In a lot anime you see women commenting on each other's bust size and being jealous of the characters with the biggest sets. Is that just "Men Writing Women" is that something that can happen? It's seems like the former.

It is absolute a "men writing woman" thing. Especially in anime because Japan has this weird focus on women's "3 measurements" (bust, waist, hips). To the point some character bios will literally just list female characters' "measurements" which is fucking weird. I'm sorry, I don't care if it's a cultural thing. It's weird.

That being said as a teenaged girl we definitely did compare bust sizes growing up. But we were like.... 13.

idk if it's also a Japanese thing because generally Asian women tend to have smaller busts so there's a bigger emphasis on it being "big" or not but I'm not Asian and I did not grow up in an Asian society so I really can't comment on that. I can do my best to guess but really, it's not really something for me to speculate over.

and also because to me, as a black person, it feels really weird that it just sidelines Ezran, they always just kill him off for no reason except to put the white person in a position of power

Its okay as a concept, i suppose, say Ezran feels like he can’t bear the responsibility at his age, so Callum takes up the mantle, but it just feels Weird to me, and maybe I’m reaching but it does feel like there’s a hint of racism going on even if its not exactly the author’s intention

So back in like 2020 in the months following S3, Regent Amaya became a popular headcanon in the Janaya corner of the fandom (because they wanted to have to interact Politically with Janai rather than just personally? I don't know) and it never sat right with me for similar reasons. (Cue people complaining in S4 that Janay's plotline was more Janai centric than Amaya centric. Mmhm.)

Because here's the thing (and I've said this before) while Callum is not white (he is mixed, he's half Asian and half white) he is lighter skinned than his brother and I do understand why people think he's white at first glance (more discussion/perspectives on Callum's race in this tag) and Ezran very clearly is not, and it's also very clear how that can affect them sometimes fandom wise. Of the five like main Main characters (although that list is 100% expanding in S4), Ezran is one of two main characters of colour (bonus core protagonist points alongside his brother) and he is the only darker skinned character of colour, comparatively in the trio.

There are other reasons I think as well about why Ezran doesn't have as much fandom made about him (he's the youngest in the cast, most of the fandom is older; he's not part of a main ship, etc) but race absolutely affects a lot of the critique he (and Harrow) get as kings. I have seen people with their full chest go "I hate TDP's monarchy, they're such bad kings Viren was right" because their issue isn't at its core the monarchy, it's that their white fave's bloodline wasn't the one on the throne for once.

Also talking about race is never discoursey IMO so always feel free to drop stuff in my inbox about it. (I'll happily take getting yelled at for it, it's way easier to bear as a white person & it doesn't happen as often as a result.)

Since 2016, we've seen this mini trend of casts having one Black character, usually a boy who's a best friend of the protagonist, get routinely sidelined. Lucas had to carry Stranger Things on his back (although I think it's gotten better? Idk for sure I stopped watching the show after s2 for unrelated reasons), Finn from Star Wars deserved so much better (and I left the SW fandom bc the racism was so bad and he was my favourite after just six months), Bow from She-Ra got virtually nothing, and Gus from The Owl House actually did.

TDP, thankfully, does not fall into that trend (having more than like 1-2 Black characters in general also helps a great deal, JC) and I now no longer watch every season like a hawk to ensure that it won't, because I trust that it won't.

So. King Callum AUs. The first thing is that you're right, Callum isn't that interested in politics. While he has a mind for politics (he immediately realizes what the egg could mean globally) he's not motivated by them. In 1x06 he gets pissed & fed up because Rayla insists on giving him only the political reasonings for why she's travelling with them and not stealing the egg, and it's not enough (he wants the personal reasons). His Tales of Xadia bio reaffirms this, stating outright that he's "beholden to [his] inner circle, not some silly kingdom" in spite of being Crown Prince. I think in some ways if Callum was left alone as King, regent Amaya would be more likely, not less, even if Callum might resist out of a grief fuelled desperate "I have to do this" at first. Being King is genuinely liberating for Ezran in ways it'll just never be for his brother, thematically / personality wise

