[image id: a four-page comic. it is titled "immortality” after the poem by clare harner (more popularly known as “do not stand at my grave and weep”). the first page shows paleontologists digging up fossils at a dig. it reads, “do not stand at my grave and weep. i am not there. i do not sleep.” page two features several prehistoric creatures living in the wild. not featured but notable, each have modern descendants: horses, cetaceans, horsetail plants, and crocodilians. it reads, “i am a thousand winds that blow. i am the diamond glints on snow. i am the sunlight on ripened grain. i am the gentle autumn rain.” the third page shows archaeopteryx in the treetops and the skies, then a modern museum-goer reading the placard on a fossil display. it reads, “when you awaken in the morning’s hush, i am the swift uplifting rush, of quiet birds in circled flight. i am the soft stars that shine at night. do not stand at my grave and cry.” the fourth page shows a chicken in a field. it reads, “i am not there. i did not die” / end id]
a comic i made in about 15 hours for my school’s comic anthology. the theme was “evolution”

and if I wish the owl luck, and I do, what am I wishing for that other soft life, climbing through the snow? What we must do, I suppose is to hope the world keeps its balance: what we are to do, however, with our hearts waiting and watching--truly I do not know.

Spotted one of my favorites in the wetlands- a bobolink!
This little bird may not look like much but they are in fact one of the most impressive travelers in the avian world. The bobolink is the only land bird that regularly migrates to the Galápagos Islands, which is more than two thousand kilometers outside their typical migration route. That’s an astounding journey for such a small pair of wings. I love seeing these birds. I wonder where this little fellow has been?

American poet Emily Dickinson was notably fond of this species and mentioned them often in her work. She nicknamed them “The rowdy of the meadow” due to their lively behavior and distinct song. If you like birds and poetry like me and Emily, I recommend looking up some of her words about this rowdy little bird. I’ll leave you with an excerpt from one of her more well known Bobolink related poems
Some keep the Sabbath going to Church –
I keep it, staying at Home –
With a Bobolink for a Chorister –
And an Orchard, for a Dome –

Fox, by Ian Hamilton Finlay
Published in Glasgow Beasts, an a Burd, with papercuts by John Picking and Pete McGinn (The Wild Flounder Press, 1961).
Today, 17 September, is National Fox Day in the UK.
I fucking *love* Scots writing, especially Scots poetry. There’s such expression and sharp humour in it.
I’ve only written one story in Scots myself. I keep meaning to try to write more.
