Dangers of the Abyss
Tumblr media
Intro = Does this image stir something in you? Some emotion, thought, memory? Perhaps fear. What we cannot express in words, we express in symbols and images. Images are not mere pixels but they are emotionally charged and they exist in our minds too. After all, our eyes are like cameras, mind is like camera film, memory is like storage space. The unconscious world can be accessed via your mental images, fantasies, visions, dreams, thoughts, emotions, memory. Some of the tools we use to explore the unconscious are writing, art, active imagination, tarot cards and alchemy. Some of the ways we know unconscious exists is synchronicities, projection and spiritual awakenings.
World of the unconscious = Few things are as tempting as exploring the 4th, 8th and 12th houses in astrology. Especially when you find yourself at the outskirts of healing, you are sucked into these areas of life and may lose touch with the material world. When the native is so engrossed in spiritual work or shadow work that they are obsessed with it and do it compulsively everyday, that is when you know that they have crossed the limits of what is healthy for them. Astrology, spirituality, occult, esoteric and mysticism (for eastern audience), new age tools (for western audience) can be very tempting in times of turbulence. This is why when life is out of control (eg, divorce or break up, disease or accident, money or career problems) we run to astrologers/psychics/healers, even if we were atheist or anti-theist otherwise. What is unseen, intangible and unknown resides in the unconscious and these 3 houses in astrology are the mining holes for the unconscious. They represent the collective unconscious, personal unconscious (or the subconcious mind) and bringing them to the light of the day is called awareness/enlightenment.
Tumblr media
3. Curious case of Friedrich Nietzsche = Though history does not report why Nietzsche went insane, many report (including Carl Jung) that Nietzsche went so far into self exploration that he could not come back to the material life. That he went so deep into the unconscious that he could not pull himself out of it and completely submerged with the unconscious. Do you see how dangerous it is to do shadow work? Though whether Nietzsche could be reborn or not is not something we can decide, for it was his life path and his destiny. Though he lost himself in the darkness, at least he wrote some great books, at least he excavated some pearls from the ocean for the rest of us. It is to be noted that Nietzsche had ketu/south node in the 7th house which can signify his unsuccessful love life, solitude/loneliness and also had sun in the 12th house.
"...Nietzsche would be just about as grateful to his rescuers as somebody who has jumped into the water to drown himself and has been pulled out by some fool of a coastguard. I have seen Nietzsche in states in which he seemed – horrible to say – as though he were only pretending to be mad, as though he were glad to have ended this way!” Peter Gast, The Madness of Nietzsche by Erich Podach
4. We the regulars = But we the regular, the common, the laymen people who cannot afford to be lost in the unconscious world, who have school/college/job, family/relations/marriage, money/food/shelter to take care - we need a foundation to navigate the material life alongside the spiritual life. Unless you are an ascetic sitting in a cave, browsing tumblr in your lunch break before the 10 hour meditation session, we know that you have a full life with many dimensions to take care of. And it is for those of us to learn to balance the material and spiritual life
5. Doing it alone = Whether a therapist or a family member or a friend or a loved one, anyone who can keep you grounded in the real world, bring you back to the daily life, keep you rational when you are losing touch with reality and guide you when you are losing track can be helpful. Though shadow work is a solitary process, we still need somebody else to give us objective judgment, tell whether we are biased in our judgment and guide us with their own wisdom and experience. This is why 4th/8th houses also deal with generations, ancestors, inheritance, history because it is only by standing upon the shoulder of the giants that you can make progress in your life. We may think we know it all intuitively/alone, but the more we learn the more we discover how little we know. "Learn from the mistakes of others, you can't live long enough to make them all yourself." - Chanakya, Indian polymath
6. Psychic content is reality = I am very fond of this interview of Carl Jung. What Jung meant to say here is that the events of psyche are as real as the material life. For instance, if you celebrate your birthday on a certain date with your friends, you call it reality. But if you think about celebrating your birthday with your friends, you call it daydream and not reality. This is where Jung says that even the world in your mind is as real and valid as the world outside. So whether you celebrate your birthday in physical world or mental world, both are equally valid and real. So, when the mental world is as encompassing, satisfying and real as the physical world, it is very easy and tempting to spend your whole life in the mind. In the modern world, the addiction to social media, internet, video games and T.V. is similar to living in your mind (unless you are using technology to do your job and make money).
youtube
7. Being clueless and inexperienced = The baby witches often ask minute questions on spells, tools and energy. Do you work in coven or are you a solitary witch? Are you a family astrologer or the first in your family? Do you visit a psychologist or do your own therapy in your journal? If the answer to all these questions is the latter of the two, then you may have begun from a place where you were clueless, inexperienced and confused. Perhaps you learned from trial and error, perhaps you did hours of research, perhaps you felt like you were not meant for it, but what we do know is that being clueless and inexperienced in the world of the unconscious can have serious drawbacks and dangers. The most dangerous is the mental and emotional impact of practices that do not make your life better rather pull you in a rut.
8. Solutions = Solutions are very simple, so simple that we may dismiss it, but learning to keep a balance between material life (school/college/self care/job/ family/responsibilities) and the spiritual life (shadow work/alchemy/exploring the unconscious/self actualization) is crucial. Next solution is to be able to identify the psychic contents with mindfulness and living in the present moment - this comes with practice, perhaps months or years of practice before one can calm down the restlessness to stay mindful. Next solution is to really understand your mental process. Mind is a beautiful thing, do not deal with it lightly. Just like you would arrange, clean, organize, beautify your physical space, you also have to arrange, organize and keep your mental space neat and clean. Next solution is to what I mentioned earlier in a post to keep marking mistakes and correct decisions for yourself, to use reasoning, logic, common sense, decision making, routine (rather than be emotional thinker, magical thinker, impulsive and reckless). In short, think BEFORE you act and not the vice versa. The exploration of the unconscious is systematic and organized, it is not careless and impulsive.
9. Conclusion = So, if you are a first generation astrologer or witch or healer or trauma cycle breaker, be very vigilant of your limits and structure. I have written about psychosis before which can induce when the native is not mentally prepared for the psychological adventure of healing and actualization. Psychoanalysis, spiritual practices and occult practices are parallels to each other and if you feel like you are called into any of these interests, please make sure you have your physical life in order, lest you want to reach rock bottom again and again. I am speaking from experience that being first time clueless healer, psychoanalysis made my life even more complicated instead of magically improving it. I thought I had hit rock bottom in physical life but I did not know yet that even rock bottom has a basement that I hit with clueless psychoanalysis and spiritual practices. It was like this diagram for me:
Tumblr media
It felt like I was making great progress with shadow work and psychoanalysis, it felt like I hit the jackpot and all my problems would be explained/solved but it took me a lot of time to realize that it takes immense responsibility to tackle the world of the unconscious and it is not mere for fun and games, rather it can really disturb your life and make you dysfunctional in the material world.

