imagine ranger Soup overhearing Carlos talking to TK on the phone one day, and Carlos is all "I'm sorry baby, this case is taking longer than we thought, I'm not going to make it home." *pause,listening* "Yeah, i love you too. I'll make it up to you, i promise." *pause, listening* *laughs a little* "Yeah and Lou too. I'll make it up to you both."

and ranger Soup assumes he's talking about his kid and he makes these "kids amirite?" comments when they're working on cases, and Carlos is just "sure. i wouldn't know, but sure" - which confuses ranger soup because he clearly heard Carlos mention a Lou, and he's married because he wears a wedding ring.

And he starts coming up with these insane theories that Carlos' wife has a kid called Lou that is not his, or that he's having an affair with someone with a kid called Lou - "But why would he be so close to his mistress' kid???"

And eventually Carlos tells him he's gay and married to the best paramedic in Texas (because why stop at Austin - surely TK's talents have a wider reach than that) and maybe invites him over for dinner sometime

(TK: are we having soup for dinner then? Carlos: 🙄😍)

And it's a nice evening, dinner is nice, TK keeps the soup puns to a minimum, but there's no sign of a kid. No toys, no kid sized clothes or shoes - nothing. And he's really curious but also doesn't want to intrude or maybe bring up something painful, so he says nothing and waits for Carlos or TK to explain. But they don't.

Until TK gets up after dinner and says he has to feed Lou.

And ranger soup is all 👀 Lou you say??? but gets even more confused when TK takes this little bowl of cut up veggies from the fridge... and walks over to this big terrarium... and takes out a lizard and sits down on the sofa with it.

"I know you don't want veggies Lou, but your dad forgot to buy mealworms last time we were at the store. And you had a cricket yesterday."

and Carlos just watches them like 😍 (he's grown to love his lizard son ok) and ranger soup is all "THAT is Lou??"

TK: Yes. Louis the second. Lou for short. Lou the lizard. Though he's technically a bearded dragon. It was Carlos' present for me when we got engaged. 😍

And ranger soup goes home that night and tells his family about his night and his weird ass new coworker and his husband.

It's hard to pick just one favorite Black character but the one I spend the most time thinking about (like everyday) is Ramona Royale from American Horror Story: Hotel.

She's a former Blaxploitation actress who meets the Countess, a vampire woman (played by Lady Gaga) at her hotel in the late 70s and falls in love with her and lets her turn her. They have a 15-year-long relationship but things fall apart and Ramona begins to date a rapper named Prophet Moses instead, who then gets killed by the Countess and so she spends the rest of the season plotting her revenge. In between their breakup and her return to the hotel, she also cares for her parents until they eventually die and she finds herself having to adjust to a world vastly different from the one she lived in before she met the Countess.

She's my favorite for many reasons, not least of all because she's played by my favorite actress Angela Bassett, but also because she is canonically bisexual and a vampire I mean how much better could it get? Even though I think the script did not give her enough to work with and she's kind of a side character, I think there's a lot of depth and complexity to her and Angela's acting alone conveys this so beautifully. Her inner conflict of wanting to hurt the Countess for how she hurt her but at the same time still being enamored by her because they once considered each other the loves of their lives. How she contradicts herself in an attempt to appear confident and ruthless even though she cares so much about the people she loves, like her dad and Liz, her friend, who's also a trans woman (tho unfortunately played by a man. No news that AHS has its issues 💀).

I just love exploring the different layers of her and possible like roots of her feelings if that makes sense. E.g. the show didn't tell us why her relationship with the Countess started crumbling but there are lines that imply that loss of other loved ones and grief had a lot to do with it. I love how she has me digging into 70s culture and Blaxploitation movies. I love her humor, I love her friendships with the other characters who live in the hotel, I love her strength in fighting for her survival, I love picturing her dancing in the disco with the Countess when they were still happily in love.

I'm getting emotional thinking about how much she means to me. She is bold and fierce and vulnerable and loving and gorgeous and funny and not afraid to go after what she wants. In her own words, she's a lady and badass. She's even a little shy at the beginning of her relationship with the Countess, and Angela has said that this was her first relationship with a woman and it was beautiful.

I've never been in the AHS fandom but from what I've seen she is very underappreciated, especially as a canon queer character, and imo she just always deserves more love.

Marie Laveau and Desiree Dupree from the other seasons are just as iconic to me but Ramona will always have a special place in my heart 💜

You just reminded me that I don't think I ever finished this season! I don't even remember Angela and that's a sin! God and she's so fine. Like whew Ms. Bassett 😍😤🤌🏾🔥😫 I definitely need to go back then, this sounds really... Wow like I missed a lot. I'm kind of sad I missed this storyline 😭 I'm glad it meant so much to you. I personally am a huge fan of Marie Laveau, myself, mainly bc I loved watching Angela working with Jessica Lange; they ate up that dynamic that season. Any fandom that doesn't appreciate Angela Bassett doesn't deserve her, even though I am not in that fandom and I don't think I'd want to be!

