#OTD in 1608 – Sir Thomas Phillipps was granted a license by James I to the Old Bushmills distillery in Co Antrim, which is thought to date from at least 1276 – the oldest distillery in the world.
Uisce beatha is the name for whiskey in the Irish language. The word “whiskey” itself is simply an anglicised version of this phrase, stemming from a mispronunciation of the word uisce. This may in turn have influenced the Modern Irish word fuisce (“whiskey”). The phrase uisce beatha, literally “water of life”, was the name given by Irish monks of the early Middle Ages to distilled alcohol. It is…

Siege of Yorktown
The Siege of Yorktown (28 September to 19 October 1781) was the final major military operation of the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783). It resulted in the surrender of British general Lord Charles Cornwallis, whose army had been trapped in Yorktown, Virginia, by George Washington's Franco-American army on land, and by Comte de Grasse's French fleet at sea.

War Comes to Virginia
In the spring of 1781, as the American War of Independence approached its sixth year, the British came to Virginia. 1,500 British troops under the command of the American turncoat Benedict Arnold landed at Portsmouth in January, going on to capture and burn the city of Richmond. Arnold was joined two months later by 2,300 more men under Major General William Phillips; together, Phillips and Arnold defeated a Virginia militia force at Blandford in late April before going on to burn the tobacco warehouses at Petersburg. They remained in Petersburg as they awaited the arrival of Lord Charles Cornwallis, who was marching up from North Carolina with 1,500 men, the survivors of the costly British victory at the Battle of Guilford Court House. Cornwallis reached Petersburg on 20 May, several days after General Phillips had died of a fever. Arnold returned to New York in June, leaving Cornwallis in sole command of the combined British army, which numbered over 7,200 men.
Cornwallis was not supposed to be in Virginia. Indeed, Sir Henry Clinton, commander-in-chief of the British forces and Cornwallis' superior officer, had ordered him to merely suppress Patriot resistance in the Carolinas. A task that had, at first, appeared easy enough soon turned into a quagmire, as Patriot and Loyalist militias tore each other to bloody shreds in the South Carolinian backcountry. All the progress Cornwallis had made in pacifying the country quickly unraveled after two defeats at the Battle of Kings Mountain and the Battle of Cowpens. Even his eventual victory at Guilford Court House left a bitter taste in his mouth, as he had lost over 25% of his army and had allowed the elusive American general Nathanael Greene to slip through his fingers. It was clear that his strategy would have to change if he wanted to win the South, no matter General Clinton's orders. His solution had been to invade Virginia. Greene and the Carolinian militias counted on supplies and reinforcements from the Old Dominion; should Virginia fall, Cornwallis calculated the rest of the South would fall with it.
Now, with the strength of Arnold's and Phillips' armies added to his own, Cornwallis put his plan into motion. He first struck toward Richmond, sending a small American army under Gilbert du Motiers, Marquis de Lafayette, running, before dispatching raiding parties into Virginia's heartland to seize supply depots and disrupt lines of communications. Lt. Colonel Banastre Tarleton and his dreaded British Legion were sent to Charlottesville, where Governor Thomas Jefferson and the Virginia General Assembly had relocated after the burning of Richmond; warned of Tarleton's coming, Jefferson and all but seven of the legislators managed to escape into the mountains mere minutes before 'Bloody Ban' arrived to apprehend them. Finally, on 25 June, Cornwallis' main army arrived triumphantly in Williamsburg. It might have been the start to a glorious conquest – had Cornwallis not received fresh orders from General Clinton the very next day.

The orders were for Cornwallis to suspend military operations in Virginia. Clinton had learned that a sizable French fleet was sailing up from the West Indies, and he feared that New York City (where Clinton himself was located with 10,000 men) was its target. Cornwallis, therefore, was to go on the defensive, march to the nearest deep-water port – Clinton recommended Portsmouth or Yorktown – fortify it, and wait there for further orders. Cornwallis was deeply frustrated by these instructions, as he believed that it was in Virginia where the war would be won. Nevertheless, he did as he was told. He marched out of Williamsburg, pausing only to lay an ambush for Lafayette's pursuing army; the resulting Battle of Green Spring (6 July) bloodied Lafayette's force but did not destroy it. Cornwallis pressed on, ultimately choosing Yorktown as his destination. By 6 August, he had landed his troops there and had begun to fortify both Yorktown and Gloucester Point, just across the York River.

