I wrote a giant Raven Cycle analysis
Hi! Over the last year or so I've been working on a sort of essay about various themes in the raven cycle series, and I finally finished it a few weeks ago.
It is titled: "Why I love The Raven Cycle - An excessive analysis of the themes of friendship, queerness and growing up".
And since tumblr loves its meta (and bc I love peer validation) I've decided to start uploading it bit by bit here, making this the masterpost (if I can figure out the logistics of the linking lmao, bear with me)
(beware of spoilers up to greywaren starting at like 3b!)
Introduction
What even is the Raven Cycle?
Trust me, the characters are queer as fuck and I can prove it a) Blue Sargent b) Gansey c) Adam Parrish d) Ronan Lynch e) Noah f) Henry Cheng g) Honorary mentions
The Gangsey is a polycule
Analyzing the reoccurring themes a) Friendship b) Being a teen/growing up c) (Found) Family d) Magic (as a metaphor) e) Further themes I appreciate
Drawing a conclusion
Click here to start with the introductory parts!
1. Introduction
So here’s the thing: I love fiction almost as much as I love my friends. There’s something deeply comforting about the escapism, even if the book actually makes me want to scream and throw it on the floor (only one book has been thrown so far, I promise!).  Fiction is a healthy thing to occupy my thoughts with: headcanons! Quotes being on loop in my brain! Just fandoms!
And for me, if I am hooked on a book (series), it does not even need a good plot where a lot of things happen. In fact, I would say that my enjoyment of a book is made up of 30% plot and about 70% characters and vibes. If the characters are bland, if they do not make me feel much emotion, it likely won’t be more than 4 stars (additional info: I am way too nice rating books!). I really, really need to love the characters, to be able to relate to some aspects of them, or it just won’t become an obsession.
Since I have already started explaining that a bit, let’s look at this question: What is important to make a book special to me? 1. I need to cry reading it. 2. I have to think about it often, even weeks to months after having read it. 3. Obviously, I need to love the characters. 4. I need to be in the fandom! This can be hard with some books, but the internet is a whimsical space allowing you to find at least a small number of people who are obsessed with a work of fiction to a similar extent as you are.
Now, why am I elaborating on this so much? It’s because The Raven Cycle did all that for me. It is my favorite comfort book series at the moment, for all those aspects mentioned, but of course I cannot just leave it at that. No, I wrote a whole-ass analysis on headcanons and some of its themes. You’re welcome.
2. What even is The Raven Cycle?
The Raven Cycle is all I adore and live for (next to my friends). So, naturally, it’s a book series, specifically a four book young adult contemporary fantasy series by American author Maggie Stiefvater. The books in question are: The Raven Boys (2012), The Dream Thieves (2013), Blue Lily, Lily Blue (2014) and The Raven King (2016), and yes I will admit that the publishing dates are a bit of a red flag. There is also the very relevant follow-up series called The Dreamer Trilogy (Call Down The Hawk, Mister Impossible, Greywaren), but it’s a lot less easy to get into that here as I do not know these entire books by heart, so I’ll stick to the original tetralogy here.
To stick to red flags, the books are set in the fictional Henrietta, a rural town in non-fictional Virginia, US, in the 2010s. However, that doesn’t really say *that* much about the plot, so let me summarize that really quick, because I can do better than the official synopsis! (Or let’s pretend I can.)
Blue Sargent comes from a family of psychics, yet she does not have any powers of her own. Even worse, she is a bit of an amplifier for the others, meaning she is always somehow but never directly involved in the business. As if that isn’t enough for an identity crisis, every psychic she has ever met has told her that her kiss would kill her true love. Yikes.
But because she is that amplifier, she comes to a church watch on St. Mark’s Eve, where psychics see the spirits of those to die within the following year. It’s important business, but to her it’s really just staring into the dark. Until she does actually see a spirit: That of Gansey. Of course this is not a coincidence. No, to add to this teen’s mount of problems, there are only two reasons why a non-seer would see someone’s spirit: They are their true love, or they killed them. Or, in Blue’s case, maybe both.
The aforementioned Gansey is Henrietta’s Golden Boy, the son of politicians (read: he’s fucking loaded). He does not run with the Republicans though, he runs with dead Welsh kings, meaning he has been searching for the probably dead, presumably sleeping Welsh king Glendower (*1350; †1416; yikes) for the past like seven years. Why the fuck would he do that? Well, legend says that he will grant a wish to whoever wakes him, and our favorite PTSD-ridden guy really wants that favor.
Aiding him are fellow Aglionby students Adam Parrish, Ronan Lynch and Noah Czerny, plus Henry Cheng, though only a lot later in the series, but I really did not want to leave out that menace (affectionately) here. The paths of Blue and the boys cross because of Gansey’s search for Glendower, plus the fact that Blue works at a popular pizza place, but that’s a lot less whimsical. And, well, there’s the implication that Gansey might also be her true love, but perhaps she just kills him because of his bad fashion sense, it would be justified. Anyway, in true Famous Five fashion (Ronan is the dog; I won’t elaborate, the girls that get it, get it) they are of course not the only ones searching for the king, so it’s not completely a wholesome friend bonding activity all the way through.
Be prepared for: friendship and growing up, lots of treasure hunting, family mysteries, magical forests, illegal and slightly distasteful activities (our favorite of course), but most of all, heavily queer-coded (or even canonically queer) characters. Be Gay, Do Crime.

