Hey guys! In honor of us reaching 400 subscribers, I feel the need to do a masterpost and share some advice I’ve learned here in the Studyblr community. Many people use bullet journals to keep them on task and help them plan out all of the important things in their lives.
There can be a large difference between a bullet journal and a planner depending on who you ask, as the choice is an extremely personal one. I personally use it as solely a bullet journal, without the structure and rigidity of a preset planner. Others prefer to use them like half-planners or scrapbooks filled with memories, so they can look back on how far they’ve come! So, let’s get to what constitutes a bullet journal.
You will need:
A pen
A journal/notebook/diary/a bookish thing you write in
Those are the only things you truly need to get started with a bullet journal. All of the pictures in the Studyblr community can serve as motivation for you, but only the necessities are actually required. However, if you want to take a look at some of the popular stationery used in the community, here’s a list:
Highlighters
Zebra Mildliners
Stabilo Boss Highlighters
Uni Propus Window
Muji Highlighters
Pens
Pilot G-2 07
Staedtler Triplus Fineliners
Muji Gel Pen 0.38mm
Uniball Signo 207
Zebra Sarasa
Pilot Juice
Journals
Journals
Leuchtterm 1917
Moleskine
Those are only a few of the popular items that can found floating in the community, but they add a certain type of flair to your journal in whichever way you use them. Now, I’ll tell you some of the most common startup pages, so that you can familiarize yourself and see which one of these you want to try out.
Setup Pages
Table of Contents; not absolutely mandatory, but highly recommended so you don’t lose your pages and can easily search for things
Monthly Spread/Year at a Glance; this is up to the individual person, as peoples’ schedules vary immensely, but you can choose how you want to see your schedule, whether it be in weeks, months, the entire year, or even days
Key; if you’re going to be using certain colors to correspond with certain events or things, you may want to create a key so that you can remember which color was which
Trackers/Ideas/Etc.; this is your journal, so make it how you want! At the end, I’ll include a list of bullet journal ideas
So, these are some of the things you can do to get your bullet journal started! Now, I want you to enjoy a list of ideas and resources that will help you along the way. :) Good luck!

How does one start a bullet journal? I want to correct one starting new semester maybe and. I want to find out how you can start with one. And what would you recommend in terms of supplies for making one?
Hi! Thank you so much for your ask! Alright so I myself haven’t done a masterpost on bullet journals, but this is a great one that is super helpful!
Personally, I started mine with a two-year-old, used too many times notebook that was completely falling apart from this Aussie brand store (which is super expensive so don’t even think about it because the quality isn’t so great either) called Kikki K.
The thing I think that’s important to understand about Bullet Journalling, and I’m no expert either, is that it’s completely personal and adaptable to you. You are in charge of what goes in, what pages you put in, how you style it etc etc. It doesn’t have to be like all the ones you see on tumblr - I for one have never reached that standard! But honestly practice makes perfect and soon enough you’ll find out what you like and then your journal will just be awesome!
Ok. Here are some tips.
TIME MANAGEMENT
creating a bullet journal is awesome for organising your life in a way that is suitable, accessible and sensible to you, however, the upkeep of the journal itself can eat up your time. Make sure you aren’t so busy organising your life that you forget to live it! I do it on the weekend, when I have more time to study, socialise, and then the journal becomes more of a leisurely craft in terms of styling a spread.
Also: don’t think you have to keep up with it every single week. If one week is absolutely hectic and you know that you’ll be stressed about the journal spread for that week, forget it if you have to. There are other ways you can organise your life just as effectively.
HOW TO START
in the beginning of the bullet journal, you’ll typically have something called a Future Log, which plans out the next year/semester. In this you’ll want to map out the upcoming months and the events happening, and this is something you can refer back to when you come to a new monthly spread.
You’ll also need a key/legend page if you’re big on symbols, for example if an event is a square, and a reminder is a circle. I won’t go into too much detail, check out the masterpost to find out more!
Index page, for all the important pages and their numbers. Remember that all of these are optional yet extremely helpful to start.
SPREADS
monthly spread:a monthly spread is like an expanded future log for the month. You can put in a calendar and write in important events, write down some goals, tv shows you want to watch, etc. You can have a specific theme for the month, for example Harry Potter, or a different colour for each month, so for me june was blue.
my monthly spread
weekly spread:this is the one you see probably all the time around tumblr. This maps out the week ahead, and you can put in a habit tracker, to do list, and then list the days and what is happening on those days. You can decorate these as much or as little as you like, don’t feel that it needs to look like the ones scattered around tumblr. As long as it makes sense to you, its working.