And Callum being king because Ezran died is, IMO, unnecessary and actually more restrictive for both of their characters. If you want Callum grieving but away from the throne off adventuring with Rayla in an angsty AU, you can just have him think Ez is dead and achieve the same aims. If you want Callum on the throne, you can just have him do it out of love/loyalty for his baby brother. Otherwise, Ezran actually being dead leaves Callum solely grieving and stranded away from magic (his true calling, or the temptation of dark magic). But if Callum becomes regent to try and shield his baby brother, it leaves a lot more for them to grow, disagree on and develop, etc. Just a lot more avenues. How I think this would go (honouring Ezran's role to play and how I think their dynamic would realistically develop with this addition) here.

Being aware of what does or doesn't displace a character can be tricky, but I always think of it in regards to "do you take something another character has earned and give it to another character with little consequence," killing a character off when it wouldn't change that much to keep them alive and just tweak other things (like the above), or "are you taking the challenge one character has set before them and giving it unequivocally to another".

For example I've thought about "is my theory of Callum sacrificing/handing over the Key of Aaravos for Rayla's life displacing him" but it's not, in my eyes, bc 1) all the repercussions that come from that action is still something he has to deal with, 2) he'd have a vested interest and arc in reclaiming the cube, 3) it highlights the tragedy of Callum regaining his agency from brainwashing and still being forced into Aaravos' tragedy, 4) still leaves Callum perfectly free and motivated to uncover the secrets of the key himself beforehand, it just won't end well for him. And if Callum was having big conflicts with Ezran RN, I'd probably swap in Ez as a possibility for who he'd hand the key over for too

Last but not least I do wonder if Callum will even remain his brother's High Mage. The symbolism of a brother on either side of the Border has always felt fitting to me, and I think Claudia would make a great high mage to Ez if/when she gets redeemed / she'll want to stick close to her brother. Now that Callum has Ibis' staff, I wonder if that'll also eventually include having Ibis' post, especially now that Soren has stepped up in S4 to really be Ez's protector (and Cal and Ez would still write letters all the time, of course <3 Ez checking in on him through his link with Zym).

But yeah I think if Callum did continue to be in a political role beyond high mage, he'd be best suited to be one of Ezran's top generals, and that would take its own interesting toll on Ezran's psyche

Anyway this is probs longer than you were expecting but thank you for sharing your perspective! It's something I think the bulk of the fandom has noticed and it's always good to look at areas of like, perhaps more casual than outright racism when it comes to characters of colour, and how we have a responsiblity to examine those areas when exploring things, even just in fanon

Okay so this ask may be a bit weird but sometimes when I see fans and the way they speak about their biases, I get the feeling like "If you became a mom at this very second, I think I know what kind of mom you'd be".

Like I'm from an Asian household so I don't know if you've experienced this but whenever people start comparing the different members achievements, it gives me flashbacks to my mom comparing my scores to my academically brilliant cousin. Or when I see so called company antis they definitely give me 'parent who sends non stop emails to teachers about the treatment of their kid' energy. The ones super focused on streams and achievements give me vibes of parents who hope to send their kids to ivy's. And of course the chill ones who are just happy with whatever their biases / kids would do. Just a strange thought I had.

I haven't had the chance to check the podcast out personally so far but from what I've seen on tumblr it seems to take a much less vague approach to those themes than even Unburied did, and considering how multiple people mentioned that the podcast seems a bit rushed, do you think that affected the handling of this too?

one of the things I did really like was removing any ambiguity as to whether or not we're supposed to interpret this version of the Riddler as a Muslim Indian man, and I think it's fair to assume that by extension that this cements Bruce and Barbara as Black and Latina, respectively. I don't think any of those were really controversial opinions, especially per the fandom I see on our glorious hellsite, but the conformation is cool!

