Also!! If you’ve watched Your Name and liked it, esp the bodyswapping element and the concept of two people’s identities becoming blurred at the edges as they share each other’s lives, then I highly recommend the book Where I End and You Begin by Preston Norton. It’s by far my favourite bodyswapping story and although the tone is different from Your Name, the exploration of identity through bodyswapping is similar and I think it’s for sure worth a read.

This is my comfort fic. No joke, this is what I read when I want to die. It’s angsty as all hell, it’s made me cry, but it is so indescribably good. Kim is an addict going through recovery, finding love and family along the way. He hits rock bottom—arguably multiple times—but always claws his way back, always with the support of the people that love him. It’s such a beautifully written and cathartic story, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve read it. But it’s almost certainly the fic I’ve reread the most.

Sneaking this VegasPete onto my otherwise KimChay list bc it altered me. I think most people already know what it is, but jic: it’s a sci-fi/cyberpunk/android AU, and it’s one of the best things I’ve ever read. I go feral for androids and this fic delivers in all the best ways. The world building alone makes me weep. But all of the characters interactions, the way we get such an in depth feel for everyone despite the limited PoV, and the most satisfying take I’ve seen on android artificial intelligence ever—I can’t recommend this story enough.

This fic is the Kim & Khun vs. Tawan team-up we deserve. Kim is a ruthless, demented bitch, that's too cool to beat Tawan to death bc what if he messes up his wrists right before a show?? Big, get 'im. Kim is the feral-est cat ever, leaving behind evidence and bodies for Kinn bc saying "hey bro, I still love you/look out for you" is too much emotion for him. The fic is also from Tawan's PoV which also makes it the funniest thing ever, for reason that I won't spoil <3

The Wiked Lies We Live by shubaka (@shubaka)

Oh my god, this fic. Canon divergence (technically??) where most things happen as normal... except KimChay have been bodyswaped at the start of it. The little twists Shu puts on the events of canon, given it isn't the correct characters experiencing them (such as Big being very confused about why Kim is suddenly nice to him??) are so much fun.

A Portrait of Affection by froginthesun (@froginthesun)

Kim is an artist and Chay is the part time nude model he hires. ‘Nuff said right there, except no it isn’t, this fic is beautiful. Kim’s frustration with his craft is palpable, and so is the way he rediscovers his passion through Chay. The writing is wonderfully detailed, every chapter felt like walking through a museum. And tension slowly building between them—unf. 

Sunshine in My Closet by moneskin 

This is an A/B/O AU that is so satisfying to read. Typical hilarious boundary violations (Chay stealing Kim’s clothes, a bewildered Kim handing over a freshly worn outfit, having barely any idea who this strange kid is) characteristic of the AU, but then the story also delves deeper into more serious topics. Chay has a history of abuse from a past alpha that he has to learn how to navigate with Kim, who is incredibly patient and works hard to make Chay feel safe and loved. Overall a very sweet and comforting read. Seriously, this fic makes me melt.

Your Body Feels Like Disrespect by Blue_Jay (@bluejayfiction)

This fic is so funny because it begins with Kim blurting out, in the middle of an Important Mafia MeetingTM, that he and Chay aren’t having sex, and then wanting to die about it. Followed by Kim’s family trying very hard to both support and terrorize him. It’s hilarious, sexy, and one of my favorite reads when I need a pick me up. (Bless Kinn’s determination to be a Good and Supportive Brother, and Vegas for being the Worst Person Ever.) 

In Silent Screams (In Wildest Dreams) by BelladonnaWyck and StratsWrites 

This is definitely a darker fic. There’s DubCon, Kim is generally Sketchy, but it’s very hot. And I love explorations of his character where he isn’t just outwardly psychotic and cruel. This fic shows the kind of dark that I think Kim could have been, if you just tilted his character a little to the left. He still seems very much the way he is in canon, but he’s also… a lot more calculating and cold, sometimes. I love it. 

