- though he's kinda bad at cooking, his baking skills are okay! his favorite pastry to make are cookies because he can design them the most.

In May 2022, I came into contact with Barry Kent MacKay when I reached out to ask for permission to use his art in a project. I never could have anticipated that within just a few months, I would have exchanged over a hundred emails.

We talk about birds. We talk about life. We talk about his late mother, his favorite artists that inspired him, our struggles, our joys.

He has been painting since the 1960s, and his work is breathtakingly gorgeous, often life size, including oils, watercolors, and acrylics. He's also sent ink and pen sketches, not available online, and I cherish each one like a special gift.

hey! i was just curious if i could use your art in an artist study? i looked over your faq and i didn't see any mention of it so i just wanted to ask. it's okay if the answer is now, no pressure :)

(⁠ ⁠ꈍ⁠ᴗ⁠ꈍ⁠) sure, if you credit me! i would be incredibly flattered!!

now that being said, i would also like to share with you some artists whose work i've enjoyed doing studies of! i find it's very useful to "follow the money" with artists you like, and go along the chain of inspiration to see how ideas and styles can change from person to person.

vincent van gogh is my BIGGEST inspiration in terms of color and composition! his unique style of brush work is what he's best known for, but i recommend looking at his works holistically too, and seeing where the eye is led and how he plays with light, color, and mood. if you want to go further, he was very inspired not only by prior impressionists, but also by japanese ukiyo-e artwork— try comparing "starry night" to "great wave off kanagawa" and seeing the similarities in the grand, sweeping movements they convey.

i'm sure i've said this a million times, but genndy tartakovsky has probably my favorite cartoonist style. it's at its peak in samurai jack— opinions are mixed about the narrative quality of season 5, but if nothing else, the art direction is absolutely jawdropping. one of my favorite scenes is the bit in the tomb, where jack is hiding in a sarcophagus, because the music and visuals are paying homage to a scene at the climax of "the good the bad and the ugly"!

in a totally different direction from those two... i'm a huge fan of gil elvgren's pinup girls! i've had a few different pinup calendars over the years, and at the end of the year, i like to cut up the pages individually for mini posters— i've covered pretty much all my available wall space in his illustrations. i love it when artists don't feel the need to sacrifice expressiveness for realism; his girls are SO DARN CUTE and they all look like they're having so much whimsical, cartoonish, flirty fun!

i'm also just very heavily inspired by 50s-60s print illustration... things like advertisements, "clip art" (which you had to physically clip out of a book and paste onto the page), and of course, tv cartoons. one big trend i love with that "googie" art style is how incredibly limited the palettes were, and how efficient the economy of line was. as much as i love the bold, blocky, dynamic shapes of styles like tartakovsky, who takes insp

also, please remember i'm entirely self taught and am NOT an expert, so just be aware of that if you see any weird stylistic choices in my work... i admire the work of a lot of professionally trained artists, but that doesn't mean i have any training or real right to go around teaching people stuff. i'm just some guy from a big crazy family full of artists, only some of whom went to school for it.

I finally got my hands on something I've been looking for (for a reasonable price) since I was just a lowly little level 12 hornball - A "Marvel Swimsuit Special!"

This is the second issue in the series (though the third book of its kind), and it was released in 1993 when... times were different.

The coolest thing about them (other than the totally radical '90s hunkeroos and baberinos in general) is the amount of really talented artists that submitted pieces - So many industry-leading folks putting their spin on the self-aware, low-brow, tongue-in-cheek project.

This first image was by Joe Jusko, a super popular cover artist at the time. I remember his Conan covers the most.

I'll eventually scan the whole thing in high quality, but for now, I'll take some preview pics to show you some of my favorite and/or goofiest pages:

Here is Domino, looking like we might need to race her to a Dermatology appointment. She's apparently tacky enough to wear a swimsuit with a domino print on it.

I've always had a thing for Silver Sable, and this page is just fantastic.

That being said, my favorite part is Sandman sitting there, looking like a dope, shaped like a sand castle. Which, while it seems silly, was probably the most challenging and detailed thing I've ever seen him do with his powers. Worth it for the shot, I suppose!

Ah, one of the more famous '90s Psylocke images that wasn't done by Jim Lee.

