Gai: There. I’m done with Metal’s and Shinki’s. Have you finished Boruto’s yet?

Kakashi: I finished. Now I’m just working on Himawari’s.

Gai: Make sure you use the same wrapping paper as Sarada’s, since they’re matching sets. And don’t forget the pink bows.

Kakashi: Got it.

Gai: *wheels himself over to Kakashi* Do you think the “big kids” will like the gift we have for them?

Kakashi, grinning: Sending them on week-long trip to the mountains while offering to keep their kids at our place? They’ll go crazy.

Gai: Speaking of crazy, we’re going to have to make quite a few trips to the market before then. Takes a lot to feed five growing kids.

Kakashi: *finishes wrapping Himawari’s present, and sets it under the tree* Agreed. Hey, Gai?

Gai: Yeah?

Kakashi: I’m … I’m sorry about your gift …

Gai: What do you mean?

Kakashi: I mean all those doctors and specialists I visited … and not a single one said they could fix your leg. 

Gai: Kakashi … 

Kakashi: It’s just, I married you and I promised I would always take care of you. But what kind of husband am I if I can’t even get something as simple as a shattered leg taken care of for you?

Gai: Kakashi. Baby. I’ve learned to accept this leg a long time ago. I’ve gotten used to it, and it doesn’t even bother me anymore. I’d say I’m getting along quite well without it, wouldn’t you?

Kakashi: Yes, but —

Gai: And as for my gift … *stands on his crutches and goes to Kakashi, leaning into him*

Gai: I’m married to the best man on this earth, who has all the time in the world to spend with me. We have a beautiful home. We have children AND grandchildren to spend the holidays with. What more could I possibly want?

Kakashi, tearing up and hugging Gai: S-sappy old man …

Gai: *hugging him back* Of course, there is ONE thing I guess I could ask for …

Kakashi: *starts kissing Gai’s neck* Is it what I think it is —?

Gai: If you’re thinking it’s me hoping you don’t burn the cookies again, then yes, you’re right.

Kakashi: Burn the cookies? What — 

*the smoke detector suddenly goes off and a burning smell wafts out of the kitchen*

Kakashi: … damn.

You can’t force your kids into having a relationship with their step parent or step sibling(s) 

You can’t force your kids to love them 

You can’t force them to call their step parent mom or dad 

You can’t force them to think of their step sibling(s) as their brother or sister

That’s not the way to go. I’m not saying it’s cool for your kid(s) to actively be hateful and disrespectful because it’s not. Everyone needs to have respect for one another. 

 But far too many parents and step parents envision this fantasy where everything is fine and dandy and they don’t often have the kids’ best interest in mind. It’s about what they want. You’d have a better chance of a real relationship developing if you don’t push so hard. You can’t dictate their feelings, bottom line. If you go gung ho about it, you will push them away and cause resentment.

I see your Raeda found families and raise you: Raeda blended family. 

It’s not quiet or peaceful, but there’s something calming about the aura of the house. It’s warm, welcoming. A little corner of the world that shelters them all for a little while. 

The boys are napping on the couch. King is curled into a ball on Derwin’s pillow, perched on top of his head like a cat. Occasionally his tail twitches in his sleep. Derwin looks incredibly peaceful, with his arms crossed and his glasses perched precariously on the tip of his nose. Their breathing is almost perfectly in sync, and it seems as though they’d be content to sleep there together for the rest of the night. 

Katya and Luz are sprawled out on the living room floor together, giggling over a typewriter. The pair had been overjoyed to reunite at a rebellion meeting (leading an embarrassed Katya to explain that she’d ended up in the Conformatorium long before joining the BATTS). Now that the Day of Unity was past, they’d formed a close friendship- so close that Eda sometimes jokingly called them her twins. Once, Raine had been tiptoeing up to bed and had stumbled on the girls, asleep in what Luz called a ‘pillow fort’ in front of the crystal ball. It had made them smile, watching them dozing in their fort in front of a cheesy rom-com- for it meant that their kids could finally be just that. (They would have taken a picture, too, if Eda hadn’t promptly tripped over Luz’s outstretched foot and brought the whole fort down.) 

Eda herself is in the kitchen, cooking some kind of odd pastry-encased log of meat and vegetables that Luz had begged her for. Amber is flitting around her, chattering away about the latest Grudgby game at her school. The girl makes an attempt to swipe a bit of the dough, earning herself a playful swat from Eda, and Raine pretends not to see when she promptly pinches off a bite herself and sneaks a second to a giggling Amber. 

Raine is sitting at the kitchen table, a small smile on their face. They’re content to sit and watch their family (their family) spending time together. It’s something wonderful, something beautiful. The kind of loving family that they’d always dreamed about but never thought they’d get to have (especially not with her). 

And life, for the first time in a long time, is good.

You know you're true siblings when they walk in your room and do stuff to piss you off. My step sister just came in, told me I should reorganise my entire room (again) and told me the chocolate sprinkles are really good (which isn't true) THEN LEFT THEM ON MY SHELF AS I WAS YELLING "VAN TAKE THE SPRINKLES FFS WHYYYY" anyway she's really my sibling now which ngl is sweet, but she did leave the sprinkles snd some crimes can't be forgiven

Dev Bondarin is directing a reading of my kitchen-sink dramedy TUMBLEWEED with the UP Theater Company (www.uptheater.org). The reading will take place on Sunday, January 21st at 3pm at Ft. Washington Collegiate Church located at 729 W. 181st St. (1 train to 181st).

Kirby Fields, artistic director of the UP Theatre Company recently spoke with the Manhattan News recently about their Dead of Winter series: ‘Fields says it is particularly gratifying to establish relationships with writers. Marcus Scott, who wrote the third play in the series, “Tumbleweed,” came to a staged reading last year. Then he sent Fields a number of his own plays.

“This guy is just bursting with ideas,” said Fields. “He’s pulling from philosophy, pop culture…he’s culling from all different racial dynamics on stage and putting them all together.” Directed by Dev Bondarin, the play revolves around a young Black woman with “hair like a tumbleweed” who tries to reconcile different standards of beauty.’
