For 58% of U.S. women who had induced abortions in 2020, it was the first time they had ever had one, according to the CDC. For nearly a quarter (24%), it was their second abortion. For 10% of women, it was their third, and for 8% it was their fourth or higher. These CDC figures include data from 41 states and New York City (but not the rest of New York).
Nearly four-in-ten women who had abortions in 2020 (39%) had no previous live births at the time they had an abortion, according to the CDC.

🗣Anyone using a period tracker app needs to very strongly consider deleting it. Not now, but RIGHT NOW!
Tumblr media
Your personal data that is being collected can and has already been mined and sold to marketing firms and law enforcement. You don’t need to be Margaret Atwood to imagine who your private information might be sold to, or what period-tracking data might be used for in a Republican state, or in a conservative court of law.
I really hate to sound alarmist, but this is Christofascist America in 2022, please protect yourself and act accordingly.

Going to cautiously posit that if they're moving toward calling Kentucky for Beshear (incumbent Democratic governor) in a blindingly red state Trump won by 30 points, in an off-year election, about 30 minutes after polls close statewide, that is a Good Sign.

I changed colleges to study visual arts. dropped sociology after five years and being close to graduating, and yes it's as painful and humiliating as it sounds. but at this point if it swims like a duck (an artist) and quacks like a duck (an artist) the only thing left to do is to surrender to obvious destiny

the show : it's okay because ruby didn't actually die! she'll just come out of the tree like everyone else!
me : that? doesn't solve the actual underlying issue? it doesn't matter ruby won't actually die, the fact that she fully thought she would when drinking the tea & her suicidality are the pressing issues here, especially with a lack of a support system from her friends & the constant trauma she's been through the past 2 volumes alone.
the way this show has handled ruby & jaune's mental health rivals the god awfulness of 13 reasons why. & it'll be even worse if she does go through this magical tree bullshit & is cured from her suicidality because that's not how that fucking works. someone keep these blockhead writers away from these types of topics, they're butchering them to hell & back.

Enter American culture-war nonsense.
In Texas, they want to ban websites that explain how to get an abortion, as well as sites that ship the pills for a medication abortion. In Florida, they want to force bloggers who write about the state government to pay a fee and register with the state, prohibiting anonymous commentary about the state legislature and its actions. Florida has also required that online providers cease permitting their users to display pronouns other than the ones they were assigned at birth. Of course, online services have no way to know what pronouns any of their users were assigned at birth, so sites like Github are complying with Florida law by simply not displaying pronouns to Floridian users.
The biggest barrier to enforcing these laws is the US Constitution, which these laws assuredly violate. It’s entirely possible that a lower court will uphold these laws. It’s conceivable that an appeals court will do so as well. It’s not outside the realm of possibility that the current Supreme Court — illegitimately stacked with far-right partisan hacks lacking any shred of principle — will follow suit.
But it’s far from a sure thing. It’s not even clear whether the legislatures that passed these laws and the governors who signed them want them to be enforced. After all, if these policies do come into force, large numbers of corporations are likely to shutter their offices and move out of state (especially in Florida, an increasingly economic irrelevance for any business not engaged in selling soon-to-be-drowned condos and/or shitcoins).
For these cynical political operators, having their laws overturned by “activist judges” lets them eat their cake and have it too — they don’t have to alienate the business lobby, and they get a steady supply of red meat for their cruel base, driving voter turnout and donations from frightened bigots.
-They’re still trying to ban cryptography

States across the country have banned or restricted access to abortion following the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade last year. A new Illinois law will ensure police cannot use data from license plate readers to track people traveling into the state for reproductive healthcare.
Sponsors told reporters in June that some Republican-led states have used automatic license plate readers as a tool to hunt down people seeking abortion and other reproductive healthcare.
"We created an island on which every human being is recognized and given the dignity of controlling their own body and their own destiny," said Rep. Ann Williams (D-Chicago). "That includes people who are traveling into the state of Illinois to seek legal healthcare services."
The legislation prohibits sharing of data or allowing law enforcement to use the information to criminalize anyone coming into or out of Illinois for healthcare.
"We are not initiating laws simply for ideological purposes," said Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias. "The health and safety of individuals seeking critical reproductive healthcare is real and it's directly at stake."
House Bill 3326 also bans the use of data from license plate readers to detain people based on their immigration status.
The Secretary of State's office said police will still be allowed to use these cameras to look for suspects in violent crimes, carjackings, and auto theft. However, law enforcement will be required to sign an agreement noting that they will only use license plate readers for those reasons.
"We will continue to protect women and people not only with essential abortion care and reproductive care, but also gender affirming care," said Sen. Sara Feigenholtz (D-Chicago).
Giannoulias said no one deserves government intervention when they abide by laws and freedoms guaranteed in Illinois. The Democrat stressed that the automatic license plate readers need to be regulated to ensure people aren't criminalized for lawful behavior.
House Bill 3326 passed out of the House on a partisan 72-39 vote on May 10. The legislation later passed out of the Senate on a partisan 39-15 vote on May 19.
The new law takes effect on January 1, 2024.

