About your language brainrot. I see your "Reader's writing can't match tyvat's long and flowery writing" and bring you "Tyvat isn't used to books over 50 pages long so a short story to the Reader is a whole dictionary to tyvat readers".

Seriously, have you seen how thin the books are? They don't wrote novels, they write short chapters formatted in the way really old stories are. As in, summarizing all the events down into one smooth story then adding a few quotes. Fanfiction writers are insane. They will willingly sit down and write hundreds of words at a time. To them, a proper modern day story of maybe, oh 10k words or so, would probably be like the Oddessy itself.

If we were to combine the two headcanons. It would end up as many historians being intimidated by this insanely long written scripture in the language of the forgotten.

I'm going to take this a step further and say that if the creator asked some people to proofread their things, it would establish a hiarchy of who is able to actually finish the book the creator read and who isn't.

tfe bee before realizing he had a crush just kinda. instinctively wing fluttering and hanging around starscream the few times they see each other. it's so funny bc bee isn't even conscious of it and starscream is staring at bee's wings just barely flickering back and forth and is having an intense mental argument with himself over whether bee is flirting or not

little does starscream know that, a little while in and before he realizes he has a crush, his own wings are doing the same thing

Scrap, these are way heavier than I thought they would be, a thought quickly passes in Bumblebee's processor before he's fighting his own frame for balance — his pedes stumble a few steps as he scoops up a stack of about three dozen storage-free datapads. They just got a new shipment, and Bumblebee needs to deliver these to the library before anyone searches for them.

When Bee makes his way through the corridors of their HQ, — repurposed from G.H.O.S.T., because why would they keep it around gathering dust? — he only catches a glimpse of Starscream before the mech turns to him from the lab. Upon seeing him, the flier's lip plates curve in delight.

"Bumblebee," he sings, his own servos full of datapads and hastily written notes. Wheeljack is muttering something in the lab still, but now Bumblebee's full attention is on Starscream. He seems much happier these days, but who even knows why. Though Bumblebee doubts he's pretending.

"Hi," he smiles, too, because frag if Star's grin isn't contagious. "Going somewhere?"

"I might be," Starscream's optics sparkle under this light, "Might even accompany you, as it were."

Bee readjusts his grip on the datapads slipping from his grasp. "Read me like a book, huh?"

And there it is — the subtle twitching of Starscream's wings when Bee makes a stupid joke, ones Star sometimes calls "right out of Prime's mouth", and, yeah, Bumblebee can't really argue with that. The movement of Star's wings, particularly their tips, is very hard to notice unless one's actively looking for it.

Luckily, Bumblebee is good at noticing hidden details. Comes with the job.

If he's more prone to paying attention to Starscream, more than some other mechs, he doesn't mule it over. Starscream is just one of those bots who's nice to look at. For no reason. 

Despite the Seeker's groan and wing fluttering, the smile on his faceplate doesn't leave for a second. "The energon isn't far from the mine after all."

Bumblebee has to do processor gymnastics to catch Starscream's mannerisms. "You mean "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree"?"

Starscream shrugs. "Ours is better. What's an "apple", anyway?"

"It's— you've never seen an apple before?"

"I just… haven't been outside for very long! You know I've been busy!"

"Trying to terraform Earth into Cybertron, yeah, I know, I've been there. I should take you outside more."

"…perhaps you should."

In the end, he and Bumblebee stay at the library for longer than they anticipated.

After Bumblebee drops off the new datapads, he joins Starscream at the table where he laid out all his recent research on space travel. He and Wheeljack have been trying to figure out how to restore the Cyberbridge to its original state, their now two heads working better than one.

The Autobots are clearly understaffed — at this point they should probably take in the brainy green one from the Terrans, as an intern. Starscream has the feeling they'd be rather excited about the idea.

"So, how's the tech work coming along?" Bumblebee leans on the table with a servo cupping his cheek. Starscream can't deny: it's rather cute.

"Not fast enough, if you ask me," he says with full honesty. It's pointless to keep secrets from a bot like Bumblebee: he's either going to fish them out himself, or the others share willingly. He just has that superpower.

Bee taps a digit on his cheek and hums. "I guess you can't rush these things. We all want to go back to Cybertron as soon as possible, but science takes time," the Autobot gives Starscream a dazzling grin, and Starscream's spark pumps energon two times faster. "Just gotta be patient. You can do it, Star, I know you can."

Words of affirmation don't sit right with Starscream. It has taken him years to beat into his system, — sometimes literally, — that the one making a positive comment is being pretentious or trying to snake their way into his space for benefits, to use him.

It took Bumblebee just a few weeks to make Starscream utterly blush at kindness and compliments. These days, the reaction is immediate.

So Starscream covers his hot faceplate with a servo to save at least some of his dignity. "Y-yes, of course, Wheeljack is an excellent lab partner, even if he's… eccentric at times."

"Oh, I'm sure he is," Bumblebee smirks as if he didn't just attempt to blow up Starscream's entire processor. "I, for one, am glad you're keeping him occupied. The walking "crazy scientist" cliche got me out of many tight spots, but some of those tight spots have been caused by him, so," the Autobot shrugs, and turns his attention to Starscream again. "What are you working on right now?"

Seeing as Bumblebee was the one to wonder it first, Starscream goes all out on explanations and technical details, for a brief moment forgetting Bumblebee's oblivion to it.

But it gives Starscream an opportunity to see Bee's latest change. Starscream isn't sure if he's the one causing it, but Bumblebee's wings move more frequently when he and Starscream are talking. The grounder has a soft expression on his face, optics half-shut, a smile that could almost be described as "loopy", his wings tilted to the ground. On the occasional new sentence, they flutter ever so, like the ears of a turbofox.

Neither of them draw attention to it, and Starscream tries to be extra careful not to glance at them when he sees movement behind Bee's back.