(Author's note: This takes place during 'Forever and Ever', one of the most disliked thomas episodes by the community. I am taking this episode and making something new out of it, so please enjoy!)
"So Edward, What do you think?"
Gordon asked, confident that he'd be able to persuade Edward to come back to Tidmouth sheds. It had been a while since Edward left the sheds for Wellsworth (Aka Edward's Station), and the news of Henry moving to Vicarstown left the big blue engine in a frantic state of denial.
He hoped Edward would say 'Yes, i'd love to come back!' or something along the lines of that. It was only what Edward said that made his world come crashing down.
"Thanks for asking Gordon..again. But i'm very happy at Wellsworth!"
That was the final kicker for Gordon. Everything in his life was crumbling down at this point and it finally hit rock bottom. Even if he were to see Edward and Henry occasionally, it just wasn't the same without them at Tidmouth Sheds.
The poor Blue engine began to stammer and plead with the other blue engine, frantically trying to find the words he so desperately tried to grasp. It wasn't until Phillip and Sir Topham Hatt showed up that Gordon really was at a loss for words. He could barely hear the Hatt's scolding until he finally snapped.
"It's not fair!" Gordon Exclaimed. None of them expected such an outburst from such a big engine. His face was flushed red in anger and sadness, tiny tears starting to well up in his eyes.
"First it was you Edward, and now Henry's leaving too! This is the worst thing ever!" He shouted louder than his pumping pistons as he started to back away, trying his hardest to hold back the tears that wanted to break down his face.
Once he was out of sight, Edward looked to the other engines and Sir Topham Hatt. They all wondered what was going on with Gordon. First it was the unneeded temper tantrum and now he was not acting like himself. Edward decided that without a word to even Sir Topham Hatt, he'd head out to find Gordon himself and talk to him.
~~~
Gordon softly sobbed in his birth at Tidmouth sheds, trying his hardest to rid of the tears that stained his face. His conductor was helping by wiping away the tears with his cloth tissue, But Gordon didn't feel any better.
"Don't worry Gordon," Said his conductor, whom tried to give a warm smile to the big engine.
"I'm sure once you talk to Edward, things might not be so bad." Gordon sniffled.
"Nothing will help with how i feel, Everything in my life is being taken away from me!"
the conductor consoled the big engine, before heading back to the cab to find something important.
"I know exactly what you need, Gordon." his conductor said, as be walked back to the engine with a blue pacifier, perfectly matching the big engine's color.
Gordon's face flushed, he was embarrassed to see such an item in his sight. "I don't need that...thing." He uttered, looking away in embarassment.
His conductor sighed.
"Gordon, i've said it many times and i'll say it again. There's no shame in using this if it helps you calm down. Now let's not try to make a fuss about it." Gordon hated to admit, but his conductor was right. And so, without even making a grumble, he lets his conductor gently pop the pacifier into his mouth. At first it felt weird for such an item to be in his mouth, but as he began to suckle, he felt his boiler bubble down slowly. He almost felt peaceful if it wasn't for the sound of a familier whistle from a familiar, old blue engine.
Gordon froze, unsure of what to say. He wanted to rid of the pacifier as quickly as possible, but Edward would possibly question it still. He didn't have time to react when he heard the engine's voice
"Gordon?" Edward called out. No response. He hesitated in that moment to wonder if he should just leave the engine alone, until he saw the conductor step out of the birth and approached Edward. "I came to talk." Edward said softly to Gordon's conductor.
"I think Gordon would like to talk to you too, I think he really needs you right now."
"But i must warn you that He's not..'all there' right now and he'd appreciate if you didn't tell anyone else about this." The conductor finished.