This centerfold was used in lots of comic store ads for several years after this issue came out. I remember seeing posters in the shops themselves. Trading cards of this picture are one of the most costly to collect.

It's beautiful, and the colors/lighting/shading are all fantastic.

Coloring by Paul Mounts, who did the coloring in hundreds and hundreds of just Marvel comics alone - I didn't mention that earlier because I was snickering at his name earlier in the She-Hulk feature. My bad.

Well, this wouldn't be Tumblr without a cat picture, yeah? Or a catgirl picture, I suppose.

This is the most adorable scene in the book. Just Tigra innocently taking a cuddle nap with some... um... wow, I don't know what the fuck those things are. Snuggle up anyway!

Huh. Of all the characters in this book, I really didn't expect to see Dr. Cooper... Either which way, the swimsuit under the detective get-up is pretty choice, honestly.

What's this? A parody ad that you'd more expect to see in an issue of "What The--?!" that only '80s kids will understand? Yup, totally.

This was in the back of the book and doesn't fit the theme at all, but it gets a mention because of the weird inclusion and also to stall time until I had the final image ready, because I needed time to prepare...

How could I not end this little "show and tell" without this beauty right here?

Here, we have remorseless killer Frank Castle flexing his best end-of-catwalk pose in front of a... wrestling match between a bunch of lady demon dinosaurs battling... for his affection? To tip him American cash? Or maybe all those hearts come from their love of beating each other up? I'm not here to judge.

And then there's a sign for 75 cent hotdogs, but it's been covered with another sign for... $20 tooth brushes? What in the shit is going on here?

There is one thing I do know, though. The artist wants you to think that The Punisher has at least $2.75 worth of hotdog under that massive crotch skull.

My after canon Andreil headcannons

Andrew can sleep just with a blanket but to be truly comfortable he needs to make himself a nest. He piles a blanket on a blanket, and tucks them tightly around himself. He is short enough that he can even twirl ends of a blanket both around his head and feet, if it's cold enough. Usually when he ends there is just a small opening for a part of his face.

It's warm, it's safe, Its comfortable. And Andrew is not getting out of his cocoon for anybody. Even for Neil.

Neil finds it funny. He goes to sleep, only to find, instead of his boyfriend, a big lump of blankets and pillows, with only a small tuf of blond hair  sticking out. He usually asks if he can go inside only to be met with stern, but muffled “No.”

He gets to be part of the nest only when he goes to sleep at the same time as Andrew and helps to build it and still not always, beacuse Andrew dont like how he destroy his perfect sleep creation, when he sneaks out in the morning to go for a run.

If andrew is angry at Neil he steal everything in house that can be used as blanket or pillow and incorporate it into his nest, leaving his boyfriend to sleep under jacket or something like that

Andrew refuses to admit to having even a small sentimental bone in his body, but when he and Neil went to visit Milport and talk with couch Hermandez he sneaked out and looked around if the raquet he hit Neil is still around somewhere. It was. (Of course it was, the team wouldn’t get enough funds to buy new equipment.) Andrew ends up stealing it.

Andrew has sensitive skin. Most of the time it manifests by him needing to use maximum sun protection not to end up red as lobster. But he also has to be really careful about what detergents he and Neil use to wash clothes. Nobody (except Cass) from his Foster Homes really cared about this so Andrew was used to just withstanding rash and itching without  a word. 

It was Nicky who first noticed this and by trials and errors managed to find one that was great. Neither of them ever said anything about it, but Andrew was silently grateful.

After he moved out to live on his own he realized The Right Detergent isn’t sold in his state so he called Nicky to ask if he knew any substitutes. It's a short conversation, ended with a small and quiet “Thank you” from Andrew. Nicky wisely let Andrew just disconnect but then spend hour crying to Eric how much “his kids grow up and how much he love them.”

Andrew gives their cats elaborate criminal backstories. Sir is a well known, widely wanted War Criminal hiding from her dishonorable actions against Mice Nation. King is a Jugoslovena Tax evader, running away from justice in the USA.

After Neil gets a camera, they make a agrement. One wall in their bedroom is entirely up to his use. He can pin there any photo he wants. (Usually Andrew photos.)

