- Astro feels like he needs to be charismatic like dandy on stage which is why he seems out of character. hes forcing it, he hates the stage and hes not built to be an entertainer </3 Hes the same off of the stage though. my guy is napping between performances (they have a little rest area behind the curtain of their stage since theyre in there so much)

- astro is also still an avid reader!! Best place to look for him when hes not looking is curled up on a couch in the library. he likes it there because its quiet and he usually isnt bothered :] the only downside is sometimes rodger pesters him with questions

- dandy still absolutely adores pebble, he steals puppy away from shrimpo to play or cuddle with him (this pisses shrimpo off so bad. it makes him anxious actually because he doesnt know where his lil buddy is </3)

- While there arent any "mains" in tower of souls, they are a bit of a friend group!! they were super close back in the day but over time as things changed their relationships developed a bit of tension,, everyone pities shelly after the jone incident and after vee started getting super popular dandy started to get really jealous of her. pebble is also there because of the previous point lol.

- ^ relating to this, im not sure if the holiday toons would be included? Maybe theyd be more familiar with the "mains" friend group because theyre each the lead of their music group but the holiday toons dont usually spend much time in the main building so i dont think theyd be very close.

- Astro is good friends with razzle and dazzle :] he doesnt have all that many friends besides dandy, especially not close ones, but i think hed be closest with those two. Probably helps them script/record little films in their free time hehehe

- dandy also doesnt have that many friends, but not because hes antisocial like astro, its more that he has to keep his relationships pretty shallow just because of his job. yk. Its like you wouldnt usually be best friends with your boss because youd view them differently. hes friendly with everyone and i would say most of the toons consider him a friend but he cant have very close relationships because he needs to maintain that distance,, As previously mentioned though he is close with the mains :] i think astro is the only one who really knows all of the deepest parts of him but hes been a bit more vulnerable around their friend group. mostly in their earlier days though since again theres a bit of strain on all of their relationships

- Both of them have a much closer connection to the founders than most toons. Probably a given but theyre really the only ones who talk to arthur and delilah consistently :P the founders dont interact with the toons all too much, theyre busy doing other things and thats the toon handlers jobs, but since they primarily took care of the mascots when they were first created (being the experiments i mean they were the FIRST ones to be made they watched those two like hawks at first) they have some weird fucked up distant parent/guardian/ boss relationship. They go to the founders office pretty often just to talk about how things have been going lately, any improvements to either the business or the toons' quality of life, any incidents with toons or guests, etc :]

- Theyre both heavily reliant on each other. maaybe to a slightly unhealthy degree. ok fuck this requires seperate paragraphs

Astro is attached to dandy for multiple reasons. i mean just to begin with all of the toons form a LOOOT of trust and reliance with each other when theyre first born because theyre placed with a Fellow Toon whos also trying to figure out how to live and shit and they come to understand each other a lot.

Dandy is arguably even more attached to astro. like. as previously mentioned he cant form many close connections to other toons just out of necessity for his job. He takes on all of the social aspects of their roles while astro is more there to come up with ideas and think things through thourughly because dandy can be impulsive and impatient, theyre a very good team together but dandys confidence relies a lot on just. Having astro present. he likes just at least having him in the room, nearby, even if he doesnt help out in any way. thats exactly why he manipulated astro into helping him with all of the ichor-ification stuff, it wasnt that he couldnt do it alone, he just didnt know if he could mentally get himself to do it without the presence of his buddy. he genuinely believed that he was doing the right thing so he thought it was a worthy sacrifice to make astro feel awful as long as he could carry out his plan because Surely their life would be perfect after it all and itd all be worth it!!! (and then he killed everyone)

So yeah Jude graduated from USC at the age of 23 and he was recruited for olympic court when he was 25. He considers the Trojan's his family and still keeps in touch with all the upper classmen who he used to play with. He's very much taken the Trojan attitude into his professional career. He's known as a team player on the court and also a huge activist off the court. He's now involved in presenting the Day Spirit Award every year and he's incredibly proud to have been apart of the team consistently winning it. While Ilya falls into the Just Some Guy category, Jude really takes it up like 10 levels into Golden Child territory. He's the favored one for press duty and is most involved with his teams social media. He's usually the one to sit down for the little games or the ask me anything's or the interviews everyone else deems pointless.

Jude was diagnosed with depression when he was 19 after he came to Rhemann confessing that he had been self harming for a few months after the workload with his class got more difficult for him to manage and he started thinking about committing suicide. He was diagnosed with adhd a few years later when he was 22 and now he now manages both with a mixture of therapy and medication. He's not perfect and obviously that didn't get rid of his depression but he has always had a safe space to talk about it and to get the help he needs. He advocates a lot for mental health in general but especially where athletes where it tends to get ignored with all the pressure put on them and he brings that into all of his relationships with his teammates trying to create a safe space for them. He is a huge factor in actually getting Em, Mara, and Florian to see therapists and he's who Florian calls after his 5th attempt and takes him to the hospital.

I need y'all to know that Jude popped into my head literally today. He was named like 3 hours ago. So this is all just kind of developing as I yap about him. He's big on team inclusion. Doesn't want anyone to feel left out. At first Ilya really butted heads with Mara and Florian cause they were Raven's and Jude was basically the one to get sick of that and tell them they needed to shut the fuck up and put on their get along t-shirt

He's generally pretty outgoing and he loves a good party. And by party he means hosting his team and having some food and drinks and visiting with every one. Though he does go a little crazy after a win and he will probably not get home till like 6 in the morning and then will sleep for a full 24 hours

He comes off as very loud and flirtatious to most people, most people will think he is flirting even when he isn't and he has accidentally agreed to multiple dates before realizing they were dates and having to awkwardly let people down. He doesn't really date much, not seriously, largely because of how involved he is with the media portion of his job. If he does end up dating (and I don't have anyone set up for him yet) it'd most likely be another exy player who is also super involved with the media and interacting with the press

6. What character do you have the most fun writing?

answered this here but bonus answer jason is very for me also by virtue of being my favorite guy in general. knowing him so well means that i have a very good grasp on how he fits into a scenario and i can pick and choose pretty effortlessly which version i want to use to have the most fun with him. he can truly do it all.

8. Is what you like to write the same as what you like to read?

i'd say in general that my tastes in reading are broader than what i write. off the top of my head, here's a list of things that i like reading but don't ever see myself writing: crossovers (star wars, criminal minds, white collar), no cape aus, a laundry list of romance tropes, fluff just like in general... it goes on.

a large chunk of my fics i write because i want to read it and nothing/not enough of it exists, so that absolutely falls into stuff i like to read. however, i do write a lot of hurt no comfort/angst with no happy resolution, and i am a little... wobbly on how much i enjoy reading that. i need to be in the right mindset getting into it if i'm reading, but writing that has always been very fun. sometimes i don't even realize how angsty i'm making something until i take a step back, lol.

20. Tell us the meta about your writing that you really want to ramble to people about (symbolism you’ve included, character or relationship development that you love, hidden references, callbacks or clues for future scenes?)

okay okay it's this question's fault that i've been sitting on this ask for 2 billion years. let's go through this.

compound fracture - i think one of my favorite things about this fic is that if you ignore the victim blaming, which is a lot to ignore, i know, the batfam do care deeply about jason. they're just kind of terrible at communicating it (by spying on him and trying to shield him from potential triggers without actually knowing the details of his death). and that results in jason simply not registering that he is trusted and considered a part of that family like, at all.

i also really like when i reference dick using a crowbar as an impromptu weapon during a fight + the later reveal that bruce probably didn't know a crowbar was involved in jason's death at all.

