Here we go, the first proper chapter of the Saiki K manga, 1-1!

Manga Saiki my beloved. How I missed you. I won’t comment on every single panel because I don’t want to spend —that— long talking about trivial things in this manga. But I’ll do my best to be annoyingly thorough in this re-read. Since I figure it will probably be my last proper re-read from end to end, sequentially. (Because quite frankly this manga is long. And I have other things to do. Hopefully.)

I’m not sure “lax” is the word I would use here? But I don’t like the anime’s use of “airheaded” much either, so?? “Considerably low key” maybe? In any case, the next panel sums it up “They both were the type not to think that deeply about things.” Let’s see… it says かなり緩かった. That seems to be about right, translation wise.

Also, it implies hypothetical strict parents of psychics exist, which… ironically enough, simply doesn’t exist in the Saikiverse. Come on Asou sensei. Give us an official continuation so we can meet some new psychic kid who meets this requirement of having grown up with strict parents.

I love how the very first page shows Saiki committing some selfless act with his powers. And yet he still gives us the spiel about how much psychic powers suck with his signature chronic >:(. Yes; Saiki has been a tsundere since the very beginning.

Saiki’s tsundere-ism aside, I have always liked how Asou sensei explains how psychic powers might be a significant drawback as much as a strength. The metaphor of a domestic dog who is fed and therefore doesn’t have the skill to hunt for itself, and the spoiled child who is given everything and thus robbed of agency, are both particularly good ones. (The curry and spoons one just makes me think of Mob psycho. Do you think One sensei read Saiki k???)

Saiki just lists all of his powers here. That certainly saves time. Though people who have already read the oneshots have the advantage of knowing exactly how these powers work (if we assume them properly canon.) There’s details about Saiki’s powers that get changed from the oneshots to the manga proper, like the timer on his spirit-body separation ability and his “clairvoyance” being called x-ray vision. Wait, no, that was the oneshot. Well, my point still stands.

I also like this part about a sense of achievement being impossible for him, since everything is too easy. It’s rather depressing if you think about it too much. Saiki definitely doesn’t belong in the “normal” life role that he forces himself into. But given his alternatives (Allow himself to become a government lab rat and subject himself to experimentation? Become a worldwide celebrity who fixes the problems of the world and maintains peace, essentially becoming a human god?? hang out with his amoral genius older brother who hates him???) his attempts at normalcy are understandable. And very entertaining.

No extreme emotions… I hope Asou sensei knew the can of worms he was opening by having Saiki say this. But I’m guessing he didn’t.

And the first of Kusuo’s problems in his titular disastrous life is the very normal problem of having to unlock the door for his father, who locked himself out of the house. But at this point, we the readers have no idea the extent of his powers and just how much his full potential is underutilized.

why doesn’t Kurumi have a job..? their mortgage is probably expensive and her son is an older teenager and fully capable of taking care of himself… i guess she just wants to be the doting mom for her son.

Ah!? Is that where Saiki gets his standards for how he uses his powers? Makes sense.

Sigh. watching your parents wrestle while waxing eloquent about coffee jelly. Never change Saiki. (and he never does.) He is really making me crave coffee jelly.

Also, I never see anyone use forced telepathy in fics! More stuff that has so much damn potential… note to future me reading this.

The word used here in the manga is “psi user.” Let’s see… In Japanese, it is 超能力者(chyounouryokusha). Exactly what I expected; the same term as used on the cover. And that’s the word he uses in the anime, too, but in the subtitles, it’s translated as simply “psychic.” For those wondering, he says: 見せてやろう…超能力者の力おな… ‼︎ I am too low level to properly translate this, but I’d say it’s something like, “I’ll show you… a psi user’s power!”

Our translators: “I shall show you… the power of a psi user…!” (and they keep the punctuation and spacing used in the original Japanese.)

:,) He smiles… I love it when he smiles with the sparklies and the shine comes into his eyes. He doesn’t make this expression but a few meager times in the comic. And one of them is at the very end.

Papa also has a temper?? Ugh. He’s such a spoiled child. I can’t blame Kusuo for being a brat when his dad is like that.