Edward was surprised at the response. What did 'Not all there' even mean? Nevermind, there's no time to question things, Gordon needed someone and it was going to be him. Approaching one of the other births, he slowly entered the birth next to gordon and looked at the upset engine. he slightly gasped when he saw the blue pacifier, which made Gordon look to the side in shame. Edward felt bad for having such a reaction, but who wouldn't be surprised? Gordon, the strongest and most mature engine on the island of sodor, now reduced to a sniveling and sad engine.
"Oh my um...I'm sorry for the reaction Gordon, i'm just surprised you'd use an um... that thing.." Edward muttered, not exactly finding the words to make it sound less hurtful for Gordon.
"Pacifwier." Gordon said, the object muffling his words.
Edward's boiler perked up when he heard Gordon.
"A What? I can't exactly hear you well, Gordon."
Gordon grumbled, spitting the pacifier out in disgust.
"It's a pacifier, god dammit!" He exclaimed, only to regret his words as Edward looked hurt from it.
"I...I'm sorry Edward."
"How long?" Edward asked.
"..What?" Gordon questioned.
"How long has this been going on for you?" He asked once more.
Gordon's face flushed once more, the idea of being an age regressor was a difficult one to explain, and yet he had to explain it in some way for Edward. He sighed, and looked at the other engine.
"Since you left Tidmouth sheds. I just..i just miss you and Henry so much already. I wish you didn't have to leave."
Edward sighed.
"I know change is hard for you Gordon, but it doesn't mean we aren't friends anymore. You'll always be my friend, no matter how far apart we may be." Edward said, giving the other engine a warm and caring smile.
"But..What about the pacifier? and the meltdowns? and the-" Gordon was cut off by Edward audibly shushing him.
"Gordon. Regardless of how you..cope, you'll always be my friend no matter what. Nothing will change that."
Gordon looked down, thinking about what had just been said to him by the slightly smaller blue engine. He sighed, and looked at the engine once more, his eyes still slightly full of tears.
"Thank you, Edward." Was all he could muster out before he began to sniffle and whimper. Edward quietly shushed the engine. If it wasn't for the fact that they both lacked any limbs, he'd be rubbing the bigger engine's back and consoling him.
"It's no trouble at all, Gordon. Just let it all out."
And so, Gordon did. It may have lasted only a few minutes, but it felt like hours for Gordon when he finally calmed down. Edward smiled at the now calmed big engine, and decided that now was the time to make an offer to him.
"Hey, what do you say to this: You can stay in the sheds at wellsworth for the night, and i'll explain everything to sir topham hatt in the morning?"
Gordon smiled, his tears finally running dry.
"Can i also bring my uh...um.."
Edward chuckled.
"Yes, you can bring your Binky with you, If it helps you."
The word 'Binky' wasn't the word Gordon was looking for, but it would work for now. Before the two engines could start their leave for the sheds at Wellsworth, Gordon had to say one more thing.
"Edward?"
"Yes Gordon?"
Gordon Gulped.
"Please don't tell anyone about what you saw tonight. My reputation could be spoiled because of it.." He pleaded.
Edward smiled.
"Of course, Gordon. Your secret's safe with me."
The two engines soon took their turns on the turntable, and both set off for wellsworth, the night sky still full of stars and a bright, shiny moon.
i just want u to know that the thomas and martha lore with them fighting joe chill is everything to me. so is like everything else u post. brainrot is so fun i love it
After watching some old movies, I really want Bruce to interact with Martha's family more. The Kanes in my mind are stern, cut-throat, and ruthless in a very graceful way.
Phillip Kane (played by Charles Dance) is like that one relative from vintage Hollywood films that you have to deep clean the whole house for when they visit.
Bruce cleans it, thought. Alfred couldn't give two fucks. The poor boy is stressed though, " Yes, it's not you he scolds for a single grain of dust on the furniture."
"Self preservation is an acquired skill, sir."