It could just be their little secret. One Starscream might not share with Bumblebee, if he's lucky. And lucky he could be.

compiled all of choromatsus handwriting that i could find bc i love him

i realize these were all made by different teams and have different sources (anime/games/webkuji/etc) but there are some similarities between them all and i think its cute. i'll try to make it easier for ppl that cannot read japanese too

(note: some of these may or may not be valid criticisms, im not a native japanese speaker but i got my bachelors in japanese. idk if this means anything to anyone im just pointing out things that im noticing and maybe it will be interesting to you. if you notice anything else interesting feel free to add)

commonalities i noticed:

sometimes will combine multiple character strokes into one (normal thing to do, i've seen some native speakers do this)

with a few exceptions (mt takao for some reason), generally neat handwriting. proper and easy to read. not too big, not too small, not over stylized, but not messy either. very choromatsu

letter in s1e24

very nice handwriting, legible and neat. this is closest to how i think i would picture his handwriting. i know that the staff across different ososan things probably don't care too deeply about keeping minute handwriting details consistent and that's why they're all gonna look different but i like this one best for him.

new years cards in s2e13

very cute, love the stupid drawing of himself. everything very nice and tidy. to me these characters look a much curlier and rounder than the ones in the letter.

for both the letter and the new years cards it looks like he was careful to properly write out all the strokes of the kanji, even for more complicated ones like 緊張 and 就職. we see in mt takao that his handwriting gets a LOT messier. i know the real reason is because it was probably different animators that did his handwriting, but i'm choosing to believe that in canon it's because both of these are more fancy/formal letters addressed to people, whereas the trip guide is just for him and his brothers and doesn't necessarily need to look nice.

also i adore his tendency to add little drawings to things, like this and the mt takao guide he's everything

trip guide from mt. takao s3e8. his handwriting here, for some reason, is exceptionally bad especially compared to everything else. he writes like a little kid and i love his shitty little drawings. he's so cute.

my teachers would always correct my kanji down to the tiniest strokes, if i wrote like this is class i would get scolded so bad. you can see him combining his strokes together for 記念撮影, this will continue for the other pictures too. cute detail imo

the 昼 in 昼食 is definitely written wrong, but the second kanji 食 might be a little nitpicky. technically that bottom part is three different strokes, not two crossed over each other

more of him combining the strokes together. i wouldn't necessarily say that's wrong, since i've seen people do that before; it's probably just a habit that happens over time. i do it in english too

HOWEVER, he did write the 日 radical in 撮影 wrong here. previously, i thought he was just combining strokes again so that it looked like three lines instead of two (note 3 and 4 are two parallel lines, he just didn't lift his pen up)

but when you look at this it's clear that he very much did write three lines this time. that's the wrong radical

anyway

another example of him writing a two stroke character with just one. again, this is fine, ive seen people write their characters like this. however it looks bad when he does it here

i love how he wrote "campfire" i love how for some reason he didn't keep the letter sizing consistent or straight. also his little campfire drawing

these next ones are maybe less canon cause they're not from the show itself

Airport Matsu

very tidy, combines a couple strokes together. both 松 (matsu) characters look like he combines the last two strokes together instead of writing them as two separate ones

and he does a similar thing with the right half of 野 in Matsuno

nostalgic moments webkuji

this one he writes every stroke and doesn't combine them and that's probably because different people worked on these and the tiny details like this don't matter to anyone but me. or you could say that he wrote a little neater in high school and started simplifying things as he got older.

Rock School

i think his handwriting looks very good here actually. idk how to describe it but i like when handwriting looks like this specific way in japanese. i've seen other people that have handwriting like this and it just looks so nice. like the characters seem to vary in size, but somehow it makes it a little easier to read imo?

like in the first bullet point (underlined in yellow), the す in 多すぎる is a little big, but like it looks nice. in the second bullet point (blue), the の in 世の中 is slightly smaller but it emphasizes the kanji on either side of it. the stroke on the side of the か characters are written a little longer than usual (red). like it just looks nice, everything is shaped really nice and whenever i see people that have this handwriting i always try to emulate it lol

this one is a bit messier than the others. the way he wrote チョロ just doesn't look as nice as the way he wrote it in airport matsu and nostalgic moments. the way the て is written is more curved compared to the others. also the 界 kanji (blue) is written in a way that looks weird to me, and kara from this same set also writes the kanji that way so i think the same person might have written all of them lol

also interesting is that he writes き differently in this one

i was told by one of my professors that you're supposed to write さ and き with the upper and lower parts disconnected when writing by hand. it's only in text that they're connected. but i've still seen some people write them in the connected way

in all the other examples, choromatsu doesn't write them connected like that, just this one.

my lovely boy and his nonsense words and lies. the handwriting here comes off as very cutesy to me, at least compared to the others. some of the ways he writes, especially any box-like shape, seems round in a way. he also connects the right half of 野 again.

overall writes very neatly, altho a lot of the kanji here seems like its very big on the top and smaller on the bottom, and a lot of the letters seem more rounded. all the other examples just feel like the writing is a bit more angular, with the exception of the new years cards.

extra: coloring book

the way he wrote his name here is messier than the other examples. i like that he added little commentary on his own coloring though ("looks good!" "the tail was black too i believe") maybe he colored this with a paintbrush????? the strokes look as if he was trying to write quickly with a brush as if it was a pen. so maybe that's why its a little messier

im watching the extensive video Brooke's Moon made about the depths of the Marauders Fandom and they commented about how in a lot of hc's and fic Remus's parents are written as terrible people & they mentioned not liking that trope and I've been thinking the same thing for so long-

ive come across quite a few fics/hc's that point Lyall and Hope as both being terrible, and idk if thats a thing bc they canonically kept Remus in a bubble or bc it will just give more weight to the Tragic Backstory™️vibes, but I just wish it wasn't as popular:(

Though to be fair, I sometimes lean toward the hc of Lyall being supportive, loving and attentive to Remus while Hope (a muggle) feels in over her head and overwhelmed at the situation she finds herself faced with and ends up becoming distant to Remus and neglectful in the emotional sense.

As someone who's a slut for hc's that add well to canon + a writer that has to get into different pov's all the time, I tend to really like this train of thought:

Lyall is overwhelmed with guilt, he of course will only blame himself and his protective, worried parental nature will only get stronger as Remus's condition heightens but Hope...

