the reason we like characters like Evan is because theres more to their story than surface level if you actually look. he was born into it so its not like its guaranteed that he actually wanted to do it. i see him as being a victim of circumstance.

lily on the other hand ignored her best friend getting bullied because he was mean to her one day and then ended up DATING the bully... make it make sense. she's not a saint

I'm going to brush over you sympathizing with a character that has nothing but a name and a kill count on their wiki to address the blatant misinformation about Lily here.

Lily didn't ignore Snape getting bullied. She stood up for him. And, you know what, she had no obligation to. Not after what he did.

She only did so because she was a good person, period.

When Lily tried to intervene and Snape called her a mudblood, James was furious. He stood up for her, demanding Snape apologize, yet still Lily was mad at James and shouted at him for it.

Because she knew that James had an unfair advantage over Snape and, even upset, wasn't willing to add fuel to the fire.

Lily chose to walk away. She didn't have to do that. If she wanted James because he was a bully, then she would've let him force an apology out of Snape. But she didn't.

James was a good kid who made bad decisions. You could say the same for Snape. Lily saw the good in both of them. That doesn't make her a saint - it makes her kind.

What would you say are your more controversial opinions about the hp characters?

ohhhh okayyy. i feel like my opinions on a lot of the characters aren’t controversial because i dont feel super strongly towards anyone in any negative light but here are some i could think of at the top of my head:

i’m glad the malfoys faced more extreme backlash after the second wizarding war. a lot of people in the fandom seem to be very sympathetic towards draco and scorpius for getting dogpiled with the brunt of it (which yeah, it sucks, especially for scorpius) but the prejudice makes complete make sense to me. if i was someone who didn’t know scorpius’ character, and had someone from my family get killed in the second war due to death eaters or something— seeing the malfoys still be wealthy and walk around freely without any jailtime, i would be bitter too. they’re hated on but they’re still one of the richest families ever, so they’ll live LOL

another anon has asked about this and i haven’t responded to them yet but when i do i will link it here for my reasons. basically: the best character in the cursed child is harry potter. i think the way they wrote his character and ptsd carried the play. it was def his story, not albus’.

i do think dumbledore has some aspects of him that may be considered morally gray, but mostly i dont think he is. he does everything for the good of the world, and his complete selflessness leads him to sacrifice anything for it— even himself and the people he loves, when necessary. i completely understand why people wouldn’t agree with his methods though.

james potter isn’t a sunshine character he’s a dickhead. fans of him made him a golden retriever character to be more palatable for modern times. i like him the way he is: an asshole and then less of an asshole 👍 this is what true stanning looks like

pansy parkinson is racist and out of all the female side characters, developing HER is so questionable from fandom

harry had questionable descriptions about a lot of male characters to make people think he could be a little 🏳️‍🌈 there was bill, there was sirius, there was cedric. but draco is not a part of that list. harry was not feeling draco whatsoever throughout the series but drarry shippers cling to that one ‘obsessed’ line

furthermore, harry rejecting draco’s offer of friendship wasn’t a sad or a ‘what if’ scene. draco was being a classist piece of shit and harry didnt want to fuck with that, there isnt any way in any timeline he wouldve accepted draco’s friendship.

slytherin sucks just generally lol. people want so bad to pluck anti-heroes out of a series that was written specifically with the mind to make all the characters suck.

hermione and ron’s drama isn’t as toxic as people make it out to be. yes, this includes the time hermione sent birds after him. people act like its the end of the world but she was tackling puberty and the end of society soooo i give her a pass to tweak out.

mostly every harry potter character has horrific names. like literally mostly everyone. even the name harry potter 🙁

severus snape’s ‘redemption’ or whatever was so ass. he bullies kids for five years and then everything is chill because… true love? on harry’s mum? are you kidding me 💀

weasley family angst goes hard but people (especially percy stans and some ron&ginny stans) acting like they’re the most toxic family to walk the earth make me want to rip my hair out and eat it. molly loves her kids guys shes not evil. jesus.

YEAHH I ALWAYS THOUGHT THIS, what they do with Sev’s character is literally exactly how they treat any female characters with male love interests/exes/etc. Like hi his “ex” may have been the reason he initially defected and began redeeming himself, but not every single thing he does is about her. People forget that he (+ female characters who get this treatment) is his OWN PERSON and his whole life doesn’t revolve around a woman/man. A lot of y’all like to say “oh Snape bullied kids cuz he couldn’t get with his crush at like 16,” even though he.. bullied kids.. due to his own upbringing and trauma shaping who he is as a person and because he just wanted to bully them? It doesn’t all have to be secretly related to Lily, he didn’t bully Ron bc “oh Ron had red hair and Lily also had red hair so-”, nor did he bully Hermione because “oh actually she’s a good student and a muggleborn so that must mean she reminded him of Lily-”. He bullied them because 1. of their association with Harry 2. their troublemaking 3. Hermione disturbs his lessons and yells out answers 4. Ron is lazy in his lesson and barely listens to him. Honourable mention: there’s absolutely no proof Snape hated Neville because he could’ve been the Chosen One instead of Harry, how would Snape even know about that? It’s like people who say this are just choosing to ignore Neville’s insane inadequacy at Potions, Snape’s reasons for hating Nev are crystal clear, yet y’all still choose to make up different fanon reasons for the sole purpose of bashing him. And also, Snape being a hero doesn’t mean he can’t be an utter asshole too, who said you can’t still be a petty little bitch while saving lives? Sometimes even his own fans can forget that, though thankfully not the majority of us.

mm probably not no!! i think it is absolutely possible to maintain a relationship w/ 'problematic' content, but i think such relationships are better done privately. when u are creating fan-work for Dodgy Content, some of the people engaging with it are fully aware of the dodginess and are exercising good and fun critical thinking, some totally are oblivious to the issues and some just dont care - and the tricky thing is you very often cant tell which group someone falls into on a quick glance. whenever i see someone still drawing hp fanart i nearly always block them on sight because of this, and i dont really want to be part of it :) just too messy!

My favourite female character is Andromeda. The woman is indomitable. She runs away from the wealth and privilege she was born into (with seemingly no fear of Bellatrix). She raises the wonder that is Tonks. She then looses her daughter and husband yet still finds the strength to raise Teddy. A 👸🏻

It's so sad to think about how Andromeda really lost everything to the blood war. First, she lost her family when she married Ted Tonks, a muggleborn, because they couldn't see past their own prejudice.

Then, her husband was killed due to the Muggleborn Registration Commission and she didn't even have time to mourn because, not even a year later, her daughter was killed by her own aunt, Andromeda's sister.

Yet, she still had the strength to raise Teddy (with help from Harry and the Weasley's.) That takes an iron will. She really is a queen.

I have a beloved AU that lives in my head where Dippet did give Tom Riddle the defense job and he realized his true passion in life (tormenting teenagers) and abandons the whole Dark Lord thing to pursue that (and be a scarily competent defense teacher).

Students still call him the Dark Lord because he's kind of very super mean but it's like 80% mundane asshole teacher mean and only 20% murderous dark magic user.

Since he still has the diary and ring horcrux, he looks not a day over 19 and uses that to his advantage to sneak up on his students and scare them all. He also only gives out house points to anyone who causes a problem that Dumbledore has to fix (Neville is winning here, and so were the Marauders).