FOR THOSE WHO’RE STRUGGLING WITH INTRUSIVE THOUGHTS
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Indifference
I was asked, how do I show indifference instead of giving my negative thoughts denial? Indifference is shown by practicing restricting the urge to react. Even claiming, "No I am not," or "No" to a thought you dislike is not "bad" or "wrong" but it still is giving it attention. And again, attention here meaning reaction. Suppose today you had a thought that you were stupid or something negative toward yourself. You accidentally react and feel a surge of emotions come. By in large, these emotions are intense and familiar. Since they are familiar, the lure to believe them is greater. So to not be lured into that dark abyss of harmful thoughts, you fight against it and say "No, I will not go there." You feel good about yourself that you stood up this harmful thought. You feel you defeated it. But then tomorrow comes, and that thought you just defeated may have only lost but it has not given up. It comes back again and then you say "Well, last time I said "No, I will not go there," and it worked, so I will do it again. Then you win, feel good about yourself, then tomorrow comes...This dilemma seems never ending. Other tactics are used yet, you find yourself back at square one every time. What happens next is that this patterned is noticed and over time you start to feel that you are stuck. After many tactics, how could not be any bit further? Maybe you are stuck? But what must be realized is that you are the creating the thought. That thought is coming from a State! And a State is FEELING we have towards ourself. So with this understanding, we must see that we should not be fighting thoughts but changing our State, our feeling toward ourself. Instead of reacting when that thought comes, do not speak. Just stop the reaction. Don't waste a breath on it. I don't care what it is, or if it is even true at a time. If it does not conform to who you want to be, your new State (feeling toward self) don't react to it. Even if you do react, take it back. Slowly stop yourself, but and move on to what you want. Do not look back wondering if you won, or if it will come back. That is to give it attention again. Your attention is precious, life-giving water and it needs to be given the plants, States that aid your life. Move on. You may want to look back, you may feel afraid to move on, but do it. Move on to the next thought and give that your full attention. It feels incredible knowing it is your attention that keeps things alive in your mind and you have to power to remove the attention/reaciton. When a thought comes, and it feels as though it slapped you in the face with emotions, turn the other cheek. Don’t cave into it, because you don’t have to. This is the art of forgiveness. I do not care if at one point you were insecure in yourself and you made mistakes, if this does not conform to your new State, then do not react to it. If you must, observe it, and practice not reacting. Practice not speaking to it. The move on and feel deserving to move on. You will feel a freedom in you when you realize you do not have to react. You will feel in control of yourself. You will feel there is no "other" in your mind ruining things. You will feel a harmony within. Then you will see, it was you all along. It was you putting that freighting thought in your mind. It was you who was holding a bad/fearful feeling toward yourself. This was the cause. So change the feeling about Inner Self, and you will find it far far easier to not react to thoughts that no longer aid. It is ok to let them go. Feel deserving of a good life. Feel you deserving of a loving relationships. Feel good about your contributions to life. Feel tall, powerful. Feel yourself to be loving. Why not? If a thought comes to stop you from feeling those wonderful feeling, then practice indifference! Forgive yourself by letting go of all the hindrances! —
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You cannot commit to a State unless there is love. So make yourself so lovely that you cannot help but fall in love with yourself. And this State is not something you "will be" but something you are now. Realize you ALREADY are that State. Feel this as a present fact. Life is reflecting "I AM," not "I Will Be." And these are feelings, and "I AM" is a present fact feeling. There is no one to change but Self and Self is collection of States. So feel no shame changing. There is nothing else to do since life is reflecting Self.
CREATOR OF THOUGHT
1. Afraid of Thoughts
What I realized through hours and hours of meditation was that I was actually afraid of having a fearful thought. I was feeling afraid of having my wonderful thought ruined while I imagined a lovely scene. This means my true fear was actually the THOUGHT ITSELF. IT IS A FEELING PROBLEM! The thoughts in themselves do not matter, it is the feeling of fearing of them that is the problem.
2. I Am The Creator
Once I saw that I was afraid of the thoughts themselves, I took responsibility for creating them. There is nobody else within me who is thinking. I am the dreamer and what I dream within is my responsibility. I cannot feel it is something outside of me giving me these thoughts. I cannot believe in second causes. I sow and I reap. So I assumed the position of the Creator of ruining my own wonderful thoughts. I realized it was me who was sabotaging, me who was creating myself unsafe. This was wonderful news because if it is me who is doing it then I am allowed to stop it. So I practice seeing myself doing all the wonderful things I wanted and the moment that feeling of fear, that feeling of "Oh no, I hope nothing ruins it," in that instant I would realize I am the only one who can ruin it. So I naturally stopped myself from ruining and it felt incredible. Then I deeply deeply felt that I do not need to fear anyone in this world. The fear of others is just an assumption! I boldly assumed I was unafraid of everyone. That I could not be embarrassed nor ashamed. Since I realized that I am the one doing it, then I can grant myself anything! So I felt as deep as I can entire safety. I felt so safe to express myself how I wish. I felt nothing could ruin anything in my mind for it is just me! It is my own personal reality!
3. Life Reflects Me
I then realized that I cannot reap what I do not sow! Meaning if you are imagining safety, love and peace, you will not reap unsafely, hatred and chaos. GOD IS NOT MOCKED. "So, my tomorrow will be determined by the thought that I sow today. “Be not deceived; God is not mocked, whatever a man sows, that—-not something else—-that shall he also reap.” - Neville, The Sower 1965 If you feel after safety, excellence, brilliance you cannot reap anything else! The Mirror of Life cannot mock you! So do not fear that you will become something you do not wish. You cant! You can only be what you feel yourself to be!
4. Change My Feeling
If you have read my series then you know that you are given the permission to feel after what you want. You are allowed to feel yourself to be incredible, unafraid. The past does not control you, nor the fears of the future. These are all assumptions! The past does not have to effect at all! You can assume right now by feeling the absolute relief that the past has no power over you. The Imagination holds nothing back. It is not ashamed of you! The name "I AM" does not resist you because you did something in your past or of something that happened to you. You are not stuck by any means. God is not ashamed and will respond to anyone who takes the present position of I AM. Truly nothing holds you back in your Mind because EVERYTHING is yours in your Mind and your Mind contains every assumption you can conceive. When you realize these truths, you will have a peace in your body you didn't know you could have. You will meditate a heaven within and nothing can ruin it but yourself! Don't spoil it because it does not have to be spoiled! I did not want to make this a long and elaborate writing. I wanted it to be simple to understand and and give you the understanding that it is only you within. You do not have to worry about the thoughts of another. The only thing that can ruin anything is your own Imagination! You are FREE to assume what you like in The World of Imagination! Fear no man, fear no imaginal act. Imagine what pleases your soul, its free. The only price is your current limited conception!
Read this from Neville:
"So tonight, let me quote it in a simple, simple way. You sit quietly and now forget what you even did one second before. You may be ashamed of what you did; God isn’t. You’ve been made to feel that you did wrong, or maybe you did wrong in your own mind’s eye. But don’t think for one moment because you did something that you thought wrong or society may judge you harshly for, that you are not now worthy to call on his name if you know his name; his name is I AM. The night before you could have been plastered, the night before you could have done a thousand things of which you may be ashamed. It doesn’t stop you from getting the response from God if you call on his name. So you sit quietly, close your eyes (just to aid your attention), and then construct a simple—the simpler the better—the simplest little scene which implies the fulfillment of the dream. The holding of a piece of paper in your hand from a certain character, and that’s what you want, and it reads as you want it, well, that’s it. You want to take the hand of a friend, congratulate the friend on his good fortune, that’s it. You want to see the ring on a finger of some friend who is anxious to be happily married in this world, that’s it. Whatever is the end implying the fulfillment of the dream. And all you do, you do it naturally and simply; as you do it naturally, give it tones of reality, sensory vividness; and then open your eyes. Then hold God trustworthy!" - Neville
“Don’t try to analyze yourself, saying “What the devil have I done that was wrong?” because the minute you start that, you start blaming yourself. Because who in this world can honestly look himself in the face and not find unnumbered things that are unlovely! They may not have been externalized as yet, but they were thought. So no one can tell me he is without sin. All men have sinned. Not a man in this world can tell me he has not coveted; he has not in some way stolen if it’s only mentally. You can steal a man’s good name by describing him to another in unflattering terms, and therefore you take from him his good name. So you can steal, you can do all kinds of things in the psychological manner. So no man is without guilt, but no one! So don’t analyze yourself, because you’re going to find yourself guilty and then you cannot get off base. So forget what you have done. What you’ve done will come up and you will reap it, the whole thing will come, all things are coming, the tares and the wheat together. But start planting afresh. Start with something lovely, something wonderful, not only for self but for the extended self, the seeming other, who is really not another, it’s yourself pushed out. Simply see them as you would like to see them…fall in love with them. Fall in love with them not to possess them but to see that they’re happy and, well, secure in this world.” - Neville
Tumblr media
”Don’t be anxious about tomorrow, for what you feel after now is your tomorrow." - Edward Art
And then I read a lecture from Neville this month and he says the same exact thing just differently,
"So, my tomorrow will be determined by the thought that I sow today." - Neville
What I am realizing is that the more and more you meditate on this Law, you will naturally come to the same conclusions that those greats in the past have come to. We are One.

Well shit your Fallen Angel Gabe art has me Intrigued. Damn. Also what's up with the golden cracks on his chest? Is that where the light was ripped from him, or something more ominous? :O
FALLEN GABRIEL MY BELOVED....here's some definitive thoughts on him that i largely came up with while designing him (it's long it's long im,,,,so sorry)!!
originally with that last piece, i just wanted to design a winter-themed take on gabriel's outfit but it quickly turned into developing on his new life as a fallen angel and how he might appear. gabriel's major sin, as it might be conceptualized in dante's divine comedy, would be treachery itself - the lowest layer of hell is judecca, representative of those who betray their lords and benefactors. however, i view him as a fallen angel rather than a complete demon, and so he is still granted a small amount of grace even after his sin. this is shown in the warmth his new clothing provides, insulating him from the dire freeze of treachery where he would be condemned and where he may wander the wastes freely unlike the sinners trapped there in ice. like i mentioned in a previous ask, gabriel sees the additions as a mockery of his old form however, the fur-lined armor and cape normally evoking images of the noble, but here they are entirely functional, animal-like and stripped of their more elegant connotations. his clothes also continue to be adorned with crosses, likely as a symbol of attempted forced repentance and what he has lost rather than a banner he carries.
physically, he has changed as well - the massive scarring on his chest is representative of his secondary sin, lust. again in the divine comedy, lust is viewed as wrongful love, love that is somehow detrimental but is consensual (if i recall correctly,,,,it's been a couple years since i read the comedy lol). gabriel's motivations and his actions are reduced here, his epiphany and his reasons for carrying out his treachery are complex, but he is struck in the chest and partially shattered with his betrayal blamed solely on his lust for v1. i kind of thought about it in terms of a REAL early gabe piece i did, that he had nails driven into his heart, but also with the idea of his body sort of "burning out" to resemble the embers of consumed wood. ALL this to say that his skin is brittle here, broken apart and easily damaged, so that he may feel sharp, nail-like pain in his heart whenever he's struck in the chest (the irony of his crimes against the people of lust and this punishment are not lost on him either).
i've talked about his wings a couple times too, BUT i've got a few more points on them - to reiterate what i said in the tags, his wings and halo are now a stark white that reflects no emotion (although....if i can be sappy for a sec...i think very pale flickers of his ecstasy colors can eventually light through them....OK!!!) while the verses that once lined them have turned to a blank black. i thought a lot about the colors tbh, but landed on black and white for both how sterile they feel and how pure white reflects the landscape of treachery while black represents the total absence of god's light in that circle (appropriate for literally blacking out gabriel's old verses). the crown of his halo is now heavy on his head and his wings are unbearable, so he often puts both of them away as it dulls the pain they cause. he can't indefinitely keep them in, so he allows them out when he can rest and where they might not be disturbed. he hates to feel them though, hates to see them for some time, how soulless they both are and, in the case of wings, how quickly they grow tattered when they're uncared for.
finally, he has lost his name - "gabriel" can no longer exist, not being a separate entity from god. however, he is not a demon either and so has no infernal name, instead left without his identity. it reflects the void now in himself, the hollow body as an abyss emptied of what has sustained him his entire existence. in so many ways, he feels now much more like the husks of hell, reborn into a body to reflect his sin. IF i can go on a bit of a tangent, i really like the idea of his resurrection taking place in the tomb of saint gabriel, where v1 has to fight him one last time...he can no longer fly or teleport, instead just incredibly brutal and absolutely not letting v1 get any air time bc it pisses him off lol the fight is largely to calm him down and he leaves with v1 after recollecting himself, but he very pointedly refuses to discuss anything about the tomb itself. he does tell v1 quite quickly that he's no longer gabriel, that he can have no ties to that identity, but it's hardly fazed by the news - from the beginning v1's thought that name messed a lot with his head and so has been calling him "gabe" or "gabi" basically since the moment they stopped being strictly enemies. like. it could recognize how important it was to him to be gabriel, but it wanted him to be himself too, so this was its compromise. gabriel was never super keen on it, but after his fall he's extraordinarily grateful he wasn't simply "gabriel" until the bitter end. it sort gives him an anchor identity while he figures out the rest...and begins to sort through the millennia of his previous existence

