okay two things you Gotta Know if you intend to continue in Impel Down: one, Ivakov uses neo pronouns. No joke. Oda invented new pronouns for them. They aren't translated tho.

The second thing is that Bon Clay, when they were in Baroque Works, was actually treated with respect as a genderfluid person (in universe, that is). The organization had codenames that coreesponded to gender, and the name Number 2 Bon clay is actually a Mashup of both the female and male naming conventions.

Oda's relationship with the lgbtq community is...tough to read, but it is important to recognize that it's a little better in Japanese.

i really don't think that's that much better. regardless of what pronouns a character is using or how they're treated in-universe, the point of reference the audience has is the real world and oda is just blatantly using some of the most harmful and persistent caricatures of gay and trans people as stand ins for gay and trans people as a whole, at least at this point in the narrative. i understand its somewhat better later on.

but the thing is if it was like, these caricatures were consistently sympathetic i would be a little bit more understanding, but that just straight up isn't the case. whether or not we're supposed to see these characters and view objects of scorn and derision, or as somewhat sympathetic portrayals of gay and trans people is pretty much completely arbitrary. he wants to have it both ways.

i don't think there's an active hatred for gay and trans people from oda in the same way i dont think he actively hates women, but i think these are all groups of people who oda doesn't genuinely care about portraying outside of the very specific boundaries he already believes they should exist in. he seems fundamentally uninterested in going outside of his comfort zone to portray other groups of people as if they're like, human beings.

HOOO BOY OKAY nickel and balloon. it was a bumpy ride fellas. going immediately from s2 where nickel was kinda a POS to s3 where they suddenly became acquaintances was a little weird to me. (especially in that one episode where silver & candle interrogate nickel about baseball. no suitcase mention?? huh???) but it was cool to see their journey! the buddy-buddy thing seemed weird throughout earlier episodes because in s2 balloon and nickel kinda hated each other's guts so i'm glad that was covered in a later episode and that their friendship was actually solidified. BUT that doesn't leave nickel off the hook if he dont march his ass up to suitcase and say sorry the minute they go back to season 2 i'm gonna have a WORD with that boy

Hi there!

Its been, a longgg time since ive been on tumblr and ive started anew! However I wanted to talk about something that has became like extremely important for me these past few months.

And I know most are gonna be like 'ah damn its gonna be something political' But its not.

Its about the character of Izzy Hands from what is my favourite show Our Flag Means Death. I was going to write this somewhere more private, like my notes app. Eventually decided against that when I realised I just felt the need to talk about it to someone else.

So without further adieu, here is why the character of Izzy Hands is so damn important to me as a trans guy and a gay guy.

To start off, I want to talk about the fact that, Izzy is one of the first characters within media I have been able to relate too and understand on a level I didn't even realise possible. I hold that same loyalty this character has, that same instinct to follow along with those you know and not to question them, even if those people aren't objectively *good* so to say.

Because just like this damn angry little man, I do the same, I follow those who arent objectively good, even if it results in more pain and suffering than good. Ive followed people who have actively called me an animal before due to my sexuality and gender - Just like how Edward has called Izzy a dog in the past, albeit for different reasons. Ive known what its like to question my loyalty to those people but ultimately stay because in some way ive loved them.

Izzy Hands has genuinely been the first character I ever felt truly connected too in this form of sense. And dont even get me started on how he was in the aftermath of losing his leg.

I'm someone who has been losing both my hearing and my sight at *alarming* rates. Like to the point im having to have optician appointments every couple of months to make sure my prescription isn't changing more than it is already. Its got to the point where my glasses arent actually helping me with some aspects and im needing to slowly begin trying to adjust to using a white cane so that way i can try stay safe within public areas. Dont even get me started on my hearing loss.

Ill never forget how I felt when I saw Izzy's reaction to himself within his depressed state after losing his leg; (the whole "what even are you?" scene), having to take about 20 minutes to just sit and cry. Because I felt that so fully after having to experience my own depression to my own circumstances.

He's a character that from start to end I found being able to see myself in.

And by loving him it's like loving the part of myself I didn't think that I could love.

This character is one that i'm going to hold so damn dearly to my heart because I don't think Im ever going to be able to find one that ill be able to actively relate too on so many damn levels.

It’s hard to distill everything I love about Judaism into one post, but I’m gonna do my best to give the broad strokes.

