NJCS 2024 Round One Eliminated Contestants (Part 1/2)

Toby Ziegler Status: Canon Jew Oh, Toby. I just can’t quit nominating you. Eagle eyed voters might remember his round one defeat last time he competed back in 2022, where he went up against Bucky Barnes. What do we think, folks? Would Josh Lyman make a better Aaron Sorkin-verse nominee? Or is my favorite turn of the millennium political escapism drama just not cut out for the high-stakes world of Tumblr tournaments? If you haven’t had a chance to watch The West Wing before, do yourselves a favor and watch it. Still bitter it’s not on Netflix anymore, but what can you do.

Han Solo Status: Transitive Jew Fun fact, Harrison Ford is Jewish! I love this one quote he said at an interview for Inside the Actor’s Studio a few decades back, “as a man, I’ve always felt Irish, as an actor I’ve always felt Jewish.” There’s something so cathartic about knowing a Jewish man gets to beat up Nazis in Indiana Jones. So why Han Solo? I’ll leave that up to you, dear readers, to deliberate. Note to self: watch Frisco Kid.

Richie Lipschitz Status: Coded Jew Riiiiiichie………. He’s not canon, but with a last name like Lipschitz, it would have to be proven otherwise. Go Nighthawks!

Ella of Frell Status: Coded Jew She questions authority. She longs for her freedom from a restrictive system. And she’s written by a Jewish woman (Gail Carson Levine!) What’s not to love about Jewish Ella? And there’s something so Jewish about the movie… maybe it’s the musical numbers. And while Anne Hathaway isn’t Jewish (and has played Jews in the past, like in Armageddon Time, making her one of the subjects of the Jewface debate in Hollywood right now), the coding inherent in any story written by a Jewish author is enough to validate any Jewish reading of this story, in print or on screen.

Professor Hershel Layton Status: Practically Canon Jew HERSHEL!!! I mean, how could he NOT be Jewish with a name like that?

Barney Guttman Status: Canon Jew So canonically Jewish that it’s practically screamed from the mountaintops! I absolutely adore this quote from Hamish Steele, the creator of the series. “… I actually think a lot of Zack’s mannerisms and personality influenced Barney. And when I just filled out the role in the comics, it just made sense to make him Jewish — in each version of the show, the characters become more like real people and more set in the real world. … All of the representation on the show, it never came from box-ticking. The show is set in the real world. It’s disingenuous not to represent the real world by representing all the people.” Plus, his last name is Guttman. Guttman!

The names of thousands of innocent children, killed in Gaza, have been read out by dozens of artists and supporters in a vigil outside the Palace of Westminster.

Actors including Steve Coogan and Juliet Stevenson stood in the shadow of the Elizabeth Tower to help read out the names of more than 16,000 children as part of the Choose Love-organized campaign to "honour" those killed in the last 19 months.

Later, they described what is happening as a genocide and said that people should stand up and protest if they do not agree with what the UK government is doing to try and stop it.

Coogan said he was took part to "highlight the plight of starving children in Gaza who are having their aid blocked."

He said: "I am here to bring attention to that, and not only that, but the lives of all the children who have been lost in this conflict, in this bombing which has been largely indiscriminate bombing.

"It is to shine light on the fact that these were real people, real children and they should be remembered.

"We are reading out the names to remember them as human beings and not just a statistic.

"I don't know these children of course, but when you read the name, you realise they were someone who had a life, albeit a short one and had nothing to do with the conflict.

"They were the innocent victims of the conflict, and that the vast majority of the families had nothing to do with this conflict, even where their families did, it doesn't justify that kind of response."

He described what is happening as "not only immoral, it's illegal under international law, and lots of mainstream news outlets would rather this went away and would rather ignore it."

Up to 16,000 names, of children under 18 who are confirmed dead were read and up to 20,000 children are also reported as missing, the organisers said.

The readers stood in front of a banner which read: "Gaza: Actions Not Words."

It was made up of the names of 1,700 babies, who are one year old or younger, who who have been confirmed as dead.

Each speaker, including actors Toby Jones, Emily Watson, Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa and Andrea Riseborough plus presenters Dawn O'Porter and Nadia Sawalha, read out approximately 300 names.

Coogan also said it is "appalling" the press have not been allowed into the war zone for 18 months to report on what is happening, saying "if they had nothing to hide, they would let the press in."

On Thursday Stevenson said: "It is every child who name we know but, of course, there are so many children whose names we don't know who are buried under the rubble.

"Every child whose name is known is being read because they are not numbers.

"Each child that has been killed, had a name, a family, had passions, had loves and fears as do all our children.

"There is no difference and they now have had their lives taken away.

"It is a genocide and I have just been horrified by what has been going on."