What a Look on You || Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw
Summary: Y/N and Rooster are best friends. Two of the closest best friends you'll ever see. The squad tries to get them to admit their feelings, with no luck. Y/N's friend comes into town stirring the pot up a bit.
A/N: Well I'm kind of blown away by all the sweet comments you left on my first Top Gun FF. So I decided to crank another one out for you guys! This time featuring our lovely Bradley Bradshaw. I'll def write a part two to Who are You? Just give me some time :)
Pairing: Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw x Y/N
Word Count: 6400+
Tumblr media
“Come on Gigs, he clearly likes you.” She paused looking you up and down, “Hell, he might be in love with you.” Natasha smirked after sinking yet another pool ball.
“Shut up, Phe. He doesn’t like me, and he certainly doesn’t love me.” You sighed grabbing the pool stick from her. You eyed the stripes, took a deep breath, and miserably missed.
You heard her laugh from behind you, “Too busy thinking about Rooster?”
You lightly shoved the pool stick into her side shaking your head, “No, I was thinking of ways to murder you.”
“You wish, I’d beat your ass. Don’t even try.” She threw a wink in your direction.
You nod silently, “Not disagreeing with that.” Natasha was just stronger than you. Not that you were tiny and weak but there was something so frightening about Natasha Trace that you wouldn’t even think of crossing her.
“So, you agree then?” She asked waiting on your answer patiently.
You groaned shaking your head, “No Phoenix, I do not agree with you. The man doesn’t have feelings for me. That’s it.”
“What man?” The annoying voice of Hangman spoke up from behind you.
“Rooster.” Natasha grinned making kissy faces in your direction.
“Oh no shit, that man is in love with you.” He nodded one hand with a beer the other in his pocket.
“Not you too.” You threw your head back in defeat, “He’s just my best friend. That’s all.” Truth be told you wish it was more. You’ve wished it would be more for years. He was everything to you. He was the man of your dreams really.
He was thoughtful. Oh, was he so thoughtful. He remembered the smallest details about you, making you feel like the most special person in the world. One of your favorite memories with him was when he invited the whole class to his place to watch some football. He had made pulled pork but remembered you didn’t really like pork. So, he pulled you aside and handed you a bowl of shredded chicken. Your heart nearly burst into pieces then, you had only known him a few months and just knew he was it.
He was also so incredibly sweet. One summer when the two of you were walking Virginia Beach, not too far off base, he noticed a little girl drop her ice cream near the vendor. He didn’t hesitate to try and calm the poor girl. He bought her a new cone and quickly gave it to her calming her meltdown. You couldn’t wipe the stupid cheesy grin that laced your face.
He was soft when you needed him to be but hard when he saw you hurt. He was protective of you, so protective of you. He couldn’t bear to see you hurt. He really did think the world of you. He never wanted to lose you. But you never thought to much of it, he just acted like a big brother would.
The two of you met in school. Rooster to be a pilot. You attempted to be one, but you were rather quite miserable at it. So, you tried your hand as a WSO and found your groove with that. Rooster always claimed he didn’t need a WSO but was always so happy to have you along when he was ‘commanded’ it. The pair of you clicked instantly. He always made you laugh. In fact, that’s how you got your callsign ‘Giggles’. He made you laugh when you were in drill, getting you in trouble way to often. You really didn’t mind though; you were so infatuated with the man.
Days turned into months turned into years. The two of you dated different people at different times never really finding the right time to get together. You settled on best friends who literally knew everything about one another. You really did want him but just like him, you couldn’t bear the thought of losing him.
“Besides,” You looked at the two of them, “Carly is coming into town, and I need to worry about that. Not him.”
Jake smirked, “Is she that pretty one you post sometimes.”
Rolling your eyes you nodded, “Yes pig. She’s my pretty friend. She’s off limits for you Hangman.”
Laughing he eyed Phoenix suspiciously, “That’s not your decision sweetheart. It’s hers.”
“Why are you so annoying?” You wanted to punch him, but you restrained yourself knowing better than to crack open that can of worms.
“Relax. Has Carly ever met Rooster?” He questioned.
“No. She’s met nobody here. I went to college with her and really haven’t seen her since. But she lives close so we recently reconnected. Thus, why she’s on my Insta Hangman.” You admitted, way too much. You weren’t sure why you divulged all that information.
He nodded, “Speak of the devil.” His eyes flicked towards the door which your eyes followed looking to the man entering the bar. Your face broke out into a wide grin seeing Roos in his usual Hawaiian shirt, looking relaxed on this fine evening.
“I’d say she’s in love too.” Phoenix laughed.
“Shut up!”
Tumblr media
“I can’t believe you get to look at these guys every day.” Carly whispered ogling nearly every aviator that walked by.
“Every damn day. They’re more like brothers than anything. God, they’re all so annoying.”
She nodded, “Could be worse. You could be looking at Phyllis all day every day.” She laughed which you joined in on. Carly was traditionally beautiful. She was tall, thin, blond, and athletic. Everything came natural for her. Things were just easier for her. You were always slightly jealous of the girl but tried your hardest to let it go, you did a good job at hiding it.
“That’s true. No Phyllis’s here.”
She grinned turning back to the front, a small commotion coming from the entryway. Of course, it was Rooster and Hangman arguing. The two of them were always bickering about something.
“Who are they?”
“Two idiots.” You laughed.
“Wow,” She finally tore her eyes from who you thought was Hangman, “He’s beautiful.”
“Which one?” You asked peaking your eyebrow up in curiosity.
“The brown-haired guy.” She grinned turning back around to eye him. The pair were still caught up in whatever argument they were in as they walked to the bar for some beer.
Your heart sped up a bit, surprised she wasn’t talking about Jake. They always went crazy for Jake, not her Rooster, “That’s Bradley. Rooster.”
“Oh wow, Y/N. That’s your best friend, right?” She looked at you wide eyed.
“Yep, that’s Roos.”
She nodded, “You didn’t tell me he was drop dead gorgeous Y/N. Is he single?”
“Yeah, he is a cutie and he’s single.” You nodded trying your best to sound less than enthused about the whole situation.
“You wouldn’t be mad if I went and talked to him then, would you?” Her eyes brightened as she looked back and forth between the two of you.
Why would she want to do that? You knew Rooster was a catch, it confused you as to why he wasn’t snatched up just yet. It didn’t seem to bother you that a stranger at any time could go up to him and win him over but Carly? That was too much for you. Way too much for you. “No, no I wouldn’t mind.” You lied again refusing to turn and face her. You were being incredibly weird, and you knew it.
“I’m surprised you’re not going for the blonde though, seems more your type?” You spoke up just before she started to walk away. Making any attempt to stop the girl from wooing over your Rooster.
“He’s cute. But there’s something about Rooster. I can’t place my finger on it.” She smiled brightly waiting anxiously for you to let her go talk to him.
Your stomach clenched but you ignored it nodding her on, why were you your own worst enemy? Why were you letting her do this? You knew the second you said it wasn’t okay that she would drop it. You didn’t know why you were being such a chicken shit about the whole thing. But ten years of friendship was hard to give up knowing just how good that friendship could be.
You sat on the high-top chair anxiously tapping your glass attempting to look anywhere other than the bar where Rooster, Hangman and Carly were chatting. Your leg bounced up and down slightly shaking the whole table in your attempts to look the other way.
“You okay Gigs?” A soft voice spoke breaking you out of your trance.
“Hmm, yeah totally fine.” You smiled seeing Bob appear at your side. Bob was always so sweet to you, always looked out for you. You had also known Bob from early on in your career. The two of you being the quietest WSO’s in your respective classes and always getting shit on for it. You tried your best to protect him, and he did the same for you.
He sat down opposite you following your line of sight right to the bar, “What’s the matter?” He asked again waiting for you to open to him. Truth be told you and Bob were close as well. Not as close as you and Rooster but you weren’t afraid to be honest with him. He really felt like a brother to you, a protective one at that.
“Nothing Bobby.” You looked back at him continuing to play with your glass.
“Bullshit Y/N.” He challenged you leaning forward.
“Uh oh, Bob breaking out the real name. I must be in trouble.”
He playfully rolled his eyes, “Somethings up, you looked like a maniac there for a second.”
“I just got distracted.”
“By what?”
You eyed him knowing what he was doing, “My thoughts.”
“Is that why you were staring at Rooster and the girl?”
You sighed, your shoulders slumping just a hair, enough so that Bob noticed, “I wasn’t staring Bobby.”
Shaking his head, he closed his eyes finding the right words to tell his friend, “You are a being a fucking idiot Y/N.”
“Bobby!”
He looked you dead in the eye, “Y/N, I’m being serious. You’re hurting yourself now. You’ve loved that man since I’ve known you. And I’ve known you for almost eight years Y/N.”
“I can’t Bobby. I can’t lose him. I can’t risk it.” You looked down at the empty glass coming to that full realization, you didn’t have it in you. The worst outcome is that Rooster would walk away and that was way worse to you than the slight chance he might like you back.
“Come on Y/N. He likes you too. You just don’t see it because you’re so used to it. Rooster would do anything for you.”
“There’s nothing there Bob. It’s been ten years, there would have been something. I’m his best friend. He’s mine. That’s it.”
He groaned, “Fucking idiots. Both of you.” He threw his head into his hands trying to get you to realize what was right in front of you.
“Jesus whose dog died?” The southern draw from the annoying blonde pilot spoke from behind you.
“What are you talking about Hangman.” You looked at him like an annoyed sister would. If looks could kill yours would.
“Bob here looks miserable. Guess that’s just you bringing out the best in people.” He winked setting his glass down between the sitting pair. You turned around seeing Rooster making his way over slowly with Carly. You held in your disappointment and channeled it to the second most annoying thing in the room.
“Charming as ever Jake.”
He decided to stop after seeing the sadness in your eyes. You thought you were great at hiding your emotions, turns out your damn facial expressions gave you away like a book. “You love my southern charm darling.” He gave you a side hug attempting to bring the snarky Y/N back out, not the mopey one.
“Yeah, yeah.” You nodded looking at Bob who was simply observing what was going on around him. You were sad. Hangman caught onto it and tried his best to cheer you up, Hangman style. Rooster seemed enamored with Carly and Carly seemed just as enamored as him as they walked up to the small high-top table. You looked like you were about to combust when you saw where his arm had landed, right on her hip drawing her closer to him. You flicked your eyes to Carly who was smiling at him. You then looked at Rooster who of course was staring right back at her, even when they got to the table.
“Roos, nice to see you.” You said all too bitterly before hoping off the chair refusing to look at him. “I’m getting another, anybody need anything?” You just looked at Bob, ignoring the rest of the group.
“Yeah, I’ll come with you.” He followed grabbing his empty glass. What you didn’t see was the hurt look that crossed Rooster’s face after the unfriendly greeting. He couldn’t recall a time when you had spoken to him that way, your voice was always so sweet and kind. Even when the two of you argued you never had sounded so upset before.
“You didn’t have to come, I just panicked.” You admitted once you got to the semi-crowded bar.
“Because you don’t like him.”
“Uhh, shush. You know I do. Just shut up about it.”
He grinned, “It’s nice to hear you finally admit it.”
“Shhh, Bobby, lower your voice. You know, you’ve known. You’re the only person I’d admit it too though.” You waved the bartender down for another round, not seeing Penny tonight.
“Y/N has a crush, Y/N has a crush!” He whisper shouted in your ear.
You wide eyed him, “Shut up Bobby, I will beat you up.”
He started full on laughing now, “Why do you always threaten violence, Y/N?”
Your mouth fell open in disbelief. Who was this Bob and where did hers go? “Bobby, you’re being a little shit right now.”
“I’m just excited you finally fucking admitted it Gigs.” He clapped your back.
Shaking your head, you picked up your beer and slowly made your way back to the trio that had taken over your high top. Rooster had backed off Carly a bit.
Rooster grinned when he saw you walking back over with Bob, “Giggles.” Still grinning with that big, beautiful smile he had.
“Roos.” You nodded your head sitting back in your seat next to him, returning the smile as best as you could.
That worried him, your half smile did. It was different. If there was anything he noticed in this world it was when you acted different. It was always so easy and normal between the two of you. He could pick up when something was off, he just knew something was off.
“Have a good day?” He asked you, just you. Looking right at you, the staring was almost too intense for you. You in turn also noticed things with Rooster. Like right now, him boring his eyes into the side of your head was certainly new.
You hummed, “Fine, except Cyclone was up our asses all day today.”
Bob nodded in agreement, “Some new wizzo training he’s getting us all on.”
“Seems like a bunch of bullshit to me.” You continued, “But can’t talk back to Cyclone. No siree, no.” You took a long drink from your beer. It was really hitting the spot today. You glanced up and Rooster was smiling at you. You nearly forgot about your poor friend Carly, standing there clueless.
“Sorry Carly,” You smiled at her, “Wizzo is WSO which is what Bob, and I are.”
“Right!” She laughed, “Weapons people, right?”
Hangman chuckled, “The best damn weapons people we got right here.”
“Aww, is Hangman being sweet?” You cooed at the tall blond.
“That’s what I have tell myself, since you are the only two left here.”
“You asshole.” Bob laughed smacking his arm.
“Not that you guys aren’t the most fun but there’s a pretty little thing over there that just walked in, so if you’ll excuse me.” Hangman winked over at Bob before sauntering off, surely turning up the charm, to the girl.
“Oh Hangman.” You laughed turning your attention back to the group, “And your day Roos?”
“Same old, same old.” He laughed running a hand through his hair. You attempted to hide your ogling eyes, why did he have to do this to you? It’s not like he hasn’t run his hand through his hair a thousand times before you. You willed your brain to just stop thinking of him as more than just a friend, but it might finally be rebelling against your wishes. You didn’t want to blame Carly for the green-eyed monster that was threatening to spill out, but she was the only difference in the group.
“Mav kick your ass yet again?” You smirked watching for his reaction.
“Hey now, Giggles. I’ll get him one of these days.”
Shaking your head, you eyed Bob who was having all too much fun watching the two of you go back and forth, “Statistics say you’ll have to beat him one of these days.”
He pointed his finger at you playfully smirking, “You just know exactly what to say.”
You shrugged looking back to Carly, “Roos can’t beat his instructor, Maverick. Bit of a running joke at this point.”
“Don’t poison her mind Y/N!” He gasped pulling her tight. Ouch, that hurt, you noticed. You noticed how easily they seemed to mesh, how Carly’s face lit up when she was pulled into his side, how he seemed more than pleased with himself holding onto her.
“You’re already doing that Rooster.” You force a laugh knowing just how unnatural it sounded.
“So, Y/N, Bradley was telling me about all the different places I should check out when I’m here.” She grinned looking up at him with her big brown doe eyes. You bit your lip forcing yourself to stay civil.
“Oh yeah? Like where?” You asked genuinely curious of what he had said to her.
“A few beaches, the museum, the base and didn’t you say something about a cliff?” She asked pulling on his arm getting him to look back to her. He obliged nodding his head like a little kid.
The cliff? Your cliff that only you and Rooster seemed to know about and made sure not to share with anybody? He mentioned your spot to her. It seemed as if the air had gotten knocked out of your lungs. You hadn’t defined that the cliff was your spot but neither of you brought it up to anybody else. It stung, it hurt, and you quite frankly didn’t know how to react. You fought the stupid hot tears that wanted to flood out of your eyes.
You set your halfway empty glass back down onto the table, harder than needed. Which of course caused both Carly and Rooster to look at you. You faked another smile and muttered, “Why doesn’t Rooster just show you?”
Bob sat back in his seat curiously watching the situation unfold before him. He noticed Carly light up at the suggestion again pulling on his arm, “That’s a great idea Y/N!”
You curled your lip fighting every damn emotion that wanted to spill out, “Chock full of them.”
Rooster laughed trying to ease the tension he could clearly see coming from you, “Are you sure Gigs? I don’t want to take time away from you and Carly.” He asked placing his hand on yours.
“Oh, I’m positive Bradley, go have so much fun.” The words came out just as bitterly as before. You were testing him, and he was failing you miserably. You knew it wasn’t exactly the fairest test. You weren’t communicating with him, you desperately wanted him to see what you were doing, but he didn’t see it.
“If you’re sure.” He tried to grab your hand again which you slid away just in time. You looked back up at Bob with the saddest eyes he’s sure seen. Again, you refused to look over at Rooster, you knew the waterworks would be out in full effect if you did.
“Mhmm.” You hummed chugging the rest of your beer, “I’m going to go.” You spoke more to Bob than to Carly and Rooster.
You quickly gathered your things and started walking to the door head full of every scenario imaginable. What if Rooster liked her? What if he decided to start dating her? You shuddered at the thought. Of course, it would be Carly to come swoop in and take him away from you. Carly was playing life on easy mode; she could get whoever she wanted whenever she wanted.
You made it about halfway to the door before realizing you drove Carly here. You sighed and turned around seeing Bob silently sitting there with his thoughts watching you while Rooster and Carly seemed very into whatever they were chatting about.
“Rooster.” You shouted not wanted to walk back over there and deal with it, “Bring Carly home. Or don’t, whatever.” You mumbled the last sentence, hoping he really didn’t hear what you had to say.
He gave you a thumbs up sending another kick to your stomach. Spinning around on your heel you beelined it for the door now. Once out of the bar the fresh air hit you like a ton of bricks, a few tears escaped. This really wasn’t how you thought this night would go. You thought Carly would be all over Hangman or one of the other pilots, not Rooster.
You hopped in your car mentally thanking yourself for parking on the opposite side of the bar, away from any windows. You sat there and let yourself cry it out. They were silent tears. You didn’t want to breakdown in the parking lot of the Hard Deck, but your emotions were simply getting the best of you now.  You had to wonder why you were feeling this bad now, you’ve seen Roos flirt with hundreds of girls and take them back to his place, why did Carly freak you out so much?
You don’t know how long you sat there but it was long enough for you to hear a knock on your window. You almost jumped out of your seat looking over to see Bob standing there with his hands in his pockets.
“Bobby?” You asked while sniffling.
“Let me drive you home.”
You shook your head, “No, I…”
“Y/N.” He just looked at you. You let your shoulders fall before unbuckling yourself. You got out and moved yourself to the passenger’s side, letting Bob take the driver’s seat.
“Bob, I can really do this myself. I’ve done it a thousand times.”
He rolled his eyes while starting your car up, “I called your name three times Gigs, you’re not fine.”
“I am fine, I was just…”
“Thinking?” He interrupted seemingly agitated with your responses.
“Yeah Bobby, just thinking.” You hummed looking out the window.
The ride back to your place was mostly silent, just the radio chatter buzzing away. You weren’t sure what to say. Bob sure as hell didn’t know what to say. He simply observed two adults who clearly have feelings for each other continually put both of themselves in pain watching the other. It didn’t make sense to him. He was sure Rooster had feelings for you, deep feelings, although he’s never directly confirmed it. He also knew that you liked him, having finally admitting it to him.
He pulled up to your place off base, he didn’t live to far from you. He was planning on walking home and finding a ride back to the bar tomorrow. He couldn’t let you drive seeing how zoned out you were, how distraught you really looked. He had to wonder if this was a regular occurrence for you. He didn’t really see the longing in your eyes before tonight.
You started to get up, he realized he needed to say something quick, “Y/N, I’m not the best at giving advice. But I think you need to tell him. You’re tearing yourself apart over this.”
You turned away from him thinking for a moment, “What if he leaves me Bobby? I don’t think I could go on. I really don’t.” A fresh set of tears started making their way down your red cheeks. You turned back to him shaking your head.
“Hey Y/N.” He frowned seeing you look so small and broken. He was never good at this, women crying, it always overwhelmed him, “He would never leave you. He loves you.” Bobby squeezed your hand softly trying you to get you to understand what he saw day in and day out.
“I’ll think about it.” You mumbled finally opening your eyes to him.
He nodded with a smile on his face, “Good, that’s a start Gigs.”
You used your cardigan to wipe the tears off your face, “Thank you Bobby, for everything. Really, thank you.”
He gave you his genuine Bob smile, “Anytime Giggles.”
You smiled back at him remembering when you were ‘officially’ assigned your callsign. Rooster stood diagonally in front of you in drill. Every time the Captain would turn away, he would make a remarkably stupid face which made you laugh, a little too loudly. Your poor ass caught the end of Captain Warmack’s really bad day. You started giggling trying to hide your face, but Warmack caught you. He stood right in front of you, squatted down and started berating you. You had to take it, in front of the whole class. You were sure your face was as red as a cherry tomato. At the end of his yelling he said, “And all you do is giggle, giggle, giggle.” Sparking the callsign in Rooster’s head. He profusely apologized when you were dismissed and you shrugged him off telling him, “It took everything in me not to laugh Roos.” And the pair of you were cracking up. Officially earning your callsign Giggles. You didn’t hate it, but you certainly didn’t love it, you were growing to love it. Over time it got shortened down to Gigs, which you embraced whole heartedly. You were worried that the name made you seem weak, but it did the opposite, people saw you as approachable which gave you many opportunities over the years to show how good of a WSO you really were.
“Night Bobby.” You said as the two of you exited the car, “You can drive my car home if you want.”
He shook his head, “It’s a ten-minute walk, I might need you to drop me off at the Hard Deck tomorrow though.” He sheepishly grinned.
“Anything for you Bob.” You waved while entering your home. It wasn’t really your home; you were renting it out from a couple while you were here. You weren’t sure how much longer you would really be here anyway. The mission was over, half the squad was already reassigned. You knew your time was ending and it terrified you that you would be shipped away from Rooster yet again. The two of you had managed to get deployed together often but not every time. Your stomach was always in knots whenever you were due for reassignment, just hoping you’d be close to him.
You looked at the clock frowning seeing it was only 8, you really did plan on being out for a while longer. You decided on pampering yourself tonight seeing as that was the only thing that could get your mind off Carly and Rooster. You turned your phone to silent and set it by your bedside not wanting any distractions. You picked up your favorite book deciding a nice long soak in the tub was exactly what you needed. After spending far too much time soaking you decided to just read and go to sleep. Your eyes closed around 10 that night, failing to turn your phone over since you had gotten home.
What you didn’t see were the frantic texts from Rooster making sure you were okay. He has probably texted you 15 times between the time you left the bar and when he was dropping Carly off. You were clearly upset trying to play the whole thing off as nothing. So, he decided to text you to make sure you were alright. An hour passed and the conversation with Carly was fine. She was a beautiful woman, but she didn’t hold a straw to you. After the first hour he sent a few more texts, just hoping for a response but to no avail. He distracted himself by taking Carly down to the beach showing her a few things. He wasn’t really going to take her to the cliff, it kind of just spilled out when he was talking to her earlier.
After another few hours of faking it with Carly he decided that he needed to check on you. It was nearing 10 and you still hadn’t texted him back which sent a little terror through him. Once he pulled in, he let Carly know he was just going to talk to you. He walked in enjoying the smell of your home. It always smelled like lavender, just like you did. Rooster was sure Carly picked up in his disinterest, he wasn’t trying to blow the girl off he just needed to make sure you were okay.
You were sound asleep when you heard a soft knocking on your door. Annoyed you rolled back over willing yourself back to sleep, but the knocking wouldn’t stop, “I’m sleeping Carly.” You spoke softly hoping she would just go away.
“Not Carly.” Rooster’s voice spoke through the door.
You internally groaned not ready for whatever this was, “Yeah Roos?”
“Can I come in?” He asked leaning his entire body on your door.
“Sure.” You spoke while still laying down, not feeling like moving.
He quickly opened the door taking a second for his eyes to adjust to the darkness. He smiled seeing you laying there, looking so peaceful. You were still clearly trying to wake yourself up.
Yawning your stretched out while Rooster took a seat on the other side of the bed, “What’s up Roos?” You rolled over turning your body to him fluttering your eyes, trying to keep them open.
He looked sad, “You didn’t answer my texts.”
“I haven’t looked at my phone since I left the bar.” You admitted, almost whispering. Is that why he was here?
“Really?” He asked looking anywhere but you, “I texted you a lot.” He sighed looking down at his hands.
You bit your cheek to stop the stupid grin that was going to give you away, “I’m sorry Bradley, I was just tired and… yeah just tired.” You stopped yourself from spilling everything, just tired, that was all.
“Are you okay?” He asked leaning back into your bed turning himself to face you now, far too close for your poor little heart to handle.
You nodded, “I’m fine.”
“You just seemed so upset at me when you left the bar.” He stated in an almost whisper matching your nervousness.
“Did I?” You asked softly deciding to break the eye contact you two were making.
“Mhmm. Really upset and if was something I did…”
“No, it wasn’t you Roos. It’s me. I just…” You stopped this time feeling the emotions coming back stronger than ever. Your throat tightened up and you could feel your stupid eyes beginning to water. You quickly flipped around so you were facing him anymore to take a deep breath. Again, this was perhaps the last thing you expected to happen to you tonight.
“Hey, hey, hey, come back to me Y/N. You can tell me anything, you know that.” He placed his warm hand on your shoulder squeezing it tightly drawing you back into the room.
“If I tell you what I want to tell you it could ruin everything Rooster.” You whispered letting a few tears fall.
He could tell you were crying. It nearly broke his heart in two. He hated when you cried, he hated the boys that would fuck with you and break you down. He couldn’t stand it. It freaked him knowing that he was likely the source of your tears, “You could never ruin anything Y/N. I promise.” He cooed still holding your shoulder tightly in his hand, afraid you would vanish if he let go.
Here goes nothing, “Bradley I…” You took a deep breath before continuing, “I was jealous tonight.” You closed your eyes waiting for him to respond, so afraid of what his reaction might be.
He didn’t respond right away which sent your mind into a million directions all at once. You felt him get up from his spot on the bed, finally letting your shoulder go. This was it, he was walking out on you. How could you be so stupid? How could you ruin the one good thing you had, the best thing in the world?
“Y/N,” You felt him pushing the hair away from your face catching you by surprise, “Please open your eyes.” He stated.
You obliged, sucking in a breath when you saw just how dangerously close he was to you now. He was squatting down to the floor. His head was level with yours.
He grinned seeing your eyes snap open, “There you are.” He spoke so softly. Continuing to brush the hair out of your face putting you into overdrive. You weren’t sure how to deal with the utter intimacy. Sure, you and Rooster were close, but this was so different. He was looking at you like you really were the only thing that mattered. His palm felt so warm against your face you were sure you were about to combust.
“Here I am.” You looked away from him again. This was something. Any sort of courage you had was gone. This was your Rooster, yet you couldn’t even look him in the eyes for more than a second.
He cocked his head ever so slightly waiting for you to continue. You took another deep breath making sure to avoid his face when you exhaled, he was so close to you just waiting. Waiting on you to make the next move.
“I wanted to be her Roos.” You took a gulp ready to let it all spill now, “I was so jealous when you wouldn’t take your eyes off her. When you pulled her close. I was a stupid jealous girl who didn’t and still doesn’t know how to say this.” You groaned in frustration eyeing him to see his reaction. He looked happy, content, almost thrilled at the admission, so you continued, “I… I like you, Rooster. I like you way more than best friend should and uhm I…” You faltered.
He placed a finger over your mouth smiling as big as you’ve ever seen him smile, “My turn. I love you, Y/N. Not just as a friend, I’m in love with you. I’ve been in love with you for as long as I’ve known you.” He looked right at you. You were struggling to process his admission to you. He loved you. He was in love with you. Your heart couldn’t keep up with your mind that was spinning in a thousand different directions.
“You do?” You managed to squeak out in the mess your mind currently was.
He nodded with his big goofy grin taking your head in both of his hands, “I’m so fucking in love with you Y/N it hurts and jealousy is quite the look on you.”
“Oh, wow.” Is all you said before you started cracking up. The relief that flooded through your system was twenty times stronger than any adrenaline rush the Navy gave you. The laughter was one of sheer bliss. Like you were floating through clouds, and you never had to land. You were sure your smile reached all the way up past your eyes. You placed your hands over top of his, which were still cocooning your face.
He joined in as well. The relief of knowing how the other felt about each other was nothing like anything the pair had experienced before. After a few minutes of Rooster making you laugh harder you finally came down from the high you were experiencing. He had yet to release your head from his hands. This time not afraid you would disappear but in euphoria that you admitted your feelings, he wanted to touch you for forever.
The laughter died down and two idiots were left looking at one another just smiling, finally admitting what had been building up for literally a decade.
You hummed rubbing your thumb along the back of his hand noticing the chills the rose when you did so, “I think I love you to.” You nodded your head, “No, I do love you. I don’t think I do. I love you, Bradley.”
That was all it took for him to let go of your head, gently of course. He scooped you like you didn’t weigh a pound from your laying position and brought you close to him, bridal style, “I thought I’d never hear those words coming from those beautiful lips.”
You turned your head into his chest to hide the insane blush that was inevitably covering your entire face, “No, no, no, don’t hide that face from me beautiful.” You could feel him laughing as he held you in his arms.
“That’s not fair.” You turned your head to take another good look at him. Your Rooster. Your beautiful Rooster. Who was holding you so gently in his arms. You hugged him tightly not wanting to let him go this time feeling like this was all too good to be true.
He pulled you closer to him in response, “Penny for your thoughts?” He asked in response to your actions.
You shook your head, “I just don’t want to let you go Bradley.” You smiled looking up to him. So happy. You were sure this is the happiest you’ve ever been in your life. Your Bradley. You were going to get to tell him you loved him for forever and you really couldn’t wait. You were going to get to wake up next to him, when you weren’t off on missions, every day and you really didn’t want to wait, “Stay with me tonight?”
He nodded rocking you back in forth gently in his arms, “I’ll stay whenever you ask, whenever you need me to.”
Your smile got even bigger if that were even possible, “Can you kiss me now Bradley?”
“I thought you’d never ask.”

