oh my god my favourite video of life ALEX ALBON & CARLOS SAINZ HANDLE MASSIVE PYTHON IN AUSTRALIA!
the thing i love is that alex will just start talking and his mouth does the rest, like it appears to be a direct brain to speech pathway with no filter. he thinks about how he's doing a marketing video and speaks about how he's doing a marketing video. luckily his brain is quite charming and the demon only comes out when he's driving so his monologues are delightful.
it's so funny now because alex will talk off on a ramble, but carlos needs, above all else, for things to be done correctly. so alex will gloss over his "tour" (quotes to symbolize alex's overt breaking of the four wall that this is all staged and he's not actually givng carlos a tour of australia), but carlos wants to do the video correctly. so he interrupts to remind alex that "you booked a pretty big boat"
"an averaged sized boat" said alex, and don't even get me started on this
for some reason carlos has chosen to start the video lying down, which alex clearly doesn't understand and is also perplexed by. it seems like carlos is doing the passive aggressive bunny flop to try to psycho out the snakes, but it absolutely doesn't work because the second one comes out, he's hiding behind alex. carlos is literally using alex as a human shield.
carlos is just afraid of reptiles. like this is clearly a fact. but he doesn't state this (nor should he, because circled around we keep seeing the crowd who are all eager to see him terrified): he says he doesn't need to, no, really, he insists. he will go to bed at night happy, whether or not he handles the snake. the endless attempts at justification.
there's a moment when carlos asks alex, who's pet everything and been draped with a couple of snakes, if he's actually unafraid, and alex, alexly, mutters, no, the same echoing refrain that he's just doing this for the cameras. Carlos barks like he's caught alex out, but of course alex tells us twice a minute that he's only here because marketing has made him.
this video is truly the most i have ever loved carlos, but also, alex. the reptile guy keeps promising them, he promises, that the reptiles are safe (and, to that point, like idk about these reptiles but I certainly can't promise you my ragdoll who i've had since a kitten won't bite you if you come to hang out, so, i would say: a bold claim), and when he's swearing that the huge python won't constrict, alex asks: why. it's the perfect question because then the guy explains that they don't constrict until after they bite, and i love that a) for the information and b) because they keep asking more questions and at one point carlos finds out about the anticoagulant in the big lizard's teeth has never been less happy to learn something in his life. "BLOOD????!?!?!?!"
they keep comparing the feel of the reptiles to different tires (my god) and it's really just some beautiful nerds getting tortured while carlos in particular mentions the typical nerd classics: jurassic park, komodo dragons, and the word constriction more times than you've ever heard said before. we get to find out that carlos expresses emotion through his hair. apparently day to day he just emotionally feels beautiful, but holy shit but the end of the video it's like standing straight up, you've never seen hair look so frazzled. loreal is quaking at the implications.
eventually they just put a snake on him (and no point does he agree to it) and Carlos starts shouting CONTROL THE HEAD which makes alex absolutely mcfucking lose it. the second most funny moment is when carlos says the thing is trying, it's trying, it's trying, the thing is trying to constrict, but at that point alex is paralyzed by the huge snake in his face and isn't laughing. carlos's voice cracks as he closes out the video. he's hated every moment. either alex is the most charismatic person alive who brings out the best in everyone (extremely possible) or you do have to give william's credit for making marketing videos that theoretically fail at their inherent purpose (in the first minute we're reminded this is faked for marketing) and yet also manage to fully achieve their ultimate objective which is to make their drivers unbelievably appealing and likeable.
THE THING IS TRYING. // where is it goiniiiing?

How to say "I didn't read the book"...
...in one image.
Boy and wolves, yes.
Boy and bear, yes.
Boy and black panther, yes.
Boy and python, yes. (For that, forget about Disney and read "Kaa's Hunting", "The King's Ankus", "Red Dog" and "The Spring Running".)
But boy and tiger?
No and never.
*****
Here are Gutenberg links to "The Jungle Book" and "The Second Jungle Book".
Advance warning to the sensitive - the "Second" link is to a facsimile of the 1895 / 1905 edition, and there's A Certain Symbol as Kipling's cartouche. It was an innocent symbol of good luck back then. Treat it as such.
If you find the room gets dusty near the end of the final story, I won't be at all surprised.
*****
I don't think there'll ever be a Proper Jungle Book movie.
As happened with Kipling's lucky-symbol cartouche, Disney's clammy hand has corrupted it, and besides, screenwriters invariably think they can do better than using prose, plot, story and speech that have stood the test of well over a century.
*****
For a good example of how to do this properly, track down the Charlton Heston / Oliver Reed / Christopher Lee / Christian Bale version of "Treasure Island". It's excellent and in @dduane's and my opinion, the best so far. Soundtrack music by The Chieftains does it No Harm At All.
*****
Here's what I posted about 10 years ago when the last Mouse-House Jungle Book was imminent. The thing was box-office successful, though we didn't contribute to that, waiting - not very long - until it appeared on TV since despite the way it was talked up in advance, the end result was no more than a "live-action" reworking of the cartoon.
(How is something "live-action" when every character except Mowgli is mo-cap CGI?)
The current "Snow White" nonsense and everything associated with it suggests that nothing's been learned since then.
Good Hunting!

Do you have any headcanons for First Gen black dragons hanging out when they were younger?

Thanks for asking! And yes! I actually have quite a few!

He's a hopeless romantic. Like 20 confessions rejected? I like to think that he got so desperate for love that he started to go around the campus and declare his love to random beautiful women.
And he probably doesn't attend school a lot unless in rare times, and if he does? His classmates will probably say something like: "wow this is once in a lifetime! Take a picture!" Or something like that
I like to think he actually has abs beneath those loose clothing of his. I mean, he's literally a gang leader don't tell me he doesn't have abs underneath
And his god hideous hairstyle? Yeah he probably thought it was cool and got bullied a lot by it. Till this day he's embarrassed that he used to think that his ugly hairstyle was 'attractive'
He kinda knows how to fight, but he doesn't apply the things he learned (observed from others) to his actual fights so all that learning for nothing ig
And speaking of not knowing how to fight I think it's because panics internally that's why he stumbles a lot when fighting
He has a bellybutton piercing because he was dared by Takeomi that if he gets rejected again he has to pierce his bellybutton. Yeah that's probably why he stopped at the 20th confession
Definitely got tanned because he goes a lot outside a lot because of his gang business and he's trying to regain his whiteness back
Probably had an Emo phase and he definitely got teased by it from his friends
His love language is quality time and acts of service
To be honest I can imagine him getting a tattoo for something stupid, whether it'd be he lost a bet or got dared to
He's definitely a morning person, like I can imagine him getting up at 6 am in the morning and still be positive without coffee (I'm actually so jealous)
He read a lot of self defense books because of all the teasing he got for not knowing how to fight. And he still doesn't know how to fight
His favorite season is definitely summer, like he will argue with you that summer is the best season
Like Miley he has a little teddy bear in his room that he has an unhealthy attachment to and won't wash it unless it's actually so sticky that it envelopes the room whole.
Has dyed his hair with his favorite color before and got scolded by his grandpa because of it
He prefers savoury food than all the other flavours

