Sometimes, I'm like, "I should read the comics." And then I remember that Spike has a space ship piloted by alien bugs and I'm just fucking confused.

I was going through the comics again searching for something specific and then I got hung up on this moment in season 10. This moment really does mean a lot to me. Honestly, that entire arc was probably my favorite, even though vampire lore wise it was a bit confusing and weird.
But how insecure Spike felt about Angel returning, how Buffy caught on with that and reassured him that Angel is her past and that he is her present.
And the GROWTH that the comics allowed Angel here. His irritation and typical reaction at first, his realization that he is stagnating and not moving forward. And then, before he leaves, him having this moment with both Spike and Buffy individually.
Highlighting that her happiness is more important to him than her being his like some kind of possession. The kind of thing I always wished the show would have given us, especially considering that AtS had Angel move on from Buffy and fall for Cordelia. I always wanted to see the growth that just as he has moved on, he can accept that she also moved on, instead of having this childish competition with Spike like Buffy is some kind prize to be won.
File that under reason #53 why the BtVS comics seasons 9 to 10 are amazing and should be read.

Writing Update
So just a brief update on my writing. Making progress for my first fic for the buffyverse/spn crossover verse. First fic doesn't require working knowledge of the Buffy series too much as it is coming from Dean's POV who is acting as conduit to explain the Buffyverse to the SPN hunters. If you do know Buffy, you get to snicker as the knowledgeable audience as Dean struggles to figure out what happened to his brother and where he is now.
Current word count is a little under 80,000 words and 11+ chapters. I think I got about a fifth to still write based on what I have outlined. I also have the majority of the verse outlined and an outline for the next fic. I hope to start posting in January.
Here's a sneak peek.
Working Summary of the Series:
Working Title: Divine Intervention (PTB Style)
The Powers That Be see a looming threat on the horizon. One that has the possibility of heralding the end of all and turning the earth into another dark dimension. In order to nullify this threat, they decide to send three psychic children back in time to the Sunnydale Hellmouth as their champions to circumvent a key event in time that allowed this threat to gain power. In the process creating circumstances to give a set of special children a fighting chance in resisting a certain yellow-eyed demon and his apocalyptic plans.
Too bad they didn't think to ask their champions on whether they wanted to be involved or not. One in particular who had recently sacrificed his home and his ties to his family in the hopes for a safe and normal life at Stanford University will be especially upset on being abruptly pulled back into the supernatural world.
Working Title for Fic: Welcome to Waverly Hills
Working Summary:
After his brother vanishes without a trace from his Stanford dorm in October 2002, Dean struggles to find any information on what had happened to his missing brother. When his father gives up hope on finding Sammy alive, Dean reaches out to Bobby for assistance who in turn gets him into contact with Ellen, Joe, and Ash at the Roadhouse as well as other hunters in the community. Unfortunately, the trail grows cold and little progress is made over the next year.
Meanwhile, while working on a case in Cleveland, Joe finds herself pulled into a fantasy world controlled by the Trickster where she is thrown into various scenarios imagined by the monster for his own amusement. She struggles to make sense of what is going on while Ellen and Ash attempt to find a way into the Trickster’s playground to save Joe. Oftentimes, they find themselves helpless to watch the Trickster’s latest productions as he televises his latest creations at a local state theater. It isn’t until Joe runs into Dawn Summers in one of these productions, who has also been pulled into the playground, that the first solid connection is made into what happened to Sam in 2002. Dean races to Cleveland to find answers but the question remains: Is this all a ploy to get revenge on the Winchesters for attempting to kill the Trickster or will Dean finally find out what happened to Sammy? Is his brother still alive? And if he is, where has he been all this time?
AU to Season 1/Pre-Series. Some events from canon may occur but be modified based on the new timeline.

