A Howling Good Time with Wolf Spiders

Wolf spiders are an extremely abundant group of spiders in the family Lycosidae, which contains nearly 2,400 species. These spiders can be found on every continent except Antarctica, and they thrive in a variety of habitats from the frigid arctic to bustling cities to volcanic lava tubes. Unlike other spiders, wolf spiders don’t spin webs and most species rarely stay in one place their whole lives, though some species build underground burrows which may or may not have a trap door.

Members of the family Lycosidae are largely solitary, and spend their lives on the ground. Like their namesakes, wolf spiders are fearsome predators that chase down their prey on foot, reaching speeds of up to 0.6 m (2 ft) per second; the human equivalent would be running the 100 m dash in 1 second. Common prey consists of ground-dwelling insects like crickets, grasshoppers, or other spiders, as well as insect eggs. Larger species have been known to take down small lizards or frogs, though this is rare. In turn, wolf spiders are predated upon by a variety of reptiles, birds, small mammals, and parasitic or predatory wasps. While wolf spiders do possess venom that is used for both hunting and defense, the venom does not cause serious symptoms in humans.

 Due to the large number of species in the family Lycosidae, wolf spiders come in a variety of shapes and sizes; some are only 10 mm (0.39in) long, while others can reach up to 35 mm (1.3 in). However, there are some characteristics common to all members. Individuals are usually patterned grey, brown, or tan to blend in with their surroundings. These spiders also have a distinct eye pattern of eight eyes arranged in three rows. The bottom row has four small eyes, the middle row has two large eyes, and the top row-- usually set further back-- has two medium eyes. This allows wolf spiders to have a wide field of vision to spot potential predators of prey. Unlike other spiders, wolf spiders also have excellent night vision-- perfect for hunting in the dark.

Another unique feature that distinguishes wolf spiders from other members of the arachnid group is their mating and parenting styles. When a female is ready to mate, she leaves pheromone markings for males to find. Interested males display a range of physical or behavioral traits, often unique to individual species, to then entice a female into mating. These traits can include swelling of the front leg segments, elongated bristles, waving the legs and pedipalps (short appendages near the mouth), or rhythmically drumming the ground. If the recipient female is not interested, she may eat the male. If she is interested, though, she allows the male to transfer his sperm before going their separate ways.

After mating, a female wolf spider will carry her egg sac with her wherever she goes. If she’s threatened, she may drop the sac, but will often return as soon as possible to retrieve it, or even claim another abandoned sac as her own. After the young hatch-- and there are typically over 100 of them-- they stay on the mother’s abdomen until they molt about a week later. After that the young disperse. Male wolf spiders typically only live for a year and die shortly after mating, while females can live for 2-3 years depending on the species.

Conservation status: Most wolf spider species are fairly abundant, but there are some that are threatened. The Deserta Grande wolf spider (Hogna ingens), Kauai Cave Wolf Spider (Adelocosa anops) are both considered Crically Endangered by the IUCN due to habitat destruction.

James: I could see him liking dogs and cats equally (he just loves love); the kind of dude who has the nastiest most feral cat who hates everyone and scratches the shit out of him but he's just like "awe no he's okay, he's just scared but he deserves love too". probably has some weird animals too (picks the ugliest/sickliest pets from the shelter), a dog with 3 legs, a cat in a wheelchair, a cat with no eyes, a dog that needs medication morning noon and night. mornings take him like 7 years because of the detailed feeding regiment he has for everyone

Remus: I see him as a cat person; dogs might be too much energy for him and require him to go outside?? on walks??? gross. he'd rather stay inside and read with his cat on his lap tyvm

Sirius: dog person, duh. though I could totally see Sirius having exotic birds?? like he casually walks around his flat with a giant ass parrot on his shoulder - he definitely taught it to swear and all the words to his favourite rock songs... trained it to say "get lost wanker" every time Regulus comes over

Regulus: cats, obviously. I think he'd find most other animals gross and exhausting