She has her only son attacked in their home right before his fifth birthday & her previously sweet, lovely life is changed literally overnight- she was making birthday party plans for him then suddenly finds herself having to discuss with her husband about her child turning into an angered wolf, who they need to lock in a room every month

She is just starting to wrap her head around her husband's world and a literal werewolf breaks into her son's- who is literally a preschooler- bedroom in the dead of the night and fucking bites him, maiming him with a permanent scar & disease that literally shatters all the dreams a mother envisions as she watches their baby grow....

She feels terrible, all she wants is to help her son and protect him from what he will now have to face but she has something close to a psychotic break in a way as she hears the sounds he makes upon his first transformations

She realizes that her five year old child has literally turned into a blood thirsty creature. She can't take it, so she checks out in a way- becomes a ghost of her former self from the trauma, stops being the loving mother she once was and creates a barrier between herself and Remus as he grows up; a little out of fear, a little out of heartbreak.

anyway thats my two cents and its sorta a half hc for when im feeling particularly angsty- overall, i like to think moony's childhood was filled with overwhelming amounts of love to counteract the situation hes faced with🥺

SylusMc characters and relationship part 1 - MC and Lilith : the consequences of misogyny

Disclaimer : I like to ramble. So everything is purely a way to analyze and talk about SylusMc. I don't claim it to be true (its more like theories/rambles), nor do I claim that this is what the devs aimed for. I just like to make everything about SylusMc and relate everything beautiful and heartbreaking to them. I just love how beautifully written LADs is, and as a Sylus main, my rambling is mostly about him and MC.

I will write this in differents parts because it is quite long and I don't see myself writting a long post. I still trying to figure out the order but for now (from what I've gathered thus far) it's : MC/Lilith - Parallel between Lilith/MC & Lucifer/Sylus + love story - I might also talk about Caleb, and might dive into Lucifer/Lilith/Adam/Eve thing but I am not sure yet (i'm just stating some things in this part) - Other deities that relates to snakes/SylusMc - Snakes/Sylus's Myth (i vaguely talk about it in this part)

So a few day ago, I was reading Sylus Memory Card "Immobilized" again and I was kinda taken aback by the serpent alusion MC made.

First of all, bc I didn’t remember it, or at least I didn't notice or paid any attention to it. Secondly, because I didn’t make anything of it.

I tried to look at the kindled and also the main story where we see the linkage. It looked like this in Immobilized

Sylus's Main story : Breakthrough - Chap 12 : Resonance's Power

I know it was meant as a metaphor. But I can't keep but thinking why did the devs purposely made her say that ? Needless to say that this kinda highlights the main theme in Sylus’s dragon myth which is Sylus and MC primal and insatiable need to devour one another. MC even asks Sylus if he knew about it since the beginning which he laughs at. I won't talk much about it though, because the myth truly deserve a proper dive which I will do later on.

I only talked about snakes as Sylus, in my fallen angel theory and especially bc of the links between snakes/dragon. But I never thought to talk about it as MC.

And I guess I could end it here and say that it's because after Sylus died, MC became a dragon too. But tbh, this isn't the first thing that came to my mind.

I am a BIG BIG fallen angel Sylus lover. From my previous theories, I kinda made a parallel between Caleb and Sylus from this infold official commission :

I used the "theory" that MC’s character is influenced (at some extend) by the Lis she’s with. It's more like, the more the Lis and Mc spend time together, the more they align with one another. So Caleb’s MC could be considered as Eve and Sylus’s MC as Lilith. Lilith animal symbols are supposedly the cat, the owl and the serpent amongst other things. So I made some researches that I think could also be used as a beautiful metaphor for MC.

So Lilith was supposedly created before Eve (some people say she's Eve). Contrary to Eve, Lilith wasn’t created from Adam’s ribs but from dust and earth like him. She was supposed to be Adam’s wife but she didn't want to obey or submit to him. She wanted her independance (👀) and be treated equally but Adam wasn’t really happy about it (👀).

It kinda reminded me of the core difference between how Caleb interacts with MC and how Sylus does. Caleb wants to keep MC close and not let her go. He wants to be forever her protector. He feels the need to watch and protect her, even if it means doing things against her will, like locking her up. He is ready to built anything to keep her "safe" (more like trapped) and even proposes to make a "garden" for her inside a maze. This always reminded me about the garden of Eden, bc who thinks about making a garden for someone when they want to "hold" them against their will ? I will make a part where I will dive more into Adam/Eve/Lucifer/Lilith. I'm just leaving some crumbs for now that I will pick on later.

Caleb's Main Story : Night Unending - Chapter 9 : Captive Bird

Sylus on the other hand, lets MC roam free and chose for herself. He knows she is strong and capable and able to make her own decisions. He WANTS her to make her own choices, even if it means he needs to step out. He lets her enough space to consider things and reflect on them, but will never hesistate to help her if needed. So this is with this in mind that I made my researches.

Lilith was what we could call (i guess ?) the first "feminist" women ever known. She was born "equally" to Adam and so wanted and demanded the same treatment as him. She stood up for herself and fought against the misogynistic "place" she was supposed to have alongside Adam; being his wife and answering accordingly to his needs. But Adam and G-d were not really happy about it and so upon not being heard, she went against them and defied what was expected of her.

After she fled/been chased from the Garden, people started to mischaracterize her and paint her as some sort of devil or a vampire, while to some she was a goddess. She was supposedly an evil being that only knew how to seduce, manipulate and terrorize. She was seen as the cause of new born’s death, a baby stealer, a seductress (she was often described as a succubi) who slept with men and was also was responsible for men's erotic dreams. She supposedly stole Adam's seed to made baby demons/nephilims and even drank baby's blood to rebel against Adam. She was also known to brink sickness, death and destruction.

Who is Lilith ?

As Lilith, we see MC time and time again defy what is expected of her as a woman. She was also part of many misogynistic rituals that plagued women for years (being used as sacrifice in GoT, being designated as a sorceress and put on death road in AS and thus meeting Sylus).

But this is not the only thing that I thought could go well with MC. And at some point I don’t think it was the writers intentions, MC is so real written as a real feminist character that tries to survive a society were she is not supposed to thrive that I can’t help myself and make those connections. And I love the devs for that bc it shows how well thought-out everything is and how much their pour their heart out into creating.

