if you ever feel unhappy with something you've made, whether it be a fic, a drawing, a song, a video, or anything
just remember that, as long as you took the time to make it and put it out there
it was worth it
it could be seen by 10 people or 10 thousand people
the only thing that matters is you made the thing you wanted to make
it doesn't have to be perfect or better than others or even very good to begin with
the more creative endevors that are put into the world, the better
it's good that you made it

I'm in the process of developing my first ever game! Visual novel I believe so far at least is my goal. This is a rough sketch and animation for how I'd like for it to look.
This game is called "Haunted in a Limbo" and it's about this ghost trying to rediscover their past and identity in a limbo world of weirdness! The wish to capture that "Fran Bow" feel in this game.
This game is based off an unfinished poem i wrote ngl.. This game will probably be released free on itchio since im a newbie sooo yeahhh

Currently working on a visual novel game, for right now I only have the ideas for characters and the setting. I want the setting to be in a college, sort of like how Kakegurui's setting is laid out. As for the characters, they are designed based on their major and the practicality of the outfit within that major and regular everyday functionality so you can still tell exactly what their majoring in.
If anyone has any ideas for other settings/characters(their majors) I could add in, let me know. Ima start posting about the game as I slowly develop the ideas for it!! :DD

God it's past 9pm bur like genuinely trying to figure out how to like go about game development cause I have a cool visual novel idea, but i also have nothing story wise written down nor any idea of how to translate the story to a game format or any idea of if a visual novel is even the best media to tell the story but I have such a big cool idea for it and this story has been rotating in my head for a year now but I've never developed a game before and it's like how or where do I even start ya know??? Tbh my adhd brainwaves might give me that random late night burst of energy to start on actually writting it eventually later tonight maybe...
#pankakes rambles#beginner game dev#and its also like how do I go about marketing a game and stuff???

Beginner game dev culture is:
-hating game development
-hating coding
-tutorials
-why won't my code work????
-more tutorials
-not knowing what you're doing
-experimenting
-finally getting something to work and not knowing how you did it
-finding out the problem you've been trying to fix for HOURS had a really simple solution
-experiencing ecstasy when something actually works
-wondering how tf other devs make such amazing games when your hours of work only culminate in a hot mess
-having lots of great ideas and no clue how to implement them

THE START TO MY NEWEST PROJECT
So I've recently had my future rattled a little bit. I won't go into details but the tldr is I suddenly have a lot of time on my hands and not a lot to do with it. Coincidentally, I also bought rpg maker MZ some time ago, and I had maybe an hour of use. So I figured I'd try and make a game, cause worst case scenarios are nobody seeing it or someone playing it and being like "I don't like this". My idea is basically is basically to do a sort of role reversal with the protagonists. They're all escaped princesses going to rescue their would be hero and saving him. They do typical protagonist stuff in the interim, finding magic items/artifacts and fighting monsters. That sort of thing has probably been done before to some extent (hell, it might even be common), but I like it and I wanna give it a shot.
First thing I did after deciding to actually go through with this was to get some assets. I wanted it to look like some older rpgs that you'd find on a gameboy (My zoomer brain doesn't really know the term, but retro is probably a good enough descriptor). I found some assets on itch by The Mighty palm (https://themightypalm.itch.io/). I'll probably still make my own art, but this def helps to actually put it all together.
I really like this princess sprite, I think I'll use her for the protagonist
I think she looks like a Katja personally. Second thing on the list was some music, and I found some stock music that works okay but I think it'd be fun to make some myself. If anyone has any recommendations for a beginner friendly composing software, that'd be sick and I'd love to hear it. Something else kind of important is the effects from spells and such. I'm gonna see what I can do as far as making my own, probably using piskel or smth since it's fairly simple and free. That'll probably be the easiest thing since rpg maker doesn't really require programming (part of the reason I got it said eons ago). I'm also probably gonna need to draw the title screen and maybe some battlebacks as well, but that's it's own beast and for now I'll just use what rmmz has or find some place holder assets.
Aside from that, I don't really know what else to say. This is my first time doing anything like this and I don't really know how to end this. If you guys have tips or recommendations, please tell me. Until then, buh bye!

