August 2024 Reading Wrap Up
I can't believe we're at the end of August already, it feels like I was just writing the July wrap up. Despite that, August was a very good reading month, and was a good recovery for me from how difficult July was. I read six books, and I was able to read some books that have been on my tbr for 4+ years. Overall, I didn't read a large quantity of books, but I read some very good quality books!
1 & 2. Chrestomanci Chronicles volume 1 by Diana Wynne Jones: Charmed Life and The Lives of Christopher Chant. 4/5 stars. In my quest to read more DWJ, I finally picked up this series since having it on my tbr since at least 2019. I read both of books on audio, and I plan to continue the series this way. I thought these were both fun children's fantasy stories, and they felt like DWJ books :)
3.Daughter of the Forest (Sevenwaters 1) by Juliet Marillier, 5/5 stars. This is another series that has been on my tbr since 2019 I believe. I've been so overdue to read this, and I really loved this. The writing was superb, and I loved the setting of Sevenwaters, and all the characters. This felt like such a well crafted and excellent book.
4.Paladin's Grace (Saint of Steel series) by T Kingfisher, 5/5 stars. I devoured this book in about 24 hours, and I loved this fantasy romance murder mystery. T Kingfisher is a favorite author, and this was all parts romance, mystery, politics, angst, as you can get. I feel like I'm addicted to these books and I can't wait to read the next ones!

6.A Memory Called Empire (Texicalaan 1) by Arkady Martine, 5/5 stars. This is a space opera that has been on my tbr since 2020, and I've been daunted by this book for years. It was a little daunting at first, but once I had a grasp of the world and culture, I really enjoyed this book. The second half was phenomenal and this checked a lot of boxes of things I like.
6. Living Resistance : An Indigenous Vision for Seeking Wholeness in Every Day by Kaitlin B Curtice. This was my nonfication for the month, and while I've been looking for something to fill the void that Braiding Sweetgrass left me in, this was enjoyable, but not quite the same. It has a good message and was a good read for this this month.

Overall, I'm happy with this month, and I read some new favorites!
September tbr (in no particular order):
Son of Shadows (Sevenwaters 2) by Juliet Marillier
Paladin's Strength (and maybe Paladin's Hope) by T Kingfisher
A Desolation Called Peace by Arkady Martine
Before They Are Hanged by Joe Abercrombie (I want to at least give this a try)
The Shadow Land by Elizabeth Kostova
Ink Blood Sister Scribe by Emma Torzs

Reading Wrap-Up (August)
Selenio, 13th September 2023 Phew. A lot has happened this past August which may be part of the reason why I’m only typing out this wrap-up almost two weeks in September. Oh well, what can you do. At least I’m writing it at all… I have been quite diligent with my reading however and because of this I have decided to split up this month’s wrap-up into two parts (so as not to create one…

August Reading Wrap up✨️

Aristotle and Dante : 3⭐️ - it was good I just felt that the pacing towards the end could have been a bit better.
Once and future witches: 3⭐️ - I had a big issue with the pacing in the first half of this book as I am not used to reading slower paced books. It really dragged for me until the last half kicked off.
That time I got drunk and saved a demon: 3⭐️ - fun and cute! An easy read. Felt a little rushed due to it being such a short book.
Yona of the dawn volume 8: 4⭐️ - one of my favourite animes so I am slowly getting myself into the manga, enjoyed it a lot!
Currently reading:
The return of the king by J.R.R. Tolkien
Yellowface by R.F Kuang
Little Thieves by Margaret Owen
20,000 leagues under the sea by Jules Verne
The thread that binds by Cedar McCloud
Dracula by Bram Stoker via Dracula Daily

• august wrapup •
I started this month in Dublin, ended it in Singapore (but am mentally planning a trip to Japan), read 14 books, made some headway writing my F1 romance, started writing a draft of something *else* that’s shiny and new (and very possibly Taylor + Sabrina inspired👀), learned the magic of thickening spray and hair oil, and exerted some self-control after being heavily influenced to buy a new work/travel bag that I don’t technically need and…did not buy it even though I really, really want to. Please clap.

