I had this rant in my drafts for a few days thinking about not ever posting it, but I just saw *yet another* post of this kind, so f* this.
I hate how much fandom and tumblr has informed me that it's cool to hate on the Avatar-the-blue-people film series because the first film is "ssoooo cringe and hahaha there is noooo fanfic haha because it's soooo bad even though it is one of the highest crossing films hahah" and "AtLAB is soooo much better". Like: WHY is it necessary to shit on people's enjoyment when it does nothing to hurt you? It's not the funny "gotcha" you think it is. It's just mean-spirited. Like sure hate on companies and big name creators, but have you thought about what this does to people *just like you* who just happen to enjoy a thing?
It's grown to a point that I don't even want to mention I enjoyed it even a little bit, never mind admitting how much I loved it back when the first one came out. And yes, it has issues - which big film doesn't? But it was such an eye-opener in terms of scifi - not only in terms of how FUCKING GOOD scifi could look on screen without being all "spaceship tech and battles hehehe ooohehehe" but also in terms of what a full alien ecosystem could be. I still have the movie poster hung up. I own the artbook. And the soundtrack. There are literally no other films I can say that about.
It was massively influential for my taste in scifi as well as my way of writing alien landscapes and I felt seen for the way in which my love for nature transcends any care I have for humanity as a species.
Anyway I have been to see part II and love it no less and if not for this stupid nonsense you'd think tumblr'd be all over it - like they have made such strides from the issues of the first one.
It's a story of a family that isn't defined by blood. Of belonging even when you're different. Of loving and protecting nature. There's a heavily neurodivergently coded character who explicitly has epilepsy (and a FEMALE one at that). There's no shortage of strong women without the need to make them... act especially male. There's significantly less white-savourism than in the first one. There's a culture that has a heavily sign-language based conversation style that is completely normalised. It looks *amazing*. The soundtrack is fantastic. It's become an ensemble cast. It's opened up the world even more.
Is it trope-y as all hell, very unsubtle in its message and is its plot flat (and/or repetitive from the first one)? Sure. But the same is true for literally every action/super hero movie, and everyone seems to love those. (And at least in terms of repetitiveness some is definitely intentional - as in relevant to the story! - parallels).
Is it fairly amato- and heteronormative? Yeah. But again, that's pretty much every media.
Is there a significant amount of violence and death - also yes. But to me it's the brutality of a war film - it's supposed to be brutal, it's supposed to be unpleasant and raw in places, whereas a lot of violence in movies otherwise feels to me like I'm supposed to enjoy it.
There are probably other ~~problematic~~ things, and if not in the film then with the people or businesses involved, sure. And I'm not dismissing them. I'm not saying it's perfect. But unlike other media I could mention, as far as I'm aware, it's not an active instrument in a hate campaign, and yet all I see is criticism and I have no one to talk to about it IRL and, following this tumblr attitude, no one I really want to admit to that I like it on here, either.
Anyway. I'm ranting. But if a movie has the power to make me cry from beauty as well as pain, make me lose myself in awe and shake with incandescent rage, have a sheer RANGE of emotional responses, I can't honestly pretend I didn't enjoy it. Just let people enjoy it.