Forget-me-always by bisexualbard (@bisexualbard-writes)

I cannot sing the praises of this fic enough. I think it’s probably tied for IGTW for my most-read fics. I’ve probably read this one more often in reality, but only bc it’s shorter. But oh my god, does it hurt. Kim gets struck with amnesia post-break up, does a little light stalking, and gets Chay to help him learn/remember who he is. In the process realizes that wow his life sucks, and there’s no way he wants to go back to it. Especially if he’s the kind of person that hurt Chay. He would rather start over. (Ofc, he doesn’t get to). This fic makes me cry, it’s so good 

Coffeehouse Play by AirgodSLV

This is a canon divergence AU that I adore. The KimChay characterization is on point. I love that despite everything going on around them, they also get to be two boys that hang out and play videogames and try to shove each other off the couch while Porsche makes dinner. Given the age difference it’s so easy to make Kim Older and MatureTM, but he’s still a kid, and this story never once forgets that. It felt so honest and true to his character that Kim does have a lot of plans, and he’s very smart, but he’s also still so young, and sometimes shit just goes wrong. 

Want and Need by bisexualbard (@bisexualbard-writes)

God, this fic. T h i s f i c. Post-canon Chay goes to therapy and becomes a camboy (in that order) and it’s delicious. Watching the steady breakdown of his and Porsche’s relationship is so satisfying. Everything one of them does to make things worse feels awful, but is so in character that it’s hard to be mad at them for their decisions. Kim readily giving up control if it means he can be with Chay, and Chay getting a crash course in how to dom. All of it is just. So good. This is such a good fic

Your Look, Through This Lens by WildelyDawn (@wildelydawn)

AU where Chay becomes Kim’s photographer. This fic emotionally hobbled me. Just a fair warning. You will cry. But that said, the ending isn’t nearly as sad as the tags would have you believe! At least in my opinion. I think it’s fairly open/hopeful, and beautiful either way. I love the way this fic shows how Kim balances being Wik while also being part of the mafia. And I love how temperamental he is; always hot and cold, while remaining pretty even as far as how he expresses himself. Always very aloof/detached, just out of reach, with Chay never really sure where he stands/what Kim wants. But at the same time the fic happens just before Kim gets a big break, and the subtle ways he shows his excitement and nerves as things start coming together—it’s wonderful. 

Love’s a Two-Way Dream by giraffeter (@giraffeter)

This fic is dark. Kim atticwife’s Chay and it’s not a good time. But!! It’s not just dark for the sake of it; Kim is a genuine sociopath, yes, but it unfolds slowly. You get a sense of creeping dread as he does things that are just a little bit off, until finally the Big Bad Thing happens. At first he seems normal, playing the part of good and respectful boyfriend. But it just goes downhill from there, and I love every word of it. The ending especially is very satisfying. 

In the Dark of the Night by bisexualbard (@bisexualbard-writes)

Not to recc everything Bard writes, but… This is a rape recovery fic that I feel handles the subject matter incredibly well. There’s no gratuitous rape scenes, and even with the flashbacks, I don’t remember any of them being incredibly detailed. I think Bard handled the fic with incredible respect and grace. This is another one that’ll make you cry. The way Chay handles his past trauma while trying to have a relationship with Kim is so painfully real. And so is the way Kim wants to help him, but doesn’t really know how. But they figure it out together, and it’s amazing. (Also Kim acquires a stabby child in the form of an OC that I adore.) I just love the path Chay's recovery takes in this fic, it's so visceral and relatable. It's all around just. So good. I love this fic for the same reason I love IGTW and it's because both fics show an excellent depiction of recovery.

Chains and Crowns, A Flower Can Both Make by Sweet_William (@sweet-william-writes)

Incredibly Regency AU. Historical AUs are some of my all time favorites, and this is everything I didn’t know I needed. Sweet_William captures the essence of an Austen-esque style while still making this feel like the KinnPorsche characters. Chay is wonderfully feisty, Kim is delightfully complex, and the various family interactions always had me cackling.

Chay sees the future when he touches people. Kim thinks he’s either insane, a spy, or a conman. Oh, and Chay’s visions of Kim? Always sex-related. The shenanigans are endless. What more do you need?? They’re both crazy4crazy and it’s my favorite thing ever. Their banter is snappy and fun, the writing is sexy, and it never once gave me second-hand embarrassment despite Chay’s horrible situations.