Romance and Regrets - A Willow/Lake and Past Willow/Lake story
Summary: At first, Willow had so wanted to believe in her new job and this romance with Lake. But as Lake showed her true colors more and more, she realized what a mistake that had been. About the Willow and Lake pairing/past Willow/Lake. Set in Buffy season 10 and 11. Introspective.
Willow's PoV
Willow had really cared for Lake at first. Even though there had been some anxiety on her part, deep down, about going to work for the U.S. government, Lake had quickly assuaged her fears with open arms.
And, if Willow was being honest… Lake had spoke well of things that Willow herself had felt a couple of times, but had been afraid to put into words: like what if Willow moreso loved her memories of Buffy and the others than who they were now (and vice versa).
The witch had thought that with beauty and grace, Lake had really seen who Willow was now. And, well, Willow was moved more than she had been since Kennedy. Maybe even before Kennedy.
…But it wasn't meant to last.
Like it so often happened, it seemed that Buffy's instincts were strong and true and when it came to choosing between the government and what Willow believed in (her fellow Wiccans and the super-powered of the world in general), of course Lake would side with the government.
When Willow learned that she was going as far as wanting to put the supernatural in internment camps and for them to eventually give up their magic if they wanted to get out of there (even if Willow could maybe understand the government’s desire to handle vampires and other nasties this way, if she was being fair), the witch thought she had never felt more nauseous. It was the Initiative all over again.
Yes, Lake eventually came through for Willow while she was in the camp, but only because of their former relationship. It was clear where her heart really lied, and she was all too smug about it all as far as Willow was concerned.
And Willow wasn't even surprised when the whole “taking the supernatural beings’ powers” thing turned out to be a ploy by one government official to steal everyone's powers for her own—once again: this was seriously the Initiative, and how this rung strongly of Adam—and Lake was too much a fool to have ever sensed any of this.
Once upon a time, Willow had looked at Lake, thinking she met new chances and maybe something more beyond that.
She never would have thought she'd end up being one of the relationships she regretted the most. But unfortunately, that was just how the cookie crumbled.
Author's Note: A story that I wrote a while ago and forgot about, but just recently found again on my laptop. I think I mainly wrote this because I’ve been writing a lot of Bangel lately, but I don’t want to get in the habit of only writing them. So, this was to again prove that I care about other things in the Buffyverse besides just them, of course.
To be honest, I actually kind of liked Willow/Lake at first… but then Lake became The Worst TM, and alas. (Though I actually did write a fic once—that was after Buffy season twelve—where I had her redeem herself some and her and Willow make another go at it [largely because it’s kind of hard to find good romantic candidates for Willow at all in the comics]. This is the 50K Buffy fic I wrote for NaNoWriMo one year that I’ve mentioned a few times, that’ll probably never see the light of day unless I do some serious editing on it. It was one of my first Buffyverse fics [especially of that caliber] and I didn’t have a great grasp on Buffyverse yet. But it helped me to get that grasp, so there is that. Anyway…)

btvs season 1 episode 10 "nightmares" is a story about abuse, and more specifically about a young boy who has been abused by an authority figure. in a very real sense, the titular nightmares stem from this act of abuse—they're of course doing some metaphorical work on the level of individual character (e.g. willow's opera dream represents her fear of being scrutinized and "found out"), but as they all come from billy, we can also understand them as a metaphor for the kind of unreasoning fear an abusive authority figure might inspire in a child under their care.
see buffy's behavior, for example. this episode identifies buffy with billy—she serves as a kind of proxy for him, running from the monster with him and ultimately helping him defeat it. it's the running that's interesting here. buffy describes the ugly man as "too strong" for her to fight, something we only rarely see her do, and usually in reference to enemies of a far greater caliber than this kind of villain‐of-the-week. in fact, buffy spends a big chunk of this episode in abject fear!
in the end, of course, she faces down the ugly man and saves the day. it takes her a good while, though, and by that time someone else has beaten her to the punch (🤡) and already faced his fears.
despite his connection with buffy in this episode, the fact that billy is a young boy who has been physically abused by someone who was supposed to look after him positions him as a much more direct parallel to xander, who at various points in the show is heavily implied to have been (and at this point in time presumably still is) a victim of abuse at his parents' hand. interesting, then, that it's specifically xander who turns around and decks his nightmare in the face!
it's played as a comedic beat, and there's not much in the way of on-screen justification for xander's sudden burst of courage, but given the context of the episode it feels significant that it's him. in fact, if the ugly man represents billy's baseball coach, then there's no reason why we can't understand the clown (textually an adult who terrorized xander when he was a child) as a stand-in for xander's parents.
what's more, towards the end of the episode, when billy is "unmasking" the ugly man, willow expresses confusion—but xander says, "i get it." out of all of them, he's the one who understands exactly what billy is going through. this similarity between them is further underscored by xander's line in the final scene, when buffy expresses disbelief at the coach's actions: "you obviously haven't played kiddy league. i'm surprised it wasn't one of the parents."
"i get it." and of course he would. he's been there himself.