Posting this wip cause this rad as hell. credit to my older brother <3
(bit messy and a lil rough since this was copied from our text thread)
_________
"You knew."
Zuko whispered, staggering backwards.
Ozai didn't turn to face him, continuing to gaze up at the tapestry.
"you knew what Grandfather was planning. that's why you survived. why didn't you warn anyone? Iroh-"
"Was meant to perish like his son." Ozai finally spoke.
Zuko's eyes widened.
"Why?"
"you already know why."
Zuko tasted bile, "Because the people would've never worshiped you while iroh remained."
Ozai Nodded levelly.
"but mother? Azula?"
"I if i had protected you, Azulon would've realized i was a step ahead of him, out coup would have failed." Ozai said. his voice flat, his face stone.
"yes i could have saved her."
Zuko couldn't choke out the next question, but his father answered all the same.
"and yes, i was prepared to lose you and your sister."
zuko clenched and unclenched his fists, "why?"
Ozai's frown deepened, confusion passed over his face like a shadow. his gaze did not leave Sozin's tapestry, in the fading daylight it's threads flickered like live flame.
"what do you mean?"
"why? why didn't you stop him? why did you let him do it?"
finally his father looked at him, Zuko fought to hold his father's gaze.
"the people loved Azulon. Until their fear of him outweighed their love, they would never defy him. i needed the people to rebel and Azulon himself would give them their rallying cry: 'The Emperor murders his own kin."
"I did stop him. I burned him and his wretched heirs to ash - but I waited until they had built their own pyre."
Ozai and Zuko were standing very closely. Zuko's eyes searching his father's face for a hint of emotion.
"And what if we burned too?" Zuko asked quietly
it was gone in an instant, but he was certain he saw it: water in his father's eyes.
"then you would have been added to the price i paid to fulfill my destiny. Instead the Stars favored us. Iroh Survived - a cripple but alive. You and your sister were preserved - favored! You have become heroes to our people, and before the first snowfall, you will prove again that our family are the chosen-! out of all others: us."
Zuko's eyes flickered to the tapestry of Sozen, which framed his father's figure from behind. The comet framing his father's head, a scarlet crown.
"Did Lu Ten know?"
Ozai seemed surprised.
"What?"
"was he going to warn Iroh?"
Ozai actually smiled at his son, impressed.
"yes. And if he had Iroh would have inherited the throne. It wouldn't have mattered if I beat him in combat - the people would never support the sone of a second wife over the blood heir of the Emperor."
Ozai continued "but heirless? Crippled? He would have shamed himself by claiming his birthright"
"But- he treated you like a brother! you told me you admired him!"
The pride in Ozai's face faded at that remark
"Zuko," he placed his hand on his son's shoulder forcing him to meet his gaze "have you never killed and enemy whom you admired?"
__________
working on a fanfiction that's sorta an avatar AU, based around the concept of Ozai being an actual character rather plank of wood with a flamethrower attached to it. this is the rough draft of the prologue.
for context:
this fic is about Ozai's ascension to the throne with a lot of changes; the biggest change being that Ozai is the only son of Azulon's second wife.
Iroh is Ozai's half brother in this, and Ozai has eight older siblings born to Azulon's first wife.

Seeing with fire.
After the agni kie the medic told him that Zuko was lucky to even have a eye after such a severe injury. But when being banished from home With a Barely healed facial scar that came with profound hearing and vision loss. It didn’t feel very lucky .
Not that it would stop him. In fact he refused to admit that there was anything wrong with his vision .
His uncle would just sigh and take that into account when training him. Giving him the skills he needed to hold his own.
Zuko would never admit it. But he noticed that uncle taken to standing on his blind side when they travelled so no one could sneak up on him. He appreciated it immensely. He hated it when people appeared out of nowhere from a point that he used to be able to see .
And with what little hearing remained he could still hear low sounds. So he could still mostly understand uncle when he stood on his deaf side. It made him feel a little less disabled . This would also subtly force people who he couldn’t hear as well to stand on his hearing side
—-/////——////—
The only person that he openly told was toph. When he first joined the ganng They bonded over there blindness. She thought he had the bad deal. He had lost his vision . He knew what a full field of vision looked like .We’re as she was born blind . She didn’t know any difference . But she never once pitiedhim. It was one of the things he liked about her .
Zuko was fascinated by tophs ability to “see”. And she joked that if she could teatch the avatar earth banding she could teatch him to see. They laughed about it but after a lot of trial and error Zuko managed to create his own form of “ vision “ by sensing heat sources through his bending . it wasn’t as nuanced as tophs but was perfect for “seeing “ people approching from his blind side .
No one could ever sneek up on him again.
With enugh practice he even worked out that you could tell the difference between different benders and non benders. ( fire benders ran hot and water benders ran cold ) as well as sensing if people were in the next room to him.
——-////——-////———-
After the war the palaces council always descused the latest story that had emerged of what there New fire Lord had gotten up to during the war. If they asked him about the rumours Zuko would neither confirm or deny it but there is NO WAY he could have been the blue spirit ( who had been given a full pardon for there crimes ) Or had broken into the North Pole by diving in freezing tiger seal tunnels . Those things only happen in spirit tails.
But in a meeting when Zuko had calmly stood up and announced to his guards. that there was an assassination attempt happening and that there was three fire benders and two non benders on the roof about to brake in through the ceiling . Only for said men to come crashing down 10 seconds later and be quickly apprehended buy the weighting gaurd .
The council had all desided that day that the fire lord could in fact see through walls.