And then Kusuo immediately smashes every window in the house using his psi powers out of coffee jelly induced jealousy. Another turn of events that just doesn’t make sense in the anime!!!

The translator note at the end is very sweet. I feel lucky that such a good scan team took on Saiki k; they really put effort into it, even the untranslatable stuff.

Alrighty, (wii fit meditation announcer guy voice) that’s… the end. It took me the better part of four hours to read and touch type all of this on my smartphone. Time well spent. (though I really should have used my computer. No, actually I’d better not, or all of my posts are going to be the length of 0-6…)

When is the next season of the anime coming? - There won't be one. Unless the studio decides to adapt the novels, which is unlikely, they don't have enough source material left to make a full season out of it.

Yes, there is a reason why none of the children wear the name Vaude. I have a story for it and I probably need to write it one day... To sum it up, at a certain point, Langris cut ties with his parents, as he realized their toxic love for him and prefers to stay in contact with his brother. The engagement between house Calmreich/Kira and house Vaude almost broke because of that, but thanks to Finrals determination, as well as Finesses, Langris' help and Finesses mother's ruse, Finral and Finesse still got to marry each other.

Since Langris later married into royalty and took the Vermillion name, none of the brothers children got the name Vaude. Ledior and Lillian had a distant cousin who would now one day take over the Vaudes. They're not happy about it.

Their children don't have much contact with their paternal grandparents. It is of course for the better. Lillian complaints more, but only because her grandchildren are royalty. Ledior sends some gifts for birthdays, even to Finrals children, but he never tried to mend the bonds with his sons.

Since Finesse has a poor health, it wasn't certain if she could even bear any children. So, Finral and Finesse considered adoption to have children, even though it's not considered as "proper" for nobility.

Joshua originally came from the streets and had to steal to survive. He once stumbled upon Finral, who decided to take him in momentarily since he obviously needed help. Soon, Finral and Finesse got attached to Joshua and offered to adopt him. Joshua, while growing attached to those two, was a bit hesitant, but a word from his new uncle Langris made accept the offer.

Lemony came from the orphanage. Finesse met him when she visited that orphanage for charity. She immediately took a liking into him and discussed with the director so that she could adopt him as soon as possible. She surprised Finral with a new child when he came home.

Anastasia was a surprise pregnancy for everyone. Of course, Finral was worried for Finesse, but she took a lot of rest during those nine months. After a difficult birth – which ended up leaving Finesse sterile for good, but she was fine thanks to Owen and Mimosa – a little girl was born, named after Finrals mother. Anastasia thankfully didn't got her mother's frail health, on the contrary, she is as healthy as an ox.

Joshua and Lemony are VERY protective of their little sister.

Mimosa and Langris were first friends before slowly starting to fall in love. Mimosa always put him in his place with that calm face she always has when angry... and surprisingly, Langris started to fell for her partly because of that. Really need to write at least one oneshot about them one day^^'

@acacia-may Lemony is named because I thought about you while creating him and because I remembered that you love ASOUE as well ;)

Jacinto is their first born, their two daughters are closer to age together.

They love to prank their father^^

Joshua has very pale purple wild hair and orange eyes, he has Spatial magic (which was handy during his stealing period). Lemony has emerald green hair, rather long & wavy and lemon yellow eyes, his magic is Obsidian. Anastasia has her mother's black hair and her father's pinkish purple eyes, she got Light magic from her mother.

Jacinto has the orange hair of his mother, chin length, and the blue eyes of his father, he got Vine magic. Iris has brown hair like Langris and green eyes like Mimosa, she is the only one of her sibling to got Spatial magic. Amaryllis has her mother's orange hair and her eyes are a mix of her parents, a bright blue-green, she has Leaves magic.

The two brothers are really close now, even more with their respective families.

Klaus was awake again, at a time when he should not have been awake.

Klaus had woken up early on the day they went to Briny Beach and his parents had died (he shuddered as he thought this), he had woken up early to finish his book about Briny Beach’s insect life, and had wanted to go and see it for himself. His parents said that they were too busy to take him. Klaus said that they were old enough to go on their own. His parents had been hesitant but had let them go after breakfast. But if only he hadn’t…if only…

It was all his fault.