HI!
Can I please have some New York, England, and the Dutch Empire angst? New York being hurt by England and feeling depressed because his father left him for some nutmeg? (True-story)
Thank you!
HIIIIII
Yes you may :D
(TW: ABUSE, ABANDONMENT, RACISM AND JUST A WHOLE LOTTA ANGST)
Then Netherlands was kinda the closest thing to a father that New York ever had. He was better than England anyways, and New York could actually see him as a dad.
^Which is why New York was so.... crushed. when Netherlands gave him up for spices and riches on another side of the world. He loved Netherlands (in a family way). Didn't Netherlands love him too?
Now as for Great Britain. Great Britain wasn't necessarily abusive, but more so neglectful. New York barely even knew anything about Great Britain other than he was some guy with a stick up his ass, and seemingly held a bit more power than England did.
England, however. Was a fucking MONSTER. Towards the colonies, but more so towards the gold star colony, New York. What Great Britain was looking for, was a war weapon, and something to take after him. What England was looking for, was power and a punching bag essentially (no one knows why).
But alas, England was kinda under Great Britain's rules, so he still had to try and get what England wanted out at least one of the colonies.
Maryland? Too soft hearted and caring.
Connecticut? He knows what's right and is not afraid to speak up if he thinks something is off.
New Jersey? Too stubborn and consumed with "womanly" activities like flowers.
Pennsylvania? Too brash and stubborn.
Massachusetts? Also too stubborn and spiteful to allow the British to get the better of him. And England found him annoying.
Georgia? Well. Let's say that England was a tad....racist. And Georgia, like the others, was stubborn as hell.
North Carolina and South Carolina were always by each other's sides and would allow no harm to be made to the other. Plus they would be quite the handful to deal with.
Virginia? Well....Great Britain specifically said to leave Virginia alone for some reason (he wanted Ginny to be more so in the side of education and stuff, rather than warfare)
Delaware? was much too interested in marine life and the ocean to even bother trying to listen to any training or anything.
New Hampshire? Well. Only God knows where he was half of the time (he's in the woods 24/7 and has become one with nature /hj)
Rhode Island? Too small. (haHA-)
That left him with.... New York. New York was young, and naive, and desperate for a father figure , and he was obedient (scared) and always did as he was told (because he was scared).
Hm. That could work.
So yeah! England was a horrible piece of shit to New York and quite literally left no room for defiance from New York! New York did basically everything England said, took all the beatings and everything. Have I mentioned all that England did to him in the prison during the Revolution? (Yes I have, there's a lot about it in my other posts).
Yet by the time the Revolution was over, New York was but a mere husk of a person. He was weak, and broken, and uh. England had no use for him anymore! Luckily, New York was rescued.
If he hadn't been rescued though, things could've ended much much worse for New York....

You just moved from Virginia, where you had spent most of your childhood, due to your father having been stationed there. Your parents divorce is how you ended up in your mom’s town in Texas living with her and your grandparents.
School was a place you knew you could escape your parents constant arguing and it also helped that it was somewhere you excelled.
New schools were intimidating especially when you're starting your sophomore year and everyone already knew everyone, but you eventually found yourself a group of friends that welcomed you with open arms. Within that group you met your best friend, Evelyn Seresin, and her matching green-eyed twin brother, Jake.
You spent a year and a half going in circles around each other, him being one of the most popular kids in your grade and you struggling with his charismatic nature that caused him to flirt with half the girls in your class. You struggled with the idea of love and the idea of someone wanting to be with you. Your examples of love weren't exactly what anyone would call a healthy relationship. Your parents married young and had you shortly after their 20th and 22nd birthdays. Their marriage was hardly something that led you to believe in love, your father having multiple affairs and your mother continually letting it happen until she found out he was leaving her for another woman. A healthy relationship wasn't something you imagined you'd get to experience.
Your feelings for Jake scared you, but you found yourself being pulled in by him every time you were around him. When he found out your favorite flowers were Tulips, he started calling you Tulip as if it was a secret way of saying I love you. You don’t know when your feelings started for him, maybe it was the first day you met in the hallway on the way to fifth period, or when he finally asked you to be his girlfriend during spring of senior year while sitting out by the water and him holding a bouquet of pink tulips or maybe it was when you got a little too drunk off grandpa Seresin’s super secret moonshine at a bonfire party and he made sure you got home safely despite him only just getting his license earlier that day.
It scared you that you knew what it meant when your heart skipped a beat and your palms get sweaty. You were scared of ending up like your parents, but you did your best to push those feelings away because you hope and pray that your love story is not the same.
I say, "Can you believe it?"
As we're lyin' on the couch
The moment I could see it
Yes, yes, I can see it now
The summer before college was a whirlwind, Jake joined the Navy and is attending College through them while you’re on a partial scholarship.
You and Jake found yourselves laying on the couch at his family’s house, cuddled up after watching a Disney movie marathon before your freshman year starts next week.
“Can you believe it?” You ask, leaning up on your arm from his chest.
“Can I believe what, Tulip?” He looks at you, “Can you believe they all just find the love of their lives and get to live happily ever after?”
“I mean that’s like Disney’s whole deal.” He chuckles.
“I mean like the whole falling in love thing,” you pause, “it’s just so easy for them. What happens if they ever fall out of love?”
Jake raises an eyebrow, “That’s a cynical way to view it. What if they stay in love?” He challenges.
“Mhm, I guess that’s a possibility,” you hum.
“Do you not believe in love?” Sits himself up on the couch to get a better view of your face.
“I don’t not believe in love.” You pause, “Do you believe in love?”
“Mhm,” he gives you that one-hundred watt seresin smile, “because I love you.”
You stare at him for a minute and then pull him into a kiss, “I love you too,” you say through the kiss.
Flash forward and we're takin' on the world together
You learn my secrets and you figure out why I'm guarded
You say we'll never make my parents' mistakes
You stared at Jake while he sat there waiting for your answer, “Sorry, can you repeat that?”
“Do you ever think about what our marriage would look like?” He repeated.
“Uh, honestly, I haven’t really thought about marriage. I didn’t exactly have the best role models,” you looked away from him. You didn’t want to talk about your parents or the fact that you were estranged from them. You moved out once college started and spent holidays and breaks at Evelyn and Jake’s family’s house.
“You know we wouldn’t be like them,” he put his hand on your face and softly rubbed your cheek with his thumb, “I’d watch whatever romcom you wanted without complaining, I’d cook you breakfast in bed, I’d write you little cheesy love notes,” you interrupted him with a laugh.
“What’s so funny, Tulip?” He questions you.
“Sorry, but the picture of you cooking breakfast and writing cheesy love notes is hilarious. You can hardly flip a pancake.” You grinned.
He smirked, “Maybe I’ll learn before we have kids,” you chuckled, “little Jake and Ava will just have to go to learn to love oatmeal and cornflakes for breakfast,” you joke.
He raises an eyebrow and smirks, “Little Jake, you wanna have another Jake Seresin running around?”
“Maybe, not little Jake, that’d just inflate your ego.” You pull him into a kiss.
He deepens the kiss and then pulls away, “listen, as much as I wanna keep talking about this, my little Jake is feeling a little aroused.”
“Ew Jake,” you push him off you with a laugh, “never say that to me again or big Jake will never get laid again.”
But we got bills to pay
We got nothing figured out
You stared down at the test with a small but very visible plus sign. Thousands of thoughts rushed through your head, but all you wanted to do was puke. The two of you had just graduated college this past fall and been living together for six months. You were barely getting by and picking up extra shifts whenever you could get them. You had no idea how you would be able to afford a baby especially not when Jake’s dream job was still years away.
You heard the door to your tiny quaint apartment open and close. “Honey, I’m home.” You heard your sweetheart say. You rushed out of the bathroom to greet him.
“I’m pregnant.”
His smile dropped, “I got into flight school.”
You both stared at each other for a minute before you had both registered what had been said. You had known of his dreams to be a Naval Aviator, but you never could have planned the plot twist life just threw at you.
Braced myself for the goodbye
'Cause that's all I've ever known
Then you took me by surprise
You said, "I'll never leave you alone"
“Oh,” that was all you could bring yourself to say. You had begun to play with your fingers nervously feeling, once again like you had as a child. You were afraid this would be his opportunity to leave you like your father had. People didn’t stay long in your life, maybe this was only ever meant to be temporary too.
Jake quickly realized how fast you were beginning to close yourself off as soon as he saw tears slide down your cheeks. He moved closer to wipe your tears away.
“We have nothing figured out. We’re barely making ends meet as it is, how are we supposed to support another human?” You continued, “and then what happens when you get deployed? What if you get hurt and leave me?”
“We’ll figure this out,” He pulled you in close and wrapped you safely in his arms. “Tulip, I'll never leave you alone. I promise you.” He kissed your head as you cried into his chest. “You’re the best thing that’s ever been mine.” You say to him softly through your tears. You had never felt safer than you had in this moment.
You also knew at this moment that you wanted no one, but Jake Seresin for as long as he’d let you have him. At the time you didn’t know it, but he was already thinking about what the future would look like for the two of you.
You said, "I remember how we felt sitting by the water
And every time I look at you, it's like the first time
I fell in love with a careless man's careful daughter
She is the best thing that's ever been mine"
Your daughter, Molly, was now seven months old and you and Jake were bringing her to his parents ranch for her first Christmas.
“How’s my favorite niece?” Evelyn screamed and ran towards you and your daughter with open arms.
“She’s your only niece, Eve.” Jake laughed as he put down the empty baby carrier and held his arms open for her to hug him after hugging you and Molly.
“I missed you so much,” she loudly whispered to you and then moved on to hug Jake, “you’re my favorite brother.” She said giving him a squeeze.
“I’m your only brother,” he squeezed her, “you’re my favorite sister.” He laughed, “good, I’ll be sure to tell Sav, Kim and Ava.” She smirked.
“You’re my least favorite sister.” He said sarcastically, pulling away from her.
Later that day, you found yourself outside sitting on the dock by the lake that sat in the backyard of Jake’s parent’s ranch with Evelyn.
“I really did miss you,” Evelyn said looking at you from her cup of wine.
“I’m sorry that I haven’t been the best about keeping in contact, it’s just having a baby changes a lot.”
“I know, it’s partially on me as well, but promise me we’ll always be best friends even though you’re with my brother.” She held out her pinky finger.
“I promise,” you say and wrap your pinky around hers, “You know I always knew you’d end up with Jake.” she gave you that familiar Seresin smirk.
“You knew?” you raised an eyebrow, “I mean yeah, you guys always ran in each other’s orbits,” she laughed, “If y’all didn’t get together Senior year, I was gonna lock you both in a room until you finally confessed your feelings.” She confessed.
“Oh my god, you were not!” You playfully push her.
“I was so sick of seeing you guys make googly eyes at each other. I’m just glad it worked out, I couldn’t think of someone better for Jakeor for you.” She pulled you into a tight hug.
“Am I interrupting something?” Jake asked while fiddling with the ring in his pocket.
Evelyn smiled at Jake, “Absolutely not,” she grabbed her drink and patted his back, “good luck little brother.”
“I’m two minutes younger,” Jake exclaimed while she walked away, “still younger than me.” She laughed and continued walking back to the house.
Jake made his way over to you. You stood up to give him a quick kiss and wrapped your arms around him, “Do you remember the last time we were here?”
“Yeah, you asked me to be your girlfriend.” You stared out at the lake while remembering that moment that changed your entire life.
Jake pulled out the ring and got down on one knee, “Y/N, I love you more than anything else, well besides Molly, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you and making you happy. Will you marry me?” He waited hesitantly.
You stared down at him in shock, “Say yes!” You look over and see Evelyn holding Molly with Jake’s other sister’s and parents standing behind her.
“Yes!” You look back at Jake and smile with tears in your eyes.
Jake stands up and slides the ring into your finger. “You’re the best thing that’s ever been mine.” He says into the kiss.
Yes, yes, do you believe it? (Hold on)
Yes, yes, we're gonna make it now (Hold on)
Yes, yes, I can see it
Yes, yes, I can see it now

Why I Think Johnny Kills Danny (Before the Game even starts):
Footage by me <3 eating shit when I was a Julie Main (Maria gal now ever since she came out but both of them are SO WEAK Gun PLEASE give Jules a speed boost and Maria's ability do SOMETHING MORE-) but just for a full visual so folks can see what this animation full looks like
First, I wanna go over the fact that Johnny and Danny are foils of each other. I think I'm using the word correctly? Think about Danny's backstory; a scrappy orphan who's good with his hands, specifically mechanics, who presumably grew up on a farm (I personally believe that Jared Gaines is part of Danny's foster family, but that's pure speculation based on them both being Texans with the same last name, so I have no idea), and has gone on to turn his life into something, attending a university and meeting the girl of his dreams. He is a sweetheart, doting, devoted, a real Southern gentleman through and through.
And now Johnny; a scrappy orphan who, if those are oil stains on his gloves and what Ronnie Hobbs (creative director) for the game said in an interview about Johnny being designed to 'look like a guy who helps out at a gas station' (paraphrasing) and the fact that he lives in a god damn scrapyard, is good with his hands, specifically mechanics, who grew up on a farm and has been forced to be something he is not- a brutal killer. Despite fighting against it, he has had no choice but to be a Slaughter and has grown to be especially brutal because of that. He doesn't want it, he has no choice, therefore he will be the best fucking killer there is. He is cruel, cold, has found a way to take pleasure in his craft, but is also incredibly charming, a soft side to him that can be heard through the way he speaks to Hands, Choptop and sometimes Nubbins, even Nancy gets a somewhat distant affection from him in some of his lines.
The two are almost perfect parallels, hell, maybe if Johnny had been able to stay with Judith and have a normal life, he and Danny could have been almost identical.
Now, contrary to what some folks think, I do believe that Johnny is in love with Maria. Not a normal love, not a healthy love, but a love nonetheless, and a love that is entirely his own, the first person he has ever chosen to love on his own, not because they were 'family' and he had to. As I said in my Johnny's Bluffing analysis, he initially plans to seduce and kill Maria just like every other woman he takes a vague interest in, but, because she's in love with Danny, he can't do that, and is instead forced to be around her sweet, kind, loving self and he falls head over heels for her. Who wouldn't? So he kidnaps her, luckily Grandpa takes a shine to her and lets her stay with a 'not dinner' badge, and Johnny finally has her to himself.
There's only one problem; she doesn't love him.
'Pretty Boy' Johnny has never struggled to make people like him or even fall for him. That's the easy part for him, he's used to being sexualised and leans into it. People fall at his feet all the time, so why is it the one woman he actually wants won't? Maria admits in her letters home on the Maria Flores Tribute Account on Instagram that she finds him attractive. But her heart belongs to Danny. No matter how hard he tries, Maria can't fall for him. Everyone in the family knows he loves her, but she doesn't feel the same, not only because she loves someone else, but because he went about it completely wrong. He likely spends a whole week down there trying to get her to want him, every trick in the book, just trying to make her feel for him what he does for her, but it just isn't working.
And then...
youtube
The man who he sees as keeping Maria from him literally shows up on his front door step.
We know from the Devs that Danny leaves early to go find Maria. I believe that he is dead before the gang arrive to save her, same as how I think Virginia dies before they get there, and I also think that Maria never finds out that Danny dies at all.
Now, obviously what happens in the trailer isn't the entire 100% truth as to what goes down here, but we have a general gist, and I believe that in Nancy's line of questioning, she gets angry at Danny and that is why she attacks him in a pretty reckless move for someone who seems so calculated and careful.
Not only has this 'floosy' taken her sweet boy's attention away from her, but she already has a boyfriend!? Nancy is insulted on Johnny's behalf, and is confirmed in her suspicions that Maria is no good for him. Because if he must have someone, they better devote themselves to him the way she does. If Johnny has to have someone, they better fucking let him, and not have some boyfriend waiting for them back home to complicate things.
Danny obviously fights Nancy off and runs away to the spare bedroom (where Maria's camera happens to be, I wonder why that is? wink wink nudge nudge I have my thoughts about that if y'all wanna know em), getting out into the scrapyard. He's locked in now, on his own facing Nancy on her land.
Right?
Well... no. Because who lives in that scrapyard?
Either Johnny is already there in his shack, or he'll be back from the Family House soon, and Nancy will tell him who Danny is and that he hurt his mother.
And Johnny isn't going to like that.
Something about his animation for the 'Choke Artist' Execution that I've always found interesting is the level of anger he has whilst doing it. We know that choking is Johnny's favourite method of killing someone, it's what he's known for around Texas in his various murders. So why isn't he enjoying himself? He only seems to enjoy it once he knows that they're dead, but during the choking is a sheer rage that seems totally different to every single one of his other kills.
Well, picture this:
Johnny has spent all this time trying to get the only person he has ever loved to want him. He can't handle rejection, he's never had to before, he doesn't know how to handle any of these feelings, the good, the bad, the rotten, he's a confused and vulnerable mess and he hates it. And then here comes Danny, the man who not only stole his beloved's heart and is holding it out of his reach, but also is everything Johnny could have been, he has everything Johnny could have wanted; freedom, friends, a normal life, the girl of his fucking dreams. And not only has he come here to throw all of that in Johnny's face, but he has attacked his mother and wants to take the only person Johnny has ever loved away from him.
And Johnny just sees Red.
And then, maybe a few days, maybe a whole ass week later, Virginia breaks in, tries to save Maria, and is murdered on the spot. There's no way she survives that house, Maria has the Grandpa Pass and I honestly think Johnny would start slashing if anyone went for her, and we see Uncle Hands pop 'round for a cuppa just as Virginia tries to escape, he is GETTING her ass. Few days after that, the Gang show up and all are killed bar Maria. Whether or not she survives the Family is something we don't know. But she never escapes them. I have my personal headcanon on what I think happens to her, Johnny, Sissy and Nancy once the Gang are dead, but that's for another time. But as it stands, Maria knows Virginia is dead, that all of her friends are dead, that her little sister is dead, but likely never finds out about Danny. Because she'd either have to find his body (and, knowing Johnny and Nancy, he's either in the sunflower patch or Devil's River by now), or Johnny would have to tell her. And he'd rather die than do that.
Idk, just how I personally see things, I wanna reiterate that as with all of my posts and analysies here, it's all my personal interpretation of events and none of this has been confirmed by Gun or anyone associated with them, none of this is canon and please do not mistake it as such, I just adore this game and Maria/Johnny/Sissy as characters and think about them way too much.
Lemme know what y'all think though!! I've building my own personal timeline and 'who kills who and in what order' list, so if folks wanna hear about that or have any questions or anything else from me, please let me know!!
Also I promised I'd tag @alittlebitofeverthang in this so here you go!!

