SPIRITUALITY IN ISLAM: PART 15: ZUHD (ASCETİCİSM)

Asceticism, which literally means renouncing worldly pleasures and resisting carnal desires, is defined by Sufis as indifference to worldly appetites, living an austere life, choosing to refrain from sin in fear of God, and despising the world’s carnal and material aspects.

Asceticism is also described as renouncing this world’s temporary ease and comfort for the sake of eternal happiness in the Hereafter. The first step in asceticism is the intention to avoid what has been forbidden and to engage only in what has been allowed. The second and final step is being extremely careful even when engaging in what is allowed.

An ascetic is steadfast in fulfilling his or her responsibilities, is not defeated by misfortune, and who avoids the traps of sin and evil encountered during the journey.

With the exception of unbelief and misguidance, an ascetic is pleased with how the Creator decides to treat him or her, seeks to attain God’s pleasure and the eternal abode through the blessings and bounties the He bestows, and directs others to the absolute Truth. In the ear of his or her heart, the Divine announcement is echoed:

Say: The enjoyment of this world is short; and the Hereafter is better for him who obeys God’s commandments in fear of Him (4:77). The command:

Seek the abode of the Hereafter in that which God has given you, and forget not your portion of the world (28:77) radiates itself through all the cells of his or her brain. The Divine warning:

This life of the world is but a pastime and a game, but the home of the Hereafter, that is Life if they but knew (29:64) penetrates his or her innermost senses.

Some have described asceticism as observing the rules of Shari'a even in moments of depression and especially during financial difficulties, and living for others or considering their well-being and happiness while enjoying well-being and comfort. Others have defined it as thankfulness for God’s bounties and fulfilling the obligations that these bounties bring with them, and as refraining from hoarding money and goods (except for the intention to serve, exalt, and promote Islam).

Such renowned Sufi leaders as Sufyan al-Thawri regarded asceticism as the action of a heart set up according to God’s approval and pleasure and closed to worldly ambitions, rather than as being content with simple food and clothes.

According to these Sufis, there are three signs of a true ascetic: feeling no joy at worldly things acquired or grief over worldly things missed, feeling no pleasure when praised or displeasure when criticized or blamed, and preferring to serve God over every other thing.

Like fear and hope, asceticism is an action of the heart; however, asceticism differs in that it affects one’s acts and is displayed through them.

Whether consciously or unconsciously, a true ascetic tries to follow the rules of asceticism in all acts, such as eating and drinking, going to bed and getting up, talking and keeping silent, and remaining in retreat or with people. An ascetic shows no inclination toward worldly attractions. Rumi expresses this in the following apt words:

What is the world? It is heedlessness of God;

Not clothes, nor silver coin, nor children, nor women.

If you have worldly possessions in the name of God,

Then the Messenger said: How fine is the property a righteous man has!

The water in a ship causes it to sink,

While the water under it causes it to float.

Having worldly means or wealth are not contrary to asceticism if those who possess them can control them and are not overpowered by them.

Nevertheless, the glory of humanity, upon him be peace and blessings, the truest ascetic in all respects, chose to live as the poorest of his people, for he had to set the most excellent example for his community especially for those charged with propagating and promoting the truth. Thus, he would not lead others to think that the sacred mission of Prophethood could be abused to earn worldly advantage.

He also had to follow his predecessors, who proclaimed:

My reward is only due from God (10:72; 11:29),

and to set an example for those future scholars who would convey his Message. For these and similar other reasons, he led an austere life. How beautiful are the following couplets by Busayri, which express how the Prophet preserved his innocence and indifference even at the time of absolute need and poverty:

Not to feel hunger, he wound a girdle around his belly

Over the stones pressing upon his blessed stomach.

Huge mountains wishing themselves gold offered themselves to him,

But he that noble man remained indifferent to them.

His urgent needs decisively showed his asceticism,

For those needs were not able to impair his innocence.

How could needs have been able to invite to the world the one

But for whom the world would not have come into being out of non-existence?

There are many beautiful sayings on asceticism. The following, with which we conclude this topic, belongs to ‘Ali, the fourth Caliph and cousin of the Prophet, upon him be peace and blessings:

The soul weeps in desire of the world despite the fact that

It knows that salvation lies in renouncing it and what is in it.

A man will have no abode to dwell in after his death

Except that which he builds before he dies.

Our goods we hoard them to bequeath to heirs;

Our houses we build them to be ruined by time.

There are many towns built and then ruined;

Their builders death has come upon them.

Every soul even if it somehow fears death,

It cherishes ambitions to strengthen its desire to live.

Man exhibits his ambitions but time obliterates them;

Man’s soul multiplies them but death puts an end to them.

O God! Show us truth as true and enable us to follow it. Show us falsehood as false, and provide us with the means to refrain from it. Amen, O Most Compassionate of the Compassionate.