Dick's never seen Bruce like that. Frantic, moving from one place to another, energised by sheer stress. He also doesn't understand what's with all these rules! "But I wanna show Tim how to play on the chandelier!"
"Not this week, darlings, please," Bruce is constantly on high alert, "Uncle Philip doesn't,--"
"Doesn't forgive lack of manners."
Philip Kane marches through the manor, sharp as ever in his military suit, bedazzled in shiny medals. He's aged both roughly and like wine, blessed with the ability to own the whole air. " And in my day, we obeyed our parents without question."
Alfred merely steps in front of Dick, Tim, and Jason, "In your day we discovered fire. Mr. Kane. Forgive us for not being interested in outdated customs."
"Alfred. Transparent as always, I see. The bald spots are new."
" The stress of unwanted guests. What's your excuse?"
Philip scoffs, merely raising an eyebrow, but somewhere under that grey titan there's a glimpse of amusement. Bruce thinks he can breathe freely, for a second, but his uncle drags a white gloved finger on the piano.
It's slightly gray, and he's rendered with a classic look of disapproval. "I take it your education isn't the only thing you've abandoned?"
"I-I tried, Uncle Philip, but,--"
"Try? You either fail, or you don't." Bruce's faces collapses with shame and Philip sighs, as if he's seen all this before,
" Just like your father. I've told my sister this is what happens with Wayne men. They always pick the easy way. What a waste of greatness."
Bruce's mouth burns with defenses for his father. It's no secret Philip never approved of Thomas. He made it abundantly clear when he didn't attend the wedding or funeral.
Right when Alfred is about to say something, Dick charges forward, little fists striking Philip's knees, '' Don't you talk about my Tati that way! He's strong, and brave, and gives great kisses!"
Little of course joins his big brother, " Meanie!"
"You'll sleep in the attic if you're not nice! That's where I put Tim when B isn't home!"
Bruce is overwhelmed with the love his children have for him. He gathers them up in his arms and gives them each a storm of kisses. Philip hums, examining the scene.
" ...Acceptable. We'll have to improve on those punches. Pennyworth, do your job for once and fetch my bags."
" Oh, fetch them yourself, you bloody cunt."
"Hn."
Marina Can't Swim, Eloise...
Tumblr media
Pairings: Colin + Penelope Bridgerton, Eloise + Penelope Bridgerton (friendship)
Summary: Penelope receives a letter from Romney Hall.
Main Masterlist | Polin Masterlist
Tumblr media
The Bridgerton family were standing in the drawing room, celebrating the wedding of their second-born son Benedict to Sophie.
Violet was standing beside Marcus Anderson. Anthony had Kate tucked into his side as their son Edmund II sat on the floor with some wooden blocks, as the heir to the Bridgerton estate played with his cousins Thomas (Lord to the Featherington family), Augie and Belinda. Colin had his arms wrapped around his wife’s waist, running his palm along her expectant stomach. There was also Daphne and Simon smiled at the newly married couple. Whereas Eloise, Gregory and Hyacinth were stood slightly glued to the food and drink table.
The only person missing was Francesca, who was currently grieving the sudden loss of her husband John Stirling.
“May I introduce, Mr. and Mrs. Bridgerton,” the minister introduced, as the family cheered. The minister bowed and left the Bridgerton house, allowing the family to celebrate in the way they wished.
“Oh, my dears!” Violet exclaimed, hugging her new daughter-in-law to her, and smiling at her son. From the time Benedict was 15, he was determined to never marry - but then one dance with Sophie at her masquerade ball changed everything.
Anthony and Colin slightly cornered the newly arrived brother, sharing their congratulations.
Penelope smiled at her husband when a gentle hand on her shoulder made her head turn. Rae, and had a white envelope in her hand. “There is an urgent letter for you.”
Penelope blinked a few times. “Thank you, Rae,” Penelope smiled at her lady’s maid and looked down at the handwriting. Which she didn’t recognise. Then she saw the posting address.
Romney Hall, Gloucestershire.
There was only one person she knew who lived at Romney Hall in Gloucestershire.