He definitely learned how to fight because of all the action movies he watches and unlike Shin he ACTUALLY applies it to his fights
As chill as he might seem he's actually deathly scared of snakes and screamed like a girl when he saw a big python chilling in his bed one day
He's deffo a womanizer, he got flocked by tons of women once or twice before at school
That's probably why he doesn't attend school much, along with the fact that he doesn't care that he passes or not
Has a mole somewhere near his ear.
Takes great care of his hair and actually has a hair routine that he can't afford to mess up or else he would beat someone up in the streets
Actually had a bad hair day that traumatized him till this day. Like it was so bad that he cut it up and styled his hair different
Takes probably 1 hour to get ready
Not a morning person and had punched someone because they woke him up, and now whenever they had to wake him up they would play rock papers scissors and whoever loses has to wake him up
Is actually a great listener and would give (brutally honest) advice to people
Has a septum piercing, he had it because he got dared by Takeomi to do it if he lost a fight to him.
Also had a colorful tattoo but it faded out, but he misses his colorful little tattoo
He definitely listens to odetari and Tyler the creator SHOOT ME DOWN IF IM WRONG
This boy probably has multiple CD's of brutal fighting scenes and actually collects them
And he probably smashed a lot of his flip phones while fighting, like there were so many smashed flip phones that they made a bet on how many it smashed flip phones he had and whoever was closest to the truth would get free lunch for a week
Is actually pretty fashionable as a child like the amount of complements he got is immaculate
His love language is quality time

He's a gentle giant, like he might be a tough but to crack but it's actually worth it
He's darker than his friends, he's probably half black though, dyed his hair blond because he thought it was cool
His love language is giving gifts PROVE ME WRONG
He likes bitterness other than the other flavours, probably because he has coffee injected in his veins
Not really a morning person, also not a night owl, he's more like an afternoon person
Autumn is his go to season because of the coolness and the comforting falling of the leaves
He's definitely a planter, he collects different types of plants, herbs, and flowers. Sometimes even rare and tropical plants
He has a fear of heights and will actually swallow a bug then go up 5ft away from the ground
This man is probably like a mom figure among the friend group because of how protective he can be
This man had pulled 6 all nighter but he probably injected an unhealthy amount of coffee that could kill an Elephant
His favorite animal is a cat, and has stopped randomly in the streets to pet one. He almost got in an accident because of that.
He's a writer PROVE ME WRONG like he's got all these words in mind that he cannot express in words so he just writes it in a paper
This man probably got his growth spurt at age 6 years old and stopped at 20 when he was Already standing at 6ft
He learned how to fight because he had this older cousin that knows how to fight well and actually got personal lessons from her
A gentleman at heart
He loves spice, like you can throw 15 peppers in his food and he wouldn't even bat an eye, his spice tolerance is to not be underestimated.
He's got in eating competitions before and won.
He's actually pretty good at singing too. Like he got in a few choirs because of that (he got forced by his mother)
Has shaved his head before because of Takeomi, yes he got dared, and as much as he wanted to refuse he couldn't because he would've got $80 taken away from him
He dyed his hair into a leopard print before and is planning to do it again.
Is a fan of operas and has watched videos of people singing in an opera somewhere in his phone
He's a gold person rather than a silver
he had street smarts

Is the most competitive out of the 3 and started betting competitions because of it (he won)
Spends like hundreds of dollars on gel and takes 30 minutes getting his hair ready
Had started smoking at 14 and actually haven't stopped since, like I'm not surprised his lungs are going to go black from all his smokings
A silver guy rather than a gold
He cannot cook for the life of him, like he's burned water before
Has dyed his hair pink because he lost a bet and needless to say pink is his least favorite color now
He also likes spicy flavours but unlike keizo he doesn't have a crazy spice tolerance and will cry if he eats more than 3 peppers
He also survives on coke and soft drinks and will not live if he doesn't drink atleast 2 bottles of it
He's a night owl and pulled multiple all nighters but also stays awake through the day that it seemed like he has a perfect sleep schedule
Collects pokemon cards as a kid and still has stacks of it hiding somewhere in his room and he will not trade it actually
Is really good at playing cards or any getting games
Sucks ass at chess though like he can't win at chess no matter how hard he tries
His jokes are terrible also, like dad jokes typa terrible
His love language is quality time
He probably has thousands of CD movies that are comedy but really it's just filled with dad jokes and worst of all he laughs at it
Has a tounge piercing that he got at his 15 birthday
Is brutal at truth or dare and has started fights because of it