Lilith was so badly described and hated for being a woman, that MC suffering from the same treatment (in game and out game) doesn’t shock me but it does sadden me. And upon searching what Lilith is symbolized by, I stumbled upon this. Lilith was said and described as representing chaos, seduction and ungodliness. And OF COURSE I’m still finding a way to link this to MC.

Who was Lilith ? And Why Is Her Story So Important ?

At the end of Sylus’s myth, MC was judged for fifteen crimes but only three were thoroughly described. First crime could be link to Lilith’s ungodliness, second crime to seduction and the third crime to chaos.

Let me explain.

Ungodliness : Not accepting God or a particular religion doctrine, that goes against God and sins.

-> MC worships evil and desire : it is one of God's first command "Thou shalt have no other Gods before me" (Exodus 20:3)

-> Shows no repetance : repentance is showing regret about your sins and accepting to change which could lead you to being "saved". Instead of mending with the rules and called out upon owning a dragon lamp and not destroying it, instead of finding a way to repent for what she was wrongly judged for, MC decided to free the dragon and take revenge on everyone (as she should).

-> Corruption : "One whose heart is corrupt does not prosper" (Proverb 17:20)

Seduction : temptation, something that seduces, attracts or charms, in a sexual context it means to entice someone in sexual intercourse, Bible meaning is literally "to lead astray"

-> Consorting with a Fiend : by freeing Sylus, MC already associated with him and thoughout the myth we see MC slowly becoming his companion and his other half/soulmate to lately becoming "his kind"

-> Bearing its mark + tainting your very body with corruption : shows MC's acceptance of Sylus "influence", bounds him to him, being marked shows being "owned" by and it can implies that you had more than friendly connection with someone

Chaos : state of disorder and confusion with no order, also could mean chams/abyss

-> Plundering wealth and embracing insatiable greed : Sylus and MC went for raids and randering the Judicator's army to helpless soldiers

-> Action stepped in corruption : she does that out of revenge and desire (which kept being fed by Sylus indulging her) and she uses Sylus strength and power too

Who was Lilith ? And Why Is Her Story So Important ?

I don't think the dev took this from Lilith and I genuily don't think they went as far as I went. BUT to me, it's important to note how radicalized women are pointed out, mocked, judge and killed for just speaking out or wanting to be treated like humans too. And mind you, for both MC and Lilith, the one that were against them the most and whose voices were the loudest were men.

And to me, this adds more meaning when in Chaotic Velocity, Sylus describes MC as "chaotic, unique, and beautiful".

Instead of being a bringer of chaos or chaos personified, she is just part of it (and nowadays, being chaotic is kinda used as term of "endearment" or as being confusedly funny). Sylus embraces everything MC's has to offer. He loves her at her most unrestricted disordered, passionate, spontenuous, creative, unpredictable, wild state. Not once, bringing her down or looking down at her for it. Even if he is more methodical. Like for someone like Sylus who always plans things through and always makes sure to be steps ahead, MC can be quite a lot to deal with. But no, he lets ger roam free and embrace herself while he takes care of the rest.

Instead of being ungodly, she is unique bc she doesn’t fit into a case or let herself be shaped by others or rules. She stands firm on her belief and won't be easily swoop by people's influence or power, only if she deems it worthy or not dangerous to her and what she stands for. She follows rules while still maintining sort some of criticism towards it and won't hesitate to challenge and question things. And I also thing, he said that because he feels the need to remind her, that she is that special to him.

Instead of being a seductress or just an object of seduction (i guess was an other way for them to call her a whore) she is beautiful. Sylus never one reduced MC to a sexual object. She is an attractive women physically AND mentally wise and a capable women. He always emphasizes it and let MC knows that she means more to him than just her body.

And maybe devs didn’t thought this that far, but I will stretch this shit out to point out how much feminism and women empowerment IS a main SylusMc subject and pillar. NOT TO SAY THAT IT DOESN’T HAPPEN WITH THE OTHER GUYS. But Sylus has a special to my heart. Misogynistic and sickass ideas are not only just OOC when it comes to Sylus, but not even viable near that wonderful man.

So (and I'm sorry if this is too long lol), I'll tell you some of my fav things about ATIMY! I'd love for you to continue the story, but as a writer, I understand the need to pause and re-think if its really what you want —specially when one feels like you do rn 🫂

1. I absolutely, and I cannot describe this enough, the background and personality of Reader. She's raw, and I honestly think that's the best word I can describe this story with. It's my favourite thing about it too! Reader is so incredibly emotional to read, her anxiousness is palpable and it's strangely soothing to go through. I see pieces of myself reflected in her, but its written so smoothly and realistically, as one would talk to themselves, that the anxiety portrayed by her ends up soothing mine in a way lmao

2. I cannot stress this enough too, but MINNIE!! That bundle of joy was something I didn't know I needed, but I craved ever since I discovered. The idea of Matt being a father is so surprising, and new, and exciting! I remember reading chapters where both Foggy and Matt pondered over the idea —they were so right to think it'd lead Matt to better. You found a way of making a plot device —the classic tough man protecting himself more finally, because of his girls — so pure and wholesome in Minnie, and I love her character so much I now see her in everuy bubbly toddler on the market 💞

3. And most of all, and because I've never written an ask before so idk how long this can be —the clear thought and love to the plit you've poured into it. I'm tired of people writing Matt or any character purely because he's...idk, hot? I've never found such a complex and beautiful story about him like yours. It nexes romance, but also the giddiness of bonding with your child, AND it's written through various POV's that connect MANY arcs to the story? This is a GEM, and I find myself expecting far more than just Reader's and Matt's interactions. I'm excited reading Minnie's chapter, or where the Sokovian Accords arc is going to lead us to. Orrr, the risks of Minnie and her powers, already different from Matt's 👀

You may've noticed by now English isn't my first language haha. I'm sorry if I didn't get to explain myself clearly. But the point is, I'm sorry for not showing the love more, in name of everyone.