“Thanks for coming with me,” Sokka said, leaning against the balcony.

“Did I have a choice?” Zuko asked, wincing at how harsh it sounded.

Sokka just scoffed. “Uh, yeah. Nobody can make you do anything, you’re the Fire Lord. There’s like, two people on this planet who can tell you what to do and you’d listen— the Avatar and your uncle.”

“Three,” Zuko corrected.

“What?”
“Three people who can make me do stuff I don’t want to do,” Zuko said, softly. “The Avatar, my uncle, and you.”

—

Approaching the 10th anniversary of his coronation, Fire Lord Zuko hopes that by the time they return to the capital he’ll have another thing to celebrate: his engagement to Sokka.

Prince Zuko meeting your parents headcanons:
He’s super nervous and keeps asking if you’re sure about this
So nervous, he’s a soft boy truly
You’re sure, you want everyone to meet and for him to join your family
Zuko is fretting over his outfit, what to bring, what to say
He does not fret about his hair tho, he immediately knows he wants his hair up in his lil bun
He wants to look formal and respectful
He bows to your parents first thing
While eating dinner he’s chooses to sit next to your father and across from you
He’s a little shy, almost regal
He landed the tea joke! Brownie points for the prince!
Your parents don’t ask Zuko or you about his scar, they’re so sweet
He bows goodbye to your parents, your mom hugs you both goodbye
Zuko smiles so big at this and you’re literally beaming
The second you two are alone the bun comes out and he hugs you so tight
He kept the pda completely minimal to be respectful
But when you get back to your house he can’t keep his hands off you, he missed your touch
You stroke his hair tell him to wear his hair down next time, he says no promises
Must be a prince thing

You sighed, sitting on the furthest most side of the couch, Sokka on the other side of you. Your legs were crossed as you held your cheek in your hand and your elbow on the armrest.
You two had been in this position for over an hour. The tension was thick in the air. “Are you going to leave?” You asked, quietly.
“What?”
“The relationship. Us. Are you going to leave?” You repeated, your (color) eyes not meeting his blue ones.
“Over dishes?” He raised an eyebrow, his head turned to look at you.
“That’s what I’m asking.” You shrugged.
“Do you want me to leave?”
“What kind of question is that?” You scoffed, looking out of the window.
“Well what kind of question is you asking me if I’m going to leave this relationship over some dirty dishes?” Sokka asked, you didn’t know if it was annoyance or hurt in his voice, but it sure was something.
“Well maybe some people didn’t have perfect relationships where they’re able to break off mutually and still be best friends with their ex.”
“This is about Suki?”
“No…”
“It’s about Suki.”
“No. It’s about me. Not everything is about perfect the perfect Suki.” You scoffed.
“Hey I never said that.”
“No. But you know what everyone else says.”
“No. I don’t. What do they say?”
“Forget about it.” You got off the couch. “It’s stupid, you wouldn’t care.”
“Don’t you ever say I wouldn’t care about your feelings.” Sokka stood up. “I worry about you and your feelings all day. Everyday actually, you are my first thought waking up and my last thought going to sleep. Don’t you ever say anything like that just because you’re upset over an issue you’ve never even talked to me about.”
“Sokka… I’m sorry.” You sighed. “I didn’t want to scare you away.”
“Scare me away from what?”
“My past. My issues. My insecurities.” You sat back down on the couch.
“This is about (ex) then.”
“Yes.”
“God… I’m sorry.” He looked at you. “I forgot how terrible (she/he) was to you.”
“It’s not your fault.” You shook your head, looking back over to Sokka. “I didn’t want to burden you on my issues or anytime I’m jealous. We’re adults.”
“Adults who went through terrible things.”
“I’m sorry Sokka. I should have been honest and upfront with you.”
“I’m sorry too (Y/N). I should’ve taken into consideration how (ex) had made you feel. I know it probably isn’t much, but I can only go on my word, but, I love you. Nothing I do is an intentional attempt to harm you, as in emotionally, mentally, or physically. I’m glad to be your boyfriend. You mean the world to me.” Sokka smiled as he grabbed your hand. “You’ve come a long way (N/N). I’m proud of you.”