Judaism isn’t just a religion, or just a culture. It’s both and it’s beyond. It’s a rich history, a touchstone for a people that have been dispersed and oppressed all over the world and still manage to stay resilient and connected. Jewish community varies so heavily all around the world, European Jews and African Jews and Middle Eastern Jews and Asian Jews etc, so many gorgeous unique traditions. Yet they have the same core, a thread of the same history. You feel like you’re cousins with someone on the other side of the planet who doesn’t share your native language. You connect through sharing food and joy and sorrow and holy days and ancient prayers and the ancestors who first said them. If your nuclear family is shit, then you still have a family in every other Jew around the world.

And converts are part of that family too! It’s said that all Jewish souls, including future ones, were present at Mount Sinai to receive the Torah, and that includes converts. Converts are to be treated as if they were always Jewish as soon as they convert, and you can feel a familiarity in them as soon as they begin their study. It’s very hard to convert, there is so much to learn and it can take years, and converts are revered for that dedication.

Judaism is a culture focused on education, critical thinking, charity, respect, peace, community, kinship. Even in the most stringent orthodox communities, communities with strict gender roles, I know I’ll be safe as a queer trans person even if they don’t fully understand my identity. They may possibly disagree with me (but they may not! there are many queer & ally Orthodox Jews!) but they’ll definitely keep me safe, which is something I can’t honestly say about wider leftist spaces.

It’s a genuine miracle that Judaism has lasted thousands of years after countless genocides and forced fleeing. So many cultures with similar stories to ours have been completely wiped out. But through a mix of tradition and adaptability in equal parts, a dedication to observe our tradition no matter the circumstances, this culture has prevailed and always will. Everyone who tried to kill us for good has failed and always will. There’s something so invigorating and empowering about that, as horrible as all the tragedy has been and continues to be.

Speed round of some Judaism fun facts!

- The Hebrew calendar is based on the lunar cycle, instead of solar like secular time. Currently it’s the year 5784, and the 6th day of Nisan. (Or maybe 7th by now?? Our days also begin at sundown!)

- Our most significant holidays, the High Holy Days, happen in the September-October range

- Virtually any commandment is permitted to be broken if following it could endanger someone’s health. Preservation of human life is beyond all other law. This is known as pikuach nefesh, “to save a soul.”

- The phrase “chosen people” gets misunderstood by gentiles a lot. We like to say we were “chosen to do the dishes.” We get the hard work of following a bunch of commandments gentiles don’t have to, in order to be so dedicated to doing good that we inspire the whole world to do good in their own way. It’s important to note that there is no concept of eternal damnation in Judaism, and there is no consequence for not being Jewish! We don’t proselytize, we don’t see our religion as “the correct one.”

Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik (co-founder of ao3!) is a Jewish fantasy novel, mixing multiple classic fairytales with dangerous fae creatures in a Slavic inspired setting. It’s gritty and dark yet so full of warmth and love, with some of the best female characters I’ve encountered in any media. It has so many little bits of Jewish culture sprinkled throughout that makes me giddy to see. And it also has THE best representation of the shape of antisemitism, how it operates and feels to experience. I cannot sing its praises enough.

Karov by Batya Levine is an album we’ve been listening to a lot this past week. Batya is a queer Ashkenazi musician inspired by historic Jewish music, and their stuff is absolutely beautiful. I’m a big fan of these lyrics from them: “we are good, we are flawed, we are the breath of an imperfect G-d.”

Like them better as part of a dynamic. I love his dynamic with Team Bardock (Fasha/Celipa, Pumbukin/Shugesh, Tora/Toma, and Toteppo/Borgos). I may not like his changes in Super, but I do love his relationship with Gine.

hello! this is for the thoughts on homestuck! i think it's interesting how you can read the beta kids as the different troubles a kid could face growing up and, frankly in my opinion, john is no exception. i feel like his upbringing is emblematic of like... you can grow up in a good community in a happy household with a loving father and still not come out of it okay because it's not that simple. he reads SO clearly to me as that experience kids have with mental illness- you don't know what's going on other than there's something wrong with you, because nobody saw any reason to tell you anything else was a possibility. not to mention when you consider it in the transgender context. it's all the little unfortunate side effects of the classic suburban lifestyle that pile up on top of each other- by all means you should be happy, but here you are, just as discontent as all the rest of your friends. ...looks at the big textblock and starts sweating. john makes me feel a lot of emotions if you couldn't tell. i just think he's neat.

yes!! i hardly ever see true analysis of june, especially in early acts, which is wild because she is literally the Main Character. and there is really so much to explore with her, especially when it comes to her emotional struggles and connections with people.