i'm curious: since mav is bradley's legal guardian (permanent, I assume) does that mean he's probably on shore assignments (or top gun, i guess) for the majority of his naval career instead of what he does in the original canon (quits top gun, never goes back to teach after that first time, presumably is on deployment a lot before he gets in trouble for something and gets put in the test pilot program?) that's an interesting prospect to me since it seems similar to a lot of pre-tgm fic, where mav just... like, stayed at top gun after '86, and never left, but obvi in most of that, he didn't have a kid to take care of. i mean, things probably change a lot after bradley... maybe cuts ties in the 00s?? if the pulling papers things still happens, but with all the family support and no mention of carole ever explicitly telling mav in the beginning about not letting bradley fly, i'm also curious how that plays out too since it's also probably v canon-divergent. and also — how do u think ice's career trajectory goes? ive seen many takes on how he got to compacflt lol
Hey nonnie! Whew, buckle up, I have a lot of thoughts.
They're going to be at Top Gun for a while, but they won't be staying there. Ice will come back later on, but Mav will be doing other things. This is going to be long and rambly so if you want to read (and aren't bothered by vague spoilers) more under the cut!
With wars coming up they're going to be shifted around back to active duty flying, particularly in Desert Storm. Mav figures out a way to make it work but he refuses to let Ice go without him, and Bradley gets it because he's a military kid. They also aren't going to always be together; actually, they spend quite a few years apart, which is going to hurt my heart to write.
They try to stick to the West Coast. I don't know how much you know about the Navy, but the two main hubs are San Diego and Norfolk, Virginia. In real life they shifted Top Gun out to Fallon, Nevada, but since in the canon of the movie it's still in Fightertown it will be staying there. Most Naval Aviators on the west coast are actually stationed at Lemoore, a base in the middle of California which is a bit of a shithole if my cousin Jay is to be believed, lol, while the east coast aviator hub is Oceania, Virginia. Aviators go through cycles of on a ship, leaving a ship, and then into fleet replacement training to go back on a ship. As soon as my cousin the aviator gets a good night sleep I'm going to pick his brain more about it. If anyone reading this is an aviator or knows one hit me up! I adore my cousin but talking is not his superpower. I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS.
Anyway to answer your question it's going to be a bit roundabout. IRL you have to have a plan for your dependents in case of deployment and Mav gets it figured out with Ice's help as for who will watch Bradley which will be a whole other can of worms but I don't think Mav or Ice are the type to watch their friends go off to war without them. I haven't fleshed it all the way out but Mav is going to CHOOSE the test pilot path, mostly because it keeps him close to Bradley, and he's going to be doing some special ops shit because in my brain that's literally the only reason the kids in the movie have no fucking clue who he is even though they've all been to Top Gun and walked past his picture EVERY DAY in the atrium, haha.
He's still Mav so yes he will still be pissing off Admirals.
As for Ice, I haven't figured out exactly how I want to get him there I'm still doing research. I do know that they have to command ships so at some point he'll get a carrier most likely because he's Ice and who the hell better to hand a carrier to, in my opinion. He leaves the sky fairly early in his career if you look at the whole span of it, partly because flying is something he loves but doesn't define him like it does for Mav, and this way he can keep Mav up there doing what he loves while he also gets to climb the ladder. It's a lot of politics which I hate so I'll be grumpy about having to research all that shit but I mean COME ON, it's Ice. Of course he gets a fucking Fleet. I also headcanon that the Joint Chiefs are beating his door down and he's just like that Obama eye meme saying THEN PERISH because he likes being able to go to the ocean to escape them.
Anyway back to the Navy, not sure if you or anyone who is into Top Gun knows this, but Ice is quite literally AS HIGH as you can go in the Navy. There hasn't been a Fleet Admiral (with the five stars) since Nimitz died in '66 and has only ever been held by four dudes: William Leahy, Ernest King, Chester Nimitz, and William Halsey Jr. (names you may recognize if you know your WWII Naval history but I digress). So basically four-star Admiral is IT, like that is the top of the ladder, unless you get asked to join the Joint Chiefs of Staff and work directly with the president. Tom likes to be in charge of things so I think the Joint Chiefs would be hard for him - they have no direct control over the Navy at all and it's a desk job in Washington D.C.
Maybe one day he could become the Secretary of the Navy, but I don't know if I can see Tom doing that, tbh. They have to be 5 years removed from military service at minimum. So I dunno. Still up in the air as far as Tom! Right at this moment he's being an asshole on an aircraft carrier in 1987, so there's that.

*Noah’s POV* When I woke up the next morning Ellie was still sleeping, she had no blankets on her and it was taking everything I had to not run my hands over her ass that was covered in lace. Fighting my thoughts, I got up and decided to go grab us breakfast. I quickly threw on a hoodie, grabbed my AirPods and headed out the door. I put my headphones in, listening to some samples of new music we had been working on. It was nowhere near ready for the world to hear, and I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with it yet. I was thinking of doing a revised deluxe album because I had written a lot after Ellie left that felt like it belonged in this era. It was hard to me to want to close this albums chapter, it had given me so much and helped me grow.
I didn’t get very far listening to it when my phone started to ring, my feet froze when I saw it was Matt. I drew in a sharp breath before answering him.
“Hey…”
“That didn’t take long.”
“I’m sorry, I should’ve talked to you but -“
“I knew she was going back to you but was I even out of fucking Canada before you called her?” “How did you even know?” “You’ve had your location on this whole time.”
Shit. “I had to tell her how I felt, I’m sorry.” “You should’ve fucking waved at me when our planes passed each other bro.” “What the fuck do you want?”
“To say that and to ask if your meeting is about the idea of moving...”
“What makes you think that?”
“Last time someone said team meeting it was because Ruffilo wanted to move back to Virginia.”
“I have to do this, she has too much tied up here to move in with me.”
“And you don’t? Our whole band’s headquarters is down there.”
“You’re not there and we do just fine.”
“But you’re -“
“There is nothing that will make me stay there, got it?” I felt myself shaking from how irritated I was getting. “Everyone is going to have to realize that my life with Ellie is just has important as this band now.”
“Make the meeting for 6pm your time. Some of us might not have girlfriends but we’re still busy.”
He hung up, causing me to curse under my breath. I figured he was going to be hardest to sell this to, the other guys probably wouldn’t care but I wanted their input. I’m not losing Ellie again and I want to be around her as much as possible. Also I loved it up here, I never got recognized and if I did, I got left alone. I felt like I could finally live the quiet life I dreamt of, and even better it would be with Ellie. I’ll always love LA and what it gave me, but it still came with baggage and noise you couldn’t drown out. Shaking off that god awful phone call, I headed into a local coffee shop and got us iced oat milk lattes and breakfast bagels before heading back home.
Home.
Something I still couldn’t believe was real. *Ellie’s POV* I woke up to the sound of the door closing shut causing my body to shoot out of bed thinking Noah left. I guess my pstd from Matt was still there, lucky me. My heart soared when I saw Noah standing in my kitchen holding bagels and coffee for us. I still couldn’t believe this was real and that he was here with me again. He noticed me standing there as his million dollar smile appeared, if it wasn’t for this wall I’d be on the floor by now.
“I hope I didn’t wake you.” “Kinda.” I smirked as he passed me my coffee, “it’s the perfect way to wake up though.” “I agree.” He beamed, kissing my forehead. “I don’t want to dull the mood but we should talk about the whole moving thing.” I sighed, knowing he was right. We both sat down with our breakfast at the table, neither of us knowing where to start. There was nothing I wanted more than for him to be here with me, but I didn’t want to jeopardize his career or make it inconvenient for the band. At the end of the day, he wasn’t going to be a couple states away, he was going to be in another country.
“Noah, is this a bad idea?” “What do you mean?” I shifted in my seat, grabbing his hand, “I don’t want to make things hard for you and the band. I know being in LA makes the most sense, especially when it comes to recording new music. I also know how much you hate flying, and I worry if you have to fly more you’ll get exhausted and burn yourself out.” “It’s definitely crossed my mind.” He paused to take a small sip of his coffee, “when we talked about this last year, I had a plan already in mind…do you want to hear it?” I just nod. “I was hoping to sell my home in California and buy something up here we could share. I’d put a recording studio in it, we could have a backyard and a pool for Liam and whatever else we needed. Having a recording studio here would help because then I can tweak things and work on them without going to LA, or the band can come up here. Steven has mentioned he wants us to have a Canadian distribution centre for our merch so here would be the perfect spot because we could run it.” My heart jumped into my throat, “We?” “If you wanted a distraction from Nursing, Steven could use a lot more help.” “Wow” I breathed. This went from just having Noah in my apartment to us having a house and possibly working together. “If that’s too much I understand.” He sighed, looking down at my hands. “It’s just been in my mind for a year, and now that I’m here again I want nothing more than to have that future with you finally.” This man was all in for me and I wanted nothing more than to give him everything he wanted. I got out of my chair to go sit on his lap. His somber eyes followed my hands that pushed his bangs out of his face. My own eyes studied the pattern of his freckles before I gently kissed his nose. “Let’s do it.” His eyes widened. “Really?” My smile told him everything he needed to know. His hands wrapped around me as he stood up and spun me around, causing me to laugh uncontrollably. A million I love you’s fell past his mouth and I returned the favour as the moment was filled with complete bliss. Everything was about to fall into place for us and we could finally start our future together.

When a rose turns black Chapter 18.
A/N: Gif isn’t mine. I found it in pinterest. Also, mentions of blood, So reader discretion is advised.
“The Hand of Darkness”
A large Obsidian Castle was in the heart of Tle’ktiva. An abandoned land of Virginia. Its people abandoned due to the harsh conditions, and the shortage of water and food. Thus, They better abandon it for a better place to live.
The Obsidian castle didn’t lose its charm and beauty. Even though, It had been centuries since it had been built. It’s still the same as the people who had abandoned it. Unaffected by time or erosion.
The Castle is decorated with Obsidian from top to bottom. Silver accents on the windows and doors, giving it a touch of dark royalty. Its towering spires, adorned with intricate designs, pierce the heavens as if reaching out to the celestial objects. The castle’s stone walls are imbued with Andesine gems. Which gave a glowing effect from a distance - Making it look as if it was kissed by the eerie glow of red lights that dance like ethereal spirits.
The winds of the north howled and whispered. As if it were singing of pain and melancholy. The sands that covered the place are dark and unforgivable as if were kissed by the Virginian sun, Much for Mariuz’s taste and style.
In the Obsidian Castle, Mariuz sat on his throne. The throne room is similar to the Castle’s outer design. The walls are covered with various of red-blood gems and paintings of Mariuz. The floor is covered with red as if were a sea of blood, And the dais on Mariuz’s throne room, Is decorated with black gems and small blood-red spirals, giving it a dark royalty vibes to match the Castle’s dark aesthetic.
Maruiz was still sitting on his throne like a King. He was looking at the paintings of him. He was bored and unhappy.
Then she came, A beautiful, tall woman with long glossy black hair decorated with the finest gold hair accessories – A face that makes the hardest of men falter easily, A curvy figure makes the mouth water, She wears a dress of old Kuwaiti fashion trimmed with gold sequins in a line from top to bottom. The golden embroidery on her bodice resembled thousands of dancing fireflies. Long, graceful sleeves, Edged with frothy golden lace, Flowed like waves lapping at the shore. The neckline of her dress, just like the dress of a temptress, was adorned with the finest of gold jewellery. And finally, Paisley shawls patterns on both sides of her red dress – Just like a gracious tapestry woven with golden strings, That was made with love and passion. That dress — It exquisitely fit her smokey brown eyes. She was desire-given form.
She trekked confidently to Maruiz as she smiled widely at him. Her lips – As red as blood. The clacking of her red heels – A sensual song to the ears.
She stopped in front of him. “You called for me? Sir.” She asked seductively.
“Are you done with your ‘playing time’?” He pointed and asked. His tone is unamused.
“Yes, My lord,” She smiled innocently at him.
She blinked, For a second, She saw beautiful red houses nestled in a small village and their vibrant warm hue shimmered in the sunlight. In a place far away somewhere. For a second, she thought she recognised it – just like somewhere far in the deep recreational of her mind. She blinked once again. Then it was all gone, Just like a mirage. She is adamantly sure, She saw this place somewhere. Somehow.
Her mind is an empty canvas. Despite, The glimpses she couldn’t get the whole picture.
Maruiz's loud and piercing voice cut her unending stream of thoughts. She looked at him and smiled once again.
“I see.” He finally replied as he surveyed her to every single detail. “You are free to go,”
She grinned. Showing her pearly white teeth. “Thank you, My lord,”
And with that, She walked away, her heels clacking, their sounds fading into the distance.
Mariuz, His gaze was on the direction that she she departed from. Much to his dismay, She started to have glimpses of her past — her memories refused to fade, As her old, real self.
Maruiz cursed loudly. He didn’t care if he was heard. His plan is starting to crumble — His world is crumbling, Sooner or later, She will remember who she was. And — She will comes for blood.

The early morning sun quickly climbed in the sky. Its warm orange-yellow ray bathed the sky in golden radiance. The orange glow of the vibrant sun spread throughout the sky, quickly filling the sky and warming the early morning air.
Aliyaa groggily woke from some noises nearby. She was disoriented due to her just waking up minutes prior. She stifled a yawn, extreme grogginess and fatigue were weighing her down. She suppressed the urge to go back to sleep because she didn’t want to hear these annoying sounds again.
In the distance, An animal, perhaps a goat, bleating hauntingly, It reminded her of the horrible story she heard from her uncle a day prior. It was about a goat that had eaten its owner. Aliyaa’s body shook, Her skin crawled and she is uncomfortable. Her body trembled with fear.
She forcibly closed her eyes. Her mind, Instantly brought an image of a scary goat – blood dripped from its teeth – Its white fur drenched in blood too. Its face was an image of horror, black beady eyes devoid of emotion – razor-sharp horns ready to pierce her and kill her.
The sound of the goat's hooves hitting the ground echoed through the air, growing louder and louder with each passing moment. As Aliyaa heard it approach, her heart began to beat faster and faster, almost threatening to burst out of her chest. Her breathing quickened, coming in short gasps as she struggled to keep her composure. Despite her efforts, she felt herself becoming frozen as if she were a block of ice.
she saw the silhouette of a goat, its eyes glowing with an eerie light. Trembling with fear, she could hear its hooves scraping against the ground, creating an ominous rhythm. She quickly buried herself inside her blanket. She couldn’t bear to look at that goat – Just like it was possessed by an evil spirit. As she lay frozen in terror, the goat's haunting bleats echoed through the place, sending chills down her spine. Aliyaa couldn't shake the feeling that she was being watched by something malevolent, something far more sinister than any ordinary goat. She recited every prayer she remembered. She hoped beyond hope that the goat leave her alone.
Sheer curiosity took the better of her. She peeked her head outside of the blanket. She saw a white goat. It stood 20 feet away from here. It seems young and lively, Its white fur glimmering in the early-morning sun. It has slender and delicate legs that it seemed the slightest breeze could send it flying away – small and short horns that undoubtedly would not be sharp enough to pierce through something, perhaps, Like a skin, Its eyes are a pool of glowing topaz.
Unexpectedly, Aliyaa laughed out loud. Her laughter was due to her realization that her fear of a harmless and cute animal like a goat was unnecessary and stupid. She had panicked for no reason, her fear and panic were irrational.
She took some leftovers of rice and bread. She offered it to the goat. The goat happily ate the food offered by the nice human in front of her.
She was looking at the goat while it was eating. She was smiling and happy. Admiring the cute animal while it is eating. Her attention was focused on the goat until she heard the voice of a man.
A man in his late 40s came. He has light brown eyes. A Khaki skin tone as the sand of a Virginian desert, He has a comforting feeling to him. He is handsome - A bit taller than an average male Virginian - He is standing 6 and a half feet tall. Making his height almost 190cm. He wore traditional shepherd attire. Simple brown robe and white pants.
He smiled at her. “My name is Samer and I apologise for the inconvenience.” He said sincerely. “My goat always roams away from the herd.”
Aliyaa smiled back at him. There was no harm done, The goat was peaceful and harmless, It made Aliyaa happy; having it around her. She was familiar with goats and sheeps. She always helps her father in herding them. So, she isn’t new to this whole herding thing.
“My name is Aliyaa, nice to meet you Samer and don’t worry.” She replied. Her tone is calm and soft. “There’s nothing to apologise for,”
Aliyaa’s father: Hadi Aepel, He came with his brother Massoud, In tow. They looked at the man and his goat. They didn’t look they just woke up from sleeping.
Hadi surveyed the scene in front of him with his eyes. “What’s going on here?” Hadi asked.
“Sir, I just came to return the goat.” The man answered. His tone is genuine and sincere.
Hadi nodded, His brother Massoud didn’t say anything. He just looked back and forth between his brother and the man in front of them.
The man bid them farewell and left them. His goat trotted behind him. The trio smiled as they looked at Samer and his friendly goat.
The trio, blissfully unaware that they were being watched by a dark entity — Two hands holding an onyx crystal ball, His cold, unforgiving slate-eyes gluded on it, Anzir, grinned cruelly as he saw the scene in front of his very eyes.
“Truly, Ignorance is a bliss,” He muttered to himself, Then he burst out laughing. His laughter resonated around the place. It was so loud as if it was shaking the place with its intensity.
Anzir, The current aspect of Darkness, decided spy on the trio for a little longer. He rarely shows interest in people. But unfortunately for the trio, They piqued his interest; and his attention isn’t something that one should attract. When they do, It is about to get devastating.
May the Remained-One helps whoever Anzir set his gaze on. For, No one can help them and save them for his darkness.

