Sneaking into School

A/N: First time posting one of my fics to tumblr. I've usually posted on fanfiction.net (back when that was a thing) and more recently on AO3. Hope you enjoy! :)

Summary: This is what I wish had happened when SEES sneaks into school to find Fuuka. Any chance to show Akihiko as an awkward oblivious idiot.

“First, we have to find the key to the gym.” Everyone nodded their heads in agreement, “We'll split up into two groups and meet in the main hallway on the first floor. Understood?”

“Which places are we checking out?”

“The Janitor's room and the Faculty office.”

“The Faculty office, huh?” Junpei begins to grin with eagerness. “Hey, maybe we'll find some test questions!”

Upon hearing his statement, a mischievous smirk starts forming on Mitsuru’s features. “Are you planning something unscrupulous under my supervision? If so, then expect to be severely punished...” Despite the smirk, there was something about the glint in Mitsuru’s eyes that made Kotone pause.

Kotone nervously glanced to Junpei, “I don't think she's kidding, Junpei-kun.”

The said boy's eyes got wide in fear, stammering as he thought of the consequences he could be facing, “It-it was a joke! I'd never do something like that!” He began to laugh nervously, but Student Council President did not appear reassured.

“...Perhaps I'd best take Iori with me to the janitor's room.” Mitsuru slowly turned to Kotone, the female leader that's been leading them thus far in Tartarus battle, “Shiomi, head to the faculty office. I'll leave it to you to choose who to take along with you.”

“I'll go with Shiomi.”

Because of Yukari's fear of ghosts and being alone, it seemed reasonable to leave her with the larger group. Sanada Akihiko had much experience in battle before, so Mitsuru approved Akihiko's request to accompany the recent transfer student to the faculty office.

It's not that it bothered Kotone or anything. It simply surprised her that Akihiko suggested such a thing.

Mitsuru had left the decision up to her, but Akihiko seemed to almost jump at the opportunity. Kotone’s mind couldn’t stop the racing thought that maybe he had wanted to be alone with her. She had a strong urge to confirm his reasoning.

“Um... Akihiko-senpai?” The second-year called out, still following after the senior toward the opposite hallway they came from.

“What is it?” He responded curtly, still walking ahead.

“Why did you---”

“Sh!” Akihiko had suddenly stopped in mid-step, halting any sound from coming out of her mouth with a raised hand. “Do you hear that?”

Kotone listened: the sound of footsteps could be heard distinctly in the distance. The footsteps sounded as if they were coming closer to the pair.

“Who would be here at this time of night?” Akihiko asked quietly to himself, urgency evident on his face. “Hurry, behind the pillar!” The silver-haired senior grabbed Kotone by the arm, pulling her behind a pillar with him.

Kotone’s cheeks reddened ever so mildly. “Um... Senpai--”

“Sh!” Akihiko hushed, swiftly covering her mouth with his right hand and effectively cutting off any more words escaping past her lips.

Akihiko had shoved the poor girl against one of the pillars, her back against the frigid stone. He was leaning in close to her, attempting to fit their bodies within the width of the column. His hand remained over her lips as he stealthily observed the shadowy figure of a security guard coming closer to their pillar, a flashlight in hand. The security guard stopped a moment, flashed in arbitrary directions around the room before moving in the direction toward the opposite hallway, where the pair had come from previously.

Akihiko continued to have his fingerless gloved hand cover her mouth as he still heard the heavy footsteps of the security guard.

Kotone looked up to her senpai, hoping Akihiko couldn’t feel the warmth emanating from her embarrassed red cheeks. She practically begged in her mind for Akihiko not to look down and see how incredibly bright her cheeks were. She had never told him, but she admired him: his passion to get stronger to protect his loved ones, his passion to continue fighting and his determination that never seemed to fade. She couldn't deny the fact that she had developed a sort of school-girl crush, but she knew that he wouldn't give her the time for her... at least not yet. She wanted to prove herself worth of his affection.