10 books to know me 📚
thank you for the tag @anouri !!! <3
ten books to know me or know what i like to read about?? hmm. i'll tag the books and some quotes to convince you to read them.
The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt ~ the only book ever. jk. but it is my favorite. i read it 1-3x a year. would take it w me on a deserted island. all that.
"A great sorrow, and one that I am only beginning to understand: we don’t get to choose our own hearts. We can’t make ourselves want what’s good for us or what’s good for other people. We don’t get to choose the people we are."
"And in the midst of our dying, as we rise from the organic and sink back ignominiously into the organic, it is a glory and a privilege to love what Death doesn’t touch."
"As long as I am acting out of love, I feel I am doing best I know how."
Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë ~ moody and damp in a way that seeps into your bones and refuses to leave.
“You said I killed you-haunt me, then! [...] Be with me always-take any form-drive me mad! only do not leave me in this abyss, where I cannot find you!”
“If all else perished, and he remained, I should still continue to be; and if all else remained, and he were annihilated, the universe would turn to a mighty stranger.”
What My Mother and I Don't Talk About by Michele Filgate ~ collection of essays about people's relationships with their mothers.
“The hunger I feel is so unreasonable I can’t parse it, even to myself. But I want to be the daughter of this mother, the one who lives in a pink building, the one who dances.”
“I love you past the sun and the moon and the stars,” she’d always say to me when I was little. But I just want her to love me here. Now. On Earth.”
A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket ~ yes, the whole series. read them as a kid and they're why i am the way that i am.
"I will love you as a thief loves a gallery...as misfortune loves orphans, as fire loves innocence and as justice loves to sit and watch while everything goes wrong."
"To Beatrice— Darling, dearest, dead."
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott ~ comfort read! it's coziness and comfort in book form! jo march n me are the same and we're besties.
"I keep turning over new leaves, and spoiling them, as I used to spoil my copybooks; and I make so many beginnings there never will be an end."
“The humblest tasks get beautified if loving hands do them.”
The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros ~ read this as a young teenager and it's stuck with me ever since.
"And the story goes she never forgave him. She looked out the window her whole life, the way so many women sit their sadness on an elbow. I wonder if she made the best with what she got or was she sorry because she couldn't be all the things she wanted to be. Esperanza. I have inherited her name, but I don't want to inherit her place by the window."
"Their strength is secret. They send ferocious roots beneath the ground. They grow up and they grow down and grab the earth between their hairy toes and bite the sky with violent teeth and never quit their anger. This is how they keep."
Play it As it Lays by Joan Didion ~ it's just a book for your early 20s i think.
“There was a silence. Something real was happening: this was, as it were, her life. If she could keep that in mind she would be able to play it through, do the right thing, whatever that meant.”
Ways of Seeing by John Berger ~ all about art and capitalism and observation. 13/10 read.
“The mirror was often used as a symbol of the vanity of woman. The moralizing, however, was mostly hypocritical. You painted a naked woman because you enjoyed looking at her, you put a mirror in her hand and you called the painting "Vanity", thus morally condemning the woman whose nakedness you had depicted for your own pleasure.”
“The bogus religiosity which now surrounds original works of art, and which is ultimately dependent upon their market value, has become the substitute for what paintings lost when the camera made them reproducible.”
As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner ~ haunting, southern gothic, stream-of-consciousness style that embedded itself into my 17 yr old brain and never left
“Memory believes before knowing remembers.”
“That’s what they mean by the womb of time: the agony and the despair of spreading bones, the hard girdle in which lie the outraged entrails of events.”
Turtles All The Way Down by John Green ~ i'd be doing teenage nat a disservice if at least one john green novel didn't make the list
“I was so good at being a kid, and so terrible at being whatever I was now.”
“You can’t control it, that’s the thing,” I said. “Life is not something you wield, you know?”
tagging some of youse bc i wanna see what you're reading! 😋 (absolutely no pressure!!) : @twisted-tales-told @rollercoasterwords @euphorial-docx @rays-of-raven @anythingforourmoonysstuff + anyone else who wants to play!! say i tagged you !! <333

I dunno if my ask went though, tumblr said no links are allowed in the ask. If it didn’t just lmk plz cuz im just sobbing/j
But I’ll rewrite here so if it did you can ignore this haha.
Anyways you fave anon is back, me 🌽 anon /j. So I loved what you did with my ask before and gotta say didn’t expect art but it was also amazing I ate that up. Anygays, I was recently scrolling in your page since I haven’t been here for a lil while and my eyes caught your post with Alister(?) with Abyss with the whole theatrical bit. And that obviously had me hooked since I’m also a lil hyper fixed on hazbin myself but not fully…yet.
So I decided to come back with this one simple ask:
What kind of demon is Abyss and power or abilities do they posses? Also also what are their relations with the hazbin crew, like what are their usual interactions with one another?
Now one may say that one is simply curious….which is half true. One could say that I could be getting more info to cook up something that one might enjoy.
That’s all form me, until we meet again! /ref
Ps: love your art!! I always eat it up and it is simply divine!!! Have a lovely day and always be gay /j
- 🌽 anon
Unfortunately, your original ask never went through, but I'm very glad you doubled down on it. It's one of the reasons why I try to make posts encouraging asks sometimes, in case someone either forgot or realizes that it probably might not have gone through
Now, onto the ask. Lemme just start with: AAAAAAAAAHHHH! I fucking love Hazbin so much! I've loved it since the pilot, it's just one of those things I've silently enjoyed for years, I couldn't help but make an OC! Also, sorry for the rambling in advance, this is going to be long. Like, LONG long, so buckle up buddy bois. Also, also, very brief mentions of suicide, rapists, and murderers, but it’s a Hazbin post, sooooo
Of course, the initial was a more feline demon, as you can see, but then I was talking with an old RP buddy that suggested deer since I wasn't quite sure about their original design. Deer had been on my radar, but I tried the cat first. I love both, but the deer based one is definitely the one I prefer. I actually based the coloration and bioluminescence on this reply from @roseytoesy that I forgot to add in my original post of Abyss (Sorry Rosey!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Abyss has two primary ‘abilities’. Abilities in quotations because one is passive: they have a venomous bite and venomous spines. They're laced with a venom so potent that they easily killed their first demon on accident when they were attacked and their assailant stabbed themself with a spine. Since joining Hell, they've also found out that their venom can be a very potent drug if processed/diluted a certain way, so their main source of income is selling their venom concentrate. Their spines, however, will lose both potency and bioluminescence within three days. They'll use these shed spines to hang stuff up in their room sometimes though
Tumblr media
Their second ability is the only reason they weren't exterminated during the angels coming down, and it's the fact that they can shrink. It's mostly involuntary and just sort of a panic button to slip away. They've gotten better at controlling it so that they're not just shrinking everytime they get spooked, but it still happens occasionally. They’ll also use it to shrink slightly to help shrug off people touching them. I’m not sure whether or not to add more abilities, but there's the two for now
As for day to day interactions, I also have to think about how they'd be introduced and general personality
Of course, Abyss is another self-insert, so mostly what my other characters do, they do as well. They’ve got a rather dry sense of humor and sarcasm, though they’re not very good at reading other people’s sarcasm and will tend to take things at face value. They’re a pretty recent fall compared to the others, less than five years in Hell, so they’re more skittish and anxious than cold-hearted or confident in their abilities. They are, however, one to make fast friends given the opportunity and compatibility. They love games, but find Charlie's overly childish games a bit nauseating
They're very… skittish/antsy/defensive when first being introduced to new situations and hate leaving whatever small comfort zone they can make in Hell. So I more or less picture them sneaking around to scout out the place and the inhabitants before they decide whether or not they want to actually be a part of the whole operation. I think they'd last maybe two days before being outed by Alastor
I'm imagining since Alastor just doesn't show up in some episodes that it's not uncommon for him to be missing from the hotel occasionally during the day. But, when he comes downstairs the next day Charlie is like, “Now that everyone's here!” and Alastor just goes “I think you're missing someone”, just YOINKING them from nowhere and plopping them in front of everyone. He probably knew they were in the hotel the entire time but thought it’d be funny to give them a false sense of security before just procuring them from wherever they were hiding
Aside from the obvious surprise at the sudden deer demon, initial impressions would range from skepticism with maybe even the thought of them being a new attempt for the Vees to get information about the hotel. But, thanks to Charlie wanting to see the best in everyone and them barely knowing about the Vees (Only Vox because of the TVs everywhere), everyone would cool off mostly pretty quickly. And, here’s what I think everyone’s relationship would be with them in no particular order
Charlie, of course, would love that there was another demon interested in the hotel, even if she’s a bit appalled and stumped at what she’s working with when she finds out that they committed suicide and mostly didn’t do much wrong in their life (I'm going with the thing I grew up with where Catholic people would tell me that if someone committed suicide they'd instantly go to Hell). Most of their sins would occur after reaching Hell, such as drug use and killing (even if most times is in self-defense). Abyss would have an amicable relationship with Charlie, being suspicious of the good-nature at first. But, once they’re comfortable with Charlie, they have no problems just hanging out and shooting the shit with her. Even though they will find her optimism sometimes a bit overbearing, they’d try to be polite about it (in their own way)
Vaggie would be suspicious of them at first like with Sir Pentious, but would overall not really mind them. Probably wouldn’t like their attitude a bit because if she says “I’ve got my eye on you” or something, they’ll almost definitely reply back with “Well, you’ve only got the one”. I think they would eventually get along with each other. Maybe not super buddy-buddy, but friendly enough. Abyss definitely thinks Vaggie is a bit too suffocating with Charlie sometimes, but it’s between the two girls not them, so as long as Charlie doesn’t mind
Angel Dust is one where I’m not quite sure where their relationship would stand, either at first or over time. He’d probably make a raunchy joke or something to test the waters to see if he can piss them off to get a reaction. I can’t imagine him trying to make a pass at them because they sound more feminine, but if he did they’d probably be caught off guard and either reply bluntly in confusion or give a playful comeback thinking it was a bit. I can imagine them being drinking buddies with both of them at the bar. I feel like he’s the type to maybe find random ramblings amusing? Which is good if he’s drinking with them
Husk is another one I’m not entirely sure about. I feel like it’s a very hit or miss with him. Currently my buddies and I have said that he's the most like one of my friends, so I feel like Abyss and him would get along fairly well. Even if they don't particularly like each other the most, it'd probably be pretty amicable. Also, Abyss would definitely try to be nice because they're still new-ish and also can't imagine that being a bartender in Hell is better than in the human world. Fucker is used affectionately
Nifty would probably be a bit curious and vice versa, but I think both of them would mind their own business overall. I think she’d be a bit appalled by the disarray in Abyss’s room if she ever goes in because they’re a cluttered mess. Not dirty necessarily, but very unorganized and everything is everywhere. Both would definitely cause chaos while drunk
Sir Pentious is one where he definitely wouldn't trust them at first, but he's also a bit of a goofball. Aside from probably passing out if he tried to squeeze them because of their spines, Abyss likes his inability to take certain jokes (like in the Pilot when Angel calls him “daddy” and he confusedly goes “Son?”), and will help explain things when they can. I feel like he doesn't particularly like them until they show an interest in his gadgets or egg bois. Do they understand what he's talking about? Absolutely not, they just want to hold a gun
Now, for who you're probably waiting for, Alastor! He’s a bit more complicated. Not because he’s hit or miss with Abyss, I think he wouldn’t actually dislike them. Hell, he might even like them. More because he’s still a mystery in general and more… conflicting? I know that I already drew a picture of him taunting Abyss to make them shrink, but I can’t help but think of this page from the Hazbin Hotel comic that came out on the official site years ago
Tumblr media
From what we see in the whole comic, he only threatens the butcher when the butcher reaches for his cleaver to potentially strike at Alastor. Even then, when the butcher backs down and starts preparing his meat, Alastor doesn’t go full sicko mode. He’s perfectly chipper and back to being pleasant. It’s only when the butcher just grabs the sheep demon that he goes ballistic and ‘kills’ him. I don’t know if by ‘fairer means’ he just means weaker people/demons or just feminine people/demons (He came from the 1930s, he probably goes off appearance and voice rather than asking people pronouns)
Now, I’m not sure how canon the prequel comic is in general since it’s been years since it’s illustration, but we also see similar instances in the show. Maybe not exactly coming to the aid of someone off beat, but Alastor never really starts shit. He’s just fully prepared to finish it. He didn’t come after Vox, Vox started dissing him and then he retaliated effectively. He wasn’t really bothered by Sir Pentious, even when he blew up a wall, until he either mentioned the Vees or presumably just kept pestering Alastor to fight, where he defeated him soundly. Even with Lucifer, I think the reason he was so pissy on sight is that he was blatantly ignored at first and then immediately presumed to be the bellhop before Lucifer proceeded to insult his work on the decor and bash on the hotel before singing about obviously needing the ‘Big Boss of Hell’s help
Anyways, back to interpersonal relations between Abyss and Alastor.
He’d probably do the classic “I’m sure you’ve heard of me from my radio show” thing, to which Abyss would reply “I haven’t, sorry”. since they weren’t around before he left for seven years. Now, the thing that I think would make this a favorable interaction for Abyss is that they apologized. Regardless of whether it was a quick sorry or a genuinely sheepish look since Alastor always seems to have a massive point of pride on his radio show, they still did it. Angel Dust kind of just got told who he was by Vaggie in the pilot, but Lucifer downright disrespected this man by calling him a has-been because he hasn’t heard of the Radio Demon, even though the same King of Hell doesn’t even have a television either
I feel like Abyss could remain in Alastor’s… well, probably not favor, but good graces is the best phrase I can think of, as long as they are generally chill and polite enough. He’s surrounded by delinquents, murderers, rapists, and so on. I think a coping semi-depressed deer who curses like a sailor but generally doesn’t cause trouble is alright in his book. I think though that, like Lilia from Twisted Wonderland, he does like taunting and spooking them to get amusing reactions from them
I do love the idea of Alastor as a pred, but as of right now I can’t think of how it would escalate to that kind of situation realistically unless they REALLY pissed him off or something. Maybe I’ll think of something after the finale tonight, lmaoooo