"Yeah…" Of course it is..Buck looks up at his ceiling again, cursing the damn universe and its awful sense of humor. He's sure its laughing at him at this point. "Why? D-Did you mean to call someone else?"

or: Buck's date cancels but he has already made the restaurant reservation, so he decides to call Hen and ask if she'd like to take Karen there. He dials the wrong number. It all works in the end.

what fandoms do you write in?

currently revisiting my daryl/beth (twd) fixation, as well as getting some of my eddie/chrissy (st) squared away.

i started way back when with lily/james (hp), dabbled with some other ships therein, then moved on to jon/sansa and theon/sansa (got). i've also played with katniss/haymitch (thg) and alina/the darkling (sab), and some crossover crackships.

so, y'know. it's really become a "whatever i feel like" thing, which is probably what fanfic should be, anyway.

what is your greatest achievement this year?

finally wrapping my head around the fact that this is all for fun, removing myself from the fandom arena of it all, and just writing what i want to write and leaving it there. this foundation has always been there, but i've definitely lost sight of it so many times over the years; now, though, i've settled into it.

what are your top three fics you've written this year?

what comes next, hey, bust a move : the revamped and in-progress bethyl/boondock saints-inspired au

wish he would get over you : the eddissy/jason pov that i at last updated, and god willing (or not willing, even, this isn't any of his business) i will finish it—

that was it for this year! i've been focusing more and more on original stuff, but i think having a couple fanfic side-projects now will do me some good. i'm finding the balance.

what was your biggest pit of despair moment?

i don't think anything? not in relation to fanfic, at least, if only because i wasn't doing much of it during this rotation 'round the sun. but in general i think any creative pursuit comes with its highs and lows, and learning how to ride those waves is part of getting better at your art.

what have you learned?

how to ride those aforementioned waves, and letting them be fun.

did you beta any fics? any faves you want to shout out?

not this year! my day job is, for all intents and purposes, beta-ing. if someone asks, though, i'm usually up for it!

what three fics have you read this year that you love?

mostly i've been rereading old loves, BUT i did at last stumble across algorithm love song by @littlelindentree. 10/10 instant classic comfort fic.

what ideas are percolating for next year?

nothing fresh and hip, i'm afraid! with new and good things happening with my original stuff, fanfic is officially my little hobby de-stressor (and about goddamn time, too). once i wrap up some eddissy, i'll focus on the bethyl bds fic and whatever one-shots hit.

there are other wips i'd like to finish, but the truth is they're not a priority right now; i'll work on them if/when the mood strikes. some of them might need a full redo if i pick them up again, but we'll cross that bridge… at some point, probably.

If you're up for sharing more writing tips, how can I tell if what I've written is actually any good? With writing I get stuck in a cycle of feeling like I'm the next Shakespeare while writing but then I'll look over my work a few days later and absolutely hate everything and think it's the most cringe shit ever, then I'll leave it a bit longer and think eh it's not as bad as I thought but still not great and so on. I feel like being forced to write for a grade during school and having everything be marked and assessed and assigned a particular value has robbed me of the ability to critically analyse my own work in a way that's objective and accurate but also fair and realistic. I can analyse other peoples' stuff till the cows come home but I lose all rational thought when it comes to my own stuff

Adding onto that, how do I get to the point where I can stop looking back at my old work and hating everything and wanting to delete it all? Realistically I know finding fault with my old stuff is good bc it means I've grown and improved from where I once was etc but at the same time I wanna enjoy stuff I've made in the past without cringing every time I read it

Hey there Nony, I wanted to let this one percolate a little bit before answering because I've been where you are. And it's a rough time for sure. But aside from my own experiences, I also wanted to get the opinions of some of my writerly friends in the fandom, too, since everyone is a little font of wisdom in their own right.

So I'm going to share their advice alongside my own, because this is kind of a complicated string of questions you're asking. Long post ahead!

@paraparadigm says to Keep Writing: "Write more. Write so much (and so many different things) that eventually the sheer volume bulldozes over self-devouring ego, comparison twitches, or feeling lost, because you don't yet know your own baseline. Coupled with "read more, read everything, read things you enjoy and things you don't, read for the craft as much as the entertainment." And: "I'd add that when revisiting old writing, it's helpful for me to differentiate between "ew the writing is not as technically solid as it is now" and "ah that's interesting, I guess that's where I was at then, emotionally and psychologically". Old writing is also a sort of archaeological record of your younger self, and that can, in fact, be a bit itchy to revisit, so learning to cherish that without passing judgement can be really helpful. I try to treat it like those little marks one puts on the door jamb to track a kid's height."

@mareenavee says "Part of it is writing more, as Para said and I will always second that. Another part is, honestly, the hardest part. It's to try very hard to get out of the habit of negative self-talk.... There's so much work involved with this but normalizing being proud of your work and having some grace with yourself is part of that answer."

@archangelsunited says "Early on, instead of going “this has to be a masterpiece” I would tell myself my only job was to tell a story. I couldn’t tell a story if I was deleting it. Also, talking about your work helps. The less ashamed I was of my writing, the more people wanted to read it. There is a need to hide your work, and that can lead to a downward spiral all its own. And, 90% of the time, you have to suck at something to learn to be good at something. The work you already wrote shouldn’t be the sum of all your skill, it should be one of those measuring sticks for the moment. Despite previous thought, you won’t be stuck at the same level forever."

@polypolymorph says "In addition to accumulating experience via reading and writing, you also have to be willing to reinvent the wheel. Unfortunately the Process™️ is unique to everyone, and even when you are deliberately mimicking a voice as, say, a ghost writer, you can't expect that 2+2=4 for you. Your process might look more like a Lotka-Volterra equation for the same type of work and that's okay. Trial and error is the best way to figure out what advice actually works for you--and if it doesn't, it doesn't mean you're wrong. Don't get stuck on pop writing advice like a sad roomba does on an upturned rug. Learn when to throw it out."

So there's some advice from some other excellent writers! I hope you've been able to find some value in their advice, because it certainly kicked me in the pants a few times.

As for me, I think, having been where you are, my biggest piece of advice is: Find joy in the craft. Get curious instead of critical. An artist shouldn't down themselves over a rough sketch when they're working out a drawing, so why would a writer do such a thing? Everything you write is practice. Everything you make has value because it builds up to the next thing you make.

At the end of the day, you are the only one who is capable of telling the stories that are in your head. This fact alone gives whatever you put onto paper value, regardless of quality. You are creating magic, in the most literal sense! Creating something out of nothing, conjuring images into someone else's mind from hundreds of thousands of miles away, transcending space and time. It's amazing!