I think exploring the way that Eddie's status as a brown man would contribute to his sense of disenfranchisement and resentment for Society is interesting for sure. it's also used to enable some like... COMPELLING bastard behavior that's very specific to him as a man of color, namely misleading the GCPD to arrest some entirely unrelated Indian man that they can't tell apart from Eddie, and the bit where he's having his little tantrum re: his sister's social climbing and insinuates that she probably has a white husband/boyfriend, which is a thing Asian women are FREQUENTLY attacked for in Asian incel communities. interesting move, I applaud.

I was less impressed by how the series handled its humanization of criminals and incarcerated individuals, which I wrote about a lot on this post about the depiction of Azrael. idk, I like that the rogues look out for each other and we get to see the horrors of realizing that you're so dehumanized by society that your vicious murder becomes a meme, that's a perspective on Gotham's rogues that I feel we don't get a lot! but the series seemed to waffle pretty hard on its own stance on this, Batman seems to be operating a pretty different wavelength than he was at the end of Unburied (he's soooo much more of a cop), and I also genuinely don't know what to do with the reveal that this version of King Tut was running a sex cult, especially since literally the only person who criticized him for that was. you know. also responsible for several brutal murders.

at risk of harping on this too much it feels very strange that a series would be so invested in the humanity of villains and then also have an actual antagonist who's as one note as Azrael is made out to be and gets offed with so little fanfare. the series' other big issue seems to be coming down hard on the side of "we hate violent Christian fundamentalists, they're Bad" and like. yeah, I agree, and that obviously ties in very closely with exploring racism and Islamaphobia that the Riddler has grown up experiencing, but as I said in the other post it's also uuuuuh very weird to make Jean-Paul the narrative scapegoat for far right fundie Christians when, in the comics, that's not his bag at all. he's a dangerous and careless Batman, sure, but he's also very much a victim of the Order of St. Dumas, and it feels like both a sloppy use of the character and a WILDLY missed opportunity to explore the church as a corrupt system akin to Strange's medical abuses in Arkham and everything about the GCPD. idk, it feels like Secrets in the Dark just really jettisoned much more interesting potential stories building on Unburied's themes in favor of a much more black and white narrative.

tl;dr I cannot believe that Secrets in the Dark has forced me to point to David S. Goyer as a comparative paragon of nuance and taste!!! what!!!

I'm still very much in need of help!! I just saw you reblogued my post about questioning my sexuality. I've known I was asexual since forever, I'm part of the people who find sex uncomfortable to the max and to the point that I prefer (most) asian and middle east dramas/films because of how little they show compared to American/European. Now, the part of me I'm still figuring out is whether I'm pan or aro... I sometimes find people so fascinating that I find myself wanting to learn more about them, take them out to be able to have convos, just me and them, but I never find myself wanting more... even if they're absolutely stunning and smart to the point that I do think, "Damn, they're attractive." I've never wanted to kiss anyone, I'd rather not be kissed, too. I don't ever want to go home to someone, I enjoy my alone time the most. And I know from seeing couples that there is more to it than kissing and all that, but acts such as hugs or holding hands are not something I consider intimate and I don't feel all slimy or weird if it does happen with those people. For all of that, I think of myself as more aro, but the fact that I regularly can run into people and find them to be absolutely stunning is the reason why I'm questioning myself the most... Idk if you could say that I just appreciate beautiful/responsible/smart people since I've never felt anything big for them except thinking to myself "the way they carry themselves/handled that was attractive" or if I'm something idk like an identity I'm not aware of. ugh now im thinking about how the new show like ... sort of removed clawdeen's blackness. like i'm glad she's still not white, oh my god i would have lost my mind. but at the same time it feels like a weird choice to change her as dramatically as they did. like draculaura is still miss perfect while being an absolute sweetheart; and frankie is still a newbie who's prone to mess ups. but clawdeen is....not clawdeen??? She's not miss fashionista with a bite who's a protective big sister anymore. it just feels ... weird. idk. (also the whole thing where in reboots the black characters suddenly become biracial feels weird in a way i don't know how to explain.) i'm not black so like, idk if this is just me comparing new clawdeen to old clawdeen & therefore i am only noticing the lack of 'blackcent'; but then there's also the fact that her g3 doll is lighter skinned than g1, g1 cgi animation is darker than g3 cgi animation; and box art g1 is darker than g3 box art, and her hair is lighter color. Also if they end up making her and deuce a thing then they're actively ignoring that the creator basically said she's a lesbian; and that's....something.