The only thing i'm worried is that I don't want to start a series and then finding out in the third bookthat the author made the antiheroic genderbent mao protagonist throw the metaphorical atomic bomb on the japanese because the author is an american descendent of a Chang Kai Shek general and wanted to absolve the yankees to grant herself a career (it worked greatly). One of my favorites was one where cucurucho and cellbit body swap. Can you IMAGINE the chaos that would occur?

Cucurucho is stressing over having an actually emotive face while cellbit is just standing in cucuruchos house going through probably one of his top 3 nightmares.

That would be chaotic and also extremely horrifying.

💻 Do you do research for your fics? What’s the deepest dive you’ve done?

i'm not a huge researcher but i do little bits here and there...most recently for a soft place to land i did some research about japanese customs and also some about child development to check that my sense of what 7 year olds are like was semi-accurate...and that did then lead to me reading a whole book about parenting, but at that point it crossed over from being fic research to just me remembering that i find kids and parenting fascinating

🤔 What is the hardest part of writing fic?

insecurity/the mean bad faith reader who exists in my head. this is the hardest part because it makes everything else harder - fixing problems i've noticed in my work, taking risks/going out of my comfort zone, just taking time to write in general because i have this weird fear that if i go work on something i'll suddenly realise it's irredeemably bad. shame is not conducive to making stuff

i'm also profoundly conflict-averse and fear discourse, and that does definitely affect what i'm willing to post and therefore work on. although i do think the level of bad faith reading i bring to my own work is probably a lot worse than what would happen in reality (and also even if people are doing that, they have almost never felt the need to tell me about it, so it shouldn't really be an issue)

i'm a lot better about this than i used to be!! but it's the biggest roadblock for sure

introspective

this is a thing i did not really realise until people mentioned it in comments, but yeah i do tend to find the most interesting thing about a scenario to be how people are thinking and feeling about it, and my main goal with a piece is often to get across a vivid sense of what it would feel like to be that person in that moment.

this is also why when i've played around with a more distant 3rd person perspective, it hasn't really worked for me. gotta be right up in someone's head

2. grounded

i am truly just cribbing from comments with all of these...this is another thing people pointed out and i'm like yeah! even when i write tropes like bodyswap or de-aging, i tend to take a sort of grounded perspective on it that i really enjoy (even though i also love the wild & zany takes that are more common with those tropes)

there's an interplay of fantasy and realism in hurt/comfort fics in general which i could ramble on about for ages, and i think i'm pretty good at couching fantasies of comfort that are common to a lot of people in a kind of semi-realism that lets you really feel it.

3. succinct

it took me infinitely too long to think of a word that means short but in a good way 😂 i would not say no to suddenly gaining the ability to write 200k plotty epics, but i realised recently that i enjoy reading oneshots and shorter fics more than i do longfic, and i really admire when other writers achieve a lot in a short word count...so it seems kind of silly to deny myself that praise just because it's me, especially when nice people in comments keep telling me it's true

ignore the fact that my current project is 30,000 words of domestic softness. this is an anomaly and should not be counted

in the authors note of this one it's described as "a motherfucking 95 year epic love story of socialism! science fiction! and hard core gay fucking!" so. worth a read for sure.

(12) What fic was the most difficult to write? Did you finish it? Oh gosh, so many of them because I always start to doubt myself, but I'd say The Interview. I was going for the Unreliable Narrator trope but didn't want the reveal to feel deceitful to reader, because it wasn't what you'd expect given all the information the unreliable narrator (Eddie) had. I kept second guessing it, had a little breakdown about it, but finished anyway and I like how it turned out.

(20) Share your favorite ending line This was hard to pick!! It's a bit cheaty, because it's not just the last line, but I really like the ending of Save Max.

So, when [Steve] calls attention to everyone and starts the speech he rehearsed with Eddie, Eddie steps up. Slides his hand into Steve's, gripping it probably to the point of pain, but there. It doesn't matter how they'll react, because Steve loves him. And he loves Steve. (And if he clocks Lucas and Max exchanging money about it, well, he can't even be mad about that.)