A/N: happy new year and we begin with the first chapter of multiverse and madness!!!! i'm so excited to continue write this series throguhout and the first chapter will be not so long since i wanted to make this a ''prologue of some sort''. Also, I've thought about the readers powers and i've thought about it after watching the witcher on netflix. Ciri's powers inspired me somehow to be the readers powers if that make sense. It's been five years. Five years since the war with Thanos and five years that people moved on. It seemed that everybody moved on around you, but you couldn't move on with life.

So, you did what you were at best, running away from your old life.

When you were nine, you discovered your powers. Your mother was a witch but she sadly died after sacrificing her life to save your life.

And when you got older, your powers would grow stronger than you could cause destruction.

Some people saw you as a threat. But other people envied you. But you always thought you were different than the others. Your powers weren't like Wanda's. But they were similar in a way.

Staring at the screen in front of you, you widened your eyes when you saw Peter Parker. Your Peter Parker who's been best friend with you ever since your father made the decision to be in a school for teens. The same spiderman who fought alongside you in space and the same Peter Parker who you saw as a brother and who was blamed for killing Mysterio.

Your eyes squinted towards the screen in New York as the hood of your clothing covered slightly of your frame. You turned your head and you saw everyone begin to shout and yell.

Chaos began to form on the streets as your eyes stared solemnly towards the young face of your brother. You knew at this moment, he needed your help because you promised yourself once before that you would protect him, even if you can't protect yourself.

Walking through the streets, you stopped when you sensed something. You let out a gasp as you held your hand against the wall next to you as you could hear the familiar voices come through your mind.

You recognized them instantly.

Running as fast as you could towards the familiar building in New York, you barged into Stephen's strange house. Whatever it was, you knew that Doctor Strange would have the information of it. No matter how you disliked the man, he was the only source you had since Wanda is gone. ''Stephen!'' You shouted from downstairs.

Your eyes widen when you saw the snowy atmosphere downstairs as It was covered with snow. You wondered what the hell happened here.

However, down in the basement and after fighting against Doctor Octopus, Peter was immediately transported back into Doctor's Strange house. Both of them turned towards your voice.

''Y/N?'' Peter questioned as the two walked back to the main area. His eyes widened in surprise when they saw you, standing in front of them. He hasn't seen you since the funeral and he saw that you've changed.

    Later that night, around 11, you and Josh were walking out together. No biggie. The two of you spotted Toby, alone, in the Roosevelt Room.

    “Hold on a sec,” Josh told you before ducking in to talk to Toby. “Let me guess, you finished the speech early, and are just staying here for a sleepover with the White House ghosts.

    “First of all, how many times do I have to tell you that there’s no such thing as ghosts?” A very tired Toby Ziegler looked up from some papers. “Secondly, other people were bothering me, so I sent them home to continue bothering me tomorrow.”

    “What really happened?” Josh implored.

    “I fired everyone. But this is the third time I’ve done that this week, not to mention all the times I’ve done it before, so I’m pretty sure they’re coming back tomorrow...Most of them, anyway.”

    Stated Josh, “I know someone with a renewed sense of patience and a writing ability that almost matches yours.”

    “When did you have time to fly to Sam and back?”

    “Not Sam. Y/n L/n. Do you know who--”

    “I know who Y/n is,” confirmed Toby, cutting Josh off. “They work for me. Josh are you trying what I think you’re trying? Right now?”

    Josh launched into pitching you as Sam’s replacement. “If anyone can do this, they--”

    “Y/n can write extremely well. I know that. It’s why I hired them. But Josh--”

    “What?” Josh, antsy as ever, cut Ziegler off.

    “--They won’t be able to handle it. They crack under pressure.”

    That took Josh a moment to recover from. “...It’s not that they crack. They just need someone to--”

    “So what?” Your voice filled the room. You had been listening. “So what if I crack under pressure?”

    Both men didn’t know what to say upon seeing you.

    Toby spoke first, “Y/n, what’s needed for this job--”

    “What’s needed for this job, first and foremost, is an extraordinary talent for writing. Not to be precocious, Toby, but I know I have that--”

    Josh couldn’t help a grin from spreading across his face. He was so proud of you.

    “--And as for how I get when I’m under pressure. I crack. I don’t break. It’s an anxiety disorder, and it’s not a reason you can turn me down for this job. Unless you want to get sued for employee discrimination.”

    Josh had been loving this new side of you, but he was starting to get worried about how you were talking to Toby. “Y/n--”

    Toby spoke, and Josh looked over to Toby when he did. Toby seemed impressed with your newfound confidence. “Maybe you can help,” Toby conceded. It might not have seemed like much, but you and Josh knew, coming from Toby, hearing that was like having just moved a mountain. Toby continued, “But you better actually be helping. If I ask you to leave, you better not come back until after Thursday.”

    “Understood,” you nodded. “How much time do we have?”

    “The speech is the day after tomorrow.”

    “It starts at 9pm on Thursday. You have 45½ hours,” Josh clarified, knowing what you were really asking.

