The Chicago Park District is seeking an experienced candidate to join our Natural Areas team, a part of the Park District’s Department of Cultural and Natural Resources. The Special Projects Assistant will be a member of the Rethinking Lawns project, a multi-disciplinary team exploring the ecological and ecosystem services benefits of traditional lawns, natural areas, and native, short-statured lawn replacement plantings. The ideal candidate will have experience in project coordination and ecological field work, preferably in a leadership capacity.
Key responsibilities include leading a team of seasonal research assistants in collecting data on plant cover, pollinator visitation, water infiltration, temperature, and soils at sites throughout Chicago and at the Chicago Botanic Garden. The Special Projects Assistant will participate in regular project coordination meetings with the research team, and oversee scheduling, coordination, communication, and data entry. They will also regularly interact with landscaping contractors, colleagues and the project team regarding installation and maintenance of plantings. Exceptional candidates will have some experience in data management, and analysis using R, and/or GIS. There are opportunities to present at local and national conferences. Local travel to field sites is required.

The more science literate a society becomes, the better equipped it is to meet the challenges of the contemporary world. Consider these ways to improve the public understanding of science:
Combat misinformation. Science education is essential to combating misinformation. Unless people know how to vet sources of information, they’re more prone to take untrue or science illiterate alternatives at face value. This has led to people outright denying the reality of climate change and global warming, as well as refusing to take life-saving vaccines.

The Bachelor is a 3-years program and you get paid while you study!!! First year, 1.300 EUR per month, then 1.450, and finally 1.600 EUR.
You have full access to all SAP facilities in the Campus, like the canteen, the sport gym and many other social places, with no costs on your side.
The Vocational Program is intended to hire young people, so once you complete your Bachelor, you pass the exams, the chances are quite high to be hired in SAP and start your career there.
The whole program is paid 100% by SAP. In detail:
this is not for German students, this is for any EU non-German student that is willing to start a Bachelor program intended to hire a future developer/data scientist/AI expert. For any EU citizen, this Bachelor program has no costs on your side, you just come and start.

It is tremendously important that people have a well-rounded knowledge of the world. You may think you don't need to know about classic lit or chemistry, but you are more than your job. You are a member of society. You are a voter, and may be a parent. History, art, literature, and science are very, very connected to politics right now, and it's important you understand those things. You need to understand how the world works.
You need to be capable of working even when you don't want to, and thinking through tough concepts. Your brain is like a muscle. If you've ever tried to do something after a long time and discovered that you can't remember how, then you know that, like a muscle, your knowledge will atrophy if you don't use it. If you refuse to sit down and think, even when it's inconvenient, you will lose the ability to do so.
Anyone who uses generative AI is making themself lazier and dumber. Don't do that. Have some self respect.
*I say generative AI because I am not again all AI on principle. There are some ways that it could, if done right, be very helpful. My beef if with the scrape-for-data-and-spit-it-back-out AI.

I want to go into environmental science as a career but im worried im just not smart or disciplined enough for that. I want to help the earth but i know its a lot of work to get there and im worried I won't be able to push through to do that. Any thoughts?
Environmental science does indeed require discipline — data acquisition, research, lab hours, field work, systems thinking — and demands a mind agile enough to combine ecology, chemistry, policy, and humanity itself. It is also a field in which one encounters loss regularly, be that through species extinctions or capitalistic negligence.
However, keep in mind that you do not have to be perfect to be useful. You need only care enough not to give up. Intelligence is not fixed, but something which continually evolves and expands. Skill sets take time to acquire, methodologies require practice. What matters is your own curiosity, resilience, and humility. Science is an immensely humbling field. I constantly confront how little I know, how ill-equipped I am to understand the vastness and complexity of our universe. But I care about what I do and I have developed a resilience to adversity by pacing myself. Allow yourself, too, to grow gradually.
Pursue your dreams scared if you must. But pursue them. Often the most difficult of challenges are the most worthwhile. I wish you the very best as you move forward, whatever path you may travel.

This post documents the fully filled-in information on Kira Kitazato gained through progressing his Confidant! It contains things that could be considered spoilers for his Confidant, as part of the information is a summary of its story.
Kira is available in the nighttime most days, when it isn’t rainy. His Confidant is tied to the Proficiency social stat, and level 17 Proficiency is required to fully complete it.
His Confidant also requires changing a heart in Mementos.