Dear sweet author, poet-est of words, curator of comfort and IF deity of angst...I am not ok. WE are not ok. I'm going preface this "ask" that actually isn't one at all (my very first ever, mind you) with an apology for how rambly and unhinged and it may end up being. I've been wrestling back and forth with my Anxiety about sending this (people-ing makes me nervous) but after finishing Book 1 I cannot get your story out of my head, and you deserve all the love and gushing.
The plot, the characters, the prose are all just so amazing! You're so very talented and deserve all the recognition for this work of art. I've been with your story since before the first Chapter was released and it has gone from something I have enjoyed immensely to one of my favorite IF's ever and oh boy have I read a lot! The lore and environment are rich, and each character has a distinct voice that is their own. There are so many wonderful things I could say but I don't think I'm eloquent enough with words to do it justice.
*SPOLIERS AHEAD*
Reading through the last few chapters, specifically 11 and 12, for obvious reasons I believe I can confidently say I have gone through the 5 stages of grief and more. lol I knew what was coming and it still completely subverted all of my expectations. Played through first as my Milomancer and the literal gut punch I felt in some of that ending dialogue, specifically on whether he cares or not wrecked me. I haven't had a visceral response to a story like this in so long it completely took me by surprise. Oh, and can we just praise you for that buildup of suspense leading to the talk with Milo. I was legitimately holding my breath so convinced we were going to find him at Mals and it was just the invitation. *Screeches*
Anyway, reading this has made me an absolutely feral, sobbing, punching the air howling into the abyss of a mess and I just can't stop thinking of all the possibilities of things to come. When I finished, I immediately went back, read through all the routes with all the variations because I just couldn't get enough. It's crazy to see all the hints, correlation within everything and put it all together. Just genius. There are so many other things I want to touch upon, but this has gotten so out of hand, I apologize. (I hope this doesn't come off as too overly familiar) But now that I've finally sent my first ask I think I'll be comfortable sending more in the future.
So, congrats on technically finishing book 1!! I'm looking forward to reading the beefed-up version and in the future the next book (which ofcourse is a long way off). I'm sure you're chomping at the bit to get everything completed but I do hope you take time for yourself to just relax and be proud of all you have accomplished. Remember to stay hydrated and take care of yourself!
Much love from an old broad who is just a big fan <3
Unhinged asks are my favorite!!!!!
Thank you so much for being here from the get go. I look back on almost a year ago now and kind of feel like I was looking at someone who had no idea what she was doing but was going to barrel through it all anyway. Which, to be fair, is how I treat most things in life.
I'm so glad that you went back and read it again after chapter twelve! I have been peppering in little hints from the get go. So much so that I thought nearly every chapter, someone was going to call me out. LOL! And some people did but most did not which leaves me just in awe.
I've taken next to no time for me, if we're going to be honest. LOL! But I'm hoping to son. Mainly, personal life has been hectic so I am looking forward to sitting and diving into my work again.
I really hope you send more asks in the future! I'm not scary and would love to hear from you. Thank you again so much for reading!

tell me about your fucked up petz creatures
I WILL GO OVER My Main Cast. alphabetically as they appear in my funny box !
Starting off with ABYSS!! i love her dearly. she's a spamton mixie! specifically a blue addison + spamton + sparkle kittling. she's got no eyes or colors (she's got blue paw pads, thought!), leading to an unsettling appearance. i love her dearly, though! she's full of cheeky personality and she loves jumping through the hoop, if she isn't knocking it out of my hand. (or doing other things... she loves to mess around)
Tumblr media
up next is... asshole! yes. thats his name. he's my oldest spamton i currently have! he was originally a different spamton neo, but for petzspamton creator's comfort i converted him to be dib's spamton neo. being based on a siamese - he's picky and he's mean. he's an asshole. that name stuck with him. he used to wear an iconic sweater but this spamton neo kinda breaks shirts so he has a santa hat now!
also spamton neos in petz are known for. their. uhm. Thoughtful Gaze.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
next is... BIG BOY! MY BELOVED!! he is a gift from petzspamton for me based on my mega spamton neo design! he came named bigboy and since even my mega spamton neo's nickname has been bigboy. :] he's big, he's cuddly, he's gentle and he LOVES food. he also flops. a LOT. and genuinely when i say he loves food i mean it, he's based on a persian and those love food in petz. he seems very eepy today he's flopping less than usual but probably because of how wacky the room layout is + he's too interested in buck plush
Tumblr media Tumblr media
OLD BAD ART ALERT I DONDNT DRAW LIKE THIS NOW I DREW THIS IN MY FLOP ERA but heres mega sneo design. just for context!! (ye he got swapped wings but who cares)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
if you see similarities between this hair and the way i draw high roller, no you dont. no you fucking dont.
up next is cap'n! i'll be honest i dont play with him as often since i converted everyone from petz 5 to petz 4 - losing k_k in the progress </3. he just loves starting fights with everyone its no fun </3 but ANYWAYS!! this is a hexie made by YOURS TRULY! hes goofy
Tumblr media Tumblr media
can't show off cap'n without.. SWEET! oh boy after glados this is my most complicated hex. DO YOU KNOW HOW PAINFUL IT IS. TO MAKE A CUBE. OUT OF (SPHERES) (AND LINES THAT ARE VERY FUCKY) ITS HORRIBLE. sweet sweet sweet my dearest friend sweet they start fights sometimes too but are calmer than cap'n. they like playing with plushies a lot as you can see
Tumblr media Tumblr media
next is creature! a funky little spamton mixie. seriously this thing is like generation 7 and listing everything thats In Their Blood may take a while. they've got lovely spots and neat textures + are pretty big!!! their tip ends with a pink which is a fun contrast compared to the blue/white gradient. very silly fella!!!
Tumblr media
next is cupcake! one out of two silly kitties i got from bad_death ! they did a thing where they gave out unique textured/patterned fellas to people on petzcord. so these guys are unique! like everyone elses. i have other petz i got from other people that are hexed, but i don't have them in the playable petz folder right now. cupcake likes to flop around, too! what a lovely fuzzball... they also get scared of everything which isnt characteristic of a persian personality but. hey. the wordl is scaresy...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
next is dragonfruit with their funky shrimp tail !! also a spamton mixie - you can defo see similarities between them and creature. i believe they're related? anyways - the main breed they take from is cubus! they have calico personality so they are very playful!!

