hello! i think your ella fue piece is gorgeous and i'd love to hear more about your inspo for it / the story behind it!
omg thank you so much... WHAT A NICE QUESTION?!
Tumblr media
this is the piece for clarity's sake. i remember painting this piece in like 1-2 days and searching around for hours for inspo because i wanted to draw more environments in south america. i got caught up in a rio rabbithole and mashed a bunch of references together. of course there's a sapphic thing going on here. wanted to capture an earnest moment of seeing another girl walking by also holding a coconut. LMFAO.
also during that time (and now, still) i was becoming completely obsessed with fania all-stars and played their song "ella fue" over and over while drawing this. I FUCKING LOVE FANIA ALL-STARS. obviously they're not brasilian but the song is so beautifully performed and can be interpreted as many things because of the vagueness of the lyrics... was she the one, past tense? is she no longer the one? or is it a sort of act of narration as we, the listeners, are taken by the hand to peer at a moment in time where someone realized She was the one! like we're watching a movie? i feel more of the latter. the song feels like the beach when it's uncomfortably hot. a seemingly lighthearted but intense passion. y'know? similarly in my painting i wanted it to be up to interpretation. will the girl simply keep walking after looking, or will they speak and become friends. or something... more? LOL. need to draw more gay people on the beach in south america i think

Sandhill Cranes (Antigone canadensis), mother with "colt", family Gruidae, order Gruiformes, found over much of North America
Crane chicks are sometimes referred to as “colts”.
Sandhill Cranes breed in the far north of North America, and overwinter in the southern US and northern Mexico.
There are small separate southerly breeding populations in Mississippi, Florida, and Cuba, as well.

i decided all plays are time loops btw. it’s true because they keep getting performed over and over and over and the ending never changes and they can never escape it. if you even care.

I MADE A GAME! it's a short little walkaround adaptation of Sophocles' Antigone, set in a dying apartment tower, with a whole host of characters who you may or may not recognize. Music, art, and writing all by me - you can play it here, either in-browser or downloadable (although I've been informed that if you download it, the fonts may not function correctly).
It may receive updates in future - I made it in about a month for a class assignment, so I didn't have time to include everything I wanted to, and the music is all taken from various other projects of mine - so stay tuned for whenever that happens! For now, enjoy a 30-40 minute game with a single, inevitable conclusion. And do let me know what you think.

Tragedy enjoyers when characters haunt the narrative, when nothing can be done to save them, when small moments of respite and happiness only serve to send them closer to their inevitable end

Sorry, but we’re burying your girlfriend alive. Yeah, she decided that the laws of Zeus take precedence over the laws of the state. Your father’s trapping her in a cave in punishment for giving her brother a burial. I mean, you can try to talk him out of it, but good luck. So sorry.

thinking about an ASL performance of oedipus rex where the reveal of oedipus's fulfillment of the prophecy isolates him from thebes not just because of the social taboo of killing your father and having a relationship with your mother, but also because it leads to him blinding himself and therefore losing the ability to communicate with those around him

i've come to realize there are only two kinds of tragedies: preventable and inevitable. preventable tragedies are the kind where everything could have maybe worked out if only. if only romeo had gotten the second letter. if only juliet had woken up earlier. if only creon had changed his mind about antigone sooner. if only orpheus hadn't turned around.
inevitable tragedies are the kind where everything was always going to end terribly. of course macbeth gets deposed, he murdered his way to the throne. of course oedipus goes mad, he married his own mother. of course achilles dies in the war, he had to fulfill the prophecy in order to avenge his lover.
both kinds have their merits. the first is more emotionally impactful, letting the audience cling to hope until the very end, when it's snatched away all at once leaving nothing but a void. the second is more thematically resonant, tracking an inherent fatal flaw in its hero to a natural and understandable conclusion, making it abundantly clear why everything has to happen the way it does.

There is something about classic literature that hits different - which is not to say that modern literature lacks depth - there is just something so incredible about reading something and knowing that these same words were consumed by people decades, centuries before you took your first breath. And they loved and felt the stories the way you do& despite all the time separating you you’re still connected…
