'Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" is set to be one of the biggest (non-"Barbie") films of the summer, a grand historical drama with a vast A-List cast and intense exploration of one of humanity's greatest errors. It's a chance for Nolan, a filmmaker never short of ambition, to stretch himself even further as a storyteller, but it's also a rare opportunity for its title star to take on a leading role. Cillian Murphy is a Nolan ensemble staple, having played the Scarecrow in the "Dark Knight" trilogy and made appearances in "Inception" and "Dunkirk."
The Irish actor and "Peaky Blinders" favorite has long been an underrated presence on screens big and small, having spent well over two decades establishing himself as a striking character actor and reliable talent. He's made horror films with Wes Craven, fought zombies in "28 Days Later," romanced Scarlett Johansson in "The Girl With a Pearl Earring" and told stories of the Irish War of Independence in Ken Loach's "The Wind That Shakes the Barley." He's done it all. He's even dealt with the peril of an atomic weapon and the threat of mass extinction on Earth in a movie before! Thanks to Danny Boyle and "Sunshine", Murphy is familiar with this quandary.
Sunshine is an apocalyptic horror sci-fi
In between his zombie horror "28 Days Later" and the Oscar-winning drama "Slumdog Millionaire," Danny Boyle aimed for the stars. Screenwriter Alex Garland, with whom Boyle had worked on his messy adaptation of "The Beach," took inspiration from the likes of "2001: A Space Odyssey," Ridley Scott's "Alien" and the Russian classic "Solaris" for his jaunt towards the center of our solar system. In "Sunshine," it is the sun itself that is dying. With it, so will all life on Earth perish as the planet's temperature drops beyond the means of human habitation. Eight astronauts from around the world have been tasked with flying towards the sun on the spaceship Icarus II and planting a bomb on it that they hope will reignite its solar fury. As many a sci-fi horror featuring people in enclosed spaces floating through the vast nothingness can attest, it doesn't take long for things to go wrong.
"Sunshine" has an enviable good cast, the kind of ensemble of character actors and future leading icons that would put most films to shame. Alongside Murphy, who plays the lead physicist Robert Capa, are a pre-Captain America Chris Evans, Rose Byrne, Michelle Yeoh, Cliff Curtis from "Fear the Walking Dead," and Benedict Wong of "Doctor Strange" fame. To have the cast form a tight bond, Boyle had this ensemble live together for several months and undergo space training and scuba diving. He also took them on a tour of a nuclear submarine to give them a sense of the claustrophobic living conditions of real astronauts, and even sent them up on a zero-G plane to experience weightlessness. Murphy worked with physicist Brian Cox (not that one) so that he could fully understand the awesome scale of the bomb required to make the sun work once more. He found the experience of making "Sunshine" so revealing that it made him an atheist!
Why Sunshine is so terrifying
Many scientists grumbled over the inaccuracies of "Sunshine," from slow-motion movement during weightlessness to whether or not a bomb really could reignite the sun. For Alex Garland, such details were beside the point, although both he and Boyle did hire a number of advisors to shape the science of the film into something believable. The real power of "Sunshine" is in its portrayal of isolation among its astronauts. The crew of Icarus II are shaken, both by the magnitude of their mission and the sheer psychological terror of being stuck in space for an extended period of time. As a viewer, you feel entrapped in the space this ensemble shares, made all the more stifling by Boyle's refusal to cut back to scenes on Earth that are common in this genre. Everything is designed to make you feel trapped, including the space suits that have a post-box-sized slit to see through rather than a full-face visor (the suit was nicknamed Kenny after the character from "South Park" because of this choice.)
The other recurring theme is an age-old one: science versus faith. The mission of Icarus II is stridently atheistic, one of pure logic designed to do for humanity what nobody else can or will do. They are following in the footsteps of Icarus I, which went missing seven years prior while trying to deliver its own bomb to Earth. When the crew discover this lost ship, they find its crew charred to death save one astronaut, Pinbacker (Mark Strong playing, of course, a villain). After years of loneliness and untreated first-degree facial burns, Pinbacker has gone mad and tries to sabotage the Icarus II mission, claiming that God (meaning the sun) has told him to send all of humanity to Heaven. This third-act frenzy makes "Sunshine" a more traditional horror film than its preceding parts, and it does become less satisfying as a result (although there is a moment where Pinbacker has the skin pulled from his arm that is truly horrifying).