+ offhand mention to the joker un plotline because jason knowing about bruce's half-assed attempt on the joker's life would not!! change!! anything!!!

anyway the don't-put-jason-in-a-warehouse directive extends to casts and splints, which is why we're at the docks, and that's a fun bit of consistent continuity that appeals to me exclusively.

casts and splints is particularly interesting to me, because yes while the focus of the fic was supposed to be on dick realizing 'hey wait the victim blaming's kind of fucked up' it sort of changed to be about a lot more than that? in a way that infected the summary too. like the fic is centered around that 'you can't save everyone' idea, when easily preventable accidents happen and the sort of guilt that follows. no one talks about dick's interaction with this unnamed henchman but it's probably one of my favorite parts of the fic:

"Thank you," Dick repeated, gentle and confident as he turned his back to the uninjured stranger with a gun strapped to his leg. "You've been very helpful." The man did not shoot, for the same reason Dick didn't bother tying him up for the GCPD.

i'm not entirely sure where i want to go with ossification (the series for these two). the initial plan (the reason the series is marked incomplete) was for a jaybin prequel, but currently i feel like that's a bit too repetitive, honestly. "dislocation" (a little steph & jason oneshot that takes place between the other two fics) i might finish and post one day, but it runs into the same issue.

if i ever do a real follow-up where dick tries to untangle... all of that victim blaming, i do think it's very important that i maintain a little throughline from casts and splints: the batfam don't know the specifics of what happened. they don't know that the victim blaming narrative (that jason recklessly went after the joker alone) is incorrect.

because it all goes back to this paragraph from back in compound fracture:

Jason had tried to help his mother instead of trying to take down a mass murderer alone, but it shouldn't matter. They shouldn't be blaming him—or the fifteen year old kid he had been—for getting murdered. The Joker murdered me, he had been thinking, on repeat, for the past day. It wasn't Jason's fault at all. It would never be Jason's fault, no matter what.

like i get why we talk all the time about why the presented victim blaming narrative is incorrect. it's important to be aware of the facts. but even if it was a factually correct version of events, it's... it's still wrong, to blame a child for their own murder.

and i would like the batfam to have to grapple with that, instead of pushing the implication that victim blaming is only bad if you're technically wrong about the facts.

nervous system - am i allowed to call my own work a hidden gem. is this allowed. i really really like nervous system still i think it's a fun little exploration. i love love love fanon pit madness but no one ever does in an interesting way. this is my attempt to do it in an interesting way.

the push and pull between guilt for everything he's done and the certainty that what he does is necessary is my ideal lost days/under the hood jason. i think he should be grossed out by some of the things he does but be willing to get his hands dirty, nonetheless! this is the role he has chosen to play and he is willing to make the sacrifices for it.

the little talia & jason hints i enjoy. we open the fic with him acknowledging that she manipulated him but the dagger she gifts him is still beloved.

(He came back to himself six miles away, curled up on a fire escape in the middle of Los Angeles, head buried in his arms, as if he could convince himself he still had a cape and the conviction that everything would turn out all right, if he just tried hard enough.)

-> implication that he knows thing will not be turning out all right even with his careful planning. he sure is trying!! he knows how his quest is doomed to end.

leds are 80-90% more efficient than incandescent lights - this fic was honestly a beautiful happy accident that resulted from me thinking about the words jason says in hush too much. "assigned outfit" because i'm gonna be real i don't think jason would have worn anything with the robin insignia on it if hush wasn't forcing him into it (because i'm a chronic tt29 overthinker).

lots of subtle little implications about how jason feels about bruce and also dick in here. jason bringing up dick unprompted but then claiming he does not care about dick at all... the stumbling over dad into mentor... fun little things like that. also tim isn't mentioned at all because while jason probably does have complicated feelings regarding the next robin it's not personal the way it is with bruce + dick.

"I will trap you in a hollow, steel ball, weld it shut, and dump you in the harbor." <- this line is a roundabout reference to moon knight (2021) issue #10, where moon knight does almost exactly that to waxman (a shapeshifter made of wax who seduces women so he can smother them to death). the steel ball gets encased in concrete as part of a building's foundation instead of being dumped in the harbor. but i found it a fun reference :) you should read moon knight (2021) btw.

anyway this is the origin of jason wearing that little domino mask with the white lenses. maybe he wears it later during uth as a callback to this, as another layer to remind bruce of that one time his son stood before him and bruce failed to recognize him. anyway.

lies of omission - i could probably talk for hours regarding the meta of this fic alone. but for now i've collected some of the smaller aspects of it that i find fun.

jason's casual trust for tim in ch3 going through a complete heel-turn into ch12 despite them having gotten along for something like 2 years at this point, because the fundamental reason jason trusts tim turned to to have never happened. so the rest of that relationship/trust simply evaporates in jason's eyes. at least until they get that all resolved.

damian's little sprinkle of jealousy towards how soft and gentle bruce is towards jason but seems incapable of extending the same affection towards damian. this too is a reflection of how much bruce has changed after jason's death.

it is just a friendship between steph and charlie (+ maybe a bonus crush) but it is important to me that charlie is on the cusp of discovering how hot he finds women capable of bench pressing him. he was feeling it with essence also

i think everyone forgot but let's pause to remember that ch18 is happening on dick's birthday. guess who is having the Worst Birthday Ever. this was not actually intentional when i was plotting out the timeline. sorry dickie.

jason's dialogue never includes italics because of how flat it is tonally, he wouldn't be able to put emphasize on words like that. he doesn't ever really laugh, either. he also wouldn't be able to do the upwards lilt for questions but for the sake of clarity i do allow him to have question marks.

in general i really do love how this fic has come together. the guy that kills jason in ch1 becomes part of the background casefic that's kept running until now. duke picking up an all-blade in ch6 becomes extremely relevant in ch15. the pi day celebration and references to damian's age actually matter!! i only planned some of these out. others were just details i sprinkled in and then realized i could do something really fun with multiple chapters down the line. it's pretty incredible how it weaves together so neatly.

this fic when you boil it down is about jason getting his boundaries violated for 66k words and counting. we're nearing the end soon. what do we think would be a thematically appropriate way to close this out. hmm.

Despite having thought about how I'd want to change The dancestors role (and Jake) in act 6 so they aren't as wasted (as my previous few asks/posts have talked about) I'm a lot less certain in what to do with the rest of the cast. Obviously Vriska learning from the example post-retcon Aranea sets by her learning and improving from her pre-retcon self-destructive spiral is important but beyond that? The only major changes in terms of main character changes is making Davekat not exist and thus not having both characters fall into trap of becoming shells of their former selves. its a bit surprising that despite how much I've thought about it after all these years, I still don't have a complete concrete vision of an Ideal act 6. Though I suspect its possibly because there are SO MANY ways to have done it differently and still have it be better, but on the other hand I'm not a writer (though I am DM and enjoy theory-crafting and world-building as hobbies) so actually tying down these things isn't wholly my forte. and in fairness, we are doing this all in hindsight, and most of us aren't in as shitty a situation as hussie put himself into. still at least 60% his fault, 10% his friends and relationships, 20% Hussie not planning this shit out in advance, and 10% Hussie giving special privileges to Vriska. [Primary ask] ==>So I'm curious (Possibly assuming we use the previous discussions as a base), what else would you change? Plot-lines, character development, ect. Have any of your previous thoughts on the matter (from... what? A year ago by now?) Changed any? This can be both for act 6/7, or even Dubiously Canon material. [Vent due to being annoyed by Junefags tagging their content that has nothing to do with John] ==> (Dear EVERYONE who thinks June makes sense. Still on the side of bringing back the dead trolls for Act 6 to help and be with the Alpha Kids and their session. Maybe have some of them confront with the Cherubs as both Calliope/Caliborn are antagonists. Both represent the fandom of both good and bad in the worst traits. The trolls and kids would have to find a way to stop them. In another scenario, have some of the dead trolls be with John and Jade during the ride for the Alpha session. Part of it could be an excuse to separate Eridan from Kanaya so she doesn't kill him again and he gets put under watch if he tries to pull anything. The trolls would confront the kids, conflicts about human vs troll standards in things like morals and quadrant relationships. Soon, they come to an understanding and agree to help each other out as friends. Davesprite as well would also have a chance to talk with his counterpart self to help give closure for his identity and knowing that a version of him will live his best life with his friends and the people he loves. Maybe have the once dead trolls keep an eye on the Alpha session and talk with them via Trollian while on the meteor. Let even the Beta Kids use it to talk with their descendants. Friendships blooming, possible ship hints for some, all working together to stop Lord English, The Condesce, Jack Noir, and Caliborn/Calliope. Each group fighting against them. One group of trolls fights Jack, Karkat and the others go up against The Condesce, Beta Kids get Lord English, and Alphas with Cherubs. Have assists from Nannasprite, Jaspersprite, and Davesprite. Once bad guys defeated, they all arrived on Earth C, Matriorb was made after Roxy have trust in the trolls, Wayward Vagabond is still present, no kingdoms, every country lives in democracy, and people can choose endings however they please. For me: JohnVris, DaveJade, Rosemary, Karezi, EriRoxy, FefNep, Arasol, DirkJake, EquiusJane, WVPM, Tavros making a special organization to make sure the animals on Earth C live peacefully with the citizens that it will be an allegory of how all of them are now living in Eden Paradise.

