August 6, 2024:
I couldn't tell if this book wanted to be silly or serious. The tone is really inconsistent when one chapter starts with family violence, survival sex work, and rape by coercion, and in the next chapter the cast of Third Rock From The Sun learns how to make donuts.
With that criticism out of the way, I struggled not to cry through the last several chapters. It's beautiful and joyful with a sad tinge on the edges. It highlights the emotion artists put into their work and makes it a more tangible thing in this world, and then it expands the idea of who is an artist and what expertise means.
It's ultimately kind, and although it acknowledges the darkness too, the kindness is much greater.

not to leveragepost in 2025 but I simply must talk about the scene where hardison plays sheherazade, because I learned an arrangement of that third movement recently and I am still so impressed
for context: I started playing violin when I was five years old. Am I great? Nah. Am I able to tell when an actor is phoning it in on violin playing? Absolutely.
aldis hodge actually played that piece. They definitely found a recording to play over him because that's what you do for TV but I rewatched that scene when I was learning that solo and got tips from his fingering. he has vibrato technique. he doesn't just pick a violin up once in a while, he's legitimately a skilled violinist who also does everything else he does
#leverage#s rants#not tired was thinking about this like violin is not an easy instrument#i remember seeing hugh grant play a violinist once and being like 'huh he got close' and he had taken like 3 months of lessons#aldis hodge is on another level#it's not a Hard-hard solo but if you do it in your first five years playing that's seriously impressive

First lesson thoughts...
I loved my first lesson!
The teacher seems to be around the same age as me. I thought I would be super anxious about it, but actually she was so nice and lovely, and I can't wait for my next lesson with her.
I need to work on the weighting of my bow when I move from a thicker string to a thinner one...and to keep my pointer finger a little closer to the others in my bow hold, so I have greater mobility.
I also need to try and use the whole bow, as I tend to stick to the middle section far too much! She gave me these notes so constructively during the lesson, and she was so helpful when she was explaining the bits for it. Especially when I'd make an accidental 'gritty' sound with the bow. That was something I'd been struggling to figure out, as I wasn't sure what was causing that sound (it was the weighting issue when changing strings).
At the end of the lesson we went over some books that I could learn from regarding the genre of music I wanted to learn, and she actually suggested the Suzuki Violin school books, which I actually already have!
With a little more confidence, I may even start recording myself so I can see my progress over the upcoming weeks.
I am so excited to put in the hours for this instrument.