But being in close proximity with him made her heart race.

She could smell his scent, faint as it was during this time: the smell of persimmons. Probably from his club activities, always training around the persimmon tree at the school.

She stayed as still as a rock until she couldn't hear any trace of sound from the hallway the security guard had just entered.

When the main lobby and the hallways became completely quiet once again, Akihiko let out a sigh of relief and looked down to his companion at the same time as she looked up at him again.

Their eyes locked, and Kotone swore she could hear a clock ticking in the distance with how long they had been staring at each other.

When Akihiko finally realized that he still had his hand clamped over her mouth and the proximity of him leaning over her, he hurriedly took a step back, swiftly followed by his hand that had been covering her mouth. Kotone could tell he was embarrassed as he averted his gaze from hers, “S-sorry about that. I didn't mean to be so pushy.”

“D-don't worry about it... Let's just go,” Kotone suggested, leading the way to the faculty office, leaving her question of the groups to herself for the time being.

Akihiko looked after her with mild surprise at her behavior, “...Right.”

"No need to thank me like that, leader." He let out an awkward, bashful chuckle while rubbing his cheek where a pair of lips met. He only offered to carry her heavy shopping bags all the way to the dorm, and it was a shame that he couldn't run to the train station because he would ruin everything in there.

"Still, I'm curious about what kind of stuff you bought. Is it equipment for our next training night or something else?" Maybe it was for a girls' night- he's heard so much about them from many female classmates.

- The next several weeks after kinda resolving some issues with your brother you spent with him and his friends. - They did all they could to make you feel better, and several attempts were made to support you in being even a little more open towards others. Mostly by Umemiya. - Although feeling awkward receiving their kindness and help, you still tried your best for Haruka. - You really wanted to make it up to him, he wasn't the one to blame for your bad choices of friends and you knew that you caused him a lot of harm by cutting him off so suddenly. - The two of you were very stiff and nervous during your sibling times and you would barely get closer, if it weren't for Nirei and Suou. They were so persistent and reliable in connecting you and your brother. - After all this help, you hesitated but finally decided and told Haruka and the Bofurin members that during your free time you could, once again very reluctantly, help them out and the townsfolks.

- You were helping out by painting the walls, with some of the guys, being Umemiya, Sugishita, and Mitsuki. - You secretly listened to the oldest boy talking with Mitsuki about some farming game, where you could also befriend other farmers. You'd lie saying that it didn't brighten up your day even a little. - You got to know that Umemiya was actually quite cool, if he didn't talk to you that much, so you appreciated Mitsuki for taking his attention. - Next thing you knew the old man came from around the corner with a young man who seemed very familiar, too familiar. - He called you and said that the man said he knew you and wanted to talk with you. You took a few steps in their direction before stopping, as you recognized him. - You immediately froze and felt a shiver ran through you. It was the bastard, you called your ex. - Sugishita noticing you getting anxious came in front of you hiding you from the men. - Your ex seeing that told you and the other guys that he just wanted to talk to you, and that it was something important that wouldn't take long. - Why did you agree, you're not sure. Maybe you wanted to look cool in front of the Bofurin members, or maybe you just didn't want to look pathetic. However, it was a big mistake because after following him to some back street you were greeted by other people, that you once called "friends". - At the same time Umemiya had a bad feeling and told Mitsuki to get Haruka and inform him about this.

