I really like this russian edition of classic books. Letting famous artists do the covers in YA style was such a simple but clever decision. According to the recent study the number of teenage readers increased, possibly thanks to these covers. I own traditional classics with blank covers but if I ever see one of these in the wild, it’ll probably make me go feral.

While pinball-like games – i.e., glass-fronted inclined tables with bells, bumpers, and spring-loaded ball launchers – were developed in France as early as the mid 1700s, these examples were games of chance, lacking any mechanism for the player to manipulate the ball once it was in play. Initial experiments in introducing an element of player skill by adding flippers proved unsatisfactory, as even the most efficient mechanical flippers were too weak to propel the ball all the way up the table. Pinball would not realise its modern form until the 1940s, with the introduction of power-assisted flippers driven by small electric motors; this final step could in theory have taken place much earlier, the first commercially viable small electric motors having been developed in the 1880s, but economic factors made it impractical.

At this point, one may note that Bram Stoker's famous novel Dracula takes place around 1897.

Thus, permitting only slight anachronism, it is just barely historically possible for Count Dracula to have owned a pinball machine.

I don't think we give Jonathan Harker nearly enough credit for his absolutely unhinged choices. In 1897, that pathetic wet cat of a man was written with enough grit, willpower, and raw human stupidity to rival any of our modern horror podcast protagonists. When faced with a centuries-old vampire, in a coffin, drenched in fresh blood, he really thought the best thing to do was to hit it in the face WITH A SHOVEL. The audacity. The misplaced confidence. The sheer desperation. No plan. No hesitation. Running on fear and spite alone. And i fucking love him for it. Truly the character of all time.

Ok, so in the original Bram Stoker novel, sunlight is not lethal to Dracula. He just loses most of his powers. I'm bringing this up cuz I want a horror comedy where the hero, sensing dawn, tears off the curtains as a last-ditch effort only to have the vampire go "Aw shit, there goes most of my fancy powers. Guess I'll have to beat your ass the old-fashioned way" then proceeds to just deck the hero cuz a vampire at half-strength is still a fucking vampire.