Ty for the super interesting fics

Thank you! Foxfangs crush on holly started in shattered stars when he saves her from the fox. However he's always liked her he just didn't realize it lol. I would love to write a small one shot from his perspective about his relationship with her growing up. I kinda shifted the time line slightly so that he and his sister were born only a moon or two after the three. So they played together a lot as kits and hung out as apprentices. He's always admired her loyalty to her clan and her faith in the warrior code. He also admires her ability to be a leader and her sense of justice. Unfortunately for foxfang holly is a lil too busy rn to notice so he's kinda just ya know screaming internally while icewing teases him about not being able to tell his crush he likes her lol.

As for hollyleaf and her brothers I do think that her being a part of the prophecy did help bring them closer together. In canon towards the end of long shadows we see holly perseverating about coming to realize she isn't special and that "plain old boring hollyleaf can't do anything" (btw that's how I think Vicky was feeling about her cause she couldn't think of a power also actual quote from the book). Anyways, I do think in canon holly not having a power kinda drive a wedge between her and her brothers and the moment she realized that she's not special is the moment that kinda solidified her being driven to kill ash and release the truth at the gathering. Interesting enough we kinda get this moment of realization in the last chapter ashfur is alive because she talks to him! She couldn't lean on her brothers because they were so much more above her and so much more important. I have to imagine how empty she felt, how lonely it must have been. Hollyleafs character is about control she based her whole life around it with the warrior code and the prophecy. The moment she lost both of those things she also lost her ability to lean on her brothers for support. It's the reason she didn't tell them what she did until she was hurling herself head first into the tunnels. She couldn't trust them to understand. Hell maybe she was right to after i was skimming the forgotten warrior last night and they acted like she was some vicious killer that shouldn't have come back when she returned. (Seriously what the fuck Erin's).

Anyways back to the au. Yeah by holly having a power she is still connected to her brothers. She isn't completely alone (emotionally and or mentally) in the canon which cements into the moment where when she does go to flee lionblaze goes after her and she changes her mind.

OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OKAY. LESBIANS LISTEN UP PLEASE. There was a show that ran for one season on SyFy. It’s really bad /pos. It’s jokey, it has goofy effects, it’s silly and serious at the same time, and it has LESBIANS in SPACE. The practical effects are so fun and I love that it doesn’t take itself seriously. I feel like fans of Star Trek would enjoy it. It’s also based on a comic but I don’t know anything about the comic. It’s called Vagrant Queen and it’s free on Tubi. The downside is that it was cancelled after one or two seasons, but I found it very enjoyable. Also the lesbians are like, There the whole time, I love watching their relationship develop. Please guys someone watch this show, I cannot be the only one.

Oh I guess actual plot also, it’s a sci fi show about a runaway queen who left royalty after watching her mother be killed by a rising rebellion, with the help of a himbo man trying to get back to his wife on earth, and a goofy sweetheart of a mechanic who is hopelessly in love with her. She finds out there are people still loyal to the crown who tell her that her mom is alive and they want to reinstate the royalty, so she has to decide whether or not to do that. There’s a political intrigue (loosely said) aspect between the current dictatorship type thing vs the royalty not actually being the greatest in the first place if I remember correctly. Imma be honest, I watched it for the lesbians LMAO

I have been told I seem a bit cold, shy, or overly-academic on the outside, but when people get to know me, they find out I can be very outgoing and I love to make people laugh. I am a very awkward person but I can usually spin it around to look like charisma instead. Humor is kind of my coping mechanism and I don't really have a filter. I worry a lot over small things, and sometimes minor occurrences send me spiralling, but I am oddly very calm in actual emergency situations. I like to joke I panic at small things so I dont have any anxiety left over for emergencies. My friends say I am the smart one of the group, but I like to think I am the comedic relief.

I dont actually have many dislikes. I tend to try to think positively of things. I suppose I am not a huge fan of sports, but I wouldn't say I dislike them. I'm not too fond of doing maths either, but on the right day it can be enjoyable. I think the one thing in my life that I truly dislike is that I am sick all the time. I have a chronic illness so I just feel like I perpetually have the flu.

I think - it might have been better for Mikey if he could have allowed himself the grace to step out of that role a bit, to trust Carmy and let him give back and help him when he was in trouble - but I can see howhe found it impossible. They were both forced by circumstances (and love) into roles and behaviors that have caused a lot of pain (and, for Mikey, he wasn’t able to find his way out of - he could imagine himself a posthumous “provider” for his little bro, giving him the money to go forward and do better, but he couldn’t picture himself part of that in a positive way and couldn't allow Carmy to give back/move into a more mutually supportive brotherly love with him).

Emmauel seems like a really good guy - he is very fatherly toward Sydney and would want to look out for her, but once he took Carmy’s measure I think they could build a good in-laws relationship. And he’s not the kind of guy who seems like he’d be pushy and paternalistic just to prove something - he’s very supportive of Sydney and worries about her, but he also *trusts* her re: the kind of life she wants, what her passions are, even when he doesn’t really understand them.

I grew up on a lot of cheesy action movies myself (and “dude genre” stuff generally) and there’s genuinely some good stuff there! Some of them have some real vibes about masculinity and wanting to be a good person in a cruel world. Which is why I referenced “Hard Target”–with its themes of fighting back against the rich exploiting homeless veterans–and I’m going to name-drop the first “Universal Soldier” at some point (maybe in sequel one-shots?) as well as the “The Equalizer” (2014)* which is just a perfectly paced, characterized, and structured action movie imo – there’s some neat stuff with the way Mikey was like – a father to Carmy as well as an older brother?? Which added to the stress Mikey felt and how he felt he couldn’t share his burdens with his baby brother. 

I was thinking of the sharing of these pop culture narratives about what it means to be a good man, between the two of them. A good man (and gentlemanly - strong and gentle) is something Carmy seems to really want to be. But, like with so many things in the story - where do you get that info/model? He’s learned from kitchen culture (both terrible and good things), but I wanted there to be something more re: pop culture and Mikey too. And for that to be something Emmanuel and him could find a chill guy thing to do together eventually.

(IMO outside of their art, where they’re AWESOME, neither Sydney nor Carmy have a very “sophisticated palate” - they simply don’t have the time for it, with how hard they’ve had to work at their area of expertise. So I don’t think either of them is a snob about movies etc!)