SORRY I WENT OFF A BIT...

june has got to be one of the most heavily autistic coded characters in homestuck, which is saying something bc almost all of them can be read as some form of neurodivergent/mentally ill (or both). but june, specifically, is interesting because, as you said, she had the most "normal" upbringing of all of the kids, both alpha and beta, and by far has the hardest time making connections with people. she has a tendency to derail conversations towards her interests ('shitty' movies) and it often feels like making connections of events to her movies helps her process and relate to those events. she often takes people at their face value, and struggles to pick up on sarcasm or tone through text, and is very gullible because of it (terezi tricking alt june to fight her denizen early, then not taking dave or davesprite seriously until the last minute – she either believes everything someine tells her or nothing, depending on her pre-established notions of the person).

all of these make genuine relationships and connections difficult to build with june. the theme of loneliness with her is Extremely prevalent throughout the comic, even in the snapchat epilogues. she is like the manifestation of undiagnosed autism in children (especially young boys who are trans and dont know it yet). she has a caring dad and a 'good life' but her struggle to make irl connections and that feeling of knowing Something is different about you (or something is "wrong" with you) but not understanding what it is... i feel a lot of that is why june resonates with people.

this is not even going into detail about june's trans coding (be it intentional or not on hussie's end, a good portion of the kids have very real trans coding that i wish more people would appreciate cough cough jake, jane, eridan, the zahhaks.... cough cough cough) or her role in the narrative as both a breath player and a main character... it all paints and extremely compelling picture of this character and i really wish more people would appreciate her!!

one aspect about them i love I LOVE uhm everything about her. i like that shes like neutral to kids in both part 2 & fujikos lie like she doesnt like kids but shes not EVIL to them. i like that they made her not maternal but without making it like Evil and Bad shes just a woman .... oh actually i adore that in 1$ money wars they make her a stock gambler as in she buys & sells stocks but is fucking AWFUL at it and loses ALL HER MONEY in it like twice or 3 times in the movie. it just keeps happening. yes shes a businesswoman but whats MORE businesslike that losing all ur money in stocks LMFAO. perfectly in character

one aspect i wish more people understood about them i wishhh people understood everything about her more like 1. that she is equally part of the gang as goemon and that 2. she is a thief out of BOREDOM like lupin is. yes fujiko ALSO cares about treasures & money but that is to fill the void in her life... like #materialgirl. hows that so hard to understand that shes deeply unhappy and seeks fun (through heists and through hoarding Fun Expensive Stuff and through fake marriage schemes and through her flings with lupin and so on) COME ON!!! shes not money-hungry as in she wants to hoard and be a billionaire she just likes seeking it out cuz its fun AND SHES A GAMBLER re: the stocks thing but also re: her poker card motif re: the cicciolina episode and so on and so forth. shes at her heart a gambling addict, too. thrillseeker!!!!

one (or more) headcanon(s) i have about this character uhm headcanons wise i simply cannot see her as anything but a rich kid who was cut off from the family fortune for whatever reason like fujiko to me has a very instinctual understanding of moneys worth and moneys power. as if shed grown up seeing her father wield it as a weapon. but for whatever reason (because an older brother herited the family fortune or ties were cut with her personally, or whatever else) she lost access to that money and had to get it on her own and OF COURSE shed get it through crime cause 1. better money to be made 2. faster this way + shed know about fraud from her dad doing it 3. ITS MORE FUN.. also fujiko mine is a fake name/new identity she named herself that. whether shes cis or trans she named herself that. and fujiko coming from money but not getting to use it pairs nicely with lupin being an heir like he too grew up with money but he always had access to it (and was taught how to steal anything he might want too) so money is worthless to him. its just funny paper he steals sometime. fujiko was cut off from it so shell take anything she can get

one character i love seeing them interact with FUJIKO AND JIGEN FRIENDSHIP IS EVERYTHING TO MEEEE they are best friends who hate each other. this is kinda hellish to me specifically to navigate in fandom cuz on one hand u get people who dont understand anything and think jigen & fujiko genuinely wish the other was dead (... presumably in some ultra-monogamous way to hog lupin ig? lmfao) and on the other hand u get people who ship them and think they have sex n its like ok i think theres some threesomes in there but uhm. just the two of em no that is untrue that never happened. sorry. i also love any fujiko & goemon interactions and uhm basically fujiko interacting with anyone ever cuz shes my everything but i think jigen fujiko friendship is my most special thing to see cuz its kinda rare...