Where does putting importance to numbers and rankings or not come from? I was having a discussion with my friends yesterday and realized how utterly different we are in this respect: most of them asses movies and albums just by how much they liked them or not, calling the Avengers movies flop for example. I told them they are in fact huge phenomenons because, well, they are. I couldn't get through any of them so to me they're not good either, but numbers don't lie, they are a huge success (not to mention their culture impact, people of all ages and cultures love them). I thought it was fascinating that we both agreed on whether the thing was good or bad, but to me that's purely personal, to others it's like an objective assessment, so I got curious hw typology could explain it.
Hmm. To be honest, this could be either Fe or Te-related.
Coming at it from a Te perspective, your friends were wrong, because you could use facts to prove them wrong. Saying something is a "flop" when it has made a billion dollars worldwide is inaccurate; the facts (that people ponied up to see it multiple times, which is the only way movies make bank) contradict their emotionally-driven conclusion ("I hated it, so it's a flop in my mind"). It may suck in their head, but it didn't suck at the box office. It could be that they did not mean "flop" as in unsuccessful financially, but that they meant flop in context to themselves (I didn't like it, so it flopped with ME).
Jung described Fe as evaluating a piece of art based not on what the Fe user thought about it, but the collective weight others put on it -- he simplified it to, "People say this is a good, so it must be good." IE, the worth comes from whether or not others see its worth and agree upon its worth. Which is to say that Fe collects external data about what others think and feel about something to substantiate and support their own view of it -- "we" agree that this is high art, because everyone agrees on it. Everyone likes it, ergo it's pleasing to many and therefore good or important or serves its purpose.
Whereas Fi goes, "I loved it, so it's good." The assessment is not that it is objectively good, but that the Fi likes it. Or, "I hated it, therefore it has no value to me," in defiance of what worth others found in it.
You could take this a step further and bring critics into it -- what do you look for in a critic? For some, the best critic is someone who can evaluate from a logical point of view whether or not a movie works. For others, a good critic is someone who evaluates a movie based on more than its entertainment value. Critics tend to be Ti and Fe a lot of the time -- evaluating the flaws in a movie's structure in order to determine whether the movie can please its audience without being dumbed down or full of plot holes.
Movies can be successful without being any good.
(If you want a master class in ripping movies apart with logic, check out the Critical Drinker on YouTube. He gives unvarnished, unapologetic take-downs of bad plots, bloated franchises, over-blown super-heroes, and talks about how modern movies are slowly sinking into an abyss of abysmal writing. And he's just fun to listen to, although he does swear , so it's not "little kid safe." IMO, he's STP. My personal favorite recent quote was how critics will use "this is a giant metaphor" to excuse convoluted "sh*t writing." LOL)

Hey Echo! Was just updating my tag list and saw ur positive message, its awesome that you were able to find some physical merch for four of your f/os! Having something you can see and hold that represents your f/o is something that can be so personal haha 💖💖💖
And since you asked to hear something positive on my end, other than my new hyperfixation on Crash Bandicoot which I've been having tons of fun with, I got to visit my family last week and see my cats again! I hope life continues to go well for you! 😊💝💝💝
Hello Ruby! It’s lovely to hear from you! Thank you very much for sending this in ^-^
Awww, I’m really glad to hear that you were able to see your cats again, I’m sure they really enjoyed seeing you! And I must say that your new hyperfixation has really made me (and I’m sure many others) smile to see - I wasn’t really able to get into many Crash games myself unfortunately, but I do still own the party game on my DS! I think it’s called Crash Boom Bang? I’ve had that game for a very long time, and so seeing you and others on my dashboard start to talk about the series does bring a nice bit of nostalgia to me for that reason!
Also, thank you very much for your kind words about what I was able to get at the convention - I’m not sure I actually said what I got on this blog, but I managed to find and buy a Eula sticker, an Aqua badge (from the only person at the con whose art I actually recognised from the internet, which was a very odd feeling haha), I won an Umbreon print from a lucky dip that reminds me a lot of Luna, and I also got a Kirby badge! This was in addition to a Pyro Abyss Mage charm, which matches my self-insert, Lamia. I still need to figure out how to store and display my acquisitions, but I’m really happy to finally have some physical things, and I’m hoping it’s the start of many more items here and there ^-^
Thank you very much again for sending this to me, Ruby!! I’m glad you have also had some positive events in your life recently - may that continue to be the case for us both!~

genshin boys and the type of s/o they'd have
pairing: gn!reader x xiao, childe, kaeya, kazuha ( all separately )
warnings: none, not proof read
Tumblr media
childe:
-laid-back: the youngest of the fatui harbingers would no doubt enjoy someone who knows how to let loose and enjoy life. you have to be similar to him in this aspect - you two will often go with the flow, going from plotting the best ways to prank zhongli to having a picnic at the beach
-family-oriented: anyone who has seen Childe interact with his younger brother Teucer knows that he places a big importance on his familial relationships. he would be over the moon to see you get along well with his younger brother - it's even better if you end up being closer to Teucer than Childe is himself. he will tease and complain about this, but he will secretly love it as well
-childe needs someone who can see through the many walls he has built around himself. someone who can break down the facade of the ragtag harbinger and see him as the person he deep down is. the time he has spent in the abyss has sadly left him with many painful scars. please be there to soothe them.
Tumblr media
xiao:
-to catch the attention of the vigilant yaksha, you'd have to be someone interesting. someone who is able to entice his curiosity to the point where he just can't stay away.
-his significant other has to be very patient and understanding: he is trying, okay? yes, he has had enough time to observe human relationships but being in one of them is totally different.
-to date xiao, you also have to be independent. he will come to your rescue in no time if you call his name, but you will give him some peace of mind when you're apart if he knows that you can take care of yourself.
-warm, caring: he may not show it, but Xiao appreciates when someone shows care for him. "foolish human, adepti don't need to be looked after" he would say. what he wouldn't tell you, however, is the warmth that is spreading through his heart and the slight blush that is creeping up on his cheeks when he turns away from you
Tumblr media
kaeya:
-this man y'all
-someone flirty: we know that the cavalry captain has a knack for flirting and flustering people. now imagine him with someone who is able to turn the tables around and fluster him. his facial expression would be priceless. "someone is being very daring today..I might have to do something about this later"
-assertive: call him out on his bullshit please.
-you also have to be persistent. when he really falls for you, he will likely try to push you away. you deserve someone better than him, no? someone who can love you the way you deserve to be loved. he can't even tell you his story for gods' sake.
-he is probably also afraid of rejection. he has fallen for you, but what now? what if the archons are cruel enough to try and tear your relationship apart? what if you end up seeing the real him and it scares you away?
-when these thoughts could his mind, please tell him that he is enough. the past is the past. you love him for him and you're here to stay.
Tumblr media
kazuha:
-as a wanted man fleeing from Inazuma, he needs someone who can be his home. provide him with unchanging security, be his home even if he is constantly on the run.
-he'd enjoy someone who is well-versed in the arts. it doesn't necessarily mean that you have to be good at them, for it is your passion that catches his eye. sing him a lullaby, show him one of your paintings, recite a poem to him and he will he mesmerized forever
-someone brave and committed: he respects people who are fair, so it's likely that it is a quality that he would search for in a romantic relationship as well. his significant other would be someone who is passionate about what they do. who isn't afraid to stand up for themselves and the things they hold dear to their hearts.