Once I’ve got the core narrative of my multi-chapter down, I plan to do some one shot stories here and there 🤞

*I rewatched it while writing my fic actually - because the way the widowed male lead there feels about his wife is so intensely romantic and resonates with how Carmy feels about Sydney in my story. “good afternoon, riff.” Y/N said in her thick puerto rican accent, meeting up with him in a secluded alleyway.

riff looked up from lighting his cigarette. “hey Y/N, how’s my lady feeling today?”

“good. and you?”

“my day has gotten a whole hell of a lot better now that you’re here.” riff replied.

riff and Y/N both knew how bizarre of a partnership their relationship was. gringos weren’t supposed to like puerto ricans, and vice versa. especially when riff is the leader of the jets, infamously known for being overprotective of their territory.

Y/N and riff met completely on accident. one day, riff stumbled across a group of puerto rican men beating up on a girl who he believed to be white at first. when he scared the men away and saw that the girl was, in fact, not white, he felt the need to help her anyway. normally, in any other circumstance, he wouldn’t have helped. but she seemed different than all the girls he’d been betrayed by in the past. she carried herself differently, and riff took note of that right away.

riff tried not to become friends with Y/N. and Y/N tried not to become friends with riff. she was extremely shy, and she didn’t want to let her walls down for riff. when Y/N mentioned to him that it was a regular occurrence for the group of older men to beat her up, riff couldn’t help but feel remorse for her. that was a weird feeling for him, as he had never truly experienced it before, especially with a puerto rican girl. given her inherited introverted nature, riff wanted to keep the men that hurt Y/N at bay for as long as possible.

riff tried his hardest to avoid Y/N because he knew if any of the jets saw him anywhere near a puerto rican, he’d practically be exiled. however, something about her kept drawing him back. maybe it was because he desperately craved an escape from living his life as a gang leader. whatever it may be, as more and more time passed, the more often he found himself with Y/N. eventually, a casual friendship developed into a secret romance.

riff opened his arm to give Y/N a hug. given her small stature, she rested her head just below his shoulder in the hug, and riff reached down to reciprocate it.

“what would you like to do today?” Y/N asked, pulling away.

“not like we can go many places, right?” riff replied, taking a puff from his cigarette.

Y/N loved her relationship with riff, despite hating how secretive it had to be. she completely understood why he needed to keep it a secret, it was just a downside to falling in love with a gang leader.

she shrugged in response, looking down.

“you’re extra quiet today, what’s wrong?” riff asked bluntly, stepping closer to her.

“i’m always quiet, riff.”

he laughed and ruffled her hair playfully. “i know that, i just thought you seemed even more quiet than usual, that’s all.”

Y/N shrugged. “i know, i just wish we could do more together. i wish we didn’t have to hide.”

riff sighed, rubbing her shoulders with his hands. “i know girly girl, but it’s safer for the both of us if we keep it a secret. my boys find out, i’m dead. your people find out, you’re dead. the more secretive we are, the better.”

Y/N looked down, and he wrapped an arm around her shoulders. “we can still have fun today.”

after more discussing, the couple decided on playing card games, eating snacks, and resting for the whole day at riff’s place.

riff’s hang out spot was an abandoned train car in the junkyard. he had set up a small table and a bed for him to rest on. for him, it was home. Y/N liked the simplicity of his “house”. she wasn’t into everything lavish and grand.

Y/N couldn’t decide if riff let her win at cards over and over again, or if she was actually really good at them. but, she also figured riff would actually play every so often so she would lose, and riff could tease her about being bad at cards. regardless of the outcome, she enjoyed this valuable time with him.

after a few hours into one of their last games, riff sat up in his spot, holding up a finger that silenced Y/N.

“riff, what-”

“shhh!” he interrupted, listening. Y/N sunk back in her chair a bit.

then, she heard it too. it was the sound of footsteps growing closer and closer to riff’s train car.

“shit,” riff started, standing up. “you gotta hide.”

“hide, seriously?” she whispered back.

“yes, i mean it. these people will not approve of you, and i don’t want them to hurt you, now hide!”

Y/N scrambled to find a sufficient spot to hide in riff’s small abode. suddenly, she realized there was just enough space under his bed for her to hide.

“go, go!” riff said, helping her under the bed. when she disappeared, he sat quietly at his table when a knock sounded on the metal outside his home. Y/N held her breath, trying to keep anxious tears from spilling out of her eyes.

“who is it?” riff asked monotonously.

“a-rab and tiger.”

riff lit a cigarette and took a quick puff. “come in.”

they stepped into his train car and looked around. “who were you talking to in here, riff?” a-rab asked.

riff kept the cigarette he was smoking resting on his lips. “no one.”

“so you were talking to yourself?” tiger asked, not believing riff for a second.

“yes.” riff said coldly, with a sharp “s”.

a-rab squinted at him, before smiling playfully. “you hidin’ a girl here, riff?”

“no.”

“then how ‘bout we have a look around?” asked tiger.

“not like you can even look around much, this is a small place.” riff replied.

meanwhile, Y/N watched the feet from outside the bed walk past multiple times, and it took all of her energy to not make a noise. she was frightened of riff’s friends.

she watched as a pair of shoes stopped in front of the bed, and before she knew it, a pair of eyes that weren’t riff’s caught sight of Y/N. she snapped her own eyes shut, hoping that if she didn’t see him, he wouldn’t see her.

“oh tiger, i think i found something.”

“a lady?” tiger asked, bending down to take a look.

“yep, riff’s hiding a lady.”

“and for good reason too,” riff started harshly. “there’s a reason she had to hide when she heard you two. she doesn’t want anything to do with you.”

“we just want to meet the lucky gal.” tiger said.

“no means no, tiger. now leave.” riff said with a very stern tone.

tiger and a-rab exchanged looks, before going on either side of the makeshift bed and lifting it to the side before riff could stop them.

tiger and a-rab gawked at the sight before them. “woah.” they both saw that Y/N was puerto rican, and not white like they had expected. she had light tear marks on her face.

Y/N looked up to the men and saw their confused, angry, and hurt faces before backing herself as close to the wall as possible.

“you assholes!” riff yelled, storming over to the two jets.

“riff, what the hell is this?” tiger asked.

“how could you do this to the jets? how could you betray us like this?” a-rab continued. “she’s puerto rican!”

“you guys didn’t have to see this. i kept this a secret for a reason. you guys stormed in here and did your own thing, and now we’re all angry. you two need to leave. as your leader, that is an order.” riff yelled, stepping closer to the boys.

Y/N watched the scene unfold in front of her in horror. tiger turned to her, and began to speak. “what have you done to riff?” he started. “he used to be like us. what kind of puerto rican witch shit did you do to make him like you?”

Y/N froze, trying to find words. she stuttered as more slow tears fell out of her eyes. she hated that she was so shy.

“look, she can’t even speak when spoken to, lousy pig!” a-rab yelled.

“hey!” riff yelled again, pushing the boys towards the opening of his train car. “the only person that gets to say anything about Y/N, positive or negative, is me, you hear? now scram before i take a chain to your head.”

he pushed them again and they ran out, not looking back. riff watched as they ran far away.

riff whipped his head around and saw Y/N crying on the floor. he walked over to her, sat down next to her, and wrapped his arm around her shoulders. she leaned her head in and rested her head on his chest, and riff kissed the top of her head.

“i’m sorry, Y/N. i’m so, so sorry.” riff said quietly, gently rubbing her arm.

Y/N lifted her head up and looked at riff. he turned his head so his eyes met hers. “i was scared, that’s all. i guess this crying is a little over dramatic, isn’t it?” she said, laughing a bit.

riff wiped her tears away. “yeah, it is.” he teased.

Y/N giggled, and riff laughed back. “i’m kidding, you handled it just fine. i’m happy they didn’t do anything to you.”

the two sat comfortably together until Y/N fully calmed down. when she did, they stood up, and riff looked down on her. he held her hands in his own for a moment, and then he let go of one and placed it on the side of her face, tilting her head up so she looked at him.

