i got tagged in this, presumably because the person wanted me to debunk it so here we go. (warning long post mostly because of the pictures, putting a break so as to not clog up y’all’s dashes)

the ic’s help for nesta was giving her an ultimatum of going to the house of wind or deportation to the human lands.

mind you, the former is also an isolation with a man she has verbally and physically made clear she wants away from her

“it’s not up for negotiation” again, the ruling power is forcing a war refugee to “choose” between being stuck in a house that would be gruesome to escape from, primarily with a man she wants to be away from and secondarily with another man who’s just as culpable in her imprisonment, and deportation to lands where they know she will be ostracized, subjected to prejudice, friendless, and practically housebound.

furthermore, amren lied about the rules of the night court when nesta rightfully brought up the fact that they were legally not allowed to do this. for all stans like to claim this was just like judge-appointed rehab, within that same modern context, lying about the law to force someone into “rehab” (mind you, through an intervention that had not a single medical professional involved), IS A CRIME

in contrast, nesta’s help for the women in the library was… pinning up a sign-up sheet.

yes, she intentionally practiced in the library, even after clotho asked her not to because it was distracting the priestesses who watched her

however, that was part of her plan to bring cassian down so the priestess could safely see how he trained her given their past terrible experiences with men.

also, there are seven whole chapters between when she puts the sheet up and when gwyn signs up. seven.

and then an additional five chapters when roslin, ananke, and deirdre show up in chapter 29.

ilana and lorelei join in chapter 38.

also note, nesta was going to give up and take down the sheet after her demonstration with cassian because it was her last resort. she still hadn’t physically bothered any of the priestesses, or initiated any unwanted contact.

additionally, clotho, herself, was happy when gwyn signed up.

so let’s review

the ic: forced nesta out of her safe space and demolished it, gave her a hosbon’s choice of training or deportation, and lied to her about their laws to bypass the illegality of their ultimatum

nesta: pinned up a sign-up sheet (which is by definition is voluntary), never physically bothered any of the priestesses or pestered them into signing up, and found a way to assuage any fears about a man training them without directly putting them in his way.

there is also a difference in time. the ic gave nesta no time to make her “decision.” she was forced into beginning her training the same day she got the ultimatum. in contrast, the time between when nesta put up the sheet, and when all the known valkyries from the library left the library to train is 21 chapters.

overall, i genuinely don’t think that anyone making this argument actually believes it, because it’s such a gross intentional misunderstanding of how the neo-valkyries came together, and stripping gwyn, roslin, deirdre, ananke, ilana, and lorelei of their personal choice to leave the library.

i had a thought of "do people not know what AUs are anymore?" and then i remembered nobody explains fandom stuff to new people anymore so it is entirely plausible people genuinely don't know what AUs are and nobody has explained it to them, so for today's lucky 10,000:

"AU" stands for "Alternate Universe" or "Alternative Universe" (same difference) and is basically any thought scenario for a fandom that isn't canon and can't fit within the canon universe. If it takes place in the canon universe but something is notably different, that is typically what's known as a "Canon divergent AU," because it diverges from canon.

an AU can be absolutely anything. There's a couple of widespread pan-fandom au scenarios that often get thrown around, like coffee shop aus, genderbend aus, hanahaki aus (hanahaki is a whole thing in itself i'd recommend researching on your own), etc. One you might hear sometimes is "crossover AU" which is when you have characters from one fandom interacting with characters from another.

You can have as many aus as you want. They can be whatever you want and you can do whatever you want in them. It's a sandbox for you to play around in and explore how things would be different or how the characters would act in those circumstances or environments. Maybe they have different relationships with each other. Maybe they behave slightly differently. Or you can just say "Okay, [x] is true. How did they get here? How would things have to be different for this to occur?" which can also be fun.