And even after their parents died he couldn’t do anything right. He had thought he was so clever, reading up on nuptial laws, why didn’t he see before how stupid it was to think that a few books could save them? That was one thing Olaf had been right about. Violet had kept inventing things to get them out of all sorts of terrible situations and what could he do? Read? Without books he was more of a hindrance than a help.  Just another sibling Violet felt that she had a duty to keep safe. Just another weight on everyone’s shoulders.

I pretty much go for it as soon as ideas strike. Sometimes I'll wait a little longer to talk it over with a friend and work stuff out.

I work on multiple at a time, but this is mostly cause I never finish anything and always have another wip to work on if I get stumped.

I do outline, but they're not super detailed, and they're subject to a lot of change. More of a brainstorming tool. And then I tend to stray from them and not know how to get back on track because I feel too married to the outline...this is why I never finish anything except oneshots lol.

13. Do you listen to music while you write?  If yes, what have you been listening to recently?

Yes! Music kinda flows in one ear and out the other if I'm not consciously paying attention, so while I try to pick songs that fit thematically (I have many, many playlists for ships/fics), the thing that matters most is general tempo/energy.

TMNT fic. I will admit that I still haven't seen the actual show. I follow the tag on ao3, because the people who have seen it are so talented. Anyways, this fic masterfully glides between angst (currently occurring) and tooth-rotting fluff (flashbacks). Protective sibling dynamics, incredibly soft flashbacks, and a whirlwind of painful emotions. (Warning for major character death.)

🔁 - A fic you’ve re-read several times in which Nick Baudelaire is Trapped in the Closet by midas_touch_of_angst ( @unfortunate-stranger-losers on tumblr)

ASOUE fic. It's a oneshot that's part of a larger AU (a really good one that I need to re-read as well) but I've ended up re-reading it by itself so many times. It's got sibling shenanigans taking place, the dialogue is so delightfully funny, and the pacing of it just makes it perfect. It's so fun to read. Absolutely love it.

I was just stalking through all of my old WIPs, and so here's a comprehensive list (that no one asked for) of all the ASOUE fanfictions I scrapped:

A character study on Quigley Quagmire, focusing on his upbringing, him being a 'problem child', him being diagnosed with ADHD and depression, etc.

A character study on Quigley experimenting with gender roles: a sort of 5 + 1 thing of them coming to terms with gender non-conformity

A Quiglet oneshot of Violet doing Quigley's makeup.

A character study/Quigley-centric fic that focused on his insomnia and how he'd already discovered the tunnel system under their house from his late-nights wandering the mansion

(Actually finished, just never posted it because it's rubbish) Dunklaus sorta reincarnation oneshot where Duncan works in a museum and Klaus is an immortal being who consistently is his muse in every lifetime. One of Duncan's favourite marble statues in the gallery was actually created by him, for Klaus, hundreds of years before but he doesn't remember until he sees Klaus again

Dunklaus oneshot where the whole group attended an actual boarding school. No olaf or anything. Just a wintery plot-less thing

(Also finished, also too shit to post) Modern Dunklaus one shot where Duncan runs a record store with his siblings and Klaus comes in one day. Literally just everyone teasing the two for 6k words straight. (favourite excerpt: '“So, why didn’t you ask him out?” Isadora asked, probably aiming for casual, except the way she was leaning on the wall like she was posing for an 80s boy band poster, and the way her voice was just a bit too high pitched, meant she wasn’t being very convincing.

Duncan gave her a flat look. “I have had two conversations with him,” he said, turning back to the receipt he was marking and ignoring the look she was giving him, which solidly said stop being purposefully obtuse.'