WOOOOOOO MORE CRYPTOGRAPHY STUFF
So, while thinking about how the game would play, I realized that there would be a lot of moments of silence and not much going on, which I felt might not be super fun.
Soooooo, I decided, why not make a little computer companion for the player character!
Say hello to... the still unnamed jackalope companion fella.
My plan is for him to be localized on the player character's computer, and he'll talk to you during levels, like reminding you of your objective or saying if he thinks there is a secret nearby.
I also plan for him to make comments about the pictures you take, just to add a bit of flavor to it! He'll also let you know when you have new emails (missions), congratulate you on achievements, and all sorts of stuff I'll probably come up with on the fly!
As you can see, I was partially inspired by Rambley from Indigo Park for have a "little creature companion", but I wanted our little jackalope friend to have a more supporting role as opposed to Rambley's more guide focused role.
Let me know what you think and if you have any ideas for a name! I wanted to avoid anything too on the nose like "Jack" or "Jackie", just because I wanted it to be a bit more creative, y'know?
I hope y'all don't mind me talking about Cryptography. Even if I'm only doing concept art and stuff, I still really like sharing what I'm doing! It's fun to get feedback and just let people in on passion projects.
Anyway, I'll stop rambling now! Thanks for reading!

I have an idea for a game and have already started mapping and planning parts out.
To cut it short, I plan for the game to be a pixel styled game (think Stardew valley or Terraria??) that follows an autistic person (the player) through a series of days, where the player irl can relate to, or learn about how an autistic individual may experience the world and basic day to day tasks.
The inspo came from the game 'Tell Me Why' (which I heavily relate to as a trans man myself) but discussion sparked when me and a friend mentioned how cool it would be to have a game of a similar concept, but relevant to autistic people.
I have experience with coding (to a limited extent? I can use Python and make text based games but that's not exactly helpful for a graphics based game lol) Scratch seems to be okay but doesn't really do what I need it to do.
I'm wondering if anyone has any recs for what I might be able to use to code the game/create sprites, or just any useful tips for starting out in game dev? (PS: If anyone is interested in actually helping with the game then I'm fully open to that too! It's currently just me working on this but I don't mind other people joining!) (ALSO POSTED ON MY REDDIT!)

believe it or not i've actually been working on something else than just dnd hhh
finally finished/redrew the simple ref for deluge's cast, still not fully happy (not really comfortable with digital still) but i know i'll improve while practicing drawing all the sprites and background etc
not-art-updates for deluge too: i've built the basic outline in renpy for this, so i just need to add all the fancy writing and dialogue hhh

Woodcarver dev log 1
I decided I would attempt to remake A passion project of mine from high school that I never got to complete.
That Project, being Woodcarver
Some brief history about the original version of WoodCraver
It was going to be Is a text adventure game with elements of body horror and cosmic horror
With a mechanic involving carving items needed to solve puzzles out of a wooden blocks. And then those items would manifest.
So essentially if the idea was If say there was a part of the game where you got trapped in a room with no doors
You could carve a miniature door out of a wooden block and a door would appear In the room.
It might not have the same punch in text form as opposed to visual medium but it is a mechanic concept that I really liked and wanted to try
implementing Into WoodCarver when I first Was developing it toward the end of high school
Unfortunately, I never got to figure out how to implement that feature
As the original file for the game corrupted when, the chromebook I owned at the time updated.
At that point I had been developing WoodCarver for 2 years.
I didn't have the motivation Or the time to remake it so until recently, development on it stopped.
Current Development
So far I have programmed a menu for the game
I intend to keep it this minimalist, babies first html page style for the time being.

Upon starting the game
Is random chance Is to start the game as one of three different characters
Each character Has a unique starting point for the overall narrative.
And variations In horror genre.
Currently there are only 3 characters
And only the start to their stores are written thus far.