Sunshine is more relevant than ever
Despite positive reviews, "Sunshine" didn't inspire audiences, and only grossed around $32 million from a modest $40 million budget. Reviews generally agreed that the third act was weak and let down the rest of the film's more metaphysical approach to the sci-fi horror genre. It didn't hurt anyone's careers, least of all Cillian Murphy, who went on to a strong career in film and TV that has culminated in his acclaimed role in "Oppenheimer." It's a movie that makes excellent use of his unique face and ability to convey a blend of unnerving and empathic (which is perfect for J. Robert Oppenheimer, the man who became Death, the destroyer of worlds.)
Audiences did eventually find their way to "Sunshine." Its philosophical terror remains potent, arguably more so as we experience the disintegrating effects of climate change in real-time. Much like its cinematic predecessors, "2001: A Space Odyssey" and "Solaris," "Sunshine" acutely captures the gargantuan scale of the galaxy and how it cannot help but overwhelm you, the mere human being, trying to be its equal. In the film's first two-thirds, the enormity of the mission is inescapable. If these mere mortals do not succeed, billions of people will die and that is a weight that smothers them, as it would for any of us.
Ultimately, we are but specks that populate a slightly larger speck floating through the vast nothingness of the universe. When we confront that painful reality, especially as non-believers in an omnipotent deity, it's understandably tough to deal with. It can break you. Yet there is also awe here. The astronauts are left dumbfounded by the sight of the sun so up close. It's no wonder that Pinbacker gazes upon it and sees the face of God. We are but debris in the grand scheme of life and "Sunshine" nails that sensation, but it also believes in fighting to survive amongst it all. There is hope amid the desolation, and that's worth saving.'

Sealab 2021 #29: “Meet Beck Bristow” | December 14, 2003 - 11:15 PM | S03E09
They should’ve just not aired this. Hollywood Actor Beck Bristow (dot com) shows up to Sealab to do some research for a role. He acts the way an arrogant, self-absorbed movie star would act. Then he leaves. That’s basically it. Okay, there’s a little plot: the crew is sorta vying for a technical advisor position on his new project. But they don’t make that much of it. It’s a thin premise that allows them to make some not-very-original jokes about Hollywood-types.
The jokes about Hollywood are completely toothless. Compare this with “Tourist Season,” where alcoholics, the obese, children with learning disabilities, and all of middle-America in general are all treated with disdain. Ironic disdain? I can’t really tell, to be honest. In this episode the rich and powerful Hollywood actor is in Sealab’s satirical cross-hairs. And how do the rich and powerful Hollywood elite fare in this? Well, they basically get their hair mused up a bit and called “knucklehead” as though a parent were endearingly ribbing their kid for doing something mildly stupid.
Brian Bloom is the voice of Beck Bristow, which I’m not sure I ever bothered learning before. A dying Harry Goz is the voice of Captain Murphy, which makes this one of the most conceptually ghoulish episodes of the entire series. They inexplicably put a deep-sea diving helmet on Murphy just so that they could filter his voice as though it’s coming out of a com-link or something. You can really hear the not-wellness in Harry’s voice, and it’s a bummer. All to make tepid jokes about Hollywood guys.
This episode strives to have a point-of-view (could end sentence here) of someone who works closely with these Hollywood types and knows all too well what they’re all like. But it comes off like a teenager’s approximation of what Hollywood is like based on watching other movies and TV shows with similar “insider” jokes. The writers must’ve binge-watched “Action” staring Jay Mohr and thought “hey let’s do a tepid version of that”. Just like the theme goes, even a dog can shake hands/write an episode of Sealab.
