At some point "fanfic can be as good as professional writing" became "fanfic should be as good as professional writing" and that's caused major damage to fandom spaces.

I am actually begging some people to just let some spaces exist untouched by real-world issues and horrors.
Like I've lost count of the amount of times peaceful game or fandom servers have been ruined by people stampeding in with political rants, bitching about world issues, demanding internal activism, demanding vent channels so they can whine about their shitty parents, ect.
Like. Respectfully. Not every single space has to be inclusive of and welcoming of outside topics. The real world sucks. We don't needed to be reminded of that absolutely everywhere.

“ships should at least make sense.” no. ships can make sense, sure. but they’re just fictional characters we play with for fun. they’re fantasies, not a fucking thesis paper. so no, they don’t always have to make sense. they just have to make you happy (or horny).
let people enjoy (fictional) things however they want to enjoy.

"This is some gay shit" Good. Silly. Fair enough. Doesn't inherently invalidate other interpretations of the relationship. Honestly yeah, it is kind of gay regardless of their canonical relationship status
"There's literally no platonic explanation for th-" WRONG!! KILLING YOU WITH AMATANORMATIVITY KILLING LOBSTERS 🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞
#i like a good ship as much as the next guy. in fact im mostly a shipper but good lord this phrase pisses me off sometimes#especially when its a relationship that canonically is explicitly platonic to highlight the importance of platonic relationships. COUGH#malevolent#COUGH. <- i ship private eyes. i dont have an issue with it. i think its just when people phrase like that specifically that its a bit HHHH#uhm uhm uhhhh. slips.#jayvik#WOAH. how did that get there (obligatory: i literally ship them. again its just.. the phrasings kind of insanely dismissive of friendships)#amatanormativity#fandom critical#fandom discourse#txt#johnlock#<- AS IN LITERATURE. LIKE. LIKE NOT BBC SPECIFIC (BECAUSE THAT WAS A QUEERBAIT I'M AFRAID)#sashannarcy#<- theyre like. in a polycule to me but that doesnt mean their canonical friendship isnt worth celebrating#dare i say#bnha#mha#rwby#<- I SHIP BUMBLEBY THIS IS NOT ABOUT THEM#lord of the rings#<- again not the ships specifically thats the issue but its just the implication that a romantic reading is like inherently superior#to a platonic one#this isnt even a critique of shipping. i think shippings fine as long as youre willing to acknowledge its not inherently canon (and doesn't#have to be) and dont invalidate or devalue non romantic interpretations

When I tell you that I have read fanfic characterizations so OOC that they'd classify as an original character, trust me I have read THOUSANDS. But you know what I don't do? :) Tell the author of those fanfics that they might as well classify that character as an original character if they're going to write them like one. Because that's fucking rude. People don't owe you your preferred characterizations. The back button is free.
#fanfiction#ao3#archive of our own#fandom#dont mind me im getting mad at something old again#saw a comment while browsing that reminded me of some lncemond discourse awhile back and got pissed off all over again lmao#also needed this as a reminder for myself tbh#i be getting too frustrated with my hp fics sometimes when it is literally not that serious#say it with me:#MY OPINION IS NOT FACT#ACTING ENTITLED IS NEVER CUTE#AND I'M GROWN ENOUGH TO CURATE MY OWN EXPERIENCE WITHOUT DISPARAGING OTHER ARTISTS#💕💕💕

as i grow older and age in fandom especially, i have waning patience for 2012 style fandom wars. i don't have time for the type of person who goes "why is this the 2nd top ship on ao3 when it bugs me", i don't have the energy to be friends with people who go "i specifically expressed dislike for this ship and people still write it?" and i have absolutely no time for someone who goes "this very personal trauma i have projected onto this random character and ship should be recognized and agreed by everyone else, otherwise they're bad people"
#idk man im just tired#ao3#fandom#i recognise that there is an age to have this type of discourse poison your brain and i have all the sympathy i can if you're going through#it but at the same time i don't have the patience for it sorry#it's one of the main reasons why fandom has become a chore for me#meow speaks

man i dont want to get all "fandom elder" on people because i think its cringe when people talk about the "good old days" of shipping culture and then ignore the rampant misogyny, queerphobia and racism in those communities but i gotta say: why are people so weird about shipping now?
Like there's really bizarre things i keep seeing younger/newer people in fandoms get upset over. like the obsession with only shipping canon couples. getting upset over crackships. viewing two characters as siblings (who arent considered siblings in the narrative) and getting mad when people ship them. If you get a relationship slightly off people will right a massive thesis statement about it flat out harass you over it. people have to put "not a ship" under platonic art because shippers will blow a fuse if they read it as slightly romantic. pick me queer people getting pissed off when people ship two characters of the same gender and accusing them of "not appreciating platonic relationships" (which by the way, funny to me that this is only thrown at m/m ships and never f/f ships).
Like shipping culture is supposed to be fun, what are we doing here.
#txt#like it was something that crossed my mind in the dandadan fandom#this is a ROMANTIC SERIES and people are getting mad over non-canon ships?? what!?#Edit: please yall this is not about proship vs anti ship discourse

Now that gravityfalls is trending,, I want to say something that most of you will agree to
NEVER trust ANYONES opinion on the show if they hate Mabel,, the whole point of the series is that Dipper and her are close and should STAY close and that drifting them apart would do no good to the entire universe.
She is not a jerk or a bitch,, she's twelve and a sweetheart and YOU are crazy for hating her

no you have to contribute to your fandom if you don't want it to die. most fandoms die because people say 'it's so sad watching the fandom die when the hype dies' without doing anything about it. I'm not saying you have to push out 100k word slow-burn fic, I'm not saying you have to make fan art or gif sets or edits or anything. I'm just saying we as a community should contribute to our fandom if we don't want it to die, and by contributing, I'm talking about giving kudos, commenting on your favorite fics, reblogging your favorite art and just talking about your favorite characters. that's enough to keep a fandom alive. that's the most effective way to keep a fandom alive in my humble opinion.
fandoms die because people stop talking about it, fandoms die because people stop engaging with fan content once the hype is gone. what I'm saying is, mainstream media's hype may be gone, but our fandom can stay alive and thriving if us as a community don't let it die.

shaming and making fun of people for still engaging in fandom activities once they reach a certain age is so embarrassing because why are you giving yourself an expiration date of time you have fun? why are you not-so-indirectly saying you will stop having fun once you reach a certain age? or do you really believe you have to stop engaging in fandom activities and having fun once you turn (x)? do you not think you will, what, live that long and turn that age too? do you think fun will suddenly stop for you and life will all of a sudden lose its meaning once you reach a certain age? how sad to be giving yourself an hourglass and just waiting for your time of having fun to run out.
adults can and should engage in fandom activities if it's what makes them happy.
adults can and should continue doing whatever they like doing as teenagers if it's what makes them happy.
age is just... part of life. it's a part of me and it's a part of you. shaming people for something you will have to go through (unless you don't think you will live that long) is such a loser behavior. indirectly saying you will stop having fun once you reach a certain age isn't the flex you think it is. it doesn't make you look "cool and edgy", it makes you look miserable.