Barty: all of them. every animal. the scarier/larger/grosser the better. the kind of guy that people come over just for a tour of his basement that is floor to ceiling terrariums of various snakes, reptiles, spiders, tropical fish etc etc. might even have wild/exotics (random monkey in a diaper swinging from his four poster bed, a savannah cat, wolf dog, all of it). sometimes says he can't make it to friends events because feeding/caring is such an ordeal (but if we don't want him to be crazy/chaotic - this dude loves reptiles and snakes)

Evan: one very large exotic bred cat (like a savannah etc) and one scary ass well behaved giant regal dog breed that just stares at everyone always (like a doberman)

Lily: cats, I love that the potters had a large fluffy cat canonically. she'd be the kind that would train the cat to come for car rides and go camping with the family/harness train it (same). also could see her with a bunny (they are not for the faint of heart, she'd be such a dutiful bunny owner)

When Y/N, and the sullys first reach the reef, a boy catches her eye, and she does her best to catch his attention. She doesn't believe he likes her back, and she thinks it's ridiculous that she's so whipped for this boy. He seems to have no interest in her.

Y/N. that is what those close to you know you as. The ones that you were not close to knew you as the seventh toruk makto. The youngest ever to get chosen by the leonopteryx, the child like kiri, so in tune with nature, but with the dangerous side, as well as the soft side. You only knew one thing in life. The forest was part of you and you were part of it.

You were disappointed that you had to leave the forest. You were in love with it, the forest was part of you and you were part of it. you were so so upset about leaving it, but where your family goes, so does you. Sullys stick together. You and kiri were both quite similar in the idea that you were quite in tune with Eywa. However, you both were slightly different. She choose to be quiet and she was more calm, and would walk away from anyone picking a fight.

You were the opposite, always jumping in head first and thinking about your consequences after. You were more likely to get into a fight than Kiri since she was a lot more calm and collected. At a young age you seemed to be in more touch with the animal life of Pandora while Kiri was enamoured by everything. But you didn't relly mind and quite often disappeared into the foliage of the forests with her. Your father did not seem to worry about you that often but you definitely knew he loved you, from the times when he'd asked you What'd you'd seen and done in a day after you dragged Kiri away from the trees back to your clan.

One particular day when you were about 6 or 7, you had Kiri has gotten separated from Neteyam, spider and lo'ak on one of your trips, and not too soon after you had lost Kiri too. You didn't worry, because you knew you'd find your way back to the rest no matter what in the end. You were very very curious then, and quite often gave your parents heart attacks. At the time, there were rumours of a thanator being pregnant, as it did not happen that often, and when pregnant, they would do their best to remain hidden. The thanator, had been roaming around the outskirts of the forest, near the clan.

The people were scared of the thanator, even if your mother was one of the only people to ever have 'trained' one, the people were obviously still wary. It seems even though your siblings were aware of this, they still deemed it a good idea to go and travel into the forest themselves. Well, anyway you guys got separated, and you didn't think too much of it. You were sitting on the forest floor, petting and stroking a baby viper-wolf, who were playing with some other cubs.

Suddenly, they stopped yapping at each other and froze, giving a small, quick hiss before getting up and running away. You looked in the direction that they were running away from and saw her. The thanator was so beautiful. Some part of your body was telling you to run, but the stronger, bigger part of you was telling you she wouldn't hurt you and you had nothing to worry about. So, you stood up, cautiously walked up to her and gave your hand for her to smell you like a dog would, and she licks your palm. You just chill with her for awhile before asking her to help guide you back, but she actually does, which leads you to believe she can understand you.

And from that day onwards you would constantly sneak off into the woods to find the pregnant thanator which you named ta'éki. This carried on for several years till you were roughly about 12, at this point your entire family knew but they knew she wouldn't hurt you. ( i believe with my heart that when Thanators are pregnant they will remain pregnant for years until they believe someone other than them can take care of their baby, and that they also take a very long time to grow up, roughly 25 years to get up to the size of the one neytiri rode) You had bonded really well with ta'éki.

one day, you ran to meet her at the pool and noticed how her pregnancy stomach was gone, and she was with a tiny baby Thanator. at this point you understood her so well and you basically were able to speak to animals in the first place, and she asked you to bond with the baby. When you connected tsaheylu you instantly knew this would be a moment you would remember forever. You decided that moment her name would be ta'heyla. You did basically everything together from then on.