    You laughed. “Why is everyone freaking out, then? That’s all the time in the world! Josh and I wrote a 5-minute speech in half that time. This is plenty of time to write the State of the Union.” You took a seat at the table and put your head in your hands. You didn’t stop rubbing your face for a few long seconds.

    “Recovering from that exchange?” correctly assumed the Communications Director.

    “That would be correct, Toby,” you confirmed.

    “Gonna need a minute or two?” as Josh, only a little tentatively.

    “Probably just a minute, Josh,” you informed, thinking of what Josh did for you the night before and taking deep breaths. “Alright, let’s do this.”

    “Josh? Are you getting in on this party too?” Toby sarcastically asked.

    “Hm? Oh, no. I’m just here for...” he trailed off, knowing you knew he was there in case you had another anxiety attack.

    You corrected him. “I think I’ll be alright, Josh. You should go home. Get some actual sleep.”

    Josh glanced nervously between you and Toby. He voiced his concerns. “The thing is, I would actually be more comfortable staying, if you’re okay with that.” He shared another look with you, and he could tell you were a grateful for his concern. “Think of me as your Donna for tonight. I’m here for whatever you guys need.” Josh took a seat against a wall.

    Toby, who was not used to Josh being so acclimating, tried to ignore him. “Okay...Let’s get started.”

    For the following 44½ hours, you, Toby, and Josh were pretty much locked inside of the Roosevelt Room. The three of you worked, ate, and slept in there. You and Toby barely had other responsibilities. Josh, the only one with other work to get done, spend most of his time working in his corner. He kept to himself, and kept a close eye on you.

    Others from the Communications Department, the ones that came back after being ‘fired’ the day before, returned about halfway through the next day. For some, it was because they had only just gathered the courage to face Toby again. For others, it was just a plain ‘screw you’ to the Communications Director.

    Regardless, you were the only one that would deal with the people who came back. It was the only way to keep them from leaving again. You were a good leader. You were kind most of the time, certainly much kinder than Toby, but you did have a relatively quick end to your patience, which was needed at the time.

    The speech was done an hour before Bartlet had to go on stage. You and your cohorts barely had enough time to change and put on deodorant before it was time.

    At that point, you and Josh had stayed up for almost four days, only taking little power-naps when you could. You and Josh fell asleep about halfway through the speech.

    “Alright, so that’s done, can I eat now, or is there something else I have to--” Bartlet cut himself off as he spoke to Leo. “Who is that asleep on Josh?”

    The President spotted Toby, and started talking again before the Communications Director could explain. “Toby, we cut it a bit close this year, didn’t we?”

    “Yes, sir--”

    Bartlet shrugged, “Ah, but that’s all our faults, isn’t it? I think we should just be grateful things worked out in the Congo before February.”

    “Yes, sir--”

    “Really though. Awesome work, Toby. Unbelievable, considering your time restraints.”

    “Thank you, sir,” but you shouldn’t just be thanking me. Y/n had a major part in writing it as well,” Toby finally had time to speak.

    The President furrowed his brow. “Who is Y/n?”

    Leo notified Bartlet, “That would be the staff member asleep on Josh.”

    “And why are they asleep on Josh?”

    Informed Toby, “The two of them have just stayed up together for four days straight working on speeches.”

    “Speeches plural?” inquired Bartlet.

    Toby replied, “Y/n wrote the speech for the high school the other day.”

    “I liked that speech,” Bartlet thought out loud.

    “It was a good speech, Mr. President,” Toby agreed. “Y/n is good at their job. Josh and I agree and Leo and I were talking during the State of the Union--”

    “And I agree too, sir,” Leo notified.

    “--We all think Y/n should be my new Deputy.” Toby finished.

    Instead of an answer, Bartlet asked,  “If it was Y/n who wrote the high school speech and helped you with the State of the Union, why is Josh just as tired?”

    Toby took a moment to respond. “He refused to leave Y/n’s side the whole time.”

    “Why’s that?” Bartlet wondered.

    Again, Toby hesitated, “Y/n has...an anxiety disorder, and Josh...he was worried about them, I believe.”

    “If we give Y/n this job, Josh will have to leave their side eventually, he knows that, right?” the President joked.

    “I do, sir,” Josh nodded. He was awake. “It won’t be a problem, sir. I promise.”

    Bartlet raised an eyebrow. “Are you sure about that, Josh?”

    Josh’s eyes drifted over to your sleeping form. He knew he was in for it. “It won’t be a problem for you, Mr. President.”

    “Alright,” Jed chuckled. He, Leo, and Toby started walking away. As soon as he was sure they were out of your ear shot, Bartlet checked with Toby, “Are you sure Mx. L/n can handle Sam’s job?” Jed Bartlet didn’t like to cast doubt on something so personal, but the President needed to be sure.

    Toby confirmed, “You should’ve seen them trying to convince me to let them help, sir. They can do this job.”

    Bartlet nodded, “Good. I can’t wait to welcome them to the family. Though, we do have to wait until they wake up, don’t we?”