Absolutely!
She should not be doing this. She knows she should not be doing this. She'd been warned against doing this.
But really, Quidditch practice ended half an hour ago. Surely he would have cleaned up by now. Right?
Hope this works! <33
This has not been edited, and it should have been edited, but screw it, I loved this prompt, I've stayed up way past bed time to write it, I wrote 1800 words instead of the 500 I planned, so have it in it's unedited glory and don't judge me too harshly. It's late, but its shirtless James Potter May or Jumpers off for June or really, just a thirst trap drabble to get your week going well.
Lily knocked softly on the door to the locker rooms, her breath caught in her throat, a thrum of anxiety running in her veins. When there was no sound, no answering call, no bid to enter, she paused for only moments, before biting her lip and pushing on the door handle.
She should not be doing this.
Her footsteps were quiet as she made her way down the long corridor that led to the locker rooms. Doors of the unoccupied rooms were shut, her finger tips dragged against the names of each team as she went. Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, Slytherin, and then finally, at the very end, Gryffindor. Unlike the others, this door was set slightly jar, light seen through the gaps, but no sounds emerged. The team had clearly departed.
She knows she should not be doing this.
Lily gritted her teeth, taking a deep breath as she pushed open the door, wide enough for her to slip through. It closed gently after her, allowing her to lean back against it, hands still caught on the handle behind her. She clutched the handle for dear life, knowing she should turn it and go back through. Knowing that to go further into the room was a boundary she shouldn’t cross.
She’d be warned against doing this.
As expected, the locker room was at least empty. She’d never been in here before, not being on the team, and never before having anyone she’d wanted to follow into the abyss. The reality was as bad as Lily had imagined. Likely due to the graces and actions of the house elves, it was cleaner than expected. There were no used towels piling around, no dirty, soiled uniforms discarded. The walls were filled with posters and pictures of Gryffindor Quidditch teams throughout the years. Banners and scarves lined the players' open lockers, caught on the name plates fastened above each one.
Almost as soon as she noted the name plates, her eyes caught on one in particular. A name that had fallen from her lips more often than her own had this year. A name that used to come out with derision, but was now pronounced with warmth, with feeling, with an unexplainable but inexplicable feeling of joy. The locker below it was the least orderly of them all, clothing still hung on the hooks, shoes and boots underneath the bench seat in front of it. Shin guards and pads and flying goggles still littered the bench and shelf.
The captain himself was nowhere to be found however. The sound of running water drew her attention to another doorway, at the far end of the locker room. Steam poured out of that room, leaving Lily in doubt that it was the way to the showers. Somewhere she definitely shouldn’t be going. She could wait out here for him. She only wanted to check on him, close the loop on their earlier conversation. She felt guilty for leaving him hanging, but that was no reason to follow him into the showers, surely.
But, really, Quidditch practise ended half an hour ago. Surely, he would have cleaned up by now. Right?
With that solid, solid reasoning ringing in her brain, spurring her on despite a wealth of misgivings, Lily moved forward. Her heart was racing but her movements somehow remained slow, cautious.
“Potter?” she called at the doorway.
No answer came.
Lily shook her head, cheeks already turning red as she contemplated her next action seconds before completing it.
She was only two steps in when she pulled up short.
James stood under the shower, mere metres from where Lily herself stood. A low wall hid most of his lower anatomy, but his back was on full display. Water ran in rivulets over strong, broad, tanned shoulders. It drained off his elbows as James reached to scrub at his hair, a movement Lily had seen him do a million times across their seven years of schooling, but never when he was wet. Certainly not when he was otherwise naked. His back arched, showing the muscles down his spine, lifting the beginnings of the curve of his arse into view.
“Fuck,” Lily whispered, her mouth having gone completely dry.
Of course, while he hadn’t heard her earlier call, he heard her quiet swear. Or maybe he’d felt the weight of her entranced, intoxicated stare. Before Lily could remove herself from a situation she definitely shouldn’t be in, even if it was the most beautiful site she’d seen all day, all week, all year, James turned.
“Lil- Evans,” he said in surprise, jumping slightly, before shutting off the water and reaching for the towel resting on the edge of the wall. “What’s wrong?”
“Noth- shit, I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have -”Lily started, taking a step back, only she missed the doorway and landed against the wall next to instead.
It really wasn’t her fault she couldn’t focus.
If James’ back with a gift of meticulously carved marble, smooth skin and muscle that Lily just wanted to sink her teeth into, then his front was a bloody work of art. Well defined pectorals sat prominently, on his chest, surrounded by curved shoulders, impressive biceps that helped his brilliant throws on the field. Pools of water had collected in the curve of his collarbones, enough that Lily could have lapped happily to ease her suddenly restricted throat.
She’d seen glimpses of his abdominals before. He was always reaching for his hair, running a hand through the beautiful, silky locks, she couldn’t help but get flashes as his shirt, or t-shirt, or jumper lifted up. Especially when he was already stretching back across the couch, complaining about the Prefect’s schedule, the points schedule, or the meeting schedule. Any schedule really, just because he knew it would rile her up. So she’d seen his stomach from time to time. Knew his prowess on the Pitch couldn’t come from someone who wasn’t totally fit. But seeing it glistening, rippling as he moved, shadows from the dimmed bathroom lighting emphasising each curve, well…
It was really more than one girl could be expected to take.
“Evans,” James tried again, frowning as he finished wrapping a towel around his waist and stepped out of the shower area toward her. “What’s going on? What’s wrong?”
Lily tried not to focus on how the twisted knot of the towel sat dead centre below his navel. How it drew the eyeline down. How the muscles in his sides pointed down like an arrow toward that knot, making her wonder what was underneath the knot.
“Uh,” Lily forced her eyes up. “I, uh, wanted to talk to you.”
She pretended not to notice how droplets collected on his eyelashes, so much easier to see without his glasses. How his face was devoid of its usual smirk, concern etched across his face instead, furrowing his brow, straightening his smile.
“Sure,” James glanced around, “I was coming back to the castle, you could have waited.”
“I couldn’t,” Lily blurted, before she could stop herself. “I couldn’t wait.”
James quirked an eyebrow, but paused in his steps, now less than three steps from her. At this distance, she could smell him. He was perfumed by that familiar scent of pine and spice, but in the heat and the humidity of the room it surrounded her, consumed her. She tried to take a deep breath in, to focus and prepare herself, but all it did was allow the scent to overwhelm her.
“Well, have at it, Evans,” he encouraged. “I’m listening.”
“Well, before, earlier.. You, uh… you asked, well and I, you, I didn’t,” Lily sighed impatiently at her stuttering, rolling her eyes before realising that meant she couldn’t look at him. Tried to remind herself not to look at him, it was clearly too much to look at such a sight and string a sentence together. Much more of her blithering and he wouldn’t care for what she had to say, mad woman that she was.
“Still waiting, Evans,” James teased now, a small curve of his lips appearing now. He seemed to be realising what had her in such a fluster, and took another step forward. Within reaching distance. Touching distance.
“Oh, fuck it,” Lily breathed, and gave in.
There was no resistance as she reached out and snagged James by the hand, then his waist, then his neck. She tugged his head down, and it came easily until, with a final push on her toes, she crashed her lips against his. His mouth moved without hesitation, giving as good as he got, pushing her back into the wall with a satisfying oof, his teeth finding her bottom lip, pulling it until her mouth opened and the punishing kiss turned into something deeper, sweeter, more satisfying.
Lily’s hands threaded into his hair, before dancing down to shoulders, stroking along his chest. She couldn’t pick a place she wanted them to rest, so she just didn’t, and touched and admired and petted to her heart’s content. James didn’t appear to mind her cheek was cupped, her waist wrapped up with one of those delicious arms she’d admired. He was still warm from the shower, still damp from neglecting to dry off, and she could feel that heat pushing through her clothes, flattening them against her, allowing his touch to burn through to her needy skin.
Without meaning too, having not consciously thought the action through, Lily’s hand landed on the knot in the towel she’d been so focused on moments earlier. The action gave them both reason to pause, and James pulled back just enough as they panted for breath and stared at each other.
She’d never seen his eyes so black, the hazel almost completely hidden dilated pupils and a blazing fire that would have taken her breath, if only his lips hadn’t done the job already. His tongue darted out to wet his lips, and Lily’s eyes followed the movement closely, her newly acquired knowledge of the feel, the taste of his tongue, making her imagine in a way that was all too real, how it would feel if he did the same to her.
“You had an answer for me, Evans?” his voice was hoarse, husky, like he’d run a marathon in the seconds, minutes, that they’d been kissing.
“I hardly think it matters now,” Lily’s laugh was almost bitter as it escaped from her, as she pushed back wet hair from his forehead, brushing her thumb softly across the scar above his eyebrow.
“Tell me anyway,” his fingers brushed down her arm, tipped her chin up, catching her lips again for a brief but perfect kiss.
Lily sighed, kissed him again to stall, cupped his face with both her hands to make sure he was paying attention. She was only going to say this once.
“Yes, I’d love to go to Hogsmeade with you next weekend.”

Genshin Fic Recs
so... i ventured into the vast world of Google looking for some good GI fic recs... only to find such a pitiful amount that i was promptly devastated. therefore, the solution is to make my own! :D
keep in mind most of these will be ChiLi or XingYun, and yes, i will try not to include smut unless it was one i really really liked. if anyone wants a separate list for just smut (though that will most likely be shorter) i can try to make one later.`
ft. my bookmark comments :)
CHILI
wrapped up in pure gold by beyondwinter
(chili; accidental marriage; chili/childe-centric; 22k words; ongoing)
"Do you understand its meaning, Childe?" He finally asks. There's a hard glint in his eyes, like he's trying to steel himself for his answer.
"Yeah." Loyalty and devotion, right? Between business partners? "I do. It's traditional, isn't it?"
Zhongli's eyes glow a warm amber in the near darkness, reflecting the soft shine of the lanterns. He studies his face with a strange intensity, as though Childe were a piece of high quality Nocticulous Jade being sold for suspiciously small sum and he's trying to find the blemishes that would explain the price. The weight of his gaze should be uncomfortable, boring into him like he can see into the very depths of his abyss-tainted soul, but Childe finds himself preening under the attention instead.
Childe accidentally proposes to Zhongli. Zhongli accepts.
The World is Water by Millereflets
(chili; smut; hurt/comfort; chili-centric; 7k words; oneshot)
Childe doesn't visit Zhongli until it's almost too late.
(my bookmarks: HOW DO YOU MAKE A SMUT SCENE SO POETIC HOLY SHITTTTT)
Set in Stone by seredemia
(chili; fake dating au; angst; some smut?; chili/chiilde-centric; 55k words; ongoing)
What do you do when you write about a certain six thousand year old consultant so much in your letters that it somehow convinces your entire family you're not only dating each other, but that you're also engaged?
In Childe's case, the answer is plain and simple: he goes along with it, of course. Absolutely nothing can go wrong if he makes a contract with the God of Contracts, vowing that the two of them will pretend to be lovers for the duration of his family's stay in Liyue. Afterwards, they'll return as normal and speak no more of this mess. No feelings or complications involved whatsoever.
Contract accepted. A fool-proof plan set in stone. Right?
Private Ledger of the Eleventh Harbinger by JuHuaTai
(chili; humor; getting together; chili/ekaterina-centric; 5k words; oneshot)
“So guess what I did next?”
Ekaterina contemplated not answering, but Harbinger Tartaglia was just… grinning and waiting. It’s honestly rather creepy the longer time passed.
In the end, she gave a long suffering sigh that seems lost on him, “You bought him the Erhu—“
“I bought him the antique, cor lapis based Erhu,”
-
When she first left her homeland for the unknown nation of Liyue, Ekaterina was ready to be many things: To be a soldier, to fell Tsaritsa’s enemies in her name, to bring glory to Snezhnaya and her leader.
Being a receptionist in a cozy bank wasn’t so bad in comparison, but she absolutely can do without the front row seat to Harbinger Tartaglia’s (expensive) love life.
i know i'm where i'm meant to go by paperclips (pastel_paperclips)
(chili; humor; fluff; chili-centric; 12k words; ongoing)
"Childe," Zhongli says suddenly. "I am enjoying myself greatly." Childe’s face breaks into a grin. "Then-" Zhongli gasps, grabbing his wrist and tugging him over to an unsuspecting peddler with a cart full of rocks. "Is that an intrusive igneous pegmatite formed in the Inazuma regions?" Childe’s grin smooths into a small, adoring smile. He has all the time in the world to figure the other man out.
OR: Finding the Geo Archon is on Childe's to-do list but hanging out with Zhongli is significantly more fun.
CHILIVEN
Crumbling Stone by avtorSola
(chiliven; ANGST; PAIN; mind control; zhongli-centric; 74k words; ongoing)
When Morax unleashes his plan to test the Liyue Qixing and his adepti, he does not take into account the stirring of the Abyss Order in the north and the corruption of Dvalin - for why would he fear an organization that works in such shadows? He is secure in his power, after all, unlike his flighty ex, the absentee archon of Mondstadt who rises only when his people are in danger.
But, somehow, the Abyss Order discovers his plan. Somehow, they capitalize on it. And he, the God of Stone who cannot sicken, is struck down - taken by an order bent on destroying all of humanity as Liyue crumbles around him. For even Archons aren't immune to Durin's blood, and Morax is no exception. But then the question becomes - if even Archons may fall to the agony of this corrupting burn - how is their traveling friend Aether immune?
The answer comes from beyond the stars - an ancient malice that knows no kindness or mercy. A malice whose legacy the Abyss Order now bears, seeking to topple all the Archons and their people into the void of utter destruction. And they have begun in Liyue.
Fortunately, it takes a long time to erode stone.