Jay, darling heart. Granted is boozy wistfulness: Bradley and whiskey, please? Oh champagne 🥂
Cass, my sweet BB™! This order gave me a whole new headcanon! I'm firm in the camp that Bradley is an island hopper vacationist. The man loves water, sand and sun!
However, I can see him wanting to visit Appalachia every now then. He is from Virginia, after all. Maybe it's the North American weather but feels like an autumn trip. He gets a couple bottles of his favorite whiskey and tucks himself away in a remote mountain cabin.
I did take a little liberty and went with a bourbon whiskey. Wild Turkey just felt right. 🥃

My dearest Zelda,
Unfortunately I write to you with sad news from our home. Thus far Henford had been spared from the great Spanish flu traversing the world, but our luck has run out. Your brother, only 17 and strong, caught the sickness. As this is usually who the virus takes first, we feared for the worst. All of the hospitals were full, so he remained at home with Virginia and myself.
He lay motionless for hours, only to come back to life, maddened by fever and crying out for us, although we remained right in front of him. Virginia monitored his vitals constantly, using her medical expertise from the war with great skill, and insisting that the two of us take every precaution so that we wouldn’t fall ill ourselves.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I am afraid that I proved quite useless during the whole ordeal, and I’m unsure how I would have fared without your sister. I stayed by Isaiah’s side helping Virginia for as long as I could until fear overcame me, and then I had to excuse myself from the room to regain any sort of composure. Yet through it all Virginia maintained a calm determination, her concentration never broken by my cries or Isaiah’s fevered dreams.
Finally, Isaiah’s fever abated, and he awoke in truth, asking for water and speaking coherently for the first time since he had fallen ill. As I held his hands and looked into his eyes, I knew that he would survive this ordeal and go on to live the life that he is meant to have.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Our cousins the Webbers were not so lucky. My uncle Joseph contracted the sickness soon after Isaiah. By the time I arrived, it was too late to do anything but help Elaine cope with the loss. As much as I loved my uncle and all that he has done for us, Elaine’s cries hurt me the most. How I dread that she now knows the pain of widowhood as well.
But her sorrow is that of true love, her mourning born of a lifetime of happiness. For grief is love with no where to go; it is the continual feeling of closeness with someone who is no longer there. Yet it means that we have also felt love in full bloom, so I know that Elaine, like myself, will come to live with her grief, for it means that she can keep her love alive with her for the rest of her days.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mere hours later Wallace’s war widow Maggie succumbed to the disease as well. I’m afraid that Virginia blames herself for her dear friend’s death, as she spent so much time nursing Isaiah that she didn’t even know of Maggie’s illness until it was too late.
I think back to the day when Maggie gave birth, and of Virginia’s constant, fearless care. I know that Virginia must think of this as well, and that she feels it was her duty to have saved her dear friend again. Yet I know in my heart that she saved your brother’s life, and I hope that this can help to allay her guilt in time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Most tragically of all, Maggie’s death leaves her young son Wally orphaned. With no one but Elaine left in that huge farmhouse, I’m unsure if she’ll be able to look after him. But Virginia has taken a fondness to him, as he looks so much like his parents, even at the young age of five.
In the weeks since the tragedy, Virginia has spent every spare moment with young Wally, rushing to Webber farm after work to teach him chess or taking him to Downton Henford so that he may feed the ducks in the river and watch the waterwheels turn. I believe that his presence brings your sister some solace after the many hardships that she had endured.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Elaine and I spend much of our time together now, two old widows who’s lives have been sad but incredibly blessed. Spring comes quickly over Henford, and we often sit on the porch of her farmhouse just the way we did when your father and I first came to this place. It is funny to think of you there on that porch with us then, still so young and blissfully unaware of life’s trials. How the world has changed and grown since those years.
I hope that the new world has brought you all the excitement and healing that you sought, and as always I look forward to your next letter.
Your mother,
Florence Darlington