“you know, i always forget how short you are.” riff whispered.

Y/N rolled her eyes. “riff, ni siquiera vayas allí. don’t even go there.”

Relationship Headcanons for Yami Sukehiro

Yami develops a soft spot for you really quickly. He loves that you actually seem to appreciate his dirty, childish humor. And on those occasions when you beat him to the punch with some crude joke, he can't help but feel proud

To be honest, Yami friend-zones you for a while unless you explicitly state your feelings for him. The most important people in his life are are his squad mates so it's kind of a habit for him to group anyone he likes into that category.

If left to his own devices, he will catch on eventually. But even then, it's kind of slow. He starts to realize the way your laugh gives him a warm feeling in his chest, and that some of your compliments actually make him feel a bit flustered/shy around you.

He also starts to be more aware of himself when he knows you're going to be around. He notices he starts to be more concerned about his appearance and manners. Part of him is still in denial though and tries to attribute his behavior to something silly like stress or illness.

When he finally comes clean to you, he tries to be as nonchalant as possible even though he's so nervous. His heart is racing and his palms are sweating, but he'll have that easy smirk on his face when he asks if you want to "be his girl/guy/etc."

As a boyfriend, Yami is very much into physical affection. It's natural for him to always have an arm around you or to have you in his lap whenever he's lounging around. Softer stuff like holding hands isn't really his thing though.

In front of others, he'll press kisses to your temple or top of your head but spicier kisses are reserved for behind closed doors. And he REALLY likes those kisses.

Yami isn't the type to get jealous. He trusts you completely and never worries about you going off to do things on your own or with friends. He wants you to live your life and have fun. He knows you'd never do anything to be disloyal to him. After all, the opposite is also true.

He's normally super relaxed and chill, but it doesn't matter where he is or what he's doing, if someone starts talking or acting inappropriately towards him he immediately gets super serious and makes it very clear that he's taken and won't stand for anyone crossing his boundaries.

This might be obvious, but Yami is extremely supportive both as a friend and as a partner. He wants to know your goals and will push you and cheer you on as you work towards them. Sometimes he can go overboard with the "push past your limits" stuff, but you know he means well. He just wants you to be happy and successful.

"Settling down" is a bit of a foreign concept to Yami. He's not against it but it's never been something he's thought a lot about or considered important. You will change that though! It scares him a little how often he thinks about "tying the knot" and it REALLY freaks him out when he starts imagining starting a family with you.

He will not bring this stuff up first. It has to come from you. The moment you express a desire to get married though, he's hopping on his broom and flying off to find the best ring to give you.

And if you bring up kids, he'll be open to talking about it. Really, he's cool with the idea of having his own little rugrats running around. He's used to taking people under his wing too, so if you want to adopt or have children of your own, either option is acceptable for him.

okay so first off wlw jasico bc yes. i love them sm. nico deals with a lot of dysphoria and comphet, a good deal of that comes from growing up closeted in the 30s. she's still got the idea that all "real" girls settle down with a nice guy and start a family, which she doesn't want, so it causes her a deal of dysphoria. after she spends some time at cj, she makes good friends with reyna and jason, both of whom are openly queer at the time. jason being bi and reyna being trans as well. they share experiences and help her learn to accept and love the fact that she's trans and a lesbian. eventually, he and jason develop feelings for each other but keep their relationship private. not necessarily secret, but they didn't go around telling everyone about the details and intricacies of their relationship.

now onto mlm pipeyna. i really like the idea of transmasc lesbian reyna in the normal pjoverse so naturally in a genderbent au im a sucker for the idea of transfem gay reyna. i think reyna would come to terms with himself fairly easily, given the fact that he doesn't really wanna change much about himself??? i see him still going by he/him pronouns because of familiarity and adding they/them pronouns to the list. both sets offer a certain kind of comfort for two entirely different reasons. they knew they liked guys since they were like 11 and basically just said "oh. yeah ok we'll go with this." didn't really tell anyone, just kinda let them figure it out when they never talked about any girls they liked and mentioned his various boyfriends he's had over the years. they're not too invested in romance but enjoy it and are a overall very good partner. piper i think probably took more time to accept themself, but when they did they had a very "oh you don't like it? sucks ig" attitude towards people who gave her shit about it. so im very much lead to believe that the two of them were comfortable with each other right off the bat and eventually developed feelings for one another. reyna took more time to develop feelings i think, but eventually were cool with how they saw piper and asked him out.

rqst: college au for nanami, geto and gojo?

a/n: so i divided it into three categories to help keep my head straight. honestly almost straight kicked gojo out of college bc i couldn’t decide on a major for him. the jjk discord server is heaven sent for my sanity. ty everyone again 🌺

last time i should have to post these. hoping everything is fine now. 

gojo satoru

MAJOR

—he starts off undecided for a long time. the fact that he’s on scholarship allows him to be more flexible with his classes given that he’s not responsible for costs. he grew up with expectations from his family but university is suppose to be his opportunity to spread his own wings and grow from his experiences.

—so he tries a bit of everything- sciences, music and social studies- anything to prompt a spark. (took a business class once and made a point to sit next to nanami everyday just to annoy him) by his second year he’s getting as frustrated as his counselor because if he doesn’t decide soon he’ll be a potential 5th year senior.

—he’s overthinking it but gojo wants to invest in what he believes will make the most significant impact to his ability. his counselor takes those crumbs and runs with it.

—he gets steered towards political science and actually excels at it (that advisor gets a raise). surprises most of the class with his analytical skills because they thought he was just a pretty boy- surprise he’s beautiful and smart.

—develops a vested interest in governmental policies. might run for president one day idk. brings donuts to his early am class. doesn’t share.

SOCIAL

—he’s not the jock per say, but as the star athlete of the basketball team, the school likes to take advantage of his image to draw in sponsors.

—his face is plastered all over the auditorium whether they’re in season or not. sometimes it’s not even to promote basketball, gojo is pretty and they’re not afraid to use it. which also makes him one of the most recognizable faces on campus.

—due to his student athlete contract, he’s not allowed to sign autographs freely in the event they’re attempted to be sold as quick cash. but yikes, he can barely walk to class without someone stopping him for a picture. to the best of his ability he tries to laugh it off, poster boy image and all, but it gets pretty fucking old and annoying quickly. especially when it makes him late for his next lesson and the instructor shows no sympathy.

—his height didn’t only help him get into basketball, but its also convenient when it comes to shouldering politely through the student masses. his golden rule is don’t make eye contact. the busier the crowds the easier it is for him to pretend like he could’t possibly have heard them.

—gojo doesnt scout fraternities, fraternities scout him. but he’s not interested in the slightest. as an athlete he already gets into any social circle he wants without the additional effort. that and he doesnt think he could tolerate an alpha male trying to exert his dominance without barking back.

—loves to show up to parties but always arrives late enough to the point where they don’t think he’s coming. it helps him slip in when he wants too. he’s a connoisseur of all alcohol varieties and a master of beer bong. he’s not necessarily the life of the party but his presence is kind of hard to miss.

RELATIONSHIPS

—he gets too much attention to date casually. most potential suitors are in it more for the benefits they receive than him anyway. he’s got enough on his plate with career indecisiveness and games to try to pursue anything serious before third year.

—he’s not completely celibate though. he tries to keep the same partners as long as he can. not only to keep himself clean and safe but because he often goes into an agreement to keep it casual. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. either way he gets coined as a ‘heartbreaker’ before the end of his freshman year. frankly the rumors obscure most of the truth and give him more freedom. people always expect that he’s with someone even when he’s not, which helps keep his invasive teammates off his back.

—gojo can easily graduate without securing something tangible but there is still a window for potential.

—you’re both his consistent classmate and occasional friends with benefits. its the former title that keeps bringing him back around. he cant exactly avoid you without subjecting himself to 8am classes. it helps that the sex is good too.