Once it was time for you to bond with a mountain banshee for you to become accepted as an adult, you had gone up with kiri and neteyam. For some reason, you didn't feel like you would meet your banshee there, So you told your father that and he allowed you to explore while your sister and brother claimed their banshees. In the distance, you could hear the whoops of excitement from neteyam ( you assume) successfully bonding with his banshee.

You don't mind it too much, and were climbing up some vines on the hallelujah mountains to explore some more by yourself. you hear some soft clicking noises, and something compels you to follow it and you come across a giant leonopteryx.

You instantly stumble over your own feet, and fall onto your butt. but, due to the fact she did not pounce, you knew it might have been okay to approach her. so, you did. without really considering if anything could go wrong. But you just casually asked her to be your friend, and voila! you were the 7th Toruk Makto. Avarin was a strangely coloured leonopteryx, but there was no doubt that she wasn't one. Her colours were various shades of blue and black.

Obviously people were slightly confused how a great leonopteryx ( you named her Avarin, because it just seemed appropriate) had chosen a 12 year old girl, a child. But you just didn't really care and just kind of did your own thing.

You ended up being known very well throughout your clan for your affiliation with especially dangerous animals, and you suppose that spread throughout the rest of pandora as well. Your brothers were jealous, especially lo'ak as he wanted one too. Avarin was quite wary among anyone other than you and your family, so she preferred to stay quite away from your camp, but always seemed to know when you needed her.Several years later, the sky people came back.

They hunted and hunted in the forest, searching for your father and your family, wishing to extract their revenge, which was why your father was adamant that you were not to visit the forest again, after neteyam, lo'ak, kiri and Tuk were intercepted while you were off flying with Avarin, having left the mic at home since it distracted you and made you uncomfortable.

You kind of blamed yourself for that, since you could have helped, but they managed to be okay, even though spider was taken away. since then, you had to obey, these people were really dangerous. But you could not leave your family behind, those ones in the forest, the ones you grew up with.

So, the day before you left, you ran into the forest while your parents were busy arguing to find ta'éki and ta'heyla. But ta'éki was nowhere in sight in your usual meeting spot, but Ta'heyla, the baby thanator was. And then you knew that the sky people were the reason for the disappearance of ta'éki. So, you did the only thing you could think of, you told ta'heyla everything would be fine and that you would take care of her. So, as you packed your things, you had ta'heyla curled by your foot.

You had worked for several hours trying to convince your father to allow you to bring her, and you genuinely hoped that the metkayina clan would not worry too much about her, as you knew she would not hurt anyone as long as you were present. At this age, she was the size of a medium grown tiger from earth, but you knew you would be able to bring her with you as you knew Avarin, your leonopteryx would be able to carry her.

The flight was getting exhausting for you. Avarin was a smooth flyer but several hours of sitting on a saddle no matter how smooth the flight is would get tiring real quick. Ta'heyla was on the back with you having been strapped down with some ropes you had to fashion as quickly as you could.

Soon, the waters became clearer, and you were able to see the beautiful clean water, with all these different beautiful fish and various animals swimming about. You really really wanted to take a break and touch the clear water, since you've never swam in the ocean before, the urge was really really strong, and you knew you would get along with all the creatures really well.

you shot a look to kiri, conveying what you thought of the sights with just a look. She was flying beside you, but you noticed her banshee looked slightly uncomfortable with the Avarin so close, even though hers knew it was okay.

Finally, You had reached the Metkayina clan. houses on top of the water, connected to mangroves, so many of them, with children splashing in the water and yells of happiness and joy. As the shadow of Avarin passed over them, everything quieted down, there were some screams, but the company of mountain banshees next to your leonopteryx made them not panic, because that was something that did not happen often.

You landed at the centre, and your family around you. You stepped off and helped your baby Ta'heyla down, opting to stand next to kiri, since she and you were the closest in the family.

Avarin, uncomfortable with the crowd around you pointing their spears, took off, giving a slight hiss. The people stumbled back, most likely unused to a leonopteryx of that size.