But this wasn’t Marina’s handwriting.
“Pen?” Eloise asks, giving her best friend a slight elbow.
“I just need a moment, El. I was going to sit out in the garden if Colin asks.”
Eloise nodded, watching her best friend leave the room.
Tumblr media
Colin and Eloise made their way out to the garden about five minutes later, finding Penelope sitting in a chair, staring out into the garden, not moving.
“Pen?” Colin says gently, crouching in front of his wife. He ran a thumb along her knee, waiting for her to speak.
“Pen?” Eloise called, taking the seat beside the redhead.
Penelope let out a shaky breath. “It is from Sr Crane,” Penelope said, looking down at the singular piece of paper. “Something has happened…”
Colin looked up at his wife, gently wrapping his hand around her wrist - a way of comforting her, so she could get the words out.
“Marina fell in the lake at Romney Hall…”
Eloise’s eyes bounced back and forth between Colin and Penelope. They both seemed a little bit shaken by it. “What does that signify?”
“She cannot swim, Eloise…”
Tumblr media
The trio made the choice not to tell the rest of her Bridgerton family, about the letter they had received. Benedict and Sophie were safely sent on their honeymoon to My Cottage.
Colin and Penelope made their way back to Featherington House, as Daphne and Simon decided to make their way back home with their two children. As Violet took Eloise, Gregory and Hyacinth back to Number 5.
Eloise found herself sitting at the writing desk in her room with a piece of paper in front of her.
How I'd adapt TTTE BWBA s22 ep 2; "Forever and Ever"
Original summary; Gordon has a tantrum about all the changes being made to the railway and is sent back to his shed in disgrace, Gordon insists that he is happy to stay there forever but his new friend Nia from Kenya helps him to see the changes in a different light.
My adapted summary; Ever since Edward left the sheds, Gordon had been quite bitter about the changes. Now that Nia has moved in and Henry suddenly announcing that he's moving into Vicarstown, Gordon becomes enraged. In retaliation, he takes his frustration out on Nia and causes an accident.
Plot
A year had gone by since Edward's departure from Tidmouth Sheds, and despite how long it's been, Gordon still can't stop being bitter about it. Since Nia's arrival, Gordon had been disrespectful and belittles her often, bumping her out of the way and calling her a "weak little tank engine". He just directs his grumpiness on to her. One day, he hears a conversation between Henry and Sir Topham Hatt and is horrified to learn that Henry wants to move out.
Tumblr media
(Not my art btw, it's on DeviantArt)
He confronts Henry the next day, and Henry tells him "Going to Vicarstown is my choice, Gordon. I don't need your say in it!". Gordon then goes to Sir Topham Hatt about the changes, ranting to him about the changes, but STH just says;
"Edward left Tidmouth to mentor Phillip and Rosie by his own choice, Gordon. Henry is moving away by his own choice as well, nothing can stay the same forever, you know. Just deal with it, and move on"
Sir Topham Hatt doesn't realise how much the changes are actually stressing Gordon out and agitating him.
When Gordon is getting his coaches shunted, he finds that Nia is shunting instead of Percy or Thomas. He's already angered by the sudden announcement of Henry moving out, and Nia, the one who (in Gordon's eyes) replaced Edward, decides to try and calm him down.
Gordon yells back at her, and Nia just retorts by saying;
"Ugh...I wonder how Edward and Henry put up with you, you're such hard work!"
Nia never means this in a rude way, she's just annoyed by Gordon. This remark upsets Gordon even further, so he decides to pull a trick on Nia... the same trick he pulled on Thomas decades ago.
He goes along with it and heads off with the Express early, and doesn't give Nia time to uncouple from the coach.
As Gordon speeds down the line with Nia in tow, he doesn't listen to her begging him to stop and just laughs it off.
Tumblr media
(Imagine he's laughing maniacally)
My version of Nia was built without a proper safety valve, so she is a boiler explosion waiting to happen. Her boiler is heating up fast, luckily, her driver manages to reach her coupling rod and uncouples her. But as she's uncoupled, Gordon had reached a junction at that point and Nia ends up going off the rails and hitting a tree at full force, denting her buffers.
