When you decide to do the hero's sacrifice (you make yourself a bomb and you march towards your death with dignity and even muster up some sympathy for the big bad), and you're rewarded with the resurrection of your mother...
VS
When you decide NOT to do the hero's sacrifice (you want to get in the box but you are LOVED and you want to STAY so you decide not to send yourself to the bottom of the ocean), and you're punished with the death of your mother... the loss of your son's humanity...

The Medarda arc of s2 struggled to be good, because the plot viciously smothered it. You can argue that Arcane was never about politics but you cannot say the Medardas were never explicitly a family defined by politics. So when the show shifted it's priorities from a drama steeped in political conflict where even though the setting was fantastical the stakes were grounded to a shift where magic is the end all be all threat to humanity, the Medardas are rendered largely irrelevant.
In s2 Mel's agency over her own story is both largely stripped from her and poorly communicated. Arcane has Mel abducted from the plot to be the Black Rose's captive. Even when Mel manages to free herself it's not through the traits the audience understands are her strengths, her cunning and social intelligence, it's through an innate instinct that natural to her and indecipherable to the audience.
Ambessa as a character is more or less a villain of convenience, which would be fine if she wasn't immediately following Silco's act. Once Mel is removed from the story Ambessa is largely disconnected from any emotional tension fuels conflict between the characters and previously drove the plot in s1. She's there to play the worse bad guy for Caitlyn and then give Viktor the man power for the Glorious Evolution.
It's frustrating to see the Medardas used the way they are in s2 because when they're together I can see how it could be good. When they're together Mel forces emotion out of Ambessa. In Act 1, Ambessa proved she could do circles around Piltover's court, which could actually put Mel in a tight spot.
Their final scene on paper sounds like a good idea where the true resolution to Mel and Ambessa's story was that Ambessa saw Mel's own ruthless behavior as she not only betrayed Ambessa to the Black Rose, but used her as BAIT to double cross LeBlanc. Ambessa died proud that her daughter killed her the way she did, and that's so cool and tragic, but the execution was a flop.
One, their final fight is completely unimportant to the actual Glorious Evolution, Mel's grief can't even be a highlight because it's interrupted by Viktor's mind trap. Two, their fight didn't rely on any of Mel's actual strengths, just magic and the poorly explained MacGuffin LeBlanc gave her. How did Mel even know it would do that?
It's like the writers had the bones for a great story for the Medardas, but then they're like the world's worst archeologists and fit those bones together in the worst way possible because they were convinced the bones made a stegasaurus instead of a T-rex or something.
#the black rose also doesn't really do anything except kidnap Mel#they know there's an end of the world level problem but they just sit on it for no real reason#arcane critical#mel medarda#ambessa medarda#s2's priorities are mostly incompatible with the kind of characters the medardas were set up as in s1#and frankly didn't want to engage with what made them special#personally i think it's connected to how the showrunners were suprised at Silco's popularity bcuz the stuff that makes silco interesting#is the same stuff that makes mel and ambessa interesting#which is what makes it worse bcuz the blueprint was there for the medardas to shine in s2#but the plot literally ran away from them so they're both largely devices in other people's stories mel less so#you could edit mel out of the last episode and nothing would change in the end#that's how irrelevant she was to the story#actually you could do that to ambessa too they're just there to pad out the numbers to include noxian soldiers#why did mel need to be stuck in the occulorum for the black rose arc to function#they could have easily had more agents in piltover like they did with amara#and they try to ingratiate themselves with her as ambessa further alienates her o#position of power in piltover and mel doesn’t know who to trust except herself and accepts that her methods were always#as ruthless as her mother's wothout any direct bloodshed#or something like that I'm just spitballing#did anyone else notice mel and ambessa didn’t get a songle song durong the show#no blood sweat and tears doesn’t count bcuz it wasn't in the actual show#compare Ambessa's death to Silco's or even Cassandra's who had more weight and time given to it?#it's just above Heimerdinger's own “death”#that's how relevant the Medardas are to this story they're heimerdinger level

Amara/Mary moodboard
for @sapphicnaturalrights - day 4 - Butch & Femme
Mary asks Claire for help to cut her hair. She's still wearing the special brand of post-death mess, getting longer everyday she doesn't brush it. She keeps her curls on top, but she shaves the back, gets rid of everything over her nape. . Amara's overdressed for such a setting – with a silver necklace and rings, black lipstick and glittery eyeshadow, fancy pantuit leading to her flowerly docs.

Ok no bc to piggyback off that Mary post, this might be something people have been saying for a long time but I do genuinely think that Amara giving Dean “what he needs most” was not his mother but to break the idea he has of what a family is, and that’s part of what makes that arc so fascinating to me
#I’m sick with some type of stomach bug so bear with me#deans always had this very western traditional white picket fence idea of what a family structure is#probably bc that’s how his life started and that’s what he saw other kids have and it’s what John always complained about them NOT having#and he spends his whole life chasing this idea#arguably you could say that Amara too spent her life chasing a family dynamic that simply wasn’t possible for her#and eventually she agrees to make peace with what she has and what IS possible (pre end stuff ofc)#and she clocks Dean RIGHT away lmao#and she sees that what Dean needs isn’t a fantasy about what his life could have been like#he needs to accept what he has now and make the best of it#and also to understand that there’s more to parents than just being parents -a lesson he’s been internalizing for years considering he views#himself as Sam’s parent as well#he’s soooo angry that he was always reduced to Sam’s caretaker by his father#(rightfully so he was a child im not saying that anger isn’t justified)#only to project that anger onto Mary when she’s not just a caring mother but a fully developed person with her own trauma and needs#what Dean needs to learn is that he’ll never have a perfect made for tv family bc that’s not how real families work#and he needs to learn that family is also chosen as much as it is decided for you (ie. Cas and Crowley)#(and if you really wanna get into it that could include Charlie who he thinks of as a sister or Jodie who is his equal but often plays a#(maternal role to them similar to Bobby being a paternal one. or Ellen and Jo even)#do you see what I’m saying here