SUPPLIES
I’m going to preface this with a good ol’ you don’t need expensive pens to have a good bullet journal. Technically, all that you will ever need is a pen, ruler, and maybe a highlighter. But we can all safely say we want more than that, and that’s ok!
I use Zebra Mildliners, and either Tombow brush pens or Faber Castell brush pens. These are good for adding a little colour and separating information, as well as decorating etc.
You don’t need this expensive stuff! Check this out to find more supplies! Off eBay the zebra highlighters cost me about 45 Australian dollars, however someone I know who lives in Singapore got them about two dollars each. There are a total of fifteen highlighters, so do the math and make sure you don’t pay too much.
Hit up your local arts and crafts supplies store and find everything you need, or if you’re in Australia, you can hop on down to everyone’s holy temple, Officeworks! Find a wholesale stationary store and you’ll find cheap washi tape, pens and notebooks if you look hard enough.
I hope this helped and I hope to do a masterpost on bullet journalling soon! Happy journaling! xx

1. take notes every time you’re in lecture, and on applicable readings. so many people say that they’re bad at taking notes...when they NEVER take notes. taking notes is like any skill; the only way you get better is with time and practice. once you take notes consistently, you will develop a style of notetaking that works for you.
2. rewriting your notes is valid. i see a lot of studyblrs and studygrams talk about how they never rewrite notes and that rewritten notes are a waste of time. i don’t agree. i think rewriting your notes can be an effective study method, provided you do it as soon as possible after the material is covered in class. not only does rewriting your notes make them neater, which can be nice if you have hard to read handwriting, but rewriting your notes lets you actively review material to solidify gaps in your understanding, rather than passively reading over the notes. of course, don’t do it just for the aesthetic, but i rewrite most of my notes and i’m okay with it.
3. handwriting your notes > typing your notes, in most cases. some people genuinely need to type notes and that is okay too. but most studies show that typing notes in lecture means they’re less effective at helping you remember the information covered. this is because when you type your notes, you’re more likely to copy down the information verbatim because most people type faster than they can write. when you handwrite your notes, you have to pick and choose what to write down because you can’t go quite as fast, and you are more likely to convey the information in your own words. if you like the convenience of digital notes but want to handwrite for better retention, consider taking your notes on a tablet with a program like goodnotes, which lets you handwrite with a stylus. but good old fashioned pen and paper works just as well if not better! i’m a pen and paper stan myself.
4. functionality is more important than aesthetic. you don’t need to own any specific type of stationery to take good notes. maybe you don’t live near a muji store, maybe you like ballpoint pens better than gel pens, or maybe you just can’t be bothered to buy “aesthetic” stationery when what you can find at dollar tree works fine. that’s okay! purchasing specific stationery items won’t necessarily get you better grades. it’s really all about how you’re taking the notes. similarly, you really shouldn’t feel the need to worry about drawing elaborate diagrams, putting calligraphy titles on every lecture, or having the best handwriting when you take your notes. if these things help you learn or motivate you to study, that’s great, but you shouldn’t feel pressured to have “fancy” notes if it doesn’t suit your learning style.
5. for humanities classes, focus on concepts. for stem classes focus on examples. you kind of have to shift gears when you’re taking notes for different types of classes. in stem classes, understanding how to apply the concept is paradoxically much more important than having a super great understanding of the definition of the concept. so if your lecturer is working through a really long example, that’s not an excuse to zone out because you’ve already written down what the definition of the concept is. memorizing the pythagorean theorem is useless if you have no idea how to apply it. for your humanities classes, define as many key terms in your notes as you can if you don’t know what to take notes on. i’m grossly oversimplifying here, but you can kind of think of these classes as vocabulary courses where you’re looking to really understand what the words mean. you can later go back in and add examples.
6. for faster notetaking, use a highlighter, a quick drying pen, and correction tape. fancy gel pens might feel nice, but when you are taking notes in a fast paced lecture, waiting for them to dry so your notes don’t smudge can be a real hassle. i would honestly recommend using a ballpoint, felt tip pen, or quick-drying gel pen as an alternative, even though these maybe aren’t as “aesthetic.” if you make a mistake, go for correction tape over correction fluid, because you don’t have to wait for it to dry and you can write immediately on top of it. if you like to add color to titles or key words, use a highlighter instead of a colored pen, as this is a lot faster than switching between pens.