[ This isn’t the kind of usual stuff I like to post but I feel like this is critical coming from teen who’s living in America at this moment. ]
To all my AFAB peeps living in the USA.
If you track your periods with a mobile app:
DELETE IMMEDIATELY!!
The data that’s gathered has been coincided and is benign used against anybody who’s looking for an abortion.

“The stark reality is that while cycle tracking apps can be useful, they also harbour serious privacy risks. Any[one] who uses a menstrual cycle tracking app could expose [them]self to the potential that [their] data might later be exploited to mount a case against [them] if [they] suffers a legitimate miscarriage.”

https://womensmentalhealth.org/posts/abortion-does-not-increase-womens-risk-for-suicide/
This article is quite confusing because they claim abortion didn't raise suicide attempts, but then say that nearly 3% of women attempted suicide after their abortion. They claim there wasn't an increase in attempts.
"Among the 48,990 women who had an abortion, 1402 (2·9%) had a first suicide attempt after an abortion. In this group of women, the risk for making a suicide attempt was the same during the year after the abortion as during the year prior to the abortion, confirming that having an aborton did not increase risk for suicide attempt." (I just realized they made a typo with "abortion").
So about 3% had a first suicide attempt after an abortion, but they claim they had the same risk of suicide attempts before? They claim the risk was the same, but three percent of those women actually attempted to take their own life after their first abortion. They also claim that they were just as suicidal before as they were afterward. So abortion did not improve their mental health immediately afterward, either. What factors were causing these women to be suicidal before their abortion? What factors were causing these women to be suicidal after their abortion? What was causing 3% of these women to actually attempt suicide for the first time after their abortion?
"While abortion itself did not increase risk for suicide attempt, the researchers did observe that, as a group, women who had an abortion had about a 2.5-fold higher risk of non-fatal suicide attempts compared to women who did not have an abortion.  This suggests that women seeking abortion are a vulnerable population, and that we need to provide additonal supports to this population." (They made another typo with the word "additional." Whoever wrote this did not proofread).
They say abortion did not increase the risk for suicide attempts and then immediately say the women who did have an abortion were 2.5 times more likely to attempt suicide compared to women who didn't have an abortion. Yes, women who seek abortions are more vulnerable and that's why emotional, financial and physical support for pregnant women is so important. This is why Crisis Pregnancy Centers and After Abortion support exists to help these vulnerable women.
I looked at the actual study they were talking about and it says in the conclusion: "We found that women who had abortions had a higher risk of non-fatal suicide attempts compared with women who did not have an abortion. However, because the increased risk was the same both the year before and after the abortion, it is not attributable to the abortion." How can the increased risk be the same the year before the abortion and the year after when they say there was a higher risk? They also don't even mention fatal suicide attempts at all, like my studies did. They only focused on first time abortions and first time non-fatal suicidal attempts. What about fatal? This study is inconclusive and doesn't really compare to my other studies I have linked because this one only focusses on first time abortion patients and first-time suicidal attempts. It excludes women who had suicidal attempts before and women who have had actually succeeded in their suicide attempt. And it even says they were about 3% more likely to actually attempt suicide the first time ever after having an abortion, and then they claim this didn't increase their risk for suicide. They did not include further suicide attempts women may have taken after their abortion since they were only focused on the first time attempt. I know it's trying to say that abortion wasn't the contributing factor, but how do they know that? To me this just shows that women who seek abortion need better support that they weren't receiving over there in Denmark.
I'm looking at the data in this study:
Tumblr media
Those who didn't have an abortion had a rate of first suicide attempt of 2.03 compared to those who within a year after abortion of 8.63. And those who gave birth had a first time suicide rate of 1.22, which is lower than every other category. Now this only accounts for first time attempts, and other suicide attempts could occur after the abortion that aren't included because they're not first time attempts.
One big problem I have with this study is they think the 2.5-fold isn't significant, but it means women after the abortion were 2.5 times more likely to attempt suicide. My studies include maternal deaths from suicide, while this one only includes non-fatal suicide attempts. It would be better if they also included fatal suicide attempts, as well.

U.S. Marshalls Spied on Abortion Protesters Using DATAMINR >
Twitter’s “official partner” monitored the precise time and location of post-Roe demonstrations, internal emails show.
DATAMINR, AN “OFFICIAL PARTNER” of Twitter, alerted a federal law enforcement agency to pro-abortion protests and rallies in the wake of the reversal of Roe v. Wade, according to documents obtained by The Intercept through a Freedom of Information Act request.
Internal emails show that the U.S. Marshals Service received regular alerts from Dataminr, a company that persistently monitors social media for corporate and government clients, about the precise time and location of both ongoing and planned abortion rights demonstrations. The emails show that Dataminr flagged the social media posts of protest organizers, participants, and bystanders, and leveraged Dataminr’s privileged access to the so-called firehose of unrestricted Twitter data to monitor constitutionally protected speech.