(30) What’s something that you want to write in 2024? So many things. I've been working on longer, chaptered fics that I am refusing to post until I'm at least 75% done with them. So, there's going to be a Steve Has Powers AU, a long Space/Sci-fi fic, and a Platonic Stobin Bodyswap AU coming sometime in 2024! Very excited for them :)

hmm... jun and reader from taste of love already do cook together a lot, so i feel like their presents to one another are cute cookware. reader bought jun a heart-shaped pan once and its the thing jun uses whenever he makes pancakes. jun got reader a cast iron pot that kinda looks like a cat and it was the moment that they both admitted they absolutely buy things they'll also use since they share a kitchen

i'm not a huge fan of like. the Space aspect of typical sci-fi settings, or like the science-y, dystopian cyborg-esque technologically-advanced-beyond-reason sci-fi stuff lol but TIMELOOPS???

i am such a sucker for anything having to do with the mind-fuckery of time travel or alternate realities. i will eat that shit up any time. timeloops are my favorite though <3 it's just such a cool way to tell a story - it's funny and goofy! it's sad and lonely! it's horrifying and creates unending existential dread!

i think i'm more ambivalent about body swapping... i haven't read that trope much, but at the mention of selfhood fuckery, i can see the appeal - i love identity crises and characters being forced to reckon with themselves. idk i guess i just like the sanctity of your body being your own ?? but maybe i just haven't read enough to be convinced lol

oh man okay, first of all, i love this compliment so much, because i have one of those brains where i don't really picture things when i'm reading/writing, and so to compensate for that i think a lot about, like, physicality and the concept of being a body in a space to try to capture the images i want to portray in writing. i have no idea if that makes sense to other people but it helps me a lot for achieving the vibes i want in my writing! that ad reinhardt quote that's like you sir are a space too! that's how i think about bodies while writing. and it never stops being cool to think a lot about a writing thing and then have someone tell you they think you write the thing good. so thank you, anon, that's very kind of you to say.

on the bodyswap front! i have definitely discussed and/or heard friends discussing variations on this theme, especially the matthew/brady brother bodyswap plus confused german boyfriends, which would be VERY funny and very cute imo. (sorry to rat crew that i cannot remember with whom this conversation originated, lmao.) bodyswap as a trope in my expereince often leans into the romcomminess of it all — and it's very good for that! — but i think if i were to write it i would want to explore the weird and alienating sensation of being in a foreign body and the extremely fucked-up intimacy of that being a real person's body, who is still there in the world, watching you exist in their body and life.

i think there is an interesting matthew/leon possibility there, especially if it's set in the the post-trade world after matthew has settled into florida, banished the memory of albertan winters from his mind, and become a person who wears a jacket when it's 65 freedom degrees out. something about being borne back ceaslessly into the past.... something about the past being a foreign country....... something about learning a person through the space they've left behind that you're now standing in. idk idk. there's definitely something there though!

Sorry for the long wait ^_^u 16. What makes their stomach turn? They're all toughies! I'm sure most of them could handle things the average person would find creepy or crawl-y. Most of them would agree that whatever degree Parasite is awful, though.

Hiber: To appreciate nature <3 and to take care of basic health needs that's really important too. Snare: Sometimes he doesn't. Wheel: Spite. Psilo: For the thrill of discovery! Every new day is an opportunity to learn plenty of new things! Like "hey, did you know there were a billion spiders under your porch?" Very cool. Train bros: Well, they've got a business to run, don't they? They have to make sure the trains run on time! Lumin: There are always new stories to be collected. Tales of treasure and tales of woe, of fortune and of fate. Parasite: "Oh boy! I can't wait to make other people's lives miserable! On purpose!"

I wholeheartedly love character design exercises and this was one of my favorites.

I have plenty of concept art for these guys lol. I think Hiber, Wheel, and Steam are the only ones that basically didn't change too much from their initial concepts.

Design notes -

Hiber was a lot skinnier before, but she has a lot more meat on her bones now bc I wanted her to fit more into her hibernating theme. Gotta have enough meat survive the winter.

Snare was always gonna be big and tall and imposing, but it took a lot more finangling than I first thought to finalize his design. His earlier concepts had a more armored and ragged look. One cool idea that I scrapped was that he'd have his head and hands in a pillory, but he had extra arms on his back that he could use instead. Another one was that he’d carry around a giant coffin and smack people around with it the same way Puzzle used his compass. Those were overhauled bc they leaned into Specter a bit too much, and felt incohesive with his theming. I ended up taking more design notes from BodySwap Specter since they had a bit more design overlap with Puzzle. In was a fun decision in the end bc I think that caused him to look a little like Luan too.

