-Nowww Fyodor will most likely teach you the skills of conversation. Such as how to gather information, how to gain someone's trust quickly, how to manipulate someone even; needless to say, you wouldn't have social anxiety anymore 👍

-Nikolai would also love to teach you anything that you asked for. Such as how to fight an opponent, how to keep a conversation interesting, and even some magic tricks! He loves doing small magic shows for you, especially when you’re upset. He likes it when you laugh, because your laughter is so precious to him

-Please but if you’re upset, he would listen to you rant or cry and afterwards would say a few words of encouragement. Would also give you hugs, but these hugs last longer and have far more deeper meaning. Nikolai cares about you a lot and just wants to see you happy and free

-That one time somebody hurt you, he immediately took care of them. No questions asked. And let’s say that the way that he took care of them was not the prettiest to say the least...

As some of you may know, today, December 4th, marks the 10th anniversary of Bungou Stray Dogs.

All his friends looked up to him. He was invincible in their eyes, and he’s failed them. But most importantly, Ranpo has failed you. At least, that’s what he assumed.

Ranpo had never felt this defeated in his whole entire life. It was as though the world was caving in around him, and he had no sense of control. He needed to get away from all the chaos, away from the monsters on the street.

No one was at the agency at the moment, so Ranpo took it upon himself to camp out there. At least until he got his emotions under control. He made his way underneath his desk, pulling his knees up in front of himself as he buried his face in his hands. He was hyperventilating, his hands were shaking so much and he couldn’t drown out the thoughts rushing through his head.

He hated this. Feeling so weak, and helpless. He was the greatest detective, bad guys he damned! But right now, he didn’t feel so great. He was a complete failure, he didn’t want to see the look on your face when you found out he wasn’t able to stop all this madness from breaking loose.

You were his best friend, the person he confided in with practically everything. You were the only other person besides Fukuzawa that got to see this side of him. The vulnerable side, the Ranpo who wasn’t hiding behind his sheer confidence and skill. Countless times you would come to his rescue, bringing him some snacks and sitting with him in silence until he bounced back.

You had seen Ranpo take off towards the agency, you knew he was blaming himself and you didn’t like that one bit. It’s not his fault, no matter what anyone else says. You finally caught up to him, swinging the agency doors open before shouting out, “Ranpo? I know you’re in here, where are you?” you were frantic. You knew he was probably in a really bad headspace right now, and you just wanted to be there for him.

you began checking under every single desk. You knew he would often hide out under them as he tried to calm himself down. You approached his desk, slowly kneeling down, and that’s when you saw him. He was shaking, with his hands pulled up to cover his face. You could hear his small hiccups as he began to let the tears flow down his cheeks. The sight alone made your chest ache.

"No, don't cry. I hate it when you cry.”

You cautiously reached out to pull his hands away from his face. His beautiful emerald eyes were drowning in tears, and his nose began to run slightly. He hiccuped as his gaze met your concerned one, you began wiping away his tears with your thumbs. Pulling back slightly to ball up your sleeve, before wiping his runny nose clean. You always took care of him like this, and it meant a great deal to Ranpo.

“Ranpo, don’t blame yourself. It’s not your fault,” you stated softly, rubbing his face gently with your fingers now. Trying to soothe him the best you could. “Come here. Let’s get you out from under this desk, yeah?” You moved your hands down to clasp around his own. Pulling him, and yourself up by your interlocked fingers.

He immediately pulled you in for a hug. Clinging onto you for dear life as the sobs wracked through him once more. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry y/n! don’t hate me, please!” Your heart sank further at his words. You moved your hands up to his waist, pulling him into you further as you began to lightly scratch up the expanse of his back. “Shh… don’t you dare apologize Ranpo, you didn’t do anything wrong. I could never hate you Ranpo, in fact,

You whispered out that last part, as Ranpo's sobs halted. He stiffened up in your grasp before he pulled back slightly, to get a clear view of your face. You were flushed, feeling embarrassed for getting your feelings off your chest like that.

You and Ranpo had an unshakable bond. Everyone in the agency could see that, hell, even strangers on the street could see it. You two were unmatched, two hearts that beat as one. Why else would you do everything in your power to make him happy if you didn’t love him? He meant everything to you at this point, and that’s why hearing him talk so badly about himself as he sobbed into your shoulder broke your heart into pieces.

His tears were drying on his cheeks as a warm grin now complimented his features. He squeezed your shoulders tightly from where his hands rested before confessing,

“I think I love you too, y/n!”

