WELL SINCE YOU ASKED here's the basic idea

Philip Wittebane is the pastor of First Church in Gravesfield, a small congregation with a long history and a reputation for outlandish claims of miracles—including the alleged resurrection of Reverend Philip’s nephew when he was a child. First Church was founded by Puritans in the 1630s and has been pastored almost exclusively by the Wittebane family line.

While most see First Church as just another historic New England church, there are some people in Gravesfield who see it for what it is: a fundamentalist death cult. Hunter Wittebane, on the other hand, sees it as the only reason he’s still alive.

Meanwhile, on the other, newer side of town is Blessed Light Ministries/Church (known colloquially as B-Light), a megachurch pastored by world-renowned televangelist Odalia Blight (and her husband Alador, but no one cares about him). Odalia is known for her passionate sermons on the blessings brought about by financial generosity aka giving the church all your money. She’s written dozens of bestselling books on how to be blessed.

Blessed Light Ministries put on the appearance of acceptance of marginalized groups, including the LGBTs, but behind the scenes, Odalia restricted her youngest daughter Amity from being friends with Willow Park after learning about Willow’s “homosexual” dads. Amity thinks she knows all about the corruption on the other side of the cameras, but it may be even worse than she realizes.

Luz Noceda never really believed in God, but especially not after the death of her father. Her parents had spent most of their money hoping for a miracle, only for Manny to die anyway. Meanwhile, Camila still believes, just not in the megachurch prosperity gospel. When she seeks out a new congregation to worship with, she and Luz find themselves at the front doors of First Church.

Here, Luz meets Hunter, the devout nephew of the (in her correct opinion) creepy-ass reverend. The morbidly curious Luz is immediately fascinated by the boy who supposedly came back from the dead, so she agrees to keep coming to this church (despite the heavy dread she feels whenever crossing the threshold).

Amity is the president of the Christian club at Gravesfield High School. She acts like a judgmental prude while secretly yearning for a different life. Luz, Willow, and Gus are “weirdos who stick together.”

Hunter has been homeschooled his entire life, but after meeting Luz he thinks he might ask his uncle if he can attend public school—for the sake of evangelizing to his fellow youths, of course! It would strengthen his faith! Philip reminds Hunter that God has big plans for him—that's why he was given a second chance at life, after all—and if Hunter were to diverge from those plans...Well, let's just say He may rethink that second chance.

So basically Philip runs a death cult that may or may not involve human sacrifice and Odalia is a megachurch swindler. First Church would be Puritan-adjacent, Blessed Light is your classic contemporary non-denominational church (think Hillsong or Bethel if you're cursed with the knowledge of those churches) ("Blessed Light" may or may not be an indirect reference to a secret third not as well-known megachurch...)

Everyone outside the cult church who knows about the alleged resurrection of Hunter thinks it's just a blatant lie. But the story is true, though some details have been changed by Philip, such as why Hunter was in that "accident" and how Philip managed to bring him back from the dead. (This is where the supernatural stuff starts to come in. I don't have super solid ideas for that part of it yet; most of these ideas are ones I came up with in the last few days.) Hunter has been raised (read: indoctrinated) to believe wholeheartedly in Philip's teachings and that all other forms of Christianity are demonic, and he especially hates churches like Blessed Light. So when he meets Amity, president of the so-called "Christian" club, he immediately hates her. Meanwhile, as the child of a preacher, she sees herself in him. Rosegold friendship my beloved <3

Zmarqa is one of my absolute favorite Hualian artists that I found on Twitter and this is just a taste of some of her more recent work.

She writes and draws her own comics of AUs involving them that have so much thought put into them. Her pieces in general are so detailed and you're almost always rewarded for taking the time to really look at them.

do you think young Belos (kid belos) was good or bad? Random question but I was thinking about that, because I drew a picture of kid pip once and someone comment like "no, I don't think he was good and innocent when he was a kid. I think he was always bad". Just curious about your take hahaha since I think I've never saw someone so much evil as your Belos version honestly

Fascinating question!

First of all, I don’t believe children can be evil. Not to be too real world about it, but the concept that children are capable of not only doing evil but actually being evil is harmful and there are some people (adults) who use that ideology as an excuse to harm children.

From a storytelling perspective? No, I don’t think Kid Belos/Philip was evil. Not only because of my personal opinions on children generally, but because of the storytelling of the Owl House itself.

Luz wasn’t born a hero. Philip wasn’t born a villain. This is like, one of the major themes of the series. People make choices! Belos chose, time after time, to do bad things that hurt people because it benefitted him and his agenda. His choices were evil and he never expressed genuine regret or willingness to change. Luz did her best to make choices that would help people, and sometimes she screwed up, but she learned from her mistakes, changed, and grew as a person.

This is like, the whole point of Watching and Dreaming and the Collector’s change to be a better person. Luz and King and Eda could see that the Collector was a CHILD. An extremely powerful child who did things that hurt people, but also a child who was lonely and didn’t understand what they were doing.

side note: regardless of someone’s opinion on the matter (which is subjective and cannot be objective because there were never scenes of Philip as a child so there’s no “correct” answer and even this is just my interpretation based on themes and personal opinion), commenting that on someone’s art?? that they just shared??? for fun and for free????? preposterous. uncouth. impolite.