A/n

Terry Jones Vs. Alan Alda
Propaganda
Terry Jones - (Monty Python's Flying Circus, Do Not Adjust Your Set) - I wish I could tell you all in a few sentences just how handsome, funny, intelligent, kind and soft-spoken Terry Jones was. How passionate he was about the things he loved, lacing his interests (like e.g. history) throughout all the projects he was working on. How he was supposedly always laughing and giggling when writing and reading out sketches. How he admired the art of silent movies/Buster Keaton and was obsessed with writing poems as a child. How he was described as a wonderful friend and a little as if he carried his own world around with him. But there is simply too much to tell and I adore him too much to pick the best facts, so this will have to do
Alan Alda - (M*A*S*H) - He is both the saddest wettest little meow meow and your kindly grandfather and your favourite eccentric uncle (mom's side). Somehow it works. Passionate Democrat, feminist, great writer, he and his books are hilarious. Did a cartwheel when he won an Emmy! How he met his wife is the best meet cute of the last two centuries, and they've now been married over 60 years!!!
Master Poll List | How to submit propaganda | What is vintage? (FAQ)
Additional propaganda below the cut
Alan Alda:
he’s just so good in MASH
youtube
he put so much bisexuality into hawkeye i think it fundamentally changed me when i was little and watching mash for the first time. anyway do we all know the story about how he met his wife when they were at a party together and they were the only two people eating the cake that fell on the floor and he fell in love with her over her laugh. i just think hes neat :) i love when theres a strange looking man. also feel it necessary to say that the guy that wrote the book mash was based on wrote himself as hawkeye and HATED alda's hawkeye bc he displayed his morals too much (alda had it in his contract for the show that every episode had to have an operating room scene bc otherwise you arent backdropping the fact that war is Not fun. actually. he almost didnt take the role bc he thought a war comedy would make too much light of the horrors)
please please please use this picture of him, he's so hot in it
His comedic delivery in MASH...
youtube
The story of how he met his wife is charming and sweet, and they've now been married 65 years
Just look at him. He's the most beautiful man I've ever seen but also he's completely average. He's got a weak jawlines and a round face and these big soft eyes and he's just so beautiful. He's capable of playing a silly charismatic sitcom protagonist in one scene, and a jaded army surgeon haunted by the deaths he's witnessed in the next. He's so hot that my dad once told me he decided to apply to medical school because of how much he was attracted to Hawkeye Pierce. That's literally how I learned that my father was bisexual.
He's also just a really great dude? He's been outspoken about his political beliefs for a long time, and has always been strongly and vocally anti-war, pro-feminist, and pro lgbt. He served a tour in the Korean war, and his experiences there informed his performance in the show. He (and honestly the entire cast, but especially him) really just soared above and beyond the standard for comedies of the day.
youtube
He's so funny and his eyes are pretty
He loves and is a champion of science (Source).

Lester Papadopoulos is a comfort character to me. I’ve been a huge Percy Jackson fan for years now, and I’ve loved many characters (Grover, Nico, Leo, Percy, etc) and when I first read TOA I loved it, but after rereading it…
I fell in love with Lester, this caring and complex character who had many layers to him, that came off as selfish, and yet just so happened to be one of the most selfless characters in the book.
He’s caring, he’s a former god, he’s selfless, he pees himself regularly, he loves his children, he drowned his ex that one time, he is a god of many things, he has had many lovers. He has so many aspects to him that makes him so interesting.
He has a redemption arc as he realizes that he has made mistakes, but also realizes that he has been abused by Zeus, that it most likely influenced how he view things, and how he may have picked up toxic behaviors from Zeus. He learns to be more human, which is such a beautiful arc to see him go through.
He cares SO MUCH about others. He grieves for Jason and Crest and Heloise and so many other people. He tried to sacrifice himself many times and has many heroic qualities, but he is an unreliable narrator and sometimes what he says doesn’t reflect what he does.
His and Meg’s relationship is one of my favorite friendships in the books. It feels like it’s the two of them against the world at times. Meg cares so much for him while also calling him out on his bad actions (like when they were on Sutro Tower) and Lester cares so much for her as he realizes that she has been abused, that she needs help, and that he wants to help her separate from Nero’s influence, that he is so proud of her for standing up to Nero. They both form such a strong bond with each other and I just- I love them!
He is also absolutely hilarious. I find myself laughing as he is just- so snarky sometimes? He also sometimes know random things? (Like the Goddess of Sewers Cloacina) He is also funny when he has no knowledge on how human things work (like not knowing the price of Tater Tot’s)
He also gets anxious and freaks out and cries and he just feels. He gets happy and laughs and gets sad and laments. He gets flashbacks and clearly has trauma but doesn’t let that excuse his bad actions as he feels guilt for his actions. He can also be quite harsh on himself, blaming himself often and sometimes projecting that onto others (like him saying that Piper is blaming him for Crest’s death??) He is such an emotional character and I love him for that.
I love whenever he gets his godly strength as it starts with small things and then it gets to the point that he can create fire with his hands just by simply mentioning cauterizing a wound and breaking Nero’s fasces and having enough strength to drag Python into the Underworld and is strong enough to hold on just enough to save himself from falling into Tartarus. He is such a strong person who has an incredible pain tolerance.
There are many other things that I love about Lester Papadopoulos/Apollo. I think I can positively say that he is my favorite PJO character. I often reread TOA more than the other books. I love the story and how dark it can get while also exploring the themes of how abuse affects you.
I just- I love Meg and Apollo. I need for fanfic of them!! I need more content of them! Their friendship is so underrated, so when I see people make fanfic of them I get so happy!
I also love the community. The fan-artists and the fanfic makers and anyone who just writes long posts, like me, are so talented and is honestly the best fandom I’ve been in.
I hope the PJO show becomes popular so that more people can read these amazing series. I hope there will be a day that TOA gets adapted, and even if it doesn’t, I still have the audiobooks to go back to.
Thanks TOA fandom, for still going strong, even years after the books ended and new books have come out and are still making fanfic about them. It feels like the books have never ended, like the TOA books are still going on and are still making posts.
I’m so happy to be part of such a passionate fanbase.
Anyways if anyone is willing to offer any good fanfics then let me know!
#trials of apollo#lester papadopoulos#meg mccaffrey#toa#sunflower siblings#i got sidetracked#this was originally supposed to be me gushing about Lester Papadopoulos and ended with me gushing about how much I love this fandom#anyways the TOA posts aren’t going to stop anytime soon#except for when Alan Wake 2 comes out#in which case I will be obsessing or Alan Wake 2#toa fandom

LAB PREP + PRACTICALS WEEK [1st Jan - 9th Jan]
a quick summary!
happy belated new YEARRRR (we're six weeks into the new year time is so slippery and for what T_T)
I finished like 10 pens writing assignments and record books this week and didn't study at all so I failed an html mock assessment thing lol but its cool
the events of each lab: math: it was python, but they taught us jack-shit so I ended up memorizing the programs 2 hours before the lab, and passed with flying colours 👍 there was no viva thank god c lang: they gave us 10 programs to study and I'd actually pre-prepared for this because our professor tricked us into thinking it was a week before. I spent like 20 hours straight learning these programs a week ago and it didn't even happen T_T it went fking amazing though, and so did viva!! I got full marks!! :D physics: studied the experiment write-ups the night before and kind of forgot some of it because the experiment I ended up getting had some heavy content - there were so many tables and so many graphs T_T - I persevered though and breezed through the actual experiment conduction because I'd been teaching it to my lab-mates the past week! I thought my viva went disastrously BUT I passed with a 0.4 deduction only!!
my uni's tea is the best tea 👍