also, the way that draculaura is biracial is sort of weird if only because it constantly feels forced. Dracula was romanian. and original draculaura was romanian. and now she's asian. it just feels like a strange choice? Espically when there are plenty of other characters with unspecified backgrounds / uncertain backgrounds (twyla, Ghoulia, Toralei, spectra, Purrsephone and Meowlody, etc). but espically removing any hint of an accent from draculaura & making her dracula's bio daughter feel like the weirdest choices. It's like, completely removing the entire point of her character. She was prosecuted, a plague survivor, and they got rid of that. I hope they at least like, say she's half-romanian and half-asian. That would honestly satisfy me that way; but it doesn't look like they will.

I like the choice to change lagoona from austrailian into latina as a nod to the creature from the black lagoon which was in the amazon rainforest. It's a neat nod. I do wish we had another austrailian character though just to fill that hole. maybe they'll do it with gil? idk i miss gil lol

anyway, my tl;dr is that some choices make sense. other parts just feel....weirdly forced. and im tired lol

Well first, the person who asked me the question dmed me and was very nice about it, so I don't believe they asked out of the fact they're Korean or kpop idols, but more so because they are attracted to them. So let's not make that assumption or accuse them of fetishizing them because that's a strong accusation. Yeah there is kpop fans who are racist and fetishize Asian people but that is a large fanbase we're talking about, not everyone is like that.

Korean women themselves have said that majority of Korean men do date foriegners with the intention to have sex. So it's just a matter of being careful.

Stray Kids have done things that were problematic, so if that is how you feel you are entirely entitled to that opinion. I do believe they are learning from their mistakes and are trying to be better people. I also want to mention that these are readings for entertainment and not to be meant to slander their character, so take whatever resonates leave what doesn't.

not that anyone asked, but for clarity and curiosity i looked at the list of NPC names for Thavnairians since i came across some people's muses who were cited as being Thavnairian, but... the naming conventions didn't really reflect the suggestion the game is making about the culture.

for reference, i'm a punjabi and punjab has kind of always been the inbetweeny space where islamic western asian and hindu southern asian sensibilities cross with one another

anyway anyone who knows me knows that i have compared the current state of thavnair to mughal india - the era where persian and islamic influenced mongol descended rulers governed the largely hindu populated india (you know the 'stans'? india calls itself 'hindustan' when invoking the Old Days and 'bharat' when invoking the current day)

so then i came across some characters who were non-gaja original characters with hindu names. so... that was weird, because it's heavily implied that the non-gaja characters have persian inspired names. and their wardrobes and their boats are all persian inspired?

so tidbit about last names in the hindu tradition: they describe what caste you belong to. caste, as a concept = very bigoted, we should very be against it, people have died b/c of caste based bias. definitely avoid using brahmin names if your character is... idk, not nobility, some kind of high priesthood, or like, absurdly wealthy. but that isn't going to matter in a moment.

b/c the only races with actual hindu names are the gaja and the ananta. the gaja appear to be more south indian in culture whereas the ananta are more north indian (hi again). that's if we make an exception for the gaja in treasure dungeons with thai cultural connections all over the place.

all other thavnairian anthropomorphic NPCs are given persian or arabic sounding names. i wonder if they're different because they were transliterated from the japanese pronunciation of real names, though it could easily be that they're just making them Different Enough. though, i will say, the word "akasha" got that treatment, so i wouldn't be surprised if it all did. it would make a lot of sense.

