Day 19 - Emergency Room

Fao loved being at home with his family. Christmas was his favourite time of year, too. He supposed that was not having much of a childhood, but he was still like a kid in the buildup, enjoying watching the lights and decorations going up. He loved the cold, too, the frosty mornings as they got closer to the end of December. 

In his final year at uni now, he was so close to qualifying he could almost taste it. That came with its own stress, trying to sort out dates for Sandhurst and planning his career. Not to mention having to deal with all the exams, the pressure, the placements. So when Christmas rolled around that year he was thrilled, already tired despite only having been at uni since September. 

Getting home was a relief, able to put aside studying and placement and everything and just focus on spending time with family for a few days. It was Finn’s birthday, too, which meant extra festivities and spending time with his little brother, which Fao adored anyway.

They’d started the tradition of going down to his big house for Christmas, which was nice. Fao could fill it with good memories again, and it meant they had all the countryside to enjoy over the holiday. Apollo even loved it, though he wasn’t allowed out of the house. It was big enough he didn’t need to, often caught chasing moths upstairs or curled up in front of the fireplace. They’d bought a couple of big trees, one for the hall and one for the living room, and Fao and Finn had had great fun decorating them together. 

Come Christmas Eve, Fao was doing some prep for Christmas Dinner, making life easier for them the next day. He had festive songs blaring, singing along as he chopped veg. He’d had a glass or two of mulled wine, and was certainly feeling festive. 

He’d set his knife down to grab another carrot, but knocked it off of with his elbow. Acting on instinct alone, he went to catch it, trying not to let it hit the floor - he didn’t want to have to wash it up. But he kept his knives sharp, and as he caught the knife the sharp blade bit into his skin and he dropped it with a clatter. 

“Fuck!” He exclaimed, blood welling up in the cut almost immediately, dripping on the floor surprisingly fast. He quickly ran it under the tap, swearing as it made the pain worse. He was bleeding a decent amount, and the cut looked deep. Shakily, he reached for a tea towel, wrapping it around his hand and picking up the knife. Last thing they needed was someone else getting hurt. Feeling more than just tipsy, he leaned against the counter, forcing himself to take a deep breath. 

Sheila had been pottering around the house, making sure the place was completely perfect for Christmas day, when she heard Fao's shout. For once, it wasn't Finn, but that didn't make it better. 

"Fao? What have you done?" She called, rushing through.

“I just cut myself.” He mumbled.

She sighed. "Let me see?"

He delicately peeled back the tea towel. “It’s deep.” He said. “Tried to catch a knife.”

She winced. "Oh, Fao. That's going to need stitches."

“I know.” He grumbled. “Fucking hurts.”

"Come on, I've not had a glass yet."

“‘M not sure I can move.” Fao admitted, aware the counter was basically holding him up. He was shaking, he knew, but that was the shock more than anything. 

"Alright, that's okay. Let’s sit on the floor for a mo, eh?" She gently steered him down, pulling him close. "You're okay."

He nodded. “It surprised me, is all.”

"Of course it did. It would have surprised me."

He forced a deep breath. “Yeah. Whoops.”

She had to laugh. "That's about right."

“Shouldn’t have tried to catch it. Didn’t want to wash it up.”

"You're an idiot. I love you, but all I've got is idiots in this house, the cat included."

“Sounds about right. And now I’ve gotta sit in A&E all evening on fucking Christmas Eve.” 

"Hopefully we won't be there forever."

The shakiness was starting to subside a little, replaced by pain. “Help me up? Sooner we go sooner we get home.”

"Take another minute?"

“Mm.”

"Just so you don't fall on me."

“It’s jus’ the shock, I feel okay.”

"I know, I know."

He sighed. “Sorry.”

"Don't be. It was either gonna be you or Finn."

“Didn’t mean to scare you.”

"The joys of having kids."

Fao managed a laugh, and then the pair of them got up off the floor. He was pleasantly surprised he didn’t pass out when he stood, but felt relatively okay, and quickly swapped the used tea towel for a clean one. They’d probably be waiting a while. 

He leaned on Sheila on the way to the car, and again from the car to A&E. Once they were checked in and sat, he rested his head against her, feeling tired and miserable.

"You're gonna be okay." She murmured, holding him close. "We'll be home before Christmas morning."

“Hope so. It hurts.” He said softly, glad of the comfort.

"Want me to go see if you can have anything?"

“Mm. I don’t know, they’ll probably just want me to wait.”

"Are you sure?"

“I just want to go home.” 

"I know."

He sighed, silent for a moment. “Mum?”

"What's wrong?"

