Language A-levels are mental. Within the space of a year, you go from learning about being a good citizen and the structure of family in your country/countries of study, to learning about THE OIL CRISIS OF '73 and THE VARIOUS ATROCITIES AND WAR CRIMES committed over a hundred year period.

Spanish class/learning things below ~~~
you know how in English, the number zero is sometimes read with the letter "O" (pronounced "oh" not "zero")? the common uses I can immediately think of are when cashiers read you your total, like, "sir your total today is twenty oh five," meaning $20.05) or reading phone numbers, or even James Bond 007 (double "oh" seven). I'm not even sure if this is a universally informal way to read numbers in every english-speaking country. I also have wondered if this is confusing for people with english as a second language.
ALSO, in english, the way we read years is kind of informal/a little different than just reading the number. like 1,900 worms is read differently than the year 1900.
like, the year 2015, in english I would read it as "twenty fifteen" (which would translate in spanish to "veinte quince" which is NOT correct btw)
but in spanish, I would read it as "dos mil quince" (two thousand fifteen)
SO...because I think about things like this, I had to ask my spanish teacher if there are multiple ways (informal/slang ways) to read numbers in spanish and he basically said no...but that reading 2015 as "veinte quince" would be the only plausible variation in spanish but it's basically wrong but people can technically understand what you mean...but also to never say numbers like that.
we also listened to a Shakira song at the end of last class as a listening exercise to fill in the missing words of the lyrics, and I almost wanted to ask him if Shakira's "lerololelole" is like the english equivalent of "la la la" etc. or if other people say that, or if it's unique to Shakira....but I was too fucking embarrassed because it's so non serious. but I asked my coworker at work about it and she said it might be like "la la la" but also that it might be unique to Shakira. so kind of inconclusive, I need to ask more friends about that one
just constantly trying to make sense of it all. I should also note that I am mexican and my mother's first language is spanish and both my grandmothers first languages are spanish and you think this would make it easier, but it doesn't. my mom is afraid of me learning to say bad and improper things so she doesn't answer my more strange questions and she's unfamiliar with dialects outside Mexico so she can't help me with every question I have. I have tons of coworkers who speak spanish and it's really only the very nerdy ones that think about grammar that are actually willing and able to explain language rules; i've realized most people (in english and spanish) can't explain grammar rules so yeah, doesn't make it make sense, it's still a challenge despite having some foundation

i came across this video and i think it would (and is) really working for me
find motivation and make a plan
my motivation is to open myself up to my culture and new people, and my goal is to be able to speak like a native
listen to and read in target language. write down the sentences, learn them, and repeat them over and over. (use google translate for pronunciation)
learn common or useful words. ex; alone, together, to be, to have, etc. when you see your words in a sentence, write it down and read it once a day.
write stories or journal in target language. use google translate to write 5 sentences about your day, fact check if able, and read it out loud. when you advance, start writing your own sentences and then fact check them by translating them in english
get books in target language even if you can't understand them. flip to random pages and see if you recognize any words. make it a goal to read this book.
watch movies and shows in target langiage. actively listen and try to understand. copy down sentences that seem useful and take advantage of subtitles.
make stories out of vocab. begin with english then translate to target language (friends or google translate, must have access to audio for pronunciation). read and listen until you know it by heart.
speak to yourself in target language from the beginning. pretend you are already a native speaker.
additional ;
a 2016 study showed a 17% improvement in English language comprehension when ESL speakers watched a TV episode in English using English subtitles.

Daily Check-in: April 14, 2024 🎀
Hello lovelies! Life is looking better again, but omg was Wednesday thru Saturday morning rough for me. Even last night I was crying my eyes out, but things got better today so I am happy. I want to make a small announcement about the future of my blog: I am changing the theme!! I will still be keeping the pinterest-image, pink, girly aesthetic for my more general posts (lists, routines, etc) but for my daily check ins, I will be using photos I take myself (anonymous surroundings, notes, food/drinks, etc) and colors and emojis that compliment the photos! I have been wanting to change the vibe a bit lately to make it more me, more personal, and I think now is the time to do so! I'm excited to start taking my own photos now, that'll be so fun!!
🩷 What I Accomplished:
washed my sheets, towels, blankets, and comforter
washed and put away all laundry
cleaned the bathroom
packed shoes to ship from my depop shop
cooked chicken fettuccine alfredo from scratch (I made the sauce myself too! it was heavy on the parm and some pieces of chicken were salty, but it was so yummy and rich in flavor!)
planned out some of my week
packed my gym bag for tomorrow (I'm gonna start working out again, I'm nervous)
did my guided journal and morning journal
read 3 chapters of The Untethered Soul (interesting so far, going to keep reading to see how I enjoy it)
wrote out my brain dump for the week
reflected on the week + updated with my accountability buddies
bought groceries (time to make smoothies for breaky this week) and toiletries
🩷 Good Things That Happened:
my pasta was super yummy
had a long phone call with my dad (it was a good talk!)
finally read a physical book and not on my ipad
had such a nice, long shower early this morning
confidently planned goals for the week
my psyc assignment got extended til Wednesday for the whole class
found a recipe for avocado protein smoothie (excited to try it)
🩷 Stuff For Tomorrow
make a breakfast smoothie
gym cardio workout
need to ship shoes I sold
need to complete my homework
studying Spanish (have an italki lesson on April 22nd!!)
read some more
studying chemistry in preparation for my finals
No "what needs to go better" for me today, because today was a really good day. I'm feeling better and life itself is working out the way I knew it would. I just gotta trust in the universe more.
til next time, lovelies 🩷