(There are times when on his way to bed Andrew stops and just looks silently at the wall of his faces. Not all showing happiness, some comfort, some trust. He looks at them and all is a little bit easier.)

There is a small exception. One small port of wall belongs to Andrew and the photos he chose to put there. The pictures he puts there? The worst possible pics of Kevin.

Unflattering profiles, half blurred ones that make him look like an eldritch horror, pics from nights of heavy drinking with Kevin passed out in weird positions.

It's almost a ceremony. Neil would print out the photo and silently present it to Andrew. He would examine it carefully. Close inspections, hard stares. If the photo wasn't enough Andrew would just tsk and hand it back to Neil. But if it's good, Andrew would take it to the Wall and compare it with others, systematically placing it in the right place.

His favorite (Placed in a way that it's almost the first thing you see when you look at the Wall.) is a pic of Kevin in the middle of the sneeze.

Andrew came out to the public after his agent annoyed him by non stop asking to make a Home Tour of his new house. (She is the only agent that managed to survive his antics. For example, after calling him 37 time in an hour and getting blocked, she procced to hunt down his favourite neighbor number, one that made fantastic chocolate cookies and always shared them with Andrew and asked her politely to tell Andrew to “fucking unblock me and do the House tour.”)

 He makes a live House tour to spite her and goes around his and Neil’s House in a bored voice telling things like “Kitchen... Room idk i never went inside  (it was gym.)... living room” he says as he shows on camera the living room and Neil watching some exy game.  The chat goes of course crazy and Andrew ignores it completely, answering only the most insane questions.

“Neil? This isn't about him, concentrate, we’re talking about how to secure your house in case it might become a crime scene. Hm now that i said it out loud it do seem to be related to him.”

He doesn't explain Neil being in his house at all until he reaches the bedroom and lets the camera concentrate on the wall over bed. “My photo wall, My  marriage certificate. My tax evader cat ruining my best pillow”

His agent almost cried from frustration.

we take HELLA pics of each other!! always using each other to test out cameras, settings, poses, backdrops, everything! when i pick up a new film camera i’ll come in beaming like “LETS SEE IF IT WORKSSSS” and then proceed to shoot an entire roll of film just of him. i’ve got a whole drawer of negatives and photographs of him that i shot to test cameras out, some are good and some are shitty but they’re alllll him. maybe some random animals here and there too :3

since my cameras aren’t digital, i can take pictures quite silently, so i take lots of candids of him. my favorites are mundane things; shots of him cooking for me in the kitchen with his shirt off or having coffee in the morning, shots of him sleeping :3 all sprawled out in the sheets with his mouth open n everything. luv.

shuji only got into analog when he met me, but he’s not a fan of the waiting period in getting the film developed. he likes to take lots of photos, quickly, and likes the guarantee that the things he set up don’t go to waste by a bad roll of film or something. he’s a digital user, and i have good hearing, so he struggles to take candids of me! so he’ll just try to get me to pose, but i’m awkward and clumsy and he giggles at me and tells me jokes to make me laugh and those are his favorite pics of me. he has nice posed ones of me that he uses in his professional portfolio but he covets the silly off guards that i hate. <3

he did a boudoir shoot of me once too, and has some of the pics printed on big metal frames that he displays in his closet 😭 he also keeps sexy lil polaroids in his wallet.

In a sense yes. But not in a 'I don't like or support him anymore' way. I understand his position in the industry as a closeted queer person inherently limits his choices and options.

But besides that, I am very angry that his team is more than happy to use us when it's convenient for promo, to sell stadiums and overcharge tickets. To sell shitty merch to. But then in the same breath use as scapegoats and throw us under the bus as hysterical Harry Styles fangirls who are jealous of his girlfriend. And then to have Harry in print on Rolling Stone allude to the same. THAT was a massive slap in the face. Especially because he had, up until that point, fervently DEFENDED not only his fans, but fans who are women. Fangirls who are brushed off as the butt of the joke and ridiculed at every turn. He had defended us. But then comes Olivia Wilde with her made up sob story of 'poor me, his unkind jealous fans bullied me online for no reason wah wah', and he allegedly commented in support of it, going against fans? Brushing off actual criticism as 'ridiculous jealous fangirls'.