7. don’t make your color-coding too complicated. i don’t use a strict color code for my notes because it’s not really practical for me, but i do like to add color to their notes, especially when it comes to memorizing specific types of information. if this is a tactic you’re considering trying out, i would recommend that you keep it very simple. try to limit it to three colors max. too much more than that and you’re liable to mess it up and get confused. you want the colors in your notes to simplify them, not make the information more difficult to digest.
8. focus on what the lecturer is saying, not what’s written on the slides or handouts. you’re not going to lecture to read powerpoint slides; you’re going to learn what the lecturer has to say, so if the lecture is going really fast, focus on the things that they’re saying rather than the presentation. this may feel counterintuitive, but most lecturers provide slides/other supplementary materials prior to lecture or after the lecture, and if they don’t, you can always send an email and ask. if you find yourself mindlessly writing down the info from the presentation or handouts and then zoning out, consider printing out the slides prior to class and annotating them with the lecturer’s comments. if they’re good at lecturing, most of the information probably won’t be on the slides anyway. remember, a lecture is a one time thing. you can always get the slides later obviously, this has changed a little in the time of rona because a lot of lectures are recorded for you to watch later, but i still think this is relevant because i don’t think anyone wants to go back and rewatch a zoom lecture because they weren’t paying attention!
9. organize your notes in a way that makes sense to you. you want your notes in a central location when it comes time for that final! maybe you want to have separate notebooks for every class, or maybe one binder or notebook with multiple sections. maybe you want to date your notes or title them so you can remember specifically at a glance what is covered in each section. maybe you want to mark up your notes with page flags so you can easily flip to the most important sections. how you organize your notes is up to you, but it’s important to have some kind of system so you can study them with ease.
10. for notes on readings, summarize, summarize, summarize! if you have readings you want to take notes on, it’s not necessary that you copy down every single fact or key term. this will take forever, and more often than not, you will burn yourself out. instead, try to summarize what you’re reading in your head. try to write every paragraph as one or two sentences. this will force you to put the reading into your own words-active learning again-rather than painstakingly writing down extraneous information.

Hello! I've oredered a bullet jornel but idk how to make it so pretty
hi anon! well firstly i just wanna remind u that ‘pretty’ is 100% subjective when it comes to these things, and i have to say that i especially notice it in regards to bullet journaling - i always feel like everyone’s spreads look miles better than mine, but people seem to like my bujo posts just fine :) so what i’m trying to say is, don’t focus on how pretty your journal is, focus on the process - do what feels good, let your creativity run wild, try new things etc. i assure you you’ll start liking your spreads more and more as you go and get a hang of it :)
here’s just a couple tips you might find helpful:
discover what medium you like best - what type of pens? gel/ballpoint? maybe markers or crayons? do you enjoy adding printed photos or stickers? it’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the options you see on studyblr, but remember that you don’t need fancy stationery to make ‘pretty’ spreads :) i usually just go for a black gel pen, a pastel marker for my accent color, sometimes i add some washi tape, but that’s it - i prefer a pretty minimalistic look to my spreads
draw inspiration from others’ bujos - ofc this doesn’t mean copy them completely (unless they say it’s alright if you do, most will if you ask them beforehand!), but you can find layout ideas and handwriting styles etc. by going through the #bujo or #bullet journal tag here on tumblr, you can also go on youtube (amanda rach lee is my fave bujo youtuber, her videos are lovely if you’re just starting out, as she does explain her process well) or instagram (again, amanda posts lots of doodle tutorials that you might like there). you can also see all bullet journal posts i’ve reblogged by searching ‘bujo’ on my blog.