Lastly, my final piece of advice is to just write for fun. Write things nobody else will ever see just because you wanted to get words onto paper. You have to unlearn what was drilled into you in school. You are more than a content creation machine. You are an artist, a wordsmith. And just know that there will never be a day when you look at your own work and say "That's it, I have achieved perfection."

Writing is a life-long journey. Just enjoy the ride!

if you're chill w graphic cannibalism, i definitely recommend before i begin to enjoy the metallic taste by @flowingredscale. i loveee the descriptions, so well written

on the opposite side, katawaredoki by @sanguineerose is very soft and lovely. feels like warm sun coming through the window. i've also been keeping up with their multichapter fic you give me so many butterflies. cat sukuna, down bad yuuji, parental stsg...love.

about the mugs by @xx-juju is one of my all time favs too its so skjfgdj

and finally, the classic here and where you are by cityboys. genuinely if i'm feeling very pent up and just need to force myself to let it out, i read this. gets me every single time.

in terms of my writing process i can identify a pretty solid pattern at this point.

get new idea. usually comes to me as a vision from the gods

run to discord to tell the bestie @melloneah about my new idea. actually for a while i was very secretive abt my ideas/writing process but now i share a lot of my new thoughts w them and its vital to my creative process

outline the fic. ik some ppl just write w their heart but i Cannot. sometimes things get added as i'm writing or they shift around, but i think it helps w keeping things connected and well-paced if i know ahead of time what will happen.

just start writing. i always write in chronological order bc it also helps w keeping things connected and well-paced, especially if i end up changing something as i write

obligatory panic stage. this is actually a new thing for me where im like. done w my fic and i'm getting ready to share it and then all of a sudden i freak out and end up postponing posting it. very frustrating and i hate it

editing/proofreading. i used to edit like. minimum of 3 times before posting but idk recently i've been doing this less. my main proofreading/editing is right before i post the fic/chapter. i find that if i do it at any other point im mostly just skimming and not paying attention. i need the urgency of "okay this is the final version"

I really really really love Such Terrible Tales, it's one of my favorite fanfictions of all time!! I was wondering how you write a "period piece" so well with all the terminology, dialog, and flow of the work feeling so reminiscent of 19th-20th century novels! (It still has its roots and humor in the modern era, but you get me.) Do you do a lot of research and editing before you publish a chapter or does it just flow naturally for you? Did you read a ton of Jane Austen and bodice rippers before penning the Jackdaw? Have you you plotted out Such Terrible Tales in full before writing or do you just fly by the seat of your pants (or do you do a mix of both)? Sorry if this is nosy, I'm just so curious and invested and I'm looking into writing fanfictions that captures a similar feeling myself ^q^

genuinely one of the reasons I started writing STT in the first place was because I was on a kick of reading stuff that takes place in that general era (again, what the actual era is remains unclear). A few people have pointed out the Jane Austen of it all, and I think when I was in the middle of reading an austen novel you can tell because of the language in those chapters. basically, I don't know if this is true of everyone, but I tend to lean into the style of whatever I'm reading at the time. I also think it helps, if you like audiobooks, to listen to audiobooks in the style you want to write in! Especially with older works, audiobook narrators are really good at getting the flow and cadence of the language across, and it helps get your mind flowing along and sort of "hooked in" to that style. or it does for me at least!

ALSO I do jot down a lot of notes, specifically little turns of phrase that I like! so for example, I wrote down to use the word "directly" meaning "right now" (as in, "I will read you the letter directly") and "presently" meaning "in a short time" (as in, "we're expecting his arrival presently"). Little things like moving words around too ("what have you there" rather than "what do you have there" etc) give it that sort of feel. if that makes sense. i just take a lot of notes

One tip I will give is that a little really goes a long way with old-timey language. I notice it less when listening to the audiobooks, but in older books the sentences are LOOOOOOOONG which is what makes them so hard to parse sometimes. And often in romance novels that take place in victorian or regency era they'll overdo the language to the point that it makes you roll your eyes (though I'm sure I've done that once or twice too)

ANYWAY I'M PRATTLING ON SORRY as for the plotting. I have a bare-bones skeleton that has all the larger plot twists in it, so I can make sure to foreshadow things. That being said, I think part of what's fun about a serial fic is coming up with things as you go while still having to stay true to what you've already written. One thing I will say is that it's EXTREMELY helpful to keep a couple cheat sheets: one is a timeline, which keeps track of all the events that happened in the past, when they happened, etc. The other is a list keeping track of what every character knows and when they find it out. It's saved me many times when I've forgotten who's aware of what secrets etc.

🍿 - Your top three favorite Fics atm

Not one in a fandom you're interested in, I'm afraid but:

1. Always Means Always by Salmon_I - an Untamed fic, Jiang Cheng centric with absolutely amazing characterization of each character. It's so hard to find a JC fic where he isn't either written by an anti who makes him at fault for everything or by a stan who woobiefy's the shit out of him and makes everyone else at fault. A fic written by a JC fan who doesn't shy away from pointing out JC's flaws. Or the other characters' flaws - without being an anti. Only person in this fandom I have seen pointing out that Wen Ning isn't a good person per se or that Lan Wangji's blind loyalty to Wei Wuxian is in fact a huge character flaw and not a good thing.

Also the only other person I've seen finding LWJ boring without being a total hater. Like yeah, I do find him uninteresting and wish he wasn't so in my face all the time, but I don't hate him! Everyone else is either a fan or an extreme anti. Not this author, this author has the same opinion on every Untamed character as me, which is extremely refreshing to see.

This fic, the characterizations and the character analysis in the end notes of almost every chapter has done more to clear my skin than any of the face products I tried out. 100/10, I highly recommend!

2. gravity of tempered grace by SilverStudios5140 - a Naruto founders fic. I came for the Senju bros feels and the Mito characterization but I'm staying for everything else too. The TobiIzu is just a bonus, honestly. I have a bunch of chapters to catch up with first but once I sit down to read them, it'll be impossible to stop. Despite using some fandom-specific tropes I dislike (or even hate), the fic still has me in a strong chokehold, just like this author's other Naruto time travels fic. The world-building and the characterizations are just so gripping!