I think I had a pollution theme going on in Lumin’s early concepts. He was and still is based off of siphonophores so I imagined he would steer around some long train of boats absolutely filled with human garbage and human treasures, but underneath they’d be attached to some gigantic eldritch sea monster. I think his earlier concepts had mechanical arms for some reason. I think I’ve solidified him into being a vaguely eldritch creature cosplaying as a goofy pirate trope, but his design itself is still a bit of a work in progress.

Coal and Steam were supposed to be one guy, but I couldn’t decide between making the one guy a conductor or an engineer so I had to split them up. I don’t think they changed too much from their initial designs except for some tweaks, like giving Coal a belt and fixing his hat, or shaving off a few inches from Steam.

Wheel’s design is mainly based off bikers and medieval jousters. One thing that didn’t make it in was her also being a cowboy(?????). I got rid of that pretty quickly bc trying to fit too many concepts into one character would be really messy, but I mourn the fact that I couldn’t figure out how to fit in wheel spurs in her boots. Her final design didn’t stray too far from her first concept, but some stuff was reworked.

The funny thing about Psilo is that I specifically chose Plague, Spore, and Prism as his components bc they had a lot of similar design elements. That turned out to be more of a challenge rather than a convenience bc I had to actively work to make Psilo Not look like one guy over the other. He still looks too much like Plague Knight, but I will keep convincing myself he is not a Plague clone. I wanted to go for a witch-y design for him at first, and I settled on that for a while. I don’t really remember why I went in a different direction but I guess it’s bc I wanted to represent Prism and Spore more in the design. I think his final helmet was actually based on concept art of Plague Knight from the SK artbook where he had a bottom visor that made him look like he had a big toothy grin, which was really cute and convenient for incorporating Spore’s visor.

A Lot happened with Parasite. I was gonna settle on "grouchy old man" Parasite, but he was being developed to be used in a friend's DnD campaign as an enemy and said friend characterized him very differently to that idea, so I wanted to make him fittingly look unhinged. The way I draw him now vs his current "official" render is a bit different, but that mostly comes down to me getting a better idea of his proportions rather than any significant design changes. Sorry about how disorganized this concept compilation is. I'll try to organize these by character later.

Learning Curve by aibidil: @aibidil Probably one of the best-plotted Ron/Hermione smut fics I’ve ever read. Who wouldn’t wanna bodyswap and jerk off with each other’s bodies??

Like an Animal. by sophiesnowpeas: A very animalistic portrayal of Werewolf!Nick’s changing feelings for Abi. Love the rawness in his POV. 

Survival 101 by KariAnn1222: One of my favorite Ron/Hermione fics set during Deathly Hallow’s where there are hot tempers, cold temps, huddling for warmth, and best friends to lovers trope that I go weak in the knees for. Just perfection.

Wall, I’ll Be F*cked by fic_appointment: Din Darjin/Reader where you’re a bounty, and he’s the bounty hunter. Stuck in the wall trope that makes me all warm and gooey inside. Love the spicy reader and Din’s attempt to be a gentleman.

The House of Winter by Hotpie: Sansa/Sandor. This one just sorta tore apart at my chest and left me wide-eyed and wondering what the fuck to do with myself for the rest of the day. Very angsty, end-of-the-world smut that’s not happy at all, and I love it.

Party Time by beastlybfs: So, I got a thing for Orcs, Trolls, Ogres, and so forth. I’m not a huge fan of the movie Bright, but I love the Orcs in it. This one has the gang leader Dorghu fucking the reader in it, and it’s just… so fucking hot. I wish there was a follow-up with the Original Male Character cause he was actually really sweet, and I wanna see him and the reader have tons of babies. <3

Writing goals for 2023: Finish Fortune Teller and hop on my massive list of Eddie asks cause I’m living and breathing for that man. Also, I wanna finish Kinktober since the last few years have been a bit of a mess for me around that time of year.