"coward!" you yelled after her, with her only giving you a light squawk. Kiri laughed at you and with that you turned around, to face the Metkayina clan, those who were in control of your future now. For some reason, your heart starts thumping, with your tail flicking back and forth, and you look around, wondering what is causing that. You spot two teenage boys making their way towards you.

From behind, they scrutinise yours and kiri's tails, laughing at it. " look at that! is that supposed to be a tail?" One of them, the taller one grabs your tail, you flush, and pull it out of his grasp, flicking your tail against his back and he lets out a squeak. Kiri covers her mouth with her hand to hide her laugh.

In the end, 'cause after ronal picks on kiri, you stepped in front of her and stopped paying attention, preferring to keep an eye out for everyone else. So, when the boy who pulled you tail is introduced as the son of Tonowari and Ronal, you flick him an interested look, finally taking in his looks. you have to admit, he's quite attractive and maybe he'll be nicer from now on. Tonowari raises the question of your thanator, and you're quick to reply. "she won't harm anyone, she's never harmed anyone in her entire life. It will be okay. I will be responsible" Your sister is quick to back you up, following your brothers and tuk. "very well, i will hold you to that." Tonowari says. You bow, glad that you are able to keep her with you.

Fast forward to your first lesson. Breathing. Tsireya saw to it that Ao'nung helped you, since he had been your tormentor. It was very very quick, but you seemed very intrigued by him. He was quick, strong, intelligent. everything you wanted in a mate. But he viewed you as untrue na'vi, and you wanted to change that. So, you did your best to prove yourself to him. For some reason, you knew that you were going to end up together, even if he was quick to ridicule you and your siblings. It seems that everyone else was quick to catch on, too.

with his hand on your abdomen, just resting under the line of your top, his hand seemed to sear into you, so warm and inviting, a contrast to his cold behaviour. The water was cold, which caused you to shiver. breathe in from your stomach, and hold it as long as possible, The way of water has no beginning and no end. Our hearts beat in the womb of the world. The sea is your home, before your birth and after your death." You turn to him, eyebrows quirked, you watch as they dive in. You follow, and so does lo'ak neteyam, kiri and tuk.

You open your eyes underwater, having a clear membrane cover your eyes, much like the metkayina, which allowed you to see clearly underwater. and oh eywa. What a sight. The clear water was so mesmerising. The fishes swimming by without being afraid, the beautiful corals, and more, Ao'nung; he looked so beautiful underwater, so in tune with the environment and the current underwater moving his hair back and forth. You didn't want to stare too long, so you changed your sight and looked towards Tsireya. She makes some hand movements, and you guess that she's asking for you to swim with them.

Your siblings, lungs bursting head back up for air, and you watch Ao'nung turn to Tsireya and ask what's wrong with them. You feel very protective, and swim back up to check on them. Once you are back above water, you look through the water and see Rotxo, who has been quiet the entire time, make hand movements to Ao'nung saying "those guys are bad divers." Tsireya interjects with "stop. they're learning" and they too, swim back up.

"are you alright?" Tsireya asks.

Tuk whines; " you're too fast, wait for us"

Ao'nung comes to the surface and jeers. "You are not good divers. Maybe good at swinging through trees, but…"

but thankfully, Tsireya hits him on the head, you're thankful because you really don't like it when he talks bad about you, and you think you really should not be interested in him.

Neteyam speaks up for the first time, "Come on bro. We don't speak this finger talk, you guys. We don't know what you're saying."

Tsireya says, " I will teach you." and you send Neteyam a smirk, laughing at Lo'ak's expression, like she said he wouldn't teach her.

Tsireya turns to Ao'nung " you will help Y/N, she is faster than them and understands quicker, once you are done, you may help me with tuk." You hear Ao'nung let out a groan, and you can't help but feel a little bit squashed.

So, you head back to the Marui, and sit on the side, he turns to you and says. "look, you are seem to understand better than your brothers that are slow, but you do not know all the hand signs, so-" He is interrupted by Ta'heyla running up to you and jumping on you. She's quite big, but you don't seem to mind it too much.

"what is that-" Ao'nung asks, cautiously putting his hand out, for what? you're not sure.

"seems like we can both teach each other some things, so let's be civil, yeah?" You turn to him, noticing his caution, you give him a shrug, and he tries to ignore it, but he definitely saw it.