3. Lonely, Dark, and Deep by nirejseki - also a Naruto founders fic. Less of a favorite fic at the moment and more of an all-time favorite fic ever since I entered the founders fandom. The Senju bro feels just hit so damn good that the MadaTobi is just second to me. The original eldritch being Hashi fic - the ending gets me every fucking time. It doesn't matter that this fic will never be finished bc with how the last chapter ends, I can just look at it as an open ending and the fact that I'll forever be left wondering makes it so much more interesting than if it had a definite ending tbh. Every time I re-read this fic, I am immediately captured in its grip.

🌶️ - A trope you’re loving right now

Rule 63. Make an M/M or M/F ship I like into F/F and I come running so fucking fast. Go and turn those guys into gals fr. Make them all gals even with just a few token guys - if the shounen writers can make their stories a dick fest with just the occasional pussy in between, then fandom can do the opposite 💖

🍾 - A character the fandom has helped you appreciate more

Depends on which fandom lol. Considering I'm in the Naruto fandom rn, the answer would be Madara. Technically, all of the founders bc I didn't care for any of them before I clicked on a MadaTobi fic out of curiosity and suddenly found interest in them. But Madara the most because I actually disliked him in the beginning lol. I didn't hate him, but I wasn't a fan. I always found his fight during the 4th war boring - nothing less interesting to me than when an op character is introduced who defeats our strongest characters without a single drop of sweat.

(This is an opinion that I still have. I just cannot be arsed to care about Madara defeating the shinobi alliance and the Gokage so easily, even tho I do like him now. That shit is fucking boring to me!)

But the MadaTobi fandom made me see that Madara is quite an intriguing character before he became ridiculously overpowered - his personality pre-Konoha, his dreams and everything that happened to drive him mad are so interesting to explore! I definitely wouldn't have gotten here without the MdTb fics.

Also, to mention a fandom you know about - Bucky. Never mind that I hate him so much these days that I can't even stand to see his face anymore, I did use to be a fan. And that's only thanks to the WinterIron fandom. I did not care about him or even think about him at all before I stumbled onto BuckyTony and realized that he's quite an interesting character to explore.

Hi, just wanted to ask a honest question because I've seen you post about it a few times and I genuinely don't understand where you're coming from when you say this. How is remake Leon a misogynist?

Most recently I saw you point out him calling Ada heartless, but I don't see how that's him being sexist. He says that in response to her telling him information on where to find Ashley, having previously told him to leave her behind (to presumably die or worse), and I don't think its misogynistic for him to make a jab at her for that. Especially because Leon's big motivation is saving people, of course he wouldn't be a huge fan of anyone telling him to intentionally leave someone to die if he's able to save them. (This is also not to say Ada's a bad person for suggesting that, I love Ada and her character but I also understand why Leon would be upset by such a thing)

If there's anything else in the remakes that I've missed you point out I'm curious to what else makes him misogynistic because I just don't see it.

Also like a sidenote I guess almost all of Leon's misogynistic lines are from original re4 but Luis also has lines like this, so I don't understand why he gets to be distinguished between versions and Leon doesn't when you talk about their characters.

But to the Luis point? I absolutely do separate og RE4 Leon and remake Leon… Like literally my entire POINT is that no, remake Leon is still sexist, just differently, and here is why… I really don't understand how you came to this conclusion lmao.

The main idea is, Capcom thinks they've written out Leon's misogyny; but because Capcom itself is a very bigoted company, they perpetrate misogyny in everything they make and they don't even realise it! They genuinely think the way they wrote remake Leon absolves him from the misogyny when it doesn't, it just re-contextualises it in a way that Capcom deems palatable. They still see Ada as an extension of Leon! They still see Ada's worth revolving solely around how Leon feels in response to her actions. It's ridiculous. And the way Leon is written to treat her, the lines he's given towards her, reflect this attitude, and becomes misogynistic when he treats a male character who has done worse than Ada right in front of Leon with respect and empathy.

YES uhhmm. i'll just give a few brief summaries of some different dynamics from different stories:

-nix and ronnie in grievance have maybe one of my favorite.. things? going on that i've ever written. they never really got along (just a difference in personalities, nix is pretty loud and can sometimes be abrasive and ronnie is very quiet and reserved) and were prone to disagreements, which only got worse when ronnie started hanging out with nix's best friend a LOT without any explanation that nix knew of. at this point each of them are pretty vocal about their dislike of each other- nix has a very public drunk outburst at ronnie and ronnie isn't that afraid to be kind of a dick in turn though definitely less so than nix was being. and so when nix starts getting manipulated into thinking murder is a good idea.. im sure you can imagine how that goes. i don't want to spoil everything (its so hard not to bc i love these two so much) but i DO have gay art of them on my art blog already so its not like that part's a secret or anything LOL they're not romantically involved in grievance but they are Later :) do you ever hate a guy so much you get convinced you need to kill him and then like a thousand years later you realize it was all a big misunderstanding and you actually have a lot in common and also you have feelings for each other. maybe you had feelings for each other earlier than that but you'll never know

-similarly in grievance and similarly i can't say much because it's heavy spoilers, but while nix and iridectomy never directly interact im always thinking about the fact that they are subtextually siblings. iridectomy's father (the story's antagonist) becomes nix's (horrible) adoptive (terrible) father way after iridectomy's life is over and nix is. kind of expected to be everything they were while being forced to do terrible things for his father figure? he never knew them but he knew this idea of them that he's meant to live up to but in that regard he's a failure. he's too different and he has too many issues and he's not Easy and he's not a Child. he never knew them but they're the entire reason he even exists and also the entire reason everything goes so wrong for him and Also they were just a kid who never deserved what happened. he never knew them but he's their big brother whether he wants to be or not.