-But let me explain. Mori assigned you to be Chuuya's subordinate, since he deduced that Chuuya would be the best mentor to train you up the quickest and most efficiently

-Chuuya doesn’t underestimate or belittle you. Which means that he doesn’t go easy on you, and he expects you to do your best and get the best results. He is strict, but he is fair and he knows your limits

-He is harsh sometimes, and his patience isn’t the best, but he will try to help you learn and grow. Chuuya is pretty loud, but he rarely shouts; only if he’s really mad at you, and for that to happen you must’ve messed up pretty bad or messed up deliberately

-However, Chuuya does appreciate the fact that you don’t purposely try to argue with him or make him mad. He’s had to deal with a lot of people that get on his nerves, and having a student like you that actually tries to be a peacekeeper is really refreshing for him. Because of this, he’s never really yelled at you, something which both of you are glad for <33

-You’ll mostly be learning martial arts and weapon handling from him. Now he won’t be like Dazai and straight up kick you around, but that doesn’t mean he won’t bruise you a fair bit. But don’t worry, he never gives you anything worse than a bruise and sore muscles

-He pushes you to take risks. He is the type that believes if you push past your limits, then you could actually learn and grow. However, that doesn’t mean he’ll always make you take risks. If he thinks you can’t handle your opponent, he’ll come and assist you

-Even with his short temper, I feel like he’d be good at explaining how things are supposed to be done. Just listen carefully, because the second time you ask him he might become impatient

-Also, he appreciates your empathy and your kindness. Most of the people he know are just mindless killing machines who never stop to think about emotions. Your ability to empathise and know how to deal with emotions secretly makes Chuuya a little soft inside, but he still instructs you not to let your emotions get in the way of the mission. He would hate to see you manipulated or killed because of your empathy

-Over time, Chuuya might come to trust you a little more. Whenever he’s drunk, he might be the only one to open up to you, but he won’t open up to you completely. But you could open up to him, and even if he acts like he wouldn’t care, deep down he’s secretly glad that you trust him.

-Now, despite his temper and his harsh words, Chuuya cares about you! If anybody hurt or used you, you bet that Chuuya would be on his way to deal with them. Deep down, he has a heart of gold, even if his personality seems like the opposite

-Chuuya will actually lend you some of his accessories or clothes for a mission. One time, he even told you to take care of his hat before he left to beat up some enemies. And let me tell you, him entrusting his hat in your care is one of the highest honours you could ever receive

-Feel free to ask him to help you with anything! Whether it be schoolwork, relationships, or just life in general, Adam is always willing to help and guide you. And he always does it in the most efficient way possible, even when some of these ways are kind of strange

-Adam loves giving you piggyback rides or hugs. His hugs are the best, and they always manage to cheer you up when you’re feeling down. And piggyback rides? Just say the word and Adam would leap all throughout Yokohama while carrying you securely on his back

-He probably would teach you how to defend yourself. However, due to his program, Adam always manages to predict which move you were going to throw, and each time he always predicts it right lol (you get back at him later by spraying water at him aHa)

-Coding? Since Adam himself runs on codes, he is naturally interested in this hobby, and most of the times he ends up teaching you something new. It helps immensely, because coding is so complicated (speaking from personal experience here ;-;) Adam could even teach you how to hack into the government’s database lol. He wouldn’t though because he has good morals most of the time <3

-If he sees anyone mistreating you, Adam is immediately by your side and giving the other person a lecture. If they still continue to mistreat you, well let’s just say that Adam has 1000 ways to take care of them, and each way works like magic

-Introduce him to new foods! Adam is open to trying out new opportunities, so when he learned that there was more than acorns and gum, he’s immediately going with you to the supermarket on a shopping trip. Also I headcanon that he’s great at cooking, so bring him along everytime you go shopping!

-Adam is great at reading emotions, and he always knows how to comfort you. He also gives the best advice, and his ability to empathise is probably higher than a lot of people in BSD lol

-Even if you weren’t feeling down, Adam would probably give you a lot of headpats. But he will ask if he can headpat you, and will stop if you asked him to (as we all know, we stan a consent king 👑)

-Oh, and if anybody dares to mistreat you or bully you or basically do anything bad to you, Pianoman would behead them. He’s quite protective of you, and he worries for your safety a lot, but he knows that you can take care of yourself

-Drawing, you say? Pianoman is interested. He’s quite the artist himself, and not to mention he’s elegant and precise, so he would definitely like drawing with you. Sometimes, you two have competitions to see who draws the better drawing

-Pianoman might be interested in books as well, so drop him some book recommendations! He’ll like reading them, but he loves reading your writing the most <3 and his feedback is quite encouraging as well

-The rest of the Flags treat you like a little sister as well. Albatross talks energetically with you, Chuuya would be your drink buddy, Iceman just chills around with you, Doc treats your injuries, and Lippmann provides all the juicy gossip from the Mafia and his acting career.