if u did a tier maker of buffyverse ships i would enjoy it 🙏
This is tricky because ships are one of those things that people can get really passionate about, and I don't want to upset anyone. I try to steer clear of any drama when I can, but I also want to feel free to express my opinions, you know? Because god knows I have them.
I guess I'll say before I wade into any discourse that, disclaimer: my enjoyment of a ship doesn't mean I condone what goes on in it, and I can separate fiction from reality. I try not to moralize when it comes to fictional ships and approach them both objectively in terms of quality and also subjectively to my personal tastes. But I also believe that, at the end of the day, it's just fandom and people should do whatever floats their boat.
So with all that being said, here's my (highly personal!) rankings of the ships in Buffyverse:
C Tier:
Tumblr media
ATS 1x09 - This is the ship with the bomb that Doyle sacrifices himself to disarm. Now it's a good episode, but this is really the only wide shot we get of the boat. I literally forgot that the climax takes place on the water. The interior is fun with lots of stairs and various apparatuses for fight scenes, but it could just as easily have been a basement or abandoned factory. Honestly, I wasn't too impressed by the ship factor. Rating: 4/10
B Tier:
Tumblr media
BTVS 2x13 - You might be thinking, "You're ranking a BACKGROUND ship higher than an actual location?" but hear me out: because the ship is in the background, I actually remembered that this scene had a ship. There's a great fight scene in front of it where Buffy uses the chain along the docks to choke out a bad guy, and then she gets thrown into the water. The ship hangs out in the background the whole time and brings together the whole nautical-themed fight. Rating: Angel diving into the water/10
A Tier:
Tumblr media
BTVS 3x15 - Now we're cooking with gas. We get a FULL shot of the whole ship on the dock. The establishing shots linger on the boat more because Buffy and Faith have a confrontation here. Not only do they have a conversation with someone visibly ON a boat, Faith starts out on the upper deck of the boat then swings herself OFF the ramp to argue with Buffy on the docks. Bonuses for a visually dynamic conversation and the boat representing Faith's plans to fuck off, interrupted by HER choice to get off and get in Buffy's face about it instead. Rating: Saving the girl that's supposed to be your enemy/10
S Tier:
Tumblr media
ATS 3x22 - I know, we're getting into controversial territory here. But look how beautiful this ship is. Is it a boat? A schooner? A yacht? I don't know, but I DO care. Extra points for it being a plot-necessary boat, of course, since they had to get Angel out into the middle of the sea somehow. What's great about this ship is that it's really condensed all the ship elements into a smaller vessel, so you're aware throughout the tense emotional scenes that you're actually ON a boat in the middle of the sea. It really emphasizes Angel and Connor's isolation at this point in the finale, both physically and emotionally. And, I mean, look at this: we actually have a shot that has most of a boat AND most of a person in it. AND it's the climax of a season finale? THIS is the ultimate Buffyverse ship. Final rating: The misunderstanding-to-patricide pipeline/10