Day 1: Apollo
Interpretation notes and trivia under the cut!
His interpretation for my work is based very much around the concept of his manifestation as the Radiant God of the String. Because of this, quite like Hecate, he’s triple-fold and occupies three major spaces; the string of Fate and therefore prophecy, the bowstring and therefore distance and destruction and the lyrestring and therefore music and order. He’s a somewhat melancholy figure all things considered - Fate and following Fate’s tennants is something that he struggled a lot with as a child and even now as a more mature deity, the only solution he’s truly found is to take things one day at a time. Very diligent and fastidious, he’s a hard worker and tends to put his everything into completing any task set before him which also tends to work to his disadvantage since he’s prone to becoming tunnel-visioned until he’s finished what he said he would finish. His family orchestrated his winter breaks because he had the nasty habit of working himself sick when he was still very young.
Apollo is generally represented by circles in my work - priests of Apollo will be marked with at least three circles on their face and usually wear triangular jewellry (typically earrings or necklace charms) to reflect the triple-nature of their god. His favoured colour is a rich, deep blue and while he typically wears elaborate eye paint, he rarely uses face powders. Wears gem-toned blues for his lips unless in mourning where he will leave himself unadorned and unpainted out of respect.
Some quick trivia:
Was born identical to Artemis even though they were born (years) apart. Had brown hair, wolf’s ears and fangs and horns when he was a child but never manifested those features again after his penance for slaying Python. If he’s very stressed or angry, sometimes his fangs will show. The brown of his hair grew out to blond naturally as he developed and matured as a god.
Proficient in all instruments but has always especially preferred stringed instruments. Truly unmatched with a kithara but only uses it for special occasions and official meetings. Generally prefers his lyre for every day usage
Really good at sewing and braiding strings together due to the exercises he had to do while under the tutelage of the Moirai sisters. Can’t weave since Athena banned him from touching a loom but he does like watching her spin. The one time she caught him trying to replicate her patterns with a needle and thread, she complained to Zeus that he had broken his oath. He teases her about that even now.
Was the last of the Twelve to learn how to read and write because he hates letter systems and finds it too arbitrary. Prior to the collaboration that resulted in written letter systems, everyone was perfectly fine with remembering the important stuff and encoding the rest in artistic format such as tapestries, pottery, furniture and jewellry. Apollo himself has a truly formidable memory since he’s been composing and immortalising the events and histories of the world in song since he was very young. He finds written books very dull but Clio’s very insistent about written histories being important and convenient so reluctantly, he’s given permission for his songs and poems to be -gags- transcribed and written down.
Is only called Apollo by his parents, Artemis and Dionysus. Hermes rarely calls him by name in general and the others, including other siblings like Ares and Athena, have always called him Phoebus. Interestingly, Zeus usually calls him Phoebus but will call him Apollo when they are alone or when he’s being especially serious. Apollo is completely comfortable with either name but he does see Phoebus as a bit more formal than Apollo. (Despite his best efforts, both Calliope and Clio also still stubbornly call him Phoebus though he’s fairly sure it’s mostly because they know it bothers him.)
#ginger rambles#pursuing daybreak posting#apollo#Despite how sparkly the doodle of him is he's actually a pretty serious guy LMAO#Apollo's a lot of fun tbh - he's surprisingly set in his ways and can be very traditional which always catches the younger gods off guard#Hermes is the one who decided to invent a written system because he was completely fed up with having to sing elaborate messages#Apollo's memory is also such that he can recall/replicate things after seeing how it's done but he has to physically do the action#to properly remember it. He sees writing as unnatural and a degree of separation away from#the spontaneity and beauty of storytelling poetry and music so he was really upset about being forced to adapt to it#If I had to describe his personality in one word it would be 'illusive'#Apollo is something different to everyone in his life and while they're all equally genuine they're also equally confusing#He's not even the same type of father to his sons - each of his children have a wildly different experience with him as their dad#Super fun I enjoyed doing this next up is Mr Princey prince himself

