much like the brothel district. This would develop his class consciousness further and would prompt his desire to give Maomao intellectual status by making her do the exams, so he can balance and justify this new dynamic in several ways (outwardly, and inwardly). Also this money would go to her DAD, so that he really doesn't have to work his old bones IN THE FIELDS anymore.

Script Edits #1

This was an old prompt. A general idea I wrote down long ago - the scene (camera movement, etc), and I just added the dialogue now while making the edit. The dialogue is modeled after a certain ship, and the description was also modified a bit as I was making the edit. Originally it was a bit different, but general idea remained the same. Since the page looked so empty with just the scene description, so I decide to add some lines, too... And though I’m sure similar scenes have been shown in many shows, and this is nothing new/original, I still made this edit...

Editing LRL (The rough cut and beyond)

Eva provided me with a list from  Rabiger and Hurbis Cherrier as to how the process of editing should be ordered:

Processing and transforming film to video (only when using celluloid)Transferring, logging, organizing and syncing footageReviewing and evaluating footageInputting comments and marking up the editing scriptEditing and reviewing a first assemblyEditing picture and primary soundEvolving rough cut to final cutPicture lockGathering sound elements (narration, foley, adr, score, pre-recorded effects/ambience/music)Constructing multi-track dialogueSound mixAdding titledColour correctionMastering the final programDuplication and multi-format distribution  

I made alterations to this process where I needed to as I wanted my rough cut to give the most complete impression of the final piece I could achieve to people I would show it to.

I began by deciding on the clips I intended to use. I personally prioritized clips in which lines were the most clear and accurate and the performance was the most authentic. This way the story would be the most clear.  I synced these clips and preceded to select my intended sound and video inserts. Reisz suggests montage is most effectively used where it deliberately demands the audience view the story as artificially. Due to our issues on the first shoot day there would have to be a degree of artificiality inserted into the story so this became an optertunity to use montages that emphasized the themes. I decided to look at music videos from the 1980s as influence for the opening dance number. 

The two things I took from these was a use of deliberately jarring jumps cuts, repeated clips and most importantly (as seen in the Siouxie Sioux video) overlays. editing it like a music video would add to the artificiality of the montage and insert archive footage seamlessly to add verity to it.

The overlays ended up not working with the footage so instead they became inserts to the overall film.

How to assess your first draft like a script editor

PLOT What's the story? Is it easily strapped across the script length? Do the scenes flow well from one to the other? Does if feel disjointed; hard to follow? Does this story grab/engage/amuse/alarm? Where is the drama and how is it metered out over the length of the script? SUBTEXT What is the underlying motivation of the characters here? What is not being said, but is still clear in each scene? Does the subtext help/promote/push the storyline? CHARACTER Do I believe in any of these people? Do I like/hate/have any feeling about them? Are they rounded, credible, real on the page? Do I follow, empathise or engage with their subtext, and want to follow their journey across the script? VISUAL IMAGERY Can I see, in my mind's eye, each scene clearly as it is presented on the page? Is there a use of colour, visual imagery, light, to evokemood or carry a message? Do the images chosen, speak for the storyline? PACE Can I feel a rhythm here? Does the narrative flow across the length of the script? Does the pace affect and highlight the dramatic impact of the storyline? Does this feel all on one level, or can I detect an ebb and flow to the narrative? MESSAGE What is this script about? What are the themes revealed by the narrative and do I care about it? It's hard, exposing your work to anyone else, even your mum. I truly hope you get a good Script Editor, who will help you fix the jags and celebrate the best bits of your work.