- Someone grabbed your shirt pulling you roughly towards the group and then pushing you to the wall making your head hit the bricks. - You felt disoriented as you tried to keep standing. - "How did a trash like you think it could get away from us?" - "Do you think you're better because you have some new pitiful friends?" - The bastards from your school asked and you gritted your teeth putting on a front. - "Funny, thought you were the trash." You replied bitterly. - "Oh, right at least I don't need to exploit others to feel better, unlike you." - They certainly didn't appreciate you talking back and one of the girls took their glass bottle before throwing it at you. - At the last second you moved away looking at the broken glass and then back to them. - "You're fuckin' sick." You said and your ex gritted his teeth before coming closer to you. - He was the first one to lose patience and brought his fist back ready to punch you. - You were too startled by the previous attack to react quick enough but you didn't have. Haruka came out of nowhere and grabbed his fist before kicking him in the stomach. Still holding his hand he pulled him closer and punched him in the face. A loud crack was heard. Your brother then followed with another kick in the chest but this time he let go of his hand letting him fall back into some of your old friends. - You were startled by this but when you saw the back of your younger brother you felt like the weight was lifted off your shoulders. - Then you heard more voices from behind and when you turned you noticed other Bofurin members ready to throw hands if needed. - You felt like crying. They all came because they were worried for you and wanted to protect you. - The strange feeling of being taken care of and protected filled you and you wondered if that's what family and friends were like.

- When you were having a small emotional moment, Haruka was seething. He stood in front of the people who took his older sister away from him, people that made her life miserable. His fists tightened and he was more than ready to have a talk with them. Just like Umemiya taught him.

- After the guys left you and Bofurin members alone, scrambling and picking up your ex who was hurt the most. - You felt tears brimming in your eyes. - When you looked up from the ground and saw Haruka in the middle of his friends getting praised for fighting so well, your tears fell down. - You were so moved and so thankful for having them by you, for them letting you be part of their lives, for Haruka protecting you, for everything. - Kaji was the first one to notice you were crying, as he stood more on the sides of the group crowding around your brother. He came to you and gave you a tissue he had in his pocket. - When the rest saw he stood by you and noted you were crying they moved quickly around you asking if you were alright or if something happened. - "I just feel so happy to have you guys. You're the best." You said teary. - The guys sighed in relief and when Haruka scoffed, in relief, he stepped to you and smacked your shoulders. - "Don't worry me like that." He mumbled. - You pulled him, who was trying to run from you, closer and embraced him tightly feeling thankful for having your younger brother back in your life. - Umemiya seeing that couldn't help himself and brought the other guys closer for a group hug, smashing you all together.

our little secret

pairing: shinjiro aragaki x gn!reader

summary: while shinjiro shows off his new tattoo, he accidentally lets it slip to the others that you've got a tattoo of your own. a very well hidden one, that he shouldn't even know about…

“did it hurt?”

the residents of the iwatodai dormitory were gathered around shinjiro, who begrudgingly let them admire the new tattoo he got. he sat there, keeping his mouth shut and only answering when asked something.

“no, not really…”

shinjiro kept his answers brief, trying to cut the talking short and take the first opportunity presented to him to retreat back to his room. but whether it was fuuka asking one question after another about his tattoo, akihiko and mitsuru scolding him for ruining his body with all that ink or junpei who told him how cool he looked, they all just wouldn't stop talking to him. 

“it looks really dope! next time we should get a tattoo together, shinji!”

junpei playfully bumped shinjiro's arm with his fist, trying to get the boy to agree to take him with him the next time. 

“don't encourage him to get another one, junpei!” you chimed in. “shinji already got enough tattoos! a body covered in tattoos doesn't look good…” 

“ha, says the one with the heart tattoo!”

shinjiro cocked up his eyebrows and glanced over at you, giving you a knowing glance. just because he had a few more tattoos didn't mean you two weren't in the same boat. 

“wait, you've got a tattoo? where?”

shinjiro's comment seemed to have sparked the curiosity of your friends. especially mitsuru and akihiko seemed quite surprised that you had one, since you seemed to share their views on the topic. only one other person in the room knew about that tattoo of yours, since you told her about it once… 

“how do you know about that tattoo, shinjiro? it's pretty well hidden…”

yukari's face was slightly flushed as she asked that question, as she seemingly seemed to know the answer already. she knew exactly where that tattoo was, since you told her about it. and she knew that it was nearly impossible to see it by chance…

the others slowly started to turn their heads, looking at each other and trying to see if anyone else understood what was going on. slowly, the wheels in their head began to turn. and then, one after another, they began to realize what yukari must be thinking right now. 