"I can go into why i dislike ToA (especially Tyrant's Tomb is. a book that exists) but box of pandora. Once open good luck shutting me up" (source: your tags)
Now that you said that, i'm geniunely curious. Open the box. I dare you
This should be obvious but @ the people who really enjoyed ToA, this post is not for you. I’m not sure I’ll even tag it because this is mostly me venting into the void because two people asked and not me wanting to ruin other people’s fun. These are just my personal opinions.
I also apologize if I get any details wrong, I did recheck a lot of the things mentioned but it’s been a minute since I read ToA and might not remember everything 100% correctly. Also, obvious spoiler warning.
*claps hands together* Okay, you asked for this but heads up, it’s going to be long. Maybe grab a snack and a glass of water beforehand.
My beef with ToA can be summarized into a few key points that I’ll elaborate on below but basically:
-It tries to wrap up character arcs for some of the seven (and Reyna) but does this through the eyes of someone with zero context and also treats these characters arcs as unimportant footnotes in the larger story
-Jason’s death and everything surrounding it was handled extremely poorly.
-I cannot remember any demigods staying mad at Apollo. Redemption arcs should not mean everyone has to forgive this character for all the shit they’ve done in the past.
-The death toll. This is not helped by the fact that a lot of the deaths feel like they exist solely for the purpose of making Apollo learn death sucks over and over again (Jason is the worst example of this, but there are others)
More grievances I have but don’t have enough to say about to justify a longer explanation:
-There are a whole bunch of new minor characters on top of the old ones already struggling for screen time. I don’t remember much about any of them, which is a shame because the idea behind some of them is really compelling.
-The story is centered around the Triumvirate as antagonists, with Python as a final boss, but book four just dumps an additional antagonist on you out of nowhere? Why?
-Reyna rejecting Apollo is nice and all but I still had to put up with him crushing on her and was very uncomfortable the whole time.
-Chiron sends a bunch of new demigods into what’s potentially a death battle and tells them it’s a fun field trip (what the fuck)
-This is a personal grievance more than anything but it took me ages (book five) until I really got attached to Meg. I feel like that could have been fixed if she at least got a few POV chapters.
-Dishonorable mention to the punch line joke. Two whole camps of people lining up to hit the canonically abused kid that saved them is not funny.
Details under the cut (Pandora’s box, I did warn you)
Character arcs:
The books really do try to tell meaningful stories for people whose arcs weren’t finished in Heroes of Olympus. With some of them, you can even tell the ideas behind wrapping up those arcs were solid. But the books also tells those stories through the eyes of a character who doesn’t know these people’s pasts and quite frankly doesn’t care a lot of the time. People will voice/do something that is huge for their character and instead of going into that it’s followed up with some random Apollo anecdote that’s only tangentially related at best.
Taking Leo as an example: Apollo has no idea why Leo settling down and finding a home somewhere after everything he’s been through is meaningful. That’s a story that could have been the focus of an entire book of its own, but instead it’s just a side plot to a completely different story. And that story really should have been told through Leo’s eyes, or at least through the eyes of someone like Jason or Piper who realize why this is huge for him.
Apollo also does not care why Leo and Calypso are fighting, so it’s not something that’s properly explored. Leo’s fights with Calypso are mainly mentioned/witnessed. You get some guesses as to how they started but they never mention the exact reasons. They both say they care about each other, but only to Apollo, when the other person isn’t present. When they sort things out it happens largely off-screen. I was also not a fan of the way many of their issues ended up being pinned on Leo being sexist when it was actually way more than that.
ToA does this a lot. It gives arcs to characters who honestly deserved to be explored more, but those arcs are barely footnotes in a larger story where these characters just cameo for a hundred or so pages.
The cameo stuff works okay for Percy and Solangelo because the books are very aware they’re cameos and they get to have fun but this is not their story. But the characters the series tries to give proper plots to are all over the place.
It’s said that Jason and Thalia are really close but they never interact in the books. Jason had a bit of a chance at a normal life finally but that’s barely gone into. (More on Jason later because my god did how the books handled him piss me off massively)
Piper’s struggles with her queerness get the random Apollo anecdote treatment. There’s some stuff about her reconnecting with her dad and her heritage but that’s not explored a ton either.
Frank’s firewood burns up and he’s fine, which is just sort of hand-waved and doesn’t feel meaningful, especially because I think the fireproof pouch was already a fine solution? Congrats on being free of this, now you can get stabbed to death like all the other characters, I guess.
Reyna gets a sort of arc but it feels really weird because it happens almost entirely off-screen. She spends a large fraction of the book chiding Lavinia for leaving her post, then gets her leg broken, is off-screen for a while and then just DIPS with the Hunters after her home suffered huge casualties.
I also think her joining the Hunters is a super lame way to resolve her arc in general (she just lays down one responsibility to sign up for the next, and a character not wanting romance/not wanting romance right now should be allowed to exist without having to join the eternal maiden’s club, but that problem isn’t isolated to Reyna and could honestly be a whole post of its own)
This also comes down to the fact that I’m here mainly for the demigods. I care about these kids having good arcs and good lives. I care significantly less about Apollo having to learn really obvious shit like “murdering my pregnant girlfriend was perhaps a little messed up”
Jason’s death and everything surrounding it
Killing off a major character (especially one whose arc isn’t finished) can be a plot twist that works at times. But it has to be handled well. Doing it to a character that’s suffered horrifically and is starting to heal is also a hugely shitty move, but I understand you want meaningful deaths for the plot sometimes.
But you cannot do it the way Rick did it with Jason’s death. If he was going to kill off one of the seven, he should have done it in Heroes of Olympus, with that character narrating and their friends getting to deal with the aftermath and grieve.
Instead, Jason dies in a book that he appears in for like. A hundred pages iirc? Two-hundred at most? You get Apollo narration on it, and sure, he’s big sad about it, but he also knew this guy for two days.
Piper gets a few pages to deal with his death, then disappears from the book and comes back for a heroic rescue later. Leo gets like two pages to deal with the fact that his best friend is dead. They then proceed to fuck off to Oklahoma instead of going to the funeral. For what reason? No idea. The book doesn’t bother to explain it.
Jason gets a Camp Jupiter funeral, with none of his Camp Half-Blood friends present, because fuck the fact that him belonging to both camps was a huge part of his arc, right?
Piper and Leo know Jason is dead but they cannot be there because they’d already used up their time as ToA side characters, I guess. Percy and Annabeth can’t come, they don’t find out due to demigod communication issues until the end of the series. Thalia also doesn’t get to go to her brother’s funeral. She doesn’t find out until the funeral is already over. We don’t even really get to see her grieving, her finding out Jason died happens off-screen too.
Because this is the Apollo show, Apollo is the guy who leads the funeral procession instead of, like, Reyna, who knew Jason for years.
Also, for some reason, the person avenging Jason is Frank? Absolutely no offense to Frank, he’s a great guy and I’m sure he cared about Jason, but that choice still feels deeply comedic considering I can remember exactly one meaningful interaction him and Jason had in HoO (Jason giving Frank praetor position at the end of HoH) and not a single conversation they had beyond that. If Rick had to write Leo and Piper out of the plot, why not at least have Reyna avenge him?
Jason dies specifically because Apollo broke a stupid oath he made on the River Styx. We’re told that people around him will keep dying because of this. He dies as a chess piece in a stupid game between gods, for the sake of Apollo’s character development. He dies so he can be brought up every hundred pages for Apollo to waffle about how sad his death was but how he’d also definitely not want to be brought back (I get it, we cannot revive people constantly, but having Apollo make this point when, again, he knew the guy for two days, is still really stupid. Nico also gets to make the same point at the end just in case the reader didn’t understand before that we’re not bringing Jason back)
Apollo is forgiven by everyone
Related to the above point. Like I said, we’re outright told that Jason dying is a direct consequence of Apollo’s oath. Apollo also knew taking them along on the mission would get Jason or Piper killed and he did it anyway.
Piper gets to be mad at him very briefly, but when he tries to apologize at the end of the book, she interrupts him and tells him “it’s fine” (her voice is described as “no anger, just natural heat”)
Thalia doesn’t get to be mad at him at all. Her baby brother died and she just pats Apollo on the back and tells him “it’s fine, Jason made his own choices. That’s what heroes do.” And then it’s made about how Artemis lost Apollo when he got transformed into a human instead of. Like. The fact that Thalia just lost her baby brother for the second time in her life.
IT’S FINE?? THAT’S ALL ANYONE HAS TO SAY ABOUT THIS??
Hell, Apollo even has a sort of dream hallucination of Jason’s ghost so that ghost can forgive him too.
Was that really necessary? Why do people think that a character learning to be better means absolutely everyone has to forgive them? Wouldn’t it have been a better sticking point for a god to learn people are allowed to stay mad at you?
The death toll
A lot of people die in these books. People dying in pjo books has always been a thing, but it’s never felt this pointless or this much like it was solely happening for a single person’s character development.
Jason is the most pointed example of this, but there are more. Starting with the fact that two of Apollo’s kids almost get torched in front of his face in the first book (Austin and Kayla) and somehow that is not a sticking point. I don’t think it’s ever brought up again afterwards.
Other characters that die so Apollo can learn death sucks:
-Several Dryads die saving the grove of Dodonna
-Heloise the Griffin
-One random unnamed demigod in Dark Prophecy (mentioning them because that’s where it occurs to Apollo demigod deaths also suck)
-Money Maker (Dryad)
-Crest
-Harpocrates and the Sybil of Cumae
The death toll in Tyrant’s Tomb is completely ridiculous. Like, “feels worse than Last Olympian despite not even being the final battle”-ridiculous. And unlike how Percy at least gets to use that tragic battle to change things in a fundamental way, the Camp Jupiter demigods don’t win anything significant. Their home is only almost completely destroyed. Some of them aren’t dead. That’s it.
If you remember the name of any side character Camp Jupiter demigod from HoO, there’s a very high chance they die in this book.
We don’t get exact numbers for how many people die. The book actually explicitly refuses to give numbers, stating “We didn’t count the dead. They weren’t numbers. They were people we had know, friends we had fought with.” (Which gets even more ironic due to the fact that, again, we barely have any named CJ demigods to begin with)
The closest thing we get to numbers are that 25 demigod members of the legion died in the battle before the book started, and towards the end there are fourteen total demigods still standing of the first to third cohort combined. Even if half the missing demigods are “just” so severely wounded that they can’t fight anymore, that’s still 60 dead kids! The pre-book battle was mentioned to have been hardest on the civilians. We don’t know how many of them died, and losses among the fourth and fifth cohort are also unknown, but that is a ridiculous amount of losses. Why are there so many dead kids in this book and why are we all just supposed to be okay with this?
Jupiter explicitly forbids the other gods to intervene. The only one who does is Diana, after an offering, and she takes her sweet time to get there. That camp is named after the guy! That’s people’s kids down there! I know the gods not helping their kids isn’t exactly new, but this is on a whole other level.
There are funerals but those are largely skipped over, and Frank announces that they’ll resolve this by asking Lupa to bring in more demigods so they’ll come back stronger, which. Baffling statement. Let’s just fix the dead people by replacing them.
TL;DR: Good on Apollo for learning to be better, but I really didn’t like how it was done. There were a handful of things I liked in almost all the books, not including Tyrant’s Tomb which wins the award for rrverse book I most wanted to chuck out of a window. Some of the ideas were good. I think the first and last book are mostly solid (largely due to the fact that those don’t try to shove in entire side character arcs). But the things I did enjoy just get very heavily outweighed by everything that annoyed and upset me.
I really wish ToA had been mostly new characters with maybe some minor cameos, and other people’s arcs had been saved for different books. I also think splitting the perspective between Apollo, Meg and maybe the HoO character who was trying to have an arc in that specific book would have helped.