“Love you. Sorry you always end up in A&E waiting rooms wit’ me.”

She hummed. "As long as you're still here, I don’t care where we are."

“Feels like I spend my life in A&E sometimes. At least this makes a difference from London, change of scenery an’ all.”

She had to laugh at that. "Oh, I guess that's true."

“Never a dull moment.”

"With you three? Not a chance."

✦ Assuming he and Dr. Mrs. The Monarch agreed to having an open marriage, you were the perfect addition for him. ✦ You and Sheila tag team each other when it comes to trying to talk him out of making rash decisions (spoiler: it never works). ✦ He's an accident-prone person, so he's going to get a lot of scrapes and bruises. Some even come out of nowhere and it honestly worries you. No matter how or where they come from, you always do your best to patch him up. You love seeing his face turn red after you kiss his "boo boos" to make them better. ✦ He is so goofy. You can't count how many times he's made you giggle (or cringe-) from doing idiotic stuff. ✦ Such a smug bastard too. Pulls this face after each time he somehow manages to make you blush. ✦ Weird pet names for everyone!! His main ones for you are "pookie," "shnookums," and "sugar wings." ✦ He's scrawny AND ticklish. Especially in his ribs. You barely have to touch him and he'll burst out in a giggling fit. This one time he was going on about Dr. Venture and you accidentally brushed his side which made him cover his mouth to prevent him howling in laughter. ✦ He can be mad annoying from time to time, going on speeches and tirades. His main focus is causing the downfall of Rusty. You'll have to remind him that he has you and Sheila to think about. ✦ You help him with his anger issues too. You'll talk, give him space, listen, whatever it takes for him to calm down. He's so grateful for this considering the times he's lashed out and did stupid things. ✦ He likes to be in the middle when in bed. There's just something about being between the two loves of his life and having his arms around you both.

modern day steve and eddie would LOVE to watch all those cooking competition shows together — those would be like their very own Saturday Night Football, but better.

they'd smoosh together onto the tiny couch in eddie's living room, a bowl of popcorn in between them, and they'd pick one to put on.

steve's favorite would be chopped. eddie's favorite would be cutthroat kitchen (he'd LOVE how maniacal alton brown is). they'd both love guy's grocery games.

both of them are pretty decent cooks, but they certainly are no michelin star, award winning chefs or restaurateurs. but that doesn't stop them from shouting at the contestants onscreen. they get really into it too.

"sheila! sheila, what the fuck are you thinking? those ingredients do NOT go together!"

"jerry that is WAY too much salt, that's all the judges are going to taste!"

"what the fuck is your flavor palate supposed to be suzanne?"

"oh god, frank! you have one minute left! do NOT go for the ice cream machine!"

they'd always latch onto their favorite contestants, talking shit to one another about the other's favorite. they'd cheer and celebrate when their favorites moved on or even won, and they'd boo and throw popcorn at the TV screen when their favorite lost and got booted off.

it always inspires them immediately after watching too. they're hungry for lunch, so eddie pulls three random ingredients from the fridge and tells steve to make something out of them. or they try to recreate the dishes that look good (and sometimes the ones that look bad too lol) from the episodes. they hit the grocery store and pick out all kinds of fun new things to try to cook with. sometimes they're successful and it tastes really good, but other times the meal turns out to be a total disaster and they have to end up ordering in.

This isn't my most thought out dump but i dunno it just happened in late night spur so...

tim is literally the sacrifice hes so similar to Jason I’m sick.

Jason is like the victim the you can’t save everyone character someone will get hurt someone will be angry and Tim is the same but like the opposite. he is the victim but he kinda chooses to be? He puts himself in the position because he feels his hurt will create the best outcome I guess.

It’s like while when Jason gets hurt he feels like he’s been wronged—Tim gets hurt and he’s like “yep this was supposed to happen haha”

In a moment of trying to save his mom (boo sheila boooooo) Jason becomes the unwilling victim, a tragically heroic death. Jason was just trying to save his mom and he died and he was angry at Bruce because of his inaction after.

In a moment of trying to save everyone Tim chooses to be the one who’ll probably die. It’s not that there was “no way he could've not been hurt” it’s that “putting everyone before me at the cost of myself is just what I have to do”, im not sure how to put this, tim is a victim but he allows himself to be. He isn’t even angry at Bruce because he wants himself to be the only one getting hurt in some bullshit way of negating the damage arghhsjs

Damn I love Jason and Tim but I wish people didn’t treat them like polar opposites. They are two guys doin their best and getting the worst, they just have different feelings about it.