Bathed in Flames.
Hello, I wrote a little something. I also posted it on AO3 if you’d rather see it there.
rating: G || no warnings || fandom: atla/atlab || character(s): Zuko, Mai ||
additional tags: other main characters mentioned, vignette, angst, Zuko-centric, Zuko’s scar, angst and feels, teen angst, guilt, dysfunctional family, family issues, personal growth, bending, Iroh is a good uncle, meditation, dreaming
summary:  Three vignettes written about three of my favorite parts Zuko's character arc: where he came from, what he did, and who he became.
There were times when he didn’t dream. His sleep was left unmarred by troubling visions of destiny or night terrors of dishonor. However, this wasn’t a night of blissful awareness, as most nights were. He was only half asleep, one part of his brain could still hear the crackling of the fire in the center of his chambers as well as the sound of the water sloshing against the sides of the ship. The air was tainted with the smell of coal burning deep within the belly of the ship. The blazing hot life inside the engine called out to him, the flames he could clearly feel licking up his legs and torso, arms and back, until it entirely engulfed him.
It could have been terrifying for someone else to experience. However, it was only natural for him. Firebenders could sense their element when it was in close vicinity, and of course the stronger the source, the more it made itself known to the benders that controlled it.
This was perhaps the only time of the day in which his bending abilities and his sense of fire did not soothe or calm him, ground him or give him balance. When he slipped into his own dreamworld where he couldn’t hold back his ridgid control on his memories, he fell into the deepest pits of despair. The sound of the crackling fire and the sloshing of the water on ship and the sense of the great roaring fire within said ship only brought him back to the day of his Agni Kai.
The torches that filled the viewing benches around the arena crackled the same as the one in his room. The water in the moat around the arena sloshed against the stone structures that confined it as did the sea against his confining ship. The engine rumbled . . .
Zuko distantly felt the rumbling through his bed from the floor. It wasn’t enough to rouse him from his half-aware state because of how long he had been on this Godforsaken ship. Regardless, the rumbling only further enhanced his painful memory. The rumbling was the way the crowd stomped and cheered for the fight between father and son. It was the sound of the searing flames his father unleashed upon him even when he begged for mercy.
The pain was all he could remember after looking up to see the fire reaching for him. The agony remained for days and days afterwards. It smarted him for weeks to come, the skin always sore and hurting. It would never feel normal, always tight and dry like leather. He was lucky to make it out with his eye and eyesight.
Barely aware he was doing it, Zuko reached for his scar, covering it from any further harm. It was a pathetic attempt. His father could sear through his hand and probably his skull as well. The threat always lingered with him. His father was clear that if he were to return to him, Zuko would be killed.
Banging on his chamber door startled him out of his sleepy brooding and into his fully awake brooding.
“What is it?” He snarled.
“Prince Zuko, we have reached the Southern Water Tribe.”
Cruel excitement swirled in his gut. “Gather your men. We disembark as soon as the ship’s nose crosses into their village.”
*
Zuko dreamed pleasant visions for once when he was back inside the Fire Nation’s capital, he was home . It felt right to be there. There was always the bonus of having Mai in his arms. Her hair brushed against his chin and her breathing against his throat. Something about those feelings lulled him into a sense of security.
The dreams, while happy and contented, were sure to bring anguish to Zuko when he woke. He dreamt of the Avatar, alive and well. He dreamt being on the shores of the Fire Nation watching the kid sail through the wind off the ocean on that contraption of his. He kept happily gliding without a care in the world, whooping and laughing all the while. It was almost like the scene took place a hundred years prior. When there was no war and the Avatar had visited the Fire Nation as a normal boy. He had friends here and a good relationship with the people.
Of course, Aang was enjoying himself, as were the other three. Toph had busied herself trying her hand at sand bending a sandcastle, though Zuko could tell she wasn’t a huge fan of it. Katara and Sokka were out in the water with Sokka trying to surf but ultimately failing, eventually Katara bended a wave that was easy enough for her brother to ride on. This only boosted his ego.
Zuko smiled, genuinely smiled, at the scene. Maybe this was paradise? Some idyllic world where the crown Prince of the Fire Nation was friends with the Avatar.
As soon as the vision began, it was swiftly taken away. Zuko stirred, feeling the coattails of happiness in its wake. He opened his eyes to the choice he had made. He chose not to fight with the avatar, but against him. His sister had shot down the boy with lightning and killed him, yet gave Zuko the credit. It wasn’t long afterwards that the guilt set in. A myriad of emotions crashed over him. Anguish was the best descriptor. The Avatar’s words echoed to him as he laid there watching his girlfriend as she slept.