August Reading Wrap-Up!
Meant to post this on the first of September but then forgot oops.
Throttled: 84/370 pages read in August. Finished reading on 8/31 on Kindle Unlimited. Finally finished my trash read and it wasn't too bad. 3/5 stars.
Just My Type: 155/341 pages read in August. Physical book finished 8/06. It did get better in the end but it was still just not good. 2.5/5 stars.
Survive the Night: 322/322 pages read in August. Audiobook finished on 8/09 with Libby. This book knocked my socks off and is one of my favorite books this year! Definitely my favorite thriller. 4.5/5 stars.
When in Rome: 327/327 pages read in August. Physical book finished on 8/21. This was such a cute romance even if it was a touch unrealistic. 4/5 stars.
The Hunting Party: 327/327 pages read in August. Audiobook finished on 8/16 with Libby. This was disappointing. The story and mystery itself were good I just disliked almost all of the characters. 3.5/5 stars.
The Guest List : 40/330 pages read in August. Audiobook borrowed through Libby. I just wasn't feeling it so I sent it back to the library. Might finish at some point. Estimating a 3/5 stars.
Sorry I Missed You: 140/350 pages read in August. Physical book. I was really excited about this book but I just wasn't that into it at this time so I'm putting it aside for now. Estimating a 3/5 stars.
Half a Soul: 151/280 pages read in August. Physical book finished 9/03. I loved this! There were a few plot holes but the story is still so good! 4.5/5 stars.
Books finished: 5 (average rating: 3.5/5 stars)
Books picked up: 8
Pages read: 1,505

the epic highs and lows of rereading your own writing to seek out parts you disliked and analyze Why you disliked them to do better in the future
#personal stuff#delete later#just finished rereading fragments [shaky thumbs up]#been struggling with writing so what is there to do but reread my own stuff to learn from my mistakes 👍#man you can REALLY tell where i started getting crunched for time by a self-imposed deadline. like the quality is staggering#i could have stopped this fic at april and been content with it fr...#like if i had shuffled around some stuff in the later chapters to appear a little earlier. and actually had april be the resolution#might've gone a bit better. but alas.#anyway. the second half of the fic is rough for sure. but the early chapters. those kick ass. genuinely.#august is a good introduction!! i like the setup!!#and though i STILL clutch my head in my hands wrt september. the themes of the conversation at the end came off well#november i love you november. captures the feeling of anxiety Really well. still makes me cry whenever i reread it To This Day#the argument in december actually kinda goes hard?? i am always so shy abt writing confrontation bc it feels Bad but man it kinda kicked as#and february mwah mwah mwah. loove the atmosphere with that one. it's a little dramatic but ough. the vibes are off the charts#turns out. the bad parts of these earlier chapters were a lot smaller than i thought#and by ignoring the urge to cringe and instead looking my work in the face. i can learn from my mistakes. crazy#most of the later chapters though. don't look at me i was struggling.#trying to come up w ideas and arrange them around important dates was a fun concept but the novelty wore off#as i was like ughh but thematically this scene would work better here before this chapter...#i had suuuch a strong vision for april but i kinda stumbled with the execution as pointed out by one commenter#and that kinda put me off the chapter as a whole on rereads even after editing it. like whyyyy did i write it like that. head in hands#and it does not fit all that well after march. i think i relied a little too heavily on the timeskips for drama in both chapters#june was fine i guess but don't get me started on july. july was ass i had no idea what i was doing.#i think i wrapped up that chapter really well for what i had to work with but like. man#i don't even like Reading stuff like that why'd i write it.#what writing a chapter for the sake of posting it rather than for the sake of finishing up a fic does to you 😔#anyway yeah. i had a lot of fun rereading it but. mostly in the first half. i could stop reading at february and be content with that.#i think i took psychic damage from reading the later chapters. not bc they were bad but bc like. i remembered not having as much fun w them#and feeling stressed and crunched for time like they were a homework assignment that was due instead of a fun hobby for me#crazy. not doing that this time.