Angel Sue, H, Harold, Harry....It's a complicated relationship. I absolutely hate that Harry is pissing me off. But he is. I still love him. I'm not gonna stop loving him. I still love his music and Fine Line is forever my lifetime favorite album. BUT I am allowed to love him and be super fucking pissed with him and call him out on his bullshit. If you truly love someone this is what you do. You're not a yes person. You actually give your input and true feelings.

And I will say that his approach and his team's approach of staying quiet thru this and "standing by" Olivia is really putting a terrible taste in my mouth. Their standard approach is always to not comment or say anything, then drop some cute pics/videos of H being his adorable self and expect fans to bend over, take it and forget why they were angry. But this isn't going away.

I mean they literally called us hysterical and in the same breath said that it doesn't matter what they do to our faces, we'll still buy movie tickets and line around the block, and drop our whole month salaries on LOT. That is incredibly insulting.

The nerve to shit on us but in the same breath tell us to buy movie tickets and drop thousands for love on tour tickets. THEY'RE BLATANTLY BOASTING ABOUT USING US TO OUR FACES!!! IT'S SO INSULTING.

So naturally, yeah I'm annoyed at him right now. But I am also aware that feelings are transient and I won't feel like this forever.

I just wish him and his team were a bit less afraid to stand their ground publicly on some instances.

Bro when they announced that Kyle Hebert was coming to Kon I literally jumoed out of my chair and started running around the house like a maniac. I was so fucking excited

When it came to the convention I awkwardly got in line, paid for 2 prints (my Mitsuo + a Kazuichi) and a photo and waited. When I went up I told him I loved him as Kazuichi (pretty sure he drew the heart on there because I said I find him handsome) and that his voice sounds wonderful no matter what role he's playing. After that I kind of geeked out on him - I said I was "the fucking biggest Mitsuo Kubo fan ever, I promise you." 😭 I didn't mean to be that intense about it but I was so excited, I just had to let him know that Mitsuo has fans. A couple. At LEAST one (Mitsuo mutuals I'd never forget about you I was just flipping out).

He signed my print and I gave him a little packet that had fanart by me, a note, and 2 of the Mitsuo charms (game + anime versions). He said I was the first person he's ever seen get excited about Mitsuo before. For some reason I felt really proud about that? 🥲💓 I yapped for a little while after about how I also recognized his voice as the creepy stalker in Persona 4 Dancing in the hopes of letting him know that no matter how minor the role, there are fans. We said our thank yous, then I turned around and literally ran to gush about what just happened to my friends who were waiting close by. Which means...

I ALMOST DIDN'T GET THIS PICTURE. I WAS SO EXCITED THAT I RAN AWAY IN EMBARSSSMENT AND FORGOT TO TAKE A PICTURE. Luckily my friend is a huge Gohan fan and went up to his booth to get an autograph shortly after I was done freaking out. It was only then did I realize that I paid for a picture. x'V I told his assistant that I didn't get a picture, they worked it out, and I shamefully went back up for a pic. 🥹 He was nice about it, I appreciate his patience.

Hanhan's Closet

(or, the best 7 dollars I have spent in a long time!)

I was engaged in one of my favorite relaxing pastimes - taking a bubble bath, sipping on a drink, and browsing Xianyu - when I happened across a listing for something I had never seen before:

The description was just "Han's Folding Closet", with no other details. The artwork caught my eye, as it is a distinctive style from a popular artist in the fandom. I could see Luffy, and a cute little towel-clothed Zhehan in the closet, and then another standee of Zhehan talking to Xiaoyu, who I recognized by his shark shirt. Super cute! I didn't know what was going on - was Xiaoyu lecturing Zhehan for letting Luffy eat his clothes? For walking around in a towel? Who knows? In it went into my cart. For 48 yuan, I figured I couldn't wrong.

The sale went through, and a week or two later, the standee showed up in my Superbuy warehouse.

I zoomed in to the warehouse photos, and saw some VERY pertinent details that I had failed to notice while drinking on the single small sales pic on Xianyu.

I was like, WAIT a second! there's only one beauty mark on the standee in the closet...that's not Zhehan, it's GONG JUN. And then I just started laughing. Luffy has Gong Jun's underwear. Junjun has two very visible hickeys, and some nervous sweat there in his hair. Nobody is getting dressed and sneaking out here!