Post-canon Violet-centric Quiglet one shot. Just Violet reminiscing and moving on

Dunklaus AU where the Baudelaires are exchange students from France to Prufrock Prep. Extremely angsty and absolutely nothing happy happens. Just wanted to exercise the French Baudelaires headcanon

(Alot of this one was already written) Dunklaus AU where they're partnered up for a VFD mission

Quiglet magical AU where Quigley is a magical creature that lives in the woodland behind Monty's house where Violet and Klaus move after they're orphaned

Dunklaus and Quiglet (but not the main focus) - AU where the Baudelaires leave with Lemony after the fire at Hotel Denouement and become increasingly morally grey. When they reunite with the Quagmires a year later, they're practically unrecognisable from what fighting both against and with VFD has done to them

Violet and Klaus character study on how they deal with their grief; there was a little bit of Viodora and Duncan and some funny antics. The only WIP on this list entirely in French. Never posted it because there would be no interest and it didn't have a plot particularly

I'm pretty sure there are more that I just can't find or deleted but yeah...God there's a lot. These span over several years of being obsessed with asoue and ships in the fandom that I fell in love with that had (and still have) a painful lack of attention online, so I made my own content

Onto the first volume proper: volume 0, of course!!

First of all, Aso sensei’s note is so cute. I love how he says he’s been expressionless the entire time, but he really is happy. Relatable.

Aaaaaand the cover image of Saiki sure is interesting. what’s with the pipe?? I seem to remember it being a reference to another work of his somehow.

Also, volume zero announcement Saiki is very cute. His expression reminds me of a cat.

Even from the first oneshot to volume zero, you can see how much Aso sensei’s artistic abilities have improved.

That said, baby Saiki still looks very strange… I can’t overemphasize how much he improved as an artist over the course of Saiki k in drawing human characters looking natural, in pose and their clothing, expressions, etc.

I like that volume 0 Saiki’s father actually kind of looks like him. Ah… well maybe it would all be a little too real if Saiki’s family resembled him a little more. It would certainly be less whimsical. Imagine Kuniharu having black hair. Imagine Kuusuke *not* being a blonde. That would be more uncomfortable somehow. I’m glad Asou sensei made up the thing about anime hair being a result of Saiki’s powers.

More examples of why Kusuo thinks people are terribly insincere… using the most extreme of unsavory unstated thoughts.

And here we get a slightly more liberal estimate of how much time it would take for a normal person to go insane… three days instead of three hours. I think Asou sensei likes the number three, since later on he mentions that it would take Saiki three days to destroy the world if he really wanted to.

Here we have the first frontal closeup of the Saiki Scowl, after he explains the hassle of telepathy. Really, I think it’s the most taxing power on him, mentally, for obvious reasons. It really is cool that Asou sensei was able to make a “surly” character like Saiki into such an interesting protagonist. (Mostly because he’s well written.) He’s definitely not a typical manga protagonist, but he functions very nicely in his (comedic) straight man role.

Also can I just say this is one of my favorite panels of Saiki in the entire manga, and it’s not even part of the series proper… Yes, why did he, Saiki? I also want to know… I can see why this was left out of volume one. It’s not funny exactly (maybe in a kind of dark way) but god. Baby Saiki saying this tugs at my heart strings.

Head always full of thoughts of the intelligence agency organization that kidnapped him at age four… that he erased, along with the unnamed nation…

good grief.

Kuusuke would have been six at this time; maybe old enough to help with the coverup so something like that didn’t become world news. Or maybe young Saiki just decided to use mind control, since he didn’t have any compunctions about that at the time.

I dislike a Nendou with readable thoughts, or a Nendou called a “violent, foul mouthed delinquent” instead of an idiot.

That said, I really like this Saiki side eye… it’s a thoroughly Saiki expression.

LOL. Nendou would be me in the situation though. If so many people accuse you of something that you didn’t do, it’s hard not to doubt yourself a little, right?

Yeah, we get a pretty good picture of Saiki’s pretty rational moral compass. Someone like Nendou definitely deserves it, but even so, he shouldn’t be punished for a crime he didn’t commit in Saiki’s eyes. Especially when the heinous perpetrator is right there all along.

Also, Takahashi’s (saiki-caused hallucination) angel counterpart looks just like him, but female. Interesting.

That Saiki can manipulate someone like this by altering their moral compass sure is something. Makes me think of this post.

Lastly and certainly not least, Saiki isn’t escaping the gay allegations even in volume zero… lol. That’s a priceless facial expression. “This power is useless except for getting idiots to like you” smh, so unappreciative of the new friend, Saiki. XD