Unfortunately, our characters met in the monster hunting academy and are constantly in competition and trying to one-up the other even after graduation. Now they've been assigned on a mission together. Things go wrong and naturally one is blaming the other for it.

Seems like the royal house is in trouble. Rumors are spreading that the emperor/empress is a heretic who gained power by dealing with the devil. While some roll their eyes, others believe it's true. Not only do the families still hate each other and are in competition, but one is engaged in an arranged marriage deal while the family of the other is trying to play match-maker.

About the OC:

He is a biologically engineered human who was once created with the intention of being used a weapon of war upon maturity. But his creators decide to spare their successful creation and formulate a plan to save the human before the government is able to step in. 

The plot however will be set in present modern time, just as he reaches his 24th birthday. He knows little about his past but has managed to piece some notion of what his use was. He later learns there are others like him and that the government has initiated a hunt for his kind. 

I’m seeking a writing partner who perhaps bring on a oc that could serve as an interesting love interest but also a character that will help support the development of his humanness and emotions - as he seems to lack both in some ways. 

I’m eager to find someone with a unique perspective and capable of contributing their own style and ideas to this. Also, welcome the use of unconventional realistic muses for these characters, perhaps even would love a poc to play against my character, as I don't see that enough.  Of course I’ve established the appearance of my oc already and also have fleshed out more details on him and his bg that can be further discussed.

getting to know nagano yuna is a tricky thing. she's not shy. in fact, she loves meeting new people and getting someone talking, but once the dive into a conversation, the other person is quick to realize that she's someone who plays devil's advocate. not everyone has the energy for that, but it's something she loves to do. loves. she will almost always question your logic, and not because she doesn't agree with you or understand it, but she wants to test it; to test you. this is something that her mother taught her to do. she wants to see if there are any chips in a person's armor. if they tell the truth, or if they lie. if their mentality is strong. she uses communication in order to form hypotheses and investigate, all while her tone is sweet and high-pitched, and she bats her lashes at you. speaking of, it's easy for her to disarm people like this. yuna's a huge charmer. she puts effort into her appearance, curating an aesthetic that's highly feminine, even if a bit goth sometimes, and speaks in a manner that's delicate, but despite this, when the moment is perfect, she delivers the sickest burns and the funniest jokes. she's a natural. one of her favorite things to do is sit in the corner of a room with a friend, take in all the people, and break down who they are; even if she's never met them. she'll create huge stories about their lives just based on vibes and instinct, and they're often chaotic and hilarious. she has the capability of making a person feel quite small. instead of huge boisterous declarations of hate though, she's more the type to whisper something brutal in your ear—jabbing you right where it hurts, digging that knifepoint in seamlessly, then twisting it. nagano yuna is a switchblade. accurate, quick, sharp. she's intimidating, but only when you start chatting with her. more often than not, you'll see the cat ears, and the tail, and her carefully crafted outfits and feel endeared. her smiles are so sweet. when she looks at you, winks, and sticks her tongue out, it's so playful and cheeky. if you engage though, you'll quickly discover that she genuinely does not give a fuck about what you, or anyone else, thinks about her. this is scary. it means she'll speak her mind, no filter. yuna's morals are rather dubious. she's a thief, for fucks sake. however, if you're her friend, and she's loyal to you, she'll take care of you. it'll be in her own ways, but she'll look out for you; bring you things she's mopped from her latest heist; give you the best, most honest advice; slice and dice your exes with words (and her claws, if you want that); cuddle up to you for affection, but only on her terms; etc. she may act like a lioness, but deep down, she's really just a cat. that might tell you all you need to know.

Character Concept: Zealot Barbarian Worshipper of Khitim

As I was saying in my earlier post, I’ve been doodling character concepts for worshippers of my homebrew deities, and for Khitim, the neutral evil goddess of survival, I wanted a zealot barbarian. Because survival is Khitim’s first and only law, and ‘I want to live’ is the prayer she answers.

And I was on 5e tools (shh) browsing backgrounds, and there’s a new one from The Book of Many Things called ‘Ruined’, which is where you lost everything, and survived, and it’s shaped you. You get stealth and survival proficiencies, and you get your choice of the Alert, Skilled or Tough feats, depending on how you reacted to your loss. My tabaxi will be taking ‘alert’. She’s never going to be caught off guard again. She’s going to live, and fuck everyone who says different.

So. Kit Rawbone, a lean, scarred tabaxi barbarian, who lost her family to greed and desperation in extremis, and was meant to die herself, and just isn’t going to. Ever. Fuck you. The people who left her and her family to die were living by Khitim’s edicts when they did so, but so does she. She lives by them too, and honestly, she thinks Khitim likes her better. The Lady of the Tooth gave her claws and rage and a burning need to stay alive, and she’s willing to bet she’s better at it than most of you.

Description: A lean, scarred, grey-furred tabaxi with a typically mild, non-committal expression.