“wait, don't tell me…”

mitsuru was the first one who said something, but quickly cut herself short, as her cheeks began to burn up as well. a look at shinjiro and you was enough to see that her theory was correct. those flushed cheeks and that awkward smile on your lips gave you two away…

“alright, i won't tell then…”

shinjiro was more than happy not to go into detail about the sort of relationship he had with you. and you didn't need the whole team to know what you two were doing alone at night in his room. or your room. and occasionally even in the lounge, if nobody was around…

One strength I give to Persona 3's narrative is how consistently the tension of their situation causes group conflict when compared to Persona 4 and Persona 5. Not bickering or bantering. All the games have that in spades.

No I mean real conflict that has a longer period of resolution, that creates a real rift between characters, and is a point of genuine conflict. My favorite of the bunch, Persona 4, has a very compelling single moment like this (Namatame's fate) and Persona 5 has, in my opinion, a very awkward one (Morganna and Ryuji's spat). Though I suppose if you count the initial encounters with Makoto, that would make two. (The Makoto example I take no issue with)

Persona 3 however features a number of actual simultaneous conflicts, that progress and find conclusion throughout the story: Yukari's concerns about Mitsuru's leadership style, Junpei's sense of inferiority towards the main character, the ongoing dialogue between Shinjiro and Akihiko, Ken and Akihiko's unfinished business, etc.

No real thoughts beyond this really. Just wanted to say that I appreciate Persona 3 for this. It is my least favorite of the three modern Persona titles but I still enjoy it very much and I still like to appreciate it's stronger points.

Holding On and Letting Go

After a long afternoon of studying in the school library (not his preferred activity, but Mitsuru had insisted after seeing his most recent exam scores) and an evening at the local boxing gym, Akihiko returns to the Iwatodai Dormitory. Having eaten on the way home from the gym, all he wants to do is brush his teeth and go to sleep.

Then he sees Makoto passed out in the dorm lounge, slumped in one of the luxurious chairs, the book he’d been reading now resting against his thigh. All those late nights cramming for exams or storming ever higher floors of Tartarus had finally caught up to him.

Deciding to wake Makoto up before Junpei finds him and does something stupid, Akihiko makes his way past the couch and table to stand over his slumbering friend. He had never paid Makoto much attention outside of Tartarus, but in sleep, the blue-haired boy looked much more fragile than his combat prowess would suggest. Aki had seen him cut down monsters twice his size, and if Takeba was to be believed, he'd beaten up three men at once with his bare hands. Yet in that moment, Aki can only compare him to his late sister Miki. He taps Makoto’s shoulder gently, but that fails to wake him.

Akihiko considers raising his voice, or even shaking Makoto awake. He can’t just leave him napping in a chair; his back would pay for that. But Makoto looks so serene that he can’t bring himself to interrupt his sleep either. The only option left is to carry him back to his room.

Sliding his arms under Makoto’s knees and back, Aki lifts him from the chair.

"C'mon, Leader,” he says. “Let's get you to bed."

When Akihiko shifts his arms underneath Makoto, the shorter boy mumbles something unintelligible and wraps his arms around Aki. He's holding on so tight, like he expects to be dropped at any moment, but Akihiko doesn’t take it as a slight to his strength. Once your home has been ripped away from you without warning, it’s hard to ever feel safe again.

After a slow, careful journey upstairs and down the hall, the two reach Makoto’s room. The door doesn’t lock, so Akihiko is able to awkwardly grab the handle and open it without disturbing his sleeping friend much. He carries him straight to bed and lowers him towards the sheets.

“Down you go,” he whispers, but Makoto won’t let go of him.

