In my attempts to be more positive I'm not gonna go too deep into this, but I was informed about a story idea from one of the Batgirls writers that on the surface was so racially insensitive and only speaks so loudly to the blind spot white writers, even if they have good intentions and/or don't consider themselves racist, have when it comes to writing diverse characters (this also applies when men write women, straight cis people write LGBTQ+ characters etc.)
There's a lack of authenticity regardless which most get away with cause they just write a character to be a character and the race or gender or sexual orientation is either not important or vital for plot reasons so it's not the focus as white writers love to say "I don't want them to only be seen for *that*", but often times when a diverse writer is given a chance to write the same character aspects of their own journey and understanding and connection bleeds through in the writing and there's a different tangible understanding within the character that just helps make them feel real. Miles Morales shouldn't be known as the Afro-Latino Spider-Man, but him being Afro-Latino is an important part of who he is so ignoring that is doing him a disservice. Barbara Gordon's disability being invisible/good day bad day takes away the responsibility from abled bodied writers to make her disability a constant visible part of who she is, that's why they did it. Yes those types of disabilities exist (Cass has an invisible disability) and deserve to be showcased, but the want for Babsgirl and Oracle and attempts to please both fandoms at the expense of Barbara Gordon's character, what her disability meant to those fans, and what Oracle represents as a superhero is wrong. (Read The Oracle Code and Shadow of the Batgirl btw)
Another example that I noticed was when Riri aka Ironheart first came into the scene written by Bendis. People HATED her. It wasn't until Eve Ewing began writing her in the Ironheart solo (which if you haven't read you should) that people started to come around on the character. Ewing provided a life and heart to Riri and her world that felt specific to the black woman experience, but unique to Riri and yet universally understood for the reader.
It's something I want for Cassandra Cain and why I continue to ask for an Asian writer to write her. Shadow of the Batgirl from Kuhn and the small stories and cameos we've seen from Tamaki and Wong have given Cass a great voice that I'm not getting from Batgirls. Cass as a character is different now for better or worse. I would've preferred we got the full journey of her learning to speak with Babs on panel, (and even then I think her voice pattern should be more unique) but that's whatever. I won't go more into as I said I'm not gonna shit on Batgirls anymore this year, and that's not what this is. This is just a reminder to myself that no matter how good a writer is, they all have blind spots. We can connect to characters that aren't like us, we can write characters that aren't like us, but we can't forget that they aren't us. And we should champion and hope more writers get opportunities to showcase why diversity is an important part of who these characters are and shouldn't be ignored or sidelined for fear of it being *all* they are.

Ive got a bit of a talented at the arts batfamily brainrot so here’s Anastasia (aka my favorite musical) casted by (mostly gotham based) DC characters based on my person hcs which i will not be elaborating on.
Btw this was basically done like actual casting where the ages and logic of it all wasnt really taken into consideration. But if anyone wants to see that ive got some things in mind. Its not supposed to be AU tho, im literally thinking of the characters themselves putting ok the musical.
The guy who complains at the very beginning of “Rumor in St. Petersburg” - Conner Kent
Anastasia- Cassie Sandmark
Dimitry- Dick Grayson
Gleb- Jason Todd
Vladmir- Tim Drake
Lily- Stephanie Brown
The Czar- Duke Thomas
Odette- Cassandra Cain/Wayne
Prince Siegfried- Damian Wayne (look ik they’re technically in love but its a short ballet scene and in my head damian is a ballet dancer)
(Bonus: Little Anya- Lian Harper
Alexei- Billy Batson)