I'm coming from having fallen in love with the show bbc merlin and then reading roger lancelyn green, then howard pyle. I really loved green's way of presenting balin and balan, and the way they seal their own fates, and the dolorous stroke. (I also loved his gareth/beaumains! best part of the book in imo.) as for pyle, I loved his strange, wild magic adventures and the dialogue between arthur and merlin as merlin is tiredly asking him to please not fight every knight he sees. can you recommend anything with gareth, anything wonderfully tragic about balin and balan, anything that focuses on the magic and setting, or anything that just made you laugh to read?
Hi anon!
Welcome to Arthuriana. I loooove Howard Pyle. Have you read all 4 books? Highly recommend the whole series. Sounds to me as if you’re looking for more retellings, so that’s what I’ll give you.
As always, if the author is out of print or has passed, I’ll share a PDF. But if they’re alive, I link to goodreads so you can learn more about the book and decide if you want to purchase.

Hi! You mentioned there are online tutorials/sites for learning Comp Sci and OSINT - any recommendations? Thanks!
Hi! You got lucky that today is the day I check my inbox lol. So. For comp-sci: - CS50X from Harvard is a public avaiable course on youtube I'd 100% recommend. These are the undedited (so far) lectures of 2024: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LPJfIKxwWc&list=PLhQjrBD2T381WAHyx1pq-sBfykqMBI7V4&ab_channel=CS50
This gives you all the basics you need to understand how coding and pcs in general works. (I had comp sci in my university course)
- Freecodecamp is a website full of FREE tutorials on several programming language. Advice: learn python. You will understand later on.
- The rest really depends on what you actually want to learn and why - each programming language has its own purpose and application. OSINT: -There is this full course: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwA6MmbeGNo&t=205s&ab_channel=TheCyberMentor (But you can find more on youtube.) - Bellingcat's resources: https://www.bellingcat.com/category/resources/ -IntelTecniques: https://inteltechniques.com/ - Osint Newesletter: https://osintnewsletter.com/
But here is the catcher: if you plan to do osint it heavily depends on where you live. I'm in Europe, so it means I'm under GDPR, therefore I must abid to stricter regulations than a US OSINT analyst. A lot of data that might be considered public domain in the US(big one: conviction records) are not in europe, and you won't be able to access it unless you are a registered private investigator at least (but in my case it's rare that I go after people, that's not a part of any task I might encounter at work). Not only that, but a lot of the avaiable tools are designed to work only with specific countries in mind for various reasons and there is a big bias on US-based investigations. If youre' not in the US I recommend you reach out to your local OSINT or cybersecurity professionals association, they usually have resources and specific information, a lot of times for free. Also keep in mind: OSINT has a lot of different applications and it depends on what you're doing with it. Journalists might work more with satellites and images (a thing I know nothing about), debunkers will definitely understand social media more, if you do business intelligence you will look more at news sites, trademarks and deposits and so on to reach your conclusion. You did your course... Now what? I recommend getting on CTFs, like tracelabs that I've linked above, but there many of them (osint dojo for example) or Kase Scenarios. These are safe environments to practice on (except for tracelabs since it deal with actual cases of missing people and it can lead to... not so good leads, allow me to leave it there) You should also understand how intelligence (as the discipline) works. There are several resources, but my favourite is definitely Psychology of Intelligence Analysis. It's a series of declassified training documents from CIA analyst Richard Bauer, that was based on Daniel Kahneman (yes, the "thinking fast and slow" author, and I also do recommend this book) research on euristics. Intelligence is fundamental because OSINT might be helpful to gather the data, but the data then needs to be processed, analysed and you also need to get a conclusion from that analysis. Studying intelligence will help you avoid a lot of pitfalls that happens when you do an investigation, such as not understanding when you know enough, if you're being a victim of your own bias, if you're missing something or if you're going with the right approach. But I have to admit that the best of training I've received so far is from my local OSINT association because I've been able to train with people that work(ed) in the military, get their advice and have a deep understand of the work itself (and the reason why I have decided to actually make cyber threat intelligence my job, even if I work for a private company and I have no interest in working for the government). And yes ethics is a big thing for the OSINT community.
I hope this is helpful enough!

