"This expansion was going to be called Exalted March, and here, Varric was going to finally step out from the interrogation room so we could play in the present day, so to speak. It was also here that Varric - in a climactic confrontation new villain Corypheus, introduced in Legacy - was going to die. "So what I wanted to do with the expansion was: there's a lot of stuff we cut and I really wanted to put a bowtie on the Dragon Age 2 story," former lead writer David Gaider told me earlier this year while chatting about the creation of the Dragon Age world for a piece about maps. "It had the confrontation with Corypheus and the whole thing. We'd introduced him in a DLC, which I didn't want to do, but we did it, so I wanted to sort of tie that off. And I wanted to kill Varric because he was the viewpoint character and I'm like, 'This is his story, it needs to end with his death.' "He was the unreliable narrator, right?" he added. "I felt like it had to end with him. Exalted March, however, was never released. BioWare cancelled Exalted March to refocus the studio on new game Dragon Age: Inquisition and the move to new engine Frostbite. The expansion was "cannibalised", as Gaider put it, talking to me, and expanded to become Inquisition. Which is how Corypheus suddenly became the main villain in Inquisition, and how Varric managed to stay alive. It didn't stop Gaider trying to kill him again, though. "I tried to kill him in Inquisition," he told me. "I think mainly because I didn't get to do it in [DA2]. And everyone was like, 'But the Inquisitor isn't Hawke! It lacks the same meaning.' And I was like, 'Yeah, I guess you're right.'" Still, it was a difficult thing to let go of. talking about hcs or maybe slightly character meta, i genuinely do not think tommy's a character who would wax out loud about how much he loves buck or reassure him with all the sweet prose in the world. not because he struggles with communication (though there'd be the occasional thing that'd pose a struggle) but because i think tommy's a concise and direct communicator. he picks up on buck's cues all the time and intervenes directly with what needs to be said/asked.

i also think that tommy's someone who's more affectionate with his actions than his words. we don't see him say more than that he'll try to make it to the wedding at the bachelor party but we see the degree of what making it to the wedding means to him. we don't see him go on about how he liked buck back, how he wanted to spend time with him too etc. but we see him initiate that first kiss which spells out here you go, this is how i feel too.

i also think that this is a greater match for buck's character than someone who will reassure him with endless waxings of poetry because actions indeed say more than words and buck having someone who makes him feel loved and secure with a simple "i love you" "of course" "well, i'm here" is a testament to how far buck has come but also the trust and the faith cultivated between the two of them. before they reach that stage, it could also serve as a great point of disjuncture between their respective ways of communication (and dispositions and needs) where they try to learn each other's language.

Something about older Jason looking at the child version of himself, the innocent victim, and feeling the need to defend and avenge him the way no one else will. They'll call him reckless and try to pin the blame for his death on some unique failure of his personality, the problem isn't Robin the problem is he was just a bad fit for Robin! And then older Jason coming back to life and spits on their twisted grief. Fuck you, that innocent child deserved more. You took his memory and ruined it to make yourselves feel better. If no one will give him justice then Jason will take it himself no matter who he has to kill to get there. It's the only way he can move forward.

Something about older Cass looking at this child version of herself, this innocent who has no idea what she was doing when she was tricked into killing, and finding her irredeemable. She will forgive everyone for everything if they need a second chance but she cannot forgive that innocent child. She spends ten years wanting that child to die for their sin, a standard she holds no one else to. And in the end she does have to die. She can never forgive that child until the price has been paid and the guilty, tormented, suicidal mess of a girl is dead and never coming back. Only then can Cass live on. Only then can she smile without feeling the weight of her kill on her back. If no one will give that child the justice they deserve then she will have to do it herself. It's the only way she can move forward.