"shut it forest girl" he smiles, and goes back to the lesson, and oh eywa, does your heart thump at that smile. Like Tsireya, he has dimples and oh eywa, what a pretty thing.

You ask him to discard the lesson, wishing to know more about his culture, and you can't help but watch enamoured as he describes the traditions of the Metkayina clan, not at the lesson, but at him, the way he talks and moves his hands around, it seems you're already whipped.

In honour of the last dungeon meshi Thursday (I know it’s Wednesday, shut up)

Minecraft cooking!

Where I go through the mob bestiary and treat it like a cook book.

Chicken, cow, pig, goat, rabbit, horse, wolf, sheep, cat, cod, salmon, tropical fish, llama- you know what these are, you don’t need me to explain. Both Laios and I are bored, moving on.

Villagers, pillagers, piglins- don’t eat people. I know piglins are half pig but listen. DONT EAT PEOPLE! You know the orcs? This is the same thing.

All zombies ever- technically edible. We’ve all eaten rotten flesh. Senshi would not be proud of us, it’s not very nutritious. Also, cannibalism.

Skeletons- I guess you could make a soup stock. But they’re better for fertilizer.

Vex and allays- ghosts. I don’t think we can make sorbet here either. I don’t think they work like that.

Bats- very small, not much meat. Hard to find and catch. But if you’re in a cave and in a pinch or just curious, sure why not

Puffer fish- cook very carefully. Probably just better for potions. But you can eat puffer fish, your chef just needs to be trained in how to cook it.

Mooshroom- now we’re talking. Beef, but with mushrooms. Comes with mushroom soup too. Usually raised for soup rather than meat, but still a good source of meat that’s pre seasoned.

Squid- mmmmm calamari… Laios enemy… also good for squid ink. I hear it goes well with pasta.

Cave Spider- venomous, could technically remove the poison like with puffer fish and boil the spider but I dont know. Small but have spawners, so you’ve have a steady supply

Spider- not venomous, and bigger. So I guess you could. Probably taste like giant scorpion since they’re both arachnids.

*dont eat spider eyes, they’re poisonous

Endermen- for personal reasons, I will not be eating endermen. They don’t even want to fight unless you antagonize them. More importantly, don’t eat endermen, it’ll probably fuck you up. They’re built for the end and full of chorus fruit. They’re also so skinny, not much to eat there. Ender pearls have a chance of giving you a parasite. And will probably teleport your stomach out of your body. You could try but it’s probably like jerky and you’ll see god.

Incidentally, I think chorus fruit tastes like vanilla

Polar bear- probably very tough meat. Very gamey. Beware though, they eat people too

Iron golem- that’s a robot. Don’t eat metal. DONT EAT REDSTONE! ITS RADIO ACTIVE.

Snow golem- probably makes good ice cream. Don’t eat it. Let it make ice cream. It’s just snow after all. It would just taste like water.

Blaze- it’s more of a spirit than an animal. Good for potion making, probably not tasty. A central core surrounded by rods, maybe that core has some meat on it, probably tastes a little spicy.

Striders- why? Why would you eat these poor babies? What did they ever do to you? They’re probably reptiles, so you could definitely eat them but could you live with that knowledge?

Elder guardian- really old puffer fish. Cut carefully for good sushi. But it’s such a hassel, you’re better off having a puffer fish. Plus, they’re endangered, so like, come on.

Guardian- jokes on you, it’s hollow on the inside. Check the mob bestiary, they have no internal organs. Could probably get some meat from the outer flesh but that’s also the spikes, so beware.

Ender mite- remember those parasites from ender pearls? This is them. Could def cook them though. They’re fair sized and full on meat. You’re probably be tripping balls though.

Ghast- like a squid, but balloon. They are filled with gas, to allow them to fly. So much like a dragon, likely have a gas sac that could contain gases that could ignite, be careful. But sky octopus. Lots of meat.

Magma cube- slime but spicy. Magma cream is probably yummy. We know it’s ok to ingest because it’s in potions, so I think it should be ok to eat. Just wait got it to cool a little

Slime- senshi has recipes for these buggers.