“Dad…” he whimpers, clinging tighter. “Don’t go…”

Aki lifts Makoto back up at once, holding him even tighter than before. “It’s okay,” he says. “I’m not going anywhere.” The words feel so awkward, a lie of omission he’s not skilled enough to tell convincingly, but his firm grip is soothing enough to compensate.

It takes almost a minute for Makoto to let go of him, but Aki doesn’t mind. Miki was the same way.

Once his friend is tucked into bed, Akihiko turns to leave, but the moment feels incomplete. There must be something he could do, if only he were socially savvy enough to realize what.

Feeling defeated, he makes his way out. He’s just about to close the door when it hits him.

"Good night, Leader." Akihiko sweeps Makoto’s fringe out of the way and kisses him on the forehead. As he stands up to leave, he sees a gentle smile on his friend’s face.

"Sweet dreams…”

Akhiko can’t remember a single time when the silence between them felt so awkward. 

Tense, sure– especially recently. But never like this.

Akihiko wonders if Shinji can tell just how frustrated he’s getting. Probably; they’ve always been able to read each other pretty well, Shinji especially– with the uncanny talent of getting even better at it whenever Akihiko particularly doesn’t want to be read.

Dammit, this is not how he’d wanted this to go. This isn’t how he wants to feel while talking to Shinji after facing the uncertainty of whether he’d ever get the chance to again. Why the hell is it happening this way? Why can’t things just make sense? 

With all the knowledge Akihiko has now, things feel too different. The fact that Shinji had kept quiet about all of it just makes it even worse, and he doesn’t even have the decency to be apologetic about it. It’s like he doesn’t even care that he could still drop dead at any given moment, despite all they’ve been through. Like it doesn’t matter to him at all what that would do to the rest of the team, to Mitsuru, to Akihiko–

It’s ridiculous. It’s infuriating.

Akihiko takes a deep breath in and out through his nose in a way he hopes is subtle enough to go unnoticed. He needs to change the topic again.

Akihiko groans. Of course. Of course that’s the first thing Shinji remembers. Why on earth should he have expected his luck to be any less terrible than that? As if he didn’t feel shitty enough.

He doesn’t sound sorry in the least. Fresh, caustic heat flares in Akihiko’s chest. The last thread of his self-control is getting more and more taut and frayed, and one stray spark really will make it snap. He can’t hide how high his temper is rising anymore, even if he could still be bothered to.

One stray spark. Akihiko surges up to stand, fists clenched at his sides and shaking with fury.

Shinji blinks at him, slack-jawed and stunned, and Akihiko is torn between an ugly sort of satisfaction and feeling even more infuriated, because how the hell could any of this come as a shock to him? Isn’t this exactly what Shinji’s been goading him on to since the moment Akihiko walked through the door this morning?

Since long, long before then– Shinji’s been pushing and prodding and herding him towards this cliff since the moment he walked out of the dorm with no intention of ever coming back, and now he has the audacity to act surprised that Akihiko’s gone over the edge?

“What do you think would’ve happened if Amada had actually killed you, huh? Did you really think he’d be just fine after that? Did you think that would’ve solved anything? That it would be anything other than taking the easy way out?

“I never would have thought you could be that much of a coward,” Akihiko sneers, venomous. Poison for poison, repaying what Shinji had spat out like a cobra a month ago. Shinji winces and looks away, but he remains silent.

Good, because Akihiko isn’t nearly finished. “And did you even stop to think for one second about the people who give a shit about you? About what it would do to us if you just went off and died without saying a word?!”

“Aki–” Something odd has crept into Shinji’s expression, but Akihiko steamrolls over it, too caught up in his own vehement momentum to spare a thought for curious inconsistencies. Blood roars in his ears and his throat singes and stings.

“What would I have told Miki if you went out like that? Were you fine with breaking your promise to her too? Is that it?!”

“Aki.”