Story
Character Details The intern doctor wearing a labcoat at the arcade is very good at shooting games. He looks hard to faze, and is very confident in his medical skills.
Personal Data 1 Kitazato is a strange man I met in the Shibuya arcade. He wore a doctor's labcoat, and destroyed his opponents in shooting games. I tried to learn his style, but didn't expect him to target me and insist on playing a round against me. However, the supervising physician he works as an intern under suddenly appeared, and they had a dispute. Although temporarily interrupted, Kitazato is very persistent about playing against me...
Personal Data 2 Kitazato has caught the attention of some women, but he doesn't seem to realize it at all... We played the shooting game, and his temperament changed drastically when he became immersed in it. In all senses, he's a terrifying opponent... After two games, he asked me to assist him in his experiment. What is the experiment going to be?
Personal Data 3 Kitazato wanted to conduct a conversation experiment on me, but it turned out that he's noticed that many patients' desire to live is gradually disappearing. In order to confirm this theory, he's been observing the reaction of his opponents while playing shooting games. The way I fought desperately against him in the game made him interested in researching me...
Personal Data 4 I learned useful shooting tips from Kitazato. After a fierce game match, the two women who previously showed interest in Kitazato came over to us to strike up a conversation. Unexpectedly, he completely dismissed them... Although he has a very caring sister, Kitazato doesn't seem to have learned how to communicate with women....
Personal Data 5 Two men were monopolizing the arcade, and Kitazato and I were the only ones to step forward to stop them. Kitazato proposed that we divide into two groups and use the shooting game to determine the winner. The match was a bit difficult, but we still won. Our victory seemed to inspire the other guests, who found the courage to call out the two rude men, and kicked them out of the arcade.
Personal Data 6 Kitazato suddenly decided to interrupt his experiment. He believed that there's a problem with his previous experimental method, and that he couldn't draw any valid conclusions from me. He was a little troubled by all this. After I asked, I learned that a patient refused to accept Kitazato's experimental surgical plan even though it was his only hope. Kitazato couldn't sit back and watch the patient give up his will to live. I mentioned that we encouraged the guests in the arcade, so Kitazato's patient may also be able to regain hope.
Personal Data 7 Kitazato mentioned his past to the patient. It turns out that he'd seen a child in the same ward as him trying hard to survive, but unfortunately he died. In order to save promising lives and reduce grief, Kitazato became a doctor. Kitazato's words finally got through to the patient, but his supervising physician was unwilling to take the risk, and firmly rejected Kitazato. So, I went into Mementos, defeated the supervising physician's Shadow, and made him have a change of heart.
Personal Data 8 Not only was his surgical plan approved, Kitazato was also given the opportunity to be the surgeon, which surprised him. But regardless of anything, things are moving in a good direction. Kitazato trusts me more, and gave me a very realistic human eyeball replica...
Personal Data 9 As the date of the surgery approaches, Kitazato was becoming more and more anxious, and even began to question himself under all the pressure. I reassured him, and he regained his composure. He decided not to let down his patient, who trusts him.
Personal Data 10 The operation was very successful. The patient expressed his gratitude to Kitazato. The supervising physician also recognized Kitazato's ability, and apologized to both of us. Although Kitazato questioned the supervising physician's sudden change in attitude, he didn't ask me any more questions. I promised to continue assisting him in the future, believing that he can help more patients regain their hope for life.

I know that there’s a phenomenon where as fields/careers shift from being male-dominated to female-dominated, they start to pay less, but has any research been done to determine specifically why this is? I know that in general women’s work is valued less, but I’ve also heard that it could be because female workers require more flexible hours due to familial responsibilities. I’ve also seen misogynists say that it’s simply because women are less skilled at these jobs, so I was hoping there’s research to address/debunk these claims as well.
I talk about this a bit in this post.
For the mechanisms, there is support for both devaluation of women's work and sexist structuring of the job market as a whole.
First, this New York Times article [1] discusses the devaluation hypothesis – that society devalues and therefore underpays work done primarily by women – and this hypothesis is also supported by research [2-4].
However, some work [2, 5] also suggests that employers penalize employees for requesting flexible work arrangements (i.e., work locations, flexible hours, etc.). I want to emphasize, however, that the fact that the workforce is structured in such a way (i.e., penalizes flexibility, does not account for the needs of "encumbered" workers like mothers or other caregivers) is based on sexism [6, 7]. Such penalties exist because we devalue women's unpaid care work, making it another expression of sexism.
Notably, changes in labor supply (i.e., there simply being more workers available) and skill differences are not supported by research [2, 7-9].

so frustrated by both pro and anti generative AI people's overstating of the technologies usefulness, conflating analytical and generative AIs, lack of willingness to engage with the math/science of how the technology actually works or doing so dishonestly, pretentious arguing about what counts as 'art' or 'consciousness' that just goes in circles, borderline religious and dogmatic worship or fear of 'technology' and 'the future', and refusing to engage with the idea that maybe right now what we don't need is yet another developing technology with extremely high energy requirements.
also tired of leftist pro-generative AI people refusing to engage with the studies and research that suggest that generative AI is having a further negative impact on learning, reading, and thinking skills.
My position on generative AI is effectively this: as AI is not profitable for companies right now, doesn't do what it says it does right now, we have basically run out of more internet data to scrape, let alone good data, it is energy intensive for no good reason, and is having a huge impact on our education system which has already been on life support for decades, if we cared about the planet and education we would stuff the genie back into the bottle for the time being and deal with the more pressing issues first, before dumping huge amounts of money and resources into generative AI, because the idea that generative AI can "help solve" any of these issues is unrealistic and borderline dishonest.
Also, that most people using generative AI or convinced by it's merit/necessity in their day to day lives have been influenced by billions of dollars in advertising. It's only been commercially available for a few years. Chill.
Also also, I generally like to look at, read, and watch art made by humans. I don't have a fancy degree or 5000 citations to back up that portion of my opinion, I just think art is communication and most generative AI pieces are used/created as products/production, not communication. Does it have the potential to be used as art and communication? Probably. Will I still find it a little distasteful? Probably. But that's more because I've always been a bit of a snob.
Of course, the genie isn't going back in the bottle, so I just have to sit here and stew I guess.