This episode also had the pretensions of having a website made for it: hollywoodactorbeckbristow.com. You’ll have to visit archive.org to see it. Last year it actually re-directed to Sealab 2021′s landing page on Adult Swim’s website. Now it doesn’t even load. It seems like In it’s final years of existence it just re-directed to Sealab 2021′s landing page. Maybe it will again some day. The dream would be to snake it and have it re-direct to this write-up. Anyway, it’s mildly interesting to click around on it. There was a “blog” on there which updated sporadically until about early 2004 when it was completely abandoned. It’s insane to think anyone thought that this joke had legs beyond airing on TV once. But if you wanna make it in show business you gotta try out some wacky ideas like make a website for a fictional character or force an elderly cast-member to work from his death bed.
MAIL BAG
Kon writes:
It may seem like Adult Swim spared us a Seth Green Space Ghost, but in reality Space Ghost has inflicted more Seth Green on the public than Seth MacFarlane, Harry Elfont, and Deborah Kaplan combined; Seth Green pitched Robot Chicken during his Space Ghost interview and the rest as we say is history. This isn't irony or an own or me doing a disinformation presented as truth joke like I like to do, it is true. It's real.
Damn, I did not know this. Well, the difference between a Seth Green Space Ghost and Robot Chicken is that I’d feel compelled to watch a Seth Green Space Ghost by virtue of the fact that it’s Space Ghost. With Robot Chicken I can simply not watc--(realizes I am writing this on a blog where I promise to watch every Adult Swim original and this includes Robot Chicken) god fucking damnit.
James Corden's a nice bloke. Met him once at a CVS (that is the british equivalent of a Fred Meyer, your favorite store )
Hey come on. First of all he can’t possibly be nice. Is CVS British?? They are here too you buttmunch. God, you are being too nasty for this. I am pissed off now.
I'm thinking of getting the new Popeye's chicken nuggets
Good for you. Do me a big favor and don’t send me your review of them okay pal
Crispy, crunchy, flavorful, you see they got that dense breading that their regular chicken has. They really aren't playing around. And the white meat is seasoned well and the dipping sauces are pretty good. Nothing stellar with the dipping sauces but they get the job done. The real star is the nuggets themselves and I'm giving them, The Popeyes Chicken Nuggets, Five Outlaw Stars these are pretty incredible you get 8 in a pack and they are quite tasty.
Shut up!
Without rewatching any of the episodes who is your favorite celebrity guest spot on Tim and Eric Awesome Show and/or Tom Goes?
This is remarkably difficult, because I tend to think not that favorably off the celebrity guests. Do I count comedy people that are sorta regulars? Will Forte is too frequent of a guest star, for example. John C. became very regular and shouldn’t count. I really, REALLY love that one joke in Fred Armisen’s Hobby Holes bit that’s nearly impossible to describe via text where he is quoting a letter he received and they mock up a graphic with just that one line followed the closing of the letter, even though there was more after that. Christ, I’ll find it on Youtube. Okay, it’s this. I guess that’s my answer.

Note: Top ten sexiest characters, part eleven. Almost forgot to make one of these. I passed eight hundred followers last month.
10. HAL 9000 (Douglas Rain) from 2001: A Space Odyssey
It’s the voice. Stupid sexy corrupt A.I.
9. the Scorpion (Marc Senter) from The Devil’s Carnival
Charismatic and manipulative greaser.
8. Richard B. Riddick (Vin Diesel) from Pitch Black
Badass and really crass.
7. Cam Johnson (Daniel Ryan Egan) from Mayhem, Murder, and Monsters
Why is the best Crypt TV character a cordial pretty boy and not one of their monsters?
6. Tommy Jarvis (Thom Matthews) from Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives
Jason came back to life because he was struck by lightning. Jason came out of his grave to grab that Jarvis b00ty.
5. Charles Brady (Brian Krause) from Sleepwalkers
Step 1: Get Mrs. Brady out of the way. Step 2: Convince him to stop being a cherry hound. Step 3: Adopt a dog?
4. Alex Browning (Devon Sawa) from Final Destination
Prettier than most final girls.
3. Hughie Campbell (Jack Quaid) from The Boys
Does exactly what I’d want my boyfriend to do if I was the victim of (wo)manslaughter.