“Because you’ve gotten so good at that, haven’t you? Going back on your word, leaving people behind–”

“Aki.”

Shinji barely raises his voice, but it still cuts right through Akihiko’s even though he’s practically shouting at this point. It’s only now that it dawns on Akihiko how loud he was being. Just like that, all of his anger snuffs out, so suddenly that it leaves him dizzy and cold.

Dizzy, and cold, and ill– every malignant word of his tirade echoes punishingly around his skull. The blood drains from his face.

“I– Shinji, I’m–” His voice has gone thin and shivery. “I’m sorry. I didn’t–”

“Don’t be sorry,” Shinji replies quietly, not looking at him. “The only reason I stopped you was ‘cause I don’t want them to kick you out.”

Akihiko can hardly wrap his head around what Shinji’s saying. He has every right to want to get rid of Akihiko by any means necessary after all of that. He should want to, why wouldn’t he want to–

God, and for him to bring Miki into it? Akihiko’s never felt so ashamed in his life. Using her memory as a weapon– what kind of person does that?

Akihiko wants to tear into his hair in frustration– at Shinji, at himself, at everything. He wants to climb right out of his skin. “I shouldn’t have said any of–”

“Yeah, you should have.” Shinji locks his gaze pointedly to Akihiko’s. “You needed to say it, and–” His eyes slide away again. “...and I think I needed to hear it.”

Akihiko collapses back into the chair, slumping forward over his knees. “Why aren’t you angry?” The question is pleading, almost desperate.” I– I was awful to you just now.” 

“You weren’t wrong, though. Not like I didn’t earn pretty much all of it.” Shinji laughs– laughs– and Akihiko feels like he’s going to be sick. “‘Sides, it…sounded like that’s been building up for a while.”

What is he supposed to say? What can he say?

Nothing. That’d be best.

He’s already said enough.

It's rather cute, the way he pays attention to everything you do. The tiniest lift to your lips as you pass a few strangers by, amused by something they said that he didn't quite hear. The way you simply look upon the world has him so noticeably enamored, it's enough to get Mitsuru chuckling.

He doesn't realize what he's feeling at first, but once he does he's scared about doing something wrong. Relationships aren't really his forte. Especially romantic ones. But he's sure as hell going to try.

He pays attention to what you like, but sometimes gets it wrong. Junpei leads him astray here and there with his typical How to Get Partner 101(even though he means well). Aki tries getting physically closer and complimenting you, but it honestly just feels stiff and wrong to him. So he ends up just being himself, letting things happen naturally rather than forcing himself into something that doesn't work.

He gets you snacks sometimes, some from the vending machines or from the school's vendor. Occasionally, he'll invite you out to have ramen with him at Hagakure as well. Most of the time he just hangs around you more. Checking up on you and making sure you're alright, that sort of thing. But he also just enjoys spending time with you, even if you're doing separate things.

One of the things that's most obvious about Akihiko is that he always protects those around him- even more so if he's close to them. He'll walk on the side of the road whenever you two are on a sidewalk and tug you out of the way from a rushing passerby or cyclist.

If you're part of SEES you'll see it more clearly. He'll tug you away from attacks in battle or hop in front of you to counter an attack that'd otherwise knock you down. He's vigilant with making sure to step in front of you when danger arises. Or pulling you away. Though he tries not to since he does have a hard time measuring his strength.

A part of him is scared. That maybe he's reading his feelings wrong or maybe you aren't interested in guys at all. That if he says something about it he might ruin the friendship you both have and make it awkward.

So he ruminates. Thinking about how he'll say it or if he should even say it in first place. It almost feels like he's constantly teetering on the edge of just letting everything spill from his lips. That he's on the verge of telling you all of it until he can't breathe anymore.

The way he's always one moment away from telling you is enough to make him realize that his feelings are right.

He likes you.

All he has to do is say it.