I made a character sheet for one of my ocs. Took a lot of bravery to do it, but I made it.🥲 I wasn't sure how to handle the two boxes under the main picture, and I should add that this character is AroAce.🏳️🌈
Metrics explained here:
*Name: Peter Romanov was named purely by his mother. I would go into detail about how his patronymic works but I'm not very sure on how it works in Russian culture, so I'll keep my mouth shut. Anyways, Roman prefers to be called, well, Roman because he despises his first name for some reason.
*Nicknames: If you want to avoid a death glare, call him by Roman or Wolf.
*Race/Species: Before he became the Wolf, he was a first-generation Russian American human. After getting diagnosed with a supposedly rare fatal muscle wasting disease, he secretly began injecting himself with wolf DNA on the genetic level. This was actually working really well...until an assistant startled him during one such procedure and he injected a massive amount into his cells...and mutated into his current state. The unstable state of his cells means that every 5 days, he turns back into a human, and after five days again, he returns to the Wolf, rinse and repeat.
*Age: 30 as of 2024, being born in 1993 after his parents left Russia for the Americas.
*Gender: Born Male, identifies as such.
*Alignment: Wanting to follow the pursuit of knowledge and science for the betterment of mankind, Roman ignores the fact that he was stripped of his license to run a laboratory (after the genetics incident) and continues operating to create new inventions. Problem is, he can't patent them under his own name...
*Class/Job: As stated above, Roman shouldn't be operating a laboratory. He was banned from the high council of intellectuals and was forbidden from ever using their tools to create or invent again. That hasn't stopped him from creating a laboratory from materials gathered on the black market, hiring minions from criminal origins, and operating secretly underneath a normal Pennsylvanian town as a scientist.
*Perception and Communication: He takes advantage of his improved wolf senses to observe every detail around himself. As for communication, he's a great orator and debater, but he can get frustrated if people don't understand his high tech jargon.
*Persuasion and Mediation: He listens well and can use it to his advantage when trying to persuade someone into doing something for him and when mediating an issue between two groups. He's not the best at it, but he's good enough for most scenarios.
*Literacy and Creativity: Raised by a genius mother who noticed that her child's intellect was increasing at an abnormally fast pace, she opted to guarantee that his childhood was to be surrounded by folklore, documentaries, and educational materials. This led to a man that could be omnidisciplinary in Engineering, Robotics, programming (Python/HTML/C++), Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Genetics, mathematics, and neurology. Not surprising for an IQ that reached 300 at 16 years old. (he refuses to do actual medicine though.) He also grew up speaking English and Russian at home.
*Cooking: He can bake, but actually making original meals is kinda hard for him. Especially as the Wolf, because it's led to him just settling for any food with meat in it, even if it's raw.
*Tech Savvy: From as young as 4 years old, he was fixing phones and taking apart cars.
*Combat: Roman took martial arts classes at 16, but rarely uses what he's learned. Especially after becoming the Wolf, because now he has boosted strength that allows him to easily knock out people with a punch or throw them. Not very good with guns either.
*Survival: He learned basic survival skills from the numerous books he's read, but has never really exercised it or gone camping to hone it. As the Wolf, he does have some natural instincts that help.
*Stealth: Ugh. He's never had a reason to be stealthy as a human. This worsened when he turned into a hybrid, because his clunky, furry body is harder to hide. Being 6 ft 7 inches in Wolf form doesn't help.
*Street smarts: Roman has never known a normal childhood due to his rapidly increasing intelligence netting him media attention and breezing him through school. Therefore, he's never been able to make friends with kids his age, and his overprotective parents kept him from exploring the world, leading to his street smarts being shockingly low.
*Seduction: No...just...no.
*Luck: Not anymore or less lucky than a normal person.
*Handling Animals: When in Wolf form, it's very difficult to handle animals without them freaking out on him. In human form? Animals love him.
*Pacifying Children: He's good at distracting kids with a story or a piece of candy, but his stronger senses mean that a child crying is painful to listen to.
*Strength: Probably due to his wasting disease, he's weaker in human form, (as in, weaker than the average human), but notoriously strong as a Wolf.
*Dexterity: Pretty average. Struggles in Wolf form due to not being used to the big furry paws.
*Health: As mentioned before, weak in human form, strong and vibrant in Wolf-man form.
*Energy: Usually in the middle.
*Beauty: Considered handsome in human form. Considered cute fluffy doggo in Wolf form.
*Style: While he's usually in a lab coat, whenever he ventures into the town, he's wearing designer clothes that fit his Wolf form well.
*Hygiene: So for some reason, Wolf still has human lymph nodes in the usual spots, meaning that he also sweats from those areas. So he has to shower daily or else he develops a pretty wild smell.
*Intelligence: From the age of 2, Roman's brain suddenly developed at an insanely fast speed. Nobody knows why this happened exactly, but they had no choice to accept it as Roman began to pass classes flawlessly, finish entire novels in hours, and do complex equations by himself. He's graduated highschool by the age of 12 and helped teach college classes at the age of 15.
*Happiness: Despite his current situation, he's really good at seeing the bright side of things. Roman actually enjoys being in his Wolf form, and feels more free now that the council isn't constantly watching over his back.
*Spirituality: Raised Christian, Roman became agnostic around his pre-teens, and had stayed that way since.
*Confidence: He's very confident in his skills, but not to the point where he thinks he's infallible.
*Humor: His humor tends to vary greatly. While he doesn't make jokes himself, he does find other people's jokes and references entertaining.
*Anxiety: Like with the Happiness stat, Roman doesn't let much get to him. His Wolf affliction actually saved his life, as it stopped and partially reversed the progression of the wasting disease, leading him to be relatively positive.
*Patience: He's learned to be patient with the average person since they can't make hundreds of calculations a minute in their brain like he can, though it does have limits if he can tell if someone is intentionally trying to be an obstacle in his mission.
*Passion: Developing his love for science from his mother, Roman wants a world that is as free from suffering as humanly possible, and he will invent and create as much as he can.
*Charisma: While he gives off a cool and professional aura, his social development was still stunted by his strange childhood.
*Empathy: He can feel like other people, but he sometimes thinks that other people blow things out of proportion, or can solve their problems more easily than they think.
*Generosity: Gives to those that severely need it, doesn't give to much of anyone else.
*Wealth: How does Roman fund a laboratory and a couple dozen minions? Hacking banks obviously. He's good enough that the possibility of police discovering that it's him doing it is so unlikely it's insane, and he usually steals enough that it can pay the bills and all of his minions while still having some left over for leisurely pursuits.
*Aggression: He can be fierce when he needs to be, but prefers giving off a stoic energy usually.
*Libido: Never had much of one at all. Being aromantic asexual helps in making sure that this isn't ever an issue he needs to care about anyway.
I'll add more later, but I'm tired and it's getting late.

