Taylor Swift praises Charli XcX in recent interview:
“I’ve been blown away by Charli’s melodic sensibilities since I first heard ‘Stay Away’ in 2011,” Swift says. “Her writing is surreal and inventive, always. She just takes a song to places you wouldn’t expect it to go, and she’s been doing it consistently for over a decade. I love to see hard work like that pay off.”

[ID: The "missing the point" meme, now with a hybercube or tesseract saying, "Racism, ableism, misogyny, and classism are bad.", with the yellow A Sphere from the 2007 Flatland film staring at it in open-mouthed shock, exclaiming, "Wow!! Absurdist humor!!!" while the point flies over his head. End ID.]
Flatland a Romance of Many Dimensions spends literally half of its length doing nothing but criticizing systems of inequality.
The 2007 Flatland film is not exempt from the criticism of Flatland adaptations for brushing aside the political commentary to instead focus almost solely on the interdimensional theory.
You don't have to pretend that the absurdist comedy is scathing political commentary that forces the audience to think about the systems of inequality they themselves may be holding up without question. We all know it's not. It is possible to be both a comedy and scathing political commentary (See: Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions). But the 2007 Flatland film absolutely is not.
Edit August 20 2024: Ladd Ehlinger, the creator of the 2007 Flatland film, is disgustingly fucking racist and misogynistic. He is literally a proud conservative.
He made a political ad in 2011 that's literally so blatantly racist and misogynistic that youtube has literally restricted it so you literally cannot share the link outside of youtube.
Because it's that blatantly fucking bigoted.
I wish I could say I'm shocked but considering how terribly the 2007 film handles the themes of the original novel, I'm not surprised in the least.
The ad literally has Black men chanting, "give me your cash bitch so we can shoot up the street", while a white woman, with the face of the politician the add is against photoshopped over her, pole dances as a sex worker.
He runs a tumblr account so make sure you block him. His username is filmladd.
He's literally a racist misogynistic conservative.
For the love of all that's holy everyone please stop promoting this film immediately and make sure people are aware of exactly what kind of person produced it.
Edit August 26: Here's a link to the post I made that links to many places to read and listen to Flatland in various formats, all for free since the book is public domain!

saw a couple posts about today (Aug 9th) being Damian Wayne's birthday, but when I looked for a source I couldn't find one for the life of me. which of course sent me down a rabbit hole of batfam birthdays. so.
Official Birthdays
Tumblr media
*official as in they appear in canon and seem to be the most popular amongst fans. a bunch of these knuckleheads have multiple birthdays.
Cassandra Cain was born on January 26th according to Batgirl (2000) #33, though in that same issue she celebrates it some time in June because fuck her dad.
Bruce Wayne was born of February 19th according to the Detective Comics #494 fan letters column. Or April 7th, if you're looking at Star Spangled Comics #91 (Golden Age), or October 7th in Legends of the Dark Knight (2021) #10. Feb 19th seems to be the one that's used most often.
Dick Grayson was born on "the first day of spring" (aka March 20th) according to Robin (1993) Annual #4, or November 11th according to the Super DC Calendar of 1976, or a week-ish before Halloween according to Secret Origins (1986) #50, or December 1st according to Young Justice (2011) #20. March 20th fits into the robin origin story though, so we're gonna go with that.
Alfred Pennyworth was born on April 8th according to the Super DC Calendar of 1976, or August 16th according to Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year Five #26 (side note: double colons in titles should be illegal). Neither of these are anywhere near real canon, but Injustice is supplementary material for a fighting game, and I'm always more inclined to go with a pure comics source. Plus this way he and Jason don't have to share.
Tim Drake was born on July 19th according to Robin (1993) #116. He's only got the one birthday and in that issue he totally forgot about it.
Jason Todd was born on August 16th according to Detective Comics #790. No information on when exactly his rebirth day is.
Barbara Gordon was born on September 23rd according to the Super DC Calendar of 1976. That's the only source we've got so that's what we're gonna use.
Unofficial Birthdays
Stephanie Brown, Duke Thomas, and Damian Wayne have never had their birthdays stated in canon, so most people have assigned them birthdays based on either their debut date (Duke) or some other criteria that is a mystery to me. Those dates (from what I have gathered) respectively are:
Steph: August 11th, Duke: August 13th, Damian: August 9th
Tumblr media
WHY ARE THEY ALL AUGUST??? THAT'S 4 (or 5 if you count Alfred) BIRTHDAYS IN THE SPAN OF A WEEK! WHY DO THEY ALL HAVE TO BE LEOS???
anyway that's the fruits of my afternoon/evening. if anyone has corrections with sources or dc canonizes a birthday in a comic I'm not reading (which is most of them, my comics taste is stuck in the 90s/early 2000s), let me know.

*** This is the 3rd part of Digimon Xros Wars saga with Tagiru, Yuu and Taiki as the protagonists. This 3rd part has the overly long title so we fans prefer to call it 'Digimon Xros Wars: Hunters' or 'Digimon Young Hunters'.
**** Yes, this movie has an overly long title. I had a hard time deciding whether to highlight it in bold or not.
Happy Digimon Day!