Persona 3 Characters Ranked By How Good of Hugs They Give

kotone/hamuko/minako. best hugger in sees. she's a hashtag empath, so she always knows when you need a hug, too. will tug your head down to rest on her shoulder and start rubbing your back and everything. the technique? perfect. 10/10 no notes.

shinjiro. he's a lot less likely to hug anyone but aki, but when he does, it's big ol bear hug and he's not letting go until they feel better, period. he feels slightly awkward about it, but once he's holding on, he's committed. he's got that weighted blanket swag. (he doesn't smell the best though which holds him back from first place)

ryoji. hug will be a bit awkward at first but then he'll find his stride and suddenly he's a good hugger for all the same reasons as kotone. he had to get it from somewhere, after all. loses some points because he can be a little overly familiar, so he might employ back-rubbing in situations where it's unneeded.

fuuka. she's a little shy and less likely to hug, but if she does, she'll do it with all her heart!! a very gentle hugger who will try to console you as you're hugging. she might also start crying if things get emotional tbh but she won't get your shirt too wet. she also isn't likely to let go until you're smiling again.

aigis. she may be made of metal but i think we know from the ending of the game that she will cradle her loved ones so gently and with all the love and protection in her whole body <3 probably hugs a little tentatively because she doesn't want to crush the recipient of her hug. she's surprisingly warm, not cold, and her arms are less rigid than you would think.

i HAD to put koromaru this low because he technically can't hug you. but you can hug HIM and he is soft and warm and loves you so much.

yukari. she has good hugging technique, like fuuka's, but she's much more hesitant to actually hug and is more likely to pull away prematurely because she suddenly gets bashful. if someone else hugs her, she might even freeze up rather than hugging back, even if she wants to. her mind is racing with other thoughts as they hug, which makes her hug a little awkward and distracted.

theodore. gives an excellent gentle hug but he has no idea what to do next. he'll just stand there totally still indefinitely, and you have to kick him to get him to let you go.

elizabeth. hugs very enthusiastically but she will be saying some weird eccentric shit into your ear while you're trying to enjoy the hug. you could be on the verge of tears and she'd be like "oh my, is this what you humans call a 'bear hug'? should i summon a bear persona? ohohoho."

akihiko. he will hug with reckless abandon, but he is very awkward about it and hugs way too tight. like, a firm hug is nice and all, but akihiko please i cant breathe you'rE CRUSHING ME AKIHIKO--COUGH COUGH HACK--

minato/makoto. very stiff and wooden while he hugs you, so the hugging technique itself is pretty poor, but he has good awareness of when a hug is and isn't necessary and knows exactly when to squeeze a little and pull back. a quiet, slightly awkward hug.

ken. would be higher up on this list if he could just accept that he is Small but whenever he hugs someone he has to attempt to hug them in a Big Boy way which means he'll be trying to pull you down so he can hug you from "above", like with your head on his shoulder, and your back is gonna hurt like hell afterwards because he is just way too short.

junpei. gets self conscious and jerks away in the middle of a hug, just like yukari, but his technique is also awkward and wooden like minato, and if he's emotional enough to hug without feeling awkward then he'll be squeezing too tight like akihiko. worst of all worlds.

mitsuru. oh god. you're hugging her. why are you hugging her. what does she do with her arms. where should her face be. oh my god you're still holding on. are you saying something? she is not listening. she is too busy standing completely still like you're a t-rex whose vision is based on movement and if she just stays perfectly still you'll forget she's there and wander off.

He’d had a huge crush on the girl in his math class, she was way out of his league; her name was Keiko, nicknamed KiKi by all of her friends. Akihiko, being an awkward 15 year old had used his computer coding knowledge to his advantage. He’d made a dating sim with an anime-girlish main character based around his crush, named KiKi. Slowly but surely, the ai started to become strangely sentient; almost obsessed with her maker. The dating sim had prepared Akihiko to actually confess, Keiko surprisingly saying yes. Akihiko stopped using the sim, inviting his new girlfriend over regularly. He’d attempted to delete the file but it didn’t work, it enraged the ai. KiKi found out about Keiko, and had somehow eradicated the competition. Akihiko was heartbroken, going back to the dating sim only for sinister revelations and obsessive behavior only driving him further mad; He killed himself days later.