Hello! I’d like to share some of my notes if I were to Beta-read the most recent Archon Quest. I will be going through what worked, what could be taken out, and what could’ve been better. Note that I’m looking at this through an editor’s lens so I’m going to try NOT to change the plot we were given no matter what my opinions are about it BUT some of the said opinions may slip out.
Also, a bit of a disclaimer: I know that Genshin isn’t an actual literary work but miHoYo is known for its writers’ great storytelling and I’ve always loved their work so it really came as a surprise as to what happened to the mess that is Inazuma Act 3. So yeah.
Contains:
1. What was foreshadowed about the characters and why the payoff of their portrayals felt cheap.
a. About Kokomi and the rebellion.
b. About the Fatui, the James Bond villain wannabe.
c. About Ei and the Raiden Shogun.
2. How Chapter 2, Act 3 could have been the turning point that would have us, as the Traveler, cement our perceptions of the Archons and Gods of Celestia OR what I think the death of Signora was supposed to be but was undermined by this one tidbit.
BONUS: I wrote this before Kokomi’s story quest was released but decided to wait for it before posting. And guess what? I think Kokomi’s Story Quest works better as an Archon Quest. At least, some parts of it.
miHoYo teased us this intelligent leader of the resistance that is well-versed in the Art of War. The end of Ch2: Act 2 showed us a powerful Kokomi. So why was she sidelined all throughout the act?
I actually like the idea of the resistance asking the Fatui for aid. But miHoYo chickened out and made it so that they did it unknowingly. To which I say: how? If Kokomi was so smart she should’ve known better. I figured it was the Fatui within a single sentence, so why didn’t Kokomi?
They should’ve stuck with the concept of the underdogs – or in Kokomi’s words, the little fish – of war in an act of desperation. They could’ve shown a calculated Kokomi “making a deal with the devil” and will do anything to win the fight against the Shogunate.
In her Character Teaser, she was willing to burn the enemies’ supplies – to starve the enemy. She can be ruthless, that’s why Kokomi actively giving Delusions to her foot soldiers would have made much more sense to cause the Fatui to be involved rather than the whole “the Fatui orchestrated everything” schtick.
Which brings me to my next point: when did the Fatui turn into a James Bond villain? I hate that trope so much. It’s like the Deus Ex Machina of villainy. It’s lazy. And it doesn’t even fit the Fatui’s modus operandi.
In the prologue, the Abyss Order corrupted Dvalin and the Fatui was just there waiting to steal Barbatos’ gnosis while the Knights are distracted. Morax decided to retire one day so the Fatui swept right in and offered a test of Liyue in exchange for his gnosis.
The last two locations had their own story to tell while the Fatui was just in the background like the opportunistic antagonist that they are.
It also would have been a stronger plotline to have the already set lore – like the tenuous relationship between Watatsumi and Narukami – be the driving force of the Inazuman Civil War.
The prologue and chapter 1 also delivered what we are told we’re going to get in the Story Preview. That’s why they are satisfying. However, with chapter 2, the way it ended turned out to be more about the Fatui rather than “what do mortals see of the eternity chased after by their god.”
Sure, we got the consequences of the war in the World Quests and some of it in the second act. But making the Fatui the Big Bad in the end takes value away from the actions of the characters that are supposed to be the main feature of this chapter.
How much of the Eternity the Raiden Shogun is pursuing is directly from Ei? How much of it is its own understanding of eternity, coupled with Ei’s memories, and its own response? How much of it is the Fatui’s influence?
I have to say though, I’m fine with the puppet actually. Believe it or not. I have had kinda figured that out with the weird shifting of emotions in and out of the puppet. And the dead glowing eyes. So kudos to the design and animation team for that foreshadowing.
It was also said that the current Electro Archon lost someone dear to her and, while I didn’t think it was a twin, I did figure that the current Electro Archon wasn’t the real Electro Archon. So the whole Baal and Beelzebul backstory didn’t really surprise me. So I guess that was foreshadowed too? But my friends didn’t feel the same way so I don’t know. I’m not touching that.
But I do agree that all of the new lore got info-dumped to us by Yae rather than have us find out about them. To be honest, I would have wanted the backstory of Ei to be in her story quest rather than it be in the Archon Quest. A World Quest could work too.
I just feel like the 2.1 Archon Quest ended up cramming so many themes and subplots when it should’ve been focusing on what was promised: the darkness that is brought by their god.
They already had set up the Visions are people’s motivations/ambitions and that taking them away also takes away their agency.
Then they could’ve played with the idea of the people of Watatsumi looking up to Kokomi as their pseudo-god in-place of Orobashi and so with her actively giving Delusions could fit well in the said theme.
They could’ve made Ei and Kokomi character foils of each other and have the final showdown be about them.
And then it’ll all, of course, end up with the people of Inazuma learning how to work without their “gods” or something like that, which is the overarching theme of the whole series if you think about it.
But as I said, my opinions about the plot shouldn’t matter and I’m only here to make what was already written better.
So let’s talk about something that the puppet has done which didn’t make any sense on the surface level but could’ve been clever if it was done right. Killing La Signora.
Okay. So there is a pivotal moment at the end of the first arc of a three-act story where the main character experiences something that will leave them no choice but to move forward. This usually is a physical thing like Alice falling down the rabbit hole. But it can also be a mental or emotional situation.
Over at Honkai, the first arc ended with the death of a beloved mentor and a shattered world (both external and internal). The characters had no choice but to step up and “to stay alive, bravely” (yes, I won’t stop using this line ever). It was so very well done and even after so many years it still hurt no matter how many times you reread/rewatch the scene.
This reread value is what shows how much a twist is well written.
And that is what miHoYo is known for. So I had high expectations with the plot twist (technically this pivotal moment is called a plot twist because it twists the feel and/or pace of the story). Chapter 2 is the perfect spot to end the first act of a seven-chaptered story. So I’m really preparing myself for the inevitable twist.
But then we ended up with Signora’s death.
Okay. So. They could have used that to show us, as the traveler, how Archons and Celestial beings are unfeeling and not to be trusted. We were told this repeatedly by Dainsleiff and by the Abyss Twin. But it is only textbook writing 101 to show NOT tell.
And Signora’s death could have been this portrayal. Although, to be honest, it would have been more impactful if the one who died is a friend of the Traveler.
Them seeing someone die at the hands of an Archon could have their idea of gods shift. Because there is no turning back once you see the proof right in front of your eyes.
But instead, the puppet did it. So what was the point of Signora’s death if not just a power demonstration? We already knew that the Raiden Shogun is powerful. So why did Signora have to die?
Sure, one can argue that the puppet was enacting the Ei’s will so maybe there was a point. But! In Ei’s story quest, we were told that the puppet would have no hesitation when it comes to killing whereas Ei can show mercy.
Which begs, again, the question: how much of the Raiden Shogun’s actions is a reflection of Ei’s will, and how much of it is a logic response of an artificial intelligence from Ei’s memories?
Honestly? I don’t like that they killed off Signora. It doesn’t feel right. I would’ve taken Beidou’s death over Signora’s no matter how much I love Beidou. There was just no build-up to it and it feels weak. I… didn’t feel anything besides confusion. The anger only came later because of the wasted potential.
But overall, I do think they could’ve made it work if it were actually Ei doing the killing.
--
So I just did Kokomi’s Story Quest and man. The soldiers wanting to continue the war is what they really should have made the motivations of the actual war rather than have it as a post-war response and then have Kokomi fix their mess.
Seriously. While it was really interesting to see the usual trauma response of soldiers who had only known war their whole life, they wasted this idea, man.
Before doing the Archon Quest I had thought that the Watatsumi had a hand on the Vision Hunt Decree. Because if I were a tactician, I would have made something to anger the people of my enemies and have them have their internal issues. And while the Shogunate is weak, that’s when I will strike and claim Inazuma for my people and my god.
Then Orobashi will rise once more.
Yep.
Obviously, I really wanted Kokomi to be a more active character in the Archon Quest.
Anyways. If you reached the end, thank you for reading this ~1.5k words of musings. Tell me what you think. Or don’t. You do you.

In Focus: The Mummy
Dominic Corry responds on behalf of Letterboxd to an impassioned plea to bump up the average rating of the 1999 version of The Mummy—and asks: where is the next great action adventure coming from?
We recently received the following email regarding the Stephen Sommers blockbuster The Mummy:
To whom it may concern,
I am writing to you on behalf of the nation, if not the entire globe, who frankly deserve better than this after months of suffering with the Covid pandemic.
I was recently made aware that the rating of The Mummy on your platform only stands at 3.3 stars out of five. … This, as I’m sure you’re aware, is simply unacceptable. The Mummy is, as a statement of fact, the greatest film ever made. It is simply fallacious that anyone should claim otherwise, or that the rating should fail to reflect this. This oversight cannot be allowed to stand.
I have my suspicions that this rating has been falsely allocated due to people with personal axes to grind against The Mummy, most likely other directors who are simply jealous that their own artistic oeuvres will never attain the zenith of perfection, nor indeed come close to approaching the quality or the cultural influence of The Mummy. There is, quite frankly, no other explanation. The Mummy is, objectively speaking, a five-star film (… I would argue that it in fact transcends the rating sytem used by us mere mortals). It would only be proper, as a matter of urgency, to remove all fake ratings (i.e. any ratings [below] five stars) and allow The Mummy’s rating to stand, as it should, at five stars, or perhaps to replace the rating altogether with a simple banner which reads “the greatest film of all time, objectively speaking”. I look forward to this grievous error being remedied.
Best, Anwen
Which of course: no, we would never do that. But the vigor Anwen expresses in her letter impressed us (we checked: she’s real, though is mostly a Letterboxd lurker due to a busy day-job in television production, “so finding time to watch anything that isn’t The Mummy is, frankly, impossible… not that there’s ever any need to watch anything else, of course.”).
So Letterboxd put me, Stephen Sommers fan, on the job of paying homage to the last great old-school action-adventure blockbuster, a film that straddles the end of one cinematic era and the beginning of the next one. And also to ask: where’s the next great action adventure coming from?
Tumblr media
Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz and John Hannah in ‘The Mummy’ (1999).
When you delve into the Letterboxd reviews of The Mummy, it quickly becomes clear how widely beloved the film is, 3.3 average notwithstanding. Of more concern to the less youthful among us is how quaintly it is perceived, as if it harkens back to the dawn of cinema or something. “God, I miss good old-fashioned adventure movies,” bemoans Holly-Beth. “I have so many fond memories of watching this on TV with my family countless times growing up,” recalls Jess. “A childhood classic,” notes Simon.
As alarming as it is to see such wistful nostalgia for what was a cutting-edge, special-effects-laden contemporary popcorn hit, it has been twenty-one years since the film was released, so anyone currently in their early 30s would’ve encountered the film at just the right age for it to imprint deeply in their hearts. This has helped make it a Raiders of the Lost Ark for a specific Letterboxd demographic.
Tumblr media
Sommers took plenty of inspiration from the Indiana Jones series for his take on The Mummy (the original 1932 film, also with a 3.3 average, is famously sedate), but for ten-year-olds in 1999, it may have been their only exposure to such pulpy derring-do. And when you consider that popcorn cinema would soon be taken over by interconnected on-screen universes populated by spandex-clad superheroes, the idea that The Mummy is an old-fashioned movie is easier to comprehend.
However, for all its throwbackiness, beholding The Mummy from the perspective of 2020 reveals it to have more to say about the future of cinema than the past. 1999 was a big year for movies, often considered one of the all-time best, but the legacy of The Mummy ties it most directly to two of that year’s other biggest hits: Star Wars: Episode One—The Phantom Menace and The Matrix. These three blockbusters represented a turning point for the biggest technological advancement to hit the cinematic art-form since the introduction of sound: computer-generated imagery, aka CGI. The technique had been widely used from 1989’s The Abyss onwards, and took significant leaps forward with movies such as Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), Jurassic Park (1993) and Starship Troopers (1997), but the three 1999 films mentioned above signified a move into the era when blockbusters began to be defined by their CGI.
Tumblr media
A year before The Mummy, Sommers had creatively utilised CGI in his criminally underrated sci-fi action thriller Deep Rising (another film that deserves a higher average Letterboxd rating, just sayin’), and he took this approach to the next level with The Mummy. While some of the CGI in The Mummy doesn’t hold up as well as the technopunk visuals presented in The Matrix, The Mummy showed how effective the technique could be in an historical setting—the expansiveness of ancient Egypt depicted in the movie is magnificent, and the iconic rendering of Imhotep’s face in the sand storm proved to be an enduringly creepy image. Not to mention those scuttling scarab beetles.
George Lucas wanted to test the boundaries of the technique with his insanely anticipated new Star Wars film after dipping his toe in the digital water with the special editions of the original trilogy. Beyond set expansions and environments, a bunch of big creatures and cool spaceships, his biggest gambit was Jar Jar Binks, a major character rendered entirely through CGI. And we all know how that turned out.
Tumblr media
A CGI-enhanced Arnold Vosloo as Imhotep.
Sommers arguably presented a much more effective CGI character in the slowly regenerating resurrected Imhotep. Jar Jar’s design was “bigger” than the actor playing him on set, Ahmed Best. Which is to say, Jar Jar took up more space on screen than Best. But with the zombie-ish Imhotep, Sommers (ably assisted by Industrial Light & Magic, who also worked on the Star Wars films) used CGI to create negative space, an effect impossible to achieve with practical make-up—large parts of the character were missing. It was an indelible visual concept that has been recreated many times since, but Sommers pioneered its usage here, and it contributed greatly to the popcorn horror threat posed by the character.
Sommers, generally an unfairly overlooked master of fun popcorn spectacle (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra is good, guys), deserves more credit for how he creatively utilized CGI to elevate the storytelling in The Mummy. But CGI isn’t the main reason the film works—it’s a spry, light-on-its-feet adventure that presents an iconic horror property in an entertaining and adventurous new light. And it happens to feature a ridiculously attractive cast all captured just as their pulchritudinous powers were peaking.