-on a lighter note.. i have to mention my starbtesla. they're my FAVORITE dynamic of all time and i AM biased. teslacoil (@apotheoseity's character if i dont make that clear often enough) is captain starburst's husband and they met when starb got kidnapped by the villain organization that tesla works for??? and then starb got kicked out of being kidnapped for being too gay with the lab assistant. they're in love a sickening amount and i really like the way they are together, starb is this really thoughtful and caring excitable hero and tesla has about 5 thoughts a day and 4 of them are about starb and he talks and acts like a cartoon character from a fever dream. sometime in the future they have two kids named skittles and pudding and they're like. exactly the same as they always have been they're just these two kids' weird gay parents where one of them is a famous superhero and the other one eats metal for fun. i feel like i'm not explaining this well but they're adorable together i promise

-circling back around to nix and ronnie, there's AUs of them in my other setting creature feature where like. i don't even know why i made them the way they are but it's constantly entertaining to me. in that au nix (named pigeon here) was turned into a creature called a mimic which are goo monsters that kill and eat people and underneath his old skin he's That. contrail is the first person he ever killed and he got so mad he came back as a ghost to haunt pigeon. so they're both kind of stuck together and they hate each other but they're? kind of gay? they're kind of really gay and obsessed with each other. pigeon constantly just wants to annoy and insult contrail and contrail literally exists to torture him and somehow they're gay about that. they make any social situation terrible because they're always "arguing" about something (contrail is actually arguing, pigeon is just trying to piss him off) and it's awful they're awful. and so funny to me

i have a lot more than this these are just the ones i find the most interesting at this current moment... this also doesn't include characters that aren't mine other than teslacoil just bc i love him too much. theo if you see this and wanna add character dynamics of ours you enjoy feel free LOL i might come back and add more myself eventually too

Kenshi Yonezu @ Radio City Music Hall 🔩❣️🚧

i imagine everyone who read kenshi yonezu's latest tweet felt a similar rush of emotion. but. oh 🥹 oh my goodness. you know when you can just tell that something is written straight from the heart? it quite literally had me tearing up over breakfast the other day. maybe it's bc i spent the last week entrenched in art in a way that i haven't really experienced since school. but between all the galleries & exhibitions & guided tours & live shows, i was reminded how art builds bridges of real, genuine human connection unlike anything else. which made his message hit all that much harder, i think. it felt like he was saying 'i really see you guys.' when honestly, his music has made me feel seen all along. and idk i'm just so glad he enjoyed the tour & that maybe he felt seen too

but yes :) i'm home at last & things have stilled enough that i can finally write about The Grand East Coast 'Junket' of 2025. everything about it still feels so surreal ! i keep pinching myself so that it'll really sink in that i saw kenshi yonezu perform live

the day of the show i'd planned to stop by rough trade, but somehow they closed shop early, so i got in line instead. and as luck would have it, that worked out perfectly, bc i ended up right next to the video truck !! a ripple broke through the crowd & everyone got so excited when it pulled up & started playing snippets of concert footage

and speaking of the crowd ! what a fantastic turnout !! stands to reason that there would be tons of people, seeing as he SOLD OUT (!) 'the largest indoor theater in the world' 🙌 but wow !! completely blown away too by the number of people wearing merch from almost every era! even saw a few in cosplay for donut hole! i want to emphasize here that the venue had at least 3 merch lines (possibly 4?) that wrapped all the way around both floors, downstairs to upstairs. pretty sure i stood in the merch line longer than the one outside aslkdflsfjlkj. truly incredible. i got one of the reversible towels (which will soon be hanging on my bedroom wall across from my radwimps one). in both lines i encountered the sweetest fan ever who had personally made hundreds if not thousands of photo cards & buttons & handed them out to everyone! for free! for no other reason than to spread joy 🥺 you can see the ones she gave me in the bottom left photo

after that it was time 😈 by about 8:15ish most people had settled into their seats. but as soon as kenshi yonezu & the band came out on to the stage, every single person in the theater launched up & on to their feet! he began with red out (just like the album!) & from the energy in that song alone - the reaction it got - you could immediately tell that the night was gonna be something special. so many songs that i've loved for years were on the setlist! 感電！ゆめうつつ！LOSER ! アイネクライネ！still can't believe he played flamingo !!!!! that i heard m87 in all its glory! the visuals & set design were fucking gorgeous throughout the entire show, but that blue-green lighting will stay with me forever. when the first few notes of lemon played right after that, there was a collective gasp from the audience & a kind of reverie as everyone sang together & watched the dancers lift & lower the lights. btw the dancers !!!! were so good !!!!! the choreography & wardrobe changes between each song really added to the mood & atmosphere of the performance !

also gotta say i've rarely, if ever, gotten chills like those during 海の幽霊. i stood there in complete awe, every hair on end, a sensation akin to the moment just before lightning strikes. the brilliant animation & the power in his voice as he angled towards the floor? god. i wish i could relive that again & again. same goes for kick back! the energy kept ramping up & up!!! especially when kenshi yonezu did his signature stunt of singing directly into one of the cameras & pointing it at the crowd. the 2 girls on my right & i were having the time of our lives, taking every opportunity to scream as loud as possible 努力 未来, A BEAUTIFUL STAR !!!!!!!!! 🌟

here & there throughout the show, kenshi yonezu would comment on the stage & how excited he was to be in new york (as it was only his 2nd time in the states). he paused & repeated 'すごい’ a few times, like he was at a loss for words, which made everyone laugh. bc i'm sure we could all understand. how else do you sum up such a magnificent experience? at one point the guitarist (who i've seen a lot of people refer to as naka-chan) took over. and. it. was. so great. he introduced all of the band members as 'amazing,' 'perfect,' etc & acted as though he was caught in slower spacetime?? idk but i loved every minute of it

the show closed out with the 2 newest singles, bow and arrow & plazma (which i was really hoping he would play !) followed by lost corner & おはよう, again just like on the album. おはよう actually played after the band had already exited the stage & the credits rolled. it was right at the end that i felt the full force of what had just transpired. just before the encore, during がらくた, i definitely cried a little bit. but those last 2 songs? ohhhhhh. thinking about all the things it had taken to get there. how wonderful the show was. living to lose. i'd come across a copy of 'never let me go' 2 days before i was set to leave & took the plunge & started reading it on this trip. so my entire understanding of the album was beginning to evolve & shift with new appreciation. i sat across from the venue - once the show was done - on the edge of this beautiful, lit fountain & let the night & all the emotion wash over me in a way i'll never forget

more than just his music & the themes of this album/tour, i'm really so grateful that he played here & hope he comes back soon! 💗