Later on that evening, everyone and STH find out what happened and confront Gordon about his errant behaviour.
Gordon is quick to defend himself, claiming Nia "replaced Edward and forced Henry out". This is when he tries venting his hatred of the changes. STH and everyone else just assume he's making up excuses and is overdramatic; he's not.
STH; "Excuses, excuses! I am sick and tired of your whining, Gordon! Nia is staying in this shed and that's final! We must not be so rude!"
Thomas; "You're definitely a big fat Galloping Sausage now, Gordon! You just can't go a day without complaining! Bother, even pulling the same trick on her like you did on me? That's pathetic!"
James; "Just disgusting, Gordon! I don't remember you being so horrible towards tank engines like you were today!"
Emily; "Shame on you..."
After this argument, STH tells Gordon that he's banned from pulling the Express until he gets his behaviour sorted out and is being locked in his berth. Gordon desperately begs him not to, but STH doesn't listen. He is shut up in the sheds, where he has a nightmare about Edward and Henry getting scrapped and wakes up in the middle of the night, unconsciously tearing up and reflecting on how everyone treated him and his dream.
The episode ends with Gordon whispering;
"....N-Nobody cares how I feel...my own controller doesn't c-care how I feel... why does nobody care about me?"
Tumblr media
The episode ends.
Yeah, if I were to do Forever and Ever, it would be pretty dark and angsty. It's all hurt for Gordon and no comfort. Plus, it would show a bit of Gordon that's vulnerable and no longer all pompous and arrogant, instead all self-conscious and soft.
My Ttte Designs (Percy):
Tumblr media
Headcanons:
Friendly, chill, mature, smug and can be a snarker sometimes. His personality was based on the more grumpier Percy that appeared in the classic series.
Caterpillar? Nah, they're a green centipede. Still, don't call them "Dirty Percy".
Is a lot less emotionally intelligent than canon Percy. Good thing when you're trying not to be manipulated and you're trying to stand up for yourself and your friends. Bad thing when your friends need emotional support and you end up giving them shit advice.
Demiboy and questioning. Uses he/him and they/them pronouns. He's trying to figure out what kind of people he's interested in. Girls and boys are off the list but he has a slight attraction to other genders. That being said, if's they're ever in a relationship, it just might be queerplatonic.
Loves analog horror like the Mandela Catalog, the Boiled One Phenomenon, etc. Heck. he ever brought the Boiled One plush.
Also they love ugly/creepy plushies and giving one to somebody means that they care for that person deeply. So if he ever gives you a fucked up plush, don't throw away. It probably means that you're one of his loved ones.
Their human age is 21 while their actual age is unknown since their og engine basis isn't a real one. However, they did get rebuilt into an actual engine basis following their REDACTED. The engine basis that they were rebuilt into is unfortunately unknown as well.
Is a fan of weirdcore and rap music. His favorite artists are Jack Stauber, Eminem and Connor Price.
Is the second oldest sibling between Pluto, Phillip, them and Mavis. Toby and Henrietta are their adopted parents.
Real name is Percival but just likes to be called Percy.
His left eye is blind while his right eye is fine. So his vision ends up looking extremely weird.
They're taller than Toby but is shorter than Emily.
SPOILERS FOR THE NEXT HEADCANONS!!!!
He used to be like his canon counterpart. Extremely naive, kind and gullible. He was Thomas' best friend, was confused about long words and was the sweetest engine in the Steam Team. At that time, Percy was 18, Thomas was 15.
Toby was extremely close to him as well, basically forming a father-son relationship with the saddletank engine.
That all changed when the tank engine suffered a series of accidents to ensure that he will never be the same....
First, in TOTB, Percy gets caught in a landside trying to save James like in the movie. The difference however was that Percy's left arm and right leg got DESTROYED and had to be amputated since they were damaged beyond repair. He was given wooden prosthetics to help him with his work but become extremely irritable and moody afterwards.