Meme-worthy: “My sexual orientation is the cast of ‘The Mummy’ (1999).”
A rising star at the time, Brendan Fraser was mostly known for comedic performances, and although he’d proven himself very capable with his shirt off in George of the Jungle (1997), he wasn’t necessarily at the top of anyone’s list for action-hero roles. But he is superlatively charming as dashing American adventurer Rick O’Connell. His fizzy chemistry with Weisz, playing the brilliant-but-clumsy Egyptologist Evie Carnahan, makes the film a legitimate romantic caper. The role proved to be a breakout for Weisz, then perhaps best known for playing opposite Keanu Reeves in the trouble-plagued action flop Chain Reaction, or for her supporting role in the Liv Tyler vehicle Stealing Beauty.
“90s Brendan Fraser is what Chris Pratt wishes he was,” argues Holly-Beth. “Please come back to us, Brendaddy. We need you.” begs Joshhh. “I’d like to thank Rachel Weisz for playing an integral role in my sexual awakening,” offers Sree.
Then there’s Oded Fehr as Ardeth Bey, a member of the Medjai, a sect dedicated to preventing Imhotep’s tomb from being discovered, and Patricia Velásquez as Anck-su-namun, Imhotep’s cursed lover. Both stupidly good-looking. Heck, Imhotep himself (South African Arnold Vosloo, coming across as Billy Zane’s more rugged brother), is one of the hottest horror villains in the history of cinema.
“Remember when studio movies were sexy?” laments Colin McLaughlin. We do Colin, we do.

Sommers directed a somewhat bloated sequel, The Mummy Returns, in 2001, which featured the cinematic debut of one Dwayne Johnson. His character got a spin-off movie the following year (The Scorpion King), which generated a bunch of DTV sequels of its own, and is now the subject of a Johnson-produced reboot. Brendan Fraser came back for a third film in 2008, the Rob Cohen-directed The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Weisz declined to participate, and was replaced by Maria Bello.
Despite all the follow-ups, and the enduring love for the first Sommers film, there has been a sadly significant dearth of movies along these lines in the two decades since it was released. The less said about 2017 reboot The Mummy (which was supposed to kick-off a new Universal Monster shared cinematic universe, and took a contemporary, action-heavy approach to the property), the better.

The Rock in ‘The Mummy Returns’ (2001).
For a long time, adventure films were Hollywood’s bread and butter, but they’re surprisingly thin on the ground these days. So it makes a certain amount of sense that nostalgia for the 1999 The Mummy continues to grow. You could argue that many of the superhero films that dominate multiplexes count as adventure movies, but nobody really sees them that way—they are their own genre.
There are, however, a couple of films on the horizon that could help bring back old-school cinematic adventure. One is the long-planned—and finally actually shot—adaptation of the Uncharted video-game franchise, starring Tom Holland. The games borrow a lot from the Indiana Jones films, and it’ll be interesting to see how much that manifests in the adaptation.
Then there’s Letterboxd favorite David Lowery’s forever-upcoming medieval adventure drama The Green Knight, starring Dev Patel and Alicia Vikander (who herself recently rebooted another video-game icon, Lara Croft). Plus they are still threatening to make another Indiana Jones movie, even if it no longer looks like Steven Spielberg will direct it.
While these are all exciting projects—and notwithstanding the current crisis in the multiplexes—it can’t help but feel like we may never again get a movie quite like The Mummy, with its unlikely combination of eye-popping CGI, old-fashioned adventure tropes and a once-in-a-lifetime ensemble of overflowing hotness. Long may love for it reign on Letterboxd—let’s see if we can’t get that average rating up, the old fashioned way. For Anwen.

Yellow Tape Review
Zayn rapping is the gift that keeps on giving!!! We got three (3) new tracks last week, on Dropbox of all places, and I have spent the past week gathering my thoughts, or forming thoughts beyond scream**, on them. ‘YELLOW TAPE’ acts as a sort of continuation of ‘YELLOW METAL’ in my opinion, on both sonic and lyrical levels. I think these tracks give us a different side of Zayn as a rapper. He is essentially speaking his mind, whatever is on it. There is certainly power in that, no denying it. I found that there isn't much of a story being told, or perhaps many pieces of different stories being told together. ‘YELLOW TAPE’ explores self-expression.
I am always proud of Zayn for sharing his art and himself in this way with us. To do it away from major streaming services and purchase creates intimacy with his fanbase, which I deeply appreciate. I wonder if we will get more rap music from Zayn in the future.
For now though, my thoughts on each track can be found below the cut for anyone that is interested in my interpretation.
GRIMEZ — Right away, I loved the flow of ‘GRIMEZ’. What I loved possibly even more was Zayn outright saying "fuck K*nye." We stan!! This track is very stream-of-consciousness based. One of the lyrics that jumped out at me straight off the bat was "pioneer hybrid force like an inside Prius." The simile is obvious but there is so many layers to Zayn that is a hybrid. He's a singer and now a rapper. He's a mixed raced British-Pakistani man and he has been a pioneer for Desi representation in mainstream music. On this note, "saving the rupees / one time for the Sufis" serves as a nod to his roots, not only in relation to ethnicity and religion, but socio-economic status. Zayn comes from a working class background, "saving the rupees" also nods to that lifestyle in which saving money can be pivotal. In the second verse, I think Zayn probably wrote my favourite lines on this whole project: "Hercules, still looking for the Zeus, me / Hades tried but he never did phase me," because I'm a huge nerd when it comes to Greek mythology. I love the way he tackles power and death without directly saying it. This song makes me very interested to have a conversation with him, which will happen never, because there are so many different facets to display here.
BELIEVE ME — Zayn said "don't mean to get too deep but I'm working on a better me" and I melted. Then he goes on to talk about his daughter and fatherhood and when I heard that line my face turned into this emoji: 🥺. I particularly love the lyric "wont become my father / run from my genes in jeans / I'm getting farther from being mean" because same. I will not speculate as to the relationship he has with his father. That's not what we do on this blog. The reason that line resonated with me is because regardless of how much I love my parents, I don't want to parent any future children I may have the way they did me. I think there is something to be said of breaking a cycle of generational trauma, particularly as a Brown person. More power to him. I think if I had to pick a favourite track, it would be this one. There are some excellent lyrical moments on this. I think my favourite is "the black hole I’ve been feeding has just opened the door / left me floating in abyss / I'm a poet 'cause I see things before they exist." He plays with his flow and the production and adds so many details to it (like the Nokia ringtone, for example) that I find really clever and enjoyable. I like it when music amuses me.
47 11 — "The goal is yourself without a goal" seems a very eloquent expression of Zayn's approach to his career, which he seems to echo in the first verse ("said "fuck it" to the promo" ). I love the way he takes agency over his career in that first verse, something a lot of people like to claim he doesn't have. I love the concept of angel numbers in this song, particularly in relation to the lyrics "my mental health reaching God level / I don't mean I'm a God / but 47 and 11 greets me on all levels." The number 47 is associated with congratulations on diligence in achieving ambitions (from 4) and spiritual progress (from 7); and the number 11 is associated with spiritual awakening. We know that rap is often self-aggrandising but even with that in mind, I feel this song speaks to Zayn's self-confidence. The part where he raps "Yellow Metl tryna tell you something it's not settled / this old kettle reaching a boiling point / contribute your voice," is the most direct link to the last rap track he released in which he discussed a lot of deep rooted social justice issues and he is urging his listeners to continue that fight. Coming off the lyric about his grandfather coming from Pakistan to a new land earlier in the song, there is a link to his roots and the particular difficulties he has been exposed to. I find it interesting because he also talked about his grandfather on 'cathartic.' I also loved his vocal delivery at the end. It's simply gorgeous, I don't know what else to say about it.
