What are your thoughts on SL Gem? I’m genuinely interested to hear your take on her character.

So first off I haven't fully watched Gem's SL POV, nor do I feel totally confident talking about her in a traffic series sense since she's lacking screentime even more than Ren. So this one's gonna be less grain of salt and more. salt mines. do not take it seriously

Gem's character to me is defined by her bravado and natural affinity for leadership but also by her pseudo-crush on not Pearl, but Scarlet Pearl specifically.

I feel like I've made too many cynical jokes about gempearl being evil to me, I don't think they're like. Bad for eachother necessarily in fact incorporating HC into things they're one of the pairs in the series I personally headcanon as hanging out post-horrors (not necessarily in a fully fledged capital r Relationship just. they're hanging out).

But I do think there's something very fangirl-ish about the way Gem idolizes Scarlet Pearl and encourages Pearl to lean more into the character, when Scarlet Pearl has always been more of a coping mechanism. Like, whoa that thing you did to protect yourself and only made things worse is SO COOL. Which is both what is really genuinely awesome about gempearl and what is really scary about it. To me at least. Gem takes all the things Pearl hates about herself and thinks they're Awesome, Actually but doesn't understand why Pearl hates those things in the first place and how they hurt both her and the people around her.

It's all bookended really well too, since Gem despite all her efforts still ends up on the other end of Pearl's knife in the final episode and suddenly it's not so awesome anymore.

On the non-pearl-related side of things, Gem kinda lands in the same hunger games career-esque personality that I box people like Scott, Joel and Martyn into in that she's very much in her element in the death games (until she's not).

I've seen people say she reminds them of how the cast acted back in 3L and SL being her introductory season i.e. her having not quite yet experienced The Horrors would make that make a lot of sense. Especially when she takes death very lightly until her allies start permadying (e.g. her happily accepting Scott's sacrifice and even hitting him around for fun at one point and leading the zombie apocalypse task but being a mess when Scott asks her to kill him the last time). There's this great contrast with her being incredibly confident and capable yet very naive.

The misogynist in me wants to see her knocked down a few more pegs but at the same time she already kind of has. Idk I hope the asuka-coded behaviour rears full-blast next season instead of kind of being in the background. It would be awesome. character arcs and whatnot.

As for like. more miscellaneous headcanons. I think there's pretty much a bit of boy inside every girl but Gem especially I like to think over-performs aspects of femininity to "make up for" her uber-competitive personality. Everything she does is underlined with insecurity to me, apparently. She's also a lesbian.

i remember one time someone tried to frame hiyori as like, comphet lesbian, which like, that's fair as a headcanon but as proof they showed a checklist where hiyori checked off like less than half of them and it didn't even stand up to scrutiny (is her crush on asuka really an impossible and unattainable crush when she knows him and talks to him and tries to ask him out?) and i began to feel like it was more an attempt to shut down shipping her with guys

I'm not sure that Kaji is even aware of his having this status* 💀 unless you're referring to Asuka and Misato...in which case I don't think Misato is a lesbian and I don't think Kaji really cares enough about Asuka to pick up on the fact that she's a lesbian.

I finished Bloom Into You and liked it quite a bit more than I expected!

From the jump I thought this was going to be a show about a curious first-year’s hopeless crush on her overachieving senpai, and I turned out to be only half right. When it became clear that the power dynamics were flipped by ep2, I was hooked. 

I especially related to Koito’s hesitancy towards Nanami’s explicit desire. Because same-sex love stubbornly refuses to appear in mainstream media and popular standards of decorum, queerness is still somewhat of a learned behavior for a lot of folk. Exploring my own queerness still approaches a learning curve, and I greatly appreciate how this show demonstrates how difficult this can be for a developing mind. While Koito’s ambivalent feelings are certainly natural, they are in no way easy to understand with no one around to give her any guidance. 

I also found a lot of value in Nanami’s own self exploration. And while I do think there’s a bit of melodrama attached to her words (”You can’t love me because I hate myself, and I can’t love someone who likes something I hate” yeah are you sure you’re seventeen years old?), I at least appreciated how she attributes her own self-loathing to something other than queerness. There’s a whole lot of drama and internal struggle here, but a genuinely affirming aspect of this show is that no one seems to be ashamed of who they love. 

If there’s any place where this show lags for me, it’s in how the characters are presented. Much like a lot of same-sex pairings in similar romances, Nanami and Koito rarely seem believably gay. And I write that with a lot of hesitancy as someone who has never been a gay woman, but I think it’s fair to say that just about every side character in this show presents more typically lesbian traits than our leads. But considering how typical that is in anime (and how little I care about stuff like this anymore), it’s only a small complaint for an otherwise faithfully rendered queer story. 

While pretty, I’m not going to put this show’s visuals on the same level of something like Hibike (sidenote: this show does give some insight on what a Kumiko/Asuka ship would look like), nor am I going to rate the queer aspects of this show on the same level of something like Wandering Son. But it does just about everything well, especially the last few episodes, and I’m very happy to have experienced it. 8/10

Johnny (Loves women and is very vocal about it. While some of his past may lead Gearsters to believe he is straight, like his embarassment when finding out Bridget was a guy, this is because he realized he hit on a minor, not because Bridget is male. He has a very ambigious relationship with Testament. While they have come out as Nonbinary since, said relationship existed beforehand: Likely Bi. )

Axl (He misses Megumi his girlfriend, but is also fuckbuddies with Sol, so Bi.)

How do you watch Neon Genesis Evangelion and not think Asuka is the biggest repressed lesbian on the face of the earth? If you think that Manjoume actually had that much of a crush on Asuka and wasn't just making a big deal out of nothing because he couldn't deal with the realisation that he was crushing on both Asuka AND Fubuki... You can believe that, Valentineshipping is cool, but here's my take.

I like to think that Manjoume and Asuka came to an understanding after that initial duel and that they just played it up after that because they found it funny and considered it their inside joke and their brand of banter.

lorbo (favorite character, character I think about the most): it's surprising but I think it might be Rei. I think she had a fascinating character background and I would have loved to see more exploration on her internal thoughts (the little we got is very interesting) and I think it would have been lovely to see her grow up as a person instead of being used as a plot device

scrunkly (my “baby”, character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped): There's little "cute" in Evangelion, except for Pen Pen I guess... I had a crush on Maya (the short haired girl at NERV HQ) but it's 99% sure that she's canonically a lesbian soooooo

scrimblo bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave): I'm not sure if Kaji counts, but he should. I also like Toji and Kensuke and Toji's GF whose name I don't remember now, for what they were, they really just wanted to be normal teenagers, even more so than Shinji and the rest

glup shitto (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I won’t shut up about it for a week): Don't know if this counts, but I loved Jet Alone's episode, as well as some of the "filler" angels that didn't get too importance (like the fucked up sphere one or the ones that shut down NERV).

poor little meow meow (“problematic”/unpopular/controversial/otherwise pathetic fave): Shinji, and before you accuse me of anything, keep in mind that having empathy for Shinji is only common around here, about half the fandom still believes that SHINJI IS A PUSSY WHO DOESN'T WANT TO PILOT THE ROBOT AND GET ON WITH THE GIRLS... also he's the prototypical poor little meow meow