I love how in s12 Rock Never Dies, Lucifer IS using Cas as a stand-in for Chuck.
Here, Lucifer wants Cas's reaction, his attention. He's throwing his feelings of abandonment onto Cas.
He beats up Crowley, then he kills Tommy, THE ONE WHO HAD RUN TO CAS:
Tumblr media
Then he looks to Cas... to SEE if Cas reacted.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And like, he throws Cas onto a couch. Clearly, Lucifer doesn't want Cas out of commission here.
Tumblr media
He wants Cas to watch him kill the people to get a reaction out of Cas. THAT'S what the "weak/pleasureless/dutybound dullard" line is all about. It's the goading, maestro.
Lucifer finds it difficult to ruffle Cas.
Tumblr media
//
In the shared mindscape in s11, Lucifer isn't torturing Cas per se, something that shocks even Crowley.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(((Aside// One of the things I noticed upon rewatch is that, a few flares of unruliness aside, Cas's predominant feeling for Crowley in season 10 turns out to be... pity.
Surprisingly, Crowley responds to that, as shown here in his complicated mess of behavior as he jumps in to help out… And Crowley is hilariously frustrated with Cas. "Snap out of it!"))))
But back to the Lucifer of it all. Even though Lucifer’s letting Cas be, he immediately moves to brutalize Crowley. "You want to put me back in the cage!" Lucifer screams. He also echoes Chuck: "You plotted to replace me!"
(Chuck will, in fact, say this TO Lucifer later in s11: "I know you plotted to replace me with the angels!")
Tumblr media Tumblr media
///
Later, Lucifer faces off against Amara, the person with the twin fear that he has: being ignored, put into a CAGE.
Tumblr media
But interestingly, she has no sympathy for him. (Hey, hey did betray her. But so did Chuck...)
She spends most of her time torturing Lucifer and brutalizing him beyond comprehension:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
//
In the heat of battle, she rips Lucifer away from Cas and throws him away without a thought.
And even though she spent most of her time in season 11 creating discord and evil on the earth in similar measure to how Lucifer does (toxic fog that turns people berserk, storms, burning religious wellwishers to a crisp), there is peace and forgiveness waiting for her.
No one looks for Lucifer or even considers offering him a path to redemption/forgiveness.
It's no wonder Lucifer focuses his anger on Cas. Cas was the most stable presence he had in eons.

I like the idea of her having glasses, to fit her Oracle knack, but they’re fake, to fit the idea of her sort of being in disguise/hiding :) Giving Nevermoor characters glasses is a great hobby of mine lol

SUMMARY/BACKSTORY
Calliope was born in a suburban house to wonderful parents and older sibling named Bailey. As close as she was with her family, the little girl was closest with Bailey. They truly were the best sibling she could ask for. Always playing with her, listening to her woes no matter how silly they may be, comforting her or cheering her up whenever she needed it. Sure, her parents were also involved, but there's nothing like a sibling connection. Either way, Calliope couldn't be happier to be part of such a family. They didn't have much, but it didn't matter, she still loved them.
One day while she was helping her older sibling gather some fruits from the woods nearby, something happened. As Bailey looked away for a moment, Calliope noticed a glow somewhere in the distance and decided to check it out. The little girl stumbled upon a strange man holding a mirror. The man noticed her before she could say anything and grinned in a sinister manner. Suddenly having a gut feeling that he wasn't nice, she tried to run, but he caught her before she could move. Looking closer, he looked almost desperate. But that didn't make Calliope any less scared. The man then started chanting something she couldn't quite understand as he held the mirror closer to her. The mirror's glow got stronger before it engulfed her and everything went dark.
The little girl woke up in... What was this place? It looked like some kind of void. She also couldn't remember anything, not even her name. Whatever this place was, she didn't like it and wanted to go home, wherever home was. She knew it wasn't here, whatever here was. But she was trapped.
But the void was kind enough to offer her stories she could witness. Stories that made her question people's reasons for the things they did. Some were lighthearted, some not so much, but they always had some kind of lesson. Strangely enough, they brought her a weird sense of comfort.
One day, something happened. She was free. A kind lady by the name of Colette decided to help her. But not without sacrificing something of hers. The lady was also kind enough to give her a name: Amara. She liked it.
As for what happened, the child was trapped in the mirror and that changed her. She couldn't express her emotions anymore. Mirrors were able to show her the truth and by that I mean people's true intentions and what she was feeling. However, the reflection showed how she used to look. Not only to herself, but others as well.
Amara sensed something was wrong and went somewhere in the woods. There she found a person dying. She recognized them as her older sibling, Bailey, the only thing she remembered. She said their name as she saw the light leave their eyes. But she wasn't ready to let go, not when the siblings were finally supposed to reunite. And it seemed like Bailey wasn't either as their soul came back. The two then went to Night Raven College and met a lot of interesting people there. Amara couldn't show it, but she was happy.