If you are ever confused about why people ship something that seems completely out of the blue or doesn't make sense to you in the canon setting, there's a good chance they like it in an AU setting! Not everything everybody is interacting with is necessarily the canon! Not everybody wants things to exist in canon and just want to explore playing dolls in a different sandbox and that's okay. And their sandbox might look a lot different than yours, and that's also okay. You have the freedom to make your sandbox whatever you please. Do whatever you want forever. Get funky with it. AUs are fun.

the funniest meltdown ive ever had was in college when i got so overstimulated that i could Not speak, including over text. one of my friends was trying to talk me through it but i was solely using emojis because they were easier than trying to come up with words so he started using primarily emojis as well just to make things feel balanced. this was not the Most effective strategy... until. he tried to ask me "you okay?" but the way he chose to do that was by sending "👉🏼👌🏼❓" and i was so shocked by suddenly being asked if i was dtf that i was like WHAT???? WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY TO ME?????????? and thus was verbal again

is that piece of media actually bad, or is it just not following the blueprint you projected onto it? is that work actually not good, or are you just demanding something from it that is absolutely antithetical to its themes, genre, tone, and narrative goal? is that story actually poorly written, or do you just dislike that it is not the specific things you wanted from it that it never set out to be, never was, and never is going to become? is it actually bad, or is it actually well-executed and you just dislike the story it chose to be because it isn't catering to your specific desires and expectations?

everybody’s always on writing prompts like “what if there was a world where everyone had a timer ticking down to their death… but you met someone whose timer said infinity!” or “what if everyone had their cause of death tattooed across their forehead… but you met someone whose forehead said THE CREATURE!” Enough -

enough. stop with the shock value. there is no need to insert THE CREATURE; the benign concept of such a world is horrifying enough. not even in urgency, but just in banal, everyday interaction. imagine you meet someone and their timer says two years. not tomorrow, not urgently soon, but two years. enough to do quite a lot. they could fall in love in that time - could they get engaged? have a baby? you might otherwise get to know them, befriend them, but perhaps you opt not to, make a conscious choice not to invest in your own grief. what balancing act would every individual person have to participate in - I have ten years, is that long enough to be a good mother to children? is that long enough to secure a caretaker for my own mother? my wife will die a few months before me. my newborn’s timer reads nineteen years.

and cause of death. you interview for a job and emblazoned across the healthy, smiling face of the HR lady is MALNUTRITION. your country is prospering, safe, but every person you meet on the street from the babies to the old women read BOMB. BOMB. what kind of havoc would fate wreak on the world? what about the loss of privacy? how would that shape our notions of hope? idk man I think a lot of those ancient poems were right, and the fates are monsters. I’m interested by the framing of these ideas as trite horror tales when the premises themselves are so much more disturbing if simply taken to their logical ends

not to be controversial bc I know this is like…not in line with shifting opinions on fanfic comment culture but if there’s a glaring typo in my work I will NOT be offended by pointing it out. if ao3 fucks up the formatting…I will also not be offended by having this pointed out…

‘looking forward to the next update’ and ‘I hope you update soon!’ are different vibes than a demand, and should be read in good faith because a reader is finding their way to tell you how much they love it. I will not be mad at this.

‘I don’t usually like this ship but this fic made me feel something’ is also incredibly high praise. I’m not going to get mad at this.

even ‘I love this fic but I’m curious about why you made [x] choice’ is just another way a reader is engaging in and putting thought into your work.

I just feel like a lot of authors take any comment that’s not perfectly articulated glowing praise in the exact manner they’re hoping to receive it in bad faith.

fic engagement has been dropping across the board over the last several years, and yes it’s frustrating but it isn’t as though I can’t see how it happens. comment anxiety can be a real thing. the last thing anyone wants to do is offend an author they love, and that means sometimes people default to silence.

idk where I’m going with this I guess aside from saying unless a comment is outright attacking me I’m never going to get mad at it, and I think a lot of authors should feel the same way. ESPECIALLY TYPOS PLZ GOD POINT OUT MY TYPOS.