2. John Murphy (Richard Harmon) from The 100
Has both the mortality and morality of a cockroach.
1. Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) from Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Brainwashed super soldiers can get it.
Note: Previous list. John Murphy is the best character. He’s just objectively better than everyone else on The 100. Also, slasher victims > slasher killers.

Netflix's Vikings: Valhalla cast includes actors and actresses who should be familiar to many TV viewers. The historical drama series takes place 100 years after the events of the popular History Channel show Vikings and chronicles the lives of several real-life Scandinavian warriors. Vikings: Valhalla doesn't have an official release date but will premiere sometime in 2021.
Vikings: Valhalla focuses on the end of the Viking era as Christianity takes over Scandinavia. When a religious Viking named Torsen survives a massacre led by King Æthelred the Unready, he forms a romance with a deeply anti-Christian woman named Freydís Eiríksdóttir. Vikings: Valhalla sets up a war between religious progressives and Scandinavians who cling to the past.

The Vikings: Valhalla main cast includes an ensemble lineup. Some performers already have loyal followings due to prominent roles in mainstream television, while others are mostly known for work in their native homelands. Just as Vikings helped launch the careers of so many actors and actresses, the Netflix follow-up will similarly do the same.
Tumblr media
Sam Corlett stars as Leif Eriksson, a famous Icelander who arrived in North America several hundred years before Christopher Columbus. In Vikings: Valhalla, he's framed as an outsider character who values family and old pagan beliefs. Netflix has teased that Leif will introduce audiences to a Viking world "in the throes of violent change." Corlett portrays Caliban in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. He also appeared as Young Luke in the 2020 film The Dry.
Tumblr media
Frida Gustavsson co-headlines as Freydis Eriksdotter, Leif's pagan sister who values the ways of the Old Gods. After experiencing various tragedies, Frida forms a romance with a religious man and leads an uprising against Christians. Actress Katia Winter portrayed Freydis Eriksdotter in DC's Legends of Tomorrow. Gustavsson also starred as Vuxna Thea in the TV series Dröm and may be familiar to Netflix viewers as Ma from The Witcher season 1. She recently appeared as Clara in the 2020 series Partisan.
Tumblr media
Leo Suter appears as Harald Sigurdsson, a nobleman who is one of the last Viking berserkers. Due to his charming ways, he's able to bridge the gap between Vikings and Christians, or at least that's his intent. Suter portrayed Young Stringer in Sanditon and Captain Bill Lauder in The Liberator. He also appeared as Drummond in Victoria and Daniel Beecham in Beecham House.

Berlin portrayed Julia Weigert in Einstein and Charlotte Lindemann in Breaking Even. She also appeared as Charlotte Montrose in the movies Ruby Red and Sapphire Blue.

David Oakes appears as Earl Godwin, the chief counsellor to the King of England. Based on the man's real life story, he seems to be the Littlefinger of Vikings: Valhalla. Coming Attractions March 2021
Tumblr media
As usual, we present monthly previews of new movies being released. These are the movies that will be hitting your local cinemas (and streaming services) this month:
March 5th
Moxie (March 3rd) - Amy Poehler directs and stars in this film for Netflix based on a 2017 novel of the same name. The film follows a teenager who sparks a school-wide revolution by following in the footsteps of her rebellious mother, played by Poehler.
Raya and the Last Dragon - Launching on Premier Access of Disney+ (like Mulan last year) is the newest film from Walt Disney Animation Studios featuring the impressive voice cast of Kelly Marie Tran, Awkwafina, Gemma Chan, Daniel Dae Kim, Sandra Oh, and Benedict Wong. If you need a primer, Kelly Marie Tran is Raya and Awkwafina is the last dragon. Rumor has it the film will be available to all Disney+ subscribers as early as June if you don’t want to spend the $30.
Coming 2 America - Akeem and Semmi return to America in this highly anticipated sequel to the 1988 film with an almost identical title, Coming to America. The original film is fantastic and I am hopeful that Eddie Murphy and team will be able to recapture what made that movie great for this sequel coming to Prime Video.