I absolutely enjoyed reading your analysis and take on why people tend to put most of the blame on Tim rather than taking into account that other characters are just as culpable. You really help me understand why Jason stans might resent Tim for victim-blaming Jason more than the other characters (although it is still them showing their double-standard thought process at the end of the day). In truth, no one is innocent in the situation. Everyone is culpable to some degree for blaming a child for his own demise, and its frankly disgusting.

its one of those things thats really interesting both in universe and from a meta perspective bc. blaming jason for his own death when sheila sold him out to the joker who then murdered them both, which dc wrote/illustrated/published, which they decided to do because of the results a fricking READER POLL... its so silly lmao. and by making it jasons fault the blame doesnt rest with batman, for having a robin in the first place, or dc, for writing and publishing the story. absolutely fascinating tapestry of blame and fault here on all levels

i was thinking some more about it though and i do think its got some to do with tims personality and demeanor as well. hes a perfectionist and a control freak and there are times when he expresses that if someone cant hack it to tims (arbitrary) standards they shouldn't be doing it at all, that kind of thing. and this is something bruce and dick both do as well, bruce is pretty famous for it even, but they're also both like... i mean we already talked about bruce in the last ask but on top of that hes like. scary competent and intimidating. like. hes batman! and with dick, dick is the first robin, hes *the* nightwing, dick was canonically this keystone figure for the new earth dcu hero community... hes a big fucking deal yknow. in-universe people listen to them, and for good reason, and out of universe a lot of the time reading it its like. Well they'd know! and by contrast tim does not have that kind of authority he just acts like be does... like hes made a solid name for himself by the time the reboot hits but absolutely not on dick or bruces level. so when Tim says something about like you shouldn't be doing this you're going to get yourself killed its like. who is this squeaky little toddler and why is he telling me what to do. like its like "who died and made you robin" except the answer to that is uh. Jason todd.

anyway yeah i like to rotate this as an aspect of characterization for everyone involved bc in like. the version that lives in my head the narrative doesnt present them as Right so it becomes *about* the tragedy, *about* grief and the way sometimes a story gets warped in retelling, about coping by putting sense in something senseless... but. it gets a lot less fun when youre reading something and the story itself is like "Yes this 14 or 15 year old only died bc he broke the rules he got what was coming to him & he deserved it :)" loud booing i dont care for that at all.

dick is also interesting bc hes the only character i can think of other than leslie who blames bruce at any point for jasons death, which i neglected to mention in my other ask. (its kind of a big topic and in my defense you were just askinf about bruce Alfred and tim... sorry dickie ily) like dick took more work to convince that a new robin was necessary than bruce did and dick like... dick was so angry and heartsick and guilty over jasons death and all those feelings just went *everywhere* including at himself. so its absolutely a lot more palatable coming from dick and-- i mean i mentioned demeanor earlier. tim tends to be either very blunt or very sharp and he is NOT known for phrasing things diplomatically, like, at all. dick might be thinking about the mistakes he imagines Jason making on the road to his death but what he'll say out loud is usually smth like "he wasn't ready," and its also a lot more palatable coming from dick bc you *know* hes also thinking he himself Should Have trained jason more himself or done this or that other thing.

Noba landed silently on the roof before leaping to another one. His gaze was set ahead, to his destination. A sudden pressure unlike any he had ever felt before sent him slamming into the ground.

Noba struggled to even lift his head. The soft click of heels filled his ears and he managed to look up.

A young girl looked over him, an impassive look on her face. She wore a Victorian era pink dress, a pink frilly parasol and pink Victorian era shoes. She had long pink hair tied up in pigtails on either side of her head.

The power she was radiating was enough to send shivers down Noba's spine. She walked forward, heels clicking against the shingles of the roof and stepped down hard on his hand. The pressure made it impossible for Noba to even cry out. He gritted his teeth in pain and she ground her heel deeper into his hand.

"You must be Noba!" she said, "I've heard about you from the butterflies!"

Noba simply glared at her. She hummed and tutted.

"That is not very nice manners. When you're talking to nobility it is nice to speak and look respectfully. I must teach you a lesson," she said.

She raised her hand and Noba's body moved to his knees all on its own. His shoulders still felt like there was an impossible weight on them. She closed her umbrella and raised it. She slapped him across the face with it, the tip of it cutting his skin and tearing his hood.

Noba grunted as blood dripped down his face. She hummed, pleased with herself and reopened her parasol.

"Guards, please grab him, I would like to invite him for tea," she said.

Two large creatures grabbed Noba's arms and hauled him up, dragging him towards the girl. She laughed and flicked her hand. A large white door materialized in front, swinging open. Noba was dragged inside.