This then leads to him growing resentment towards Thomas, James and the others when Belle and Flynn were introduced in DOTD. All of the events from the movie are pretty much the same like Percy being manipulated by Diesel 10 except for two key differences: Diesel 10's plan involves more than taking over the Steamworks and actually wanting to BURN DOWN Sodor and there are some nice diesels like BoCo and Mavis who were roped into Diesel 10's plan, believing that Diesel 10 was advocating for equal treatment for diesels.
At the Steamworks where Diesel 10 was ready to burn it down, Percy gathers all of the steam engines, the nice diesels and Sir Topham Hatt to try and stop the maniacal diesel. This leads to a violent confrontation until Diesel 10 rips the left side of Percy's face OFF, leaving Percy with a half mutilated face. Furious by this, Thomas charges towards Diesel 10, angrily knocking him into the wall.
Above Thomas was the giant mechanical claw used to lift engines up when they were being repaired, came loose and was about to hit Thomas in the head. But in the last moment, Percy pushed Thomas out of the way and got a concussion. Toby, completely devasted, ran to the saddletank engine and started begging him to wake up. Enraged, Sir Topham Hatt banished Diesel 10 to the smelters' yard as punishment and Percy was sent to the Mainland for repairs.
In the Mainland, the workers were able to stich the left side of his face back together and were about to gave Percy new metal prosthetic limbs when they realized that they didn't enough supplies to make them. So in a desperate attempt, they went to the scrapyards of a random railway and used the remains of a gray diesel to make the prosthetics. Percy was stuck in the Mainland for 3 years.
When Percy finally came back to Sodor, everybody were overjoyed to see him okay but something was wrong with the tank engine. He didn't remember anything about Sodor.
It eventually took some time but Percy finally remembered about his old friends and his old home. But he also found a chilling discovery as well...
January 20th 1356 saw Edward Balliol surrender his claim to the Scottish throne to Edward III in exchange for an English pension.
Edward Balliol was born around 1283, the son of the deposed King John of Scotland and Isabella de Warenne, daughter of John de Warenne, 6th Earl of Surrey and his wife Alice de Lusignan, who was the maternal half-sister of King Henry III of England. Edward married Marguerite de Taranto, the daughter of Philip I, Prince of Taranto (d. 1332) they had no issue and the marriage was later annulled.
When his father was forced to abdicate by King Edward I of England in 1296, the younger Balliol was imprisoned with him in England. John Balliol died in exile in France in 1314, Edward Balliol then in France, was recalled to England by Edward II in 1324.
On the death of the great Robert the Bruce, his four year old son, David II, succeeded to the Scottish throne. The Regency passed to the two men the Bruce had entrusted with the guardianship of his young son, Sir James Douglas and Thomas Randolph. Douglas died shortly after in a skirmish in Spain and Randolph soon followed him to the grave.
lThe Regency then passed to the Robert's the Bruce's nephew, Donald, Earl of Mar. Edward Balliol still harboured dreams that he would one day occupy the Scottish throne, a position he considered to be his by right of birth. He received support from Edward III of England and landing on the coast of Fife he proceeded toward Perth. Mar met them in a bloody battle at Dupplin Moor and was killed in the action.
Edward Balliol was duly crowned Edward, King of Scots at Scone Abbey, but Sir Andrew Murray, appointed Guardian of Scotland by nobles loyal to the memory of Robert the Bruce ambushed him at Annan and drove him back into England. The regency during the minority of the young David Bruce was taken by another Douglas, Archibald, the brother of the previous Earl. Edward III now gave further support to Balliol, he declared the Treaty of Northampton null and void due to border reiving and marched on Berwick.
The Scots met the English invaders at the The Battle of Halidon Hill, where they suffered total defeat. Berwick was forced to surrender after a long siege and Balliol was restored to the Scottish throne. The young King David was promptly sent to France for his greater safety. Balliol paid homage to Edward III for his kingdom, destroying the Scots independence that Robert the Bruce had fought so long for.