uh. honestly hard to say cause i dont honestly think the characters i like are rlly 'unpopular'. like some get a lot of hate directed at that (sasuke and sakura, for instance) but theyre still popular characters.

i think what i'll say is i wish more ppl liked sakura without disregarding her flaws. i think her flaws make her more interesting. i think her being kinda selfish makes her more interesting. i think her being callous and insensitive sometimes makes her more interesting. i think when her attempts at kindness hurts others, its more interesting. i think sakura is a good person, but a flawed person. i think she does and says bad things, not infrequently, but is still a likeable character and an interesting one

it's been said before, but Gaara. @shukakumoodboard said just last night when they got this or similar one from this ask game, but i cannot stand the blushing sex-clueless Gaara--the man is the leader of an entire village, please stop--and i can't stand ppl baby-girl-ifying him--the man has a fuckin body count at least a mile long.

genuinely it grates so much. and on one end you get this weird homophobic infantilization and on the other hand you get this ableist misinterpretation of him as being a violent "psychopath". like ppl rlly dont understand this character--barring a few ppl i trust--and i think thats a travesty

will never get it, will never be into it, never wanna be into it. Kankuro and Kiba are so straight and Kiba gives strong 'homophobic dudebro vibes'. its gotten so popular too, to the point it like actively grates--i guess that's something i could have answered the last ask with re: what thing i hate because of the fandom.

generally speaking i also just will never see the merit in a 'everyone is gay and trans' "utopia" not just cause it's not realistic, but because i wanna live in a world where straight and cis ppl love lgbt ppl for who we are. i wanna live in a world where homophobia and transphobia dont exist because straight and cis ppl do the work to combat it both externally and internally

No one I know has seen this movie and It wasn’t as good as I wanted it to be and I’m upset

Has anyone seen that movie Fanfic on netflix? Its a polish movie so it has english dub which is how I watched it. So take this into consideration with my opinion on it. Maybe its exceptional in polish idk.

The writing is so bad but it had so much going for it :(

As the title suggests, there’s a reference to fanfiction, what it can do for its readers and the people who write it. But that’s all. A Reference. Its not really something that we focus on throughout the movie and I actually forgot that this is what the movie was supposed to be about halfway through until they throw it back in there at the end for some reason. 

We’re following our main character, an alternative looking teenager with a cool edgy shag cut that hates their life and their parent and uses their fanfiction writing as a form of escapism. They see themselves as a rockstar, dating the character of their dreams, living a life they could never live. I get it I get it seems cool.

But its weird because, the life that our main character is escaping tbh doesnt seem that bad. I mean sure they are unhappy, don’t get along with their father, but also they basically go to euphoria high school so they get to go to all these cool warehouse raves with their huge group of friends all the time? Thats not so bad. Its truly silly like, our character will be out with their large group of friends to this bonfire that they didnt have to go to if they didnt want to but for some reason they brought their laptop with them to write fanfiction. ( how their laptop battery can survive all this I dont know im jealous)

And they see a therapist who seems to be genuinely interested in helping them deal with their emotions in a way that isnt just yelling at people, but alas the world is against them all the time of course. I think what really makes this character not work for me is that there is no internal dialogue? There is initially, like in the first couple minutes of the movie but then they just decided actually nvm? and from then on I just have to guess the main characters thought process and feelings from some longing stares. 

I kept watching despite how much I didn’t like this main character only because the show is nice to watch tbh its pretty. And then I got even more sad because our character finds out that theyre trans. 

Now i just want to like this movie even more right???? But how they find out theyre trans is truly silly. I’m nonbinary and do consider myself trans, sure I dont know everyones experience... but also has anyone ever just decided to put on a pair of jeans, a t shirt, and a jacket and then decided they got the wrong gender? Because our main character does. Its not like he was in drag or something thats just a comfortable outfit for any gender? Have they never been allowed to wear pants before???? I just dont understand. 

The rest of the movie is not that exciting just kind of finding themselves with a love interest who shows up every now and again and isnt too exciting. This movie feels like something that was made to be a show but some higher up said nah so they smashed in to an hour and a half. Why are the characters so flat. Why is our main character the worst in a way thats not intentional? Why cant they wear pants until they find out theyre a boy? 