—he can text you an offer to study together for the next test and roll over after an hour and wreck you for the rest of the week. its hard to tell who gets addicted first but he does appreciate the way your skin looks when youre wearing his marks.

geto suguru

MAJOR

—he’s a STEM kid, particularly interested in bio-genetics to improve overall health. he believes that simply becoming a physician just keeps the issue at bay and his goal is to eradicate the problem at its source.

—since high school he’s been cataloging different programs across the country before deciding what he wanted and putting all his efforts into it. so it’s no surprise when he gets in.

—geto doesn’t need counselors but they’re required so he listens to them prattle on about using university as an opportunity to explore. this man came in with more college credits than most sophomores, he knows what he wants.

—always on-time to class and never misses an assignment. also that kid who goes above and beyond, even on the simple stuff. he rarely gets teased about it, not even behind his back. geto straight up scares some people even when he’s smiling.

—not afraid to correct teachers when they’re wrong. in fact he lives for it.

—he’s the one who graduated early and starts his master’s program before most of his age group declare their own majors.

SOCIAL

—he tends to frequent the same circles- handpicking his acquaintances out of class rosters, clubs and honor lists. he’s less in it for the friendship and more so to scout for potential research partners.

—met gojo in one of his science electives and literally carried him through the class. they somehow end up friends but only really hang out at each other’s places- bunch of chill movie nights and pizza.

—there is no interest in fraternities, but he does join university funded clubs that allow him to further his research. they give him unique access to labs, take him on trips to different conventions and have an alumni list a kilometer long for future collaborations.

—the man does not party but he will occasionally slip into quieter bars to ease some of his frustrations. he actually enjoys karaoke thursdays , not to sing for himself but the drunken antics of others bring him some amusement.

—smokes weed occasionally, but only his own product. it helps him relaxand fan out the stress. he never sells it but sometimes gojo nicks some of his stash. given that he gets drug tested often, geto doesn’t know how the athlete never gets caught.

RELATIONSHIPS

—not interested in seeking out relationships in the slightest. the man has a plan and he’s already married to it.

—he’s not completely immune to sexual advances though and occasionally splurges but none of the friends with benefits crap. he’ll hit it once and stay celibate for the rest of the year easily.

—you might be able to squeeze in as his fellow lab partner. remain invested in the work and not him and he’ll start noticing the little details of your company- the way you subtle perfume lingers on his lab coat hours after you’ve adorned for the day, how he knows you have to keep your hair up for safety precautions but he thinks about running his fingers through it daily and your mind, damn, he wonders what else you can come up with when he has you laid out on his sheets.

—if he’s interested, geto won’t hesitate to broach the topic. he’ll ask you out for coffee and when you try to bring up research he’ll be upfront about his attraction. ultimately if you start dating the two of you are an absolute unit- not that you weren’t before.

—you’re the one variable he didn’t plan for but he’s glad to have added you to the equation.

nanami kento

MAJOR

—he was made for the business world, brought by a CEO who raised him to inherit the company. administration major marketing minor.

—takes initiative in all his classes and is often coined as group leader for projects. mostly keeps to himself  and only speaks up when prompted or disagrees with something.

—he takes the earliest sessions possible because it means less people more often than not. doesn’t really care if its in the front, middle or back but always sits near the edge.

—doesn’t really want to but it looks good on his resume so he joins the marketing team where they present mock business plans for competitions. they win a lot. nanami honestly doesn’t care. but again it looks good.

—it only took him a brief summer internship to learn that he found nothing satisfying about board meetings and macro management.

—he decides to invest in law school to handle the company from a legal standpoint instead.

SOCIAL

— sort of like geto, only wants to make friends on a need be basis.

—he would rather keep to himself but knows the benefits of socializing so he interacts with his frequent classmates when he can- through study groups or car pooling to seminars.

—he does join a fraternity, its the same one his father did (and uncles, cousins, whatnot. its a generational thing). its geared towards bettering future leaders. they focus building resumes, charity events and run the organization like a proper business. nanami gets elected president by his third year and runs two terms.

—the only parties he attends are networking events- full of wine and fancy horderves. wine is plentiful but he’s always nursing a scotch on top of his headache. if one more person squeezes their stocks into a conversation he’s going to personally take down the whole market

—zero interest in college party life. spends some of his downtime at the campus theater watching old time movies and classic plays.

—he’s the coffee shop hoe. he wakes up early sometimes just to sit by the window and read some casual literature. has his own thermo that gives him free refills to cart to class. do not talk to this man before he’s had his caffeine.

RELATIONSHIP

—he probably has a high school sweetheart that he’s still clinging too, whether on the same campus or long distance. it helps him because he can’t really see himself pursuing a relationship while focusing on school.

—he’s been with you long enough that you understand his ambitions and won’t feel bested by them. the two of you have a system- starting the day off with sweet ‘good morning’ texts before class and ending the day with long conversations as you digest the last 12 hours.

—nanami is independent but he is thankful to have you to rely on when classes start to overwhelm him. the two of try to escape briefly for the weekend when you can. often going to near by reservations just to get off campus

—other times the two of you will cuddle close on your dorm bed, his long fingers combing through your hair while he reads over some notes for class.

—sometimes you have to be the one to tell him to take a break and to enjoy life while he can. even if that means dragging him the events and concerts hosted on campus. he resists at first but you can see the tension ebbing away as the night comes to a close.

—the two of you start living together in your senior year just because you can. he insists on buying a house. not only because he can afford it because it can be rented out after graduation. always the business man.

I'm not like actively promoting the alphabet prompts, but I'm definitely taking them when they come in! I think a lot of people have a character they love, but struggle to come up with a specific prompt or idea for me, so they help for that~ NSFW 18+ v

Ashe:

A (aftercare): This was actually one of the earlier prompts I was asked, so go take a look here if you like!

I (intimacy): For Ashe, the main purpose of sex is intimacy. He finds it difficult to be aroused for someone he doesn't deeply care for (I would perhaps qualify him as demisexual), so if he's sleeping with you, he wants to be intimate with you. He knows his fingers are a bit roughened from his bowstring, but his touch itself is so soft and tender and loving- and his hands wander quite a bit during sex, down your back, along the curve of your thighs, anywhere he can reach.

D (dirty secret): Once Ashe has fallen for you, you're more or less all he can think about when he masturbates. He feels terrible about this at first, and will even eventually confess it to you in bed- but with your permission, he'll indulge in extremely involved and well developed fantasies about you, even incorporating story-lines and dialogue as it comes to him. If you've told him you don't mind him pleasuring himself to thoughts of you, it's an enormous weight off his shoulders, and he finds it so easy to slip into erotic daydreams. Ferdinand:

A (aftercare): Ferdie views aftercare as a continuation of the joys of sexual intimacy, and puts as much effort into it as any other part of pleasing you. He'll clean you up while peppering your face and body with tender kisses, praising you all the while for how good you felt, how gorgeous you are, how deeply he loves you. Frankly, the aftercare even becomes more involved the more time goes on- if you don't talk him down, he'll end up with a collection of different scented massage oils, lit candles around his bed, and more.

I (intimacy): Naturally, his instinct is to be very intimate in bed. D (dirty secret): Remember how I just said that Ferdinand can get filthy and raunchy? Yeah. A very fun game is to edge Ferdie, stroking the impressive length of his cock while goading him into confessing to fantasies of you tying him up, choking him, tugging his hair- and that's the more vanilla side of things, if you're willing to really indulge him. These fantasies usually tend toward him being the submissive party, but he's certainly also considered covering your body in his cum, or fucking into your mouth until he visibly bulges out against your throat. P (pace): Oh, Ferdie loves to take his time. Part of it is out of a sense of propriety- it seems brutish and ignoble to rush sexual gratification. Heavens forbid he become the kind of man to merely satisfy his own urges without taking proper care of his lover! However, he also enjoys so many aspects of foreplay, always happy to take the time to explore any positions you may like. He's always noticing more to adore about the process of maximizing your pleasure- everything from the way your nails drag through his hair to getting to feel your nipples harden against his lips- the little things really get him riled.