Here is the third of the posts I'm making that detail my thoughts on every episode of The Magnus Archives. This post details my thoughts on episodes 31-40, the last episodes of Season 1. I've absolutely loved this final quarter, and documenting it has been a really fun (and kind of traumatizing but I'll get to that) experience.
Please keep in mind a few things before you read this.
1: This post is LONG. Like I mean LOOOOOONNNGG. If you read this all in one sitting, I will be both humbled and concerned for your wellbeing, so just...keep that in mind.
2: Obviously there will be spoilers for all of the first season, so if you haven't listened to that, steer clear. If you have listened ahead of Season 1, which I'm assuming most people reading this have, please don't spoil any future episodes for me :).
3: I recommend reading my posts on previous episodes before this one, as I will make reference to them a few times. There is a link to my masterpost of them above the cut. With that, enjoy! :)
- Episode 31, First Hunt 🦌
Statement of Lawrence Mortimer, regarding his hunting trip to Blue Ridge, Virginia.
Jonathan Sims is the only guy ever. The man walks into his office, probably sleep deprived and without any caffeine in his bloodstream, does the best impression of a jolly old English man he can muster for twenty minutes straight, sings his little heart out at one point, and then proceeds to call the story about someone being hunted bullshit while he stares at the ceiling in dread of the evil sex worms hunting him. Btw, I will admit that last bit was a little annoying. Usually I’m fine with Jon calling statements dumb, as I think it adds to the loser old man twink vibe I get from him, but when he straight up sees a similarity between one paranormal occurrence and another, and one or said occurrences is haunting him in real time, his denial just came off as kind of frustrating, especially considering how he usually does pick up on connections between statements. Ok enough about Jon (I just love/affectionately hate him so much I’m sorry), more about the actual story. Well firstly, the portrayal of America was genuinely kind of perfect. I’m glad that more people around the world are able to learn about the horrors of The Appalachian Trail. (These specific horrors don’t get the sparkles, they’re just that fucked up.) I did also really like the whole role reversal with animals hunting humans, it oddly reminds me of some of the themes in Episode 30, but the flavor and execution is very different. I do also wonder if the presence of a lycanthrope somehow connects to the vampires in Episode 10, since I usually group those two monsters specifically. And much like the vampires, I actually really liked how the lycanthrope was portrayed here, it had a lot more intelligence than the average werewolf, where the human and animal forms are usually entirely different minds. Also, it not being able to die was…genuinely really fucking scary with the way it was described. And while I do have a distaste for hunting, I did genuinely feel pretty bad for Lawrence and Arden, neither of them deserved what happened to them. Finally, there’s the ending of the episode, which was…yikes. It’s genuinely quite shaking to see Jon this terrified, like he’s really started to realize how bad things are getting. I always love seeing him outside of when he’s reading statements, and I just UGH I WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT YOOOOUUU. Honestly that’s probably my only kind of big frustration with the podcast. I mean, I still love the statements obviously, and they’re clearly working hard in the world-building and foreshadowing department, so it’s hardly affecting my enjoyment, but episodes like Colony and A Distortion are some of my favorites in the show so far, and it just makes me want to see more of what’s going on at the institute, and what the people who work there are like. Hopefully more episodes like those ones will show up soon, as I’d like the season to end on a special note. Well, aside from that, this was a very solid episode, and given the title of the next episode…well, I think my wishes will be granted soon. (JANE PRENTISS STATEMENT SAVE ME!!!)
I just realized that I’m basically writing my own statements here whoa.
- Episode 32, Hive
Statement of Jane Prentiss, regarding a wasps’ nest in her attic.
….The Jane Prentiss statement saved me, but NOT IN THE WAY I WANTED IT TO. (LIKE, IT WAS PHENOMENAL, MIGHT JUST BE MY NEW FAVORITE, BUT FUUUUUCCCKK.) Firstly, I think part of what made this statement so amazing was how it was framed. This is definitely the most cryptic story so far, valuing symbolism over a concise structure, but I actually felt like that worked perfectly here. Since Jane is practically deteriorating while writing this, it feels like she’s contemplating things we couldn’t even imagine. While also being aware of the true horrors she has now become witness and host to. And mentioning the symbolism, MY GOD IS IT GOOD. The Flesh Hive (and no, I’m not calling it the sex worms anymore, that ship has sailed) in particular is such an interesting concept, I mean, it’s more of a concept incarnate than any other horror so far. The way it reflects the metaphorical hive, the insect ecosystem that exists all around us, which in turn reflects a sort of toxic codependency and need to be loved, which is also reflected through Jane, and it all ends up as a combination between the concept of love and disgusting insects, it’s just, UGH I LOVE IT SO MUCH. On top of that, this is absolutely my favorite of Jonny Sims’ performances so far. He captured Jane, along with her shift into becoming a part of The Flesh Hive extremely well, but also mixes it with the genuine terror that Jon is feeling. Speaking of which, while it was certainly cathartic to see Jon admit that what’s happening is very real and very paranormal, it was also very terrifying in its own right. Either something very weird is happening in the archives (I mean, obviously SOMETHING is weird but Jon could be…well, he certainly isn’t normal, but, like, he doesn’t have to be PARAnormal, you know?), or, Jon has had some VERY weird experiences in his past, which I think is more likely. What they are, I don’t know, but I think they’re something similar to this, considering how he said that something in the statement had gotten to him. (Stay safe my poor little meow meow babygirl-) As for the story outside of just themes, I don’t have much to say honestly, it was still fantastic, just very simple due to the abstract nature of the episode. All I’ll say is that it was obviously terrifying, and I feel really bad for Jane. I don’t care if she was canonically “toxic” or whatever, she still deserved better than what happened to her, and the level of emotional distress she was in was absolutely chilling. (On the bright side though she kind of slays as an evil worm lady but I digress.) Anyways, the last thing I have to talk about is theories, because MY GOD, this gave me quite a bit to work with. (This is becoming a massive wall of text so I’m going to make a cut.)
Firstly, I think it’s time to go back to my theory about cults and higher powers. There’s been at least one instance of a cult via The People’s Church of The Divine Host, but due to characters like Gerard Keay, the other guy in the hospital, Sarah Baldwin, potentially The Lukas Family, potentially Jurgen Leitner, likely The Circus of The Other, and more, I feel like there are multiple cults and multiple higher powers, potentially at odds with each other given what happens in Episode 12. And I think this applies to this episode, as Jane was a practicing witch, and The Flesh Hive seems to be some kind of higher power as well. I think other higher powers might be The Anglerfish, the growing darkness, something associated with eyes, maybe “Micheal”, and some other potential candidates. Overall it does feel like the podcast is leaning towards the eldritch kind of horror (which is my absolute jam btw), so I hope I’m right in my assumptions. As for what these higher powers may want, I feel like maybe they’re…punishing humanity for their hubris? Like, I know that assumption might sound like it’s coming from someone who can only view these sorts of things from a religious perspective, but hear me out, because you have episodes like Do Not Open, Alone, Lost Johns’ Cave, Confession and Desecrated Host, Freefall, Skintight, First Hunt, and even this one with how Jane is practicing witchcraft, where characters who are comfortable in situations that many would find scary, and are then scared while in that situation. The only possible exception is in Arachnophobia, where Carlos is already scared of what he’s haunted by, but you could argue that he was being punished for a potential curiosity with spiders he had when he was younger. So yeah, those are some small thoughts I had about how some of this all ties together, but I had a couple of other small observations as well. Firstly, the presence of spiders in Jane’s attic. She implies that they exist separately from The Flesh Hive, so I do wonder if they tie into what happened in Episode 16 at all, especially considering that the worms were in fact mentioned there. Secondly, there’s her mention of “fools chasing fractals”. If that doesn’t tie into Episode 8 with Ivo’s father, I don’t know what does. Thirdly, her landlord was smoking a cigarette, which just reminds me of everything involving The Anglerfish (although I checked to see if he was mentioned in Ep. 1 like Sarah and no, he wasn’t.) And fourthly, one that was mentioned in the YouTube comments, Antonio from Ep. 11 was said to be working at a Crystal shop, had a somewhat similar experience where his mind was directly connected to ✨the horrors✨over a long period of time, and was also under a fake name. They said that maybe this would explain why that one guy looked at her sadly, maybe he was “Antonio” and knew what was going on, and while I’m not 100% sold on the idea, I thought it was interesting.
So…yeah. That was…an experience. Suffice to say, I am terrified. I’m terrified of Jane, for Jane, for Jon, for The Institute, and for my sanity as I delve deeper into the never ending rabbit hole that is The Magnus Archives. (I have 168 episodes left, Christ.) This episode is phenomenal, and there’s probably a lot I didn’t even talk about but…I think I’m going to lie down now, maybe get an exterminator contact ready just in case…auuughhhh.
- Episode 33, Boatswain’s Call ⛴️
Statement of Carlita Sloane, regarding her work on a container ship traveling from Porto do Itaqui to Southampton.
Oh thank god some time to breathe after last episode. I mean…not really, but you know what I mean. I’ll start off with what is the obvious highlight of the episode: TIM!!! I said earlier that I feel like he has bastard energy, and I was…kind of right about that? He’s nicer than I expected though. As for whether I love or hate him…yeah I’m leaning towards loving him, he’s fun :). Also, I absolutely love how they retconned errors in previous episodes at the beginning, that’s super funny and a really clever workaround to discrepancies. But how about the statement? Well, I will start with my one slight critique, that being that this is one of the least scary episodes for me so far. Which like, I feel like Rusty Quill knows that, since Jon outright says there’s nothing really paranormal here, but it’s ultimately whatever. Still though, the atmosphere here was really well done, the whole vibe of a creepy boat was captured very well through the writing, no outright big scares in the episode, but it did a very good job keeping me on edge. One of the moments that did genuinely make me pretty damn scared was when Carlita was digging through the shipping containers, and was then called out to the lifeboat by the rest of the crew. As someone with a very deep fear of being caught doing something people don’t want me to do, (even though my cowardly ass would never even bother), that certainly made me feel really uneasy, even though she was fine in the end. There’s not a whole lot to say here honestly, other than a few observations and theories. Firstly, I’m really glad we got some more insight into The Lukas Family! Episode 13 is still a favorite for me, so it’s nice to see connections to it showing up. This episode didn’t really reveal that much, other than that they help fund the institute, which like, is good way to keep them from investigating the weird shit the family seems to get up to honestly. And given the presence of the fog, as well as the overarching theme of isolation present with them, if I didn’t think they were responsible for what happened in Episode 13 already, I absolutely think so now. I also do really think that Evan was a family traitor of some kind, since he was very social, which opposes what the family seems to stand for. Lastly, I’ll mention my thoughts on Sean Kelly. I definitely believe that the crew of The Tundra killed him, but I also wonder if he was responsible for what was making the crew so antisocial, as that would explain why they started acting social after his death. It also makes me wonder whether or not I’m supposed to believe that the captain was involved or not….hm. Overall a good episode, I liked it, but there’s not much more to say on it.
Ok there is actually one other thing I did actually notice in retrospect. It’s very interesting to me that despite this being arguably the LEAST paranormal statement so far, despite the connections to The Lukas Family, Jon still seems very certain that something is weird here, more than he usually is. It really feels like everything with Jane has given him a new perspective…I’m scared…
- Episode 34, Anatomy Class 🍎
Statement of Dr. Lionel Elliot, regarding a series of events that took place during his class, ‘Introduction to Human Anatomy and Physiology’ at King’s College, London. Statement taken direct from subject.
So, fun fact, before I really got into TMA, this was one of the episodes I had heard mentioned here and there, and I knew nothing about it, other than the fact that people really seemed to like it. And now that I’ve finally listened to it myself, I can absolutely see why. Firstly, I’ll start off a bit by talking about Dr. Elliot, as I thought he was a pretty interesting character. I just kind of liked his general vibe, and his voice actor did a fantastic job at selling how distraught he was by the experience, although it does make me hope he’ll be ok after everything that happened to him. I also loved his conversation with Jon at the beginning (he’s awesome for respecting the tape recorder btw), and while it is a bit of a shame to see Jon go back to not really believing a case that much, I still felt like it was decently justifiable here, as the evidence admittedly isn’t the best. (Also his reaction to the apple was fantastic lmao.) But as for the actual statement, I agree with the common sentiment that it was…kind of cute? Like, don’t get me wrong, it is still a damn scary scenario. The weird shit the students get up to, the fact they are very clearly not human, their general vibe, and the implication that they killed a professor who failed to teach them are all horrifying, but…I don’t know, there’s some very real charm to this one as well. Like, even though their motives for wanting to seem more human are probably more sinister than this, I do like to imagine that they’re just wanting to relate to humans, so they decided to…enroll in college I guess. Like, if Dr. Elliot vibed with them more, this could have spun off into a very fun, slightly morbid college comedy. I do also love how genuinely polite they were as well, like, all of this considered, I absolutely get why people love this episode, it’s just genuinely very creative and a lot of fun. As for theories, honestly I don’t have that many, although someone in the YouTube comments (which by the way, I REALLY need to thank everyone there for being very resistant to spoiling, it means a whole lot for new listeners like myself), stated that there were some odd similarities between certain things that happened in this episode, and some of the stuff found in the bags in Episode 5. It makes me wonder if all of the bin bags contained discarded research materials being used by the students (which actually makes the art student jokes people were making in the comments even funnier in retrospect), and if the “him” Alan Parfitt came across was one of the students. Oh, and all of the bone imagery kind of reminds me of Episode 17 as well, and the teeth stuff kind of reminds me of Episode 10 (maybe the anatomy students are vampires…hm.) Outside of that, this was just a really fun and great episode, and I hope that Dr. Elliot comes back in the future just to see where this potential plot line could go.
- Episode 35, Old Passages 🔨
Statement of Harold Silvana, regarding discoveries made during the renovation of the Reform Club, Pall Mall.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH I’M SCARED!!!!!!! Man, this final quarter has been REALLY solid so far, like, the fact that Hive, Anatomy Class, and now this are so close together is genuinely stunning. Once again, there is QUITE a bit to unpack here, so I’ll take it one step at a time. I’ll start by talking about the elements of the episode that are…less brainrot inducing, as that’s easiest to discuss. Firstly, I remember that Sasha mentioned a “Harold Silvana” case back in Episode 24, so it’s really cool to see that brought back here! But moving on from that neat little tidbit, I’ll start talking about the actual statement. Yeah this one was just really creepy. The story itself was a bit shorter than other statements, but it still did a good job at creating dread. The hallways underneath the club were genuinely very unnerving, and it was also sad to see Alfred die, I thought that Harold’s comment about there being little to no one to remember him was pretty depressing. I also do wonder if the reason the members of The Reform Club didn’t want the architects to get involved with it any further was because they were aware of the hallways, and maybe making use of the strange forces down there. I mean, it just feels kind of fitting to have a high society like faction be involved in some shady business, you know? Also, I noticed that Jon’s vocal delivery of Harold was quite in line with his usual voice, which just makes me feel like they would get along if they met, idk. But honestly, while I think that the basic plot of this episode is still good, it PALES in comparison to the amount of connections it provides. Firstly, Jurgen Leitner. This fucking guy. You know what, I think the guy who made the rant about him was right, why DOES he have so many fucked up books? I…genuinely don’t know what to think of this guy. On one hand, his irritable nature that’s displayed here, and his desire to have all of this dangerous literature do raise some red flags, but it’s also possible that he only wishes to keep these books safe from those who would use them from bad purposes, as there’s no real record of him doing anything bad with them. Still though…he unnerves me, but it was cool to finally have him actually appear in a statement. Secondly, GERARD KEAY LET’S FUCKING GOOOOOOO. I don’t even KNOW where this guy stands morally, but I just get happy whenever this weird little emo man shows up and I don’t know why. Anyways, I…think that this helps piece the timeline surrounding him together…a bit. What I can say for certain is that the Leitner he got here is the same one Mary Keay uses in Episode 4 (which might also be The Boneturner’s Tale, but I doubt it since that one revolves around bending already existing bones, while this one is about creating new ones), so it must have come into her hands some time after this episode. But outside of that, all of the things this episode did that surrounded him was just make me more intrigued, honestly. After Episode 12, I started to think that he was against some evil forces, like his mother and the other guy in the hospital, but that he probably still served his own forces (given the creepy eye symbolism, which I do believe is evil given the church in Episode 20 and the crypt in Episode 23), so he comes off as kind of an anti-villain to me. And this episode didn’t really change that, although I do question his motives for grabbing the Leitner. He’s seemingly been established to have a negative relationship with his mother as an adult, but given that he was younger here, I wonder if they were on better terms in the past, and he actually gave the Leitner to her out of his own will before a potential fall out. Eh, food for thought, I just think he’s really neat. (Making a cut because this is very long now.)
Thirdly, we have Robert Smirke. Firstly, I checked and he was indeed a real person! I’m very glad to see the podcast slightly demonize a British Museum architect, that feels deserved honestly. Ok, I say demonize because this guy built a bunch of terrifying hallways, but granted he could be good idk. Assigning characters strict moral alignments at this point is pretty hard tbh. Anyways, I don’t have that much to say about Smirke himself, other than that I think he was definitely involved with at least one of the major cults we’ve seen, and that he might have ties to some of the recurring creepy churches we’ve seen so far. …I might have to check if the real person actually worked on Hither Green Chapel or not, just in case. What does concern me is the hallways. Obviously, thirteen is a bad sign (I know it’s technically fourteen but like you get the idea, it’s framed as thirteen in the script when the architects enter the central room), but someone in the comments pointed out odd similarities between the hallways and previous episodes. Ones that stood out to me was one that was described as entirely dark, another with cobwebs in it, and the first corridor, which was described in an EERILY similar manner to Lost Johns’ Cave. I don’t know, it very well might just be me going insane, but I feel like the passages here are meant to reprisent certain…feelings throughout the series. Maybe not more sentient entities like, for example, The Anglerfish, but like, I could see a corridor similar to the weird foggy graveyard from Episode 13, or the dreams from Episode 11. Basically I think the passages are meant to connect to the more environmental horrors we’ve seen so far. It’s just…AGH THIS PODCAST IS DRIVING ME INSANE AND I’M BARELY COHERENT ANYMORE. Ok, I’ll wrap things up with some brief comments on the ending. Oh dear god the ending. Firstly, is it wrong that Jon’s surprise at the worms in his office made me jump more than anything else in the show so far? Like, considering how terrifying these statements are…that just feels like a disservice from me to the writers and directors, Idk. But secondly (ignoring the worms because I’ve gone on long enough about them)…Breekon and Hope…hi….oh no. They…they were very creepy…I’m guessing they’re twins because they’re very Shining-core to me….and considering that they are the same men who showed up in Episode 2 (or at least prominent to the delivery company those men were a part of)….I do not like the idea of them giving a package to Jon. Needless to say I do not want Jon to open that package. I think that is a bad idea. And I do not like how they encouraged Martin to turn off the recording. I…I think I’m going to go to bed now…
Speaking of bed, I’m sorry if this one wasn’t very coherent lmao. I’m just really tired right now and…yeah this podcast is pulling me into a very deep rabbit hole that I do not think I was prepared for as I thought I would be. Well, anyways, hopefully my incoherency at the very least makes it clear how insane I am about this episode. (Oh also I checked and no, Robert Smirke did not work on Hither Green Chapel, but I still find his work on churches interesting…)
- Episode 36, Taken Ill ✋
Statement of Nicole Baxter, regarding visits culminating in the fire that consumed Ivy Meadows Care Home in Woodley, Greater Manchester.
Unlike last episode, which is just making my brain spiral until it turns to goo, this one was definitely a bit more digestible. That being said…AAAAGUHFGHHGGHHHHHJJJJKKKKKKKKKNGDFGHHJJBFFHHJJNN!!!! I am in LOVE with how everything is coming together, it’s just, UGH it’s so satisfying! The amount of recurring elements, the fact that so many theories and bits of foreshadowing are being validated, it’s just…YES! I LOVE THIS PODCAST SO FUCKING MUCH AND I’M BOTH EXCITED AND TERRIFIED FOR THE END OF THE SEASON! JANE IS COMING HOME BITCHES!!!! Ok…sorry I just needed to get that out of my system, now I’ll talk about this depressing ass statement. Because yes, this one was really messed up! Seeing such a lovely sweet place where the people were able to find community even in their somewhat dire circumstances get absolutely torn apart by an even more terrifying version of death from rot and illness, which already majorly affects the elderly in real life….yeah it was upsetting! I mean, it was good, fantastic storytelling as always but DAMN. Also as someone who does have quite a notable fear of just…generally gross shit, this one did hit home quite a bit. The part where it’s implied Nicole cut off her own hand due to the constant pestilence coming back to haunt her (which did actually remind me of the history of the house on Hill Top Road, as well as the ghost spider…hm…), was genuinely kind of hard to stomach. Honestly the only thing about this episode that WASN’T terrifying was the humor of Nicole’s uncle keeping his estranged partner’s name in his business out of spite. That was actually very funny. So yeah, overall a very terrifying statement, but what about…✨the connections✨ (yeah they get the sparkles as well, who are you to judge). So starting with the obvious, the similarities to The Flesh Hive and Jane Prentiss. I do indeed think that the mysterious force here is either the same thing or something VERY adjacent to The Flesh Hive (but also the yellow shit in Episode 18), and that this episode 100% confirms that Jane isn’t being controlled or anything, but is dead, and the hive is just controlling her body now (which like, was already pretty obvious, but this just confirms it to me.) However, one thing that concerns me about these similarities more than anything else is John Amherst. From my point of view, it was implied that Mr. Amherst was consciously responsible for the spread of the illness, which is in stark contrast to Jane, who only started spreading her worms due to her infection and loss of sanity. This makes me thing that maybe John was somehow involved in getting the hive to absorb Jane, but really who knows? I do admittedly think it would be more interesting if Jane was chosen by the hive itself, but still, I think it would be interesting if her apotheosis was a part of some greater plot. Another thing that ties to Jane that I’m kind of curious about is Nicole’s opening words about fear, which Jon compares to Jane’s statement. It just got me thinking about some other theories which then made me think…what if the eldritch horrors that seem to be behind everything, the things that all of the cults worship, are meant to represent different fears. What if that’s what the different passages in Episode 35 represent (so like, claustrophobia for the first passage, and then stuff like the dark, falling and spiders for other ones.) This theory still needs a LOT of time to flesh itself out, but I’ll put a list of what I think some of the eldritch forces are after I write about the rest of the episode. I might be crazy, but given how “fear” is reoccurring throughout as a theme, more so than a lot of other horror, I have to wonder about this.
Ok, another thing that rattled my brain was…TREVOR THE FUCKING TRAMP? I THOUGHT YOU WERE DEAD? At first I thought he and his companion might be The Fairchilds from Episode 21, but the reveal of his actual identity was a complete shock. Not that I’m complaining though, he’s one of my favorite statement givers so far. Either way, I’m very curious about his presence here, as well as the identity of his companion, and what role they might serve in the plot. Considering that it’s implied they burnt down the care home, and that Trevor hunts vampires for a living, I feel like these guys are probably trying to combat the horrors, but much like Gerard, I wonder if it’s for entirely moral purposes. And finally we have the ending. Oh boy the ending. I know I’m always saying “this is terrifying” or “the archives are in deep shit now” or something along those lines like…whenever ANYTHING relevant happens at the institute, but like, can you blame me? This is mortifying, I do not want my favorite workplace comedy cast to end up in grave danger, and yet I have to cope with the fact that they probably already are. So, the lighter isn’t the most concerning thing ever, I mean, the spider web pattern is interesting, and given the prominence of cigarettes (as well as Gerard’s lighter in Episode 12), I know I should be suspicious about it. But honestly? I’m more concerned about the table. Because…of course I am. I don’t know what this table does, I just know that it is creepy, that anything Breekon and Hope deliver is bad news, that the implication they gave it to Graham Folger is also terrifying, and that I do not like it’s presence in the artifact storage. Why I am I even saying this, of course I’m scared, you should already know that I am not prepared for whatever comes up in these last four episodes, and beyond. End recording or whatever the fuck.
Ok, so as promised here’s what I think some of ✨the horrors✨ are, and what episodes I think they might appear in
- The Anglerfish (1, 28)
- The Sky, I Guess (4, 21)
- The Flesh Hive (6, 22, 26, 32, 36, maybe 18)
- The War Incarnate? (7)
- Heat aligned entity, called Asag? (8, 12, 18, 20)
- The darkness (9, 15, 25)
- Eyes (4, 12, 20, 23)
- Something aligned with isolation (13, 33)
- Bone Thing (4, 14, 17, 35) (This could be the same thing as the sky due to their connection with Leitners)
- Spiders (16, 22, 32, 35, 36 via the lighter)
- MEAT (18, 30)
- Whatever The Circus of The Other serves (24)
- “Micheal” (26, maybe 8?)
- And then probably something I’m missing due to the 14 corridors
I excluded some things like shapeshifters and vampires, since they seem to be species, Breekon and Hope, The Keay and Lukas Familes, Jurgen Leitner, etc., because they all seem to be servants of ✨the horrors✨ rather than horrors themselves (although I do think “Micheal” is an exception based on vibes alone), stuff like the table and the coffin, which are more like creepy artifacts than anything else, and then other stuff like whatever was trying to get inside Paul McKenzie’s room, which I just don’t know enough about. But…yeah! The ideas are very scattered right now, but I feel like I’m slowly piercing together what the horrific forces of this world might be (on the assumption that’s what we’re dealing with here, which I see no reason not to honestly)
UPDATE: Ok so after some thought I’m not too sure about the idea of ✨the horrors✨ literally representing different types of fear. I think that could still be the case with the passages, but the things I presume to be eldritch beings (like whatever is behind all the bones), while obviously not devoid of themes, are just a bit too specific for this to work. I still think the things I listed are likely to be big bad eldritch horrors, I just think I was a little bit off with what I think they represent, and I need to rethink my steps. Also, this is all on the assumption that there is more than one big evil here. I think it’s likely due to a lot of Gerard’s dialogue in Episode 12, but yeah…this theory only works if another theory is also true. Either way, I do think that the podcast will really delve into fear as a concept, and the psychology behind it, as time goes on, based on themes alone. Ok I’ve talked long enough, on to episode 37.
- Episode 37, Burnt Offering 🍼
Statement of Jason North, regarding the discovery of an alleged ritual site found near Loch Glass in Scotland.
If there was any episode that proves a shorter one isn’t necessarily a worse one, it was absolutely this. Because while the statement is short, and comparatively simple compared to a lot of others, DAMN. I really liked this one. However, I’ll start simple with the stuff that happened outside the statement. Firstly, man…poor Jon. It’s been really interesting but also…really sad seeing his mental state deteriorate over the course of the season, and I hope that he’ll at least be able to get some rest at some point in the near future, although it does feel like a storm is going to come soon. I also found Martin’s scene here interesting as well, as you can tell that he’s still feeling nervous after what happened in Episode 22, and that things haven’t exactly gotten better. The other thing of note is the table, which…yeah, it’s still worrying. I don’t know WHAT this thing does, although I do think it’s interesting that it shows up in an episode that seems to involve the heat related entity from Episode 12 and the Hill Top Road statements. This is because I strongly suspect that the box Ivo found beneath the tree belonged was actually the missing piece of the table, so I feel as if maybe it connects to the heat entity. This might also mean that Graham’s stress could’ve been due to the heat, as well as the monster that stole his identity, although I do have to question where exactly this would fit in with Episode 12. Still though, this does all intrigue me. I also find it curious that the box Ivo found contained an apple with spiders inside (which also kind of brings back thoughts about Episode 34), and that the other thing Breekon and Hope brought to Jon was a lighter with a spiderweb design on it. I’m connecting the dots! (I’m not connecting shit, am I.) But as for the statement…yikes. This is up there with Jane’s statement as being one of the most visceral, one where you really understand the mental state of the author. Like, you can FEEL Jason’s pain here, and having him get genuinely angry with the institute at the beginning was kind of chilling. Obviously it’s not the first time that’s happened, but usually the people who got angry with the institute were ones giving statements live, while here, you hear that anger coming from Jon’s mouth and it’s…off. Also, can I just say that this guy got screwed over so badly? He literally just dropped a bottle of old milk on the ground, and then as punishment he had his entire life literally set ablaze, and had to kill himself to protect his 4-year old son. That’s genuinely like…so fucked up and it’s not even something I can joke about! Really the only thing I can joke about is the mention of Pine Martins being tiny and adorable, which to me is meant to say that Martin Blackwood is tiny and adorable (if that wasn’t already obvious to me.) God I love Martin so much….What was I talking about? Oh yeah,✨the horrors✨. So I guess the only thing left to talk about now is connections.
Well, as I stated earlier, I think the eldritch entity associated with heat that has likely appeared multiple times before appears here as well, obviously. And if Ep. 12 didn’t already give me suspicions, this one absolutely solidified that there is a cult serving this entity. It doesn’t say much about the history of the house on Hill Top Road or what was going on with the man in the hospital, but it’s interesting nonetheless. But of course, the most interesting thing here is the bottles with pictures of Gertrude Robinson in them. …Oh dear. Firstly, I learned that this scene was actually inspired by the experiences of a real person on an old Rusty Quill forum, which is really cool! But aside from that, I’m wondering…is this meant to tell us how Gertrude died? I initially thought her presence here was meant to tell me that she might have been more evil than I initially thought, but now I’m kind of wondering if she was against the cult that serves the heat, and they killed, or at the very least attempted to kill her via a ritual in the woods. And if that’s the case, why not do the same with Gerard, who also seemed to be against this cult? Unless the brain tumor was somehow caused by the cult? I. HAVE. SO. MANY. QUESTIONS!!!! There are three episodes of this season left….aaaaaaaaaAAAAAAA-
Unrelated side note: A thought that popped into my head earlier was that maybe Breekon and Hope were the people who stole the calliope organ in Episode 24. I mean, it seems in character based on what we know of them, and it did end up in artifact storage like the table…Also, I found Martin’s description of them really weird? Like, what do you MEAN they were normal, mother fuckers spoke like the twins from The Shining! AND WHO THE HELL IS ROSIE??!! Ok goodnight :).
- Episode 38, Lost and Found 🏺
Statement of André Ramao, regarding a series of misplaced objects lost over the course of three months.
Ok yes, the vase was absolutely a gaslighting homophobe, there, I SAID IT, ARE YOU HAPPY NOW?! (Ok but in all seriousness I think the fact everyone agrees this is the vase’s motivation is absolutely hilarious, if it ends up being canon I will laugh my ass off.) Anyways, enough humor, because things are SERIOUS now. I’ll give my overall thoughts on the statement first. Honestly, when you remove the absurd nature of what’s going on, this one was genuinely very visceral and heartbreaking. I’ve seen people say that this one is a commentary on the fear of losing things, and while I absolutely agree, the main takeaway I got was the commentary on materialism, and how if you place too much value on material possessions you will lose the things you truly cherish. I think you can really tell that through the way André treats his husband through the story. Like, he talks about getting into a fight with him, and being angry when he started trying to contact doctors, and while I’m sure there was obviously love there, I don’t think André realized how much his husband mattered to him until it was too late. It’s not the most subversive or complex metaphor of all time, but I still think it really works and that it’s pretty damn powerful. It hurts even more with how he does eventually get all of those material possessions back, but still loses his husband. And while I COULD complain about the show’s first somewhat prominent gay couple being buried, I know that’s it’s not because of their sexuality, but because it’s the fucking Magnus Archives, where no happiness is allowed. I also find it concerning that André knows the vase is still stealing things (…writing that down really puts into perspective how nutty this podcast can be), it makes me wonder if it might be in the artifact storage somewhere…oh no. Mentioning artifact storage, what about Mikaele Salesa? So, I checked to see if he appeared in any previous episodes, and he did, back in Episode 14! Unfortunately, that doesn’t really give us much information on him outside of his appearance, but it does prove to me that he’s at least somewhat important. I will say that he really did remind me a lot of Breekon and Hope, which does make me wonder if there’s a connection between them. The only thing that I found to be a very notable difference is that Mikaele has some level of fear towards ✨the horrors✨, while Breekon and Hope seem do be in direct service of them. That doesn’t necessarily make Mikaele a good person, I mean, I definitely think that he knew about the vase, but just pretended not to to save his own skin, but he might not be like…an evil mastermind that wants to spread ✨the horrors✨ wherever he goes, which I get the vibe of from a lot of other characters. But outside of that, there were a good few odd similarities to other episodes. I found it interesting that the war-related items in Mikaele’s warehouse were from The American Revolution and World War 1 respectively, as those are the wars that the only war-related episodes so far have taken place in (those being 7 and 29.) I also definitely think that Mikaele had Leitners in his possession, and I felt like the description of the vase’s pattern was very similar to that of the table, which should be more relevant than ever. Some other things that the vase reminded me of was the impersonator from Episode 3, what with the way that it successfully gaslights everyone aside from the statement giver and…debatably the archival staff, although I don’t think they count since as far as I’m concerned none of them were directly involved with the events of these statements. I initially thought that the creepy hand was supposed to be David, but someone in the YouTube comments said that it could be the same hand from Episode 15, which is….concerning, given how scary that one was. I do wonder if that means this statement connects back to The People’s Church of The Divine Host though, since I felt like that was involved with Episode 15. But with all of that out of the way, there’s the end of the episode. I am hyperventilating so bad.
So yeah….Jane came home I guess. I’m…very interested to see whatever happens in the next episode. All I know is that I’m absolutely in what you’d consider the season finale now. I do have a couple of thoughts here, outside of just being terrified. Because obviously, the way that Jon just smashed that spider is very similar to the events of Episode 16, which brings multiple concerns. Firstly, I initially thought that Jon’s decision to kill it was a bit stupid given his knowledge of that statement, but then I remembered that it was almost as if an external force was compelling Carlos Vittery to kill that spider, so I assume the same thing happened to Jon. And if so….please don’t wrap my boy’s corpse up in webs :(. Secondly, since the killing of the spider causes the worms to conveniently burst in, I wonder if that was why the mysterious force was compelling Carlos to kill the spider. I mean, the worms WERE in his apartment, so maybe killing the ghost spider (which I assume is the same one we see here) is somehow capable of summoning the worms, meaning that….Carlos Vittery could be a part of The Flesh Hive?! Or at least there was an attempt to make that happen like with Harriet Lee? …Sometimes the connections really make my brain melt. And finally, I’m now wondering if the reason as to why the spider even showed up was due to the lighter Jon received from Breekon and Hope, since it had a spiderweb design on it. I mean, they obviously have a knack for giving people things that lures ✨the horrors✨ to them, so I would not be that surprised if this theory ends up being correct. (Also, if Jon was to set the worms on fire with the very same lighter that might have summoned them to him…that would be a massive power move that would make me very happy.) But more than anything, this just gets me thinking even more about that damn table. WHY IS IT HERE? IS IT GOING TO SUMMON THE HEAT TO GET RID OF THE WORMS? DOES THAT MAKE BREEKON AND HOPE A NEUTRAL PARTY IN THE GRAND SCHEME OF THINGS? AM I EVER GOING TO GET ANSWERS?! …..I’m not prepared for this season finale.
do you think this is what the vase looked like