when you first start out, i think the most important thing is to play around with different spreads and layouts so you can find what works best for you. do you prefer vertical or horizontal weekly layouts? do you enjoy making playlist spreads? maybe quote pages or memory collages? remember that your bujo can be anything you want! a practical life planner with a hint of art, an artistic outlet with zero functionality, do what you want and what you want only. don’t think you have to make a certain spread just bc loads of other people are making them in their own journals. i, for instance, have come to realise i have absolutely zero use for a year at a glance spread. it does look lovely, though :)
most importantly: try not to hold yourself to a too high standard. i know. it’s not easy, but toning down on perfectionism will free you and allow you to focus on journaling for the fun of it, l'art pour l'art and all that :) additionally, you can use a pencil to sketch your spread before going in with a pen, just so you can easily fix any spacing mistakes you might make
Lastly, you might also find this post by @journalsanctuary helpful
and here’s a list of some studyblrs who post their bujo spreads frequently if you want to check their work out (i find their bujos inspirational myself, so): @jeonchemstudy @study-van @museeofmoon @starrystvdy *these clearly aren’t all of my faves, just a couple i can name off the top of my head atm* + @merostudies who hasn’t posted in a while, but their spreads are drop dead gorgeous and @saltwaterstudies who doesn’t post as frequently, but i love his spreads all the same :)
@ everyone: if you also post your bujo frequently, feel free to reply to this so others can discover your blog through the notes xx

things to do on sundays to recharge and make the upcoming week awesome
• clean ya room (just do it). also, check those pinterest boards you save for “one day” and actually go through them and draw some inspiration, even if you just end up rearranging the books on your bookshelf or putting some flowers from your garden in a mason jar on your desk. this is your home, make it feel like it is.
• do your laundry (also, don’t forget your bed sheets). if you’re in the mood, look at next week’s weather forecast and think about what you’re going to wear. go through your drawers, check the back of your closet. that hat you bought some time ago and forgot about because you didn’t dare to wear it? well... new week, new you, right?
• call a friend/family member you haven’t talked to in a while, tell them you miss them. tell them you love them. remember and appreciate that they are a part of your life even if it doesn’t feel like it all the time.
• draw, paint, journal, write or make some music. something you know you love doing but “never find the time”. sunday is “finding-the-time day”. if you’re not feeling creative, read a book or watch your favorite show. or watch a new show. a scary show. a funny show. laugh as loud as you want. listen to music. listen to your favorite songs, or listen to new songs. even a new genre if you dare. turn the volume all the way up. take a second to consciously feel the music. you can always get up and dance. or sing. or both.
• the great, but still really effective classic: take a bath or a really long shower. if you have this special face or hair mask you’re saving up for a special occasion: congrats, you’re the special occasion today. use it. also, body lotion. we all know you’re going to be running late during the week and skip it one too many times. make yourself feel like the goddess you are.
• sit in silence for a few moments. listen to your breath. listen to your heartbeat. for the love of god PLEASE listen to your thoughts for once in your life. don’t make them feel like they are wrong. or bothersome. they too just want to be heard once in a while. what are they trying to tell you? what could be soothing for them? be compassionate to yourself. it’s okay. you are okay. you are okay.
• think about things you can be grateful for next week. even if you feel like your life sucks atm, think about the small things you take for granted in a different way. for example: “next week, i will have access to clean water. CLEAN. WATER. 844 million people don’t have that.” or “next week, my legs will take me wherever i want to go. not everybody has two fully functioning legs, so i’m lucky in that way.” you're allowed to feel bad about your life, but you’re also allowed to feel good about things.
• if you’ve stayed home most of the week, go out. go for a walk. go swimming. go to a party or dinner with friends. even if you feel like you don’t need to see the outside world, chances are you’ll feel great after you do. if you feel like you’ve been running around all week, maybe you’d like to stay home today. put on your ugliest sweater, comfiest leggings, and fluffiest socks and curl up under a thousand blankets. you a sloth today and it’s okay.
• eat. i mean honestly: eat THE THING. i don’t care if you’re on a diet. if there’s something you’ve been craving all week that has turned you into the veiny-neck-dude meme just trying to resist it: EAT IT. you deserve it. not because you worked out or ate salads or did well in school, but just because you’re a human and you love to eat and life is short and you should be allowed to eat yummy things. it’s okay. you won’t gain 5 pounds or lose your brain cells no matter how unhealthy it is, i promise.
• plan plan plan yo week. it doesn’t matter if you use a planner, bullet journal, the calendar on your phone or the notes app: write everything down you have going on next week. appointments. events. coffee-dates. when are you going to the gym? what are you going to eat? (meal prep if necessary) also, create reminders on your phone for everything. “i won’t forget it!” is a sweet thought, but oh honey you will. schedule reminders for every event. let your phone remind you that you need to buy toilet paper when the store is nearby. schedule daily reminders for your medications. (once you’ve done this it honestly feels like you just cleaned out 38GB of your brain, you simply don’t have to worry about that anymore, space for more important info, like your new favorite pun to annoy everyone with)
• most importantly: listen to what your mind and your body need today and next week. daily life is so full of “should-do”s that it’s important to find a healthy balance between the “should”s and the “need”s. you will be much more productive, healthy and happy that way. nobody knows you better than you do, take advantage of that and plan accordingly.