“There is no one right way to live”

Adventure and 02 really make up an unusual series in many ways, and I think one of them is how kind it is to the human condition. One of its most consistent commitments is to portraying its kids as “real children” -- as in, messy kids with some very deep nuances to their behavior, in ways that don’t reflect what you’d usually expect from media tropes. In some ways, it ended up backfiring (tropes are not inherently a bad thing, and it’s led to miscommunication that persists to this day because the audience has to fight a tendency to read the characters through the kinds of tropes we’re all expecting to find), but it also had the effect that these kids could be intimately relatable to the audience in ways that “textbook” portrayals of kids often wouldn’t be.

Adventure had eight main characters in its human cast, which was extended to twelve in 02 -- a massive balancing act -- and yet took the stance that none of these twelve characters’ very different ways of thinking or living life are fundamentally wrong. Rather, it celebrates the differences between them, and encourages them to embrace them about themselves. But it also does not shy away from the struggles those with each line of thinking might have in terms of communicating and interacting with the world. It’s easy to say words like “be yourself”, but what does “be yourself” really mean?

“Each character’s way of thinking”

Most people tend to define “character development” by “how much the character changed over the course of the narrative”, but if you look carefully, not all of the characters change that much. In fact, Koushirou and Miyako’s character arcs are about how they shouldn’t have to change much about themselves!

What we do get to see, however, is everyone’s intimate thought processes. We’re given so much information about each kid’s background and how it shapes their ways of thinking, and how they react to given situations, that you can get six fanfiction writers who have studied the series well and give them a completely hypothetical situation with some of the characters, and most if not all of them will roughly agree, because each kid’s thought pattern is so well detailed that you can easily imagine how they’d behave even when the scenario is hypothetical.

This, despite the fact that Adventure and 02 rarely use internal monologue (this is something specific to its Japanese version; while Japanese anime generally has less of this compared to Western shows, Adventure and 02 are unusually low on this even compared to later Digimon series, and it’s a possible byproduct of the narrative being eventually revealed to be from Takeru’s perspective and not someone truly omniscient). This is something that also somewhat backfired in that characters who are difficult to read or unaware of their own feelings become very difficult for the audience to read, so you have to read their behavior patterns and put two and two together (such as Takeru outright lying about his feelings regarding his childhood in Adventure episode 12, or Sora’s testimony about her confrontation with her mother not quite tracking with what’s actually depicted in Adventure episode 26). It does, however, have a very powerful weapon that it uses to help the audience understand each character’s mentalities and what they’re thinking at a given moment...

Digimon partners! In a sense, “talking with a Digimon partner” is a replacement for internal monologue, because the kids spill their internal feelings to their partners as if they’re talking to themselves. (Protip for all of you fanfic writers out there who struggle to figure out how to integrate the Digimon smoothly into the narrative: “cutting out most of your internal monologue and replacing it with a conversation with a Digimon partner” is one of your most reliable fallbacks.) This is helpful for characters like Koushirou, who initially starts off Adventure as very isolated from the others but immediately takes well to Tentomon, and Ken, who spends a good part of 02′s third quarter still very emotionally distant from the others and not entirely willing to open up to them, but very conversely willing to open up to his own partner. Iori converses about his conflicted feelings regarding the situation with Upamon during the process of forming his Jogress relationship with Takeru, and, back in Adventure, Takeru himself was willing to show his more “less well-behaved” side in front of Patamon that he normally wouldn’t when he was constantly in the presence of elders.

On top of that, Digimon partners being reflective of the kids’ own personalities in some sense means that they are very good at asking just the right questions at the right time, or saying perfectly well-timed things that the kids needed to hear the most, to get them to reconsider their position or realize that they might be going in the wrong direction...

Moreover, we get a lot of help in 02 simply by virtue of the fact it’s about relationships -- I’ve said this a few times before, but 02 is not a series about platitudes or toxic positivity, and has a strong emphasis on “you must understand the other person’s feelings if you want to truly reach out to them.” Showering happy platitudes about friendship on them means nothing if you’re still technically dismissing their feelings and making zero attempt to figure out why they feel this way! Therefore, everyone only accepts Ken when they each come to understand his feelings on the situation, and the Jogress arcs involve the relevant parties making active attempts to “understand the other person’s feelings” and what exactly makes them behave the way they do, before addressing their problems using what they need most at that moment. Being able to push people forward in a positive direction requires having a proper understanding of all of the negativity that came with it, accepting them in spite of that, and choosing to address what they need.

And in 02 episode 49, Daisuke says something that embodies a lot of Adventure and 02′s attitude towards these things: it’s not a sin to have feelings. Your reaction or way of seeing things, based on your backgrounds and experiences that have shaped you, is not something you can be blamed for having, whether that means being worried, sad, frustrated, angry, resentful, what have you. The only question is what you do in response to your feelings.

It’s easy to say “be yourself”, but that’s obviously a problem if you “be yourself” by rampantly ignoring what other people think and trampling on other people’s feelings, and it’s also a problem if “being yourself” is causing problems for others, and it’s especially a problem if “being yourself” is also hurting yourself while you’re at it -- so what does it mean to be true to yourself?

It’s not about your inherent personality traits, it’s about what you choose to do with them

As I said earlier, Adventure and 02 all arguably celebrate the fact that everyone is so different, and has their own skills to contribute to the group. Everyone has different strengths and weaknesses, and everyone makes up for each other’s weaknesses when they work together. And some of these characters do change in order to become “better people”. But what does being a “better person” mean? How does that tie into still “being true to yourself”, and yet changing at the same time?

02 episode 18 has Miyako in possibly one of her worst bouts of loss of control -- she has an effective panic attack and starts yelling at everyone in all directions, resulting in Hawkmon getting hurt. However, everyone here understands that Miyako meant well and was trying her best given the situation, and nobody scorns her for it, with Hikari even arranging for Miyako and Hawkmon to have proper space to emotionally air things out. Again: it was not a sin for Miyako to have feelings of anxiety, but it was a problem once those feelings led to causing trouble for others -- as in, trampling on their feelings, not having enough regard for their welfare, and such. Well-intentioned or not, Miyako just caused problems, and for that, Miyako labels herself as a “bad” person (tying into her ongoing character arc that involved negatively comparing herself to more mature and put-together people). However, Hawkmon assures her that he likes her the way she is.

But Miyako can’t keep going on like this -- it would obviously be very bad for her to keep being inconsiderate and trample on others’ feelings! But what does happen is that Miyako simply learns to channel these traits in the correct direction -- it’s established that, on the flip side, her being over-the-top brings joy to other people by making them laugh (02 episodes 31, 36, 38), and her aggressive personality is able to reach out to those like Hikari who are too closed in and on another unhealthy extreme! And as it turns out, she is capable of channeling all of those “aggressive” qualities into “aggressively”...reaching out to others and proactively supporting them; all she needed was a bit better sense of regulation so that her energy would go to the places she wanted them to be, rather than rampantly all over the place to the point of causing trouble. She didn’t have to fundamentally change herself into someone like Mimi or Hikari; it was just about adjusting her way of going about things just enough so that she could become more considerate.

Even all the way back in Adventure episode 10, all of the “problems” caused in this episode specifically have to do with Koushirou ending up (accidentally) being inconsiderate to Mimi and Palmon and not taking their feelings enough into account. Again, Koushirou is not treated as if his feelings are wrong or malicious -- he even states that he thinks that the research he’s doing will help everyone in the long run -- but his way of handling this situation is awful, and, regardless of his intent, Mimi and Palmon are feeling abandoned and tossed aside.