Top 10 Spuffy fics I’ve read (March 2024)
A Different Kind of (Sunny)hell by OffYourBird [Adult Only]
Between juggling a New World Order, a bothersome Council, wayward magic, and – as always – some much with the confusing time travel, there is never a dull moment in Sunnydale for Liz and Elly. This is Season 6 as it exists in the Jumpverse (beginning with A Different Kind of Hell and followed up by A Different Kind of Wedding). Fair warning: if you have not read the previous installments of the Jumpverse, this will not make any sense.
A Totally Random Occurrence by Herself [NC-17]
The stake slipped from her fingers, and she had to take a deep breath to stave off the dizziness descending on her like a hood over her head. "You—I thought you were dead." A reunion in New York City. Set post-NFA, spoilers for all of BtVS and AtS.
Cavalry by Holly [NC-17]
Buffy and Spike are enjoying life on the open road, but when they learn monsters have taken over Sunnydale, they have no choice but to head back to the Hellmouth.
Dusk Rising by HappyWhenItRains [NC-17]
"It doesn't matter. If Dawn dies, I'm done with it, I'm quitting." What if quitting wasn't all Buffy promised? -Challenge by Loup Noir Glory is defeated. The portal is closed. Except this time, the Scoobies decided to take matters into their own hands. While Willow restrains Buffy, Xander pushes Dawn off the tower. The rest is darkness. In the absence of Dawn, Buffy becomes Dusk.
The Footprints Left Behind by Willow91 [NC-17]
In the wake of an unknown attack on the American Frontier and the subsequent loss of contact with the friends they still had stateside, Buffy and Xander sneak into the country and begin a long, dangerous journey to find old friends and the source of the near apocalypse before it spreads throughout the rest of the world.
For You To Be You by lafillesauvage [Adult Only]
Alternate ending for 7x13 The Killer in Me. What happened after Buffy and Spike returned to an empty Revello Drive following the chipectomy? Well, in this story, Buffy realises just how much she cares for Spike, which leads to some fluffy reconciliations involving chocolate ice cream and Walker, Texas Ranger. She also gets her period, and adult-only fun is had by all.
Golden Hour by kennedynoelle [R]
Response to a challenge set by emilise: Spike never came to Sunnydale during the first few seasons. The first time Buffy sees him is during The Harsh Light of Day, sunbathing on campus adorned with the Gem of Amara. Oh no, she thinks, the pit of her stomach dropping and sending tinglies all over, he's hot. They start dating, Buffy unaware that her new boyfriend is a member of the undead. Of course, she has to find out eventually…
Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger by fortes775 [NC-17]
Buffy has spent the summer grasping for something just out of reach, but when Dracula arrives at the peak of her frustration, all bets are off. In which Buffy finds her fix, her man, and herself, not necessarily in that order…
Manifest by EllieRose101 [R]
The hardest demons you have to fight are your very own, but a little help can go a long way—if it’s the right kind. (Set after Tabula Rasa but before Smashed.)
Mixed Signals by phoenixjustice [NC-17]
Two people who were never supposed to meet. She had seen everything, up to the Dragon that destroyed everything she loved. He had only the lasting memory of her words of love before he burned to cinders. Could they bridge the gap between them?

Amends aired for BTVS season 3, episode 10. This was the only Christmas episode in the Buffyverse.
This was also the last appearance of Jenny Calendar. She was a computer science teacher at Sunnydale High, a technopagan, and dated Giles. Jenny is played by Robia LaMorte (now Robia Scott) and is in 14 episodes total, in S1, S2, and this episode in S3.

season 2 episode 10: what’s my line, part 2
* “she died?” “just a little”
* spike and angel have explored each others bodies btw
* drusilla my beloved
* they mention a slayer handbook and kendra says her studies were required, but then in season 7 none of the other potentials are prepared whatsoever for some reason?
* I love that oz’s hair always changes color. willows like “your hair is brown” and he’s just like “yeah sometimes”
* kendra says she was sent to her watcher as a kid but they didn’t know she was going to be chosen for sure, they just knew she was a potential. imagine if she never got called and had to live her life in the shadow of what she could have been. I guess she might not see it as a negative, the way she talks about slaying, it would just break me.
* “say uncle… oh that’s right! you killed my uncle!”
* the way gile’s described it, the order of taraka is supposed to be like an endless amount of bounty hunters that just keep coming until buffys dead, but there are only three? does spike being left for dead make the order for the kill invalid somehow? it doesn’t really make sense to me.
* I love early willow/oz moments they’re so cute
* drusilla is so hot she’s the big bad we deserved