- Episode 39, Infestation 🧯
Original recording of Jane Prentiss’ attack upon The Magnus Institute, London.
WHAT?! WHAT THE FUCK?! WHO IN THEIR RIGHT FUCKING MINDS DECIDED THAT YOU CAN JUST END THE EPISODE LIKE THAT?! LIKE, IN RETROSPECT IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN OBVIOUS THAT THE SEASON FINALE WOULD BE A TWO-PARTER BUT GOOOOOOOODD!!!! So fun fact, I was so scared going in to this episode that I took two days off listening to mentally prepare myself, and even after that…THIS ONE SCARED ME MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE!!! Did I like it? Absolutely! It’s at the very least in my top 4 episodes, in fact, I think it might only be barely beaten by Episode 32, and it’s very close competition. As someone who’s really liked all of the stuff that happens in the institute, and with the institute staff, this episode was a dream come true, and with the way things are being set up, I’m really excited by the prospect of there being more episodes like this in the future seasons. But…jfc. This is….a LOT. Now, due to the fact that this episode is structured very differently than anything else before it, and because I have so much to say, I’m just going to dedicate different paragraphs to a specific recording each, so I can make my thoughts clear and concise. Starting with…
The second recording. Look, the first one is basically a bunch of chaotic screaming and worms, I don’t know what else you would expect me to say. So the first thing I want to address is that we finally get to see members of the archival staff interacting as a group. I already did feel like their comments on one another give a good look at their dynamic, but it was nice to see it in person, despite the horrific and perilous situation they’re in :). But what are some other things. Well, even though this is shown in later recordings in the episode, I’ll just put it here that I really like how Martin is characterized here. The scene with him in Episode 37, as well as most of his scenes here really do show a new level of confidence and just flesh him out really nicely. There’s some morbid humor in him carrying around a corkscrew to get rid of the worms, and…yeah! I just really like him, he’s definitely one of my favorite characters so far. The main beef of this recording however is the stuff we get from Jon. Not only is the overarching theme of the episode, that being the desire to be remembered, conveyed really well through his dialogue here, but it felt like this scene came with some…nice closure, I guess. We’ve seen Jon become less and less skeptical as time goes on, especially in this final fourth of the season, but it felt really gratifying for him to just straight up admit that what’s happening is real. But there were also quite a couple of intriguing things that he said. Firstly is his comments about Gertrude. He makes the suggestion that she could potentially be alive, and while I doubt that due to her presence in Antonio’s dreams, and the fact that her supposed date of death was when The People’s Church of The Divine Host did a creepy ritual, it does just make me more curious about what truly happened to her. All things considered, I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that ghosts exist in this universe so…I don’t know, maybe we’ll see her come back in a way, but I don’t think she’s…entirely alive. The other curious thing was the reveal about the statements. We already knew that something prevented them from being uploaded to computers, but now we know that this only applies to statements that are real. This not only means that Jon has…basically no excuse at this point to be a skeptic, but that I am getting VERY curious about the tapes and the statements on a fundamental level. I’ll touch on it a bit more later, but it does feel like there’s more to the framing device of the podcast itself here than meets the eye, and it is EXCITING me. Anyways, on to the next recording. (I’m still just contemplating that THIS episode came after the homophobic vase one. Holy shit.)
Tim….please never die. I mean, I know it’s funny that I say that since he was VERY close to death here (and could still die in the next one but like…I doubt it because of the fact we already probably have one major death…I’ll touch on that later…), and also because I’ve only known him for two episodes but like…he’s so cool man I can’t help it. “Statement of Joe Spooky regarding sinister happenings” is by far the funniest line in the podcast so far, perfect for the season finale, and…I WAS SO WORRIED FOR HIM UAAAAAGGGHHH!!! Like, the death flags were hoisted HIGH, so I’m glad he survived this episode….even if it probably came at the expense of another character, unfortunately. Ok, I’ll get to that when I get to that. Really not much more to say here other than “Tim is funny and I’m scared”, although hey! It’s Jane! I mean it’s really cool to finally hear her voice but she had one line so I don’t know what else to add. Regardless, time for the kind of wholesome but also ominous as shit recording!
Look, while they are obviously still in peril, while there are certainly some very concerning implications here, while they are still arguing…this one was kind of nice. Obviously Jon and Martin are very different people, and are still quite a ways off from sorting out all of their differences, but…this was very nice. Considering how much Jon belittles Martin in early S1, having him talk to him like this, in a situation where they are both equals, it’s genuinely very gratifying, and probably the most earnest Jon has ever been, as well as the most confident Martin has ever been. Obviously I love it when Jon is a mean asshole and when Martin is just a little guy, but this felt like really good character development for both of them. But outside of that, the most interesting thing here is a look into Jon’s psyche, and why he acts a skeptical as he does. Firstly, the fact that he actually joined the institute due to a genuine belief in the paranormal does make me wonder…what the hell happened to him. I mean, the institute doesn’t seem like the most fun place to work at in the world, nor the most mainstream, so like…I’m getting a lot more curious about Jon’s past now, and the same goes for Martin’s, maybe even more since we learn even less about his reasons for joining the institute than with Jon, and more about his reasons for staying there after Jane forced him into hiding. But obviously, the most ominous thing to me here was how Jon said he felt like he was being…watched. This could mean…genuinely so many things, but to me, I felt like the meaning was a PERSONAL ATTACK. Like, it doesn’t HAVE to be, but given that the podcast already has some decent potential for meta elements, are…are they trying to say that I’M the one tormenting Jon?! Because, like…yeah, I have wanted to see him start admitting that the statements are real! And I have been watching him! (or I guess listening, but…shut up…) In fact, it’s especially damning for someone like me, because I don’t listen to TMA in the background or anything, I sit my ass down, stare at the screen and start taking notes. I…I don’t know where this whole thing will go but for now I’m offended. (But like, if this metaphor ends up being true that I must say…that is some BRILLIANT writing.) There was also Jane’s weird actions here, with how she was seemingly destroying statements and papers. This isn’t exactly surprising, after all, she did suggest that the reason The Flesh Hive wants Jon dead is because as an archivist, his job is to understand things, which the hive seemingly doesn’t want unless it opens its arms to someone directly (very finally fitting if I might add), but still…it’s curious to me. Considering how this whole recording gets you to think about what’s up with the statements, I feel like maybe The Flesh Hive knows a bit more than others do… Finally, we have the ghost conversation, which is really funny and a great character moment for Jon and especially Martin, but like…what if though…what if…
ELIAS BOUCHARD IS A SKETCHY ASS MAN. This guy has only shown up ONCE before this episode, and when he finally returns he is…unnervingly chill about the whole situation. Like, he is just…NOT concerned about the attack, he seems a tad bit too comfortable with the prospect of Jon and Martin dying via C02, and he’s just…he’s just really fucking sketchy. I can’t remember if I’ve stated it before, but from what we’ve seen and heard of him, I’ve always gotten the vibes that Elias knows a lot more than he lets on. Like, in the way that he’s been working at the institute long enough to know that there’s something really weird about it, (which btw, thinking about how weird the institute is does really get me thinking about it’s founding a lot more…my brain is melting…) and he wants to stay away from the weird shit as far as possible. Some suspicious things with him are his reluctance to antagonize The Lukas Family which is…understandable, I guess, if they help keep the institute around, but then there’s the fact that he clearly knows more about Gertrude than everyone else, but is being REALLY quiet about it, exemplified via what Jon says about him in Episode 11. And then there’s the fact that later on, Sasha mentions how he has a tendency to change the subject and…yeah…I don’t know how to feel about him. Honestly all I have to say about this recording corresponds with Elias, so I’ll just move on to the next one.
Ok, so since these recordings are pretty short, and Sasha’s last one is….woah…I’m just going to cover the last two that have Jon and Tim in them briefly here. As expected, Tim continues to be comedy gold. Him bursting through the wall and being super chill (and not in the creepy Elias way) was honestly just want I needed. I did NOT need him pulling…something off though, but…whatever. Also the reveal of Martin recording poetry was fantastic, I need that to be a spin-off ASAP. Magnus Protocol? Never heard of it. The men of the archives are the only men to ever exist and they all deserve their own show. Anyways, after Tim completes his re-enactment of The Shining, they head into the tunnels (which I did not know were a thing), and I get scared yet again. I…am very concerned for Martin, I do not like how he ran off, and I do not like the noises that play at the end of the episode. That is all I have to say here. This is an absolutely terrifying way to end the episode, but it is frustrating in the best way, and if I wasn’t shaking as I write this I would have immediately jumped to the next episode. But…there is one other scene, one that honestly, would’ve worked just as well, if not BETTER, as an ending to the episode. That is, of course, the one scene that has terrified me more than anything else in the podcast so far. The scene that stars:
That. Mother. Fucking. Table. I thought it was at least…somewhat safe. I thought that it would tie into…Hill Top Road, or something, that it would just be something for Jon to glean some information from later on! But I was a fool. I should’ve known that the Anatomy Class shenanigans were (probably) foreshadowing. I should’ve known that the GOD DAMN IMPERSONATOR WAS COMING BACK. JON! WHY DIDN’T YOU DESTROY IT YOU VICTORIAN BUFFOON?! I’m…I’m fucking shook man. I might have been fearful for Tim but…for a split second there, I thought everyone would make it out alive. I mean, we’ve seen Sasha in like, what, three episodes before this, and she only starred in one? She had to live so that we’d see more of her! But no…I got completely blindsided. Sasha James, this really cool character who I wanted to see succeed after her encounter with Bonyhands McGee, is most likely dead. It might sound like I’m genuinely upset with the decision, and while I’m absolutely sad and terrified, I do think they can go really interesting places with this. I mean, I’m going on the assumption that what happened to her is what happened to Graham Folger in Episode 3, meaning that we know have something impersonating her, meaning that she could be explored even after her presumed death. On top of that, like…what if the effect of no one recognizing a difference between the OG Graham and the “Not Graham” applies to Sasha! Because if so, this could be a genius example of having characters figure out something long after the audience being done really well! But overall…I’m mortified. As cool as these prospects are, there’s still a glimmer of hope in me that Sasha survives, that the archival team can deal with that fucking table as soon as possible. Which, by the way, I’m genuinely mad at myself for not catching on to that at first. I initially thought that the table had nothing to do with the main plot of Episode 3, outside of maybe increasing Graham’s paranoia, and that it was meant to foreshadow future events that tied into…idk, the house on Hill Top Road, given the box inside the tree. But nope! Apparently wherever the table goes, the impersonator follows! And if she is dead…man, I don’t know whether or not it’s a good thing that the thing she was afraid of dying from was not the one that killed her in the end… Outside of that, I mean, yeah, artifact storage was creepy as all hell, Sasha’s monologue made me go through five different emotions in the span of like…two minutes, and that one part, holy shit that one part. Hearing that weird noise, Sasha’s scream, and then a new voice repeating her last words it’s…uggghjhehehehjejejejjewjjekekwkekkdkwkekek. Wow, I hate this! I mean, I love it, but wow, I hate this! I mean, I love it, but wow, I hate this! I mean, I love it, but wow, I hate this! I mean, I love it, but wow, I hate this! I mean, I-
So..yeah. Good episode…I guess. I’m really scared. For everyone, Sasha especially. For everything, my sanity especially. I do not like the name of that season finale, it’s looking at me funny. I….I…I think I’m just going to go saw my foot off or something, maybe that’ll take my mind off of things. See you for the season finale! :,)
- Episode 40, Human Remains 🩹
Statements of Elias Bouchard, Tim Stoker, Sasha James, Martin Blackwood and Jonathan Sims, regarding the infestation of the Magnus Institute by the entity formerly known as Jane Prentiss. Statements taken direct from subjects.
*Sigh*. I have listened to 40 episodes of this god-forsaken, trauma inducing podcast. I have stayed up at night wildly speculating about the connections between episodes, trying to solve the greater mystery. And for what? Well, I regret to inform you that, in the end, it was all for…A FANTASTIC SEASON FINALE. HOLY SHIT I’M SO EXCITED TO LISTEN TO SEASON 2 YOU HAVE NO IDEA. I mean, I’m obviously terrified, what with the amount of setup here, the cold realization that ✨the horrors✨ are somehow just going to affect the main cast more and more in the future, and…so much more, but WOW. This finale absolutely delivered and if I wasn’t already on board to see how the rest of the podcast plays out, I absolutely NEED to know now. So, like with last time, I’m going to divide my thoughts via the multiple parts this episode is divided into, so I’ll be going over each person’s statement. And let me tell you…there is some stuff to discuss. Starting off with my favorite(?) enigmatic CEO, Elias Bouchard!
So yeah, Elias is still sketchy as fuck. Oddly enough, despite this being the most time spent with him so far, which don’t get me wrong, I’m really happy about, but…yeah, I still don’t trust him all that much. I guess I’ll start off by talking about some of the general information revealed here. So firstly, no one’s really doing all that well! I mean, it’s expected, but still, I feel really bad for everyone here. You can tell in the opening how scarred Jon is by what happened (both mentally and physically)…which makes Elias’ relative chillness all the more strange. Also, while it is once again pretty obvious, I would just like to pay some respects to the absolute queen that was Jane Prentiss. Rest in relative peace Jane, I hope you’re getting people to join the hive in…well not heaven, she’s probably gone to superhell, but…yeah. Still kind of sad she only got one line from her own mouth. But back to Elias, there are two things he said that really came off as…like, especially odd. Firstly is how he said he got tired of what Jon was saying about the statements. This is weird because like…that’s his job? That Elias hires him to do? It really does add to the vibe that he knows of ✨the horrors✨, but is actively trying to avoid them as much as possible. It feels like they’re setting up an interesting parallel between him and Jon, who looks like he’s going to really start connecting the dots in Season 2. It also just kind of made me think about the implications of something…watching Jon, and it wanting him to admit the statements are real, since Elias seems to specifically be annoyed by Jon’s recent lack of doubt, at least in my eyes. But the other thing that really unnerved me here was what he had to say about Gertrude. His reluctance to talk about her death is one thing, but the fact that he says he found the blood-covered office on March 15, when in Episode 25 Jon says she was declared dead on May 15, is…just really strange. It could be a discrepancy on the writer’s part but…I don’t know, it feels like one of them has to be wrong here. And either way, since they retconned past discrepancies in the opening of Episode 33, they could absolutely work with that here. So yeah, not much more to add other than that I don’t trust Elias.
Poor Tim :(. The guy has been so funny and chipper in all of his past appearances, but here you could feel how beat down he was. After getting worms in his skin and having to spend more time in quarantine simply for being funny, this guy just can’t catch a break! I mean, I’m happy he’s alive, because I was genuinely very scared for his life in the last episode but…man, his last words in this episode really did sting. Anyways, the main takeaway from this statement is the info on the tunnels. This is…really creepy and I’m sure we’ll get a deeper look into it in Season 2, as this whole episode feels full of setup for what’s to come very soon, but for now they are just a very strange place. The way their ancient architecture is described, the worms’ behavior down there, and the…door they were trying to form? What else is even in there? Hell, is this why The Flesh Hive really wanted to attack the institute? To discover some secret in the tunnels? I don’t know, but I care a LOT.
No no no no no no no no no no no no no NO! THE WORST HAS COME TO PASS! The chances of her survival was slim, but I had the smallest sliver of hope that she would survive, but NO! Sasha’s gone UUUUUUUUAAAAAAAGGGHHH!!!! What makes it so much worse is that WE KNOW, we’ve heard Sasha’s original voice, we’ve gotten a sense of her general vibe, the new her has creepy music in the background whenever she speaks, HER NAME IS LITERALLY “NOT!SASHA” IN THE FUCKING CREDITS. But Jon, Tim, Martin, they don’t! They don’t know, and I’ll be stuck having to watch them hang out with a monster that killed their friend for who knows how long! It’s excellent storytelling but GOOOOOD I’M SO SAD. And Not!Sasha herself, I mean…holy shit. She’s absolutely uncanny and terrifying, the fact that her tone and vibe are so noticeably different from the real Sasha, how she always responds with a “yes” to Jon, how she points out extremely obvious things, how she just…seems unfamiliar with things she should know about, just everything, it’s just so fucking scary! She’s just so..matter of fact, she’s like a robot in comparison to the real person. Honestly, her manner of speech is very in line with how I imagined the anatomy students sounding. But there are a lot of other weird things about this scene. Firstly, I think it’s curious that when “Micheal” is mentioned, Not!Sasha refers to him (and yes, I noticed she uses he/him, unlike OG Sasha who used it/its) as the one with “all the bones in his hands” which…almost perfectly lines up with what Ivo’s father said. I had my doubts about that theory, but now I feel pretty convinced by it. That just leaves me thinking about what connection he might have to the fractals. Now that I think about it, fractals kind of line up with the descriptions of strange patterns that have shown up, like the one on the table. And…well, given what happened, I can’t help but wonder if “Micheal” and Not!Sasha have a deeper connection to each other, especially since this is the first time he’s been brought up since Episode 26. (Maybe he’s impersonating the real Micheal…oh no that’s a whole new can of worms, pun not intended). Another thing is how Not!Sasha says Elias gave her a strange look. …THE MOTHERFUCKER KNOWS!!! WHAT IS HIS PROBLEM?! WHY?! Lastly, there’s some of the discrepancies that Not!Sasha has failed to avoid. Firstly, she should’ve been scarred by the worms like Jon and Tim but just…isn’t. Secondly, even though Jon doesn’t remember the original Sasha (which is…even more depressing when I put it into words…), he’s astute enough to realize that something is off with her. And finally, there’s the matter of the missing tapes. I checked, and they are indeed all of the tapes that Sasha appeared on. I think it’s likely Not!Sasha took them to learn about the role she has to play, but since there’s certainly something weird about the tapes, and this theme of truth being recorded on them…I have to wonder if she maybe stole them because the original Sasha’s voice is still on them, and you can straight up hear Sasha dying and being replaced on the one from Episode 39. With the logic presented in Episode 3, Sasha’s voice on the tapes should be replaced by that of Not!Sasha, but when you consider the framing device of the audience being people listening to these tapes, and the general weird things at play…I’m concerned. I think…I think Jon needs to get those tapes back as soon as possible. In short, I am very scared of the new archival assistant, and her mysterious connections.
MARTIN MY BELOVED!!! How is it legal for someone to be this sweet, he was genuinely so worried for Jon and I just want to give him a hug he’s so nice :(. But ultimately, as much as I feel for him, Martin is not the main focus here. The strange objects in the tunnels are not the main focus. The main focus here is the human remains. The remains of Gertrude Robinson. Wow. I…honestly thought it was going to take longer for her fate to come to light. I mean, there is still a lot that is obviously unknown, but to have her down here, confirmed to be dead, confirmed to be MURDERED…it’s making my brain go in so many directions. I guess I’ll start with the room she was found in. It’s…very concerning how similar it is to the archives. I don’t even know what it’s supposed to mean? Does it signify that the institute was built upon an older institute somehow? Are we not even going to bother checking out the tapes she left down there? I NEED TO KNOW. And, then, I mean, god the way she died. I was so convinced by all of the clues that she died some sort of gruesome eldritch fate, but hearing that she was simply shot…why is that so much more haunting. I mean, I have to assume there were still some weird circumstances surrounding her death as a whole, given clues in Episode 11 and Episode 25, but…it’s very concerning. And then there’s Jon’s words about this. Does that…DOES THAT MEAN THAT SEASON 2 IS A FUCKING MURDER MYSTERY?! BECAUSE I WOULD ABSOLUTELY LOVE THAT! Look, assuming that the murderer is indeed someone in the institute (which I say because Gertrude does seem to have made a good few enemies in her lifetime), then my fingers are already pointed at Elias due to how sketchy he is, but honestly…I’m afraid this is just another mystery that I don’t have to energy to fully crack right now. And Jon’s words at the end…please tell me he doesn’t resort to doing very stupid things that endanger his own life for the sake of the truth. Oh who am I kidding he probably will. But…wow, I’m just…I’m just so excited for Season 2.
So yeah…that’s Season 1 of The Magnus Archives. The fact that I already feel changed by this series, both for better and for worse, within the first season…it just gets me so excited and mortified all at once. There’s still so much story potential, so many mysteries to be solved, and I can’t wait to hear it all for myself. Honestly, the fact that there’s so many plot lines, and the only one to be kind of resolved The Flesh Hive and Jane Prentiss arc…that’s insane. So, I’m just going to leave a list of things I want answers on down here.
- The Anglerfish