For the rest of the series, Koushirou learns to hone his existing skills in analysis -- even his fixation tendencies are treated as a potentially valuable trait -- and, once we learn the details about how he started keeping distance from everyone due to the shock of learning he was adopted and his social anxiety tendencies in Adventure episode 38, Koushirou momentarily tries to force himself to use casual language, and his parents assure him that he doesn’t have to force himself to change. In the end, it’s not an inherent sin for Koushirou to have social anxiety, nor that he needs more time to adjust to becoming more casual with others -- according to Adventure episode 54, he does want to get closer to others eventually, but even Tentomon says he shouldn’t force himself. Koushirou “working past” his social issues doesn’t mean he suddenly has to turn himself into a socialite overnight, but rather, he simply needs to do enough to be able to communicate with others without (accidentally or otherwise) ignoring others’ important feelings. Thus, in 02, he’s still working on becoming less distant from everyone, but he’s managed to become someone who can communicate with and organize people, and is well-respected for it.

A recurring theme in Adventure and 02 is that there’s a good and a bad side to everything, and so if we look at the twelve kids over Adventure and 02, we can see that a lot of the “good things” and “bad things” about them really stem from the same thing:

Taichi: Being an ambitious person who can oversee people in disparate places and bring them together (good) also means that he’s not always good at checking the nuances or other potentially negative contingencies, and can be rather insensitive (bad)

Yamato: Being emotionally sensitive to others means he can be passionate and open about everything, and compassionate to others (good), but also means he can get explosively angry and lose control of himself (bad)

Sora: Being caring towards others and supportive (good) means that she can also end up developing self-destructive tendencies due to her perceived obligations to others (bad)

Koushirou: Being constantly curious and fixated on learning more means he can get to the bottom of things and answer questions that others can’t (good) but also means he can get too absorbed in it and not be able to take others into account (bad)

Mimi: Being extremely sensitive and empathetic means that she’s open-minded, compassionate, and all-loving (good) but also that she takes any kind of discomfort or emotionally draining thing extra hard, and may all too often be unable to take a stand even when she really should (bad)

Jou: Being constantly invested in everyone’s welfare and compelled to help them means he���s very honest and dutiful and otherwise reliable (good) but also means he can make very reckless decisions because he’s so stressed about everyone and everything (bad)

Takeru: Being good at maintaining an atmosphere of moderation and generally being able to handle very tough things means that he has a very strong grip on himself and doesn’t cause trouble for others easily (good) but also means he’s prone to sudden and irrational emotional outbursts because he’s suppressing so badly that he gets no catharsis and isn’t being honest about his own feelings (bad)

Hikari: Being compassionate and all-loving means that she can put her foot down easily for the sake of others and advocate for kindness (good) but also means that her desire to not be a burden on others makes her compulsively unable to vocalize any of her own personal problems to the point of self-destruction and passiveness (bad)

Daisuke: Being so deferential to others and pure-hearted means that he can focus practically on what needs to be done and be a supportive person to others (good) but also means that he’s prone to insecurity, defensiveness, and lack of assertiveness in the face of others (bad)

Miyako: Being over-the-top and full of bright energy means that she can bring joy to others and can reach out to those who have troubles (good) but also means that she has difficulty having restraint from losing control of herself (bad)

Iori: Being humble and a principled person means that he’s good at approaching things directly and driven by a constant desire to do good (good) but also can be so fixated on those principles that he clings onto them even far beyond practicality, and is constantly restraining himself more than should be necessary (bad)

Ken: Being assertive and able to have firm will means that he can get what he wants done for others and show kindness when he needs to (good) but also means that the same assertiveness can be used for uncontrolled sadism and inflicting pain on others (bad)

So, again: all of these characters are encouraged to embrace all of the good things about themselves, and to channel them in ways that are productive or healthy or help them live happily alongside others; all of those “bad” traits also being there doesn’t necessarily mean they have to blot out those personality aspects that have good sides to them as well! It’s just that those “bad” things need to be kept in check so that they don’t cause trouble, and you can read all of these character arcs in ways that involve everyone changing just enough to make sure those “bad” things don’t go rampant and cause problems everywhere -- and everyone’s an imperfect human being, so it’s unlikely that they’ve completely gotten rid of those entirely even into adulthood -- but they have better awareness of what they need to do, and how to better adjust themselves into better people.

Look at the difference between Ken and Daisuke -- Ken had to go through some massive changes because, as the Kaiser, his “bad” traits were going over the top and causing all sorts of harm to everyone, and there was a huge journey he had to go through to get that all in check, whereas Daisuke was always clearly a very pure-hearted person from the get-go and didn’t have to adjust himself as much. Yet you could say the same thing about both of them -- by Ken learning that his efforts and assertiveness were misplaced, and by Daisuke getting around his constant insecurity and need for validation in order to better lead everyone forward, they basically did the same thing, just in different ways, and they’re both better people for it.

And it’s also the philosophy Jou endorses in Adventure episode 50 -- Mimi and Jou aren’t people who are necessarily best at fighting, and this isn’t inherently a sin. It’s just that they need to find ways to productively play to their own strengths in ways that are true to themselves. If Mimi can’t bring herself to engage in direct violence, she can at least use her skills to bring together everyone else who wants to protect the Digital World and prevent more casualties, and if Jou is, by his own admission, “not strong”, he can consider a path ahead of him that involves becoming a healer who can help those who are wounded, and prevent casualties that way.

There is no one right way to live.

What it is you want to do

Here’s an interesting question about the 02 epilogue, and, while we’re at it, 02 episode 50 as a whole: Why are “careers” brought up so much? Timeskip epilogues are hardly new to 02 (and of course have popped up in media for years thereafter), but not all of them involve careers, and even fewer of them have that much focus on shoving “careers” into your face as the main centerpoint, especially since usually this kind of thing would be about family lives or romance or something (and we can say a lot about how the 02 epilogue cared so much about the career thing that it was blatantly prioritizing it over the hot-topic romance issue of Yamato and Sora).

Because, in the end, a career -- or, perhaps, a “future aspiration”, because various details about how the epilogue is presented indicate that “the career that defines your income and adult life” may not actually be the correct term here -- is the ultimate manifestation of “what it is you want to do with your life”. The point driven home by 02 episode 50 is that such a thing should be “what you want to do”, and, given that this was originally supposed to be the Adventure ending before 02 was conceived, it also ties into Adventure’s own theme of “finding your own path”. All of those “careers” listed in the 02 epilogue feel a lot more nonsensical when you think about it in terms of the material hobbies they had during the series, but make significantly more sense when you frame it in terms of what kind of personality each person had and what they would prioritize. Materially, if you think about what Taichi had as a “hobby” during Adventure and 02, it would be soccer, but when you think about him being “an ambitious, wide-reaching leader who brings people from different places together”, his career of “diplomat to bring two worlds together” makes much more sense. It wasn’t about what they’re doing to pay the bills; it’s about “what’s most important in each of their lives”.

And, as far as the series is concerned, none of these decisions are the “wrong” ones; if there’s a “wrong” decision, it’s the one 02 (and later Kizuna) warned you about, in terms of blotting your own self out and making yourself unhappy because you did it for the sake of society’s expectations instead of for yourself. There’s even a difference between the Adventure group and 02 group in their own priorities, in that the former is more individualistic and far-reaching in terms of personal ambition, and the latter prioritizes mutual support and living simpler lives as long as it makes them happy, and as far as Adventure and 02 are concerned, that’s all fine, because those are choices that suit their own dispositions and fit things that they want to do first and foremost.

Everyone is different, everyone has different priorities, and everyone has different ways to live. Everyone has different perspectives and feelings, and once the arguments are ironed out, those should be cherished and celebrated.