August 2023 Reading Wrap Up
I only read 5 books in August, and while I started off the month strong, finishing my summer semester of grad school + starting the fall semester really kicked my butt. I read some good books, but wish I had had more time. September is probably going to have even less reading time too :(
1.Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros (3/5 stars). This is the very popular fantasy romance of this summer. I felt very hot and cold on this book, and while there were parts I liked, there were also parts I did not like. I think I'm going to read book 2 when it comes out later this fall, since I liked the twist at the end, and I see potential growth for the series. Adult high fantasy.
2.The Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow (3/5 stars). I finally got around to reading this, and while it was enjoyable, it is by no means my new favorite thing. I do really like Harrow's writing style, but I felt like this was a little long at points. I'm very excited about Starling House later in October. Historical Fantasy.
3.Skyhunter by Marie Lu (4/5 stars). This was a good ya dystopian sci-fi/fantasy story. It reminded me a bit of Legend and it brought in some really unique worldbuilding, even though I thought it was a bit predictable at times. I plan to pick up the sequel as soon as it is released in paperback, and I'll read just about anything Marie Lu writes. YA dystopian fantasy.

4.11/22/63 by Stephen King (5/5 stars). This is the second novel I've read by King, and I was not disappointed. I had such a good time reading this doorstopper of a novel, and found the historical details, characters, and relationships to be my favorite parts. The ending of Stephen King books are never really happy, never really sad, but just hit this bittersweet spot that leaves me in a book hangover. Historical alternate history.
5.The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman (5/5 stars). This is one of the only works by Gaiman I hadn't read yet, so when I saw a copy at a used book sale, I grabbed it. Gaiman is really just one of my favorite writers of all time, and I think he's brilliant. I really liked the story and some of the themes this book touches on. Middle grade fantasy.

That's it! I unfortunately did not get around to a nonfiction this month, and I started reading The Fifth Season, but I haven't finished it yet. I hope September will be a better reading month, but I'm going to be very busy, so I sort of doubt it.
My (ambitious, but highly improbable) September tbr:
Finish The Fifth Season by NK Jeminson
Start my reread (on audio) of the Shades of Magic series by VE Schwab
Tiamat's Wrath (Expanse #8) by James SA Corey
Nonfiction
??

Potential November Reads
In This House of Brede by Rumer Godden
The Everlasting Man by G.K. Chesterton
Something by Charles Dickens
A nonfiction book
A piece of classic Russian literature
#monthly reading list#books#i've decided to make both lists because i'm in a 'obsess over all the options' mood#and this gets it out of my head#i've already mentioned brede#i plan to stick with it#i'm a couple chapters in and liking it so far#i've ordered 'everlasting man' from the library so i won't have to read my copy with horrendously small print#(after reading h.g. wells and seeing how nonsensical his view of human nature is from a christian perspective)#(i decided i needed to read chesterton's rebuttal to wells)#i've got dickens on here because despite spending october reading almost exclusively victorians#i came out of the month wanting to read some dickens#november has *strong* associations with 'great expectations' so i've got to see if some other dickens will satisfy the craving#if nothing else i got a volume of his christmas novellas out from the library and i may just have to give one a go#i need to read some nonfiction again (essays/apologetics don't count)#a top contender right now is 'the guns of august' because i found a used copy a couple months ago#and wwi is the perfect november nonfiction (oh that reminds me i should finish 'a hilltop on the marne')#and after reading victorians all month i need to read some classic literature from another country#and winter is a very russian-lit time of year#(the victober wrap up is coming btw)#(it's just that concisely summarizing these reading experiences takes a lot of time)

What were some of the books you read in August? 📖
My reading in August was an interesting experience—I DNFed a lot of books (15) and ended up unhauling 5. My reviews were very mixed, but I definitely read a couple of new favourites! I feel like I was slightly overwhelmed with how many audiobooks I had from the library, so reading was a tiny bit stressful this past month! Anyway, here are the basics:
• I read 29 books
•15 of them were physical books from my personal collection.
•My favourite read of the month was Patricia Wants to Cuddle
Here’s hoping September is a great reading month!