so yeah... au ra, midlanders and highlanders seem to have that western asian naming vibe going on for them. as far as i'm concerned, it would be more interesting to take meaningful names from those regions of the world to support world building in that direction. because otherwise you end up perpetuating the notion that it's one big hodgepodge monolith with funny sounding names. but, well... go with god, my child. i'm going to fade into to dust at any minu

Been pondering Ranjit's pointlessness in the story and Vauthry's desperately needed redesign

Vauthry needs to be attractive. The "perfect ideal king" (almost like the first's Z-nos mayhaps? Blonde and thin and spoiled rotten yet mistreated by their parents in that Classique noble family story way)

He also just needs a way more fucked up lightwarden design. Like maybe completely malnourished looking (literally just a spine and rib cage torso) to show how starved for a good, happy life and actual love he was. Also multiple sets of wings cause that's cool. Maybe a halo that covers the eyes to show how he was blinded by his "divine destiny"

Ares recommended the name ego to fit with the theme of love names some of the wardens have.

Not really sure what to do with Ranjit. Minfilia's warden is such an important thing to work with (that SE totally dropped the ball on) but the weird choice to have a vaguely Asian monk be the Evil Warden for a kidnapped white girl is....no.

But I think some kind of like. Human knight who's clearly only surviving their injuries because they're a high ranking sin eater created by Vauthry would be cool. And then have them replace the Consort as the final boss of Mt. Gulg

But also just have more of a story for Minifilia and Ryne ffs!! Let her talk about her trauma and confront Thancred on his warden style parenting (instead of having him manpain his way into redemption)

Anyway. Some kind of classic holy knight in armor design but with really obvious fucked up things underneath. Like in the fight with Thancred before Il Mheg have Thancred hit them hard enough to break their neck and spin their head around. And they recover and readjust their head. Some kind of fucked up sin eater monster pervasion of light body horror you know?

Ares also suggested some kind of like. Corruption within Thancred that he has to battle. To represent overcoming his desire to control Minifilia (because letting Minfilia do her own thing and go out of his sight is what led to her death) as a form of protection vs growing as a person and understanding things and people are out of his control and all he can do is fight for who/what he loves.

Idk maybe in that confrontation in the temple in the raktika woods (sp?) The holy knight is "killed" but stabs Thancred and infects him and hes forced to confront his feelings and the horror living in him that bursts out during the trip to meeting Ryne

I wanted to go ask a question during office hours and there was another student there asking questions about our presentation. You know completely different from homework questions. This kid I was with kept insisting we interrupt the other student to go sit down. Like i feel it’d be different if the other student was asking about homework but no they were talking about their project and he kept insisting let’s go inside. Bro as it is she is shy y would we make her uncomfortable by going inside and making her feel rushed.

Idk their white privilege is always present. Like it’s glaring and annoying. I have never hung out with legit ethnically Caucasian people before like back home yeah I know them say hi be friendly but like truly getting to know them is different. Like everytime he speaks I’m left like ok. Sometimes I’m talking to another student about something say clothes and he’ll join the conversation but just doesn’t think to try and continue it because they’ll center themselves and then change topic. Like we talking about theme parks and I wanted to ask another kid how was Disney Shanghai cuz he said he went. Why he just completely change topics to class work just to end the conversation. It be pissing me off cuz I’m like first I want to know more about the students in surrounded by. The foreign students are often quiet but like I want know more about where u from, what u do, how’s life back home, u miss it. All these things and he’ll center himself. Like ok it’s cool u have/ do that but let’s ask them too. Are u not interested in learning more about the other students, learning more about anything. Then he make weird backhanded comments. Like “idk why these kids are always late like…?” Boy if u don’t mind ur fucking business. Buying from Starbucks too like ugh.

Anyway it just bugged me today cuz I’m like why do u enjoy being the center of attention so much. Also there was a conference in a western Asian countries like by Kazakhstan we in the US mind u, he goes I wouldn’t be able to go I’m gay. Bro u can easily hide u gayness one and two ur white and u would be at an international conference i don’t think they’re gonna fucking shoot u on site.