Adam Lanza: Animal Rights and Veganism
Created only as a resource for those interested in Adam's morality, not as glorification or positive reinforcement of his mind's workings.
Statements as spoken by Adam on his YouTube channel 'CulturalPhilistine' (2011-2012), regarding his views on Animal Rights and Veganism.
"The McDonalds corporation exploits animals. I’ve been a vegan since I was thirteen but it’s kind of … completely r*tarded to think that you’re actually accomplishing anything by not . . . being a vegan doesn’t mean that you do not harm animals, by living, by choosing life you are … it’s, life is innately harmful, life is innately coercive to everyone else..."
------(Pointless) CulturalPhilistine: The Movie {28 September 2011}
"I used to think it was a contradiction for people to say, um, that it was a contradiction for people to say that b*stiality somehow violated an animal’s rights and yet those same people, the same meateaters, would advocate factory-farming. And they didn’t think that violated animals” rights, when how could you possibly say that having sex with an animal violates its rights but killing the animals not? It didn’t make any sense to me."
------Rambling vlogrant of a ruminative vagrant {8 September 2011}
"'Two: It seems you’re always on some sort of diet?' By definition, yes."

AO3 Spirk Posts By Year
If it feels like you can't keep up with this year's crop of fics, there's a wonderful reason.
2024 is shaping up to be a bumper year for Spirk! I saw a post of the top 100 fandoms on AO3 and wondered what being number 73 in 2024 meant in actual numbers.
This inspired me to do a medium dive (because I didn't break it up by TOS/AOS/SNW-Disco and instead just looked for all Spirk) into total AO3 posts.
For those of you who are curious, here's the total number of posts tagged James T. Kirk/Spock by year.
With the notable exception of 2013, Spirk has remained steady with around 1000 total posts per year from 2011 - 2020. There's been a slow but notable increase starting in 2021.
2024 - 1400 (as of August 6)
2023 - 1697
2022 - 1381
2021 - 1145
2020 - 1076
2019 - 961
2018 - 874
2017 - 1170
2016 - 1056
2015 - 1013
2014 - 1288
2013 - 2006 (top year)
2012 - 961
2011 - 1009
2010 - 751
2009 - 580
2008 - 33
Note: these numbers are JUST for slash, not "&"
Furthermore, there's not currently a good way to sort posts by just fic or just art. Since Gumroad and others have kicked NSFW art to the curb, I suspect there's been a rise of artwork posted on AO3.
I hope we'll come up with a good, commonly used tag for AO3 art soon so it'll be easier to find. It's quickly becoming the one place I can reliably find uncensored spicy artwork, though I still have to work to find it.
As of this morning (August 6, 2024) there have been 1400 Spirk posts on AO3 this year. That makes 2024 the most active year in Spirk fandom since 2013.
I know several Discords have events that will result in big post collections going live before the end of the year. There's even a slight chance those might even push 2024 into the #1 spot for most AO3 posts.
So if it feels like you're struggling to narrow down your 2024 Philon Awards nominations, it's for the best possible reason.
Last year's eligibility period (2022-08-01 to 2023-07-31) saw 1640 works posted on AO3.
This year's eligibility period (2023-08-01 to 2024-07-31) has 2252 AO3 posts, plus another 26 days left in the nomination period. That's literally 600 more posts than last year!
So get out there and rec your favorite fics and art. I promise a lot of great dishes have been missed at this year's veritable buffet of choices.

Misao 2024 HD Remaster announced for PC - Gematsu
Tumblr media
Publisher PLAYISM and developer Hitodenashi no Kuukan have announced Misao 2024 HD Remaster, a remastered version of the October 25, 2017-released horror adventure game Misao: Definitive Edition (which itself was a worldwide release of the May 26, 2011-released freeware game). It will launch for PC via Steam on August 14 for $9.99.
Here is an overview of the game, via PLAYISM:
About
Misao is a horror-adventure game in which you search for a young girl who has disappeared in a cursed school. As the protagonist, you must explore a school plagued by unnatural phenomena and uncover the truth behind what happened to Misao.
The Story
Just three months ago, a young girl went missing. Her name is Misao. She was a classmate of the player’s character. Quiet and reclusive, this plain girl was often the target of bullies. Since the day she disappeared, rumors spread throughout the school of unnatural phenomena. The children called it “Misao’s curse”… When the rumors were proven to be true, the school had already transformed into another world overrun by horrifying supernatural beings.
The Characters
The students trapped in the Other World run in fear from the supernatural beings, and end up confessing about their relationships with Misao as a result. Residents of the realm (or at least, you think they are) might also lend you a hand during your exploration…
Overcome Deadly Obstacles
The Other World is infested with aggressive monsters and death traps. Who put them here, and for what purpose…? Even you, the protagonist, are not immune to these obstacles. Making even a single wrong decision could cost you your life. Overcome them all to reach the end. Will it be an exit, or a way to quell the monsters?
Crimson Eyes
Use the Crimson Eyes to highlight places you’ve already investigated before. They can also reveal the strange creature known as Li’l Miscreant, who hides somewhere in the otherworldly school…