Shulker- I can only assume it tastes like living armour. It’s definitely a mussel

Silverfish- it’s a bug, it’s big, enjoy.

Wither skeleton and the wither- please, for the love of all that is holy, DO NOT EAT THE WITHER! THIS IS HOW WE GET THE PLAGUE! YOURE GOING TO GET WITHERING AND DIE!

Sniffer- I know they’re really big, I know they’re probably full of meat and they have eggs, but look at their little faces. Could you really eat them?

The Ender dragon- I mean, you beat her, might as well I guess. Apparently dragon is delicious. But also, probably full of the end, probably going to fuck yup up a bit

And now, for the big one

Creeper- as we all know, creeper skin feels like dry, crunchy leaves. It’s a moss monster with a tnt block inside. So, if you carefully cut around the explosive, you now have a very dangerous vegetable. Thick “meat”, might make a good salad.

Miracle Boxes - The True Generation

These are the second iteration of the Miracle Boxes, and the generation that lasted the longest, stretching out for several thousand years. The Miraculouses within these boxes are very similar to the generation before, save for many kwamis of the Mage Box being divided out among the other boxes of the world, and the Mage Box being hidden away as the Secret Box.

During this time kwamis were free to chose their own holders, and spent more time out in the world than in their Miracle Boxes. Guardians were protectors of kwamis in their dormant state, but were not wardens of them. Kwamis would often travel far from their boxes and across the world, acting as protectors where they felt they were needed.

Once upon a time my three cats and I lived in a swampland renting out the back room of a friend’s house. My cats were indoor-outdoor cats and so anytime the weather was nice and I was home, I would leave the door open so the cats could come and go as they pleased. Now I don’t know if you’ve ever lived in or been to a tropical or subtropical region like the Deep South, but one thing you ought to know is that swamplands are absolutely brimming with a wide variety of life.

There’s a neon pink crepe myrtle trees, cypresses that despite being evergreens they lose their needles in the fall, ferns galore, fig trees, palms and palmetto trees, every variety of waterfowl imaginable from huge black swans to ordinary mallard ducklings. All year round, something is blooming: magnolia “tulip trees” in the winter, wisteria vines smell heavenly but they spend their lives slowly consuming even the largest of sweetgum trees, the lowly dandelion, the stately rose, the deadly azalea… The bugs are bigger and weirder than any bug you’ve ever seen before from hammerhead worms to giant dragonflies, and there are all manner of cat-prey-sized critters.

My cats have caught a great variety of critters. Tiny lizard and blue-tailed skinks were the most common. Sometimes they’d only bring home the blue tails, twitching and wriggling in their teeth. My one girl, Star (a Himalayan) brought home a baby finch. I tried to save it, but it was already dead. The next day, Star caught and ate the mom. Periodically I’d find dead mice or voles on the floor who’d met a tragic end.

Sometimes Star and her bonded mate Jack (a black domestic shorthair) would team up to catch things, especially squirrels. They once caught a squirrel, brought it inside the open door and into the bathroom still alive and squeaking. I managed to get Jack off the squirrel and the squirrel escaped outside and up a tree. Another time, the pair caught and killed two squirrels in one day. Now Jack and Star only like things while they’re still alive and moving and once they die, they get bored. But my third cat, Whisper (my beautiful idiot (ragdoll?)) she rarely caught things herself, but she was very willing to eat the things the other cats caught. That day she ate both of the squirrels, everything except the tails and one specific internal organ that was white in color and looked like a flattened Brazil nut. That night, even though she’d eaten both squirrels, she still ate dinner but then she slept for a very long time after.

 The scariest things they’d bring home were wolf spiders (everyday I’d come home from work and there’d be a couple dead in the bathtub), cicadas (those things are demon spawn—so loud and huge and terrifying), and snakes. Yes, you read that right, snakes. I don’t know what kind they were, but they were thankfully not venomous (you can tell by the shape of the head). The snakes were always small, no thicker than my pinky and a foot and a half long, but they’re superfast. Do you know how difficult it is to wrangle three cats away from a small unidentified snake crawling at light speed between the furniture? It is quite hard, I assure you, quite hard. But in the end, I always got the snakes out and no one got bitten.