Zhehan also has two hickeys! No wonder Xiaoyu is wondering who exactly is hiding in Zhehan's closet!

I have not laughed this hard in a long time. This whole concept is totally and completely obvious (like so obvious) once I was actually looking at it in detail, but I had gone in expecting it to just be a standee with some cute artwork of Zhehan. So the surprise of it being this slyly delightful Junzhe sendup just made it fantastic.

I was a little concerned it would get scratched up during shipping, so I had it wrapped up in a bubble wrap envelope, and mailed it out.

I got a couple extra surprises when I received this here at my house - one, that it was huge. Way bigger than I expected! I had thought originally it was just a cute small standee, but it's a full-on doll wardrobe stand.

The second was that, unfortunately, the bubble wrap envelope was insufficient to protect it from being placed on top of other items and getting bent during transport. So I have a slight crack at the top of the closet standee part. What a bummer! I glued it, and it seems to be no problem - the clothes-hanging integrity seems to be just fine.

Measurement wise, it's 16.5 inches (42 cm) long, 6 inches (15.5 cm) wide, and 8.5 inches (22 cm) tall.

Here's the right side. As you can see, the doors don't function or anything, it's just a single printed flat piece of acrylic.

Now let's take a look with actual clothes hanging up! Since this is Zhehan's closet, I put a few of his 20cm doll outfits inside. As you can see, there's plenty of room. If I wanted to hide Junjun a bit, even more room.

Hahaha! I can't stop laughing at it! It's so much fun! Due to the sheer size, I put it up on top of my fig display cabinet, and I will indeed keep clothes hanging on it.

I read Fighting Gravity on ao3 earlier this year and I wanted to tell you I loved it! I'm one of those peripheral members of fandoms who haven't read or watched any of the canon stuff, but are too obsessed with the fanworks to stop. It makes me wonder about stories like yours - is some point in the larger canon where something similar happens, or do you just come up with the idea for an unhoused Spock on your own?

I'm sending my ask to thank your for your story, but I also wanted to ask if you were alright with people printing and binding personal copies (ie. not for profit) of the fic for themselves.

I've been hand binding sketchbooks on and off for a little while, and I saw a tiktok of someone's self-bound versions of their favourite fics and thought that trying my hand at fic binding would be a fun project for this summer.

I just wanted to ask bc I heard some authors aren't okay with personal prints, so just let me know please; I'll always love the story regardless.

I'm sorry it took so long for me to reply - my laptop completely died several months back and the only one I could get online with is 11 years old, freezes up upon trying to load Tumblr, and is physically falling apart. -_- So I have been away from Tumblr all this time and did not see this until I got a new laptop tonight and could load the site again, I apologize! First of all - I consider it a great honor when anyone thinks enough of my fanstuff to want to do ANYTHING with it. =) I mean, I'm just out here being a nerd, writing fic about characters that are not mine. I can hardly be possessive about them. ;) So while I suppose it's rather late for a summer project, if for some reason the inclination strikes you in the future, feel free! It sounds like a beautiful project and I'm honestly flattered that you would think my story worthy. =) As for the inspiration behind that particular story... there is a rather silly story behind it. (tl;dr, possibly...) My partner-at-the-time and I were both really into the new Star Trek movie when it came out in 2009 - and this was not long after both of us were fixated on Ace Attorney fandom, which had recently had a new game released. Before the game was released, there was some character art showing an existing character looking scruffy, and the Ace Attorney fandom decided he must have fallen on hard times. There were multiple fanfics written about the guy he's usually shipped with finding him unhoused and taking him in and helping him get back on his feet. It became sort of a fandom injoke, "Miles adopts a homeless Phoenix". Not long after the first reboot Star Trek movie came out, the ONTD Star Trek community over at LiveJournal (good times!) dug up some screen test pics of Zachary Quinto wearing the Spock ears... but with a scruffy unshaven look and longer hair. So I showed them to my partner, who reacted with six little words:

"So... Jim adopts a homeless Vulcan?" I laughed because that was ridiculous and impossible given how some things work in the Star Trek canon. ...And then I started thinking about it, and how maybe it wasn't impossible, how someone *could* possibly wind up in such a situation in the Star Trek universe, and stopped laughing. ...And then spent the next several months of my life having this offhand joking comment turn into yet another exploration of one of my favorite themes: predestination vs. free will. OOPS. My partner, of course, was laughing their head off incredulously the whole time as I sent them drafts of the next chapter to read over and repeatedly reminded them that this was ALL THEIR FAULT. ;) So that is the...origin story... of that fic. Apologies for the length of this (and again, the lateness of the reply) - though to be honest it's so absurd it's fun to share it again. :D

I’ve seen a couple of people getting Polaroids of pictures with dan - how did you get that? did you like go to get your pic with dan printed somewhere? or do they give them out or something ? cool that yours is purple! also bonus question what was your favorite non spoilery but of the whole wad experience

I have an Instax camera! It works like an old school polaroid. I bought my film in Target so they sell them in most big box stores in the US, I assume it's the same in most countries. Dan's pretty familiar with them since I think at least one or two people show up with them at every show so he will take one of those with you and also a cell phone selfie! (Some of the films you can buy come with special printed frames, the one I was using that day was a rainbow pack and I really love the color it gave me!!)

Oh man... favorite non-spoilery thing about the show is just Dan, I think. Watching Dan. Like the physicality of him. I like watching how his body moves and having the head to toe view. I like seeing the little softness around his tummy and his arms and the way his shape has changed as he's gotten older. It made me wanna go home and write Phil cuddling him all soft and warm. (And I did exactly that.)

I am utterly delighted to have gotten two Anons about the exact same thing on the exact same day, and just after having talked about it with someone else over DM. Clearly, we all have shipping brain rot (and I blame Michael and David, because they are included in that. Haha) and I love it.

Let's get a few visuals up here, because David looked quite hot and lovely in that jacket:

That last picture is my personal favorite because it's incredibly easy to imagine Michael sitting there on the couch with that arm around him and David gazing at him adoringly (and if I were even slightly better at Photoshop, I might attempt an edit).

But yes, that jacket is clearly oversized on David, and that combined with the plaid print very much adds to the suggestion of it being Michael's. I keep thinking of articles of clothing that are described using the word "boyfriend"--boyfriend jeans, boyfriend shirts, and so on. In this case, it's a boyfriend jacket, and possibly quite literally, because we know Michael loves him some fleece-lined hoodies:

I also can't help thinking of Michael being in London just recently for the BAFTA Cymru event, and how that would've been the perfect time to give David that jacket as a gift. Maybe it even went some version of the way you mentioned, Anon #1, with Michael staying over in a hotel suite and David joining him and loving the jacket so much that Michael "gifted" it to him the morning after.

Maybe David put it on after taking a shower (with nothing underneath) and Michael became so turned on that he had David lie on the bed like that and touched himself (like in that scene from MoS) while they gazed at each other. Maybe they made love and David fell asleep after, still wrapped in the warmth of that jacket, and Michael just laid on his side watching him, heart aching at how peaceful David looked while he slept.

Day 31 "I'm Ready from Head to Toe"

Oh my, Teo was cute today.... and the bedtime chat.... my face is burning. No bedtime call today but I'm okay with that for once. He was very generous with selfies today. Oh, and did I mention the bedtime chat?

Waketime: The chat was considerable long. We were talking about the "Muse of Musical" and apparently Zen is going to be a judge on the show. Teo asked us if we know him. There's a paid option which let's us say he's our ex lol. I went for the other paid option though, which comes with a phone call (which is also about Zen, it was kind of sweet).

Then we were musing about how he might get famous and he needs to be careful of paparazzi which led to this tiny flirty banter.

Breakfast time: Basically talking about his upcoming schedule. Let me just share his selfie with you. I still prefer him with black hair but he looks really adorable here. He also got a new ear piercing! He didn't mention getting a new one though (just like his new hair color, it's just there).

Lunch time: Teo is out shopping and needs our help! I'm not sure if there will be variation depending on choices but I kind of doubt it as I got 4 outfits to comment on. You either say you like it or you don't. Our guy wants to look his best, so he also gets some facial masks.