In defense of late-canon x files (including the revivals)

I was thinking about this poll after I commented on it, and I kinda want to be brave and say more.

Short answer to the poll's question before I go any further: If you're a new fan and a sensitive sort who thinks you'll struggle with your blorbos Really Going Through It and you really need a happy ending, I suggest you stop at the end of season 8. Do not pass go, do not look at spoilers. Disregard this post entirely, close the internet, and go look at something that makes you happy. (Also fuck every part of society that characterizes sensitivity as inherently weak and bad and some kind of personal failing, you are valid.)

That said, "quality" as a concept is entirely subjective, and the question of whether or not there's a decline in quality for any story is wholly subjective, too. In the case of x files? I'm not convinced there is a decline. I am going to be upfront that I haven't yet watched past season 8, though I am almost completely spoiled on events after that - and the reason I haven't watched yet is not because of how I know events are going to unfold, but simply because I don't want it to end!!! Ohh, the tension between "I CAN'T WAIT!!!" and "Nooo don't be over D:"

When I first came to txf fandom on tumblr and gradually became spoiled about what happens in late canon though, I was often left uncomfortable and tbh kinda queasy about it. As I said in my comment on the poll, the hate for especially the revival and IWTB, or to a lesser extent even seasons 8 & 9, is very well documented. But! There are other takes to be found here on tumblr if you figure out where to look, and my feelings have changed!

The thing is, I have yet to find myself in any fandom where there isn't a vocal subset of fans who dislike the story after a certain point. I am not joking when I say that no one hates the things they love as passionately as sci-fi and fantasy fans. In my experience, it often hinges on the extent to which a viewer has strong notions on where they would like the characters to end up. In particular with series where shipping is a dominant component for the bulk of a fandom, I have almost universally found that there comes some turning point in the story where "let them be happy you cowards" is the dominant view, and things that compromise the attainment of a degree of romantic stability and/or domesticity are, to many fans, annoying at best and despicable at worst. But! As one tagset on the linked poll said:

and I think for any fandom, that last tag especially is so so so important. (I think that's harder for people watching a weekly series live, bc you have so much time to analyze and speculate and dream before the next breadcrumb drops, but I digress.)

So why am I saying this and how do I apply it to x files? Well, I eventually found that there are also a subset of fans who find redeeming things right up to the very end and actually quite like the whole thing! The things that I had seen people rage and ventpost so much about honestly never quite sounded to me as "out of character" or "untrue to the story" etc as those same ventposts made them sound. And I've discovered I'm not the only one who felt that way. Do I love that the spooky squad had to go through all of those things? No, those poor guys D: Life is hard and they have been through so much trauma. But do those events and their choices make sense to me in light of everything that came before? Yes! And I honestly can't wait to see them fight to overcome those things, breaking, healing, always learning, always growing, always getting better.

So if you're wondering "where does it go wrong"... well, I'm a completionist, as many people who've answered that post are, but also my personal opinion is that I don't think it does go wrong. If you're new and interested in exploring why I've gone from "vaguely queasy" to "excited" about the whole thing, or want to maybe balance out the impressions you're getting about the later seasons before deciding whether or not you want to see the whole thing, I'll put a few blog names in the comments.

Final admission: even once I started feeling a little more confident in the possibility that "actually ok maybe I'm not crazy, maybe this all kind of is in character and does make sense", there was one big plot point that I was NOT looking forward to and I thought I would never be comfortable about. In hindsight, I think my discomfort came from the negative responses being SO seemingly universal that I hadn't stopped to let myself truly consider other possible interpretations on that point. (I mean my initial instinct when I first read about it was, why are we mad about this?? CSM is literally the most unreliable narrator in history???? it's obviously fake news?????? this must be either a fever dream someone's having or it's a misdirection ploy against whatever shadowy forces might still be lurking?????????????? but for whatever reason I guess I had halfway written that off.) Happily, just last month there's a new post-s11 novel out, and although reviews for the book as a whole are mixed, it seems to have laid the groundwork for resolving that plot issue in a way I think most fans would be broadly happy with. If you're interested in being spoiled about that and seeing how, I recommend searching #perihelion on @agent-troi who liveblogged reading it with receipts, scroll back chronological-style to the first post on the subject and see how it unfolded. (And never forget that Dana Katherine Scully is the queen of denial as a coping mechanism lol)

Everyone's mileage will vary. Each person can feel however they want! But for anyone new, I wanted you to know that the very many ventposts you might be seeing are not all there is to this show or its fandom. Some of us love it despite - or even because of - all the things that went "wrong". I think we just don't talk about it as much.