It was a Victorian style house with modern tech scattered around. There was a white table with a pink frilly tablecloth with three chairs in the center of a small garden to the left. Many assortments of flowers and plants (some even Noba had ever seen before) were scattered around in an orderly fashion.

The minions marched him over to one of the chairs and forced him into it. Noba was just about to run when the girl took a seat and spoke.

"You're in my realm now," she said, "Your powers have no effect. You should sit down. If you are kind and polite, I will let you go,"

Noba, still tense, sat back down. She smiled at him.

"Take off your hood-mask, it is bad manners," she said

Noba shifted, face flushing as a wave of shyness overtook him. He removed it anyways. Noba clenched his fists tight, trying to hide how embarrassed he was. The girl in front of him nodded, content.

"You know my name, may I know yours," said Noba once he had found his voice.

"Oh my, I completely forgot, oh what bad manners. My name is Sheila, pleasure," she bowed her head, smiling wide, "Now let's start this tea party, shall we?"

She clapped her hands and a man in a butler outfit appeared beside her.

"Yes, madam," he said

"Please prepare some tea and sweets for us," she instructed

"As you wish, madam," then he was gone.

Noba messed with his hands, hating the way she stared so intently at him made him feel like an object.

"You are quite cute. Maybe I should make you a doll and keep you in my collection forever," she said

Noba stiffened.

"I like the form I'm in now, though, miss," he said, trying to be as respectful as he could

She squealed and reached over, pinching his cheek. He squeezed his eyes shut and tried to ignore it, letting her do it just in case she took offense to it.

"Oh don't worry, I'd make a doll out of this form. Then I can move you however I want and dress you up. You can serve me!" she said

"I'm sorry, I'll h-have to decline. I would miss my friends," he managed, stuttering halfway through but finishing off strong.

"Boo," she said, pouting.

At that moment, the butler returned with tea and sweets. He placed the cup down in front of Noba and poured it. Noba watched the drink like a hawk, studying the tea pot to see if he could spot one of those pots with the hidden compartments that could hold poison or something. He couldn't really see anything, but he still gazed at the tea cup suspiciously.

"I didn't poison it," the butler said

"Drink, it's rude not to," Sheila said, cheerful as ever.

Noba hesitated and took the tea cup. The cup it had been poured into was an old Victorian era tea cup.

"This is a lovely tea set," managed Noba, unable to hide the tremble in his voice

"Oh thank you!" Sheila said, "I got it from this lovely shop in London. It, sadly, doesn't exist anymore but they sold the most beautiful pieces,"

Noba slowly raised the tea cup to his lips, hands trembling. He took a sip and placed the cup down. He swallowed, the hot liquid slid down his throat. It happened instantly. His vision titled and he fell out of his chair, hitting the ground with a thud.

"You are the first person, human or otherwise, who actually drank the tea! You are such a kind guest!" Sheila said, smiling wide.

Noba's vision was getting darker and darker as Sheila took another sip of her tea.

"You were a good guest and you shall be rewarded for it," Sheila said, "Give him the antidote,"

Noba felt someone lift him up. Something dripped down his throat and his vision cleared. He blinked multiple times before slowly sitting up, gazing weakly at Sheila, who was smiling wide.

"Why don't you stay for dinner," she said, a grin forming on her face

Noba's face dropped.

Ichigo landed on the ground, panting hard as the Hollow's body disintegrated. He lowered his sword.

"Good work," said Rukia

Renji dusted himself off while Chad and Orihime walked closer to Ichigo.

Sudden pressure slammed into all of them and they all were crushed into the ground.

"What the hell," gritted out Ichigo, body struggling against the sudden pressure.

A white door appeared in front of them. It slowly creaked open. The girl who walked out wasn't like anyone Ichigo had ever felt before. Her whole aura was one of power. Walking behind her was a large man in a butler outfit. Over his shoulder was a limp Noba.

"Noba!" exclaimed Ririn, "Let him go you meanie!"

"Okay," said the girl, cheerfully

She signaled to her butler and the man threw Noba onto the ground. Noba bounced on the ground before rolling to a stop in front of a grounded Ichigo.

"Bye-bye!" she said, waving as she and the butler returned through the white door and it vanished behind them.

The pressure vanished and Ichigo rose quickly, darting forward and kneeling beside Noba. He gently shook Noba, trying to rouse the motionless mod-soul.

"Hey, Noba, come on, wake up!" exclaimed Ichigo.

Noba groaned weakly, eyelids fluttering, but he did not wake.

"Let's get him to Urahara's," said Orihime

Chad hauled Noba onto his back and the mod-soul didn't even stir. The group took off to Urahara's place.