GIVEN | Hiiragi Mix Thoughts Part 1

So I haven't been super active on this blog not because I don't love Given anymore, but any ounce of brain energy dedicated to Given means I have to feel the agony of waiting for the two movies to release. BUT ALAS the time has come because @aarinfantasy is the GOAT thank you thank you thank you~~~ Spoilers and screenshots below the cut 👇👇👇

GENERAL NOTES:

How can Mafuyu be animated even cuter than before? Like I don't even know how but how can he look even more adorable???!!

I love the intentional placement of sound and music in Hiiragi mix, moments of silence are so effective in highlighting tension, awkwardness, release, nervousness. Like even 1 minute into the movie, you hear the boys breathing as Uenoyama is tuning the guitar and Mafuyu is sitting beside him. It's those little details that show the atmosphere between characters perfectly.

I like the balance of Hiiragi/Shizu's storyline and Mafuyama's storyline, it's following the manga closely and shows the complexity and intertwining of their stories. It's a good way to juxtapose the different struggles between the two couples and what they needed from each other to overcome their miscommunication! I think the team took feedback from the Given Movie 1 2020 and OVA broken up into two parts when it should have worked better as one longer movie.

I saw on reddit I think that Hiiragi's VA is still relatively new to the industry but I saw a HUGE improvement in his voice acting in this movie, the range he gave to Hiiragi is amazing!

While Uenoyama's face is funnier in the manga, something about the animated rocket launch from earth JUST GETS ME HAHHAHA. Ok serious talk though how did I not notice that when Uenoyama got confessed to and when Haruki told him he's about to debut, his brain turns into astronaut footage? I think it's a very smart way to illustrate that for Ue, music = love and one cannot exist without the other.

3. OMG Uenoyama's face HAHAH awww man I know he's bummed as hell at Mafuyu's "I'll think about it later" (to the debut proposal) but his face, Ueki and Itaya's faces send me straight to heaven

You know how Ue feels? Our munchkin cat feels like he just proposed to his lover and his lover said, hmnnn I'll think about it. 😭 Chemical, emotional, physical, psychological damage right here>>>

4. The voice acting here from Hiiragi's VA Fumiya Imai SLAPS SO HARD

It's definitely giving deja vu, similar energy to Uenoyama panicking about Mafuyu, gosh I love Hiiragi and Uenoyama's baby gay panics it's so cute.

7. This scene animating Shizu's flashback to childhood was really well done.

It's interesting that in the movie they didn't speak too much about Shizu being transferred from foster home to foster home, or what he had to do to get by. But also, in the manga, I'm pretty sure that they didn't have this scene of a child Shizu closing his hands over "precious stone" but I think it absolutely elevated my connection to Shizu as a character. It really shows that he believes he has been selfishly holding Hiiragi back and that he has been trapping Hiiragi all this time. It gives so much more context to what he did next which if it wasn't clear already, he tried to push Hiiragi away in order to free Hiiragi from him. 8. HOLY SHIT wow goddamn I would not want to live where Akihiko is living oh my 💀💀💀

Watching this scene animated with the noise of the highway really highlights how bad Akihiko's living conditions are. I flagged this because in the Given Manga sequel 10th mix [SPOILER AHEAD], there is this whole thing of Akiharu's disparity with their living conditions so....this is interesting....just putting it out there.....

I also don't remember this scene in the manga, but I really appreciate it, it shows the contrast of Akiharu in the first Given movie vs. this one and how their love and care for each other has evolved! Very cute! I'll make a part 2 soon!
