He finds the creature in a glorified morgue; as dead inside as it is sterile. The lab is already burning and the tiny thing bares yellowed teeth when he reaches for it—a fighter, and he can see why—the room is filled with corpses, mangled rodents left in pieces. Whatever tests were done here left the rat scarred and hairless, bones sticking out in broken shapes. A lone survivor. He picks it from its cage, ignoring that snapping jaw. There's more strength in the bite than he expects and he's impressed with it's audacity. "My, ain't you ferocious?" He squints down at the creature, cradling it in the palm of a bloody hand. The rat studies him with endless black eyes, as if it knows—knows that this man has killed its captors. Knows that these hands have killed many more. And still, it settles. Those eyes see further than most and in them a kinship that's reflected in icy blue. "Last one standing," he muses. And it would be easy to snap its neck and leave it with the rest, but the impulse never comes. Only a smile. "Quite the little cockroach..." He leaves with the rat on his shoulder, the flames engulfing its would-be grave, and neither one of them glances back.

thinking about that scene from Leverage at the end of The Cross My Heart Job where Chesney says, it seems you’ve killed me mr. Ford, and Nate goes “I didn’t kill you. God killed you, I just… made sure it took” and the fact that this is a former priest saying these words,

and how if you look at this episode and step .0001 to the left, it could so easily be a DS9 episode, with Kira saying that line. like!!

perhaps it’s a Cardassian ship raiding resources from Bajoran Reconstruction efforts in s1 or 2, or maybe it’s later in the show with one of the Vorta or something, but I can just imagine throughout the whole episode, whoever the villain character is and Kira basically playing 5d chess trying to outwit the other, and at last when we’re 39 minutes into the 45 minute episode and Kira and Sisko have saved the day with the help of the Orbs and/or Prophets directly, and they’ve gotten things set to rights plot-wise, and maybe the villain character is in one of Odo’s cells on DS9 or on their ship that’s about to blow and is saying that they can never return home, they’ll be cast out or killed for failing to complete their mission, and they look at Kira and say “it seems you’ve gotten what you wanted, Major, you’ve killed me” I can just imagine her doing that ferally fierce smile thing she does, looking them straight in the eye, and saying, “oh no, I didn’t kill you. The Prophets killed you, I just… made sure it took”

like. I need to sit down. this concept slaps so hard. I want to turn this into an actual fic now omg. like. I’m so hyped over this whole concept

(ps maybe with a part midway thru the story where Kira is feeling like she’s run out of options and Sisko looks at her and suggests they turn to the Prophets ((so it would have to be later seasons then!!)) and somehow works in a “we provide… leverage” reference because. of course)