Very beautiful! Very Powerful!
MINORS: This place is not a place of honor. No highly esteemed deed is commemorated here. Nothing valued is here.
Thought I’d make one of these pined post things to introduce myself.
My name is Solanum, but you can call me Sol or Lump (or Sol Badgal if you’re epic)
I’m a 24 year old ginger, use it/she (they/them or neopronouns ok but not preferred), simultaneously demiromantic and polyamorous, exist in an asexual quantum superposition, and am bi/pan. Most importantly, I am also a fish
I have a degree in Physics with plans to go into a PhD program for research Astronomy. My area of focus is galaxy structure, formation, and evolution. I’m currently working on my first research papers, adapting my undergraduate thesis work into proper astronomy journal form. I love doing physics and take requests for calculations, stupid or serious (check “#lump’s calculations” for those I’ve done so far, these are my best posts by far).
Outside of research, work, and classes I can usually be found gaming, playing MTG, or putting way too much effort into my shitposts while watching something on my second monitor.
I can be found on a few other sites under the same username but am only active here, and if any mutuals want to connect on discord or steam dm me
If you take one thing away from reading this it’s GO PLAY OUTER WILDS RIGHT NOW. Do not look up anything about it, just play the game and then get your friends to play it. Then we can all talk about it. Please, I need to talk about this masterpiece with more people.
Now that you’ve learned about me I have gained access to your walls. Don’t worry, all I do is nibble a bit of drywall from time to time.
Too many fun facts below
My personal motto is: “The universe is scary and so much bigger than any of us can comprehend, so it’s our duty to fag it up as much as possible”
My plushies names: -Tofrug: Lord Squishers -Manatee: Weapon of Lettuce Destruction -Reimu Fumo: Air Fried Bastard -Hydreigon: Hans -Vaporeon: Dihydrogen Monoxide Puppy -Meowscarada: Greenfield -Reshiram: Nuclear Mommy -Gardevior: Horizon -Blåhaj: Jimbei -Gobbo Bard: Ga Bu
I love nature, and evergreen forests in particular. I enjoy hiking and mushroom and berry picking. Here’s a big cluster of morels I found

Why I Love Studying at Sabaragamuwa University
🌿 Hey Tumblr fam! I just wanted to take a moment to share something close to my heart — my experience at Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka, a place that’s more than just classrooms and assignments. It's where I found peace, passion, and purpose. 💚
🌄 A Hidden Gem in the Hills
Imagine studying on a campus surrounded by misty hills, green forests, and natural waterfalls. Sounds dreamy, right? Well, that’s exactly what SUSL in Belihuloya feels like. The air is fresh, the environment is peaceful, and nature literally whispers encouragement while you study. 😌🍃

📌 Location: Belihuloya, Sri Lanka 🔗 Official Website of SUSL
💻 My Faculty: Computing
As a proud student of the Faculty of Computing, I can honestly say that SUSL is more than qualified when it comes to academic excellence. 💯
Our professors are not just knowledgeable—they actually care. We work on cool projects, explore real-world tech, and even get support for internships and future careers.
?
👩💻 Tech, Talent & Tenacity
You might be surprised, but SUSL is seriously catching up with the tech world.
Let me break it down for you—our Faculty of Computing is organized into three departments, and each one opens up different futures:
🖥️ Department of Computing and Information Systems (CIS)
A great fit if you're interested in IT infrastructure, system design, software, and business applications
You learn how tech supports and transforms businesses, governments, and society
🛠️ Department of Software Engineering (SE)
Perfect if you love to build software from the ground up
Focuses on software architecture, testing, DevOps, and full development lifecycles
📊 Department of Data Science (DS)
The department of the future! 🌐
Teaches you how to work with big data, machine learning, AI, statistics, and more
If you like solving puzzles with data, this is your world
No matter which path you choose, you’ll get:
Modern course content aligned with global tech trends
Hands-on labs and access to real tools (GitHub, Python, VS Code, cloud platforms, etc.)
Internships with leading IT companies
Final-year projects that are often built with startups or community needs in mind
Some of my seniors are now working at top companies, others are doing research abroad—that’s the kind of transformation this faculty creates. 🙌

Here’s a little list of what I adore about life here:

Affordable – both the university and the area are budget-friendly
Balance – education + mental wellness = perfect combo