Okay buckle in, somehow this post will be weirder than any of my f1 stuff bcs for some reason I'm very intense about historical figures, I think I just have a tendency to treat them like blorbos

Mostly I'm endeared to powerful figures, idk why, it's the way it is. Okay so obviously you already know I like Napoleon(and Wellington to an extent), that really doesn't need to be emphasized anymore

Since being in Austria, I feel super endeared to Maria Theresa. She just seemed like such a boss! I think she's just really cool. Her father changed the plan of succession so she'd become Empress(rather than her cousins), but immediately upon taking power, she was immediately embroiled in war over her being the new ruler(everyone who had signed the treaty of succession suddeny reversed) But she defended her rule of the Habsburg monarchy! I think the coolest part about her is that her husband, who married into the Habsburgs, was supposed to be in charge, but she wouldn't let him be involved at all practically and was the de facto ruler of the Holy Roman Empire for like 20 years. She had 16 children and was basically constantly pregnant and having kids while involved in war, yet still held power and guided Austro-Hungary through it all 🥹 I think it's very funny also that she was laying out so many reforms, guiding the country basically just herself, and still found time to write letters to all their kids and be an overbearing mother. Also she was Marie Antoinette's mother?? I'm still shocked by how many important kids she had. If you've been to any part of the former Austro-Hungarian(+ Bohemian) Empire, she really left her mark, there's soooo much stuff named after her. The statue of her in between the Kunsthistorisches and the Natural History Museum in Vienna is really cool, and that she has a whole Platz named after her with her giant statue!!! I think it's just really admirable that a woman at that period of time had so much power and ruled so efficiently. (MY god sorry I wrote so much)

Okay now I'll try to refrain from the historical rambles, I also like: Julius Caeser(cliche sorry I know), Dmitri Shostakovich(my favorite composer ever), Pyotr Tchaikovsky(pls read about his sugar mommy patron), Erwin Rommel(I like his nickname: The Desert Fox), J.C. Leyendecker(favorite artist, I am obsessed with his work), Alphonse Mucha, Calvin Coolidge(not the best president by far but the anecdotes about his social awkwardness and quietness are hilarious to me), Ernst Gideon von Laudon(not completely insane about him, but it's like with the Napoleon Crossing the Alps painting, I saw a painting and bust of him and now feel weirdly endeared.) And then there's probably some others I can't recall atm because it's 3 am

I think my top three though are Napoleon, Julius Caesar and Maria Theresa. They're all just very: "Catie saw a painting/statue and is now very weird about it." And then being in the vicinity of so much history made it 1000x worse. Things I saw in Vienna that made me go "oh my god it's blorbo from my history book": Napoleon Crossing The Alps painting(I seriously sat in that room for probably 20 mins just staring at it, I didn't want to leave) + some other various Napoleon artifacts in the Heeresgesichtliche, a very nice bust of Julius Caesar, and literally the entirety of Vienna had Maria Theresa everywhere

I’d tried to pour baking soda on it, but the whole box had collapsed and it got everywhere. We were both sitting right there scrubbing with literal toothbrushes, and I think I was worried you’d be upset with me but you were just laughing.” His heart warms at the pseudo-memory, the hazy feeling of contentment that had permeated the dream. The sound of your laugh, exactly as sweet as in real life. “Your hands were totally covered in baking soda, and the rug was ruined, but we were both laughing our heads off.” 

You’re smiling again, a small, knowing thing. “Had you said something to make us laugh?” 

“No,” he says honestly, “I think it was you.” 

James is aware that he’s barely functioning. It’s almost too much to talk and cut his pancakes at the same time while you’re looking at him like that, like he’s the loveliest thing you’ve ever seen. It makes it both a relief and a disappointment when you drop your gaze. 

“Do you think the stain might’ve been a premonition?” you ask. 

He raises his eyebrows. “How do you mean?” 

You laugh, and he’s instantly spellbound, caught somewhere between fantasy and reality. It takes him a second to realize you’re touching the edge of his plate, tipping it up. James looks down. It had been nearly falling off his lap, his pancakes cut up into tiny pieces and syrup pooled near the rim. 

You look up at him, seraphim with the morning light brightening your features and the hint of a smile playing on your lips. He thinks of how soft they’d felt on his the night before, the way they’d fallen open like welcoming him home. 

“You were almost spilling syrup onto the rug,” you say, that rare and beloved teasing lilt to your voice. “It would’ve taken more than baking soda to get that out.”

You look surprised, then self-conscious, though not nearly as bad as when you’d come into the kitchen a few minutes ago. He covers your hand with his to keep you from going anywhere. Sets his plate on the coffee table. 

“Can I kiss you?” 

Your eyes are wide. “Again?” 

“Yes, again,” James laughs. “And again after that, preferably. Only if it’s okay with you.” 

You shake your head, looking something akin to bewildered. “Yeah. Yeah, please.” 

He starts to lean toward you, and you meet him halfway. Already, it’s a bit different. There’s no tentative stillness, no slow yielding. Your lips are pliant and eager, parting and closing around his like you’re trying to get as much of him as you can. Your fingers wind in his hair without instruction, and James responds by placing his hand in that spot you’d seemed to like it so well last night, the material of your sweatshirt soft beneath his touch. You taste like his pancakes, the syrup sweet on your tongue.