If we knew each other back then, do you think we could have been friends, too?
*
It was the day of Zuko’s coronation. He was dressed in robes that reminded him of his father. They were heavy on his shoulders. Or perhaps it was the weight of the responsibility that he now carried. Even though he had not been officially crowned as the new fire lord, he had inherited the position after his father had been forced out. As Ozai’s oldest child, Zuko was set to be crowned and carried the burden of the entire fire nation.
Not even a week ago he was still on the run with the avatar, fighting and sneaking around. He had been starving, imprisoned, shunned, and beaten the first time he had been away from home, right after the Agni Kai. And since then, Zuko has been at his lowest in the past year. He hadn’t even thought he could go lower. Then to be humbled when he joined the avatar’s gang and redeemed himself.
What a journey he had been on.
When Zuko found his own eyes in the mirror of his dressing room, he couldn’t believe the contrast in what he found. He recognized himself, but he had changed so much that he was unsure. He had aged and lost weight, leaving his cheeks hollow and his face gaunt. He was wearing the fire lord’s robes, a sight he never thought to be possible. His hair had grown long enough to be put into a top knot which a hair piece would be placed signifying his new status. It was almost too much to comprehend.
The scar was the only thing that grounded him. It made it unquestionable who Zuko was seeing in the mirror. The person he saw was a product of their journey. Whether the wounds were physical as the scar on his face or invisible as were the ones on his heart, they were testament. They would be his legacy.
He took a deep breath and closed his eyes. He faintly felt the candles and low embers of the incense burning in the room. When he took a breath, the few sources of fire flared and grew brighter. Then, Zuko meditated. Everything he was worried about was being pushed aside in his mind. He thought of Iroh and his tea to help.
The first thing Zuko came across in his thoughts was his sister. Azula was still wailing and fighting for escape. This particular thought was unexpectedly painful to deal with. There was so much driving force between them from their father that once he had been removed, it left this awkward, empty space. He always loved his sister, but it wasn’t like how Sokka loved Katara. It was a cold and distant concern. At times, Zuko questioned if he did actually care. He was afraid that maybe too much time and pressure had permanently estranged them. It felt like they could never be able to pick up the pieces or try to have a semblance of normalcy, but he knew he had to try and bridge the gap. Though, in the state Azula was in, that would be completely impossible. Maybe the healers Zuko sent to her would be able to help her.
He pushed the thought away and made it smoke in his mind. It drifted away.
Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Toph were all going on more adventures. Really they were supposed to be helping people in their transition out of the fire nation’s hold. However, Zuko was sure they were prone to stir up trouble. Deep down he worried for their safety, especially now in the midst of great change. There were already reports of rebellions both in and out of the fire nation. Secret groups were being formed and threats on his life were being sent out. He could only imagine what hung over Aang’s head.
The thought became mist, and drifted before settling on another worry.
His mother was still alive. It was a thought that had been pushing for attention in his mind even when he needed to stay focused. He missed her so much at times he felt like he would implode. The first thing he did when he had the power to was order an investigation into the whereabouts of Ursa. Even so, he was planning a visit to see his father. There was a chance the previous fire lord would at least give him something, but Zuko wasn’t optimistic.
The thought turned to rain. Curiously when he opened his eyes to find the rain he began to feel, he found fat tears rolling down his face.
He wiped them away. They had caught him off guard. No more would his emotions catch him unaware. He needed to be comfortable in his ability to feel them, name them, and, to an extent, control them. His empathy was the tool he needed in becoming a great fire lord. One that Ozai refused to acknowledge during his time in power. Hopefully, Zuko would be able to hold onto it.
Hopefully, Zuko would never become his father.

Fire lord Zuko being just a bit ferrel . And his music taste is no different
At his coronation. Some of his surviving crew Start a sea shanty. Coz though he pretends he hates them they know he loves them.
There’s a moment of tense quiet when all the upperclass look at the new fire lord shocked at sutch a scandal. To see what he’ll do, expecting him to be angry . Only for Zuko ( who in his defence is still on a lot of pain meds ) to join in enthusiastically knowing all the words .
He also likes a lot of angry “ down with the fire lord” music that he Hurd in the earth kingdom. Witch is problematic since he now is said leader. He once took a protest completely off guard coz they were expecting a fight but Instead he told them to carry on coz he liked that song .