Boss Level - Joe Carnahan directs this sci-fi action film starring Frank Grillo, Mel Gibson, and Naomi Watts set to premiere on Hulu this month. Boss Level marks Carnahan’s first directorial effort since 2014′s The Stretch which ended up going straight to video.
Chaos Walking - Daisy Ridley and Tom Holland star in this adaptation of the acclaimed sci-fi trilogy Chaos Walking from director Doug Liman. Chaos Walking wrapped filming back in 2017 and it has been a long road for the film to finally make it to the screen, including a series of reshoots in 2019 after poor test screenings.
March 12th
Cherry - After coming out in theaters in February, the Tom Holland starring Cherry will be coming to Apple TV+ this month. Cherry marks the first film directed by Anthony and Joe Russo not starring Captain American since 2006′s You, Me and Dupree. Not to mention it looks great.
Yes Day - Jennifer Garner and Edgar Ramirez star as parents who let the kids make the rules for one day in this family film coming to Netflix. At only 86 minutes long, it may be the perfect movie between bath time and bedtime. But be wary, after viewing your kids might ask for a “Yes Day” and you will be forced to say “No.”
March 19th
Zack Snyder's Justice League (March 18th) - The so-called Snyder Cut is here. At a reported four hours long, director Zack Snyder leaves it all on film in his original version of the 2017 film. The fact that the Snyder Cut exists and is being released on HBO Max this month is still unbelievable to think about. The movie will either be a masterpiece or a disaster, but either way, I will be watching and I am sure you may be too.
The Courier - After premiering at the Sundance Film Festival in 2020 under the title Ironbank, the Cold War-set historical drama starring Benedict Cumberbatch is finally seeing a theatrical release.
March 26th
Nobody - Bob Odenkirk stars in this action-thriller from Hardcore Henry director Ilya Naishuller. Connie Nielsen, RZA, and Christopher Lloyd co-star. That’s all I got.
March 31st
Godzilla vs. Kong - Godzilla and King Kong are on a crash course for conflict in this upcoming epic coming to HBO Max. The crossover marks the fourth film in Legendary’s MonsterVerse after 2014′s Godzilla, 2017′s Kong: Skull Island, and 2019′s Godzilla: King of the Monsters. There are a handful of humans in the movies too, Kyle Chandler, Millie Bobby Brown, and Zhang Ziyi reprise their roles from King of the Monsters and new humans, Alexander Skarsgard, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, and Demian Bichir join the fun and carnage this time around.
Now for a quick look ahead to April, my top picks for next month are Mortal Kombat and Without Remorse.

off the rack #1187
Monday. November 6, 2017
I've reached the age where there is no avoiding life's less appealing realities, death and taxes. Reading provides a pleasant respite but I can't hide behind a comic book forever. Lucky for me I have a lot of other good things like family and friends to balance out the bad.
Charles Soule  and Mark Waid are the two writers dominating the comic books that I took to read last week. I'm still a big art fan but bad writing can still turn me off a book even if it's drawn by one of my favourite artists. Lucky for me it seems like my favourite artists only work with good writers.
Power Pack #63 - Devin Grayson (writer) Marika Cresta (art) Chris O'Halloran (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). I enjoyed the original series when it hit the racks in 1984 and thought it was cool that June Brigman modelled the kids' parents after Louise and Walt Simonson. Marika Cresta's art is really nice in this one shot and she doesn't change the look of the kids much as an older Katie recounts a fight with a super villain in a story she wrote for a school writing assignment. I liked this a lot and would recommend it for younger readers.
Superman #34 - Peter J. Tomasi & Patrick Gleason (writers) Ed Benes, Doug Mahnke & Jack Herbert (art) Dinei Ribeiro (colours) Rob Leigh (letters). Part 2 of "Imperius Lex" starts off with the wily Lex Luthor pulling the old switcheroo to weasel out of being proclaimed the new ruler of Apokalips. Then we catch up with how Lois and Jon are dealing with being stuck on this unforgiving planet. I really like how feisty mother and son are.