Following the English victory at Halidon Hill the town of Berwick and the lands of the Borders and Lothian were ceded to Edward III by Edward Balliol. This ensured that warfare between the two countries would continue as the Scots fought to regain their lands. The young King David was sent to France for safety, where Phillip VI lodged him at Chateau Gaillard.
For twelve years thereafter, anarchy reigned in Scotland. When Edward III declared war on France, Phillip VI sent David Bruce back to Scotland in the hope of creating a diversion. David II entered Edinburgh in triumph, while Balliol fled to England leaving the throne open to his adversary.
After the defeat and capture of David II at the Battle of Neville's Cross on 17 October 1346, Balliol again invaded Scotland, leading an uprising in Galloway, but had no realistic hope of occupying the Scottish throne again. On 20th January, 1356 he surrendered his claim to the Scottish throne to Edward III, in exchange for an English pension. Edward Balliol died in 1367 at Wheatley, Doncaster, Yorkshire.
Sylas Thomas Pham who...
Was legally "Sylas Thomas Graves" but went by his mom's surname when he joined the SC to avoid his merit being overshadowed by his relation to their CEO and founder.
Grew up having to call Phillip "sir". Still does it now that he's grown.
Got kicked out of his private, catholic school at the age of 11 for fighting other kids.
Fought more kids in public school but miraculously calmed down when his baby brother Phillip begged him to stop. (other kids were afraid to be junior's friend)
Was a boy scout because his dad made him do it. Got reaaally good at tying knots and setting shit on fire. Maybe he shouldn't have been a boy scout.
Nobody calls him Sylas. Well, some people do. But if you know him, you know he goes by Tommy. Calling him by his government will make him feel weird.
Told Phillip "YOURE NOT MY REAL DAD" once and got hit with "I CHANGED YOUR DIAPERS AND MARRIED YOUR MOTHER I AM THE REALEST DAD YOU'RE EVER GON' GET"
Is somehow babied to death by his mother and has to kneel down when he gets scolded by her.
Has to deal with Junior's eccentricities and his extroverted family despite being introverted
Played lacrosse or football in highschool. Highkey a jock but didn't run the same circles as them.
Would've become a nurse if he didn't join the army.
Left the Shadow Company because of a disagreement with Graves, one of them being having Phillip Jr. be involved (he's too clean for a job like this.)
Masked up and was mostly anonymous. Not alot of people knew him as Graves' kid. Liked getting his hands dirty and did as he was told.
Told Phillip Jr. he didn't have what it took to be the SC's heir- not out of jealousy or spite, but because as clever and as sly junior was, he was still "too good".
Cannot express himself for shit. Horrible with vulnerability.
Hates therapy. Goes anyway because goddamn it- it works.
Has had maybe two serious girlfriends but can't be bothered to really date- relationships require getting to know people, and he doesn't wanna go through all of that for something that probably won't work.
Got his mom's stubborn attitude and faulty loyalty. Still considers himself a part of the SC despite no longer fucking with them and will latch to a group if he learns to love it.
Honestly? Horribly lonely.
Can't dance. Refuses to dance. Can't sing. Doesn't like karaoke.
Only rode a motorcycle in highschool/college because his dad told him he could have it if he could fix it. (he did not believe he could fix it.)
Has a bunch of scars, inculding a giant one that wraps around his head. The story changes everytime. Nobody really knows how he got it. He calls it his "halo"
100% believes he will go to hell for everything he's done, but won't stop himself from doing it since he believes he's doing whats right.
Has almost killed Nikolaj Zakhaev. Or Nikita. Those fuckers look alike, shit who knows which one it was.
Doesn't even know why he's doing any of this anymore.
Was mentored by his mom's old teammates when he finally got recruited to the 141. Looked up to his uncle Kyle/Gaz a whole lot (much to Anna's chagrin) and especially to the legacy of Ghost.
Wow. Another monster engine au post.
First of all, I've decided to say that I will begin answering any questions for this au. Drawing requests, lore questions, anything. Ask. Now
There's a few.