-^ One time, Lippmann was practicing some pickup lines on you (you agreed to it). Pianoman walked in and thought that Lippmann was genuinely trying to hook up with you. Legit was the most intense few minutes of your life (I’ll leave it to your imagination on how Pianoman reacted 🙂)

-Also, tell him all the random facts about the piano! I bet he’ll be really intrigued, since I headcanon he actually doesn’t know much about the piano. Just please don’t make him start dropping pianos on his victims or pulling out piano wires to use as his weapon... my heart will break if he does these 💔🎹

-Share some of your music with him! Pianoman probably listens to outdated songs or songs that nobody has ever heard of before, so he’ll be down for listening to the songs you listen to. His favourite song is probably Money by LaLisa

Dazai Osamu (BSD): a case study of a nihilist turned absurdist

I've talked a bit before about the themes of absurdism within BSD, and I think this plays heavily into Dazai and the personal journey he's gone on throughout the series (light novels included). From my perspective, his character development has followed a shift in ideology, from nihilism to absurdism.

First, I'd like to define how these two philosophies are similar yet different. Nihilism is the belief that life is intrinsically meaningless, and that there's no value to seeking meaning. Absurdism also believes that life has no intrinsic meaning, but states that revolting against the absurdity of existence is the way to create meaning.

While I don't think Dazai 100% fits either category fully at any given point in his life as we've seen it thus far, I think in his PM days he leans more towards a nihilist perspective, and following Oda's death he leans more towards an absurdist perspective.

Dazai's reasoning for joining the PM was because he thought that perhaps being around violence and raw emotions would help him understand humanity, giving him a reason to live. This doesn't sound quite like nihilism, but honestly, I think he gains a more nihilist point of view as time progresses and he realizes that he can't find meaning in the PM. I'm not even sure he believed that there was meaning to find in the first place, he was just desperate to prove himself wrong, and then failed, which really cemented this nihilistic mindset for him.

Friedrich Nietzsche, often regarded as the founding father of nihilism, claimed that nihilism "not only the belief that everything deserves to perish; but one actually puts one shoulder to the plough; one destroys.”

If life doesn't have meaning, then it doesn't matter to Dazai if he destroys. So, he fills a corpse with bullets, he horrifically abuses his subordinate, he actively tries to take his own life.

Nihilism is right in line with his suicidal nature. This isn't to say that all nihilists are inherently suicidal, but when one believes that life has no meaning, it's quite easy to come to the conclusion to kill oneself. I think this mindset really lends to his general depression and suicidal ideation, on top of the fact that he feels generally disconnected from humanity. It's so easy for him to consider himself inhuman because he has this nihilistic point of view that nothing matters and everyone else in society seems so dead set on opposing that worldview.

And then you have Oda. He is the closest thing Dazai gets to finding meaning within the PM. Like Chuuya, this is a person that fascinates Dazai, although his reason for fascination is much different. To Dazai, Oda represents what is good in the world, he thinks that he is a good man, and struggles to reconcile how a good person can come out of an existence so seemingly pointless and horrific.

Then, Oda dies.

It's an absurd occurrence, and to Dazai it only proves that life has no meaning. This is exemplified when Dazai speaks to Fyodor about God in Meursault: "[God] is known for is famous for his coincidences and absurdism, I've seen it countless times," and a flashback to Oda's death is shown. A good man died for seemingly no good reason, and to Dazai, this only proves life's meaningless, because to the universe it didn't matter who Oda was, he died, regardless.

(I quoted the dialogue from the BSD anime English dub because I feel it better suited my argument, but you can see that he's essentially saying the same thing).

This event should have only further cemented Dazai as a hardcore nihilist, but fortunately for him, Oda was able to get a word in before he passed. Exhaustion was weighting onto you like nothing else. Your eyes were hurting at this point from having to look at the same screen for weeks now, only taking breaks to go to the toilet or either drown yourself in energy drink or coffee.