Archie #25 - Mark Waid (writer) Audrey Mok (art) Kelly Fitzpatrick (colours) Jack Morelli (letters). The end of this issue is a classic cliffhanger that will result in a lot of drama for Archie and the gang. I hear that Betty and Jughead are romantically involved in the TV show. Sacrilege, I say.
Captain America #695 - Mark Waid (writer) Chris Samnee (art) Matthew Wilson (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). I'm giving good old Cap another look see because it's being done by the team that made Daredevil a delight to read for quite a while. This issue recaps the origin and has Captain America fighting white supremacists. I like the message that everybody can be a hero so I'm putting this title back in the reading line up.
Batman #34 - Tom King (writer) Joelle Jones (art) Jordie Bellaire (colours) Clayton Cowles (letters). I love the Cat and the Bat fighting together. When Batman's ex shows up things get real. There's an emphasis on family in this story and people are being forced to behave in ways that they would not normally. That is what is making this fun for me.
Paper Girls #17 - Brian K. Vaughn (writer) Cliff Chiang (art) Matthew Wilson (colours) Jared K. Fletcher (letters). This series goes way out on a limb here by including time travelers from 70,000 AD. I'll be surprised if mankind makes it to 3000 AD what with the extreme weather changes and global political turmoil happening. I hope we get to the end of this story before the end of the world as we know it.
Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #6 - Chip Zdarsky (writer) Michael Walsh (art) Ian Herring (colours) VC's Travis Lanham (letters). I only read this issue for the super big secret reveal that I was told was in here and yes, I agree that it was a monumental moment in Spider-Man history. I liked how Chip captured the emotions of both Peter and Jonah as they argued about power and responsibility. This issue impressed me enough to put this title back in the reading line up.
Batman White Knight #2 - Sean Murphy (writer & artist) Matt Hollingsworth (colours) Todd Klein (letters). This Joker versus Batman story for mature readers is super cool. The appearance of the Harley Quinns took me by surprise. Harleen Quinzel is a lovely piece of eye candy.
Star Wars: Darth Vader #7 - Charles Soule (writer) Giuseppe Camuncoli (pencils) Daniele Orlandini (inks) David Curiel (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). This issue sets up a big conflict for Vader that involves an old Jedi and a mysterious secret. Hints like that will make me rush to the racks in 2 weeks to pick up the next issue.
Astonishing X-Men #5 - Charles Soule (writer) Ramon Rosanas (art) Nolan Woodard (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). The Shadow King is winning the battle to possess the souls of the X-Men but Charles has a plan. I'm curious to see if Professor X will come back from the dead after this.
Avengers #673 - Mark Waid (writer) Javier Pina with Paco Diaz (art) Rachelle Rosenberg (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). Worlds Collide part 3. It's the Avengers and the Champions versus the High Evolutionary and his Ani-Men. What's going to happen to Falcon and Viv Vision in the hands of the big bad guy is what's going to get me to read part 4 when Champions #14 hits the racks in 2 weeks.
Spider-Man #234 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) Oscar Bazaldua (art) Justin Ponsor (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). Sinister Six Reborn part 1. Anybody can be a super villain with the proper attire. I had to search way back in my memory banks and Google the guy to make sure, to ID the mysterious gent that gathers together the new Sinister Six. Miles is going to be busy soon and that's not even considering the drama that Bombshell junior might start bringing.
Batman: The Devastator #1 - Frank Tieri (plot) James Tynion (words) Tony S. Daniel (pencils) Danny Miki (inks) Tomeu Morey (colours) Tom Napolitano (letters). It's an obvious choice for a Batman Doomsday mash up if the objective is to kill Superman. It's what Doomsday Bat does next that makes this issue interesting. These Metal one shots are okay but they do not entice me to read any of the regular DC books that tie into the main story. I don't think I would even read these if I wasn't a Batman fan.

Bucky and Steve go from having an almost normal life after the war, until the bombs dropped and Steve was forcefully taken out of the Vault. Bucky's on his way to rescue him, even if it kills him. No one can hide from the Institute and it's best weapon: Steve Rogers.