Am I a girl when I wear mini skirt and a boy when I wear pants?

Also who is our main characters hair stylist I liked his hair before he cut if off I want that please and thank you.

its really disconcerting that the default response to someone saying that a protagonist or character in some well-established IP should either be transgender or played by a transgender actor seems to be “oh yeah haha that will really piss off ______” or something along those lines. id like to think that making trans people feel safe and seen should be the priority over Owning The Conservatives. and sometimes i just dont like to be reminded that my sheer existence fills people with rage. especially when it feels like even in a conversation focusing on the inclusion of trans people, the focus is shifted to the people that hate us and how our visibility will affect them rather than us, the underrepresented, endangered demographic in question. and this comes from genuinely well-meaning allies!!!

not every conversation surrounding trans people has to operate within the context of transphobia. we should be allowed to exist in the public eye independent of the hate that people have for us

its something that lots of cisgender people— especially non-queer cisgender people—just dont much understand i think— that saying “we should include you because it will make X group mad” isnt the based take that they think it is

SORRY i keep talking about vinny in these asks hes like the character with the most development or whatever. anyways he doesn’t really feel all that comfortable with feeling/showing empathy + receiving it too (throughout most of his early life nobody wasn’t all too nice to him and he was taught that being nice was a sign of weakness). when being shown kindness he Doesn’t Really Know how to respond yknow

🎭 MASKS - do they act differently around certain people? what's different between the way they act around friends, family, strangers, etc.?

lance has a different attitudes when it comes to his Weird “job” (vigilante crap) and his actual job (a librarian) so for sure he acts somewhat differently around certain others. when he’s doin his demon killin thing he comes off as VERY intense and unintentionally cold (he just wants to be left alone!!). when he’s doin his normal job he’s a lot more soft spoken and shows more kindness to others (not like he wasn’t nice before yknow)

he doesn’t have much friends though (sad!) so i dont think he acts differently around others depending on relationship. he does have a big connection with boss though and is very understanding towards him

(ok back to vinny) ive had vinny for a while so he’s definitely changed a lot!!! super duper early vinny (before crit dmg was created) he was just this Edgy Guy that was obsessed with knives and killing people and ohhh my god i genuinely hate pre-crit dmg vinny soooo much. his design was also pretty different too (shorter hair, wore a trenchcoat along w his scarf, bigass scar on his face, TERRIBLE color palette) (the scarf was pretty much the only thing consistent throughout his design)

other big (design) changes to characters include:

uriel originally had armor

boss used to be much much taller than the rest of the cast

harmony used to be a boy (trans? who knows……………………………)

mae used to have untextured straight hair that was light blue (worst mae design btw)

is southpark genuinely problematic*? can you watch and criticize it at the same time?

I do think southpark has a problem with trans and lesbian rep, whilst i am very happy for what they've done with Tweek (literally one of the best reps i've ever seen), also the bi rep is quite nice , they still lack in the trans and lesbian rep. , and like they got better with gay rep i hope they do the same with trans and lesbian rep ( i acknowledge SP makes fun of everyone, but it usually ends with a punchline along the lines of the bigoted party being in the wrong very obviously, but then there's video like "go, strong women, go!" where it depicts just plain transphobia with no punchline in it, and in the comments its filled with brim with transphobes and transmeds, also the overly feminine gay characters and overly masculine lesbian characters...)

I won't be speaking on the "racism and antisemetism", because i'm not of neither groups, but i saw some comments and analysis about how some episodes actually HELPED with getting rid off antisemetism and racism! (i can link the analysis etc. if someone asks me for it!) , most of episodes actually make fun of antisemites and racist, but for some reason a lot of racist teenagers (sometimes adults too...) think that this show is actually supporting them?

can we really get away from any type of problematic media?? i mean even fck!ng sanrio and MLP had racism in it, some ppl who hate on southpark watch DSMP or worse sh!t😭

i feel really bad for liking southpark, i certainly do not like that it was written by two cishet white dudes, but i also think a lot of people didnt properly watch any episodes and don't understand what the show is actually trying to say. i feel bad for watching it and liking it, and i dont know what to do about it. i got very hyperfixated and there's two groups of people, either one hating on it saying Its extremly problematic or the other one saying that Its the purpose of the show..