So, there’s a wrap on Season 1? Do I expect all of these questions to be answered in the next season? Absolutely not. Do I want all of them to be answered eventually? Yeah probably. If you’ve made it this far, thank you so, SO much. Like, you genuinely deserve an award for reading all of my insane rambling. I’ll be back with my thoughts on the first 10 episodes of Season 2 in due time, but for now, thank you and bye :).

Okay, but the fact that Darrow is insecure and complexed by his guilt and his 'never being enough' issues in Golden Son, but ALWAYS respects Virginia? He would rather cut a hand off than ever disrespect her.
He is being difficult to her to keep her at a distance, but he loves her. Through all there is between them, against them, all there is within him...he loves her. I love them.
Dude!! I love this. YES. also the fact that he is constantly on the back of his mind remembering that he is not one of them. (ESPECIALLY in golden son) At any minute, in the future, he's "going to" have to "betray" them for the cause. These golds aren't his people, the whole reason why he's in this mess is because he is attempting to help free his people. And yet, here he is. Slowly falling in love with the daughter of his enemy. Of the man who put him on his road.
And yanno, his Howlers becoming his homies, so to speak.
But the heart wants what the heart wants. And Darrow's heart yearns for Virginia.
One of my favorite hetero ships, fr fr. Reaperstang has my whole heart.

I finally finished Light Bringer. Here's my thoughts (obviously, spoilers incoming):
-First and formost, RIP to the king of my heart, Cassius Bellona. The worst part about his death is that you know it's coming the whole book. You don't take a character like him, a former enemy, give him a solid redemption arc, make him the most ABSURDLY likeable character and source of all humor in the book, and then not kill him off. But still, I held out a tiny bit of hope. I really dreaded getting to the end of this book just because I knew it would be coming. But, you had to respect the way he went out at least. Dude's gonna be legend if that counts for anything.
-So, The Abomination was WORRYINGLY absent from this book, aside from a couple of mentions and that (maybe) he's Virginia's mysterious source of intel? Like, everyone is worried about how Atalantia is sitting around building up her power while everyone else is duking it out, but what about the Abomination? I know he's not anybody's most immediate threat in this book, but is anybody else extremely worried about what he's going to get up to in Red God?
-I was happy with the Virginia chapters we did get, but I hope she gets more time in Red God. Also, same to Victra. She was awesome in this book, as always, but like, I want to see you do even more destroying, girl. We love you. I also missed Electra.
-The Bromance in this book was next level, even by the standards previously set in this series. I loved having a little break from the relentless battles and death in Dark Age, to just get the dudes (and Lyria) hanging out and trying to work out their differences. This also helped get back some of the old humor I missed from earlier in the series.
-This was Lyria at her best in my opinion. She was great. I only wish we got to see more Lyria and Cassius because they were just so heart warming.
-Sevro is back! I loved getting to see the old Sevro make his triumphant return for the last third of the book or so. Sevro walking up to Gaia au Raa and just going, "shut up, crone," really made my day.
-Lysander has killed my favorite character of the book two books in a row now. And both times with a gun. I love how this dude talks about how he's secretly really good with a razor, but every time he's confronted with someone who's actually good at using one he just shoots them point blank. I know I've said this before, but seriously guys, fuck Lysander. I mean, even Atalantia is becoming more likeable than him. She may be an evil, power hungry tyrant, but at least she's pretty much honest about it. Everyone knows she's the worst and she barely bothers to pretend otherwise.
-Admittedly, it's been a few years since I've read the other books in the series, but this might be my favorite of the bunch. Pierce Brown really hit every emotional note and character perfectly in this one, and it felt a lot more balanced compared to the (necessary) bleakness of Dark Age.

MWII Operator headcanons: Specgru edition
Hello! I think the multi-player operators deserve more love, so here are some headcanons for the base Spegru team. This doesn’t included people who were in the campaign because there’s plenty of stuff about them already. The pictures are just screenshots of my game, lol.
Tumblr media
Jesus “Chuy” Ordaz
(the COD blog post I’m getting some of these full names from says his first name is Manuel, but his bio says Jesus?)
has terrible handwriting
but as my poetry instructor once said, “the worse the handwriting, the better the work”
and he does write poetry
been through a lot, but still a romantic at heart
really great with kids
Tumblr media
Gustavo “Gus” Rodriguez
you could not pay this man to shave his mustache
once he grew that mustache, he knew he could never go back
looks like a literal baby when shaved clean, like people will start asking "who let that preteen in here?"
really proud of his career and the fact that he gets to work with Special Forces since he’s not military (because technically there was no military for him to join)
will not bring up surfing, but has a bunch of cool surfing videos ready to go at a moment's notice. you know, just in case
Tumblr media
Zhiqiang “Zimo” Wong
precious bean, i love him
cinnamon roll but serious
doesn't mean he can't be brutal, he is a soldier
kind of intense overall, which intimidates some people
really cherishes platonic relationships
movie buff who might smack you if you say you don’t watch foreign films because you don’t like reading subtitles
Tumblr media
Kleópatros “Kleo” Gavras
(fuck, I accidentally deleted my notes on her. :( I’m sorry Kleo, I have to wing it!)
likes to dress up. will put on a whole fit and makeup just to hang around the house every once and a while
it's a nice contrast to her usual military get up
good at every sport
also very good a chess
Tumblr media
Nila “Nova” Brown
really great eyesight
misses flying, tbh. jumps at the chance to do some piloting for a mission
seriously considered becoming an astronaut
worked with Kortac briefly, but changed to Specgru as soon as her initial contract was up
(that one’s a deep dive for anyone who remembers that she was a Kortac operator during the beta)
Tumblr media
Sobiesław “Gromsko” Kościuszko
Polish pride (idk, everyone I know who is Polish or has Polish heritage is very proud of that)
plays some quirky instrument like the accordion or keytar or hurdy-gurdy
uses reading glasses
knits. while wearing the reading glasses. looks like a literal grandmother
Tumblr media
Enzo “Reyes”
will never admit it as a proud Canadian, but he doesn't like hockey
a Swiftie
flirts with everyone
pansexual, so no one is safe
(that's a joke)
(I'm not trying to do the "bi/pan people are sluts" thing)
(I just think this man is attractive and charismatic)
(and wants to share that with the world)
(blame the Valentine's day skin)
Tumblr media
Tse “Luna” Míngzhū
really amicable
will actually hit you up after saying "we should hang out some time!"
loves attending sporting events and cheers very loudly
it's not mentioned in her bio, but she grew up in Virginia, near Washington DC, so 9/11 probably had a big impact on her and her career choice
(pulling on my own experience for that one)
(not job experience, but growing up in DC suburbs when 9/11 happened experience)
lots of frustration with generic military gear because it's all way too big on her
Thanks for reading! My Kortac headcanon post can be found here.

I'm gonna preface this by saying this probably won't make sense and I'm just rambling about NE ships
I dunno what it is but NE ships are just so-
Like there's something sbput them. Something about the "I'll never admit I love you in any traditional way. You're the stupidest person I've met. I'd go to the ends of the earth for you if you asked. Just say the word"
Mass and Virginia! It's about the centuries of pining and drama and "Maybe he would love me if I wasn't me" And he already does! Mutual love they think isn't because of how differently they show love. Eventually realizing their different ways, and it dawning on them that yeah that idiots in love with them too. It's all the hardships and heartbreak and coming out the other side changed, but still in love. A quiet kind of love that was friends first.
Mass and York! They're literally so in love all the time. It's loud! Explosive! They'd kill for eachother. They'd rip out their own tongues before admitting it. Mass told him once "Nobody gets to kill you but me" And maybe it was taken as a threat but I can't stop thinking about the underlying "I will protect you. Please don't die". It's about the late night sessions, after one of them (York) has stumbled in drunken and bruised, and the other (Mass) Plays doctor and patches him up, and pretends theor heart doesn't ache that this is the closest they'll let eachother be. It and NY/NY it's about finally giving up being stubborn, and be vulnerable, or to suffer.
Speaking of NY/NY, their rivalry is everything to me. Mass is the enemy, NJ is the rival. They brawl all the time, they patch eachother up. They're so shit and yet they're the sweetest in the world. Jersey calls him "Rosie" infront of everyone, and York has to pretend he hates it. Quietly, when he thinks Jersey is asleep he'll call him his soulmate in every language he knows except Italian. Sometimes they're doomed fron the start, an on/off relationship they wish was more. Sometimes they're sneaking around the house, pretending their relationship is secret as they drag each other off to do the dumbest shit.
NJ/MA/NY?? Perfection. NJ teasing them about being lovey dovey and immediately getting flirted with.
Rhode/Jersey? Honestly I see them as a QPR. They're the best friends that never really said they're life partners officially, but everyone knows. They're shit talking buddies, they gather blackmail together. They'd hide a body for eachother but won't pass the other a charger. Them <3
Vermont and NH are also very <3 Quiet and unnoticeable, vs the chaos man very determined on befriending him. Either no one realizes they're together, or NH carries him in every room loudly announcing they're boyfriends now. Vermont is the reason, but he is very quickly convinced into doing chaos. They go on camping dates. Vermont is still traumatized from NH driving
Maine/Alaska, two very quiet people, very soft in their affection. They're the kind that bond instantly and then panic over any hint of flirting. Maine is too aware of it, Alaska is oblivious to both their attempts. They have my whole heart.
NJ/Connecticut! The lawyer man and his client he has to tell to stop hiding bodies. They're a disaster. Jersey is openly flirting and Connecticut can't take it. They're dancing alone in their rooms at the dead of night to avoid prying eyes. They're lying together under stars whispering "I love yous".
Delaware/Rhode/(Jersey)! They deal with the same shit. They defend eachother fiercely. They're going on boating trips for date night. They're fighting over Delaware's ego one minute and making out the next.
PA/MA. They're literally mom and dad. They're the parents of the NE fight me. I know Mary is parent vibes, but MA is at least the mom of the New England states. They're ranting to eachother about their idiot kids who fight instead of talking, ignoring some time in the past they definitely did the same. They fall in love over movie nights and gently moving the other from a desk to a bed.
I know I probably missed some but I'm running out of word vomit
I have thoughts on other region ships if you want that too