Personality: Angry, cynical, determined, maybe the tiniest bit paranoid.

History: My family were part of a travelling caravan of entertainers, a very popular and generally well-received one. Oh, there were always the odd folk who just couldn’t stand strangers hanging around, and who grumbled about riff-raff and thieves, but the class of our show and our friendliness and willingness to pitch in where needed usually outweighed that. Until.

When I was sixteen, we were wintering at a village in the mountains, and the passes had been snowed closed by winter storms. This wasn’t unusual, and wouldn’t normally have been a problem. Everyone who lives in or regularly travels the mountains was used to this. But this year, there was a problem. I still don’t remember who found it or how, but something had blighted a huge portion of the village’s stores. Rotted and spoiled them in the cellars and granaries. Abruptly, in the middle of winter, with no way back down the mountains, we all found ourselves abruptly facing the prospect of a winter without food. And, in such circumstances, relations tend to abruptly become very strained.

We were accused of blighting the stores, of course. My uncle, our spokesman, argued fairly bluntly that that would be an extremely stupid thing to do when we were also in the village and also needed to eat. Some of the ire died down, but others still nursed the thought that we’d done it, that we hadn’t expected the snowstorm, that we’d meant to be away and down by the time the crime was discovered, leaving the village to die behind us. I still don’t know why they thought we’d do that, but the rumblings and mutterings continued. But then. More basic than that. Whether we’d done wrong or not. As the snows kept piling, and the few remaining supplies kept dwindling, the coldest, most basic reasoning of all took sway.

We were strangers. We had no claim to their food. Why should they feed us, when they didn’t have enough to feed themselves?

I can’t remember how long it took to get to that point. Over a week, I think. I have memories of several endless cold nights huddled in our wagons behind the inn. Days of suspicion and sneers. But I can’t remember exactly how long it took. It took, though. It got there in the end.

We were travellers, and thieves, and sorcerers who’d blighted their food. There was no evil in driving us out. There was no food. Yes, it was death to send anyone out into the blizzard, but it was death to stay and starve, too. Everyone for themselves, no? So. We were offered a choice. Leave, now, on foot, with whatever we could carry on our backs. Or they would burn us alive in our wagons in the night. On foot, you understand. Leave the wagons. Our gear. Our homes. All that we owned and loved in the world. Leave it all. A tithe, for the food we had spoiled. Run, with nothing, into the depths of winter. Or they would kill us where we stood.

Sometimes I think we should have taken the latter option. It would have been faster, at least. And we might have taken some of them with us.

We lost each other, in the snow. Or I lost them, at least. My family. I got separated. I don’t know how long I wandered. But I know two things.

I know my younger sister died. I found her body, while I was half-blind and crawling, frozen in the snow. I never found anyone else, alive or dead, but I found her. I know she died.

And I know they burned our wagons anyway. Because I circled, somehow, back around to the village. Lost in the snow. I circled around. And I saw the light. The fire. They looted our wagons, and then they burned them. All that I loved. My home for sixteen years. They burned them.

Rage burned in me then, in that moment. A rage so incandescent, I felt altered. Hollow. Near-divine. Hunger gnawed in my gut. My claws blackened in the cold. I wanted to eat them. Those villagers. Those vicious, horrible, hollow monsters. But I wanted something else more. I wanted to live. To spite them. They’d sent us out to die, and so I wanted to live. I wanted to live forever.

There’s a goddess. You don’t hear her talked about too much. Just on the edges. The hard lands. All those places where death lurks just a little beyond the boundaries, and ruin is only ever one disaster, one unlucky moment away. Her name is Khitim, the Lady of the Tooth. And she says to people, survive. Kill, plunder, eat. Whatever you have to do, you survive. You live.

They were listening to her, those villagers, when they drove us away to die. They lived by her words that day. But so did I. So did I. And so do I still.

I made it down off that mountain. I snuck into that village, and I stole all that I could carry, all of their precious dwindling supply that I could reach and take, and I made it down off that fucking mountain. Maybe some of them died because of what I did, what I stole. I don’t give a flying fuck. My sister died for them. Maybe my whole family. I don’t give a good godsdamn how many of them died. I do know the village never recovered. It’s barely there anymore, a hamlet, nowhere near enough to earn a travelling show’s stop over. But that doesn’t matter. None of it matters now. What matters is, they didn’t kill me. What matters is, I didn’t die.

And I’ve no intention of ever starting now.

Ideal: Live. Just to spite them all. Live.

Bond: It’s been twelve years, but I do still hope someone else from my family survived that horrible mountain. I try to look for them, when I can.

Flaw: Everyone looks after themselves first and foremost. They might say they don’t, they might even believe they don’t, but when it comes down to who lives and who dies, don’t ever expect anyone to make a different choice. Help while you can, sure. But when it comes down to it, help yourself first.
